Good evening. Army reservists have marched through Darlington town

centre to mark the 37th anniversary of being given the freedom of the

Borough. Hundreds watched the soldiers from the 50th Signal

Squadron ` which is made up of local volunteers ` which provides support

to the regular armed forces and can trace its history back to the First

World War. We have lads who have been on operations in Afghanistan,

we have lads who have been on operations in other parts of the

world, and to have the support of our local community and who we draw

a recruitment from, that is an incalculable thing. As we marched on

with the people applauding and cheering, there was a lot of swagger

in the lads' step. Fantastic. One of Cumbria's leading climbers is

heading home after calling off his latest Everest expedition. Tim

Mosedale from Keswick has made the summit four times. He described the

situation following the avalanche which killed 16 sherpas as "an awful

tragedy that has been sidetracked in to a different agenda". The

mountain's been closed and he blames militants among those involved.

Rehearsals are under way for a world premiere of a new choral work

celebrating the rich traditions and stories of the North East. It's by

Newcastle composer Will Lang will be performed at Durham Cathedral in two

weeks' time. Phil Chapman reports. This ambitious new work covers

north`east traditions in four pass, C, home, land and minds. `` sea,

home, land and mines. The choir have been busy rehearsing with piano

accompaniment, but the full performance will feature a full

orchestra and some well`known names from the region. We have three clog

dancers from the north`east who live in Newcastle, we have most

importantly, Durham Choral Society, who will be singing with us. And the

strong traditions of the north`east are rubbing off on some of the

newcomers to the region. I have been in the north`east for 4.5 years, I

teach at a school in the North East, and for me, there is such a vibrant

cultural tradition here that does not was mixed with the choral

society traditions, so it is very exciting. The Azores been a

tradition in the north`east, but not much crossover between the classical

tradition and the folk tradition, so it is nice to be able to bridge that

gap. And the glorious heritage concert happens in these glorious

surroundings on May the 10th, in Durham Cathedral. People flocked to

a North Yorkshire town today to mark St George's Day and Shakespeare's

450th birthday. The "Sonnets and Serpents" festival at Knaresborough

Castle is the biggest community event ever to be held in the North

Yorkshire town. Organisers were proud to give St George a boost,

after news that fewer people than ever are celebrating his big day.

Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou, Romeo? It is troubling to bring St

George back into this lovely family environment, and it would not be the

same without our fabulous Shakespeare. We have got some great

actors here. Football now, and if don't want to know the scores ` you

know what to do! In the Championship ` Middlesbrough finished their final

home game of the season in style, beating Barnsley 3`1. In League One,

Carlisle's hopes of avoiding relegation suffered a blow as they

were beaten by Oldham 1`0. In League Two, York City guaranteed their

place in the play offs with a 1`0 victory over Newport. And Hartlepool

drew 1`1 away at Plymouth. Gateshead Utd v Cambridge Utd match is still

under way. Gateshead are currently leading 1`0. Now it's time for the

weather with Jennifer Bartram. Good evening. It is looking drier as

we head into this evening. It is going to be a mainly cloudy picture

with the cloud coming in from the North Sea. Temperatures falling back

to around eight Celsius overnight. Sunday will be wet at times during

the morning. A few showers around, some of those on the heavy side, but

we should see some sunny spells by the afternoon with temperatures

the British Isles for this weekend. There have been a number of showers

today, particularly in the south-west, and there is more to

come overnight. You can see this swirl of cloud, the centre of it in
