Tonight: A peep inside our pay packets. | :00:00. | :00:08.
Provisional figures show pax rises in the East Midlands are avdraging | :00:09. | :00:23.
out at less than 1%. Plus, ` man who killed a teenager outside is | :00:24. | :00:27.
Derbyshire nightclub tells the jury it was self defence. Also, police | :00:28. | :00:33.
dive teams continue underwater searches for a Nottinghamshhre woman | :00:34. | :00:37.
who has now been missing for over a week. And how Nottingham's honouring | :00:38. | :00:43.
the football mad Butcher's Serna who founded AC Milan. -- Butcher's son. | :00:44. | :00:53.
Good evening and welcome to Thursday's programme | :00:54. | :00:59.
with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies. | :01:00. | :01:01.
First tonight, what's happening to our pay? | :01:02. | :01:03.
It's lagging behind, is the answer. | :01:04. | :01:04.
Every year, the Office for National Statistics isstes a big | :01:05. | :01:07.
report into how much we're darning, where the highest wages are, | :01:08. | :01:09.
I'll be speaking to Chris Hobbs representing the employer | :01:10. | :01:19.
in a moment, but first, Dom's been going through thd ones | :01:20. | :01:21.
These are the provisional figures for 2016. | :01:22. | :01:26.
The headline figure the ONS uses is the weekly gross median | :01:27. | :01:28.
This time round, the East Mhdlands saw the second lowest | :01:29. | :01:36.
increase in earnings in the first half of 2016. | :01:37. | :01:38.
The median weekly pay in the East Midlands is ?483. | :01:39. | :01:49.
The group at the top of the earnings tree, | :01:50. | :01:55.
corporate managers and directors are on ?765 a week. | :01:56. | :02:00.
At the other end, people working in retail sales, | :02:01. | :02:06.
they're on an average of ?332 a week, or around ?16,800. | :02:07. | :02:09.
And carers on almost the same, at ?17,000. | :02:10. | :02:20.
That's not good news for pax in this region - what's going on? | :02:21. | :02:28.
I think it's important to dhg behind the figure. In the East Midlands, we | :02:29. | :02:36.
have a diverse community and that means there are some areas `nd | :02:37. | :02:39.
sectors and job role is doing particularly well and others where | :02:40. | :02:44.
we have been struggling. He has been constrained in the public sdctor. | :02:45. | :02:49.
And broadly, we've been cre`ting jobs quite fast. If you are out of | :02:50. | :02:53.
work this time last year, there s a chance you will be in where now | :02:54. | :02:55.
But we DO have a lot of low-paid people. | :02:56. | :02:57.
Others stats from this survey show 1.6% of jobs | :02:58. | :02:59.
in the East Midlands were p`id below the minimum wage. | :03:00. | :03:02.
From the introduction of the National Living Wage, wd've seen | :03:03. | :03:11.
employers trying to recoup this additional cost. | :03:12. | :03:12.
They've done that by trying to reduced shift premiums, | :03:13. | :03:14.
overtime rates and taking away paid breaks. | :03:15. | :03:16.
This has meant that people's take-home pay has stayed thd same | :03:17. | :03:19.
and those below 25 have seen a reduction in their pay. | :03:20. | :03:33.
The employer 's claw by wagds through other means? I don't think | :03:34. | :03:44.
so. As any responsible employer would, they are looking across the | :03:45. | :03:48.
whole spectrum, particularlx when we think about the uncertainty coming | :03:49. | :03:49.
up. Well, let's hear what peopld | :03:50. | :03:49.
are saying about the What is going into | :03:50. | :03:51.
the account is less than what is going out, | :03:52. | :03:54.
so the Government should really increase it | :03:55. | :03:56.
and I think families are struggling. I think there's been underinvestment | :03:57. | :04:00.
in the East Midlands. I probably see that | :04:01. | :04:02.
on a daily basis. I don't think there's as much | :04:03. | :04:05.
investment here as there is in other | :04:06. | :04:07.
parts of the country. I read in the paper today | :04:08. | :04:10.
that they reckon even nurses are If you work it out, | :04:11. | :04:13.
it's not a fat lot Bills are increasing and it's tough | :04:14. | :04:21.
times for everybody. And I think with Brexit, | :04:22. | :04:25.
it will Now, economic growth | :04:26. | :04:26.
affects pay, obviously. Today, we heard that the EU | :04:27. | :04:33.
referendum doesn't appear to have How is this region fixed | :04:34. | :04:36.
to face the Brexit process? Well, we surveyed members about this | :04:37. | :04:52.
and by and large, after the referendum, they did well and we saw | :04:53. | :04:55.
that any figures today. There uncertainty ahead, but no one will | :04:56. | :05:03.
know. I think the diversity in terms of our business community stands in | :05:04. | :05:09.
good stead and the appetite well, businesses are confident and they | :05:10. | :05:12.
see opportunities and I will be an opportunity going forward. | :05:13. | :05:12.
Well, Dom's found a few mord nuggets in the survey. | :05:13. | :05:15.
Geography's interesting - lots of variation. | :05:16. | :05:19.
Derby South comes in top thhs time with average earnings | :05:20. | :05:21.
followed by North West Leicestershire at ?447. | :05:22. | :05:26.
Public sector workers are doing better | :05:27. | :05:32.
than the private sector with the public sector on ?444 | :05:33. | :05:35.
and women working full time persists in our region. | :05:36. | :05:41.
Male weekly pay is, on average, ?529.30 a week. | :05:42. | :05:43.
We'll come onto that in a moment. He mentioned the geographical | :05:44. | :06:05.
variation. Do we have too m`ny low-paid areas in the East Lidlands? | :06:06. | :06:09.
You will always be an interdsting region, because we are so dhverse. | :06:10. | :06:18.
There is a Rolls-Royce and Toyota and we've got old coal mining sites | :06:19. | :06:23.
that have their own challenges. It is also one of the beauties of the | :06:24. | :06:29.
East Midlands. The difference between men and women, 25%? This is | :06:30. | :06:36.
a problem for society. It is about ensuring young girls at school being | :06:37. | :06:39.
told they can think beyond some of the perhaps traditional rolds that | :06:40. | :06:44.
were put towards them, get those engineering roles, get thosd roles | :06:45. | :06:49.
that give you a chance for higher pay, it's something as a cotntry we | :06:50. | :06:56.
need to tackle. Can we manage that? Now more than ever, we must make | :06:57. | :07:00.
sure it is a top priority. Thank you. | :07:01. | :07:04.
A man who stabbed a teenager to death outside a Derbyshire | :07:05. | :07:07.
nightclub, has told a jury he was trying to protect hilself. | :07:08. | :07:10.
Dominic Halliday-Fox has denied murdering 17-year-old | :07:11. | :07:13.
Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball, is at | :07:14. | :07:18.
So how did he explain what happened? | :07:19. | :07:28.
The 21-year-old accepted that he killed Dante, | :07:29. | :07:31.
The police found a five-inch blade, which he admitted carrying | :07:32. | :07:37.
But he said that was for self-defence, because he's been | :07:38. | :07:46.
And he told jury about what happened here, | :07:47. | :07:52.
He said his girlfriend was drunk and she got into an argument | :07:53. | :07:57.
He said he thought Dante had a knife. | :07:58. | :08:06.
So he pulled his own knife out, to make him back off. | :08:07. | :08:11.
He told the jury he didn't know Dante was dead | :08:12. | :08:13.
And he told the jury, "I didn't mean to stab him. | :08:14. | :08:18.
So do the prosecution accept that's what happened? | :08:19. | :08:24.
Their barrister, Peter Joycd QC asked him detailed questions | :08:25. | :08:30.
He said that showed the stabbing wasn't an accident, that | :08:31. | :08:37.
Dominic Halliday-Fox was the aggressor and | :08:38. | :08:38.
that he ran towards Dante, and then stabbed him twice. | :08:39. | :08:41.
"You stabbed him on purpose", Mr Joyce said, when Dante | :08:42. | :08:43.
He went on: "Did you lose f`ce in front of your friends, | :08:44. | :08:47.
The 21-year-old kept insisthng that it wasn't intentional. | :08:48. | :08:52.
And summing up will begin here tomorrow. | :08:53. | :09:11.
The police search for a missing Nottinghamshire woman has | :09:12. | :09:13.
Officers have now issued a fresh appeal for information | :09:14. | :09:17.
about 22-year-old Melanie Whlson from Sutton-in-Ashfield, who hasn't | :09:18. | :09:21.
Meanwhile, specialist dive teams have been | :09:22. | :09:30.
A catch-up with a friend late last Wednesday is the last time | :09:31. | :09:37.
Officers have today renewed their appeal for information | :09:38. | :09:41.
She works as a charity volunteer and is described | :09:42. | :09:47.
as of slim build with long, blonde hair and a distinctive | :09:48. | :09:50.
Nobody's heard anything and that is the really concdrning | :09:51. | :09:56.
thing, because she uses social media and has | :09:57. | :09:58.
family's point of view, they are really concerned | :09:59. | :10:01.
and they just want anyone to come forward and tell us | :10:02. | :10:04.
A community search has now been launched by people | :10:05. | :10:09.
We will be searching certain local areas and if | :10:10. | :10:15.
anyone can help us in Mansfheld that would be great as well. | :10:16. | :10:18.
She's a kind and generous girl, so let us | :10:19. | :10:20.
hope we can get her found soon, safe. | :10:21. | :10:23.
Everybody's really concerned, especially her family. | :10:24. | :10:24.
It's hard to imagine how worried they must | :10:25. | :10:27.
be, having not heard from | :10:28. | :10:28.
Please, pop into your local police station or | :10:29. | :10:34.
hospital, somewhere where wd can make sure you're OK. | :10:35. | :10:36.
You're not in any kind of trouble, we just need to | :10:37. | :10:39.
Police dive teams began searching underwater at the local ple`sure | :10:40. | :10:44.
They are continuing today and have also taken | :10:45. | :10:47.
As the search for Melanie enters its eighth day, | :10:48. | :10:51.
police say they want to hear from anyone who has any | :10:52. | :10:53.
Officers say they just want to know that she's OK. | :10:54. | :11:06.
A man's pleaded guilty to mtrdering a 31-year-old in Leicester. | :11:07. | :11:08.
Adam Bent was stabbed in thd chest at Braunstone Gate in July. | :11:09. | :11:11.
Cameron Fields, who's 21 and from Gresley Close, | :11:12. | :11:13.
A 16-year-old has also pleaded guilty to assisting an offender | :11:14. | :11:20.
Both are due to be sentenced next month. | :11:21. | :11:22.
Adam's mum, Mary Pankhurst, says she feels relieved, | :11:23. | :11:26.
but that her family "have to live through the pain of losing @dam | :11:27. | :11:29.
Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection | :11:30. | :11:37.
with two serious sexual ass`ults in Nottingham last weekend. | :11:38. | :11:39.
The first victim was attackdd on Derby Road in Lenton | :11:40. | :11:43.
on Sunday and a second victhm was assaulted in Wollaton. | :11:44. | :11:45.
A 17-year-old boy who was initially arrested has since been | :11:46. | :11:47.
Police say they've increased patrols in the area | :11:48. | :11:52.
Nottinghamshire fire and rescue says a blaze that's been burning | :11:53. | :12:02.
in Walesby for over a month could finally be out | :12:03. | :12:04.
Teams are still tackling pockets of flames in the wreckage | :12:05. | :12:08.
of an industrial unit on Forest Lane, which is | :12:09. | :12:10.
Investigations continue over the illegal waste | :12:11. | :12:14.
We hear about the growing popularity of a university society helping | :12:15. | :12:26.
Hundreds of school children in Leicestershire have had their flu | :12:27. | :12:40.
vaccines today as part of the school | :12:41. | :12:43.
The nasal spray is being offered to all 5-11 year olds. | :12:44. | :12:48.
Well, one mother's urging parents to make sure | :12:49. | :12:51.
Kerry Knight's son was left fighting for his life | :12:52. | :12:56.
Pupils at this primary school in Leicester lined up to have their flu | :12:57. | :13:12.
vaccine this morning. My nale is Kerry, what is your surname? | :13:13. | :13:18.
Thousands of children across Leicester, Leicestershire and | :13:19. | :13:21.
Rutland are expected to havd the spray in the next few weeks. Lester | :13:22. | :13:25.
was one of the first in the UK to roll out the nasal spray as an | :13:26. | :13:31.
alternative to the injection. It helps children avoid flu. Wd offer | :13:32. | :13:36.
it on a yearly basis, because flu strains change and it helps | :13:37. | :13:41.
developing immunity to protdct the wider community. Flu is highly | :13:42. | :13:46.
contagious and spreads rapidly. It is hoped that by immunising all | :13:47. | :13:49.
primary school children it will help not only stop the spread of the | :13:50. | :13:52.
virus through the school, btt protect other friends of thd rest of | :13:53. | :13:57.
their families. Last year, the flu vaccination was offered to the | :13:58. | :14:04.
parents of 76,000 children, but only 44,000 children were immunised. A | :14:05. | :14:09.
take up rate of 58%. This ydar, health officials are hoping more | :14:10. | :14:13.
children will have the flu spray. I had the spray, because I do want to | :14:14. | :14:17.
spread germs I get the flu lyself or give it to anyone else. It tickles | :14:18. | :14:22.
your nose a little, but feels right after a while. It is import`nt and I | :14:23. | :14:27.
don't want to make my familx all, because I love them. It is ` | :14:28. | :14:31.
horrible illness and we don't want the children being of sick, because | :14:32. | :14:35.
it affects their education. This boy was just three when he got flu. At | :14:36. | :14:40.
the time, there was no vacchne for him. His mother is now urging | :14:41. | :14:43.
parents to make sure they gdt their children immunised. He contracts are | :14:44. | :14:50.
many strains of flu and we spent three months in hospital, including | :14:51. | :14:55.
intensive care and he remains an oxygen even now and still stffer the | :14:56. | :14:58.
long-term health effects of that flu. That case may be rare, but his | :14:59. | :15:03.
mother hopes it serves as a warning that a quick spray could save your | :15:04. | :15:05.
child's life. Managers at Nottingham's Hospital | :15:06. | :15:08.
Trust say they'll make a decision about whether to terminate | :15:09. | :15:10.
a contract with cleaners Carillion The cleaning company came under fire | :15:11. | :15:14.
after a serious of problems were discovered included dirty | :15:15. | :15:18.
plates and overflowing bins. An independent report is now | :15:19. | :15:20.
being put together which thd Trust's Chief Executive says will hdlp them | :15:21. | :15:23.
make a final decision. The final design's been | :15:24. | :15:32.
chosen for a new railway These plans, by Wilkinson | :15:33. | :15:35.
Eyres, have been picked candidates following | :15:36. | :15:42.
a public consultation. The two-storey exhibition h`ll | :15:43. | :15:44.
will be built alongside It'll tell the story of how | :15:45. | :15:46.
the Great Central Railway hdlped The National Farmers' Union say | :15:47. | :15:50.
they've seen a dramatic increase in the East Midlands of casds | :15:51. | :15:56.
of a deadly plant The Black Grass weed spreads rapidly | :15:57. | :15:59.
and is becoming Richard Davis has been to one | :16:00. | :16:05.

a crop, if we don't take special measures, then | :16:11. | :16:28.
it absolutely throttles | :16:29. | :16:29.
the crop that we are trying to grow, wheat | :16:30. | :16:31.
for example, The approvals for | :16:32. | :16:32.
herbicides which we That is in itself leaning | :16:33. | :16:39.
towards less herbicides. So if we had 20 of them avahlable | :16:40. | :16:43.
ten years ago, we've Farmers are continuing | :16:44. | :16:46.
to use those because they need to control the bl`ck grass | :16:47. | :16:49.
and banning turf is leading to resistance from the black grass | :16:50. | :16:52.
because if you use the same products year in and year out, | :16:53. | :16:55.
black grass gets resistant to it Now, we reported a little | :16:56. | :16:57.
while ago on the Nightowls, who give a helping hand homd | :16:58. | :17:09.
to students who've been out drinking They've been so successful, | :17:10. | :17:12.
they're recruiting more voltnteers and their work is now spreading to | :17:13. | :17:15.
other University cities. Get them up onto their side | :17:16. | :17:18.
and getting behind them. They already have 130 student | :17:19. | :17:31.
volunteers, 80 more have turned up at the Volt | :17:32. | :17:35.
nightclub, not to party, I've learned how to get | :17:36. | :17:38.
people in the recovery position, how to deal with people | :17:39. | :17:44.
if they are being sick, how to deal with people if they've coll`psed | :17:45. | :17:50.
and the position they need to be And keeping students safe | :17:51. | :17:53.
is what Nightowls I feel like I should return | :17:54. | :17:56.
the favour, because I've had people help me when I've been | :17:57. | :18:03.
in that situation. And I know that we have been | :18:04. | :18:05.
on nights with We've all been slightly | :18:06. | :18:09.
too intoxicated and needing some help, and this | :18:10. | :18:12.
is exactly what they do, I don't know a single friend | :18:13. | :18:15.
who doesn't have a story of something going wrong on a night out | :18:16. | :18:19.
and not being able to get home So Maddy started the | :18:20. | :18:22.
patrols a year ago. In that time, they've given | :18:23. | :18:25.
essential help up to nearly 700 students, walked well over 000 | :18:26. | :18:28.
of them home at night and ghven What they do is | :18:29. | :18:31.
absolutely fantastic. Our business is heavily | :18:32. | :18:39.
reliant on the student population, but also | :18:40. | :18:41.
the work they do relieves the pressure and strain | :18:42. | :18:43.
on the emergency services. And now with the extra volunteers, | :18:44. | :18:46.
the night owls can be out in force in the | :18:47. | :18:48.
run-up to Christmas. We're going to start | :18:49. | :19:04.
with a remarkable story of ` man from the East Midlands who had | :19:05. | :19:11.
a truly profound effect on football history, | :19:12. | :19:14.
founding one of Its a story that, until a fdw years | :19:15. | :19:15.
ago, hardly anyone knew. The man's name was | :19:16. | :19:20.
Herbert Kilpin. In the late 1900s, this now ropey | :19:21. | :19:21.
building on Mansfield Road Kilpin was a butcher's son, | :19:22. | :19:32.
who went into the lace And while he was there, | :19:33. | :19:35.
he founded and led the Milan Which went onto become seven-time | :19:36. | :19:39.
European Cup winning side, @C Milan. And now at last, Kilpin's | :19:40. | :19:47.
being acknowledged in his home city with a plaque on that shop | :19:48. | :19:50.
and a new biography. I'm delighted to say that book's | :19:51. | :19:55.
author is here, Robert Nierh. Alongside the man who a few years | :19:56. | :20:00.
ago restored him to his rightful place in Milan's | :20:01. | :20:03.
folklore, Luigi La Rocca. Robert, what inspires | :20:04. | :20:06.
you about this story? I think you've already expl`ined it. | :20:07. | :20:18.
He was no ordinary chap born in Mansfield Road and ended up founding | :20:19. | :20:21.
AC Milan, all of the greatest in the world. But he wasn't good enough to | :20:22. | :20:28.
play the county of forest! Bye-macro Luigi, why did you work so hard on | :20:29. | :20:33.
this project? I were to livd for 20 years so I found this | :20:34. | :20:45.
footballer, I recognised for him that he was the father of Italian | :20:46. | :20:58.
football and this I am very happy to have found. You've done a rdmarkable | :20:59. | :20:59.
job. The figure of Herbert Kilpin in | :21:00. | :21:15.
Milan is very important. We can see here some of the stuff that goes on | :21:16. | :21:16.
around the stadium. And why does it matter | :21:17. | :21:18.
that we acknowledge him herd? Because he was the father of Italian | :21:19. | :21:27.
football and they won the World Cup four times. Still leading the way! | :21:28. | :21:31.
And this is a city of footb`ll, so we owe him a recognition for he did, | :21:32. | :21:37.
even if it was abroad. And we can see humble beginnings there. How | :21:38. | :21:41.
pleased I used to see the shgns going up and have the bus n`med | :21:42. | :21:47.
after him? Fantastic. There's a book, a pub, a black, and this is | :21:48. | :21:49.
the centenary year. There was an amateur in vertigo one, | :21:50. | :21:58.
he gave me the papers in Milan and say give it about you have finished | :21:59. | :22:02.
the book. There were lots of holes in the story, so I had to fhll the | :22:03. | :22:10.
gaps in. How have you done ht? Is it more of a biographical storx? Be | :22:11. | :22:14.
essential for boring facts `re true and the games he played, but we | :22:15. | :22:18.
don't do much about his early life, so I've tried to elaborate him | :22:19. | :22:22.
playing football in the fordst and his later life, when he was married | :22:23. | :22:26.
and retired. I have woven Italian history into the book as well. | :22:27. | :22:31.
Luigi, how excited I eat is he not recognised? -- to see nothing | :22:32. | :22:36.
recognised? Onto football and some | :22:37. | :22:50.
classic Claudio. In the week Jamie Vardy's bden | :22:51. | :23:00.
nominated for the prestigiots Ranieri has been speaking | :23:01. | :23:03.
about his pride in his strikers but he says it is the clubs Japanese | :23:04. | :23:10.
frontman who has woken When there is a ball around | :23:11. | :23:13.
the box, change is there. And for me, it's very important | :23:14. | :23:18.
and also for the team, because it is there | :23:19. | :23:20.
for all the players. At Derby, goalkeeper Scott Carson | :23:21. | :23:22.
says the atmosphere has improved dramatically following the return | :23:23. | :23:39.
of Steve McClaren. Derby have taken for points | :23:40. | :23:41.
from the three games McClardn's Today Carson told us confiddnce | :23:42. | :23:44.
was low under the previous regime and is confident they'll now start | :23:45. | :23:50.
climbing the table. You can see everybody around, it's | :23:51. | :23:58.
like a weight has been liftdd off their shoulders and I think people | :23:59. | :24:01.
are starting to play for a Whereas before, I think people | :24:02. | :24:04.
were struggling really. And I think now, it's a bit more | :24:05. | :24:07.
nailed down and everyone understands thdir job | :24:08. | :24:09.
in the team a lot more. Meanwhile, Forest boss | :24:10. | :24:19.
Philippe Montanier says that the top ten remains the immediate t`rget | :24:20. | :24:21.
for his team. They've slipped perilously close | :24:22. | :24:23.
to the relegation zone, but all at Forest say they belive | :24:24. | :24:24.
they can look up, rather th`n down. Often, we make individual mhstakes | :24:25. | :24:32.
and for that it is difficult, but I know what the team can do, | :24:33. | :24:35.
and for that, I'm optimistic. As we head into autumn tomorrow we | :24:36. | :24:54.
will be looking at relegation trouble for Derby and forest. | :24:55. | :24:58.
It has been a grey day. That is putting it mildly. And for the next | :24:59. | :25:19.
few days, as well. A spell of fairly quiet and the benign weather in the | :25:20. | :25:24.
next few days. We saw some brightness this morning. Sole | :25:25. | :25:32.
beautiful colours reflecting off the clouds earlier. And there are still | :25:33. | :25:36.
some beautiful colours out there right now. Take your picturds and | :25:37. | :25:46.
send them in. We have high pressure staying put across southern parts of | :25:47. | :25:51.
the UK. It remains until thd weekend. A weather front crdeps into | :25:52. | :25:56.
northern parts and that will be a weak affair. It will affect others, | :25:57. | :26:02.
giving us cloud and light r`in, perhaps drizzle. Otherwise, it is as | :26:03. | :26:08.
you were. Fairly cloudy tomorrow. Though we are staying mild. | :26:09. | :26:14.
Temperatures in the mid teens. Cloud breaks this evening. The cloud will | :26:15. | :26:21.
increase from the north latdr as the weather front sinks. Rain across | :26:22. | :26:33.
Derbyshire. A mild one again. 1 -12d in the cities, 8-9d in sheltered | :26:34. | :26:38.
spots by tomorrow morning. Cloud thickens tomorrow morning. Raynet | :26:39. | :26:44.
sinking southwards, but fizzling out as it does so. A dry day for most. | :26:45. | :26:52.
Cloud, grey, misty and murkx. Temperatures are 15 degrees. | :26:53. | :27:00.
Relatively mild. High-presstre into the weekend. Fairly benign. We stay | :27:01. | :27:05.
dry, mist and fog first thing, but quite cloudy and staying on the mild | :27:06. | :27:07.
side. Thank you. I was just thinking again about | :27:08. | :27:18.
Herbert Kilpin. What a fant`stic story! It just remind you that we | :27:19. | :27:22.
took football and gave it to Italy and the world! Goodbye. | :27:23. | :27:27. |
