It's almost 6:30pm - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:00.:00:07.

Tonight - safe and well - the Leicester couple

:00:08.:00:10.

stranded by a blizzard on a Scottish mountainside.

:00:11.:00:11.

Huddled for warmth in emergency bivouack, they were eventually

:00:12.:00:14.

We'll definitely be back but we'll be probably a little

:00:15.:00:22.

become the new focus of the battle over fracking?

:00:23.:00:32.

Plus, smashed windows and slashed tyres, scores of cars

:00:33.:00:34.

vandalised across seven Leicestershire villages.

:00:35.:00:37.

Do they wake up one morning and say, do you fancy

:00:38.:00:41.

seeing how many cars we can smash up tonight?

:00:42.:00:44.

And just imagine trying to do a headcount of this lot.

:00:45.:00:50.

But they do have to count all the animals,

:00:51.:00:52.

Good evening and welcome to our first full programme of 2017 -

:00:53.:01:08.

First tonight, rescuers say a couple forced to spend a night

:01:09.:01:14.

in the Cairngorms are lucky to be alive.

:01:15.:01:19.

Bob and Cathy Elmer from Leicester were caught out when a planned hill

:01:20.:01:22.

They sheltered with their dog in survival bags in white out

:01:23.:01:28.

conditions before being found by a mountain rescue team.

:01:29.:01:31.

This was the moment members of the Cairngorm Mountain rescue team came

:01:32.:01:45.

across Bob and Cathy Elmer, 4000 feet up on a snow laden plateau. The

:01:46.:01:49.

pair had been hill walking in Scotland for around 25 years but

:01:50.:01:54.

they admit despite various periods and equipment they were unprepared

:01:55.:01:57.

for the commitments they faced when they ventured out on the first day

:01:58.:02:02.

of the year. We knew it was winter time. We probably didn't quite judge

:02:03.:02:07.

how long it was going to take. They became an issue when I got two

:02:08.:02:14.

thirds of the way down and Cathy was struggling to keep up with me. Then

:02:15.:02:19.

I knew it was going to take a lot longer than I had anticipated. With

:02:20.:02:24.

their dog in tow they found themselves in deep snow and

:02:25.:02:27.

darkness. And when the batteries in both their torches gave out. The

:02:28.:02:32.

snow was at times up to our waists. We decided we couldn't go on any

:02:33.:02:35.

further because we didn't know really where we were going. You

:02:36.:02:40.

couldn't see a hand in front of your face. So we decided to get the

:02:41.:02:44.

survival bags out and gets down for the night in them. Mountain rescuers

:02:45.:02:51.

say despite temperatures of -6 and high winds, Bob and Cathy's decision

:02:52.:02:56.

to stay put and wait for daylight robbery saved their lives. The

:02:57.:03:03.

prospect of staying out there isn't that attractive but it probably is

:03:04.:03:09.

decision that saved their lives. And the pair saying being prepared for

:03:10.:03:14.

when things might go wrong is key. You can go up on a summers day and

:03:15.:03:18.

be knee-high and snow here. We've been there, we've done it. You have

:03:19.:03:24.

to go equipped. You have do have the right kit even if the sun is

:03:25.:03:29.

shining. We are now well into the winter climbing season and while

:03:30.:03:32.

Scotland's weather can be unpredictable at the best of times

:03:33.:03:36.

that is especially the case up here and during the winter months. The

:03:37.:03:40.

message to anyone venturing into the hills is make sure you have the

:03:41.:03:45.

right equipment, make sure you have the necessary skills and always be

:03:46.:03:46.

prepared to turn back. Next tonight - Sherwood Forest

:03:47.:03:52.

could become the latest battle ground for those

:03:53.:03:56.

for and against fracking. Documents obtained by Friends

:03:57.:03:59.

of the Earth show that a chemical company wants to carry out seismic

:04:00.:04:03.

surveys to see if there's shale gas The survey area

:04:04.:04:06.

:04:14.:04:16.

Friends of the Earth Here's Quentin Rayner

:04:17.:04:18.

to tell us more. These plans have been revealed

:04:19.:04:23.

through a Freedom of Information They show that the chemical company

:04:24.:04:26.

INEOS Shale appears to have agreed terms with the Forestry Commission

:04:27.:04:38.

to carry out seismic surveys in Sherwood Forest

:04:39.:04:44.

and other licenced sites The survey would involve putting

:04:45.:04:46.

us what's involved with the seismic surveys in licensed areas

:05:10.:05:13.

in the East Midlands, What we would do is undertake

:05:14.:05:15.

the survey work, then marry the survey work with vertical-cored

:05:16.:05:21.

wells - not fracked - simply samples of the geology,

:05:22.:05:25.

looking at the depths, the content, and then we would use

:05:26.:05:28.

that information to inform our conversation with the communities,

:05:29.:05:33.

with the regulator, with the planning authorities, to take

:05:34.:05:37.

on to a horizontal well and a frack. The Country Park is a Site

surveys alone could damage the ancient woodland

:05:52.:05:54.

and its wildlife. Local anti-fracking groups fear that

:05:55.:06:02.

if fracking ultimately takes place, it could lead to the decimation

morning across Leicestershire. People reported slashed tyres

:06:49.:06:52.

and smashed windscreens Our reporter Navtej Johal is in one

:06:53.:06:55.

of those villages tonight. Good evening. I was speaking to a

:06:56.:07:12.

resident here earlier who told me this is a very quiet village and not

:07:13.:07:16.

much tends to happen here. That is one of the reasons why so many

:07:17.:07:20.

people have been so shocked by what has been described as just mindless

:07:21.:07:24.

destruction. One woman told me she stepped out of her house yesterday

:07:25.:07:27.

morning and counted ten cars damaged on this street alone. In total, more

:07:28.:07:34.

than 60 cars have had their tyres slashed or Windows smashed across

:07:35.:07:42.

:07:43.:07:47.

from any of them. We spoke to a couple of earlier who had a window

car. Me and the kids, because

:07:54.:07:56.

the kids were happy that we'd got another car

:07:57.:07:59.

similar to the old one. You know, what gets

:08:00.:08:01.

into their heads? Do they wake up one morning

:08:02.:08:05.

and say, do you fancy seeing how many cars

:08:06.:08:08.

we can smash up tonight? My front tyre has just been replaced

about a month ago, so it's And already I'm going to have

:08:11.:08:18.

to replace that, just because some people have gone

:08:19.:08:22.

and vandalised my car for no reason. The police have told us that no

:08:23.:08:36.

arrests have been made so far. However a black Vauxhall Vectra

:08:37.:08:39.

believed to be connected to the incidence was found abandoned

:08:40.:08:44.

yesterday afternoon in elms Road. Police are asking anyone with

:10:13.:10:16.

Numbers are rising because of the ageing population. To prevent them

doctors recommend people check their homes for hazards, take regular

exercise, eat well and get medical help early for problems which can

fracture can be devastating. It can lead to long-term consequences.

:10:40.:10:44.

About 65% of patients who have hip fractures can lose their

independence. In the run-up to Christmas they have been seeing a

lot of falls patients. Now, with the New Year cold snap they are

Kaiser Tylen travelled over 50,000 kilometres,

beating the record set back She cycled every day of 2016,

:13:51.:13:54.

riding across England and Europe. And that includes Christmas Day,

:13:55.:14:02.

does it not, Kaiser? Welcome.

:14:03.:14:04.

Yes, it does. I have do ask you, why did

:14:05.:14:06.

you embark upon this? I used to read the

:14:07.:14:09.

Guinness Book Of World Records with my brother

:14:10.:14:16.

when we were kids, and then I read about Billie Fleming who set

:14:17.:14:22.

the record back in 1938 and it was just something

:14:23.:14:24.

that resonated with me. And once I got it into my head

:14:25.:14:27.

that was it then - I thought You've not been a lifelong cycling

:14:28.:14:31.

enthusiast, have you? No, I only started cycling just

:14:32.:14:34.

over four years ago. I'd climbed Kilimanjaro and I felt

:14:35.:14:39.

this void, so I took up So, yeah, I've only been

:14:40.:14:44.

doing that since 2012. You are a challenge

:14:45.:14:50.

taker, aren't you? There's one thing I read,

:14:51.:14:51.

and it said you wanted to have a year in the saddle, which

:14:52.:14:54.

to me sounds like hell on earth, really, because a saddle can be a

:14:55.:14:57.

very uncomfortable thing to spend Well, I rode my normal saddle

:14:58.:15:00.

that I'd rode for pretty much all of my training,

:15:01.:15:07.

and it was fine, but when I started riding every single day,

:15:08.:15:10.

yeah, it took its toll. And then in September I changed my

:15:11.:15:14.

saddle to a very fancy strange-looking contraption

:15:15.:15:20.

and it was like a new lease of life. Actually, it's a saddle

:15:21.:15:24.

that takes the pressure off your sit bones, so it

:15:25.:15:30.

distributes the pressure elsewhere. We'll have to share

:15:31.:15:34.

information at the end of What did you hope to achieve -

:15:35.:15:39.

what have you achieved now I wanted to inspire other people

:15:40.:15:43.

to get active, really, because I've gained so much from

:15:44.:15:48.

doing challenges and it's not just about the exercise but it's

:15:49.:15:51.

about the challenge itself, achieving a goal that you think

:15:52.:15:55.

is out of your reach. And I wanted to inspire others

:15:56.:15:59.

to do the same thing. So I started this thing

:16:00.:16:04.

called a sweat pledge, whereby people pledged sweat to me

:16:05.:16:09.

rather than donate money to charity So they would do

:16:10.:16:12.

exercise themselves? Yes, I would say, I'm doing

:16:13.:16:14.

this for the challenge and for the goal, so why don't

:16:15.:16:17.

you set yourself something that you Well, may many people

:16:18.:16:20.

take up your challenge. I think you're absolutely incredible

to have done that, and And there's more video of Kaiser's

for a new boss coming up Tonight the former England,

:17:00.:17:07.

Manchester United and Leeds star Alan Smith is taking temporary

a player/coach will take the team for the game with

Morecambe on Saturday. Notts County conceded some

:17:16.:17:18.

shocking goals yesterday. Then John Sheridan was sacked

by new owner Alan Hardy. The Magpies were beaten

:17:22.:17:27.

4-0 at Cambridge. It comes after nine

:17:28.:17:29.

league defeats in a row. This awful performance leaves Notts

with signings already lined up So was it a Christmas

:17:49.:17:51.

cracker for our sides This was a great opportunity for

:17:52.:18:08.

Leicester to start 2017 with their first win of the season. But despite

:18:09.:18:14.

not getting that elusive win on their travels this was a good point,

:18:15.:18:24.

with cardio adding midfielder for around 25 million it has been a

:18:25.:18:28.

decent Christmas. They came out of the festive period with four points

:18:29.:18:32.

out of nine in Fardy back for this week 's game. Derby county's run

:18:33.:18:42.

came to an end at Norwich after Forrest turned down her Derby's bid

:18:43.:18:48.

for lands brief. This defeat showed how important it was to strengthen

:18:49.:18:53.

their squad in January. So, four points out of nine for the festive

:18:54.:18:57.

fixtures is disappointing for Derby but they are seventh in the table

:18:58.:19:00.

and well-placed for a good end to season. Meanwhile Nottingham Forest

:19:01.:19:11.

defeat to Barnsley. All should be resolved as soon as the takeover

:19:12.:19:15.

goes through. Nothing they could do about this goal though and the

:19:16.:19:19.

bosses in the dark over that American takeover. We wait, we are

:19:20.:19:28.

waiting and I hope the situation will be clear because I think

:19:29.:19:33.

everybody needs the result. So after taking one point out of 18, Forest

:19:34.:19:40.

are 20th in the championship, just two points above the relegation

:19:41.:19:44.

zone. But the takeover is expected in days.

:19:45.:19:52.

Matt Green seized his chance to score his eleventh goal

:19:53.:19:54.

of the season as the Stags won one nil at Blackpool.

:19:55.:19:57.

Mansfield are 16th in League Two - eight points off

:19:58.:19:59.

Rugby now and yes, not exactly a Happy New Year

:20:00.:20:04.

for the Leicester Tigers, who are looking for a new director

:20:05.:20:08.

of rugby after the departure of long-time club loyal servant

:20:09.:20:11.

He's paid the price for the Tigers poor run of form so far this season

:20:12.:20:17.

after his players showed a distinct lack of new year resolution

:20:18.:20:20.

The final straw for Richard Cockerill.

:20:21.:20:32.

Within hours of witnessing Tigers's New Year's Day home defeat

:20:33.:20:35.

by Saracens from the stands, the director of rugby had been sacked.

:20:36.:20:39.

A brief statement brought to an end more than two decades playing and

:20:40.:20:42.

coaching the most successful team in British rugby.

:20:43.:20:48.

And it was probably that record of success - Tigers won

:20:49.:20:51.

three premierships under Cockerill - that meant that this season's five

:20:52.:20:54.

losses in 12 games just wasn't ever going to be good enough for the

:20:55.:20:57.

Though the decision hasn't brought universal acclaim.

:20:58.:21:02.

Halfway through the season is not ideal.

:21:03.:21:05.

Also there's a couple of European cup games in the group coming up

:21:06.:21:09.

that are pretty important, and mathematically I know it's very

:21:10.:21:11.

difficult to see it happening but Leicester

:21:12.:21:14.

From current players, publicly at least, regret.

:21:15.:21:20.

Skipper Ben Youngs tweeting that Cockerill's commitment and passion

:21:21.:21:23.

While Marcos Ayerza told his followers it was a very sad day.

:21:24.:21:29.

This, despite reports of a players's revolt.

:21:30.:21:32.

It comes to a point as a player where you are sort of

:21:33.:21:36.

weighing up do we just turn up and do our job and let

:21:37.:21:42.

things go or do we say, hold on, I want to take a

:21:43.:21:45.

bit of ownership of this and not necessarily put the ship right but

:21:46.:21:48.

certainly do something about it, can't just keep drifting along.

:21:49.:21:51.

And, again, if you believe the reports

:21:52.:21:52.

coming out at the moment, that seems to be what's happened.

:21:53.:21:55.

Pointedly Cockerill's own statement wished

:21:56.:21:56.

Youngs and the team well in the future but made no

:21:57.:21:59.

The two are widely thought to have had a

:22:00.:22:02.

Now, of course, though, thoughts turn to

:22:03.:22:10.

Not surprisingly, Stuart Lancaster's name has already

:22:11.:22:12.

been mentioned, but the club say they'll be no further statement on

:22:13.:22:15.

And in ice hockey - a near perfect Christmas period

:22:16.:22:24.

for the Nottingham Panthers as they took 13 points out for 14

:22:25.:22:28.

Yesterday they beat Edinburgh Capitals by four goals

:22:29.:22:33.

It looks to be an exciting 2017 for the UK's best ice hockey team.

:22:34.:22:40.

The weekend after next, Panthers play in Italy in the Europe cup.

:22:41.:22:48.

It's virtually un-heard of for a British team to make

:22:49.:22:51.

the finals but our Nottingham boys will be there.

:22:52.:22:54.

Now, it isn't the easiest of head counts, but today Twycross Zoo can

:22:55.:22:59.

finally reveal its grand total of animals.

:23:00.:23:02.

The zoo's stock take has been boosted by

:23:03.:23:08.

a bumper birth of babies - 41 of them since last year's census.

:23:09.:23:11.

The information's used by zoos around the world

:23:12.:23:13.

to look at the potential for breeding endangered species.

:23:14.:23:16.

Jo Healey reports from the new gibbon forest.

:23:17.:23:18.

I know, you just want to see the baby animals.

:23:19.:23:21.

How do you manage it with these guys, who are

:23:22.:23:29.

It can be quite challenging but you just have to wait for them

:23:30.:23:34.

to sit still for a bit and quickly count as

:23:35.:23:36.

That isn't always easy and zookeepers have two keep a

:23:37.:23:41.

That isn't always easy and zookeepers have to keep a

:23:42.:23:43.

Some of the highlights include an more

:23:44.:23:46.

Leopard 's which is one of the most endangered

:23:47.:23:48.

big cat species in the

:23:49.:23:50.

We've had a baby gorilla, a baby bonobo and we're the only zoo

:23:51.:23:57.

in the UK to hold that, so it's a very special baby for us.

:23:58.:24:00.

How many animals do you think there are, here at Twycross zoo?

:24:01.:24:03.

So, not including all the insects, how many animals do you think I hear

:24:04.:24:14.

I've finished counting these final three now and I

:24:15.:24:21.

And we actually have 545 individuals, here at Ty Cross zoo.

:24:22.:24:34.

That's all fed into a global database, recording populations and

:24:35.:24:38.

breeding potential at zoos around the world.

:24:39.:24:52.

It's making a positive impact on how zoos manage their species.

:24:53.:24:54.

Is it ultimately to save endangered species?

:24:55.:24:57.

And if they thought last year was good, very expecting even more

:24:58.:25:01.

What is that baby elephant called? A baby elephant. A car. A calf.

:25:02.:25:24.

We started off with a pretty decent sunrise and then that clouds rolled

:25:25.:25:30.

in. For some there were some spots of light rain and drizzle as well

:25:31.:25:34.

and that is how it is going to stay as we had through the evening and

:25:35.:25:38.

overnight. Quite cloudy, a little bit of light rain and drizzle in

:25:39.:25:42.

places. Because of the cloud it will not be as cold as it was last night.

:25:43.:25:46.

Temperatures probably not dropping much lower than about 4 degrees

:25:47.:25:51.

which is 39 in Fahrenheit. For most of us that will prevent frost. Just

:25:52.:25:59.

a few patches of light rain and drizzle, and a moderate breeze.

:26:00.:26:02.

Tomorrow it will be cloudy and damp to begin with but we will get

:26:03.:26:06.

clearance from the north. By the afternoon it will be gorgeous, clear

:26:07.:26:11.

blue skies and plenty of sunshine and still relatively mild, although

:26:12.:26:14.

the breezes coming through them the North. Temperatures of about six or

:26:15.:26:19.

7 degrees. Because of those clear skies to end the day tomorrow that

:26:20.:26:22.

sets us up for a very cold and frosty night into Thursday. A

:26:23.:26:28.

widespread, sharp frost so it will feel bitterly cold on Thursday. A

:26:29.:26:31.

light breeze but temperatures at around three degrees. But beautiful,

:26:32.:26:37.

lovely spells of sunshine ahead of the rain. You can start to see that

:26:38.:26:41.

in the north-west. It will track through Friday. It. Try, the breeze

:26:42.:26:46.

picks up and then the rain pushes in. We'll keep you posted on the

:26:47.:26:50.

amounts of rain which will both through as we had through Friday. It

:26:51.:26:56.

will sets up for a fairly quiet weekend with a lot of usable

:26:57.:27:00.

weather. The best day looks to be Thursday.

:27:01.:27:03.

Before we go - many of you have been asking about Kaye Forster -

:27:04.:27:07.

On November the 25th, she and her husband, Matthew,

:27:08.:27:12.

became the proud parents of twin boys - Freddie and Tom -

:27:13.:27:15.

They've had a bit of a struggle but the family are now doing fine.

:27:16.:27:20.

The proud parents want to say a big thank you to the staff at the NICU

:27:21.:27:24.

at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre for all their fantastic care.

:27:25.:27:30.

They're just so lovely! And if they these photos with you.

:27:31.:27:39.

They're just so lovely! And if they are watching, we wish them well. We

:27:40.:27:41.

will see you tomorrow. Goodbye. Magical new drama...

:27:42.:27:57.

The Worst Witch. Something like this

:27:58.:28:05.

could change my life. We're looking for someone

:28:06.:28:06.

who can sing, someone who can move. Someone who can keep an audience

:28:07.:28:10.

on the edge of their seat.
