Doctors in Lincolnshire have launched a new project to try

A recent NHS review revealed that the county has some

Lincolnshire West CCG has the worst cancer detection rates

in the country - with just 33% of patients being diagnosed early.

That's compared to the national average of 50%.

After diagnosis, the current ambition is that 70% of patients

should survive the first year, but only South Lincolnshire

Now GPs at 12 practices will trial a new computer programme

to see whether it helps identify those most at risk.

Here's our health correspondent, Vicky Johnson.

Almost 1000 people a day are diagnosed with cancer in the UK.

Survival rates are improving, but patients have a much better

chance if the disease is diagnosed early.

Peter Crosby's recently had surgery to treat his lung cancer,

but initially he was given antibiotics for a persistent cough.

Took one more course, and then we decided to go

to hospital to see if there was anything on the chest.

That's when the shadow was discovered.

And it went from being an x-ray to being a CAT scan,

If Peter turned up at his doctors now, it's likely his cancer

diagnosis would be more prompt, thanks to Lincolnshire's

It would be picked up a little bit more quickly.

But Find Out Faster would h`ve meant he would have had the scan

At the moment, he's fine, which is great, but it could make

For the next six months, doctors at 12 practices

across Lincolnshire will be piloting the QCancer programme,

and this should help them predict the risk

We all know that even experienced doctors sometimes fail to m`ke

a diagnosis promptly when the symptoms aren't typical.

And this tool is just something which makes them think seriously

There'll also be much more rapid access to tests,

The majority of patients th`t come through the pathway

But for them, it's the reassurance that they don't have

cancer and they can get on with their lives.

If diagnosis rates do improve, the programme will be rolled out

A former Ukip MEP from East Yorkshire insists

There's been a lot of dry and fine weather this afternoon,

We start the day off on a fairly chilly note,

perhaps one or two showers just lingering through the morning.

Gradually, into the afternoon, the cloud will break and we will see

As we head further into next week, Tuesday looks largely dry and sunny,

So far this month most of the rain has been near Eastern coasts. That's

changing quite dramatically. All of this cloud coming in from the south

and this rain band moving across the channel into southern parts of

England right now. The rain is easing off in the south-east of

England. The main focus will be for the south-west of England where

there could be heavy bursts of rain in Devon and Cornwall. With the

shield of cloud pushing into Wales, the Midlands and the southern half

of the UK, but it isn't as cold night. Different story further

north, breaks in the cloud allowing for a touch of frost and pockets of

mist and fog. Northern areas will see spells of sunshine in the

morning. Some showers, but not as many as recently. The Midlands and
