Hello and welcome to Look East. In the programme tonight: Trains | :00:00. | :00:09.
cancelled, bridges closed, flood alerts in place and warnings. This | :00:10. | :00:12.
could be the toughest Christmas getaway in years. | :00:13. | :00:15.
21 years after their daughter was murdered. The parents of Johanna | :00:16. | :00:18.
Young appeal for help to catch her killer. There must be somebody | :00:19. | :00:33.
somewhere with some information. Pressure on A We were on the | :00:34. | :00:37.
wards at Peteborough City Hospital on what the experts called "Black | :00:38. | :00:40.
Friday". And a window on another world. The | :00:41. | :00:44.
tiny village, and a giant advent calendar. | :00:45. | :00:56.
Hello, first tonight a warning of travel chaos to come as gale force | :00:57. | :01:03.
winds start to batter the region. The wind has been getting stronger | :01:04. | :01:07.
and the rain has been getting heavier all afternoon. The Dartford | :01:08. | :01:10.
Crossing bridge on the M25 was closed just after 1pm. Lots of | :01:11. | :01:14.
railway services have either been cancelled or changed. And the worst | :01:15. | :01:19.
is still to come with wind speeds likely to peak overnight. The fear | :01:20. | :01:24.
is we could wake up to flooding tomorrow morning. This report is | :01:25. | :01:29.
from Debbie Tubby. These are the last few trains running to schedule | :01:30. | :01:34.
this afternoon. Many services have now been cancelled or altered ` | :01:35. | :01:37.
there will also be no trains running tomorrow morning until 10am. Running | :01:38. | :01:41.
at lower speeds is the most sensible thing to do. It's safe as well. It | :01:42. | :01:45.
means we can't run the full timetable so there are alterations | :01:46. | :01:49.
in place this evening. During the storm in October, 200 trees fell on | :01:50. | :01:52.
the region's rail network and many homes were left without electricity. | :01:53. | :01:59.
UK Power Network says it has brought in extra staff to repair any damage | :02:00. | :02:06.
tonight and man its call centre. This afternoon, the QE2 bridge at | :02:07. | :02:09.
Dartford was closed. It will stay that way until 4am tomorrow morning. | :02:10. | :02:14.
Essex Police say the tunnels will remain open. Congestion is expected. | :02:15. | :02:19.
The Highways Agency will make a decision later tonight on whether to | :02:20. | :02:29.
close the Orwell Bridge in Suffolk. WeatherQuest says the strongest | :02:30. | :02:32.
winds will hit between midnight and 2am. Much of central and western | :02:33. | :02:39.
East Anglia will be getting 50 to 60 mile per hour winds. At the coast, | :02:40. | :02:45.
it's about 70 miles per hour for the top winds. Fairly damaging. Drivers | :02:46. | :02:52.
are also being warned to be aware of surface water. Unlike the floods | :02:53. | :02:57.
caused by the tidal surge two weeks ago, the Environment Agency says | :02:58. | :03:00.
this time the concern is the heavy bursts of rain. As that water makes | :03:01. | :03:07.
its way down to the rivers, we need to be vigilant. We will be. We'll | :03:08. | :03:11.
issue the appropriate alerts and warnings. We want to make sure we | :03:12. | :03:16.
get the message out to the general public. At Norwich International, | :03:17. | :03:19.
flights to Manchester have been cancelled and passengers will now be | :03:20. | :03:31.
taken by coach. For the latest on the railways we can go to Kevin | :03:32. | :03:34.
Burch who's at Ipswich Station. How's it looking Kevin? Frustrating. | :03:35. | :03:51.
This has been a lot of anger here. `` There has been. It has been a | :03:52. | :03:57.
horrible night. Not a lot of festive cheer. People wanted to get home but | :03:58. | :04:06.
they haven't been able to do that. One guy said he left London at two | :04:07. | :04:12.
o'clock and he has only just got here. Part of that has just been | :04:13. | :04:18.
because of the broken down train. Major problems in Essex. Many | :04:19. | :04:26.
services are disrupted. Replacement buses in place. It is all expected | :04:27. | :04:31.
to go until nine o'clock this evening. I listened to the news this | :04:32. | :04:39.
morning and I turned it off because I was getting frightened. But it was | :04:40. | :04:43.
all ok. Not too bad. A little wait here and there. No trains till | :04:44. | :04:47.
10am... I can't open up my business. No notice, either. It's not good | :04:48. | :04:50.
enough. The government has to step in and do something about it. It's | :04:51. | :04:56.
no good to the paying customer. Will you travel tomorrow? No. My business | :04:57. | :05:01.
is closed and I can't travel. I've got to give people the day off. On a | :05:02. | :05:06.
busy Christmas travelling day it's going to be very disruptive. You | :05:07. | :05:11.
want it to be running as smooth as possible, and for them to keep | :05:12. | :05:15.
disruptions to a minimum. In my experience, it's all fine. You're | :05:16. | :05:25.
better safe than sorry. There have been some problems early on at the | :05:26. | :05:34.
Orwell Bridge. Egg is now closed to high sided vehicles. `` it is now. | :05:35. | :05:47.
No trains running until ten o'clock tomorrow morning. Elsewhere, here | :05:48. | :05:54.
are some other problems. And you can get more information by | :05:55. | :06:09.
going to BBC News online, where the weather is the lead story on the | :06:10. | :06:12.
home page. Tomorrow morning you can also listen to the Breakfast Shows | :06:13. | :06:15.
on BBC Radio Norfolk, Radio Suffolk or BBC Essex to get the latest on | :06:16. | :06:19.
the disruption where you live. The parents of a 14`year`old from | :06:20. | :06:23.
Norfolk who went missing 21 years ago tonight have made a new appeal | :06:24. | :06:28.
for help in finding her killer. Joanna Young disappeared after | :06:29. | :06:31.
failing to turn up for her morning paper round in the town of Watton. | :06:32. | :06:34.
Her body was discovered three days later in a frozen pond. Johanna | :06:35. | :06:40.
Young opening her Christmas presents in an old family video. But 21 years | :06:41. | :06:45.
ago, her presents remained unopened at the end of her bed. She had gone | :06:46. | :06:50.
into Watton town centre on a cold and foggy night on the 23rd of | :06:51. | :06:55.
December. Then she failed to turn up for her morning paper round. On | :06:56. | :06:58.
Boxing Day, her partially`clothed body was found face down in a frozen | :06:59. | :07:03.
pond. A postmortem showed she'd suffered a fractured skull and died | :07:04. | :07:08.
from drowning. After the shocking discovery, a special service was | :07:09. | :07:14.
held at Wotton St Mary's Church. We pray today for the family of | :07:15. | :07:18.
Johanna. We remember Robert and Carol during this time of grief. We | :07:19. | :07:23.
pray for the police as they seek to find and apprehend the person | :07:24. | :07:33.
responsible. She came into the doorway... She asked if it was all | :07:34. | :07:44.
right if she went out. I said yes. You said don't be late. Then she | :07:45. | :07:52.
went off. Johanna's siblings have given their parents the gift of | :07:53. | :07:57.
grandchildren. But Robert and Carol still mourn the loss of Johanna and | :07:58. | :08:00.
the life she might have lived. 21 years on, they still hope somebody | :08:01. | :08:06.
can give them answers. There must be somebody, somewhere with a little | :08:07. | :08:09.
bit of information that may help the police ` to help find out who did | :08:10. | :08:17.
murder Johanna. Somebody knows something. Somebody knows who did | :08:18. | :08:28.
it. Why can't they tell? It would mean a lot, to have it all sorted. | :08:29. | :08:34.
For her to get the justice she deserves. I urge people to come | :08:35. | :08:38.
forward, to bring those people to justice. Also to provide the family | :08:39. | :08:43.
with answers about what happened to their 14`year`old daughter. She was | :08:44. | :08:48.
a vibrant, young, carefree teenager, full of life and energy. They miss | :08:49. | :08:56.
her deeply. On Christmas Day, Robert will go to St Mary's Churchyard | :08:57. | :09:00.
where Johanna is buried. He'll talk to her as he does on every Christmas | :09:01. | :09:09.
and birthday. He and Carol dream of getting an answer to the question of | :09:10. | :09:17.
who killed his daughter. Colchester Zoo has told the BBC it | :09:18. | :09:21.
stands by its decision not to tell visitors about the escape of some of | :09:22. | :09:25.
its wolves last month. Five timber wolves broke free from their | :09:26. | :09:28.
enclosure at the end of November. Three of them were shot dead. | :09:29. | :09:31.
Visitors inside the zoo were told it was a medical emergency. The police | :09:32. | :09:35.
were told about the escape at 8am but the zoo stayed open until 3pm | :09:36. | :09:39.
that afternoon. A couple from Norfolk who lost | :09:40. | :09:42.
everything when their home was destroyed in the tidal surge say | :09:43. | :09:45.
they are amazed by the kindness of other people. Wesley Woods and Helen | :09:46. | :09:49.
Robinson, who live in Walcott, now have a new home filled with | :09:50. | :09:52.
furniture which has been donated. Walcott, on the north Norfolk coast, | :09:53. | :09:57.
was badly hit by the storm surge. Look East filmed a couple whose | :09:58. | :10:00.
caravan was destroyed. But they were already amazed by the kindness of | :10:01. | :10:07.
strangers. We've been given clothes... Coats... One guy we | :10:08. | :10:11.
didn't even know walked up and gave us the contents of his wallet. That | :10:12. | :10:15.
was just the start. Kindness has put clothes on my family's back and | :10:16. | :10:23.
filled this new home with furniture. It's restored my faith in human | :10:24. | :10:28.
nature. We've had a dining table. Presents. The kindness people have | :10:29. | :10:35.
been showing... Amazing. We've had the arms of the community wrapped | :10:36. | :10:40.
around us and we feel nice and warm. Fridge freezer from a lady who | :10:41. | :10:44.
helped us on the first night when we had nowhere to stay. People turning | :10:45. | :10:51.
up with cups and mugs. Dishes as well. Pots and pans. All of these | :10:52. | :11:03.
things. Everything you can see. I've got so much. Amazing kindness. It'll | :11:04. | :11:11.
be a much better Christmas than you envisaged a few weeks ago? So much | :11:12. | :11:20.
better. I feel on top of the world. At a local pub, musical firefighters | :11:21. | :11:24.
raised money for a flood fund which has already reached six figures. The | :11:25. | :11:28.
fear here, though, is that it won't be long before the community is | :11:29. | :11:42.
tested again. Still to come on the programme | :11:43. | :11:45.
tonight: Chris Bell will be here with the latest on those storms. | :11:46. | :11:48.
And in football, another manager bites the dust. Aidy Boothroyd pays | :11:49. | :11:52.
the price after a torrid season at Northampton Town. | :11:53. | :12:04.
Hospital managers have been warning for months about the building | :12:05. | :12:07.
pressure in our Accident and Emergency departments this winter. | :12:08. | :12:10.
And we were warned that last weekend would be particularly bad ` so much | :12:11. | :12:13.
so that they were predicting last Friday would be 'Black Friday'. But | :12:14. | :12:18.
what was the reality for the NHS? Well, we were on the wards at | :12:19. | :12:21.
Peterborough City Hospital. Jo Taylor has this report. It's only | :12:22. | :12:35.
8pm and the place is full. This woman is having breathing | :12:36. | :12:38.
difficulties. She has a history of health problems. In the next | :12:39. | :12:42.
cubicle, a man has been brought in uncoscious. He's been in a road | :12:43. | :12:48.
accident and is being taken for a scan to assess how badly injured he | :12:49. | :12:52.
is. The Emergency Department has seen more than a 50% rise in the | :12:53. | :12:56.
number of people turning up over the Christmas fortnight over the last | :12:57. | :13:00.
five years. When I first started we had a minor injury unit and another | :13:01. | :13:08.
area... It was rare to use it, never mind fill. This is three times the | :13:09. | :13:14.
size and full. This man is worried about redness following a hernia | :13:15. | :13:17.
operation. He called the non`emergency 111 number and told | :13:18. | :13:23.
not to come here. They said a GP would ring us in six hours. We | :13:24. | :13:33.
didn't want to wait. We were a bit concerned. So we came down here and | :13:34. | :13:44.
hopefully we will be seen soon. One in ten who turn up do not need to. | :13:45. | :13:48.
The problem is that doctors deal with are getting more serious. We | :13:49. | :14:02.
have got a wide range of patients. Patients with cases revolving around | :14:03. | :14:12.
XS alcohol and many other things. `` excess alcohol. Dominic was a week | :14:13. | :14:20.
after row. He is being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital. That is | :14:21. | :14:38.
life. But they are not able to save everybody. There are two deaths this | :14:39. | :14:45.
evening. It was quite moving for us. The patient had died but they were | :14:46. | :14:49.
still very grateful. That is touching. If we don't feel like that | :14:50. | :15:00.
then we shouldn't be nurses. By midnight, another 40 patients have | :15:01. | :15:05.
come through the door. It is a typical Friday night for staff as | :15:06. | :15:12.
they head towards Christmas. Dr Dan Poulter is a Health Minister. He's | :15:13. | :15:15.
also the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. Late this afternoon, | :15:16. | :15:19.
I asked what we could do about so many people going to A when they | :15:20. | :15:22.
don't need to. It's absolutely right that if someone is unwell they | :15:23. | :15:26.
should be seen quickly. That's what A is for. But the challenge is to | :15:27. | :15:30.
help people understand that it's not in their interests ` or the | :15:31. | :15:33.
interests of other, sick patients ` to put extra pressure on A for | :15:34. | :15:36.
routine complaints like a sore throat. The appropriate thing to do | :15:37. | :15:43.
is go to see their GP the next morning. Part of that is about | :15:44. | :15:47.
doctors in A pointing it out to people. Next time they might want to | :15:48. | :15:54.
see their GP rather than come to A when it's a relatively minor | :15:55. | :15:58.
complaint. One of the big problems is that it's not always easy to see | :15:59. | :16:06.
your own GP. Do we have enough? Do we pay them enough? The average GP | :16:07. | :16:13.
is paid around ?105,000 a year which is a good salary by anybody's | :16:14. | :16:18.
standards. Most of them won't be doing evenings or weekends. Some | :16:19. | :16:22.
will, of course. The challenge is to increase the number of GPs. If we | :16:23. | :16:32.
want to move to a position where we have more working over evenings and | :16:33. | :16:35.
weekends then it's not just about getting the current GPs to work | :16:36. | :16:38.
later... It's about making sure we have enough bodies on the ground to | :16:39. | :16:44.
provide the service. Is one of the problems that people move around so | :16:45. | :16:48.
much in the country, and Europe as a whole, that they don't bother | :16:49. | :16:54.
signing up with a GP? There is a challenge relating to high | :16:55. | :16:59.
population. It happens in inner`city areas as well as some rural ones. As | :17:00. | :17:08.
much as a third of the GP register can change on a yearly basis. `` an | :17:09. | :17:15.
annual basis. Younger people are particularly bad at signing up. It | :17:16. | :17:21.
tends to be them who turn up at A for more trivial complaints. When | :17:22. | :17:24.
they do turn up with a minor complaint, the A department should | :17:25. | :17:28.
link them to a GP so that in the future that person won't be putting | :17:29. | :17:47.
extra pressure on. Thank you. And the BBC is keeping a close eye on | :17:48. | :17:50.
how our Accident and Emergency departments cope this winter. You | :17:51. | :17:53.
can actually see how your local hospital is getting on by going to | :17:54. | :17:57.
the BBC website online and searching for 'NHS Winter' You can put a post | :17:58. | :18:01.
code in ` the studio here is NR2 1BH ` and we get the Norfolk and Norwich | :18:02. | :18:04.
University Hospital. You can see how many patients are | :18:05. | :18:21.
being seen within four hours in A And if you scroll down you can also | :18:22. | :18:25.
compare how your hospital is doing compared to the England average. | :18:26. | :18:34.
Plenty of opportunity on the site to share your own NHS experiences too. | :18:35. | :18:42.
In football, Northampton Town go into Christmas and the New Year | :18:43. | :18:45.
battling for survival in the Football League and trying to find a | :18:46. | :18:48.
new manager. Aidy Boothroyd was sacked at the weekend following a | :18:49. | :18:52.
heavy defeat. Back in May they were at Wembley in the League Two | :18:53. | :18:55.
play`off final. But they've only won four games this season and the | :18:56. | :18:59.
manager paid the price. Saturday. Wycombe Wanderers at Sixfields. Aidy | :19:00. | :19:03.
Boothroyd needed a win but he didn't get it. The Cobblers lost 4`1 ` and | :19:04. | :19:08.
at 5:39pm, less than an hour after the final whistle ` Boothroyd was | :19:09. | :19:14.
sacked. We lost the manager at the weekend. He was a friend, | :19:15. | :19:17.
particularly to me. The players got on with him well. But they reacted. | :19:18. | :19:23.
We had a little talk and I thought they trained very well. Aidy | :19:24. | :19:26.
Boothroyd joined Northampton Town just over two years ago. He'd | :19:27. | :19:30.
already taken Watford into the Premier League, followed by spells | :19:31. | :19:35.
at Colchester United and Coventry. In May, the Cobblers made it to the | :19:36. | :19:39.
League Two play`offs and the Wembley final... But they lost. And this | :19:40. | :19:43.
season has been a disaster. This is what Boothroyd told Look East just a | :19:44. | :19:48.
few weeks ago. You know you're going to have highs and lows. There are | :19:49. | :19:54.
more lows than highs. Fortunately, I'm getting the opportunity to | :19:55. | :19:59.
change it and turn it around. A lot of guys in this day would have been | :20:00. | :20:08.
chopped by now. `` in this day and age. Whether he realised or not, the | :20:09. | :20:11.
board was losing patience. The Cobblers are bottom of League Two | :20:12. | :20:15.
with just four wins. I know there was gloom after the decision. I just | :20:16. | :20:22.
feel we have to have a lift. We can't have a negative opinion. I | :20:23. | :20:26.
think the club are taking a gamble by replacing him at this stage. He | :20:27. | :20:30.
knows the players. He's been backed financially. He looked to be getting | :20:31. | :20:36.
more in January as well. After Saturday's final whistle, maybe | :20:37. | :20:40.
Boothroyd did know what was coming. Instead of thanking the players on | :20:41. | :20:44.
the pitch, he looked on then turned and walked straight down the tunnel. | :20:45. | :20:48.
Within minutes he'd be sacked. Another manager looking for another | :20:49. | :20:59.
job. A former sports editor here at BBC | :21:00. | :21:03.
Look East has died at the age of 82. John Myatt presented sports | :21:04. | :21:06.
bulletins during the 1970s and 1980s. He was also a reporter and | :21:07. | :21:09.
presenter on the radio programme Roundabout East Anglia. He died at | :21:10. | :21:22.
Southwold Hospital yesterday. There was a time when you knew what | :21:23. | :21:25.
to expect with an advent calendar. Mary and Joseph round the crib, | :21:26. | :21:29.
perhaps a few shepherds in a field or some wise men on camels. These | :21:30. | :21:32.
days it's anything from a Christmas tree to pop groups like One | :21:33. | :21:35.
Direction. And behind every door, anything from chocolate to whiskey. | :21:36. | :21:39.
But in the village of Abington Pigot in Cambridgeshire they've gone one | :21:40. | :21:42.
better. The whole village has, in effect, become an advent calendar. | :21:43. | :21:44.
Every night throughout December, people have gathered at a house and | :21:45. | :21:49.
opened another window. Alex Dolan explains. It is the eve of Christmas | :21:50. | :22:04.
Eve. For a small Cambridge village the countdown has been extra | :22:05. | :22:09.
special. People usually open and Advent calendar but here in Abington | :22:10. | :22:13.
Pigotts they have taken the idea even farther. They have transformed | :22:14. | :22:19.
the house is in two Advent calendar windows. `` their houses. `` into | :22:20. | :22:33.
Advent calendar windows. I tried to gauge interest and I had a great | :22:34. | :22:43.
response. We have got lots of things here. Beyers, rabbits... `` Bears. | :22:44. | :22:58.
What has it been like seeing all these windows? Everybody has had a | :22:59. | :23:05.
different slant. It has been great to get together with people even | :23:06. | :23:12.
just for 15 or 20 minutes. It has been lovely. It has been amazing. We | :23:13. | :23:26.
are new to the village of this is our first experience. 24 minced | :23:27. | :23:34.
pies. 24 glasses of wine. Lots of friendly people. | :23:35. | :23:51.
The villagers have really got into the spirit of things. With just two | :23:52. | :24:01.
windows left to open, they are likely that next year will be even | :24:02. | :24:10.
better. `` they are all agreed that next year will be even better. That | :24:11. | :24:12.
music will be in my head all night! Now for the weather. I am going to | :24:13. | :24:38.
show you some graphics. Here are some very cold air over my homeland | :24:39. | :24:51.
of North America. `` Here is some. There is a real contrast in | :24:52. | :24:54.
temperature. It has allowed these big areas of low pressure to | :24:55. | :25:01.
develop. You can see at streaming over. `` it. Some of these winds | :25:02. | :25:15.
have been very fast. When you get strong winds like this, over the top | :25:16. | :25:21.
of low pressure, it becomes quite fierce. Fort and eight, across our | :25:22. | :25:33.
region, there will be gale force winds and some strong gusts. `` For | :25:34. | :25:37.
tonight. The Met office has a wind their brain will be with us right | :25:38. | :26:01.
throughout the night. `` the rain. 60 to 70 mph is for the winds. These | :26:02. | :26:21.
will come at around midnight. There could be some damage done. At the | :26:22. | :26:26.
end of the night it will be confined to eastern areas. It will start to | :26:27. | :26:35.
ease down eventually. The rainbow sweep away to the east leaving us | :26:36. | :26:39.
with a much nicer day. `` the rain will. High temperatures of 78 | :26:40. | :26:55.
Celsius. `` seven to eight Celsius. For Christmas Day it looks like a | :26:56. | :27:03.
mild day. That is how things will go into Boxing Day. We will see the | :27:04. | :27:13.
wind is picking up again. That could potentially cause some strong winds. | :27:14. | :27:22.
See you tomorrow. | :27:23. | :27:26. |
