Welcome to look east. Tonight, the news teams where you are. | :00:07. | :00:09.
Welcome to look east. Tonight, the growing number of amputations linked | :00:10. | :00:13.
to diabetes in Essex. Southdnd now has one of the highest rate in the | :00:14. | :00:18.
country. An inquest has told a climber who died on the highest | :00:19. | :00:22.
mountain in Vietnam sent a series of urgent messages to his girlfriend | :00:23. | :00:27.
shortly before he died. We speak to the former manager of MK Dons, Carl | :00:28. | :00:32.
Robinson. He left the club this weekend after six years in charge. | :00:33. | :00:42.
And as the nights draw in, the trees draw in the crowd. | :00:43. | :00:49.
First tonight the health epidemic that's threatening | :00:50. | :00:53.
The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is on the risd | :00:54. | :00:59.
and with it comes the risk of kidney failure, blindness and amputations. | :01:00. | :01:04.
A BBC investigation shows the area around Southend which includes | :01:05. | :01:08.
Westcliff and Shoeburyness has one of the highest rates of ampttations | :01:09. | :01:12.
In those areas, for every 1,000 people with the condition, | :01:13. | :01:19.
4.9 people have some form of amputation. | :01:20. | :01:23.
And it has gone up by nearlx a quarter in the last four xears. | :01:24. | :01:29.
Iain Wells from Essex has type 1 diabetes. | :01:30. | :01:39.
It's genetic so he can't do anything about it. | :01:40. | :01:42.
He has to check his blood stgar levels with a pen 6 times a day | :01:43. | :01:45.
He didn't realise how seriots it was and his toe was amputated. | :01:46. | :01:58.
The doctor said I could havd done anything. Now has to be verx careful | :01:59. | :02:09.
when I put my shoes on. You don t forget it. | :02:10. | :02:12.
The place with one of the hhghest rates of amputation | :02:13. | :02:16.
The local health board, the CCG, didn't have | :02:17. | :02:24.
One expert in Norfolk says the key is egular foot | :02:25. | :02:38.
checks to prevent things from getting worse. | :02:39. | :02:42.
If you get an infection in ` wound, that can take hold. If you have high | :02:43. | :02:49.
blood sugar is, your infecthon fighting cells don't work vdry well. | :02:50. | :02:56.
This new map shows prescriptions for type 2 diabetes are also | :02:57. | :03:01.
above-average. Particularly in places like Tendring. Living along | :03:02. | :03:05.
the coast, another place whdre rates are high is North Norfolk. Lastly, | :03:06. | :03:13.
parts of Fenland near the Cambridgeshire order. Type 0 | :03:14. | :03:21.
diabetes is genetic, but type II is preventable. Please thank the | :03:22. | :03:23.
volunteers. In Norfolk those at risk | :03:24. | :03:25.
and with type 2 are referred to exercise programmes, | :03:26. | :03:32.
like this 5K park run. 82 year old Jack thompson | :03:33. | :03:34.
was diagnosed 2 years ago. The exercise helps to bring | :03:35. | :03:36.
down his glucose levels. When I finished one meal, and ready | :03:37. | :03:46.
for the next. Which doesn't help. I have to analyse how much sugar there | :03:47. | :03:52.
is in every drink. Basicallx, if you're careful, all things hn | :03:53. | :03:55.
moderation. the number of people with dhabetes | :03:56. | :04:00.
has increased fifty per cent Consultants say it's a major | :04:01. | :04:04.
public health problem Late this afternoon | :04:05. | :04:07.
I asked her about the link Obesity is a serious risk f`ctor in | :04:08. | :04:27.
type 2 diabetes. Once you are over 40, or over 25 for black Ashan | :04:28. | :04:33.
minority populations, that hncreases your risk. The higher your BMI and | :04:34. | :04:41.
your waist measurement, that will also increase your risk. For | :04:42. | :04:46.
example, losing 10% of your body weight will reduce your risk of | :04:47. | :04:53.
developing type 2 diabetes by approximately 54%. So it is linked | :04:54. | :04:57.
absolutely. And you can acttally control it by reducing the Simpsons | :04:58. | :05:06.
by eating properly? Absolutdly. One of the things people with dhabetes | :05:07. | :05:11.
need to look at, as we all should, is healthy choices and a | :05:12. | :05:20.
well-balanced diet. And exercise. Weather you live with diabetes are | :05:21. | :05:27.
not, and if you are currently overweight, by reducing that weight, | :05:28. | :05:33.
you could greatly reduce yotr risk. Do you think a lot of peopld are | :05:34. | :05:36.
unaware that if you don't look after themselves they could lose ` leg or | :05:37. | :05:42.
foot in future because of dhabetes? Yes, I do. I think sometimes people | :05:43. | :05:48.
don't know the seriousness of the condition. Just generally in the | :05:49. | :05:53.
general population. And then sometimes when people are dhagnosed, | :05:54. | :05:57.
they won't necessarily taken all the information they are given only may | :05:58. | :06:01.
not be given the information of the potential complications. And | :06:02. | :06:04.
therefore not realise how sdrious it is. So good self-management is | :06:05. | :06:10.
really key. You see people can walk about with some types of di`betes | :06:11. | :06:13.
for ten years without knowing it, what would be the symptoms they are | :06:14. | :06:25.
ignoring? Type II we are talking about. So you could be things like | :06:26. | :06:29.
feeling more tired, may be feeling a little bit more thirsty, slow | :06:30. | :06:31.
healing wounds, you may be going to the toilet more often at night. | :06:32. | :06:36.
Sometimes people may have ftll symptoms and they might be putting | :06:37. | :06:39.
them down to things like getting older or work is very hectic and not | :06:40. | :06:44.
necessarily matching them altogether. Thank you very luch You | :06:45. | :06:50.
are very welcome. On Inside Out tonight, | :06:51. | :06:53.
research in Cambridge investigating what happens in the brain | :06:54. | :06:55.
when we eat fatty foods. That's tonight at | :06:56. | :06:57.
7:30pm on BBC One. An inquest has been told th`t | :06:58. | :06:59.
a climber who died on the hhghest mountain in Vietnam sent a series | :07:00. | :07:02.
of urgent messages to his ghrlfriend Aiden Webb was found | :07:03. | :07:05.
at the bottom of a deep ravhne One message said he was lost | :07:06. | :07:08.
after a landslide blocked hhs way. 22 year old Aiden Webb | :07:09. | :07:13.
from Attleborough in Norfolk was an adventurer on | :07:14. | :07:16.
a trip of a lifetime. in Vietnam with his | :07:17. | :07:18.
girlfriend Bluebell Baughan, As these pictures show, | :07:19. | :07:21.
the Anglia Ruskin universitx student He decided he'd set | :07:22. | :07:28.
out alone to tackle the country's hghest peak | :07:29. | :07:34.
Fransipan mountain. in a day, but things | :07:35. | :07:38.
started to go wrong. He told his girlfriend the trail was | :07:39. | :07:57.
blocked by a landslide. He got lost. One of the messages said he was very | :07:58. | :08:03.
cold. I can't stop shivering. Vietnamese authorities say his body | :08:04. | :08:08.
was found in a stream in a ravine. They believe you drown whild | :08:09. | :08:10.
unconscious following a foul. Back home in Norfolk thousands | :08:11. | :08:14.
of pounds had been raised to fund parents thankied all who had helped | :08:15. | :08:18.
with the search and rescue. They said their son | :08:19. | :08:33.
was a joy to be around. Area coroner Yvonne Blake expressed | :08:34. | :08:35.
condolences to Aiden's family As the medical cause | :08:36. | :08:39.
of death remained officiallx unascertained.she recorded | :08:40. | :08:42.
an open conclusion. The latest stretch of | :08:43. | :08:44.
the England Coast Path It is 21 miles long it runs | :08:45. | :08:46.
from Sea Palling to Hopton on Sea and includes three miles | :08:47. | :08:50.
of new footpath. There is also a new right | :08:51. | :08:52.
of access to land between Finally, bit by bit, | :08:53. | :08:54.
it is becoming reality. For Russell Wilson and his team | :08:55. | :09:00.
it has taken months of hard work hacking | :09:01. | :09:13.
through undergrowth and woodland. There are new bridges, signs, | :09:14. | :09:23.
boardwalks, a huge amount of clearance. This coastal accdss was | :09:24. | :09:26.
never there before. When finished the entire England | :09:27. | :09:31.
coast path will be 2700 milds long. At Horsey Gap, it means the public | :09:32. | :09:36.
now have legal right of accdss across the Dunes owned | :09:37. | :09:39.
by the National Trust. We have always had de facto public | :09:40. | :09:47.
access for many years. This represents an opportunity for the | :09:48. | :09:51.
local economy. More visitors to the coast and more opportunity to move | :09:52. | :09:57.
visitors from the coast back inland as well. This is a new thred-mile | :09:58. | :10:03.
stretch of the path. I am now legally allowed to walk along here. | :10:04. | :10:10.
I am also allowed spreading room. I am legally allowed to head tp these | :10:11. | :10:18.
banks towards the sea. I wotldn t be breaking the law. The country land | :10:19. | :10:22.
and business Association saxs there are all sorts of implications for | :10:23. | :10:32.
wildlife conservation. I thhnk it is important that people who enjoy the | :10:33. | :10:37.
path is respect them and thd interests of the owners alongside | :10:38. | :10:40.
the paths. That is part of what I would call the way in which we need | :10:41. | :10:44.
to encourage people to come and enjoy and behave properly and | :10:45. | :10:47.
respect the coastline. Walkers can now explore | :10:48. | :10:51.
an uninterrupted route between Weybourne in North | :10:52. | :10:56.
to Hopton-on-Sea in the south. The plan is that by 2020 thd entire | :10:57. | :11:00.
England coast path will More than 100 MPs want Barack Obama | :11:01. | :11:03.
to block the extradition of a Suffolk man accused of hacking | :11:04. | :11:07.
into computers in America. A judge here has ruled that | :11:08. | :11:09.
Lauri Love can be sent But MPs say they're worried | :11:10. | :11:12.
for his safety and want The case for the extradition | :11:13. | :11:16.
of Lauri Love is, for now, still embroiled in the complexities | :11:17. | :11:19.
of the legal system here. And that, say MPs, | :11:20. | :11:25.
is where it should stay. Urging Barack Obama to withdraw | :11:26. | :11:27.
an order for extradition and allow the courts on this side | :11:28. | :11:34.
of the Atlantic to decide Lauri Love is on the autism | :11:35. | :11:45.
spectrum. If he has done solething wrong in terms of computer hacking, | :11:46. | :11:50.
he is willing to face chargds. But in this country has health needs can | :11:51. | :11:53.
be fully looked after. of the US Federal Reserve, | :11:54. | :11:58.
the Army and NASA in 2013. What's described as digital | :11:59. | :12:08.
civil disobedience. Last month a judge in London ruled | :12:09. | :12:09.
that the extradition was justified. But the MPs in a letter | :12:10. | :12:12.
to the president say... He says his life is over and he | :12:13. | :12:31.
can't take it any more. Ambdr Rudd can either approve or deny the | :12:32. | :12:37.
application. The decision ndeds to be made by the end of next lonth. | :12:38. | :12:53.
If she does accept it, Lauri Love's legal team | :12:54. | :12:56.
can ask for permission to appeal to the High Court. | :12:57. | :12:58.
That appeal process alone could say experts, take another ydar. | :12:59. | :13:00.
The new chief executive of the Theatre Royal | :13:01. | :13:02.
in Norwich has told Look East, his priority is to attract | :13:03. | :13:05.
It's one of the region's biggest and most important arts ventes. | :13:06. | :13:08.
Stephen Crocker is taking over from Peter Wilson in Januarx | :13:09. | :13:11.
but he's already mapping out its future. | :13:12. | :13:13.
He wants to strengthen the theatre's links with the community. | :13:14. | :13:15.
He is leaving his post at the Lowry in Manchester which he's held | :13:16. | :13:18.
And you can see my full interview on the Look East | :13:19. | :13:22.
Still to come, Julie will bd here with the weather. And we spdak to | :13:23. | :13:27.
the former manager at MK Dons, Carl Robinson, who has left the club | :13:28. | :13:28.
after six years in charge. The autumn statement is just over | :13:29. | :13:35.
a month away and we are expdcting the Chancellor to set aside millions | :13:36. | :13:38.
of pounds to improve The big question for us is `ny of it | :13:39. | :13:40.
likely to come our way? We have already seen | :13:41. | :13:45.
the dualling of the A11, improvements to the A14 and just | :13:46. | :13:47.
last week the new rail franchise for Greater Anglia started | :13:48. | :13:50.
with the promise of But there is still much mord | :13:51. | :13:52.
on the wish list, as our This is something which thotsands of | :13:53. | :14:01.
motorists will be familiar with Rush hour outside Milton Kexnes | :14:02. | :14:06.
Stop start traffic on the M0, the feeder roads almost at a st`ndstill. | :14:07. | :14:11.
So this could have been a vdry important visit. Members of the | :14:12. | :14:14.
National infrastructure comlittee are touring the country, deciding | :14:15. | :14:19.
her money needs to be spent. In Milton Keynes, they were left in no | :14:20. | :14:24.
doubt about the need for investment. This is the fastest growing region | :14:25. | :14:34.
in the country, for goodness sake. We need infrastructure to rdspond to | :14:35. | :14:38.
the number of houses and jobs being created. There is only one | :14:39. | :14:44.
carriageway in each direction on this road. At Ely station, the | :14:45. | :14:48.
trains are crowded because tntil the junction is improved they c`nnot any | :14:49. | :14:55.
more trains here. We need to see investment comes through to keep up | :14:56. | :15:02.
with growth. Next month, thd Chancellor is expected to sdt aside | :15:03. | :15:06.
millions of pounds for a ro`d and rail improvements. MPs and business | :15:07. | :15:11.
leaders from our region are keen to ensure that a lot of that comes our | :15:12. | :15:20.
way. Top of the wish list is the complete dualling of the a 47 in | :15:21. | :15:28.
Cambridgeshire. Completing the east-west rail link is now seen as a | :15:29. | :15:33.
priority, as is the upgrade of Ely junction and the line through Essex | :15:34. | :15:38.
into London. We have made a compelling case of the last few | :15:39. | :15:45.
years for investment in the east for roads and railways. But it hs only a | :15:46. | :15:50.
start and we have to finish. The last Chancellor was a frequdnt | :15:51. | :15:53.
visitor to the region and understood the need for better infrastructure. | :15:54. | :15:56.
What I understand his successor feels the needs of the East are now | :15:57. | :16:03.
greater than anywhere else. At the moment, behind-the-scenes, there is | :16:04. | :16:10.
a lot of lobbying taking pl`ce. Next month's Autumn Statement cotld have | :16:11. | :16:13.
a big impact on the developlent of a rural region. -- of our reghon. | :16:14. | :16:21.
And if you missed the Sundax Politics this weekend, | :16:22. | :16:24.
The family of a woman from Dssex who died while pregnant are setting | :16:25. | :16:28.
up a charity to raise awareness of vascular disease. | :16:29. | :16:31.
Zoe Rimmington a care worker from Clacton was eight months | :16:32. | :16:33.
pregnant when she collapsed and died in December. | :16:34. | :16:35.
Now her family want to highlight the dangers of aneurysms. | :16:36. | :16:45.
Zoe Rimmington's family remdmber the surprise baby shower they hdld for. | :16:46. | :16:53.
They still can't believe shd has gone. When she came in the room she | :16:54. | :17:01.
had an amazing personality. That is really... Everybody loved hdr, | :17:02. | :17:05.
everybody she knew and workdd with, no one had a bad word to sax about | :17:06. | :17:14.
her. She was eight months pregnant with her second child when `n | :17:15. | :17:20.
aneurysm suddenly ruptured. Within 30 minutes of it happening, she had | :17:21. | :17:28.
passed away. And the baby also passed away as well. He put up a | :17:29. | :17:34.
fight for a few hours. It h`s been very difficult. I miss her so much | :17:35. | :17:42.
everyday. I cry every day. She was my daughter and my friend. @neurysms | :17:43. | :17:50.
are an abnormal swelling or bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. They can | :17:51. | :17:54.
be fatal if they rupture. Most people are unaware if the even have | :17:55. | :18:03.
one. Now the family have made this video which they hope will lark the | :18:04. | :18:07.
launch of a charity to raisd awareness of aneurysms and to | :18:08. | :18:12.
encourage people at risk to get themselves checks. We are trying to | :18:13. | :18:16.
turn it into something positive by trying to save someone else's life. | :18:17. | :18:23.
We are starting a charity and are supporting another charity, the only | :18:24. | :18:29.
UK charities that carry out research into aneurysms. Nearly ?1000 has | :18:30. | :18:37.
been raised in her name alrdady Her family hope that is just thd start. | :18:38. | :18:42.
They have suffered at terrible tragedy and they want to stop it | :18:43. | :18:43.
happening to another family. Manager Karl Robinson has ldft MK | :18:44. | :18:53.
Dons by mutual consent. It comes after the club's 3,0 home | :18:54. | :18:55.
defeat this weekend by Southend The club are now just two places | :18:56. | :18:58.
above the relegation He has been in charge at St`dium MK | :18:59. | :19:00.
since 2010 and until today was the third longest serving | :19:01. | :19:04.
manager in league football. Our Sport's Editor is | :19:05. | :19:07.
outside the ground now. Good evening. Manages come `nd go | :19:08. | :19:21.
from football clubs, but thd departure of Karl Robinson from MK | :19:22. | :19:23.
Dons is a little different because he's been here six years. N`p time, | :19:24. | :19:30.
some of our other clubs havd changed the manager to or three timds. They | :19:31. | :19:43.
are looking at relegation zone, so yesterday he was asked to clear his | :19:44. | :19:48.
desk. Today, I caught up with them on the golf course. Today, Karl | :19:49. | :19:54.
Robinson was trying to switch off at the end of a six-year relathonship | :19:55. | :20:07.
is with MK Dons. This is escapism. It is getting away from somd of the | :20:08. | :20:12.
things you don't want to re`d or hear. I have been there for so long | :20:13. | :20:18.
and it has been a massive p`rt of my life. To be sat in the housd would | :20:19. | :20:22.
be a lot more difficult than getting out in the fresh air. The boss has | :20:23. | :20:35.
said it was time for me to go. Without him, I wouldn't havd had | :20:36. | :20:39.
those memories. I can't stand here and point fingers. It is not for me | :20:40. | :20:46.
to see weather I should havd been given more time. I still believe. I | :20:47. | :20:51.
think the team is more than capable of getting in the play-offs, still. | :20:52. | :20:59.
He guided them to promotion in the championship last year. That was | :21:00. | :21:03.
quickly followed by relegathon in May and an alarming slide down the | :21:04. | :21:10.
League 1 table this season. They have gone 13 home games without a | :21:11. | :21:16.
win. The chairman reluctantly took action. I am not going to s`y | :21:17. | :21:25.
anything today. He will be `ngry and I will be angry. Will there be | :21:26. | :21:33.
conflict, 100%. But the football club is the important thing. Once | :21:34. | :21:37.
everything is all stone, I `m sure I will look back on it very fondly. If | :21:38. | :21:43.
it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be stood in front of you today. For all | :21:44. | :21:48.
the reasons I'm not there, H can also thank him for the reasons I was | :21:49. | :21:55.
there. He will be remembered as the first manager for MK Dons who | :21:56. | :22:00.
understood them. Milton Keynes is different to everyone else. He got | :22:01. | :22:04.
the club, he got the people of Milton Keynes and he put evdrything | :22:05. | :22:09.
into it. His heart and soul. He wore his heart on his sleeve. Whhle they | :22:10. | :22:15.
look for the first manager hn six years, Karl Robinson will now weigh | :22:16. | :22:20.
up his options. But it won't be long, surely, before this | :22:21. | :22:26.
36-year-old is back in the dugout. The assistant manager will take | :22:27. | :22:31.
charge for the next game. Steve Evans is bookmakers favourite for | :22:32. | :22:36.
the full-time position. I understand the fans would not be very happy | :22:37. | :22:38.
with that appointment. At Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire | :22:39. | :22:41.
you can go on a tree tour. The estate has thousands of trees | :22:42. | :22:49.
and at this time of year yot can enjoy nearly every shade | :22:50. | :22:52.
of green and brown. It's the season when the sun sits | :22:53. | :22:54.
lower the hour goes back and when trees go gold, yellow, red | :22:55. | :23:07.
and orange. Autumn at Anglesey Abbey - | :23:08. | :23:19.
in full blaze. the Head gardener | :23:20. | :23:22.
taking us on a tour. I love the colours. Line, ash, | :23:23. | :23:39.
tulips. It goes on and on. Six weeks of beautiful colours. | :23:40. | :23:42.
There's just something about autumn leaves. | :23:43. | :23:49.
They are different colours. Pink, purple, green, red. Allsorts. We | :23:50. | :24:02.
love Tom! It is good fun throwing leaves around. The colours this year | :24:03. | :24:09.
are stunning. Gold, red, yellow The kids love running around in the | :24:10. | :24:11.
leaves. Colours only seen when | :24:12. | :24:19.
temperatures cool and green This is my favourite tree. Xou have | :24:20. | :24:36.
to look at it. It has almost every colour developing. Green, ydllow, | :24:37. | :24:46.
orange, pink, red, purple. Lovely layers. Fantastic. You get ht all in | :24:47. | :24:51.
one. A time of year to walk throtgh trees | :24:52. | :24:54.
immerse yourself in autumn. Temp adjusted nicely today. 14 | :24:55. | :25:12.
degrees. Average for the tile of years. There was blue sky. For most | :25:13. | :25:19.
of us, the afternoon started off cloudy. Over the last few hours the | :25:20. | :25:25.
cloud has been breaking up. Also some showers. The start to push on | :25:26. | :25:30.
from the south-west. This blog will move eastwards overnight. Most of | :25:31. | :25:33.
this will be light and patchy. The further north you are, the lore | :25:34. | :25:40.
likely you are to stay dry. Patchy mist developing and lows of about 5 | :25:41. | :25:44.
degrees. Generally, temperatures between about six and 10 degrees. | :25:45. | :25:51.
Tomorrow, this is high pressure extending down from the North. For | :25:52. | :25:55.
us, some showers around first-time full block -- first thing. Brewery | :25:56. | :26:05.
keep the thicker cloud, somd sunny intervals developing. Temperatures | :26:06. | :26:11.
similar to today's values. Eventually, the light winds towards | :26:12. | :26:16.
the end of the day will become more south-easterly indirection. Tomorrow | :26:17. | :26:21.
night, the mist will reform. On Wednesday, this front pushes from | :26:22. | :26:25.
the West, bringing wet weather to northern and western parts of the | :26:26. | :26:29.
country. Some mist first thhng and then it should be dry. The computer | :26:30. | :26:34.
is overdoing the cloud for Wednesday. A good chance | :26:35. | :26:38.
temperatures will be higher than this. Milder on Wednesday bdcause | :26:39. | :26:42.
the wind will become more wdst or south westerly. Weapons thex will | :26:43. | :26:51.
again be dry with decent sunny spells. These temperatures lay be a | :26:52. | :26:56.
little pessimistic. We could see 16 Celsius. The prospect of sole really | :26:57. | :27:03.
decent spells of October sunshine. This quiet spell of weather is set | :27:04. | :27:07.
to continue into the weekend. High-pressure dominant, rem`ining | :27:08. | :27:12.
dry, and we should enjoy sole further spells of sunny auttmnal | :27:13. | :27:21.
weather. I think I will leave my shots in the cupboard. Goodbye. | :27:22. | :27:26. |
