Good evening. An investigathon's underway after more than fifty

prisoners took over part of a wing at a prison in Northumberland last

night. The Prison Officers' Association says it believes

staffing cuts at HMP Northulberland in Acklington have made it harder

for officers to tackle disorder Stuart Whincup reports.

The police and riot officers from neighbouring jails were called last

night after prisoners at HMP Northumberland refused to rdturn to

their cells. More than 50 inmates took over part of a wing. The Prison

Officers Association said some of its members were left fearing for

their safety. Staff withdrew, they say it was an unsafe environment,

they weren't happy with the staffing numbers in the prison and the

prisoners caused significant damage in the prison.

The Prison Officers Association says the disturbance comes four lonths

after the French company took over the running of the jail. During that

time, it says 130 uniformed staff have lost their jobs here as the

company looks to make big s`vings. Now, the association is questioning

whether there are another staff to control the 1300 prisoners. Sedexo

would not comment on its st`ffing levels but said it was now carrying

out an investigation into l`st night's disturbance.

A body has been found by rescuers searching for a man in his 60s. The

search started yesterday after the man failed to return from a walk.

The body was found by the rdscue team this morning. A man's died

after being hit by a car on North Tyneside.

The 60`year`old pedestrian was on the slip road for Battle Hill, off

the coast road in Wallsend late last night. A 28`year`old man has been

arrested on suspicion of catsing death by careless driving.

Two women from South Tyneside were among the first gay couples in the

country to get married todax. Same`sex marriage became legal in

England and Wales at midnight. Martin Forster went to see them tie

the knot. Something that most of us c`n take

for granted, Mandy Hutchinson and Patricial Doyle never thought they

would be allowed a wedding day. But this morning at South Shields

Registry Office, they were larried, just like any other couple. It is

not quite often you get govdrnment legislation with champagne corks

popping but this is one of them It is monumental and historic `nd

everybody who knows us knows how much we love each other and it's

something that is meant to be. And it looks like today is the first of

many. At an event yesterday in Newcastle, there was no shortage of

same sex couples wanting more information about getting m`rried.

We have people signed up to get married in the city, as early as

next week, others in the sulmer What we are doing at the molent is

promoting the various places and the ways people can get married in

Newcastle because we want to make sure everybody has the chance to

celebrate what is a significant step forward.

The search to find a student missing in the Lake District is continuing.

This evening, friends of 20`year`old Matthew Jordan, from Middlesbrough,

released this photo of him taken during their trip to Winderlere in

the hope that someone may rdcognise him. He was last seen in Bowness in

the early hours of Thursday. Meanwhile, police are searching for

a missing 92`year`old man from Corbridge in Northumberland. Thomas

Diggle, from Abbeyfield House in Market Place, hasn't been sden since

Thursday night. One of the biggest boxing contests

to be staged in the region takes place tonight. Darlington boxer

Stuart Hall defends his IBF world bantamweight title against Durham's

Martin Ward ` in what will be the first all`North East world title

fight. The historic clash is at the Newcastle Arena.

And BBC Tees will have commdntary of the fight with all the build up from

nine tonight. Football and in the Premier League

Southampton strolled to a 4`0 win over a very poor Newcastle `nd

jumped above them in the le`gue In the Championship, Middlesbrough won

2`0 away at Brighton. In Le`gue One, a goalless draw for Carlisld away at

Tranmere. In League Two, Hartlepool zero, Cheltenham one.
