Good evening. Campaigners hoping to gather enough community support to

buy the Lake District mountain Blencathra have held their first

public meeting. The iconic peak is up for sale because its aristocratic

owner faces a large tax bill. Many locals want to buy it and hold it in

trust. Mark McAlindon reports. Within days of launching, the

Friends of Blencathra group has already won the support of

thousands. The question is how best to harness that support and raise

the close on ?2 million to buy Blencathra from Lord Lonsdale. Hence

this afternoon's meeting. We want to take it into Max stages. We need to

buy that mountain for everybody and then we need to look at long`term

future of that mountain. This is not a one trick pony, we have to think

about what is great happen in the next 400, 800 years. It's a race

against time for these campaigners. Bids must be in by July second. Many

have different ideas about how to raise money, how best to use it and

what to do if they should be successful. What they do have in

common though is a love for this most distinctive Lakeland mountain.

I was doing an interview in a pub the other day and somebody offered

me ?1000 they are and then. We were walking up the mountain this

morning. People stopped and offered me money there. Websites and

e`mails, being inundated with, how can we donate? Every direction,

people are offering. Not just now but long term which is the important

thing. Thousands of children, grandparents,

and mums and dads have been battling their way around a muddy running

track at Newcastle Racecourse to throw their support behind the 32nd

Children's Cancer Run. It's an event which has, over the years, raised

nearly ?6.5 million for North East Research into cancers in children.

Starting one of the races today was 15`year`old Kieran Maxwell, who lost

his left leg to cancer, but still went on to complete the mini run on

his prosthetic running blade. It makes me happy that some people know

it is out there, and care about it, not just say, oh, no, they can do it

themselves. It has got nothing to do with us. How many people are here

today, it is amazing. Football, and it was the final day

of the Premier League. Both Newcastle and Sunderland were safe.

Good job really as both lost. The Black Cats were at home to Swansea

but were beaten 3`1 at the Stadium of Light. The Wearsiders' only goal

came from Fabio Borini after 50 minutes. Newcastle, meanwhile, were

at title`chasing Liverpool. The Magpies did lead at half time

through an own goal from Martin Skrtel. But the Reds got two back

after the break and it ended 2`1. All the action in Match of the Day

tonight on BBC One at 10.25pm after our late Look North.

The first leg of York City's League Two play`off semifinal against

Fleetwood was called off last night because of a waterlogged pitch at

Bootham Crescent. Supporters have been told their tickets will be

valid for the rearranged game tomorrow night.

Well, they'd hoped to become our region's latest Wembley heroes but

it all ended in heartbreak for the footballers of West Auckland. Today

fans and the team were back home in County Durham after their brave run

to the final of the FA Vase ended in a 1`0 defeat to south coast team

Sholing. Peter Harris was there. High spirits pre`match. But the

hundreds from the north`east were expecting glory. 10`0. Don't know.

They will have a great time. We will have a wild night, I would have

thought, I hope. West Auckland had an early chance to take the lead,

and Schilling's keeper was destined to be the man of the match. Marvin

McLean's wickedly did `` deflected shot gave them the lead. The game

was almost savaged but `` salvaged but it was not to be. Disappointed

with the result, disappointed we did not win it. Not disappointed with

the performance. The vast majority of the lads performed. You do not

always get what you deserve. We deserved to win. Even though it ends

in heartbreak with West Auckland, a region's winning run in the FA Vase

comes to an end. Basketball, and Newcastle Eagles

have lost the BBL play off final at Wembley Arena this afternoon. Fab

Flournoy's men were beaten by Worcester Wolves 90`78. The Eagles

have already won this year's League Championship and had been hoping for

their second piece of silverware. Cricket, and at Hove, Durham had a

long day in the field as Sussex notched`up 431`5. And at Headingley,

Yorkshire were put into bat by Warwickshire. They finished the day

on 294`6. `` 310`8. Joe Root was the pick of the batsmen, scoring 69.

Good evening. Unsettled as we go through this evening and overnight,

share feeding in from the North West. They will become a bit lighter

overnight. Fairly cloudy, which will mean the temperatures will not fall

down to law. Some sunny spells through Monday, but once again the

showers will be fairly potent. Slow`moving showers with some hail

and thunder in places. Temperatures up to 11 degrees. It looks like it

Good evening. We have still got some very heavy showers out there. For

ors we are finishing the day on a more positive note. Clearer skies to

the south indicating sunshine but the cloud still streaming in further

north. Tomorrow's forecast brings a similar mixture, sunshine and

showers although the winds will start to be lighter. That process

begins through the night tonight. A shattering of showers still

possible. Clearer skies across northern Scotland probably our

lowest temperatures here. For many temperatures will begin Monday

morning at around 8 or 9 degrees already with a few showers around. I

think be drier spells in between, as with the nature of showers, they are

not everywhere all of the time. Cloudy with brighter spells mixed in

across parts of northern England and southern Scotland already with the

potential of one or two to be heavy. On northern Scotland on balance

through the day on Monday while there could be a few showers, a

slight improvement here. But they will start to develop throughout the

afternoon and with lighter winds
