Welcome to a new week on BBC Look East. Coming up: A juror who defied | :00:16. | :00:21.
a judge by researching a trial on the Internet is sent to prison for | :00:21. | :00:26.
six months. Young Mr Bartlett is quoted 2,400 | :00:26. | :00:32.
to insure his car. If he was Miss Bartlett it would be 1,000 cheaper. | :00:32. | :00:42.
:00:42. | :00:43. | ||
I pitted in, changed Mr Timmis and it dropped by 15%. -- Mr Tim is. | :00:43. | :00:47.
Cheers as Norwich keep Chelsea at bay. But it is another raspberry | :00:47. | :00:50.
for Ipswich. And I am at the Theatre Royal in | :00:50. | :01:00.
:01:00. | :01:04. | ||
Norwich for the opening night of Hello Dolly. | :01:04. | :01:07.
Good evening. A college lecturer who served on a Crown Court jury | :01:07. | :01:11.
was jailed today after she used the internet to find out more about the | :01:11. | :01:16.
case. Theodora Dallas was a member of the jury in the trial of a man | :01:16. | :01:19.
at Luton Crown Court to was accused of causing grievous bodily harm, | :01:19. | :01:23.
but that night at home she did some research. The next day she talked | :01:23. | :01:28.
about what she discovered about the defendant to other members of the | :01:28. | :01:32.
jury. This was despite a request from the judge not to go online and | :01:32. | :01:37.
not to check out the background to the case. The details now from our | :01:37. | :01:46.
Home Affairs correspondent, Sally to do so. -- Sally Chidzoy. | :01:46. | :01:50.
I juror has been jailed. This will send shock waves through the courts | :01:50. | :01:55.
system. From now on, all jurors will have this case on their minds. | :01:55. | :02:00.
This is what happens when someone acting contempt of court. These | :02:00. | :02:04.
were to be the last moments of freedom for Theodora Dallas, seen | :02:04. | :02:10.
here in a black coat, as she entered the High Court. The | :02:10. | :02:16.
lecturer at Bedford University Pat ignored contempt of court rules and | :02:16. | :02:19.
shared information that she researched with fellow jurors. It | :02:19. | :02:22.
led to the collapse of the case. For that she was jailed for six | :02:22. | :02:26.
months. At the University today, staff made it clear they could not | :02:26. | :02:29.
talk about what had happened to their former colleague was up I am | :02:29. | :02:36.
not allowed to comment. Someone told you you could not commit? | :02:36. | :02:41.
Dallas said that her grasp of English was not that good. She has | :02:41. | :02:45.
now resigned from her job at the University. She said she had not | :02:45. | :02:50.
intended to prejudice the jury. The decision to jail her has drawn this | :02:50. | :02:54.
reaction in Luton. I think it was wrong what she did, but I do not | :02:54. | :02:58.
think it will send out a message. I do not think the punishment was | :02:58. | :03:04.
high enough. Personally, if I was on a jury and it was about someone, | :03:04. | :03:08.
I am going to look them up. I am going to find out about what they | :03:08. | :03:13.
did and what happened. Even though you are told not to? Yes. At the | :03:13. | :03:18.
end of the day, you're not supposed to but you're going to do it | :03:18. | :03:22.
because it is curiosity. probably deserves what she got, if | :03:22. | :03:26.
not a little more. She should not have done it. I do not know whether | :03:26. | :03:32.
she should have been jailed, perhaps a fine or something. | :03:32. | :03:38.
mixed reaction there. Theodora Dallas' Parker -- partner spoke to | :03:38. | :03:41.
me tonight and said he was very angry with the sentence and was | :03:41. | :03:46.
deciding what to do. He then mentioned as a European Court. The | :03:46. | :03:49.
couple have spent thousands of pounds on lawyers to try to keep | :03:49. | :03:53.
her out of jail. Clearly they did not succeed. They are now lodging | :03:53. | :03:58.
an appeal. Let us talk to the legal | :03:58. | :04:05.
commentator Joshua Rosenberg. Is this the law setting an example? | :04:05. | :04:09.
think the Lord Chief Justice was setting an example, even though the | :04:09. | :04:13.
jurors in which Theodora Dallas served were told that someone had | :04:13. | :04:16.
quite recently been sent to prison for contempt of court for a | :04:16. | :04:20.
comparable case involving Facebook, she said that the judge did not | :04:20. | :04:25.
warn her that she could face prison. Here is the Lord Chief Justice | :04:25. | :04:29.
sending out a very clear warning to everybody that, yes, if your | :04:29. | :04:33.
researcher case on the internet and tell other people about it, you | :04:33. | :04:36.
find out things about a defendant's you're not meant to know, then yes | :04:36. | :04:42.
you will go to prison. You cannot turn back the clock, can you? The | :04:42. | :04:46.
Internet is about there and people will want to look up the details. | :04:46. | :04:50.
It must be tempting but it is very dangerous. In her case, she found | :04:50. | :04:55.
out about the previous convictions of a defendant, something the jury | :04:55. | :04:58.
should not been told. If jurors research on the internet they may | :04:58. | :05:04.
find things that are inaccurate. They may know that some -- they may | :05:04. | :05:06.
not know that someone who has been convicted was subsequently cleared | :05:06. | :05:11.
on appeal. The courts are trying to hold back the tide of people who | :05:11. | :05:15.
are saying that they would do it. If everybody does that, the jury | :05:15. | :05:20.
system that we moved -- as we know it would end, and a lot of people | :05:20. | :05:24.
would think that was a very great loss because a lot of people depend | :05:24. | :05:30.
on trial by jury and have faith in it, but if you cannot trust juries | :05:30. | :05:40.
to judge on the face of it, then we may have to abandon the system. A | :05:40. | :05:44.
in the United States, jurors are simply told to pick things out of | :05:44. | :05:48.
their mind. They go to a lot of trouble to try to select jurors who | :05:48. | :05:52.
are apparently not prejudiced, who have not made up their mind. It can | :05:52. | :05:56.
take weeks and you have jury consultants advising on board saw | :05:56. | :06:00.
the jury to go for. I do not think people want to see that here. | :06:00. | :06:04.
Basically, you get the first 12 people out of the box, whether they | :06:04. | :06:14.
:06:14. | :06:15. | ||
know about the case or not. Jurors are trusted to judge cases based on | :06:15. | :06:18.
the evidence they hear in court. thank you. | :06:18. | :06:22.
Later, on the difference between being a Mr or Mrs when it comes to | :06:22. | :06:29.
car insurance. We have goals action from the weekend's football. And it | :06:29. | :06:33.
is Hello Alex at Hello Dolly. I am at the Theatre Royal in Norwich as | :06:33. | :06:36.
they get a carton ready for the first night of Hello Dolly, an | :06:36. | :06:40.
amateur production that is taking place here. It has been a tricky | :06:40. | :06:44.
time for theatres across the region but many are managing to fill seats. | :06:45. | :06:50.
How are they doing it? Find out after more news from your part of | :06:51. | :06:54.
the region. 10 senior doctors have sent a | :06:54. | :06:58.
letter to a local newspaper saying that Ipswich Hospital has a strong | :06:58. | :07:02.
future. It comes at a time when it is losing vascular surgery to | :07:02. | :07:07.
Colchester hospital, and the bid to become a Foundation Trust has | :07:07. | :07:12.
stalled because of debt. It is a long way from balancing its books | :07:12. | :07:16.
but today 10 consultants wrote of their pride in Ipswich Hospital and | :07:16. | :07:20.
the quality of its care, and their increasing dismay at reports | :07:20. | :07:27.
seeming to predict its demise. In the can descend to this morning, | :07:27. | :07:33.
these staff are planning a radiotherapy treatment programme. | :07:33. | :07:38.
We may need to think about scanning him again. Dissenters sees some | :07:38. | :07:44.
6,000 patients a year, and the number is growing. Masks are used | :07:44. | :07:49.
to make sure that patients receive precisely targeted doses of | :07:49. | :07:54.
radiotherapy. This doctor is critical of some of the media | :07:54. | :07:58.
coverage. Some of the comments were unfair and misrepresented the | :07:58. | :08:05.
reality. We have financial challenges but I am clear that we | :08:05. | :08:15.
:08:15. | :08:15. | ||
are committed to as clinicians -- committed as clinicians and we are | :08:15. | :08:18.
determined to see it through. cancer Information Centre was set | :08:18. | :08:24.
up eight years ago after a local fund-raising campaign. Jan is a | :08:24. | :08:31.
volunteer here. 15 years ago I had breast cancer myself and I felt I | :08:31. | :08:35.
wanted to put something back into the system. When you hear people in | :08:35. | :08:39.
a sense denigrating the hospital, how do you react? As far as the | :08:39. | :08:44.
cancer unit is concerned, very cross. I have not, in all the years | :08:44. | :08:48.
I have been here, spoken to a patient who is not happy with the | :08:48. | :08:53.
treatment and the support and the care that they do get from the | :08:53. | :08:58.
Oncology Unit. This week a hospital is unveiling its 2.5 million | :08:58. | :09:02.
Linear Accelerator, the latest in a major guided radiotherapy. No-one | :09:02. | :09:06.
doubts that the unit faces formidable problems, but the | :09:06. | :09:10.
message from staff to a growing local population is, we are here | :09:10. | :09:15.
for you and we are staying. There has been mixed news on jobs | :09:16. | :09:20.
in our region today. A buyer has been found for Hawkin's Bazaar. The | :09:20. | :09:26.
company, based near Beccles, went into administration last month. The | :09:26. | :09:31.
deal will save 150 jobs out of 480. They will keep eight stores open, | :09:31. | :09:36.
including those in Norwich and Braintree. In Norwich, 153 people | :09:36. | :09:42.
will lose their jobs at contractor Fountains. He had contracts for | :09:42. | :09:50.
street cleaning and managing parts, open spaces and cemeteries. People | :09:50. | :09:54.
have families. I am young, so why will be all right. The older boys | :09:54. | :10:00.
have nothing in front of them. Customs officers carried out a | :10:00. | :10:04.
number of raids on shops in Essex today in the hunt for counterfeit | :10:04. | :10:09.
alcohol. The target for teams from HM Revenue and Customs was a off- | :10:09. | :10:11.
licences in Colchester. They were looking for bottles of vodka which | :10:11. | :10:18.
could be poisonous. This is a raid, but not for drugs. | :10:18. | :10:24.
A what they are looking for our items, Ellis it goods including | :10:24. | :10:31.
alcohol and tobacco, also food products that may be out of date or | :10:31. | :10:35.
may have been stored or labelled in the incorrect way. Mainly it was | :10:35. | :10:39.
alcohol. Shelves were checked for anything that look suspicious was | :10:39. | :10:44.
up so far, in one job, we have found quite a few bottles of vodka | :10:44. | :10:48.
or which has not had any duty paid on it. There are no stamps on the | :10:48. | :10:56.
bottles. They may or may not be counterfeit. The year looks suspect. | :10:56. | :11:03.
-- they look suspect. These photographs show spirits taking in | :11:03. | :11:07.
previous raids, Hall warehouses full of them, some of them brewed | :11:07. | :11:13.
illegally. It has been found to contain anti-freeze or worse. | :11:13. | :11:17.
Screen wash is a common factor that we have fun. I opened a bottle a | :11:17. | :11:21.
couple of weeks ago and it smelt of acetone. That is very dangerous to | :11:21. | :11:26.
drink. If you're a boy in a bottle of alcohol and it really does look | :11:26. | :11:31.
too good to be true, it is. alcohol is being taken away by the | :11:31. | :11:35.
officers. If they suspect it is counter feet, it will be tested and | :11:35. | :11:41.
will also be destroyed. -- counterfeit. | :11:41. | :11:45.
The it has been revealed that Essex Police by nearly 2.4 million on | :11:45. | :11:48.
the operation to clear the illegal traveller has site at Dale Farm. It | :11:48. | :11:58.
:11:58. | :12:00. | ||
was completed in November. -- a travellers' site. | :12:00. | :12:04.
None of our teams won at the weekend. | :12:04. | :12:08.
Norwich manager Paul Lambert said survival is still the main focus. | :12:08. | :12:12.
They drove -- they drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Saturday, their first | :12:12. | :12:16.
clean sheet of the season, keeping them in the top half of the Premier | :12:16. | :12:19.
League. Chelsea may have had more shots, more chances, more | :12:19. | :12:25.
possession, their players certainly cost more. Norwich were disciplined | :12:25. | :12:33.
and determined. They paid less than 500,000 for Grant Holt but he is | :12:33. | :12:37.
worth his weight in gold. Fernando Torres looks like less of a bargain | :12:37. | :12:47.
:12:47. | :12:53. | ||
at the moment. He was taking off. Dizzier at 20 -- 0-0 draw was | :12:53. | :12:57.
priceless. It is Norwich's first clean sheet of the season. They are | :12:57. | :13:03.
unbeaten in 2012. It stretches the unbeaten run to five games. Any | :13:03. | :13:05.
Premier League point is not to be sniffed at, especially when it | :13:05. | :13:09.
comes against one of the big hitters. First clean sheet of the | :13:09. | :13:14.
season, I thought we were amazing. Really proud. Chelsea expected to | :13:14. | :13:19.
win 3-0. It is absolutely brilliant. Can you do leave how well they are | :13:19. | :13:23.
doing this season? A they have been fantastic. Lambert has done a | :13:23. | :13:28.
fantastic job on a shoestring. Chelsea must be wondering why they | :13:28. | :13:32.
spend all that money. Are you hoping just to survive on a bit | :13:32. | :13:39.
more? We have to keep our heads first. See what Lambert can do. | :13:39. | :13:44.
think we can look above us. We're trying to survive and build the | :13:44. | :13:49.
club up. We're not getting carried away. We will take each game as it | :13:49. | :13:53.
comes. Hopefully by the end of the season we will still be up there. | :13:53. | :13:57.
The fans left happy again. Norwich now break for the FA Cup in the | :13:57. | :14:07.
:14:07. | :14:11. | ||
knowledge their Premier League Ipswich Town have now dropped to | :14:11. | :14:21.
:14:21. | :14:22. | ||
4th in the table. The game turned on a bizarre incident. Their | :14:22. | :14:29.
goalkeeper was sent off. Ipswich fell apart. Robert Snodgrass could | :14:29. | :14:38.
hardly believe his luck. Leeds did not have to try to hard for a third. | :14:38. | :14:44.
It finished 3-1. The manager had no complaints about the red card. | :14:44. | :14:54.
:14:54. | :14:57. | ||
should have stayed on his line. We were up against it with 10 men. | :14:57. | :15:05.
That goal was a catalogue of errors. They will never score three easier | :15:05. | :15:10.
goals. In League One Colchester fans vented their frustration at | :15:10. | :15:16.
John Ward after they lost at John Ward after they lost at | :15:16. | :15:22.
Chesterfield. Southend are still top of League Two despite losing at | :15:22. | :15:32.
:15:32. | :15:33. | ||
Shrewsbury. Southend are level on points with Crawley. You can see | :15:33. | :15:38.
extended highlights of your team on late kick-off tonight. There is a | :15:38. | :15:48.
special report on Ipswich Town. Has special report on Ipswich Town. Has | :15:48. | :15:54.
progress been made over the last progress been made over the last | :15:54. | :15:57.
four years? The defence has been making these mistakes all season. | :15:57. | :16:07.
:16:07. | :16:09. | ||
You are the manager. You have had the resources. More on that tonight | :16:09. | :16:19.
:16:19. | :16:26. | ||
Men and women may be as different as Mars and Venus but in their eyes | :16:26. | :16:30.
of the law there are almost always equal. | :16:30. | :16:34.
They exception is car insurance. It is a fact that women are safer | :16:34. | :16:38.
drivers than men. That means insurance companies charge men more. | :16:38. | :16:43.
The gap between a premium for a young man and I young woman can be | :16:43. | :16:48.
huge. When this man wanted to ensure his | :16:48. | :16:55.
first car he was quoted 2,400. So for a laugh he reapplied and | :16:55. | :17:05.
:17:05. | :17:05. | ||
there are women's name. The quote was 1,000 less. | :17:05. | :17:12.
This is not exactly the badge of a boy racer. I am sensible. I drive | :17:12. | :17:21.
carefully. All I want to do is drive. It is sex discrimination. It | :17:21. | :17:27.
is out of proportion. But an is cheap compared to some | :17:27. | :17:35.
courts. Young male drivers are seen as a | :17:35. | :17:40.
higher risk. I can understand the premium being slightly higher, but | :17:40. | :17:48.
you cannot justify charging double. This could be one solution. This | :17:48. | :17:53.
man agrees to have his car fitted with a monitoring device. It | :17:53. | :17:57.
transmits data to his insurance company. It looks at different | :17:57. | :18:03.
behaviours such as speed, and acceleration. It tracks the | :18:03. | :18:08.
individual behaviours. The insurance is priced more fairly | :18:08. | :18:18.
depending upon how he is driving. This is hundreds of pounds cheaper | :18:18. | :18:28.
:18:28. | :18:30. | ||
than what my friends are paying. is part of the compensation culture. | :18:30. | :18:33.
While there is fair access to justice for those with genuine | :18:33. | :18:39.
claims there are those who make fraudulent claims. The rules will | :18:39. | :18:45.
soon change. Under European law men and women will soon paid similar | :18:45. | :18:55.
:18:55. | :18:56. | ||
premiums. Small insurance for this man. -- small comfort. | :18:56. | :19:00.
Earlier I spoke to Rob Cummings from the Association of British | :19:00. | :19:10.
:19:10. | :19:14. | ||
Insurers. Young male drivers have a high claims frequency. They have a | :19:14. | :19:23.
poor safety record on the road. One in three male drivers aged 17 or 18 | :19:23. | :19:29.
will make a claim. For the equivalent female drivers it is one | :19:29. | :19:35.
in sex. In Europe you cannot discriminate between men and women. | :19:35. | :19:40.
Why has that rule not come into force here? That comes into force | :19:40. | :19:50.
:19:50. | :19:52. | ||
next year. Insurers will no longer be able to use gender. It will have | :19:52. | :20:01.
a significant impact. The European Court decided that insurers need | :20:01. | :20:07.
time to adapt to the change. Does the insurance industry believe that | :20:07. | :20:13.
this ruling is wrong? You still make differentiation on the basis | :20:13. | :20:20.
of age? We like to look at as many aspects as possible when placing a | :20:20. | :20:27.
premium for customers. I do not want to be a cynic, but when the | :20:27. | :20:33.
ruling comes into force, will it be that the insurance of women goes up | :20:33. | :20:42.
and the insurers are men does not come down? It does mean that women | :20:42. | :20:45.
will see an increase in their premiums? That seems unfair. | :20:46. | :20:55.
:20:56. | :20:58. | ||
should balance out. We need reform to a compensation | :20:58. | :21:05.
system. It is dysfunctional. We need to see significant reforms in | :21:05. | :21:10.
the way that young drivers learn to drive in this country. Thank you. | :21:10. | :21:18.
There is more on that issue on Inside Out tonight at 7:25pm. | :21:18. | :21:25.
Please get in touch if you have any views on that story. | :21:25. | :21:31.
2011 was a tough year for theatres. Ticket sales fell by one million. | :21:31. | :21:36.
Theatre managers blame a reduction in grants funding and the economic | :21:36. | :21:41.
downturn. But in our region there are signs that most theatres can | :21:41. | :21:45.
survive. Tonight in Norwich they are expecting an almost full house | :21:45. | :21:50.
for an amateur production of Hello Dolly. | :21:50. | :22:00.
I am backstage. It is opening night. I am good data onto the stage. It | :22:00. | :22:07.
is all set. One a two audience members are just turning up. It has | :22:07. | :22:13.
been a tough year. Some theatres up and well. Four other theatres it | :22:13. | :22:23.
:22:23. | :22:32. | ||
They have had some big names at this theatre. But now the theatre | :22:32. | :22:38.
faces an uncertain future. It is owned by Suffolk coastal District | :22:38. | :22:42.
Council. With audiences falling the council is now saying enough is | :22:42. | :22:49.
enough. The theatre costs 250,000 per year. We are faced with falling | :22:49. | :22:58.
audience numbers. It is costing 7.60 per person to get somebody | :22:58. | :23:07.
through the door. The theatre started out as a spa. Then there | :23:07. | :23:11.
was a bandstand. Then there was a Floral Hall. | :23:11. | :23:15.
The theatre manager says finding the right show to be torn is | :23:15. | :23:21.
challenging. If a show does not do well it is disappointing. Sometimes | :23:21. | :23:31.
:23:31. | :23:34. | ||
you feel that you have failed. It At the Cambridge Arts Theatre the | :23:34. | :23:39.
future is better. The chief executive knows how difficult it is | :23:39. | :23:49.
:23:49. | :23:52. | ||
in places like Felixstowe. But here attendances are up by 20 %. If you | :23:52. | :24:02.
:24:02. | :24:03. | ||
put a great Sean people will come and see it. -- put a good show on. | :24:03. | :24:07.
Back in Felixstowe the council is hoping to attract offers from | :24:07. | :24:11.
companies that might hope to take on the pavilion. In these difficult | :24:11. | :24:17.
times nobody wants to see this historic Theatre Co Down. | :24:17. | :24:23.
They are testing the smoke machine here at this theatre. Let us have a | :24:23. | :24:30.
chat with the press officer. Have you found that it is tough to get | :24:30. | :24:36.
audiences in the door? People are thinking very carefully about what | :24:36. | :24:39.
they spend their money on. We are working hard to get the message out | :24:39. | :24:49.
:24:49. | :24:58. | ||
about our shows. Is it Taf because you do not get arts funding? -- is | :24:58. | :25:08.
:25:08. | :25:08. | ||
it difficult? We have a loyalty from our patrons. If you would like | :25:08. | :25:12.
to come and see this production it is on all week. There are tickets | :25:12. | :25:18.
is on all week. There are tickets available every night this week. | :25:18. | :25:25.
Here is the weather: Sleet rather than snow. | :25:25. | :25:32.
More about that in a moment. Thank you for sending in this | :25:32. | :25:39.
photograph of the northern light. It was taken last night. It is | :25:39. | :25:43.
caused by a stream of particles from the San colliding in the upper | :25:43. | :25:51.
atmosphere. It is beautiful. You may get to see the Northern Lights | :25:51. | :25:57.
tonight in the northern parts of our region. | :25:57. | :26:02.
Over the next few hours the last of any showers will clear away. It | :26:02. | :26:09.
will be largely clear for much of the night. | :26:09. | :26:17.
Some cloud will push him from the West. | :26:17. | :26:24.
Temperatures stay above freezing on the coast. They will be a frost and | :26:24. | :26:34.
:26:34. | :26:39. | ||
Tomorrow there is a weather front pushing in from the West. It is | :26:39. | :26:47.
bringing in rain. The rain will push eastwards. There will be some | :26:47. | :26:57.
:26:57. | :27:01. | ||
sleet. It will not be the brightest and not the warmest either. Winds | :27:01. | :27:09.
will settle to light to moderate by the afternoon. The remit should | :27:09. | :27:16.
start to pull away to the east as the afternoon progresses. -- the | :27:16. | :27:20. |
