Look North. Tonight: We can't survive on 500 a week in benefits. | :00:05. | :00:08.
The Newcastle family who say they're having to chose between | :00:08. | :00:13.
buying food or paying the bills. We've a special report. Also | :00:13. | :00:18.
tonight. Caught on camera. The shopkeeper who tackled an armed man | :00:18. | :00:22.
pointing a gun at him. More than a quarter of a million to | :00:22. | :00:26.
fish here. The angling rights that have netted a great deal of | :00:26. | :00:36.
:00:36. | :00:38. | ||
interest. Expensive. This is not expensive. If you get a couple of | :00:38. | :00:43.
mates to come in with you, it is not expensive. And it's the kitchen | :00:43. | :00:48.
which talks back to the chef, in French too. | :00:48. | :00:51.
A bit closer to home, Steve Cram launches a new marathon race for | :00:51. | :00:54.
the region. And while Newcastle go for Cup glory - Carlisle's players | :00:54. | :01:04.
show just how to bounce back from a bad result. | :01:04. | :01:09.
We can't survive on 500 a week in benefits. That's the controversial | :01:09. | :01:16.
message from one Tyneside family. The Wilsons say Government plans to | :01:16. | :01:19.
limit benefits to 500 a week for most families would leave them | :01:19. | :01:24.
struggling to survive. But critics say that's more than many families | :01:24. | :01:28.
get for a full working week. Our Political Correspondent, Mark | :01:28. | :01:38.
:01:38. | :01:40. | ||
Denten, has this special report. The Meadowell estate, North | :01:40. | :01:46.
Tyneside. Terry knows this area well. A former shipyard electrician. | :01:46. | :01:55.
He's now on benefits but so is most of this community. I know for a | :01:55. | :01:58.
fact that there are third generation of people unemployed. | :01:58. | :02:02.
People with no chance in life that will never do a day's work. They | :02:02. | :02:08.
will be on benefits for all their lives. A recent survey found 90 % | :02:08. | :02:14.
of families had no one in full-time work. Over 20 % of households had | :02:14. | :02:18.
someone on long-term invalidity benefit. Changes to the benefit | :02:18. | :02:22.
system FX sell it -- thousands of people right across the country but | :02:22. | :02:27.
the simple fact is the matter most in areas like this. The government | :02:27. | :02:31.
is shaking up the welfare system. Ministers say they want to make | :02:31. | :02:34.
sure that no-one's better off on benefits than in work. They also | :02:34. | :02:37.
want to make the system simpler by combining most existing benefits | :02:37. | :02:40.
into one universal credit. And crucially there will be a 500 a | :02:40. | :02:44.
week limit to the amount most people can claim. No-one's worked | :02:44. | :02:50.
in the Wilson family for a decade. But all told, Dave and Emma get | :02:50. | :02:58.
nearly 490 a week in benefits for themselves and their three children. | :02:58. | :03:04.
But the family say they still face a choice, pay the bills or buy food. | :03:04. | :03:11.
A lot of the time it is a struggle to pay the bills. Sometimes we have | :03:11. | :03:19.
to miss a couple of pills because we do not get enough money. But the | :03:19. | :03:22.
Wilson family's getting bigger - another baby's on the way. They'll | :03:22. | :03:26.
get even more benefits then but that will take them over the 500 | :03:26. | :03:31.
pound a week limit. I don't think it's fair. The government to not | :03:31. | :03:36.
know what people are going through. When the baby is born, we will | :03:37. | :03:40.
struggle even more to survive, basically. But supporters of the | :03:40. | :03:44.
welfare plans say it's vital money's saved from the system. | :03:44. | :03:49.
per week is around -- the equivalent of earning around | :03:49. | :03:54.
35,000. Nobody should be taking this in benefits. It is a lot of | :03:54. | :03:58.
money. We have to remember that every penny the government spends | :03:58. | :04:01.
is coming from hard-working taxpayers' pockets. Ministers say | :04:01. | :04:04.
areas like this will get most from changing the welfare system-as | :04:04. | :04:07.
people get back to work. But some here aren't convinced they'll | :04:07. | :04:12.
benefit. And tomorrow on Look North we'll | :04:12. | :04:14.
continue asking our Big Question about the Government's welfare | :04:14. | :04:19.
changes, "Who Benefits?" We'll hear how lone parents are affected and | :04:19. | :04:23.
how a Government scheme could get people back to work. And don't | :04:23. | :04:27.
forget your BBC local radio station will be looking at a range of | :04:27. | :04:34.
benefits issues throughout this week. | :04:34. | :04:37.
It's the nightmare of every shop worker. You're doing your job when | :04:37. | :04:40.
an armed man points a gun at you demanding money. Well, that | :04:40. | :04:44.
happened to a Sunderland shop worker one evening. But instead of | :04:44. | :04:47.
paying up, Rasaratnam Rahulan stood up to the robber and it was all | :04:47. | :04:51.
caught on camera. There's some dramatic scenes in Keith Akehurst's | :04:51. | :04:55.
report. Rasaratnam Rahulan serves a | :04:55. | :04:59.
customer in the off-licence and newsagents in Sunderland. The | :04:59. | :05:01.
Newcastle University graduate has worked in this shop in Roker for | :05:01. | :05:05.
more than five years. But one evening in August he was confronted | :05:05. | :05:08.
by an armed robber. And what happened was captured on eight | :05:08. | :05:13.
closed circuit TV cameras. The man, now known to be 32-year-old John | :05:13. | :05:23.
:05:23. | :05:32. | ||
Buckley, pulled a gun and demanded I didn't want to give him the money. | :05:32. | :05:35.
But he just turned his head a little bit and I managed to grab | :05:35. | :05:41.
the gun nothing. I thought I could manage to get the care nothing. -- | :05:41. | :05:48.
to get the gun off him. Weren't you worried about your safety? I did | :05:48. | :05:52.
not think about my safety. Bravely Mr Rahulan grabbed the gun, banging | :05:52. | :05:55.
the attacker's hand on the counter making him release his grip. | :05:56. | :05:58.
Another mystery customer grabbed the man around the neck from behind | :05:58. | :06:07.
and pulled him to the floor. He did a great job. I do not think many | :06:07. | :06:13.
customers would have done that. But he was in the army. I think he | :06:13. | :06:17.
might know what to do. The police came within three minutes. | :06:17. | :06:21.
Afterwards it was realised the gun was in fact a replica. The jovial | :06:21. | :06:26.
Mr Rahulan is a reluctant hero. is not a frightening situation for | :06:26. | :06:36.
:06:36. | :06:37. | ||
me. But you worry reluctant, brave hero? I think so. Buckley, of no | :06:37. | :06:39.
fixed abode, admitted attempted robbery and having an imitation | :06:39. | :06:42.
firearm at Newcastle Crown Court. He's been remanded in custody until | :06:42. | :06:52.
:06:52. | :06:57. | ||
Now, how much would you pay for a week's fishing? How about this - | :06:57. | :07:02.
825,000. That's the asking price for three places in a salmon | :07:02. | :07:08.
fishing syndicate - 275,000 per angler. It gets you a week's | :07:08. | :07:11.
fishing, a week every year admittedly, and even in these | :07:11. | :07:17.
economic times, the three places are expected to be snapped up. To | :07:17. | :07:20.
find out more, our Chief Reporter, Chris Stewart, has been to the | :07:20. | :07:29.
north of our region, to the River Tweed near Coldstream. | :07:29. | :07:38.
What makes it worth all that money? There is one answer. And there is | :07:38. | :07:44.
another. This is some of the finest salmon fishing in the world. | :07:44. | :07:49.
Anglers from all around the world are winning to pay what it takes. - | :07:49. | :07:54.
- willing. There are spaces for three and has added will cost them | :07:54. | :08:04.
:08:04. | :08:05. | ||
275,000 each. It is very good though. I pointed out that over 27 | :08:05. | :08:15.
:08:15. | :08:16. | ||
1/2 years, that works out at only 1,000 a week. But then it was | :08:16. | :08:22.
pointed out that I had missed a nought off! The agent believes the | :08:22. | :08:28.
view was open to challenge. If you gape -- if you get a couple of | :08:28. | :08:32.
mates to come in with you, it is not expensive. You would go on a | :08:32. | :08:36.
holiday as spend that sort of money. It is an expensive holiday but it's | :08:36. | :08:42.
this is not expensive. It is! definitely not! It will keep pace | :08:42. | :08:50.
with inflation -- keep pace with inflation. My missus told me to | :08:50. | :08:58.
grow up. Well change your missus! This man says you have to be | :08:58. | :09:06.
fortunate to be able to enjoy the fishing. Yes, it is true. You have | :09:06. | :09:10.
to be fortunate. But you are getting some of the best fishing in | :09:10. | :09:16.
the world. And if fishing is important, plus it is an | :09:16. | :09:20.
environmental thing, you are with very good people and just enjoying | :09:20. | :09:25.
yourselves. That is an important part of one's life. For the other | :09:25. | :09:32.
man in the boat, it is his life and his livelihood. It is not a job, it | :09:32. | :09:38.
is a way of life. It is not about clocking in and clocking out, you | :09:38. | :09:43.
start when you start and finish when you finish. Whether you can | :09:43. | :09:46.
afford it or not and whether you like it or not, it does make a big | :09:46. | :09:50.
difference to the economy in this part of the world. If you are | :09:50. | :09:53.
waiting for a salmon to be caught, it did not happen while we were | :09:53. | :10:03.
:10:03. | :10:07. | ||
there. We have a diverse programme for you | :10:07. | :10:15.
this evening. A family struggling on benefits and those gentlemen! | :10:15. | :10:18.
The jury at the Grayrigg train crash inquest has been given a | :10:18. | :10:20.
detailed description of the final moments before the train crashed. | :10:20. | :10:24.
Margaret Masson, who was 84, was killed when the train came off the | :10:24. | :10:27.
tracks north of Kendal in Cumbria in February 2007. Today jury | :10:27. | :10:29.
members were shown how the front carriage in which she was | :10:29. | :10:32.
travelling jack-knifed before rolling down an embankment. A 32- | :10:32. | :10:35.
year-old man's in hospital with serious head injuries and a broken | :10:35. | :10:37.
shoulder after three men with baseball bats attacked him at a | :10:38. | :10:40.
Carlisle garage. It happened at Whiteclosegate on the outskirts of | :10:40. | :10:44.
the city just after 7:00am. The men are believed to have driven off in | :10:44. | :10:50.
a Subaru car which was later found burnt out nearby. | :10:50. | :10:56.
All I've seen is the CCTV and it is a horrific assault. The victim is | :10:56. | :11:01.
not armed in any way, shape or form. The men that attack him, two of | :11:01. | :11:05.
them have baseball bat. He is pushed to the floor and then they | :11:05. | :11:08.
said about assaulting him. It is horrendous. It is one of the worst | :11:08. | :11:12.
I have seen on CCTV. A mobile crane overturned today, narrowly missing | :11:12. | :11:17.
a bungalow. It happened at Ebchester near Consett this morning. | :11:17. | :11:20.
It's suggested the brakes on the crane failed as the driver came | :11:20. | :11:23.
down a nearby hill. The vehicle came to a rest completely upside | :11:23. | :11:29.
down. The driver escaped unhurt. There's still plenty more to come | :11:29. | :11:38.
in the programme. Jeff with news of a new Sunderland marathon. | :11:38. | :11:48.
:11:48. | :11:51. | ||
President Nicolas Sarkozy Learning the lingo while learning to cook. | :11:51. | :11:57.
We give a new computer programme a try that can do just that. And I | :11:57. | :12:01.
will have a full weather forecast. Over the past week, the North East | :12:01. | :12:04.
has been fully established on the arts map of Britain, with people | :12:04. | :12:06.
continuing to queue to see the Turner Prize exhibition at the | :12:07. | :12:10.
Baltic in Gateshead. Well, now another of the region's attractions | :12:10. | :12:14.
is planning on making a name for itself. The National Glass Centre | :12:14. | :12:17.
in Sunderland is to undergo a major revamp to bring world class | :12:17. | :12:20.
exhibitions to the city and create a new line in Sunderland-made | :12:20. | :12:24.
glassware. Chris Storey reports. The National Glass Centre in | :12:24. | :12:28.
Sunderland has had a bumpy history. The first recipient of Arts Lottery | :12:28. | :12:31.
Funding, it was the brainchild of the now defunct Tyne and Wear | :12:31. | :12:37.
Development Corporation. It was charged with creating a truly | :12:37. | :12:39.
national arts attraction that also brought alive Sunderland's 1,300 | :12:39. | :12:45.
year glass making heritage. Its new boss concedes, it's achieved | :12:45. | :12:52.
neither. I think one of the recurring themes that we get back | :12:52. | :13:00.
in terms of visitor feedback is, where it is the glass? I am afraid | :13:00. | :13:04.
that at the moment, they go away a little disappointed because we do | :13:04. | :13:09.
not have the physical capacity to be able to show enough exhibitions. | :13:09. | :13:17.
At the moment, we are a little bit of a one-trick pony. It's now under | :13:17. | :13:20.
the wing of Sunderland University and has received a vote of | :13:20. | :13:22.
confidence in the shape of 1.1 million of funding from Arts | :13:22. | :13:26.
Council England. The plan is to extend the main gallery to bring in | :13:26. | :13:31.
regular exhibitions of some of the world's great glass collections. A | :13:31. | :13:33.
reconfigured upper gallery will enhance the Sunderland glass making | :13:33. | :13:37.
story. The popular glass-blowing sessions and courses will be | :13:37. | :13:41.
increased. And next Easter, the first master glass blower will | :13:41. | :13:50.
arrive to create a new range of made in Sunderland glass. One of | :13:50. | :13:56.
the many things that has been missing is a clear identity in our | :13:56. | :14:04.
production and in the shop of glass made in Sunderland. In future, you | :14:04. | :14:11.
will be buying Sunderland Glass. Working on the telly, I sometimes | :14:12. | :14:15.
feel like I'm living my life in a shop window but two young men in | :14:15. | :14:18.
Harrogate have gone one stage further. They're doing it quite | :14:18. | :14:22.
literally. They call themselves the Harrogate mannequins and their week | :14:22. | :14:25.
long sojourn in an empty shop is all in aid of charity. Peter Lugg | :14:25. | :14:29.
has been keeping an eye on them. Yes, they may look a couple of | :14:29. | :14:32.
dummies prancing around in a Harrogate shop window but Ben and | :14:32. | :14:34.
Jason are also raising thousands for charity just by living out | :14:34. | :14:39.
their lives in public. You have got to remember that people can see all | :14:39. | :14:43.
the time. There is always a small crowd of people that you have to be | :14:44. | :14:53.
:14:54. | :14:55. | ||
careful what you are doing! My mum gave us a knitting lesson before we | :14:55. | :15:05.
:15:05. | :15:06. | ||
came in here. Reminders of what it is all in aid of. We are raising | :15:06. | :15:11.
money for the local cat -- cancer hospital. They need to raise 3.5 | :15:11. | :15:14.
million just from fund-raising every year. The mannequins' | :15:14. | :15:17.
exploits have attracted a huge following on the internet. Day or | :15:17. | :15:20.
night they're always on full view and what exploits these boys get up | :15:20. | :15:30.
:15:30. | :15:40. | ||
I think it is wicked, what they are doing. They are good friends of | :15:41. | :15:46.
mine and they are passionate about what they do. What would you find | :15:46. | :15:51.
the tough as part? The people outside banging on the windows! | :15:51. | :16:01.
:16:01. | :16:02. | ||
spectacle lasts till Sunday. Be sure not to miss it. I could not | :16:02. | :16:08.
do that! It looked like fun! Last night we | :16:08. | :16:12.
told you about the region's first managerial casualty. Tonight we can | :16:12. | :16:16.
tell you about the second. Jimmy Crease has resigned as manager of | :16:16. | :16:19.
Berwick Rangers, who were dumped out of the Scottish Cup by the | :16:19. | :16:21.
Highland League club, Deveronvale, at the weekend. Coach and assistant | :16:22. | :16:24.
manager Alan Little will take charge until Rangers appoint a | :16:24. | :16:29.
successor. Not quite a quarter of the Premier | :16:29. | :16:31.
League season gone and already fourth-placed Newcastle have picked | :16:31. | :16:35.
up around half the points needed to avoid relegation. So tonight's | :16:36. | :16:39.
Carling Cup tie at Blackburn would seem to be a welcome distraction. | :16:39. | :16:42.
But manager Alan Pardew may be tempted to put out a strong side | :16:42. | :16:52.
with a quarter-final place at stake. Here's Mark Tulip. They used to | :16:52. | :17:02.
:17:02. | :17:02. | ||
work together at Reading. Steve Keenan's Blackburn need to win. | :17:02. | :17:07.
is tough for the team. It is a tough agenda for them. It is not | :17:07. | :17:10.
something that they cannot come through. It is important that they | :17:10. | :17:14.
get a result. I feel that they will be very strong. At the level we are | :17:14. | :17:20.
playing at, there will be nothing between us. It is about desire and | :17:20. | :17:25.
on the night, making sure that you do your job as best you can and | :17:25. | :17:31.
hopefully win the game. They have an advantage, they are the home | :17:31. | :17:37.
side. It is a tough game for us. The Newcastle boss has been tight- | :17:37. | :17:45.
lipped all week about his selection. Injuries were in force some of | :17:45. | :17:55.
:17:55. | :18:00. | ||
squad rotation. I don't like to think of it being an injury getting | :18:00. | :18:05.
me an opportunity. But you want to be part of a team that is | :18:05. | :18:09.
successful. To be like that, it is excellent. Everyone is playing well | :18:09. | :18:13.
and everyone is fit at the moment, most people are fit. Everyone is | :18:13. | :18:23.
:18:23. | :18:26. | ||
fighting for their place. It is good for me. It's a wonderful | :18:26. | :18:30.
feeling. Football's about enjoying yourself and living the dream. | :18:30. | :18:33.
Those were the words of the Carlisle manager, Greg Abbott, | :18:33. | :18:35.
after his team's superb second-half comeback against one of League | :18:35. | :18:37.
One's big hitters Sheffield Wednesday at Brunton Park last | :18:38. | :18:42.
night. Having been thumped by leaders Charlton, Carlisle were | :18:42. | :18:45.
looking for a big improvement against third top Sheffield | :18:45. | :18:49.
Wednesday. They could have gone in front too but James Berett was | :18:49. | :18:53.
denied here. And they were made to pay when Ben Marshall's precise | :18:53. | :18:58.
finish found the net. But for some desperate defending Wednesday would | :18:58. | :19:03.
have gone further ahead. The Cumbrians though started the second | :19:03. | :19:05.
half well with three goals in fourteen minutes, the first from | :19:05. | :19:11.
centre-back Lubo Michalik. Then two fine finishes for the 6,000 crowd | :19:11. | :19:15.
to admire. Rory Loy's was a peach, even though opinion was divided on | :19:15. | :19:20.
the acrobatic celebration. Liam Noble made it 3-1 before Carlisle | :19:20. | :19:27.
old boy Gary Madine was sent off for a second yellow card. And, | :19:27. | :19:30.
although Wednesday pulled one back late on to ensure a nervy finish, | :19:30. | :19:35.
Carlisle got the win that takes them up to eighth. Two places and | :19:35. | :19:38.
two points behind are Hartlepool. Just over 5,000 at Victoria Park | :19:38. | :19:42.
hoping their side could build on Saturday's away win. Who knows what | :19:42. | :19:45.
would have happened if Mick Wadsworth's men had taken the lead | :19:45. | :19:49.
with just over a minute gone. But two second half goals put in-form | :19:49. | :19:56.
Tranmere in charge. Andy Monkhouse was close to pulling one back but | :19:56. | :20:01.
Hartlepool's nine match unbeaten start seems a long time ago. | :20:01. | :20:04.
Now, you would have thought, after all the fuss about the runner who | :20:04. | :20:07.
took a bus to finish the 26-mile course round Kielder, Steve Cram | :20:07. | :20:10.
would have had enough of marathons. He organised that race, of course, | :20:11. | :20:15.
and spent the next week taking press calls from around the world. | :20:15. | :20:21.
Well, now he's offering up a new marathon on Wearside. It'll be the | :20:21. | :20:23.
centrepiece to a weekend of festivities, running alongside the | :20:23. | :20:26.
Sunderland 10k and the junior race, which the former Olympic medallist | :20:26. | :20:32.
set up last summer. The Marathon of the North will wind its way through | :20:32. | :20:36.
the city streets and the coastline on May the 6th. Don't worry, that | :20:36. | :20:44.
means you still have more than six months to get in shape. The title | :20:44. | :20:48.
is giving a clue as to what we want to do. We are trying to broaden out | :20:48. | :20:53.
the appeal. Hopefully it will attract people from wider afield. | :20:53. | :20:56.
Sadly, it may have to take place without two of Sunderland's most | :20:56. | :21:04.
prominent citizens. I have knocked -- I have not run a step for about | :21:04. | :21:09.
six weeks. I am hoping to start back running tomorrow. We have | :21:09. | :21:13.
plenty of time to get fit and healthy and my plans are the London | :21:13. | :21:17.
Marathon next year, in the hope of making the Olympic team. I wish I | :21:17. | :21:21.
could but I am just not fit enough. I will be supporting people and | :21:21. | :21:27.
cheering from the sidelines, definitely. Yes, you are allowed to | :21:27. | :21:31.
catch a bus, but only to get to the start on time and to take you home | :21:31. | :21:35.
when you finish! We had been checking the bus timetables. We are | :21:35. | :21:41.
pretty sure that no one will be able to cheat on this occasion. The | :21:41. | :21:46.
story went worldwide and I was doing interviews for American | :21:46. | :21:49.
newspapers and radio stations and Australian television. A lot of | :21:49. | :21:53.
people now know about this. We will be looking forward to welcoming | :21:53. | :22:01.
some of them next year! We will never hear the end of that story! | :22:01. | :22:11.
know you're a good cook, but are you any good at French? If you want | :22:11. | :22:14.
to improve your cooking and learn French at the same time, then | :22:14. | :22:20.
Newcastle University could have the answer. Yes, they've designed a | :22:21. | :22:25.
talking kitchen to help you do both. The computer gives the recipe | :22:25. | :22:28.
instructions in French, then acts like a satnav to guide the chef | :22:28. | :22:31.
through the process. Peter Harris can't cook or speak French. So we | :22:31. | :22:41.
:22:41. | :22:42. | ||
sent him along. So you cannot speak French and you cannot cook. This | :22:42. | :22:46.
will be the kitchen for you. interesting thing about the project | :22:46. | :22:50.
is that you were learning two skills at the same time, cooking | :22:50. | :22:54.
and French. The big picture is that fewer people are studying foreign | :22:54. | :22:58.
languages at the moment and we are hoping to tap into some of the | :22:58. | :23:00.
motivations that we know that people have in order to reverse | :23:00. | :23:10.
:23:10. | :23:18. | ||
It is telling each step, what I have to do. There are also things | :23:18. | :23:20.
on the screen that will show you and demonstrate what you're | :23:20. | :23:30.
:23:30. | :23:58. | ||
It is going really well! What?! Don't forget the flour. And if this | :23:59. | :24:02.
catches on, the university wants talking kitchens in lots of other | :24:02. | :24:12.
:24:12. | :24:12. | ||
languages as well. Do I give this to Colin or Carol? It depends which | :24:12. | :24:22.
:24:22. | :24:27. | ||
That looked quite good. Not too bad. We were not quite sure what it was | :24:27. | :24:31.
but I am sure it is delicious. What about the weather forecast? | :24:31. | :24:36.
Lots to talk about. It is half-term week. Let's have a look at what we | :24:36. | :24:45.
are in for. Tomorrow, Bright to start us off. Thank you to Michael, | :24:45. | :24:54.
for this photo. Thursday, cloudy with some rain. That rain spreading | :24:54. | :25:00.
in some places this evening. Quite cold at first tonight. Through the | :25:00. | :25:04.
night and into the early hours of tomorrow morning, it turns wet from | :25:04. | :25:11.
the south. Seven Celsius. And then through the morning, a wet walk to | :25:11. | :25:21.
:25:21. | :25:22. | ||
work in the morning. Not drive along. By mid-afternoon, it is wet | :25:22. | :25:26.
for most of the region. Just 11 degrees Celsius. That is below | :25:26. | :25:33.
average, even for this time of year. In the West, some dry patches but | :25:33. | :25:37.
through the evening, that rain is likely to scratch its way across | :25:37. | :25:43.
the entire region. -- splash its way. | :25:43. | :25:48.
A bit of a disappointing day tomorrow. There is better weather | :25:48. | :25:54.
on the way. Friday looks bright. But on Friday morning, as the rain | :25:54. | :25:58.
clears overnight, the clear skies will allow it to get quite misty. | :25:58. | :26:05.
First thing Friday, it could be a bit disappointing. But by about | :26:05. | :26:11.
10am. -- that mist and fog starts to clear and it is a bright day for | :26:11. | :26:17.
much of the rest of Friday. Saturday also looks good. Dry | :26:17. | :26:20.
across the North-East. Some rain to come in the West but then every Wed | :26:20. | :26:26.
tries out for Sunday. Everyone ending half-term. Enjoy being out | :26:26. | :26:30.
and about. The temperatures just a little bit higher by the time we | :26:30. | :26:34.
get to the end of the week. Wet tomorrow but much brighter for | :26:34. | :26:39.
Friday and Saturday. Thank you very much. | :26:39. | :26:42.
Let's have tonight's main news again. European leaders in Brussels | :26:42. | :26:49.
tried to finalise details of a plan to tackle the Euros on debt crisis. | :26:49. | :26:54.
And a family living on 500 a week on benefit say they are struggling | :26:54. | :26:58.
to pay the bills and things will get worse. | :26:58. | :27:03.
Last night, we told you the intriguing story about some strange | :27:03. | :27:07.
substance found but in the Lake District. This is it. We have had | :27:07. | :27:14.
some interesting theories on e-mail. We have one from Julian. He says it | :27:14. | :27:20.
is from otters. We have another one from John, a | :27:20. | :27:24.
local gamekeeper told him it comes from India. | :27:24. | :27:30. |
