at night. There is frost on the way. Thank you very much. Goodbye from | :00:00. | 3:59:59
me. And Hello and welcome to Tuesday's Look | :00:00. | :00:00.
North. Tonight... | :00:00. | :00:08.
Another shocking health statistic. More than half of people in the | :00:09. | :00:11.
North East are overweight, according to a new survey, and a quarter are | :00:12. | :00:21.
obese. I passed a wheelchair sitting in the corridor which was twice as | :00:22. | :00:29.
wide as a standard wheelchair. I actually took a picture of it. | :00:30. | :00:33.
Could the Durham Miners' Gala be under threat, following a ?2 million | :00:34. | :00:35.
court case? Facing eviction ` the collector of | :00:36. | :00:38.
farm machines and engines, at odds with his local council. | :00:39. | :00:42.
And it is the end of an era, as this herd of alpacas heads to the auction | :00:43. | :00:44.
house. And in football, could it be the end | :00:45. | :00:48.
of the road for Carlisle United in League One? They will be relegated | :00:49. | :00:52.
if they lose at Crawley tonight. And the pressure builds on Newcastle | :00:53. | :00:55.
boss Alan Pardew, as the Magpies slump to their sixth defeat in a | :00:56. | :00:57.
row. More than half of people in the | :00:58. | :01:13.
North East are overweight and many are in denial about it. That is the | :01:14. | :01:20.
conclusion of the latest national survey on the state of our health. | :01:21. | :01:25.
It concludes that 56% of people are too heavy and 26% are said to obese. | :01:26. | :01:29.
That is based on the Body Mass Index, or BMI, calculation, which | :01:30. | :01:31.
compares your weight with your height. The obesity level here is | :01:32. | :01:35.
the highest in the UK. Our reporter Stephanie Cleasby has been looking | :01:36. | :01:38.
at the figures and has been out on the streets of Newcastle to gauge | :01:39. | :01:47.
reaction. Another report puts the North East 's waistline under the | :01:48. | :01:51.
spotlight. Most people work out their weight by setting one scales, | :01:52. | :01:58.
but doctors rely on a more scientific formula called the body | :01:59. | :02:02.
mass index. We have been asking people if they know the body mass | :02:03. | :02:12.
index. 25 more means you are overweight and above 50 is | :02:13. | :02:17.
classified as obese. That gives us 27.9. I could do something about | :02:18. | :02:27.
that. I did not think I was overweight. I am 76 years old. I | :02:28. | :02:43.
need to do something about that. I could rectify that, as long as I am | :02:44. | :02:52.
not obese. You are 24, you come within the health limits. That is | :02:53. | :03:00.
good news. It is good for your heart. I will be we are now more | :03:01. | :03:07.
that you have mentioned it. I want to be healthy, as well as slim. | :03:08. | :03:15.
29.4. Are you surprised to be that high? Do you lead a healthy | :03:16. | :03:23.
lifestyle? Not actually, I work in a restaurant. I had better watch my | :03:24. | :03:33.
weight. I feel one of the lucky ones others, because I like healthy food, | :03:34. | :03:39.
I like walking on like this sea and meeting people. More than half the | :03:40. | :03:46.
people in the region in denial about the state the health. They are | :03:47. | :03:50.
unaware of the potential health risks. I saw a real cheer on the | :03:51. | :03:58.
corridor that was twice as wide as the standard wheelchair. It was so | :03:59. | :04:02.
striking that I took my camera and took a picture of it. The body mass | :04:03. | :04:07.
index of the entire population has gone up. Two thirds of people are | :04:08. | :04:15.
either overweight or obese, and in other words, more than half. It has | :04:16. | :04:21.
become average to become too heavy. And Steph joins me in the studio | :04:22. | :04:25.
now. So, the North East is still one of the worst, if not the worst, | :04:26. | :04:29.
region in the country for obesity and many people are in denial about | :04:30. | :04:37.
the state of their health? 56% of people who are rated as overweight | :04:38. | :04:42.
CVR in excellent health, which shows a degree of denial. Overall health | :04:43. | :04:51.
problems related to overweight this or obesity cost millions of pounds | :04:52. | :05:00.
each year. We have never been as fat as we are now. The body mass index | :05:01. | :05:09.
is a general guide to dividing weight by eight. If it is over 25, | :05:10. | :05:15.
you should go and see your doctor, to see if there is anything you | :05:16. | :05:18.
should do to get that down. And you can have your say on that | :05:19. | :05:22.
story by visiting the Look North Facebook page. The details are on | :05:23. | :05:25.
your screen now... It is an event that has been | :05:26. | :05:28.
embedded into the region's industrial heritage for 140 years, | :05:29. | :05:31.
but could the Durham Miners' Gala disappear from the summer calendar? | :05:32. | :05:34.
Miners' leaders say it could be at risk, after their lawyers lost a | :05:35. | :05:38.
court case costing more than ?2 million. The Durham Miners' | :05:39. | :05:43.
Association says it will now have to ask its trade union partners to help | :05:44. | :05:48.
save the Gala. Gerry Jackson is in the city tonight. Gerry, the very | :05:49. | :05:53.
thought of this will come as a shock to a lot of people? This is the | :05:54. | :06:05.
racecourse, the culmination of many of the events. The question is, how | :06:06. | :06:10.
much longer will it remain? For generations, every second | :06:11. | :06:18.
Saturday in July, they have come in their tens of thousands, but there | :06:19. | :06:22.
is a chance that, like the pits themselves, this, too, could pass | :06:23. | :06:27.
into history. The Gala costs ?100,000 a year, much | :06:28. | :06:31.
of that being raised by the public, but the Durham Miner's Association | :06:32. | :06:33.
subsidises the branches that travel from far and wide. Each band that | :06:34. | :06:51.
comes to the gal gets ?600. They have got to pay transport costs out | :06:52. | :06:56.
of that. You get maybe bands coming from Lancashire or Yorkshire. | :06:57. | :07:00.
The Durham Miners were fighting a compensation case on behalf of | :07:01. | :07:02.
members now suffering from osteoarthritis of the knees. They | :07:03. | :07:06.
lost and faced a bill of ?2.2 million. They still owe around one | :07:07. | :07:14.
third of that. There have got to be some harsh decisions made. We are | :07:15. | :07:20.
very proud of representing Maynards and families outrun tribunal. They | :07:21. | :07:26.
need our help and support. But should the Gala be at risk while | :07:27. | :07:30.
the miners have assets like their grand Durham headquarters? In the | :07:31. | :07:39.
1990s, this building was put up as collateral in a court case they were | :07:40. | :07:43.
fighting. They say there is no need to do that this time. It is our job | :07:44. | :07:53.
to make sure the gal continues. But do you need to have this building? | :07:54. | :07:59.
That is being looked at. We have had the talk over the last few years. We | :08:00. | :08:16.
will be having talks with whoever. God forbid that, but we have to | :08:17. | :08:21.
vacate this place to ensure the survival of the Maynards | :08:22. | :08:24.
Association, we will do it. Time marches on and bills must be | :08:25. | :08:28.
paid. But the DMA says it is confident its friends in the trade | :08:29. | :08:32.
unions will want to show their support. They, too, it is hoped, | :08:33. | :08:36.
will find the idea of an end to all of this unthinkable. So, the | :08:37. | :08:47.
messages it is not just about the remaining heritage, but the whole | :08:48. | :08:55.
labour movement. The Durham Miners' Gala is the centrepiece of that in | :08:56. | :08:59.
the North East. The upshot is that members will have to put their hands | :09:00. | :09:04.
in their pockets to ensure the survival of the event. | :09:05. | :09:08.
The search is continuing for a man who has been missing in Ravenglass | :09:09. | :09:12.
in Cumbria since yesterday morning. John Allen, who is 76, was last seen | :09:13. | :09:15.
walking into the estuary at Ravenglass along with his dog. | :09:16. | :09:19.
Police say they do not believe he was swimming, but he may have been | :09:20. | :09:23.
trying to help his dog from the water. The dog reappeared, but Mr | :09:24. | :09:27.
Allen has not been seen since. And a dog from Newcastle, who was | :09:28. | :09:30.
killed in Afghanistan alongside her handler, is to be awarded the | :09:31. | :09:33.
highest military honour for an animal. Sasha will be given the | :09:34. | :09:36.
PDSA's Dickin Medal, for saving the lives of scores of soldiers and | :09:37. | :09:39.
civilians by sniffing out IEDs and other hidden weaponry. She died, | :09:40. | :09:44.
along with Lance Corporal Kenneth Rowe, in July, 2008, when their | :09:45. | :09:50.
routine patrol was ambushed. Now, his supporters would say it is | :09:51. | :09:53.
an Aladdin's cave of heavy engineering, but if you listen to | :09:54. | :09:57.
the local council, it is just too much metal, a lot of it is rusting | :09:58. | :10:01.
and, worse still, it is in the wrong place. Husky Petch, who has built up | :10:02. | :10:08.
a collection of engines and farm vehicles, is now facing eviction in | :10:09. | :10:17.
a row with his local authority. This engine is called the Blackstone. He | :10:18. | :10:25.
is one of life 's unforgettable characters. He has a passion for | :10:26. | :10:32.
engines, farm machinery. For the past 15 years, his collection has | :10:33. | :10:38.
grown on this piece of land owned by the council. No, the authority wants | :10:39. | :10:42.
it back and on Thursday, has threatened to Husky Petch evict and | :10:43. | :10:48.
remove the hundreds of items he has gathered over the years. Things like | :10:49. | :11:03.
this, this is an interesting thing. I have never seen one before. It is | :11:04. | :11:11.
the same as everything in here. Husky Petch is a well`known | :11:12. | :11:19.
character and his collection is true. Many locals have promised | :11:20. | :11:23.
their support and will be here if the bailiffs a lot arrive on the | :11:24. | :11:31.
first of next month. He has done so much for the local community. So | :11:32. | :11:34.
many people love him. This is his life. The collection he has got is a | :11:35. | :11:43.
collection of her study. It is devastating. I do not have | :11:44. | :11:47.
television or radio. This is all that I do. I do not know what I read | :11:48. | :11:56.
two of the bailiffs came into control away. I really do not know. | :11:57. | :12:06.
Husky Petch is the living illegally on the site to safeguard the | :12:07. | :12:10.
collection. The leader of Redcar Cleveland | :12:11. | :12:13.
Council, George Dunning, issued a statement earlier today, which said: | :12:14. | :12:16.
"Mr Petch is being evicted because he is illegally occupying a business | :12:17. | :12:20.
premises and there are concerns for the structure of the buildings and | :12:21. | :12:22.
his safety. The council is left with no other | :12:23. | :12:25.
option, after trying for many years to reach a mutually agreeable | :12:26. | :12:29.
outcome. He has occupied the site on a peppercorn rate since 2008, | :12:30. | :12:31.
declined the offer of two alternative sites and refused to | :12:32. | :12:34.
cooperate with court orders, thereby forcing the situation." | :12:35. | :12:50.
The leader of the Green Party has promised to give the region a fairer | :12:51. | :12:57.
deal on arts funding. At the moment, people in London receive nearly four | :12:58. | :13:01.
times the amount spent on the arts than those in the North East. | :13:02. | :13:06.
Natalie Bennett was speaking at the Sage Gateshead, ahead of the | :13:07. | :13:08.
European and local elections next month. | :13:09. | :13:10.
Everyone Deserves Music ` perhaps an unusual slogan at election time, but | :13:11. | :13:13.
here is a politician arguing for arts funding. Natalie Bennett, the | :13:14. | :13:16.
Green Party leader, condemned what she called the "slashing of arts | :13:17. | :13:24.
budgets". We have seen a huge concentration on the arts in London | :13:25. | :13:28.
and the south`east. We want to see the funding spread out locally. We | :13:29. | :13:34.
wanted to be given to local communities for them to decide how | :13:35. | :13:36.
it should be distributed. But the Greens would also scrap the | :13:37. | :13:39.
government's welfare cap, so would that not just drain the nation's | :13:40. | :13:50.
coffers? We have to make sure that people are able to feed themselves | :13:51. | :13:59.
and not rely on charity. We will not rest until the last third bank | :14:00. | :14:03.
closes because of lack of demand. The Greens are putting up over 60 | :14:04. | :14:06.
candidates at the local elections on May 22 and full lists of candidates | :14:07. | :14:10.
in the European elections. You can see a full list of | :14:11. | :14:13.
candidates for the European elections on the BBC Politics | :14:14. | :14:16.
website. And, of course, we will be bringing you news from the other | :14:17. | :14:19.
parties, ahead of those May 22 elections. | :14:20. | :14:21.
Still to come, Dawn Thewlis with Tuesday's sport. | :14:22. | :14:23.
And showcasing some of Yorkshire's best`known artists. The exhibition | :14:24. | :14:32.
featuring some rarely`seen work. And after a lovely day for most, join me | :14:33. | :14:36.
later for the latest weather forecast. | :14:37. | :14:42.
When Pat Bentley went to Peru in the 1970s, she fell in love with the | :14:43. | :14:48.
alpaca, with its mop of curly hair and deep brown eyes. Later, she | :14:49. | :14:52.
became one of the first people to farm the animal in this country, on | :14:53. | :14:56.
her Cumbrian small holding. But an era is now coming to an end, as Pat | :14:57. | :15:00.
is retiring. Mark McAlindon went for one last look at her herd. For Pat, | :15:01. | :15:14.
alpacas have been her life. They are believed to be distantly related to | :15:15. | :15:19.
camels. They have given her a sense of well`being. They are very good | :15:20. | :15:24.
for someone who has a stressful job. You can come back and see them being | :15:25. | :15:32.
calm and gentle. It began 50 years ago when she got the first licence | :15:33. | :15:37.
to import them from South America. She then set up a business selling | :15:38. | :15:44.
clothes made of the rule. To describe as an exotic creature is | :15:45. | :15:51.
too damning with faint praise. They were revealed by the end tribes in | :15:52. | :15:59.
South America. It is why Pat is so sad to be saying goodbye. I can be | :16:00. | :16:04.
reduced to tears when I think about it, but it is so much work, but my | :16:05. | :16:11.
loss will be someone else's game. It could be the beginning of a carrier | :16:12. | :16:17.
for someone else. It would be good for someone younger who needs a | :16:18. | :16:23.
future. They're here will go under the hammer next Monday. The animals | :16:24. | :16:30.
will move on and five, but Pat will come home to an empty farm, the end | :16:31. | :16:35.
of an era. The Tour de France is not all about | :16:36. | :16:38.
elite riders and gruelling climbs. In the run up to July and Le Grand | :16:39. | :16:42.
Depart, a cultural event is also taking place. It is called The | :16:43. | :16:48.
Yorkshire Festival and one of the highlights is an exhibition at the | :16:49. | :16:50.
Mercer Gallery in Harrogate, showcasing some of the county's | :16:51. | :16:53.
best`known artists. The collection even features rarely`seen work by | :16:54. | :17:04.
David Hockney. The beauty of Yorkshire 's landscape reportedly | :17:05. | :17:11.
moved the great British painter Turner to tears. This is part of a | :17:12. | :17:19.
new exhibition which demonstrates the influence of Yorkshire. It is a | :17:20. | :17:26.
great draw for the landscape artists, such as tundra. There was a | :17:27. | :17:32.
tremendous diversity of landscape. You have the places where the | :17:33. | :17:36.
industrial revolution began, the fantastic coastline and then you | :17:37. | :17:43.
have got the softness of the days and the countryside and the big | :17:44. | :17:50.
cities. The collection cleverly places past Masters with | :17:51. | :17:55.
contemporary artists. It means Venus old scenes set alongside the likes | :17:56. | :18:12.
of modern art by David Hockney. It is something to be very proud of. It | :18:13. | :18:20.
shows the diversity of the country. It shows how well these artists | :18:21. | :18:26.
stand out. We have not decayed at all. It merely emphasises the | :18:27. | :18:33.
skill. The range of artists are amazing. The work is amazing. I am | :18:34. | :18:43.
really impressed. It is food for the eyes. It is fantastic. The paintings | :18:44. | :18:54.
come to life. It is part of a cultural array of events, head of | :18:55. | :18:56.
the Tour de France. Very nice. Ten for sport. Unlike the | :18:57. | :19:11.
paintings, this is not very nice. The unwanted statistics keep piling | :19:12. | :19:14.
up for Newcastle. Six defeats in a row is their worst run for 27 years. | :19:15. | :19:18.
The Magpies have scored just one goal in the last six and, since they | :19:19. | :19:22.
sold midfielder Yohan Cabaye in January, they have picked up just | :19:23. | :19:25.
nine points from a possible 39. Manager Alan Pardew is a man under | :19:26. | :19:27.
pressure. There is no disgrace in losing at | :19:28. | :19:34.
the Emirates and the odds are that Newcastle will still finish in the | :19:35. | :19:37.
top half of the table. But their collapse since the turn of the year | :19:38. | :19:41.
has been dramatic and left the fans looking for someone to blame. With | :19:42. | :19:44.
owner Mike Ashley staying well out the firing line, that leaves his | :19:45. | :19:51.
manager to take the flak. It is not comfortable. It is a pleasure for | :19:52. | :19:59.
all others. When you have gone six games and have not won a game, the | :20:00. | :20:02.
pressure does build. It has not helped that Pardew had | :20:03. | :20:06.
been serving a ban for headbutting Hull's David Meyler. He hoped his | :20:07. | :20:09.
return to the touchline might make a difference, but all it did was give | :20:10. | :20:13.
him a better view of Arsenal's charge towards the Champions League. | :20:14. | :20:16.
2`0 down at the break, the Magpies did at least avoid a complete | :20:17. | :20:19.
collapse, but Giroud made it three and, having lost their last home | :20:20. | :20:23.
game to Swansea, next up, it is bottom of the table Cardiff at St | :20:24. | :20:25.
James'. The result last week put us under | :20:26. | :20:35.
pressure, the last minute goal which I do not think we deserved. But the | :20:36. | :20:40.
only way to get out of it is to show the character we showed tonight. | :20:41. | :20:45.
Carlisle United will be relegated to League Two tonight if they lose to | :20:46. | :20:49.
Crawley. The Cumbrians will be without their main striker Gary | :20:50. | :20:52.
Madine because a police curfew requires him to be home in the North | :20:53. | :20:56.
East by seven o'clock. Even if Carlisle avoid the drop tonight with | :20:57. | :20:59.
a draw, they will still have to beat league leaders Wolves on the last | :21:00. | :21:03.
day of the season on Saturday to give themselves a chance of staying | :21:04. | :21:06.
up. Whatever the outcome, boss Graham Kavanagh says he thinks he | :21:07. | :21:09.
deserves the chance to continue managing the club. I like to think | :21:10. | :21:19.
that when I took over, we only had half a dozen points and were going | :21:20. | :21:27.
nowhere. We have had a horrendous injury crisis since I took over. The | :21:28. | :21:37.
one thing I have probably liked as a new manager, I put faith and trust | :21:38. | :21:44.
on players that I thought would remain fit. Every player I brought | :21:45. | :21:52.
in on the short`term and we have been scrimping and scraping all the | :21:53. | :21:58.
way through. Another few years in the wilderness. The whole process | :21:59. | :22:06.
starts again. I think they could stay up. It would not be good for | :22:07. | :22:12.
the city, football eyes. BBC Radio Cumbria has commentary of | :22:13. | :22:15.
the match, with James Phillips and Grant Holt starting the build up | :22:16. | :22:17.
from seven o'clock. Newcastle Racecourse has been given | :22:18. | :22:20.
approval to build an all`weather track at High Gosforth Park. The | :22:21. | :22:23.
existing one mile six furlongs turf track at High Gosforth Park will be | :22:24. | :22:26.
converted into an all`weather surface and Newcastle hopes to have | :22:27. | :22:30.
races on the world's only floodlit straight mile. They will be allowed | :22:31. | :22:33.
to apply to host fixtures next year. And in cricket's County | :22:34. | :22:36.
Championship, Yorkshire are in the driving seat at Lord's on day three | :22:37. | :22:43.
of the game. A big century from Gary Ballance helped them set Middlesex a | :22:44. | :22:46.
target of 472 for victory, but Chris Rogers and Sam Robson are leading | :22:47. | :22:50.
the fightback and the home side are currently 159`0. | :22:51. | :22:53.
Now, let us see how the weather is shaping up. | :22:54. | :23:01.
It has cooled down a bit this evening, but it was a lovely day for | :23:02. | :23:07.
many others. Warm sunshine through the middle part of the day meant | :23:08. | :23:13.
some very warm temperatures. The hotspot today was 19 Celsius. But | :23:14. | :23:22.
not everywhere was wrong, with coastal parts especially struggling | :23:23. | :23:29.
with mist and fog. As we head into this evening, there is a bit of | :23:30. | :23:33.
cloud over the odd shower, but they will die away and many places will | :23:34. | :23:40.
have the dry night. Again, low cloud, mist and fog forming, so pure | :23:41. | :23:45.
visibility through the early hours of the morning. But not cold, with a | :23:46. | :23:52.
low temperature of just seven Celsius. A rather get a start | :23:53. | :23:56.
tomorrow, but the low cloud should lift and clear in the morning and we | :23:57. | :24:01.
should again see bright spells developing. The sunny spells will be | :24:02. | :24:11.
mingled with some sharp showers in the afternoon. There could be some | :24:12. | :24:15.
heavy downpours into the late afternoon and evening. Top | :24:16. | :24:30.
temperature of about 17 Celsius. Take a look at the pressure sequence | :24:31. | :24:36.
for Thursday. Whether France producing cloud and rain for most of | :24:37. | :24:41.
us, but it does move away to the south, introducing drier and fresher | :24:42. | :24:43.
weather as we head towards the weekend. I pressure building and I | :24:44. | :24:50.
will stick my neck out as we'll go to the bank holiday weekend, most of | :24:51. | :24:55.
should enjoy a fair bit of dry weather, but it will also be cooler. | :24:56. | :25:00.
Temperatures fresher than they have been of late. That is how it is | :25:01. | :25:10.
looking at the moment. Any changes, we will of course keep them updated. | :25:11. | :25:17.
Can you just hear it there until 10:30pm for the late weather! | :25:18. | :25:21.
And that is Look North for now. We are back with headlines at eight | :25:22. | :25:27.
o'clock and the late bulletin after the national ten o'clock news. Bye | :25:28. | :25:28.
for now. | :25:29. | :25:30. |
