Hello, welcome to Look North. In the - on BBC One we | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello, welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight. Are we on the | :00:00. | :00:08.
verge of another coal rush? New technology could unlock the energy | :00:09. | :00:11.
of trillions of tonnes off the North East coast. Also tonight, a vital | :00:12. | :00:14.
hydrotherapy pool for disabled children will close unless funding | :00:15. | :00:20.
is found fast. You're hired. The drive to recruit 2,000 apprdntices | :00:21. | :00:25.
in a hundred days. And what's happened to our old County names? | :00:26. | :00:31.
It's 40 years since bureaucrats tried to wipe them out, but did they | :00:32. | :00:35.
succeed? And in sport the g`mes are running out for Sunderland hn their | :00:36. | :00:38.
bid to clinch Premier Leagud survival. We're live at the Stadium | :00:39. | :00:42.
of Light ahead of the clash with West Ham. | :00:43. | :00:55.
It's a plan with big numbers. Thousands of jobs created bx | :00:56. | :01:02.
trillions of tonnes of coal. At the moment that coal's sitting ` mile | :01:03. | :01:06.
and half under the sea off the North East Coast. But as Look North | :01:07. | :01:09.
originally reported last Max, a Newcastle firm plans to turn it into | :01:10. | :01:13.
gases that can be used by industry. Now the Government's backed the | :01:14. | :01:17.
scheme to the tune of over ` billion pounds. But environmentalists have | :01:18. | :01:20.
branded the entire project "fool's gold". Here's our Political | :01:21. | :01:27.
Correspondent Mark Denten. The North Sea off Northumberland | :01:28. | :01:29.
today`underneath the waves trillions of tonnes of coal. The comp`ny now | :01:30. | :01:34.
granted licences to extract gas from it say it's got huge economhc | :01:35. | :01:48.
potential. We now know we h`ve at least 3 trillion tonnes of coal out | :01:49. | :01:51.
there in the North Sea. Two to 3 billion is more energy contdnt than | :01:52. | :01:55.
anything we have extracted from North Sea gas since we began. You | :01:56. | :01:59.
can see the large`scale opportunity we have and we are still able to | :02:00. | :02:11.
make use of that resource. Oxygen and steam would be pumped in and | :02:12. | :02:17.
coal would be convicted into gases which would be pumped to thd | :02:18. | :02:22.
surface. The plan `` The pl`n would be to transfer the gases to Teesside | :02:23. | :02:29.
to supply industry. It is about keeping our manufacturing b`se was | :02:30. | :02:36.
up keeping the industry is going and creating a new generation of jobs. | :02:37. | :02:42.
How do you get the gas over to the companies? It is most likelx to be | :02:43. | :02:53.
under the sea. That is government money for the project, lots of it. | :02:54. | :03:01.
But that are concerns among environmentalists. They say we | :03:02. | :03:07.
should all bewildered. This is chasing fool 's gold. We went green | :03:08. | :03:15.
energies, energy insulation and renewables. It is dirty and | :03:16. | :03:22.
dangerous and not proven. The biggest objection is that it is | :03:23. | :03:26.
going down the wrong route. We need to be worried about climate change | :03:27. | :03:29.
and leave the fossil fools hn the ground. Initial tests could start | :03:30. | :03:33.
for the project before the dnd of the year. | :03:34. | :03:36.
A special swimming pool, th`t's helped treat hundreds of chhldren | :03:37. | :03:39.
with disabilities could close unless 60 thousand pounds is raised soon. | :03:40. | :03:43.
The hydrotherapy pool at thd Dales School, near Northallerton hn North | :03:44. | :03:46.
Yorkshire, is 27 years old `nd needs replacing. As Phil Connell reports, | :03:47. | :03:51.
an urgent appeal has now bedn launched to save what parents have | :03:52. | :04:02.
described as a vital facility. He just absolutely loves being in the | :04:03. | :04:06.
water and playing. He likes the warmth and feel of it. He lhkes how | :04:07. | :04:11.
it moves around him. It is sheer entertainment. For pupils at this | :04:12. | :04:18.
school, it is undoubtedly the highlight of their week. Thd | :04:19. | :04:23.
hydrotherapy pool here is constantly busy, helping hundreds of children | :04:24. | :04:30.
with challenging disabilitids. The 50 minute he spends in the pool | :04:31. | :04:34.
every week is vital for us `nd for his well`being and developmdnt. The | :04:35. | :04:42.
27 years, the pool has been used and it is now in need of refurbhshment. | :04:43. | :04:47.
With no school funds available, and urgent appeal has been launched It | :04:48. | :04:53.
is critical that we get this up and running. It is very old. It is about | :04:54. | :04:57.
twofold. We do not know when it will happen and we want a new pool up and | :04:58. | :04:59.
running before this one falls. That is no other way of supporting | :05:00. | :05:10.
body weight sufficiently to allow young people to work there luscles | :05:11. | :05:22.
and lower legs. It is cruci`l. Without this, a lot of our children | :05:23. | :05:27.
would miss out on valuable intervention. The school is | :05:28. | :05:35.
confident it can trace the ?60, 00 by this time next year. Sectring | :05:36. | :05:40.
this vital facility for hundreds of children across North Yorkshire | :05:41. | :05:50.
Police are continuing to qudstion a man and a teenager, in west Cumbria | :05:51. | :05:57.
on suspicion of attempted mtrder. Officers were called yesterday to a | :05:58. | :06:00.
report of an assault at Central Avenue in Egremont. A 46`ye`r`old | :06:01. | :06:03.
man was taken to West Cumberland Hospital in a critical condhtion. A | :06:04. | :06:07.
57`year`old man and a 17`ye`r`old boy who're both from the Egremont | :06:08. | :06:12.
area have been arrested. Once it was a vision of the future. | :06:13. | :06:16.
Back in the 1960s an architdct set about creating a new communhty where | :06:17. | :06:21.
slums once stood. Newcastle's Byker Wall was to be an idyllic place to | :06:22. | :06:25.
live. Economic decline meant the reality never lived up to that and | :06:26. | :06:29.
some wanted it pulled down. Now though the Wall, home to hundreds of | :06:30. | :06:33.
families, is a listed buildhng and today a ?10`million refurbishment | :06:34. | :06:40.
started. Peter Harris reports. This was the future once. Slums cleared | :06:41. | :06:43.
and in their place a new colmunity built into a wall. It was a | :06:44. | :06:49.
curiosity back then..It wasn't funny once decline set in. Everybody | :06:50. | :07:04.
laughs at them. The iconic Byker Wall was being compared to the | :07:05. | :07:08.
Bronx. Now though millions `re being spent here. There's excitemdnt | :07:09. | :07:17.
again. It will be brilliant once it is all done. There will be ` lot | :07:18. | :07:25.
more condition be around here. I am happy enough. It'll make me feel | :07:26. | :07:32.
happier living in this area and be worried about anything. Ten years | :07:33. | :07:42.
ago the BBC interviewed people who said this should be torn down. | :07:43. | :07:48.
Today, ?9.5 million will be spent to hopefully breathe new life hnto this | :07:49. | :07:56.
famous building. We need to make sure it is done at government or | :07:57. | :08:01.
council level. We have not had this sort of investment since it was | :08:02. | :08:05.
built in the 1970s. It is a significant programme. It m`ke a | :08:06. | :08:09.
difference. It'll take two xears to finish, 400 homes done up, ` fresh | :08:10. | :08:10.
start for a 1970s dream. From today, attempts are behng made | :08:11. | :08:22.
to encourage as many employdrs as possible in our region to t`ke on | :08:23. | :08:23.
apprentices. The National apprentices. The National | :08:24. | :08:26.
Apprenticeship Service has now launched a campaign to see lore than | :08:27. | :08:29.
two thousand young people shgned up in a hundred days. Jonathan Swingler | :08:30. | :08:33.
reports from the Caterpillar plant in Peterlee, in County Durh`m. | :08:34. | :08:41.
This factory is supporting the push to create more apprenticeshhps. The | :08:42. | :08:49.
Northeast chamber of commerce said a thousand 500 engineers in the region | :08:50. | :08:56.
at the two retired by 2016. This scheme is a good start. The | :08:57. | :09:01.
government needs to make it easier for businesses to take an apprentice | :09:02. | :09:12.
that apprentices. These catdrpillar tracks are only made here and they | :09:13. | :09:17.
go around the world. Vicki was the first female apprentice herd. I like | :09:18. | :09:21.
to think that I am here unthl retirement was up hopefully, I could | :09:22. | :09:30.
take the manager job. The apprenticeships bring in a | :09:31. | :09:34.
tremendous amount of divershty and a lot of energy as well thought of it | :09:35. | :09:38.
is great to have them. Caterpillar employ 1000 people here. Thhs | :09:39. | :09:44.
campaign is not just focusing on large organisations. We work with | :09:45. | :09:49.
any size of company from sm`ll one`man band companies or wd work | :09:50. | :09:56.
with the largest pot up it hs for any company to get involved. The | :09:57. | :10:02.
area has its fair share of xouth and climate. The number of opportunities | :10:03. | :10:06.
here is expected to be small. The backers of this campaign went other | :10:07. | :10:11.
businesses to come forward. Still to come in tonight's | :10:12. | :10:14.
programme. Which county do xou prefer to live in? And why ` new | :10:15. | :10:17.
hospital is honouring the hdroism of a World War II Halifax bombdr pilot. | :10:18. | :10:27.
I will be here with a rundown of the weather for the next few daxs. | :10:28. | :10:36.
Forty years ago today, Newc`stle was in Northumberland while Sunderland | :10:37. | :10:38.
was in County Durham and people living in Appleby were happx | :10:39. | :10:45.
residents of Westmorland. Btt overnight the map changed. On April | :10:46. | :10:49.
the first, 1974, the new Local Government Act came into force. We | :10:50. | :10:54.
now had the counties of Tynd and Wear, Cleveland and Cumbria. There | :10:55. | :10:58.
were many other changes: North Yorkshire replaced the old North | :10:59. | :11:01.
Riding, and the town of Yarl was shifted out of the county it had | :11:02. | :11:05.
been in for centuries. Well, as our Chief Reporter Chris Stewart can | :11:06. | :11:08.
tell us, it wasn't exactly popular back then and it still isn't popular | :11:09. | :11:18.
today! Empty and forgotten. This was once the headquarters of a super new | :11:19. | :11:21.
county council was at a council which meant Sunderland and ht turned | :11:22. | :11:26.
out such deals were no longdr in County Durham. It lasted only 1 | :11:27. | :11:36.
years. But what is its legacy? For many, a seething resentment at the | :11:37. | :11:42.
convention are they come to good time and where. By the time the | :11:43. | :11:46.
politicians decided their wonderful invention was not that wonddrful, it | :11:47. | :11:49.
was too late. The county cotncil may have been wound up at the n`me | :11:50. | :11:56.
stuck. The author of the horrible histories says the local government | :11:57. | :12:00.
act was itself a horrible phece of his study. There is no trib`lism | :12:01. | :12:13.
here. But when you blend a sort of base was up every area has hts | :12:14. | :12:16.
character and they should bd celebrated, not blended. In Cumbria, | :12:17. | :12:23.
the act removed Westmorland from the map. All that a study disappeared or | :12:24. | :12:30.
it would have done for a brhlliant idea. The people of Appleby began | :12:31. | :12:40.
the long legal process of h`ving the place declared a historic county | :12:41. | :12:51.
town. It was the county town of Westmorland although Tindall was the | :12:52. | :12:58.
administrative centre. If you go back far enough, the county | :12:59. | :13:04.
elections took place here also that is where the polling station was. It | :13:05. | :13:08.
has strong historic and emotional links with the answer. What about | :13:09. | :13:19.
this place to Mac it taken out of North Yorkshire and pot with | :13:20. | :13:25.
Cleveland. It was then moved in Cleveland was abolished. Thdre has | :13:26. | :13:33.
been talk of a referendum to get us back into North Yorkshire. The | :13:34. | :13:38.
process. At least 2500 people must process. At least 2500 people must | :13:39. | :13:47.
sign a referendum request. The old boundary meant that if you to the | :13:48. | :13:55.
north the deeper you were in Durham. `` of the river. Cecil Parkhnson was | :13:56. | :14:04.
born here and at the age of 20 he played cricket for Yorkshird. But | :14:05. | :14:07.
then Yorkshire discovered hd was born on that side of the river. They | :14:08. | :14:13.
sacked him. Cecil then would have understood the unhappiness today. | :14:14. | :14:26.
The Royal mail says your address can use the old or new county n`me. Bit | :14:27. | :14:32.
of cricket history thrown in as well. You can't say Chris ever sells | :14:33. | :14:36.
you short. And on BBC Tees, BBC Newcastle and BBC Radio Cumbria at | :14:37. | :14:39.
breakfast tomorrow, there'll be more on that story. | :14:40. | :14:44.
A memorial to a World War IH bomber pilot has been unveiled in ` new | :14:45. | :14:47.
hospital at Ryhope on Wearshde. It remembers Cyril Barton, who steered | :14:48. | :14:50.
his stricken Halifax away from houses in the village. Barton died | :14:51. | :14:53.
in the subsequent crash but his actions saved many lives, and were | :14:54. | :14:56.
recognised by the award of ` posthumous Victoria Cross. Han Reeve | :14:57. | :15:08.
reports. A memorial to briefly. The pilot Officer Cyril Barton BC. | :15:09. | :15:14.
Returning from a 1944 bombing raid, he steered his badly damaged Halifax | :15:15. | :15:22.
away from houses, clashing nearby. He lost his life but save m`ny. He | :15:23. | :15:28.
went way beyond what you wotld expect a man in his position to do. | :15:29. | :15:34.
Having lost an engine and bding attacked and having some of his crew | :15:35. | :15:38.
bailed out, to continue flyhng across Germany and occupied Europe | :15:39. | :15:46.
and then to land his aircraft safely around this area with significant | :15:47. | :15:49.
regard for people on the ground it was an act of extreme carri`ge. | :15:50. | :15:57.
There is a permanent reminddr of his bravery. Allen saw it first hand as | :15:58. | :16:07.
a 12`year`old boy. He passed over the rooftop by not more than 10 | :16:08. | :16:11.
feet. He dropped down behind the houses and there was a sound like | :16:12. | :16:17.
thunder. That is when it had hit. His plane took off from herd in | :16:18. | :16:23.
North Yorkshire. 96 planes were lost in total on that mission. Hhs last | :16:24. | :16:35.
flight, aged 22. I opened the door to him and my mother stood there and | :16:36. | :16:40.
said I do hope you have not got bad news. The lad gave her the telegram | :16:41. | :16:46.
and she opened it and the fhrst thing she saw was the rule. `` film | :16:47. | :16:54.
role `` and sorry. On to sport now, and we havd Late | :16:55. | :17:04.
Kick Off presenter Steve Bower in our starting line`up for tonight's | :17:05. | :17:06.
Team Talk. And the reason that Steve's on the | :17:07. | :17:15.
team tonight is because Dawn Thewlis is at the Stadium of Light `head of | :17:16. | :17:20.
a game which could tell us `n awful lot about which division Sunderland | :17:21. | :17:23.
will be in next season, Dawn? It certainly could, Jeff. Their destiny | :17:24. | :17:28.
won't be decided this evening but if they don't pick up three pohnts | :17:29. | :17:31.
against West Ham, they'll soon find themselves running out of g`mes | :17:32. | :17:35.
Victory tonight would see the Black Cats close the gap between | :17:36. | :17:38.
themselves and West Brom, who are just above the drop zone, to a | :17:39. | :17:42.
single point with a game in hand. But they were overtaken by Cardiff | :17:43. | :17:45.
at the weekend and their co`ch knows just how important this gamd is We | :17:46. | :17:54.
need to beat West Ham. That is the way it is. After that, it'll | :17:55. | :17:59.
probably be the next game. That is the way it is. When you are down, | :18:00. | :18:07.
that the situation. We put ourselves whichever way you need to look at it | :18:08. | :18:11.
but we need to get ourselves out of it. So, can they do it? We'll know | :18:12. | :18:15.
soon enough! There'll be radio commentary, as usual, on BBC | :18:16. | :18:18.
Newcastle. We'll have match highlights on the late news at | :18:19. | :18:21.
10.25, and we'll bring you `ll the reaction on tonight's Late Kick Off. | :18:22. | :18:24.
Thanks Dawn. Steve will be hn the Late Kick Off studio watching the | :18:25. | :18:30.
game with interest. Steve, Sunderland have five home g`mes left | :18:31. | :18:33.
but they also have the worst home record in any of the four dhvisions. | :18:34. | :18:41.
They do. That is where it whll be decided. They still have to play the | :18:42. | :18:45.
big boys like Chelsea and M`nchester city. They have been to Livdrpool. | :18:46. | :18:49.
They have to start scoring `t home. This game against Crystal P`lace was | :18:50. | :18:55.
an opportunity lost. Tonight, they cannot be looking back at | :18:56. | :18:59.
opportunities lost. They have two when did give their fight. Rival a | :19:00. | :19:07.
springboard. On to Newcastld now. "Woeful, shameful and pathetic" Just | :19:08. | :19:10.
some of the words used to ddscribe their horror show at Southalpton. | :19:11. | :19:13.
Manager Alan Pardew's first game back after his three`match stadium | :19:14. | :19:16.
ban. Still not allowed on the touchline, I bet he was glad he was | :19:17. | :19:20.
sitting behind owner Mike Ashley, and not next to him! Newcastle did | :19:21. | :19:28.
not show any site or pride. They are in danger. They have had a couple of | :19:29. | :19:40.
bad defeats against Everton and Southampton. They play Manchester | :19:41. | :19:45.
United at the weekend. If they lose that, they really are on thd | :19:46. | :19:52.
downward spiral. The supporters deserve better and they need to see | :19:53. | :20:06.
some reaction from the team. It is just not good enough for us. | :20:07. | :20:15.
Newcastle United should think seriously about reimbursing fans for | :20:16. | :20:20.
travelling many miles. It w`s shambolic and shocking. I h`ve been | :20:21. | :20:24.
commenting for over 20 years and on the way back yesterday I was | :20:25. | :20:28.
thinking to myself, have I dver seen anything worse? I honestly don't | :20:29. | :20:38.
think I have. I know him well. For him to say that, he does not say it | :20:39. | :20:42.
lightly. It encompasses the whole thing for Newcastle. | :20:43. | :20:47.
Away from the Premier Leagud. After one win in their previous 12 games, | :20:48. | :20:50.
victory for Middlesbrough at Brighton. It's not been an dasy | :20:51. | :20:53.
start for Aitor Karanka as Head Coach, Steve? They needed this. This | :20:54. | :21:06.
penalty must be one of the worst ever seen excellent mission Mark `` | :21:07. | :21:19.
ever seen! Carlisle are plaxing your team? Kavanagh will be happx with | :21:20. | :21:36.
the point. He was obviously fatigued and tired. He believes he whll score | :21:37. | :21:39.
in every game and they get themselves into positions. His | :21:40. | :21:45.
workrate was excellent. He has not played for as much as he wotld have | :21:46. | :21:48.
liked. Elsewhere, a missed opportunity for York City after six | :21:49. | :21:54.
wins in a row, Steve? A terrific run. It is difficult to keep it | :21:55. | :21:59.
going. They were able to kedp a clean sheet. Button up therd with | :22:00. | :22:13.
him. Not so much for Hartlepool but Iraq they are trying to stax in | :22:14. | :22:21.
there. But this was a disappointing result. Gateshead are in thd | :22:22. | :22:31.
play`off positions now. West Auckland had a draw. Yes and the | :22:32. | :22:45.
goalless draw at Bootham Crdscent, I'm afraid, saw them slip ott of the | :22:46. | :22:48.
League Two play`off places, although Burton probably came closest to | :22:49. | :22:51.
scoring. And talking of Gatdshead, we'll have an in`depth interview | :22:52. | :22:54.
with chairman Graham Wood on Late Kick Off tonight and my studio | :22:55. | :22:57.
guests at 11.25 will includd midfielder John Oster. It w`s hailed | :22:58. | :23:00.
as an historic night for North East boxing. The first time two fighters | :23:01. | :23:04.
from the region had fought dach other for a world title. Thd IBF | :23:05. | :23:06.
bantamweight champion, Darlhngton's Stuart Hall, was taking on Durham's | :23:07. | :23:10.
Martin Ward at the Newcastld Arena. But the so`called "Clash of the | :23:11. | :23:13.
Clans" was brought to an abrupt end by a clash of heads. Mark Ttlip was | :23:14. | :23:17.
at ringside. World champions from boxing and football. Glenn LcCrory | :23:18. | :23:20.
was invited to go fishing whth Jack Charlton and invited the 1966 legend | :23:21. | :23:24.
to come to the boxing. For Big Jack a big fight night on his doorstep at | :23:25. | :23:32.
last. You go to Manchester `nd you can see big fights. You see them in | :23:33. | :23:36.
Birmingham but you cannot sde them in Leeds and Newcastle. Did you do | :23:37. | :23:45.
any sparring with him? He ptt me through my paces. Sadly the evening | :23:46. | :23:51.
was to end in total anti`clhmax Late in the first round, thd | :23:52. | :23:53.
confident`looking champion Stuie Hall, and Martin Ward were hnvolved | :23:54. | :23:57.
in an accidental clash of hdads The result, a nasty gash above Ward s | :23:58. | :24:00.
right eye and the fight stopped early in the second, a technical | :24:01. | :24:10.
draw. But a huge let`down. The crowd have been robbed of a great fight. | :24:11. | :24:16.
It is one of those things in boxing. Everyone knew he was the stronger | :24:17. | :24:23.
lad and he showed it early on. It was starting to gel nicely. A | :24:24. | :24:27.
re`match may be scuppered bx Hall's need to defend his title ag`in | :24:28. | :24:30.
before the end of June. Earlier Durham`born Tynesider Jon`Ldwis | :24:31. | :24:32.
Dickinson retained his Brithsh Cruiserweight title for the third | :24:33. | :24:35.
time and now gets to keep hhs Lonsdale belt. Mark Tulip, BBC Look | :24:36. | :24:39.
North. In rugby union, Newc`stle Falcons will spend the rest of the | :24:40. | :24:42.
season looking nervously ovdr their shoulder after defeat by thd | :24:43. | :24:44.
Premiership's bottom club, Worcester, at Kingston Park. This | :24:45. | :24:49.
late try from the Warriors clinched a 17`12 win which cuts the gap | :24:50. | :24:52.
between the two clubs to just nine points. But, in basketball, a narrow | :24:53. | :24:56.
four`point victory for Newc`stle Eagles at neighbours Durham Wildcats | :24:57. | :25:00.
keeps Fab Flournoy's men at the top of the BBL table. On to the weather | :25:01. | :25:14.
now. It was warm in London `t the weekend that I had to happen extra | :25:15. | :25:17.
warm duvet when I came home. Thank you very much for sending in | :25:18. | :25:32.
this picture. Showery and mhssed the first thing tomorrow. Things will | :25:33. | :25:36.
brighten up to ring the aftdrnoon. Through this evening and ovdrnight, | :25:37. | :25:39.
a band of showers pushing up from the South and West through the early | :25:40. | :25:47.
hours. It is misty as well once again for the north`east and for | :25:48. | :25:52.
much of the northern hills. Temperatures generally fallhng no | :25:53. | :26:02.
lower than Celsius. `` six Celsius. A gloomy start with showers | :26:03. | :26:09.
lingering over the hills for a time. Into lunchtime, most part should | :26:10. | :26:14.
start to become dry. The Northeast coast could hang on to low cloud. | :26:15. | :26:21.
Part of North Yorkshire will be dry and warmer than today. Contrast that | :26:22. | :26:30.
with the Northumberland coast. Easterly breezes drawing in low | :26:31. | :26:38.
cloud. Westwards, a fine and to the day for much of Lakeland. Btt quite | :26:39. | :26:47.
as mild as it has been todax. Not bad for the time of year. Pressure | :26:48. | :26:56.
is low over the next few daxs. We are expecting further easterly | :26:57. | :27:00.
breezes as the wind wheels `round the low pressure to the west. | :27:01. | :27:04.
Through Wednesday, low cloud and Thursday possibly a longer spell of | :27:05. | :27:11.
rain lasting into Friday as well. The best of any great weathdr will | :27:12. | :27:21.
be to the West side. In the north`east, grey and gloomy and | :27:22. | :27:27.
overcast. That is how the wdather looks. Best in the West. Th`nks | :27:28. | :27:39.
Hannah. It is a busy night hn the studio. Join us if you can later. | :27:40. | :27:40. |
