Hull's City of Culture webshte crashes again as people | :00:14. | :00:22.
struggle to get tickets next year's first event. | :00:23. | :00:24.
All the things that people say negatively about Hull, | :00:25. | :00:37.
it says they are true and so we had that chance to show them | :00:38. | :00:40.
Anger as a private company wins the contract to provide pathent | :00:41. | :00:46.
And a chilly night to come `cross East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire | :00:47. | :00:49.
Hanging onto the cold air for the next few days. | :00:50. | :00:52.
City of Culture organisers say they're looking into technical | :00:53. | :01:01.
problems on their website as people tried to get free tickets | :01:02. | :01:04.
First, the website crashed then left users in a queue | :01:05. | :01:07.
of thousands, even when all the tickets had gone. | :01:08. | :01:09.
City of Culture blamed too lany people trying to use their website | :01:10. | :01:12.
at the same time, but after two previous ticket launches | :01:13. | :01:15.
being dogged by technical problems they promised this one | :01:16. | :01:17.
Here's our culture correspondent, Anne Marie Tasker. | :01:18. | :01:24.
A fireworks extravaganza called In With A Bang. | :01:25. | :01:26.
But many people fizzled out as they tried to book tickets | :01:27. | :01:29.
Among them was Steve Cook, who lives in the city | :01:30. | :01:34.
of culture, but won't be at its opening showcase. | :01:35. | :01:37.
When we did get to the front of the queue, which was | :01:38. | :01:40.
a significant time later, something like 45 minutes l`ter | :01:41. | :01:42.
the website didn't actually allow you to buy the ticket | :01:43. | :01:44.
It says all the things that people say negatively about Hull. | :01:45. | :01:51.
So we had the chance to show them that we were better than th`t | :01:52. | :01:57.
The BBC has received dozens of complaints | :01:58. | :02:03.
Although some managed to get hold of tickets | :02:04. | :02:08.
in the space of just 20 minttes others were left in a queue | :02:09. | :02:11.
for more than two hours, long beyond when tickets had | :02:12. | :02:15.
Others were told their passwords were incorrect. | :02:16. | :02:20.
Some got to the top of the pueue to find a message saying | :02:21. | :02:23.
Others, got to the end of the process to find the 'book | :02:24. | :02:27.
And one ticketing website s`ys a long queueing times and p`ges not | :02:28. | :02:31.
updating are rarely problems for other popular events. | :02:32. | :02:33.
We've had events sell out in five minutes, | :02:34. | :02:36.
big arenas and stadiums across the country. | :02:37. | :02:38.
Stuff like Coldplay at the principality Stadium | :02:39. | :02:44.
Stuff like Coldplay at the Principality Stadium | :02:45. | :02:45.
And Bross at the O2 arena rdcently were sold out in one minute. | :02:46. | :02:52.
It's not the first time there have been problems with Hull's | :02:53. | :02:54.
When tickets were first madd available for July's Place des Anges | :02:55. | :02:58.
When the 2017 programme was announced in September, | :02:59. | :03:01.
And just last week, came this promise... | :03:02. | :03:05.
We've learned a lot from wh`t's happened over the past few lonths. | :03:06. | :03:08.
We've stress tested it, we've ran thousands of pretdnd | :03:09. | :03:10.
So I have utter confidence that we're going to be fine this time. | :03:11. | :03:16.
Today, the city of culture team said some users experienced technical | :03:17. | :03:19.
difficulties in getting on the site in the first 20 minutes, | :03:20. | :03:22.
They say there's a second opportunity to apply on lind this | :03:23. | :03:27.
They say there's a second opportunity to apply online this | :03:28. | :03:33.
So for anyone else wanting a ringside seat on January the st, | :03:34. | :03:37.
Anne-Marie Tasker, BBC Look North, Hull. | :03:38. | :03:47.
A former carer from East Yorkshire has appeared in court accusdd | :03:48. | :03:50.
of fraudulently taking nearly ?300,000 from the woman | :03:51. | :03:52.
58-year-old Julie Sayles is accused of taking the money | :03:53. | :03:55.
from 102-year-old Edith Negts in 2014 when she was her | :03:56. | :03:57.
Julie Sayles pleaded NOT guhlty to all charges and will go | :03:58. | :04:03.
Patients at Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Goole Hospit`ls | :04:04. | :04:08.
are expected to get a normal service tomorrow following disruption caused | :04:09. | :04:10.
Operations and appointments have been cancelled at all Lincolnshire | :04:11. | :04:16.
hospitals over the last two days because of IT Problems. | :04:17. | :04:18.
Investigations are continuing into what's believed to be one | :04:19. | :04:23.
of the worst cyber attacks on hospitals in this countrx. | :04:24. | :04:31.
Unions have criticised a decision to allow a private company to take | :04:32. | :04:34.
over running some ambulance services in Hull. | :04:35. | :04:38.
The Thames Ambulance Servicd has recently taken over the pathent | :04:39. | :04:41.
transport contract across northern Lincolnshire from the NHS | :04:42. | :04:45.
and now looks set to run a similar service in Hull. | :04:46. | :04:48.
The Yorkshire Ambulance service currently provides transport | :04:49. | :05:02.
for patients who are unable to get to and from hospitals because | :05:03. | :05:05.
of their medical conditions - patients in need of life saving | :05:06. | :05:07.
treatment like chemotherapy or dialysis are often helped. | :05:08. | :05:10.
The contract to provide this service in Hull was put up for tenddr | :05:11. | :05:14.
by the local Clinical Commissioning Group. | :05:15. | :05:16.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service bid to keep the contract | :05:17. | :05:19.
but we understand it's lost out to a private company | :05:20. | :05:22.
A decision condemned by the Union which represents many | :05:23. | :05:28.
Something is should be in the public's right to control and the | :05:29. | :05:43.
NHS is one of them. And the Ambulance Service is an important | :05:44. | :05:47.
part of that. So giving that to a private company is not the right | :05:48. | :05:49.
place. It will now be run bx a place. It will now be run bx a | :05:50. | :05:53.
company that needs to make ` profit. Whenever you give it to somdbody | :05:54. | :05:57.
that needs to make a proper, it is not run for the right reasons. | :05:58. | :06:00.
Because of a confidentialitx clause neither Hull's CCG nor the Thames | :06:01. | :06:03.
But just last month, the Thames group took over | :06:04. | :06:06.
the running of non urgent p`tient transport across | :06:07. | :06:08.
The same company also moved its headquarters from Essex to Lincoln. | :06:09. | :06:19.
We know a similar contract will be up for grabs in east Riding shortly | :06:20. | :06:24.
and we also know managers whthin the Thames group will be interested in | :06:25. | :06:27.
bidding for similar contracts in our area. Thank you. | :06:28. | :06:31.
Earlier I spoke to the Hull East MP Karl Turner and asked him if he d | :06:32. | :06:34.
welcome a private company coming in if it did a better than job | :06:35. | :06:38.
I don't think they can do a better job. | :06:39. | :06:41.
Look, it's disappointing thhs, but I don't blame the CCG | :06:42. | :06:43.
and I don't blame Yorkshire Ambulance Service. | :06:44. | :06:45.
The blame for this must be firmly at the door of the Tory govdrnment | :06:46. | :06:48.
who legislated in the health and social care act to dict`te | :06:49. | :06:54.
to CCGs that they must use the private sector in procurement. | :06:55. | :06:57.
Let me come back to that in a moment, Unison say it's bad | :06:58. | :07:00.
for staff and bad for patients, they can't possibly know th`t | :07:01. | :07:03.
until something is actually tried, and nor can you? | :07:04. | :07:06.
No, we can't and the truth hs, we have to see what their sdrvice | :07:07. | :07:10.
is like and make sure it's up to scratch. | :07:11. | :07:12.
But the reality is, it seems pretty strange does on it, | :07:13. | :07:16.
that turns Ambulance Servicd will running patient transport | :07:17. | :07:19.
People are probably unlikelx to be able to understand that. | :07:20. | :07:31.
Your constituents will only care about the transport they get. | :07:32. | :07:37.
They are not going to be bothered about who is running the service, | :07:38. | :07:40.
I think people will be worrhed about who is providing the service. | :07:41. | :07:44.
I think people are concerned that this government are providing | :07:45. | :07:46.
an opportunity for the priv`te sector to run public servicds.. | :07:47. | :07:49.
They don't want the private sector to be involved in running it. | :07:50. | :07:54.
Mr Turner, during the New L`bour years, you were driving | :07:55. | :07:57.
through reforms in the NHS and using private money, | :07:58. | :08:01.
PFI deals, you know that, you did it? | :08:02. | :08:05.
Peter, the health and social care act provides a situation whdreby CCG | :08:06. | :08:11.
must go to the private sector for 49% of their procurement. | :08:12. | :08:16.
That's very different to thd tiny percentages which the previous | :08:17. | :08:19.
Labour government used to get waiting lists down. | :08:20. | :08:21.
That's the difference, Peter. | :08:22. | :08:23.
This is the Tory government's idea of a private good and public bad. | :08:24. | :08:30.
Just a final question, if that service was run | :08:31. | :08:41.
better by Thames than the Yorkshire Ambulance | :08:42. | :08:43.
Service, hypothetically, would you then back it? | :08:44. | :08:45.
Peter, the reality is, thank goodness the people | :08:46. | :08:48.
who were running it in the first place, Yorkshire Ambulance | :08:49. | :08:51.
Service, the same staff will be running it now. | :08:52. | :08:54.
Because they will be TUPE transferred. | :08:55. | :08:55.
I hope the service doesn't go down the pan. | :08:56. | :08:59.
The fear I've got though, which is a real one, | :09:00. | :09:02.
is when a private company comes into run the NHS, | :09:03. | :09:04.
And when profits are involved in the NHS, | :09:05. | :09:08.
patient safety is normally `t risk because standards drop. | :09:09. | :09:10.
Mr Turner, very good to talk to you tonight, | :09:11. | :09:14.
The people behind plans to build a new visitor centre at Spurn | :09:15. | :09:21.
in East Yorkshire say new rdsearch shows the public | :09:22. | :09:22.
The plans for the centre have already been rejected once | :09:23. | :09:26.
Opponents say it's a flood risk and will ruin the view, | :09:27. | :09:30.
but the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust say their survey shows it's wanted. | :09:31. | :09:45.
This is fantastic research for us and excellent investment ovdr the | :09:46. | :09:51.
last few years. To have this area, it is the missing link in this | :09:52. | :09:53.
network of facilities. To have this research that says 70% | :09:54. | :09:54.
of people want to see the facility like that, | :09:55. | :09:57.
is fantastic to hear. It was a pretty chilly one `cross | :09:58. | :10:10.
East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire We are holding onto that cold out | :10:11. | :10:15.
across the next couple of d`ys. Any coastal showers fizzle out `nd | :10:16. | :10:19.
things turn dry. Temperaturds do take a tumble under clear skies Up | :10:20. | :10:26.
to three Celsius. Patchy fog across southern part of Lincolnshire. Sunny | :10:27. | :10:30.
spells elsewhere. They won't last, cloudy conditions spread from the | :10:31. | :10:35.
West. There comes the weathdr front introducing patchy rain. Tolorrow's | :10:36. | :10:38.
hires struggling at nine or 10 Celsius. It is banks to this area of | :10:39. | :10:44.
low pressure. We will see frequent showers over the next few d`ys but | :10:45. | :10:50.
it is producing cold air so do expect frosty nights. Good night. | :10:51. | :10:55.
But it from us tonight. Join us again tomorrow night if you can | :10:56. | :11:02.
up to around 12. Mick Miller has the national picture. | :11:03. | :11:12.
The weather may have turned colder but for many of us today there was | :11:13. | :11:16.
abundant sunshine. This is from | :11:17. | :11:18. |
