as a wicked man, She was so young. She should have | :00:08. | :00:27.
got married and had her whole life ahead of. It is not enough, is it? | :00:28. | :00:30.
No amount of time will be enough. An apology to passengers | :00:31. | :00:32.

A life sentence for a man who murdered his former step`daughter, | :01:02. | :01:05.
A judge said Simon Meecham was a jealous and possessive man, | :01:06. | :01:10.
Leanne Meecham was stabbed to death at her home in Westcliff`on`Sea | :01:11. | :01:16.
in Essex in February, after their relationship came to an end. | :01:17. | :01:20.
At the time, Simon Meecham was already on bail for attacking her. | :01:21. | :01:24.
It's the latest in a series of murders linked to domestic abuse | :01:25. | :01:27.
In a moment, we'll hear from the county's Police Comissioner. | :01:28. | :01:30.
But first this from our Chief Reporter Kim Riley. | :01:31. | :01:37.
In mitigation today, Simon beat `` Simon Meecham's lawyers said he was | :01:38. | :01:49.
an evil man. When police were summoned to her home in every, she | :01:50. | :01:54.
was slumped on the sofa with wounds to her chest. She died a week later | :01:55. | :01:58.
from multiple organ failure and brain injuries. When he was arrested | :01:59. | :02:04.
he had self`inflicted stab wounds, at first blaming the antlers | :02:05. | :02:07.
injuries. He had pleaded guilty to common assault against and was | :02:08. | :02:11.
awaiting sentencing when he murdered her. Sentencing him, the judge said | :02:12. | :02:16.
as a result of his evilness, a loving young woman was cut down in | :02:17. | :02:21.
the prime of her life. You are a jealous and possessive man. You | :02:22. | :02:24.
could not bear to see her with anyone else. Your attitude was that | :02:25. | :02:29.
if you could not have, nobody else would. You went to the house clearly | :02:30. | :02:34.
intending to use on the arm. It was a brutal killing. You will serve a | :02:35. | :02:39.
minimum of 22 years. The defence said he is not an evil man. Would | :02:40. | :02:46.
you agree with that? Simon Meecham had a history of domestic assaults | :02:47. | :02:51.
on Leanne and clearly the offence he committed that day was intrinsically | :02:52. | :02:56.
evil and that was affected in the comments made by the judge in | :02:57. | :03:02.
sentencing. Outside court, surrounded by relatives, Leanne's | :03:03. | :03:08.
sister spoke about her. She was lovely and my best friend. She | :03:09. | :03:12.
looked after everyone. She didn't ever put herself before anyone. It | :03:13. | :03:20.
was always about other people. So you were close? She was my best | :03:21. | :03:26.
friend. The judge paid tribute to the families on both sides. A | :03:27. | :03:30.
domestic homicide review and an internal investigation are examining | :03:31. | :03:37.
Essex police's action in the weeks leading up to the murder. Improving | :03:38. | :03:41.
the way it deals with domestic violence has become a priority for | :03:42. | :03:44.
the force, after high`profile cases. So could more have been done | :03:45. | :03:52.
to prevent Leanne's murder? A question I put to the Police | :03:53. | :03:54.
and Crime Commissioner for Essex, He said investigations | :03:55. | :03:57.
into the case were underway but he pointed out that action has | :03:58. | :04:02.
been taken against Simon Meecham. Essex police, of course, | :04:03. | :04:05.
brought Simon Meecham to justice. At the time he tragically killed | :04:06. | :04:09.
Leanne, he was actually... had already been found guilty | :04:10. | :04:13.
in the court and was awaiting Essex police had caught him | :04:14. | :04:16.
for offences against Leanne, Does this raise questions about the | :04:17. | :04:27.
limitations facing the police when it comes to domestic abuse, because | :04:28. | :04:31.
often people who are found guilty of killing people have been caught | :04:32. | :04:34.
before, but it doesn't necessarily stop them going back | :04:35. | :04:39.
and hurting someone again? This is a real challenge | :04:40. | :04:43.
for the police, not just the police but for all the partner agencies who | :04:44. | :04:46.
have a role to play, whether it is criminal justice partners or | :04:47. | :04:49.
partners in social care. And in many other areas, | :04:50. | :04:55.
you have to work with it is their way | :04:56. | :04:59.
of life to abuse their partners. It averages 80 domestic abuse | :05:00. | :05:07.
incident a day in Essex, People will be shocked to hear | :05:08. | :05:13.
that there is such a problem. I was shocked when I took | :05:14. | :05:20.
on this role back in November 2012. Frankly, I didn't know anything | :05:21. | :05:25.
about this topic at all. You talk about the number | :05:26. | :05:29.
of incidents a day, but we should look at the number | :05:30. | :05:31.
of people being killed. Since I took over this role, roughly | :05:32. | :05:34.
half of all the murders in Essex Somebody in Essex is losing | :05:35. | :05:38.
their live in a domestic homicide. It may be tough for us to do | :05:39. | :05:46.
something about it but we need to What about the culture within | :05:47. | :05:53.
the police of dealing with domestic Just this week an officer has been | :05:54. | :05:57.
dismissed for misconduct, partly because of the way he dealt | :05:58. | :06:03.
with a domestic abuse case. I won't refer to that particular | :06:04. | :06:07.
case, but the culture needed to This chief constable has made it | :06:08. | :06:12.
clear to his officers that he expects them to do their best every | :06:13. | :06:18.
time they are called out to Is the chief constable | :06:19. | :06:21.
leading that change? Greater Anglia, which runs trains | :06:22. | :06:30.
through Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex into London, has issued | :06:31. | :06:37.
a lengthy apology to passengers It appeared | :06:38. | :06:41.
on its website today with This afternoon I went to | :06:42. | :06:45.
Norwich Station to speak to John, here we are waiting to | :06:46. | :06:49.
speak you on the platform. The very train you are coming in | :06:50. | :06:56.
on was late, the one behind you 13 And here you are today apologising | :06:57. | :07:00.
for trains being late It has been a significant | :07:01. | :07:05.
challenge over the summer. And other issues have surfaced, | :07:06. | :07:14.
a lot has been to do with There have been far more suicides | :07:15. | :07:17.
this year than in previous years, And on occasion there have | :07:18. | :07:22.
been train faults too. It has been a mix of factors that | :07:23. | :07:24.
has made it a difficult few weeks. I find it frustrating but | :07:25. | :07:28.
the key thing is that we are here to We are doing all we can with Network | :07:29. | :07:36.
Rail to improve the performance. A lot of issues have been to do | :07:37. | :07:44.
with the traffic signalling. So you're saying it is | :07:45. | :07:48.
down to Network Rail not getting I'm saying this is down to a mix | :07:49. | :07:51.
of things, of which infrastructure is the biggest | :07:52. | :07:55.
part but equally there are issues to deal with, trains and external | :07:56. | :07:58.
factors, such as fatalities. The issue is | :07:59. | :08:00.
for us to work together, so we jointly apologised today because it | :08:01. | :08:04.
has been a difficult period. We have a number of steps going | :08:05. | :08:06.
in to improve the performance of the infrastructure, so | :08:07. | :08:11.
Network Rail are improving response times, different maintenance regimes | :08:12. | :08:14.
for some of the key components. parts are strewn across the floor. | :08:15. | :10:02.
The TV was held by a brick. The blinds were shredded. She had glass | :10:03. | :10:08.

It is the impact which drag sheep. Bricks were hurled 20 feet across | :10:18. | :10:26.
the room. `` the impact which hits you. People in the car escaped | :10:27. | :10:30.
injury and no charges have been brought. It is the third time that | :10:31. | :10:36.
cars crashed into houses. This wall opposite has just been rebuilt. The | :10:37. | :10:40.

A second man has been arrested in connection with | :10:46. | :10:50.

She suffered burns to her face and neck and has been left with | :10:55. | :10:57.
A 25`year`old man from Lowestoft was arrested this | :10:58. | :11:00.

The attack happened yesterday morning on London Road South. | :11:03. | :11:05.

If someone offered to deliver your letters the next day, for less | :11:32. | :11:34.
than half the price of a first class stamp, would you be tempted? | :11:35. | :11:37.
If you are, then you wouldn't be alone because that's what's | :11:38. | :11:39.
Brian Webb, who runs a newspaper delivery business, spotted a gap | :11:40. | :11:43.
in the market and started postal deliveries in the spring. | :11:44. | :11:46.
He covers 20 villages around Wisbech and already he's delivering 1,000 | :11:47. | :11:50.
He collects the mail, sorts the mail, delivers it. | :11:51. | :12:00.
This is Brian Webb, newsagent and now private postman. | :12:01. | :12:07.
A new career all because of the cost of a stamp. | :12:08. | :12:11.
I was collecting the money and my customer said to me, | :12:12. | :12:19.
what ever would your mum say, paying money for posting a letter. | :12:20. | :12:22.
She said, it goes up next week to 62p. | :12:23. | :12:35.

Among them, businesses like Linda Pepper's hairdressers. | :12:45. | :12:47.
Moving away from Royal Mail is quite a big jump, isn't it? | :12:48. | :12:50.
It is, but at 30p it is a jump worth taking for our local mail. | :12:51. | :12:58.
Customers buy the sheets for ?3 each. | :12:59. | :13:01.
When they use a stamp they are marked just like the Royal Mail. | :13:02. | :13:07.
Stamped, Webb's Postal Service, it is delivered the next day. | :13:08. | :13:12.
They told us that if a local delivery company can guarantee the | :13:13. | :13:17.
same level of service under the same requirements, we wish them well. | :13:18. | :13:22.
And when it comes to deliveries, there are bigger fish to worry about | :13:23. | :13:25.
I don't believe Brian himself is a threat, but what he's doing could | :13:26. | :13:32.
be on a larger scale with some of the bigger companies. | :13:33. | :13:37.
He can't compete when people move to the southern | :13:38. | :13:39.
hemisphere, but business closer to home, he says, is booming. | :13:40. | :13:44.
It has just gone from doctors to solicitors, | :13:45. | :13:48.

People in Frinton on the Essex coast are very proud | :14:03. | :14:19.
It's very neat, very tidy and very traditional. | :14:20. | :14:23.
And over the years, they've fought a lot of battles to | :14:24. | :14:25.
They've opposed bookmakers, ice cream parlours and pubs. | :14:26. | :14:29.
But now they're taking on the supermarket giant Sainsbury's, and | :14:30. | :14:31.
This is a town which stands defiantly behind it's white gates, | :14:32. | :14:39.
determined to keep the traditional feel to its high street. | :14:40. | :14:42.
Anything that causes a problem comes under close scrutiny. | :14:43. | :14:47.
Frinton isn't a place that likes change. | :14:48. | :14:49.
The pub, the fish and chip shop, even the railway gates caused | :14:50. | :14:54.
controversy when they were replaced with automatic ones. | :14:55. | :14:57.
Now the town council has asked Sainsbury's to reconsider | :14:58. | :15:00.
its plans for a new store, saying it's signs are too orange. | :15:01. | :15:06.
What we don't want to see is this great orange mass at the front. | :15:07. | :15:10.
I think people will know that Sainsbury's is there, | :15:11. | :15:14.
and I'm sure they will use it, and I don't think you need to paint | :15:15. | :15:18.
You could perhaps do something that was more in keeping with the area. | :15:19. | :15:22.
It is the latest in a list of battles. | :15:23. | :15:24.
The man who sold ice cream on the seafront was stopped, | :15:25. | :15:27.
the town resisted having a pub until 2000 and when | :15:28. | :15:30.
the much disputed fish and chip shop first opened, it had to be nice. | :15:31. | :15:37.
The council says it welcomes the supermarket but abides | :15:38. | :15:40.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said some concern was raised about | :15:41. | :15:52.
the signage, but they are always careful to ensure that their stores | :15:53. | :15:55.
are in keeping with the local areas and they will consider any comments | :15:56. | :15:58.
made from Frinton residents as they take their plans forward. | :15:59. | :16:00.
I don't think it matters, to be honest. | :16:01. | :16:03.
Sainsbury's is Sainsbury's at the end of the day. | :16:04. | :16:12.
But councillors asked Sainsbury's if it will consider reverting to | :16:13. | :16:17.
its original black and gold signage, which it considers to be | :16:18. | :16:20.
Sport now, and the golden couple of the Commonwealth Games, Chris and | :16:21. | :16:30.
Gabby Adcock, have told Look East they're now hoping for more success | :16:31. | :16:34.

Two weeks ago at the Commonwealth Games their dedication | :16:58. | :17:00.
Without sounding too cliched, it is a dream come true. | :17:01. | :17:08.
You dream about being on top of that podium and with all | :17:09. | :17:11.
Do you always wander around wearing your medals? | :17:12. | :17:19.
Yes, we like to look at them now and again and get them out | :17:20. | :17:22.
of the box, but we are really proud of what we have done and happy we | :17:23. | :17:26.

They were the outstanding couple at the Commonwealth, winning | :17:41. | :17:43.

You're married to each other, do you get bored of each other? | :17:50. | :17:56.
We are very used to it since we were 16. | :17:57. | :18:03.
We used to live at the lodge together | :18:04. | :18:06.
It is really important the partnership, especially as you work | :18:07. | :18:16.
together and you both have imput, because that is how you progress. | :18:17. | :18:19.
We are very lucky to do what we love together and | :18:20. | :18:22.
when we achieve something it makes it all that more special. | :18:23. | :18:25.
I think it is same at home, because at work we are so much | :18:26. | :18:30.
It transfers into our home life quite well. | :18:31. | :18:37.
Commonwealth celebrations have been put on hold | :18:38. | :18:40.
but with the holiday booked and a first wedding anniversary to come, | :18:41. | :18:44.
they should buy some quality time together off the court, particularly | :18:45. | :18:47.
I love that bit where their hated it. If it was that easy, I would do | :18:48. | :19:12.
In athletics, some of the region's athletes have | :19:13. | :19:16.
got their sights on medals at the European Championships in Zurich. | :19:17. | :19:19.
Will Sharman from Corby won Silver last night in the hurdles, | :19:20. | :19:21.
and this evening there could be more glory in the track and field. | :19:22. | :19:25.
Until this year his biggest hurdle has been injury and inconsistency, | :19:26. | :19:29.
but last night all that stood between Will Sharman and a gold | :19:30. | :19:33.
medal with ten potential stumbling blocks. He was out faster than the | :19:34. | :19:38.
human eye, but human frailty kicked in and he clattered the gates, lost | :19:39. | :19:42.
his stride and lost his golden opportunity, silver for him. Mixed | :19:43. | :19:48.
emotions because I knew I was in the lead. I studied my opposition. I | :19:49. | :19:56.
know what I am strongest. I didn't expect to be in the lead in the | :19:57. | :20:00.
middle section, but I dominated it. That is why I was gutted, because I | :20:01. | :20:08.
could have done more. In the javelin, either through 70 metres, | :20:09. | :20:16.

eighth. On the track tonight, Jill Williams runs in the final of the | :20:27. | :20:31.
tour in metres. As a junior, she was fated to be a major force, while | :20:32. | :20:35.
some night it is her chance to win their first grown`up championship. | :20:36. | :20:39.
If her semifinal stroll over is anything to go by, she has nothing | :20:40. | :20:46.
to fear. I just did as much as I needed to do. I can as much energy | :20:47. | :20:54.
as I could. I want to win just as much as anyone else. Also denied is | :20:55. | :21:02.

of them. And of course there's a full | :21:11. | :21:14.
programme of football this weekend. There are previews | :21:15. | :21:17.
of all the games on the BBC Sport website and coverage of every game | :21:18. | :21:20.

Irritating. Scary and squashing. This is the size of a small town. | :22:16. | :22:19.
They have pretty much everything here to keep ten to 18`year`olds | :22:20. | :22:25.
entertained and cared for. Even on a daily newspaper, a hospital and | :22:26. | :22:31.
their own radio station. Good morning. What do you think Norjam? | :22:32. | :22:39.
It is a real chance to do something great. It is a good opportunity to | :22:40. | :22:47.
do something new, so I decided I would go for it. It is hard to | :22:48. | :22:55.
resist getting stuck in. Hello, I am Jenny. It is the last afternoon here | :22:56. | :23:01.
at Norjam and excitement is building. Watch and learn, watch and | :23:02. | :23:11.
learn. The bottle was spotted by E`coli fans. Moving on. As well as | :23:12. | :23:17.
barrel loads of fun and a week away from home, there is a deeper message | :23:18. | :23:22.
to all of this. The highlight is that we have Arabs sitting next to | :23:23. | :23:29.
Jewish people. It is world peace here in Norfolk. Maybe we should | :23:30. | :23:39.
have a few scouts helping out the United Nations. The gill scouts | :23:40. | :23:55.
agreed. We have made new friends `` girl. It is all a long way off from | :23:56. | :24:06.
campfires. Archery. Everything has been fun. Even the weather? Not | :24:07. | :24:17.
ready. It finishes tonight. Plan the next ten to `` girl begins next | :24:18. | :24:34.
week. They will be glad it is finishing tonight, because the | :24:35. | :24:38.
weather is getting cooler. What a great thing to do. The weather has | :24:39. | :24:43.
been on and off. great thing to do. The weather has | :24:44. | :24:48.
been on and off. We have seen some decent spells of sunshine today. We | :24:49. | :24:54.
have some fine traditions, but some areas of cloud and it has felt | :24:55. | :25:00.
cooler through the day. This is our satellite image for the last few | :25:01. | :25:05.
hours. The eastern half is doing well sunshine, but we should see | :25:06. | :25:09.
some sunny spells at the end of the day. There is a risk of one or two | :25:10. | :25:12.
showers, certainly for this evening. After we get to about | :25:13. | :25:20.
midnight and beyond, it should be largely dry with some clear spells | :25:21. | :25:24.
developing. Quite cool temperatures for tonight. These are our towns and | :25:25. | :25:29.
cities. Out in the countryside it could get down to single figures in | :25:30. | :25:32.
one or two spots. The wind coming from the west. So, we start tomorrow | :25:33. | :25:40.
with good sunshine. It will tend to turn cloudy into the afternoon. | :25:41. | :25:44.
There is a chance of an isolated shower. Those places at risk are | :25:45. | :25:51.
those North Eastern corners. A brisk breeze coming from the west. | :25:52. | :25:56.
Temperatures anywhere between 19 and 20 degrees, so they stayed quiet on | :25:57. | :26:00.
the cooler side. Where the cloud is, there should be some decent breaks | :26:01. | :26:04.
to allow for sunshine. It is not a bad start to our weekend. Then it | :26:05. | :26:09.
changes somewhat for Sunday, because this is our pressure pattern. We | :26:10. | :26:19.
have a week pressure pattern come in. It looks like a windy forecast | :26:20. | :26:23.
for Sunday, and that could be some gusts of up to 40 mph. Quite a windy | :26:24. | :26:29.
forecasts. Let's summarise our weekend. Largely dry, but there | :26:30. | :26:34.
could be some spot of rain, and some sunny spells around for tomorrow | :26:35. | :26:39.
morning, but it will be quite windy through Sunday. Let's go back over | :26:40. | :26:44.
Saturday as it is the best of the two days. A bit more cloud to stop | :26:45. | :26:48.
the day on Sunday but it will brighten up, perhaps some spots of | :26:49. | :26:55.
rain. We started Monday with some showers, but look at our | :26:56. | :26:59.
temperatures, they're going down. A lot more cloud, highs of 16 degrees | :27:00. | :27:03.
and overnight temperatures into single figures. Summer is still | :27:04. | :27:09.
here. Clinging on, we are. Have a great weekend. | :27:10. | :27:14. |
