From me, goodbye and a happy New Year. | :00:00. | :00:10.
Good evening and welcome to BBC London News with me, Louisa Preston. | :00:11. | :00:13.
Hundreds of people were forced to leave a West London pub | :00:14. | :00:15.
last night before it was largely destroyed by fire. | :00:16. | :00:19.
The Aeronaut pub in Acton was engulfed by flames | :00:20. | :00:21.
as a New Year's Eve party was under way. | :00:22. | :00:27.
More than 300 customers were led to safety, | :00:28. | :00:29.
with over 70 firefighters needed to bring the fire under control. | :00:30. | :00:32.
The fire alarm started going off, started seeing smoke, from the edges | :00:33. | :00:48.
of the war. And then we realised that downstairs was on fire. Last | :00:49. | :00:53.
night, during a packed New Year's Eve party, this pub called fire. The | :00:54. | :01:02.
blaze would not stop for hours. Hundreds of people had enjoyed a | :01:03. | :01:06.
circus show. One performer found herself trapped upstairs. She was | :01:07. | :01:11.
saved by her friends. It was so quick, seconds, too much smoke came | :01:12. | :01:21.
up, and we couldn't see or breathe. They managed to get us out onto the | :01:22. | :01:29.
balcony. Somehow he found a ladder. Her friend, also a performer, was | :01:30. | :01:33.
outside waiting for her. It was quite scary, and then this lady... | :01:34. | :01:42.
There was a lady that started shouting, it is going to explode! | :01:43. | :01:50.
It wasn't just the bravery of ordinary members of the public. | :01:51. | :01:53.
Officers from the next-door police station also help to save people | :01:54. | :01:58.
from the fire. One woman went into the building to save a woman having | :01:59. | :02:01.
an asthma attack. Today fire teams inspected the damage. It has raged | :02:02. | :02:06.
from the bottom to the top, the ground floor windows are smashed in, | :02:07. | :02:10.
and the roof collapsed. There is still a smell of charcoal in the | :02:11. | :02:15.
air. Six people, including some officers, were taken to hospital | :02:16. | :02:19.
suffering from smoke inhalation or minor injuries. The cause of the | :02:20. | :02:22.
fire isn't known, although several people we spoke to say they saw a | :02:23. | :02:26.
Christmas tree go up in flames. The London Fire Brigade are | :02:27. | :02:27.
investigating. Passengers using Southern Rail | :02:28. | :02:32.
services have been warned that trains will be | :02:33. | :02:34.
severely disrupted tomorrow at the end of another | :02:35. | :02:37.
three days of strike action. The warning comes as a survey | :02:38. | :02:41.
of commuters on the Southern network they don't support | :02:42. | :02:43.
the ongoing strike action. if you've been affected | :02:44. | :02:47.
by the strikes on Southern rail. We're hosting a special | :02:48. | :02:51.
televised debate next Sunday, If you'd like to take part, | :02:52. | :02:52.
email your details, including your point of view, | :02:53. | :02:56.
to [email protected]. More than 8000 performers | :02:57. | :02:57.
from around the world have taken part in London's | :02:58. | :02:59.
New Year's Day Parade. This year's theme | :03:00. | :03:01.
was blockbuster movies, and despite the rain, Londoners | :03:02. | :03:03.
and tourists lined the route, as pictures of the parade | :03:04. | :03:05.
were broadcast across the globe. It's a positively cheery | :03:06. | :03:08.
start to 2017, watched The annual New Year's Day Parade | :03:09. | :03:15.
in central London gets bigger every year and, | :03:16. | :03:21.
in light of recent terrorist attacks in Europe, 3000 extra | :03:22. | :03:24.
police were drafted in. Both the Mayor and Scotland Yard | :03:25. | :03:26.
have said there would be extra security for this | :03:27. | :03:29.
New Year's Day Parade. Organisers say they want | :03:30. | :03:33.
people to feel safe. The theme of this year's parade | :03:34. | :03:38.
was Hollywood movies and many of the Londoners who took | :03:39. | :03:40.
part acted out famous films. We've got 17 London boroughs | :03:41. | :03:43.
represented here today, 8500 performers, | :03:44. | :03:46.
around about 4000 of which They've got a wonderful, magical, | :03:47. | :03:49.
marching band culture there and they have really | :03:50. | :03:54.
embraced this event fully. We are called Alexis I Tiger | :03:55. | :03:58.
Marching Band and we're from Wilmington, Delaware | :03:59. | :04:01.
in the US. What's it like to be | :04:02. | :04:04.
in London for this? And for some, | :04:05. | :04:06.
the event had extra meaning. These children were from | :04:07. | :04:13.
the St Christopher's Hospice I was asking, how does it | :04:14. | :04:15.
feel to participate? What they said was that it felt | :04:16. | :04:20.
like they were being part of a larger community, | :04:21. | :04:24.
that they were represented, and that they were also honouring | :04:25. | :04:26.
the work of St Christopher's. For some of them, it could be one | :04:27. | :04:30.
of the last big things Even leaving their house and | :04:31. | :04:33.
commuting to the hospice can be exciting, never mind going down | :04:34. | :04:38.
central London for the parade. There was heavy rain | :04:39. | :04:40.
later in the afternoon, Let's find out what the weather's | :04:41. | :04:42.
doing with Aisling McCreevey. Hello there and | :04:43. | :04:52.
a very happy New Year. It's been rather a damp | :04:53. | :04:54.
start to the New Year, and over the next couple of hours | :04:55. | :04:57.
we continue to see all of that Now, the rain will eventually push | :04:58. | :05:00.
off to the south as we head The skies will clear, and it | :05:01. | :05:08.
will certainly be a chilly night, temperatures falling close | :05:09. | :05:12.
to or maybe dipping below freezing in one or two spots with the risk | :05:13. | :05:14.
of one or two icy stretches first There will be a lot of cloud around | :05:15. | :05:17.
at first, but increasing amounts of sunshine as we head | :05:18. | :05:22.
through the day. But despite the sunshine, | :05:23. | :05:23.
a very cold day, highs of just For Monday night into Tuesday, | :05:24. | :05:26.
temperatures falling below freezing, so you will need some extra time | :05:27. | :05:34.
if you are back to work on Tuesday morning to scrape your windscreen, | :05:35. | :05:37.
but certainly staying very cold and very frosty for | :05:38. | :05:40.
the rest of the week. Until then, have a lovely | :05:41. | :05:44.
evening, goodbye. | :05:45. | :05:49. |
