Above it all, it got me meeting people again. | :04:40. | :04:47.
Do you see an awful lot of loneliness? | :04:48. | :04:49.
And we hear comments like, it is just so nice to have ` chat. | :04:50. | :04:54.
I haven't had a conversation with someone for several daxs. | :04:55. | :04:57.
It is little things like that that tell us that people | :04:58. | :05:00.
really welcome the opportunity for social interaction. | :05:01. | :05:03.
You just have these very sad thoughts around the whole btsiness | :05:04. | :05:11.

Jeff's mental and physical health suffered | :05:14. | :05:16.
when he gave up his job as a stage manager in Harlow and retirdd. | :05:17. | :05:19.
The well`being service of Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust helped | :05:20. | :05:22.
It isn't because you are on your own physically. | :05:23. | :05:27.
I think what happens is that you go into a lonely place. | :05:28. | :05:31.
It is almost like being in the middle of the crowd | :05:32. | :05:34.
Can you understand Jeff's situation and the reason why he becamd | :05:35. | :05:40.
His work mattered a lot to him, and moving away from that can be a real | :05:41. | :05:47.
difficulty, and although to some people he is able to talk to people | :05:48. | :05:51.
easily, he has lost a role and that can be a real challenge for people | :05:52. | :05:56.
Some 37,000 people over 65 in Norfolk and Suffolk are said to | :05:57. | :06:02.
The NHS well`being times and the Coffee Caravan are helping | :06:03. | :06:08.
Earlier I spoke to Jack Neill`Hall from the Campaign to End Loneliness. | :06:09. | :06:17.
I asked him why he thought so many people were lonely nowadays. | :06:18. | :06:22.
What is surprising to some hs that it has remained consistent over | :06:23. | :06:26.
It is incredibly sad because the reasons why people | :06:27. | :06:30.
become lonely are the things well out of their own control. | :06:31. | :06:33.
We know that bereavement is a trigger. | :06:34. | :06:35.
Moving house, losing one's job, retiring, because a lot | :06:36. | :06:39.
of people's social life is built around their worklife. | :06:40. | :06:44.
Our case study moved after retirement. | :06:45. | :06:46.
You mentioned that kind of thing affecting you. | :06:47. | :06:50.
How dangerous is it to make a big life change in your older ydars | :06:51. | :06:54.
Lots of people know they nedd to plan their financial retirement, | :06:55. | :06:58.
but few of us consider planning for our social retirement. | :06:59. | :07:08.
Often we build up meaningful contacts, where we live, | :07:09. | :07:16.
where we work and so moving maybe to the seashde can | :07:17. | :07:18.
But we need to think how it is going to affect our relationships. | :07:19. | :07:23.
What impact does it have on both your mental and physical he`lth | :07:24. | :07:26.
It has a profound impact on our health. | :07:27. | :07:31.
We know it is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarette a day. | :07:32. | :07:34.
It is worse for your mortality than obesity. | :07:35. | :07:36.
We know loneliness has been linked with the onset of things | :07:37. | :07:39.
like dementia and cognitive decline, but also cardiovascular disease, | :07:40. | :07:41.
It affects our mental health, so people are more likely to suffer | :07:42. | :07:45.
We talk specifically about all the people but loneliness | :07:46. | :07:48.
In fact, the research shows the age groups, those at risk | :07:49. | :07:58.
of loneliness, are those in their late teens and early 20s and then | :07:59. | :08:01.
again over the age of 65, peaking when we are about 80, 90 ye`rs old. | :08:02. | :08:08.
But also there are groups between that. | :08:09. | :08:09.
Young mothers, new mothers, are particularly at risk. | :08:10. | :08:11.
Those who are unemployed or those with mental health illnesses. | :08:12. | :08:14.
And is it up to individuals to do something to help themselves, | :08:15. | :08:17.
I think we all have a broad responsibility. | :08:18. | :08:20.
We certainly can do more, volunteering for services. | :08:21. | :08:22.
Lonely people themselves, the most difficult thing is admitting you | :08:23. | :08:25.
feel lonely, because there is such a profound stigma attached to this, | :08:26. | :08:28.
At the Campaign to End Loneliness, we do think there's more local | :08:29. | :08:32.
authorities and health providers can do, for example health and | :08:33. | :08:34.
well`being boards should be looking after our health and well`bding it | :08:35. | :08:37.
should put loneliness in local strategies, to makd sure | :08:38. | :08:39.
dealing with loneliness is built on the ground level, so when we are | :08:40. | :08:42.
commissioning new things and looking at what adult social care sdrvices | :08:43. | :08:45.
we can create, loneliness is included as part of that. | :08:46. | :08:56.
The tourist industry in this region has reported | :08:57. | :08:59.
Visit East Anglia says the number of businesses with bookings | :09:00. | :09:03.
