The delays in dementia diagnosis.

:00:08.:00:15.

Trees is among those waiting too long in Nottinghamshire to be told

:00:16.:00:20.

they have dementia. I thought I was going

:00:21.:00:20.

Health bosses say they're discovering a record

:00:21.:01:14.

number of cases in the city and county, but delays are causing

:01:15.:01:16.

distress to sufferers and their carers.

:01:17.:01:18.

A review of waiting times in the New Year

:01:19.:01:20.

Our health correspondent Rob Sissons has more.

:01:21.:01:25.

The Alzheimer's Society reckons that the number of people living

:01:26.:01:28.

with dementia in the east midlands is around 60,000.

:01:29.:01:32.

Therea, from Arnold in Nottinghamshire, is one of them.

:01:33.:01:44.

Sometimes, I can't remember people's names.

:01:45.:01:48.

I used to be good for all those things.

:01:49.:02:05.

It was two days before last Christmas Theresa

:02:06.:02:07.

was diagnosed with early on-set alzheimer's disease.

:02:08.:02:09.

And I noticed there was something wrong.

:02:10.:02:15.

It wasn't a case of I thought there was something wrong, I knew

:02:16.:02:18.

And not being able to do what she used to be able

:02:19.:02:23.

Teresa said it took months to get diagnosed.

:02:24.:02:28.

I thought I was too young to be in that sort of

:02:29.:02:31.

Health watchers in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire says it's

:02:32.:02:47.

concerned too many patients are having to work longer than the Tiger

:02:48.:02:50.

time of six weeks from a GP referral to diagnosis by specialist.

:02:51.:02:55.

The point is when they seek that help

:02:56.:02:57.

Nothing will be the same thereafter and for some, it

:02:58.:03:05.

is devastating, but it is only then that they can make the plans that

:03:06.:03:09.

The NHS says a review of waiting times will get underway

:03:10.:03:12.

next month, but stresses record numbers of patients are being

:03:13.:03:15.

diagnosed with dementia and it is a big priority.

:03:16.:03:26.

Our health correspondent is here. A priority there and it is paying off.

:03:27.:03:36.

It seems to be, because in some ways the NHS is a victim of its own

:03:37.:03:40.

success. Getting more people through free diagnosis, but the bigger

:03:41.:03:44.

workload means more waiting in some cases. Gone is the old view that you

:03:45.:03:50.

don't want to know if you have dementia, because there didn't used

:03:51.:03:54.

to be treatments, but now there are. They are doing a lot of work on new

:03:55.:04:00.

treatments now. Yes, on the late news we will have news of

:04:01.:04:03.

development in the East Midlands were deserted early stage, but is

:04:04.:04:06.

there a promising. And you very much.

:04:07.:04:07.

Later in the programme, we'll be talking to the man who was crowned

:04:08.:04:11.

sport's Unsung Hero last night and we'll also be reviewing a year

:04:12.:04:13.

which has been far from dull politically and shuffled the pack

:04:14.:04:16.

A court's heard how a young Nottingham man died from a single

:04:17.:04:28.

stab wound to his chest, after his car was surrounded by

:04:29.:04:31.

Four men, originally charged with murder,

:04:32.:04:39.

have instead been jailed today for manslaughter.

:04:40.:04:42.

It's because phone footage, thought to show one defendant as the killer,

:04:43.:04:45.

has now revealed the actual murderer is still on the run.

:04:46.:04:50.

James Roberson is at Nottingham Crown Court.

:04:51.:04:52.

Yes, over the last few weeks, the court here has heard how

:04:53.:05:01.

increasing animosity grew between two groups of young men

:05:02.:05:03.

It culminated with the death of 21-year-old Aqib Mazhar.

:05:04.:05:09.

The court hear how, around 8.30pm on June first this year,

:05:10.:05:12.

his car was surrounded by three other cars on his own

:05:13.:05:14.

His windows were smashed and he received a stab wound

:05:15.:05:22.

to the lung and heart from which he collapsed and died.

:05:23.:05:24.

Four men between 18 and 24 have pleaded guilty to manslaughter,

:05:25.:05:27.

because it's now been revealed the actual murderer

:05:28.:05:29.

Now the judge has asked why the defendants were originally

:05:30.:05:36.

charged with murder, then later with manslaughter.

:05:37.:05:38.

Yes, the four original murder charges were changed.

:05:39.:05:48.

It was revealed in court today that phone footage that originally

:05:49.:05:52.

was thought to show one of the four defendents as the

:05:53.:05:55.

It showed that defendent did not wield the knife,

:05:56.:05:58.

but another man who's now on the run.

:05:59.:06:01.

One of the defending barristers said the police's error had

:06:02.:06:05.

put his client at very serious risk of a serious miscarriage

:06:06.:06:08.

And Judge Stuart Rafferty said, "There must never be another murder

:06:09.:06:11.

case in this country where those analysing CCTV don't

:06:12.:06:14.

When we've reviewed our own evidence, we find that the detail

:06:15.:06:22.

became clearer when we viewed it on Apple's software and Apple

:06:23.:06:24.

So then we were able to exactly see what had gone off.

:06:25.:06:30.

We have already made steps to make sure

:06:31.:06:32.

that officers are aware that when things are transferred to one

:06:33.:06:35.

format from another, everything must be

:06:36.:06:36.

viewed in the original format if at all possible.

:06:37.:06:45.

What has happened to the defendant 's? The judge told the four accused

:06:46.:06:53.

that the merger was wholly needless, but they all knew who the real

:06:54.:06:56.

killer was, but none of them had spoken up. The man of the left is 21

:06:57.:07:04.

and was jailed for seven years, the next aged 24 and the man next to him

:07:05.:07:10.

receive nine years and 20 months and the youngest on the right, the

:07:11.:07:16.

instigator, got ten years and six months. Nottinghamshire Police say

:07:17.:07:19.

the hunt for the real killer continues. In other news, in clans

:07:20.:07:31.

to a woman and her husband who were killed within one hour of each other

:07:32.:07:35.

have opened in Derby. Police have now confirmed the man who was hit by

:07:36.:07:45.

a lorry and his wife at was discovered earlier with serious

:07:46.:07:47.

injuries, she later died in hospital. A 22 old son suffered head

:07:48.:07:52.

injuries and remains in the Queen 's medical Centre.

:07:53.:07:55.

Newcastle University says it'll investigate the death

:07:56.:07:57.

of a 20-year-old Leicestershire student who died after

:07:58.:07:59.

Ed Farmer, from Tilton-on-the-Hill, died in the Royal Victoria

:08:00.:08:02.

Police say he arrived at the hospital in a life-threatening

:08:03.:08:05.

condition after drinking an excessive amount.

:08:06.:08:07.

The University says it's saddened by the news and once the Coroner

:08:08.:08:10.

establishes the facts, it will take any appropriate action.

:08:11.:08:21.

Now 2016 has been an eventful year for our politicians -

:08:22.:08:24.

from Brexit, to attempted coups, to massive changes in Government.

:08:25.:08:26.

And the East Midlands and its MPs have been in the thick of it.

:08:27.:08:44.

So, who's had a good year and who would rather forget it?

:08:45.:08:47.

And what does next year have in store?

:08:48.:08:48.

Our political editor, Tony Roe looks back at a memorable twelve months.

:08:49.:08:51.

2016, the year when pretty much all the political punditry was wrong.

:08:52.:08:54.

Prediction number one, there will be an EU

:08:55.:08:56.

referendum and remain will

:08:57.:08:57.

Prediction number two, Hillary Clinton will be US president.

:08:58.:09:01.

# This is the year to make your decision.#

:09:02.:09:04.

Doubts were there for those Labour campaigners on the

:09:05.:09:07.

It was a big surprise when the referendum result came.

:09:08.:09:17.

It either caused political careers to crash or

:09:18.:09:19.

being in charge of decluttering the nation's

:09:20.:09:24.

roadsides to represent the

:09:25.:09:26.

Government at Fidel Castro's funeral as a Foreign Office minister.

:09:27.:09:29.

But there was Labour mutiny in the East Midlands against Captain

:09:30.:09:31.

Gloria de Piero resigned from the Shadow Cabinet, closely

:09:32.:09:44.

followed by Lillian Greenwood, and then Vernon Coaker stood down,

:09:45.:09:46.

In the real Cabinet, a case of unhappy

:09:47.:09:50.

families, with the loss of

:09:51.:09:51.

New player Theresa May discarded Nicky Morgan

:09:52.:09:56.

Baroness Stowell of Beeston stepped down as Leader

:09:57.:09:59.

Patrick MacLoughlin moved from Transport

:10:00.:10:02.

Secretary to chairman of the Conservative Party and Anna Soubry

:10:03.:10:05.

resigned from her role as Business Minister and became a

:10:06.:10:07.

standard bearer for those campaigning for a soft Brexit.

:10:08.:10:09.

Jon Ashworth stayed in the Shadow Cabinet as

:10:10.:10:14.

Shadow Health Secretary, but he lost his place on Labour's NEC.

:10:15.:10:19.

Keith Vaz lost the prestigious chair of the

:10:20.:10:21.

home affairs committee after the tabloid scandal.

:10:22.:10:23.

Who would make them again after this year?

:10:24.:10:36.

And who would have thought a pair of leather trousers would be a huge

:10:37.:10:42.

political scandal. Anything is possible. It is, like this.

:10:43.:10:43.

The reburial of Richard III firmly put the city

:10:44.:10:45.

And now tourism experts are hoping to capitalise on Leicester's growing

:10:46.:10:49.

appeal by planning a new visitor attraction.

:10:50.:10:50.

It's based on another local success story -

:10:51.:10:52.

forensic science and Sir Alec Jeffrey's development

:10:53.:10:54.

The discovery of Richard III Pars backbones beneath the council car

:10:55.:11:11.

park has been it is a magnet for Leicester. 200,000 people have been

:11:12.:11:15.

to the visitor centre since it opened two and a half years ago.

:11:16.:11:20.

What have captured people's interests? The forensics science

:11:21.:11:24.

behind the identification of the King 's bones. The DNA of Richard

:11:25.:11:29.

III working period with living relatives as part of the story

:11:30.:11:34.

captured imaginations. Without that was an idea there to develop another

:11:35.:11:40.

visitor attraction will look at forensics and crime based on DNA

:11:41.:11:44.

fingerprinting. That higher nearing work was developed by Sir Alec

:11:45.:11:48.

Jeffreys at the University of Leicester, which is one of the other

:11:49.:11:53.

main partners in this. It is an idea without we have been thinking about

:11:54.:11:56.

for a while, we have been given funding to develop the idea further.

:11:57.:12:02.

It is in the early stages yet. This could be the development location.

:12:03.:12:06.

There is hard work ahead. Will spend the next six to 12 months looking at

:12:07.:12:14.

how we will tell the story in an engaging way and hopefully in the

:12:15.:12:17.

next 34 years we will have a new centre and news stories itself. 32

:12:18.:12:25.

and a half thousand visitors came to Leicester last year and it is

:12:26.:12:29.

anticipated that this could become another jewel in the city APPLAUSE

:12:30.:12:32.

Leicestershire County Council has bought land in Market Harborough

:12:33.:12:35.

to develop industrial units in an attempt to boost

:12:36.:12:37.

The council's bought 18 acres of commercial development land

:12:38.:12:40.

The authority will seek permission to develop

:12:41.:12:43.

industrial units and offices, which it will rent

:12:44.:12:45.

Leicester City Council is hoping to cover the city's Magazine Gateway

:12:46.:12:52.

The weeping willow creation was part of the Blood Swept Lands and Seas

:12:53.:12:57.

of Red installation that covered the Tower of London two years ago.

:12:58.:13:00.

Now Leicester has made a bid to host it in 2018.

:13:01.:13:03.

If successful the city will have it for six weeks as part of the world

:13:04.:13:06.

Next - they say the best gifts come in small packages and that's

:13:07.:13:27.

certainly true for parents Mel and Khaled Ibrahim from Nottingham.

:13:28.:13:30.

Their daughter Amaya was born 16 weeks early back

:13:31.:13:32.

in April, but she's finally been allowed home.

:13:33.:13:34.

They say it's the best Christmas present they could have wished for.

:13:35.:13:37.

Eight months after she was born, Amaya Ibrahim has finally been

:13:38.:13:42.

She arrived 16 weeks early in April, much to the surprise

:13:43.:13:46.

She looked like a little bird and she was moving and

:13:47.:13:58.

it just, it scared me, because I was on my

:13:59.:14:01.

own and I didn't know what

:14:02.:14:02.

I wanted to hold her, keep her warm, but I knew that I could to

:14:03.:14:08.

So I just stayed there waiting for help to come.

:14:09.:14:12.

And so Amaya's fight for survival began.

:14:13.:14:13.

She spent most of her life at Nottingham's

:14:14.:14:15.

Children's Hospital at the Queens medical Centre, battling everything

:14:16.:14:17.

from lung disease to sepsis and still relies on oxygen.

:14:18.:14:24.

Babies born that early have many complications with

:14:25.:14:31.

their bowels, with their lungs and they need a lot of support

:14:32.:14:34.

And it's fantastic that now she has reached a time when

:14:35.:14:38.

all of the team looking after her decided she is ready for home.

:14:39.:14:41.

Her mum and dad say she wouldn't be alive

:14:42.:14:43.

today had it not been for the

:14:44.:14:45.

treatment she received at the QMC and that is why they have raised

:14:46.:14:48.

over ?11,000 for the neonatal unit where her journey began.

:14:49.:14:50.

They spent 19 weeks battling to save her.

:14:51.:14:56.

She has had many, many downs and also many ups

:14:57.:14:58.

and there have been times when we thought

:14:59.:15:00.

then something would happen and she couldn't.

:15:01.:15:03.

Now, finally, Amaya is home just in time for Christmas.

:15:04.:15:07.

Her mum and dad say it's the perfect present.

:15:08.:15:09.

And judging by her face, Amaya's pretty pleased too.

:15:10.:15:23.

She is gorgeous and what a fighter. Wonders scroll to see doing so well.

:15:24.:15:30.

It is time for the sport now. Yes, only one place to start

:15:31.:15:34.

with that amazing night for the East Midlands at the BBC

:15:35.:15:36.

Sports Personality Later, we'll be joined

:15:37.:15:39.

by the reformed gang member who posed with the future king

:15:40.:15:44.

after winning the Unsung Hero Award. But first, another crazy

:15:45.:15:47.

weekend for Leicester City. On the pitch, their star player

:15:48.:15:49.

was sent off in a remarkable match. Off it, two more trophies for

:15:50.:15:52.

the cabinet at Sports Personality. A red card on Saturday

:15:53.:15:55.

for Jamie Vardy. Red carpet on Sunday

:15:56.:16:01.

as an award finalist. It's an amazing feeling,

:16:02.:16:04.

but obviously, there is a Everyone has had a remarkable year

:16:05.:16:06.

in the sport, so we will just have He was the face of

Leicester City at the Royal reception at the Sports Personality

:16:13.:16:16.

Awards last night, with his wife 24 hours earlier, he had

:16:17.:16:22.

the new red face of Leicester, controversially sent off

:16:23.:16:26.

early in the game with Stoke. A decision which

:16:27.:16:29.

would see him banned from playing over Christmas

:16:30.:16:30.

unless an appeal is successful. A decision which left his

:16:31.:16:33.

manager furious, but You've taken it easy

:16:34.:16:34.

obviously in the league obviously looking for

:16:35.:16:44.

a Christmas break yourself. Vardy didn't win the main award last

:16:45.:16:47.

night, but he was on stage with his colleagues

:16:48.:16:52.

for other accolades. Firstly, for the manager,

:16:53.:16:55.

coach of the year. It's fantastic to take this

:16:56.:16:58.

award here in England. It's a huge, huge honour

:16:59.:17:05.

to receive this award. A big thank you to our fans

:17:06.:17:16.

as well for their loyal Leicester's team spirit came out

:17:17.:17:19.

again at the weekend with the Vardy sent off, six

:17:20.:17:24.

players booked and two goals down to stroke,

:17:25.:17:26.

they galvanised themselves

:17:27.:17:27.

to another draw. The first, thanks to

:17:28.:17:31.

goal-line technology. The second, just two

:17:32.:17:33.

minutes from the end. The team of the year

:17:34.:17:37.

with one of the comebacks And in just a moment we'll

:17:38.:17:39.

have our incredible BBC Unsung Hero of the Year with us in the studio -

:17:40.:17:48.

the awe inspiring Marcellus Baz. Well, lets round up the rest

:17:49.:17:53.

of the days news now starting BBC Nottingham Sport broke the story

:17:54.:17:56.

this morning that local businessman Alan Hardy had agreed a deal to buy

:17:57.:18:02.

the club from Ray Trew. It comes in the nick of time with

:18:03.:18:05.

Notts believed to be on the verge Well, the man who broke the story

:18:06.:18:09.

was Colin Slater who's been covering I spoke to him just a short time ago

:18:10.:18:15.

to find out what he knows. We know that there was a deal of

:18:16.:18:20.

frenzied activity yesterday after it That upset the negotiations

:18:21.:18:23.

in motion and late in the evening, pretty late Willie,

:18:24.:18:27.

it was all settled. A deal was done, it

:18:28.:18:29.

had to be concluded. So, local business men,

:18:30.:18:31.

presumably he has those winding up order and enough to deal

:18:32.:18:38.

with at the club at the moment? There has been a court

:18:39.:18:41.

hearing today and it has been adjourned,

:18:42.:18:44.

but my understanding is that Alan Hardy

:18:45.:18:45.

will pay the amount of money. It's getting on for

:18:46.:18:48.

?300,000, the unpaid tax bill and he will

:18:49.:18:49.

settle that on the day that he takes control

:18:50.:18:52.

of That's off the field,

:18:53.:18:53.

but he's got lots to fix on the He is aware of that

:18:54.:18:57.

and if he wasn't, then the defeat with six

:18:58.:19:00.

in a row, made him even more aware of it and he

:19:01.:19:03.

is intending and determined

:19:04.:19:05.

to put things right. He talks to John Sheridan today

:19:06.:19:06.

or at least sent him a message, supporting the manager,

:19:07.:19:09.

but saying that there are going to be funds available

:19:10.:19:12.

to strengthen a squad which has now lost six

:19:13.:19:14.

in a And we've seen Notts County's goals,

:19:15.:19:16.

so lets get round the rest - featuring a young Forest player

:19:17.:19:23.

telling it how it is, a game of two halves for Mansfield

:19:24.:19:26.

and starting with an eighth game Derby went to Fulham actually hoping

:19:27.:19:29.

for an eighth win in a row and Tom seemed to have set them

:19:30.:19:43.

on their way, but coming away from it was one point is nothing

:19:44.:19:45.

to be ashamed of. Especially after

:19:46.:19:48.

Fulham took the lead. Steve McClaren rightly hailed

:19:49.:19:50.

the reaction to going behind. There was no comparable

:19:51.:19:53.

reaction from Nottingham Forest

:19:54.:19:55.

at the city ground. They saw wolves squeeze into a lead

:19:56.:19:58.

before half-time, but only showed the briefest

:19:59.:20:01.

spark in the second before succumbing to

:20:02.:20:04.

Defender Joe Worrall said what many of the fans were

:20:05.:20:07.

I think a lot of the players are very...

:20:08.:20:10.

Every chance I get to play in this team, in training, I

:20:11.:20:21.

want to head it, kick it, tackle, be the best I can

:20:22.:20:27.

be and I don't think there are many

:20:28.:20:29.

Mansfield were pretty dreadful at Exeter in the first-half and

:20:30.:20:33.

They were much better in the second, but couldn't

:20:34.:20:36.

In fact, Exeter were able to get another.

:20:37.:20:39.

Now, Leicester Tigers, who seemed to have put their Director

:20:40.:20:41.

of Rugby's job on the line with a terrible performance

:20:42.:20:44.

Well, hows this for a nerveless response.

:20:45.:20:46.

After a fine display of the old Tigers' virtues

:20:47.:20:48.

of industrial rugby, it came down to this LONG kick

:20:49.:20:51.

to save a European campaign and, possibly, the top man's job.

:20:52.:20:54.

To Welford Road's joy, Owen Williams was up to it.

:20:55.:20:56.

Now the moment we have all been waiting for -

:20:57.:21:01.

with us here in the studio, fresh from rubbing shoulders

:21:02.:21:04.

with the future King and the biggest names in sport -

:21:05.:21:06.

the remarkable BBC Unsung Hero 2016, Marcellus Baz.

:21:07.:21:08.

the East Midlands Unsung Hero for his work with the

:21:09.:21:11.

For over ten years, he's given up 30 hours a weeks coaching hundreds

:21:12.:21:16.

of kids and steering many of them away from a life of crime.

:21:17.:21:19.

Getting some into work, changing lives and giving hope

:21:20.:21:21.

to many youngsters who have previously been written off.

:21:22.:21:23.

Last night, he was crowned the BBC National Unsung Hero for 2016.

:21:24.:21:38.

So, Baz, you grew up in an area of deprivation in Nottingham

:21:39.:21:42.

and in your 20s you were stabbed and decided

:21:43.:21:44.

Yes, I can understand that people think it is a story. It is a

:21:45.:22:03.

difficult change a lot of people. I can see why people are interested in

:22:04.:22:04.

it. when millions of TV viewers saw

:22:05.:22:06.

you collect your award. I am just humbled, privileged

:22:07.:22:11.

and honoured to be here today. I would just like to

:22:12.:22:14.

dedicate this award to all those volunteers that

:22:15.:22:18.

haven't been recognised, effort in and make such

:22:19.:22:19.

a massive change to sport. Let's give them a big

:22:20.:22:22.

round of applause. Well, Baz, what a moment for you -

:22:23.:22:28.

how are you feeling tonight? It is so surreal style. It hasn't

:22:29.:22:46.

sunk in at all. I'm in a bit of a daze. I haven't had much sleep

:22:47.:22:52.

anything. Here I am. What was the old thing like, that moment when you

:22:53.:22:57.

step up? It was an absolutely amazing moment I will be with me for

:22:58.:23:02.

the rest of my life, just standing up and being around the kind of

:23:03.:23:04.

You can see all the famous faces you were rubbing shoulders with last

:23:05.:23:08.

night, but what kind of reception did you get and what was it

:23:09.:23:12.

It was an amazing experience. They are really nice, humble people.

:23:13.:23:22.

There are just like me and you. Are you sure? Yes, they are just like me

:23:23.:23:26.

and you. The fact that you're not like normal people, because of the

:23:27.:23:30.

work that you have put in. Towers about how important I was you

:23:31.:23:36.

anything is your able to achieve. It is about changing people's lives and

:23:37.:23:40.

giving them an opportunity to engage in sport, as we do predominantly

:23:41.:23:44.

boxing and giving them a way out. Giving them help and the ability to

:23:45.:23:50.

channel their energies in a constructive way. How did you do

:23:51.:23:56.

that so well? I do not know. There are involved to people that can do

:23:57.:24:01.

that, but we might be a bit more successful in the areas that we work

:24:02.:24:06.

with because we can relate to some of the kids going through the same

:24:07.:24:09.

challenges and obstacles that we have been through. I'm talking about

:24:10.:24:16.

ex-offenders, I have lived in areas of deprivation and I have lived

:24:17.:24:20.

through the hurdles and obstacles and now we can get those kids in the

:24:21.:24:24.

right direction. You're doing remarkable work. They are struggling

:24:25.:24:34.

right now to find premises for the work you want to continue next year.

:24:35.:24:39.

Any hope but that would be very welcome. A huge congratulations. He

I'm going to need at least another 15 years to recover from children.
