Good evening, the headlines from BBC Look North: | :00:00. | :00:07.
Campaigners say they'll fight on as a court orders | :00:08. | :00:09.
the Catholic Church to pay compensation for child sexual abuse. | :00:10. | :00:16.
Illegal cigarettes could have played a part in the death of three | :00:17. | :00:19.
Despite protests, Grimsby's ice rink is to close for good | :00:20. | :00:24.
after the council said it can't afford to run it. | :00:25. | :00:30.
And with some very strong winds expected for Friday | :00:31. | :00:33.
and into the Christmas weekend, join me for the latest forecast. | :00:34. | :00:43.
A judge has ordered the Catholic Church to pay ?14,000 | :00:44. | :00:45.
to a man abused as a child at a residential school | :00:46. | :00:49.
More than 200 men are making claims against the Church. | :00:50. | :00:57.
Today, as one case was successful and three were rejected, | :00:58. | :01:00.
campaigners said they would continue to fight for justice. | :01:01. | :01:02.
Caroline Bilton reports from the court in Leeds. | :01:03. | :01:09.
They are a group of more than 200 men suing the Catholic Church over | :01:10. | :01:15.
claims they were abused at a children's home | :01:16. | :01:18.
Today judgment was delivered for the first four cases. | :01:19. | :01:25.
Only one claimant was successful - not the outcome these | :01:26. | :01:28.
Absolutely feel sick to the guts of what's happened today. | :01:29. | :01:34.
Not just for myself but for the other 248 | :01:35. | :01:36.
victims of St William, and probably many more. | :01:37. | :01:40.
It's not about compensation, it's about justice and recognition | :01:41. | :01:42.
Decades of abuse took place here at the St William's-approved | :01:43. | :01:48.
The home was run by the diocese of Middlesbrough and | :01:49. | :01:53.
It is these two organisations that these men are now suing. | :01:54. | :02:00.
249 men are carrying out this litigation but it has started | :02:01. | :02:04.
Judgments were handed down here at the High Court in Leeds | :02:05. | :02:10.
The judge found only in favour of one of the claimants. | :02:11. | :02:17.
Today's judgment does not reflect on the other 245 cases that | :02:18. | :02:23.
Those acting on behalf of victims say they will appeal. | :02:24. | :02:30.
It's become a bit of a war of attrition, has this case, | :02:31. | :02:33.
and I'm confident that the evidence that I've heard, the men crying | :02:34. | :02:36.
in my office about their cases, means that we will succeed | :02:37. | :02:40.
I still have to live the nightmares of all this. | :02:41. | :02:45.
It's the worst feeling you can have to be called a liar | :02:46. | :02:48.
Nigel Feeley was 13 when he was sent to the St Williams approved | :02:49. | :02:58.
His case for compensation's still to be heard. | :02:59. | :03:03.
He was one of the boys that the former principal, | :03:04. | :03:07.
He's been jailed three times now for physically and sexually | :03:08. | :03:11.
The former chaplain was jailed in January | :03:12. | :03:15.
Today's judgment hasn't given Nigel hope he will ever be compensated. | :03:16. | :03:24.
Deflated, disappointed, but they remain determined | :03:25. | :03:36.
and hopeful that the last judgment in this case will rule in their | :03:37. | :03:40.
Illegal cigarettes could have played a part in a house fire that | :03:41. | :03:51.
killed three Polish men in Spalding in Lincolnshire. | :03:52. | :03:54.
Investigators say it's likely that a carelessly dropped cigarette | :03:55. | :03:56.
On the night of the 30th April this year, fire | :03:57. | :04:06.
devastated Leathercote House on Tower Lane in Spalding. | :04:07. | :04:09.
The 18th-century listed building was being rented out | :04:10. | :04:12.
It's one of the worst fires I've attended in terms | :04:13. | :04:22.
Witnesses say the men who died had been drinking heavily all day. | :04:23. | :04:29.
The inquest heard that the three men were all more than four times over | :04:30. | :04:35.
the legal drink-drive limit when they died. | :04:36. | :04:42.
Witnesses said the men would regularly cover the smoke | :04:43. | :04:45.
detectors in their rooms to stop the alarms going off | :04:46. | :04:48.
so they could smoke indoors, something that was against | :04:49. | :04:51.
The building was so badly damaged, little evidence of how the fire | :04:52. | :04:56.
But investigators believe it's likely a carelessly dropped | :04:57. | :05:01.
These illegally imported cigarettes were found in one | :05:02. | :05:05.
of the men's bedrooms, and all were known to | :05:06. | :05:07.
To be sold legally in the UK, cigarettes must stop | :05:08. | :05:12.
Those that were recovered failed the safety tests. | :05:13. | :05:18.
It's not definitive, there's no such thing as, | :05:19. | :05:21.
"Can a fire-safe cigarette cause a fire?" | :05:22. | :05:25.
But the likelihood is a lot less by using shop-bought | :05:26. | :05:30.
Lincolnshire Trading Standards says it's a continuing problem. | :05:31. | :05:35.
Trading Standards do work really hard to partner | :05:36. | :05:38.
with Lincolnshire Police to tackle the issue, but it is one | :05:39. | :05:41.
that we currently have seven investigations pending for. | :05:42. | :05:46.
South Lincolnshire Coroner Murray Spittal told the inquest: "The blood | :05:47. | :06:00.
The coroner's conclusion was that the men died by misadventure. | :06:01. | :06:03.
But by habitually disabling smoke detectors, they may have denied | :06:04. | :06:07.
themselves early warning of the fire that claimed their lives. | :06:08. | :06:17.
All of the residents of a Lincolnshire care home | :06:18. | :06:19.
which announced its closure after a bad inspection have been | :06:20. | :06:21.
The Limes, at Scopwick near Lincoln, is being shut by its owners | :06:22. | :06:26.
following a critical report by the Care Quality Commission. | :06:27. | :06:30.
The last of the 19 residents moved out today. | :06:31. | :06:35.
Grimsby's Ice Arena is to close for good, ending more than 80 years | :06:36. | :06:38.
The decision was taken at a meeting this afternoon, | :06:39. | :06:52.
with councillors blaming the increasing costs | :06:53. | :06:54.
They've been talking about this since 2009, | :06:55. | :06:58.
Well, it's finally come down to money - as simple as that. | :06:59. | :07:02.
There's been an ice rink at that site in Grimsby since 1975. | :07:03. | :07:05.
But over the last few years, it's become clear it's not | :07:06. | :07:08.
bringing in enough money, so it's costing too much to run. | :07:09. | :07:11.
Now, if we look back at some of the events of recent years, | :07:12. | :07:14.
in 2009 there were plans to knock it down. | :07:15. | :07:16.
That was stopped by a petition with more than 32,000 signatures. | :07:17. | :07:18.
Later that same year, while they were still | :07:19. | :07:20.
debating its future, the ice rink received | :07:21. | :07:22.
official recognition for the quality of its lessons | :07:23. | :07:25.
from the National Iceskating Association. | :07:26. | :07:28.
But in June 2014, the ice rink's cooling system failed, | :07:29. | :07:30.
At that stage, the council did put in a temporary ice | :07:31. | :07:36.
pad costing ?200,000, and they said they were looking for | :07:37. | :07:39.
They haven't found anyone who can take over without | :07:40. | :07:46.
And they say that at the same time as they've been dealing | :07:47. | :07:51.
with government funding cuts, this means the ice rink | :07:52. | :07:53.
There's just no money to be found, we just didn't have the funding, | :07:54. | :07:57.
and I've said earlier on, because of the Government taking | :07:58. | :07:59.
such large amounts of our funding now, and I'm talking | :08:00. | :08:02.
about 70 million now in the last six years, | :08:03. | :08:04.
we're just finding it very difficult now to provide the services | :08:05. | :08:07.
What do people think the impact of this decision will be? | :08:08. | :08:11.
There's a lot of sadness amongst people who use the ice rink. | :08:12. | :08:14.
There was a protest today before the council meeting. | :08:15. | :08:16.
100 or so people went along to try to convince | :08:17. | :08:18.
But in the end it was a unanimous decision. | :08:19. | :08:22.
Thousands of people visit the rink every year and those that will be | :08:23. | :08:25.
most affected by this are probably the hockey clubs for both children | :08:26. | :08:28.
There's at least four or five ice hockey teams that | :08:29. | :08:39.
And it's a long way to go to the nearest | :08:40. | :08:44.
ice rink from here - the nearest one | :08:45. | :08:46.
You can't expect people to travel there two or three times a week. | :08:47. | :08:53.
So basically, you close down the rink, you deprive | :08:54. | :08:56.
them of their sport and their recreational activities. | :08:57. | :09:04.
So the protesters say they'll continue to fight this. | :09:05. | :09:06.
They're hoping the scrutiny committee will overturn | :09:07. | :09:07.
And to be fair to the council, they say they will keep looking | :09:08. | :09:12.
for someone to take over the rink and run it commercially. | :09:13. | :09:15.
But if that doesn't happen, the rink will have to close | :09:16. | :09:19.
We've certainly had a big response to that story tonight. We will | :09:20. | :09:32.
report back on that tomorrow. Hull's Ferens Art Gallery now has | :09:33. | :09:35.
an opening date following its ?4.5 Visitors will be able to see | :09:36. | :09:38.
the gallery's collection Paintings and sculptures started | :09:39. | :09:41.
being returned to the building two weeks ago following 15 months | :09:42. | :09:44.
of work to improve lighting Not a bad day to come tomorrow. Most | :09:45. | :10:07.
of us dry with some sunshine. The Christmas Day, a number of isobars, | :10:08. | :10:13.
meaning fairly widespread gales. Temperatures into double figures, so | :10:14. | :10:17.
feeling mild as well. Just one or two isolated showers in the West, | :10:18. | :10:22.
otherwise dry with clear periods overnight tonight. A few icy patches | :10:23. | :10:27.
possible on untreated services tomorrow. A lovely sunny start and a | :10:28. | :10:32.
breezy day with one or two showers. -- untreated surfaces. Mostly fine | :10:33. | :10:39.
with a good deal of sunshine. Feeling chilly with temperatures up | :10:40. | :10:43.
to six or seven. A very windy day on Friday with heavy rain later on. | :10:44. | :10:50.
That's it from us. We are back tomorrow morning as always at | :10:51. | :10:52.
6:25am. See you then. Good night. good for us. Mild by the time we | :10:53. | :11:00.
reach Christmas Day. Hello there, there is wet and very | :11:01. | :11:03.
windy weather on Hello there, there is wet and very | :11:04. | :11:08.
windy weather on the way in the run-up to Christmas. The worst of | :11:09. | :11:11.
the weather to the northern half of the UK. We have a strengthening jet | :11:12. | :11:17.
out of North America that is propgating across the Atlantic. | :11:18. | :11:21.
Rushing our way. Picking up low pressure, deepening them, tracking | :11:22. | :11:24.
them to the north-west of Scotland, hence the wind and rain. Tonight, we | :11:25. | :11:29.
have gale force winds in the north-west of Scotland. Wintry | :11:30. | :11:32.
showers here. There is still come rain to clear from the south-east. | :11:33. | :11:37.
It will go. The skies will clear. We get patchy fog in the south-east of | :11:38. | :11:41.
England. Chilly where skies clear, particularly in the countryside, not | :11:42. | :11:44.
far away from freezing. Further north we keep the showers going | :11:45. | :11:46.
through the night and into | :11:47. | :11:47. |
