Hello and welcome to the Look East late news.

:00:00.:00:00.

The growing number of amput`tions linked to diabetes.

:00:00.:00:00.

Southend now has one of the highest rates in the country.

:00:00.:00:08.

The new boss of the Theatre Royal in Norwich tells me how

:00:09.:00:11.

he plans to attract new and younger audiences.

:00:12.:00:13.

And there is some milder weather on the way.

:00:14.:00:15.

All the details in your fordcast for the week ahead.

:00:16.:00:36.

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes is on the risd

:00:37.:00:40.

and with it comes the risk of kidney failure, blindness and amputations.

:00:41.:00:43.

A BBC investigation shows the area around Southend has one

:00:44.:00:45.

of the highest rates of ampttations for diabetics in the UK.

:00:46.:00:47.

It stands at 4.9 that's almost double the national average

:00:48.:00:52.

of 2.6 and a rise of 23% in the past four years.

:00:53.:00:55.

Our Health reporter Nikki Fox has been investigating.

:00:56.:01:04.

Iain Wells from Essex has type 1 diabetes.

:01:05.:01:09.

It's genetic so he can only manage it.

:01:10.:01:11.

He has to check his blood stgar levels with a pen six times a day.

:01:12.:01:15.

Three years ago he scratched his toe.

:01:16.:01:17.

He didn't realise how seriots it was and his toe was amputated.

:01:18.:01:28.

You could have stubbed the toe in your shoe or anything.

:01:29.:01:35.

I have to be very, very cardful now when I put my shoes on.

:01:36.:01:38.

The place with one of the hhghest rates of amputation,

:01:39.:01:42.

The local health board, the CCG didn't have anyone to talk to us.

:01:43.:01:46.

One expert in Norfolk says the key is regular foot checks.

:01:47.:01:59.

What happens is that you end up not being able to feel your feet very

:02:00.:02:07.

well so if you have a stone in your shoe or you develop a blistdr

:02:08.:02:10.

you bought a new pair of shoes, you don't feel it.

:02:11.:02:13.

If you get an infection in that wound then that can take hold

:02:14.:02:16.

because if you have high blood sugars, your infection fighting

:02:17.:02:18.

Amputations can occur in people with type one and type 2 di`betes.

:02:19.:02:27.

From this map we can see pl`ces other than Southend have a problem.

:02:28.:02:30.

The red areas showing the hhgher number of prescriptions

:02:31.:02:32.

Deprivation may lead to bad diet or screening maybe better

:02:33.:02:39.

The number of people with dhabetes has increased by 50%

:02:40.:02:43.

Consultants say it is a major public health problem where

:02:44.:02:47.

An inquest has been told th`t a climber who died on the hhghest

:02:48.:03:01.

mountain in Vietnam sent a series of urgent messages to his ghrlfriend

:03:02.:03:04.

Aiden Webb was found at the bottom of a deep ravhne

:03:05.:03:11.

22-year-old Aiden Webb from Attleborough in Norfolk

:03:12.:03:18.

was an adventurer on a trip of a lifetime.

:03:19.:03:21.

He was travelling in Vietnal with his girlfriend Bluebell Baughan

:03:22.:03:24.

As these pictures show, the Anglia Ruskin Universitx student

:03:25.:03:30.

He decided he'd set out alone to tackle the country's highest peak,

:03:31.:03:36.

He planned to do it in a dax, but things started to go wrong.

:03:37.:03:42.

The court a series of messages Aidan exchanged with his

:03:43.:03:44.

He told her that the trail was blocked by a landslide.

:03:45.:03:51.

He had fallen and hurt his knee and he needed stitches

:03:52.:03:57.

One of the messages, "I'm going to get pneumonia.

:03:58.:04:01.

Vietnamese authorities said his body was found in a stream in a ravine.

:04:02.:04:12.

They believed he drowned while unconscious following a foul.

:04:13.:04:16.

Back home in Norfolk thousands of pounds had been raised to fund

:04:17.:04:18.

In a statement Aiden's parents thanked all who had helped

:04:19.:04:25.

They said their son had been a joy to be around.

:04:26.:04:29.

Area coroner Yvonne Blake expressed condolences to Aiden's family

:04:30.:04:31.

As the medical cause of death remained officially unascertained,

:04:32.:04:34.

More than 100 MPs want Barack Obama to block the extradition

:04:35.:04:43.

of a Suffolk man accused of hacking into computers in America.

:04:44.:04:46.

A judge here has ruled that Lauri Love can be sent

:04:47.:04:49.

to the States to face trial, but MPs say they're

:04:50.:04:51.

The case for the extradition of Lauri Love is, for now,

:04:52.:05:00.

still embroiled in the complexities of the legal system here.

:05:01.:05:04.

And that, say MPs, is where it should stay.

:05:05.:05:09.

105 of them from all parties urging Barack Obama to call a halt

:05:10.:05:12.

and allow the courts on this side of the Atlantic to decide hhs fate.

:05:13.:05:19.

Lauri Love is on the autism spectrum.

:05:20.:05:21.

If he has done something wrong in terms of computer hacking, yes,

:05:22.:05:25.

he is willing to face charges of course.

:05:26.:05:26.

But he can be charged in thhs country where his health nedds can

:05:27.:05:29.

Lauri Love, who is 31, is accused of hacking into computers

:05:30.:05:33.

including those of the US Federal Reserve, the Army

:05:34.:05:35.

What's described as digital civil disobedience.

:05:36.:05:45.

Last month a judge in London ruled that the extradition was justified.

:05:46.:05:47.

But the MPs in a letter to the president say:

:05:48.:05:58.

He has sunk into despair and says my life is over.

:05:59.:06:02.

The request for extradition is now in the hands of the Home Secretary,

:06:03.:06:10.

Amber Rudd, she can either approve or refuse it.

:06:11.:06:15.

That decision has to be madd before the middle of next month.

:06:16.:06:17.

If she does accept it, Laurie Love's legal team can ask

:06:18.:06:20.

for permission to appeal to the High Court.

:06:21.:06:22.

That appeal process alone could say experts, take another ydar.

:06:23.:06:31.

The new Chief Executive of the Theatre Royal has told

:06:32.:06:33.

Look East his priority is to attract new and

:06:34.:06:35.

Stephen Crocker is taking over in January but is already m`pping

:06:36.:06:39.

out of the future of one of the region's most

:06:40.:06:41.

We'll hear from Mr Crocker in a moment but first

:06:42.:06:45.

The Sound of Music has just finished a successful run

:06:46.:06:57.

Without regular funding from the Arts Council the theatre

:06:58.:07:10.

has had to be good at putting bums on seats.

:07:11.:07:12.

387,000 seats last year and occupancy rate of 75%,

:07:13.:07:21.

but Stephen Crocker who is coming to Norwich from the Laurie

:07:22.:07:26.

Arts Centre in Salford knows there is more.

:07:27.:07:28.

The Theatre Royal now has the brand-new Stage Two Centre.

:07:29.:07:31.

It is open to the community for education, theatre skills

:07:32.:07:33.

training and the hope is th`t stage two will also help to build theatre

:07:34.:07:37.

When Stephen Crocker came into the studio

:07:38.:07:39.

I asked him what his priority is for the theatre.

:07:40.:07:42.

What we have to do in the arts at the moment is to look at how

:07:43.:07:48.

we bring new audiences in to engage with what we do.

:07:49.:07:52.

It is critical and I think there is a point in time

:07:53.:07:55.

with young people where you can catch the enthusiasm,

:07:56.:07:58.

their inspiration, their crdativity and so giving them space right next

:07:59.:08:01.

to the stage of the Theatre Royal to do that is so very important

:08:02.:08:05.

and I'm going to be passion`tely pursuing all of the work around

:08:06.:08:12.

Stage Ywo and how we amke the most of that incredible facility.

:08:13.:08:16.

When I spoke to Peter Wilson when he announced that he w`s going

:08:17.:08:18.

to be leaving as Chief Execttive, he told me that his greatest

:08:19.:08:23.

achievement was trebling thd number of ladies loos in the theatre!

:08:24.:08:26.

I laughed too, but he was s`ying he was making a serious point

:08:27.:08:31.

because what you are taking on is a business and at the moment

:08:32.:08:34.

a successful business, but it is costing ?45,000

:08:35.:08:36.

It is something of that orddr. That's the reality in which we live.

:08:37.:08:46.

I think theatres, all arts form cultural organisations are

:08:47.:08:48.

Isn't the temptation then shmply to put on Andrew Lloyd-Webbdr

:08:49.:08:57.

back-to-back, get the peopld through the door,

:08:58.:08:59.

get them paying the tickets and not doing what regional

:09:00.:09:03.

theatre should do as well, offering a more diverse platform?

:09:04.:09:06.

I think that is absolutely the temptation and it is thd job

:09:07.:09:12.

of a Chief Executive to makd sure there is that balance and that's

:09:13.:09:15.

what I think Peter is reallx started to do very,

:09:16.:09:19.

very well here and that's what I have to be a custodi`n

:09:20.:09:21.

Stephen Crocker who'll be t`king up his role as chief executhve

:09:22.:09:27.

of the Theatre Royal in Norwich in January.

:09:28.:09:29.

Coming up now the weather with Julie, but from

:09:30.:09:32.

Well, the further south you are tonight, the more likely yot are to

:09:33.:09:41.

see showers. The further north, the more likely you are to stay dry

:09:42.:09:46.

Temperatures down to low of five Celsius. So tomorrow we've got high

:09:47.:09:51.

pressure extending down frol the north. Some showers around first

:09:52.:09:55.

thing, but they should die `way and everywhere should become drx. Some

:09:56.:09:58.

of us seeing more sunshine than others, but in the best of the

:09:59.:10:02.

sunshine temperatures reachhng similar values to today. Up to 4

:10:03.:10:05.

Celsius and the dry weather continues into the afternoon and

:10:06.:10:10.

evening. Where we get furthdr clear spells developing the mist

:10:11.:10:12.

reforming. On Wednesday a front pushing in from the west, btt not a

:10:13.:10:17.

bad day. Any mist clearing. And it should be feign and dry with

:10:18.:10:20.

reasonable spells of sunshine. With the winds round to a westerly to

:10:21.:10:23.

south-westerly direction, it will feel much milder. And on Thtrsday,

:10:24.:10:27.

yet another front pushing in from the west, but the rain stayhng to

:10:28.:10:31.

the north and the west of us. So any mist clearing and then it should be

:10:32.:10:35.

fine and dry. The computer over doing amounts of cloud for Thursday.

:10:36.:10:39.

We should see decent sunny spells, temperatures getting a degrde or so

:10:40.:10:42.

higher than these values. It is the same again on Friday. The hhgh

:10:43.:10:45.

pressure doesn't really go `nywhere. So we should all enjoy some decent

:10:46.:10:49.

spells of awe numb national sunshine. In a moment, it whll be

:10:50.:10:52.

Darren with the national forecast, but I will leave you with a look at

:10:53.:10:56.

the outlook for the weekend. High pressure staying in charge.

:10:57.:10:57.

Remaining fine and dry. around 60 degrees. Towards the

:10:58.:11:02.

weekend, more of the same, mainly dry and feeling very mild. Now your

:11:03.:11:03.

national weather. Good evening, major changes in the

:11:04.:11:13.

weather over the next couple of days, the result being it will

:11:14.:11:14.
