And we speak to the Ashes cricket hero who dealt | :00:42. | :00:45.
She's been missing, feared murdered, for five years. | :00:46. | :00:58.
Claudia Lawrence, the York University chef last seen leaving | :00:59. | :01:03.
But today, a breakthrough ` the police announced that they'd | :01:04. | :01:08.
arrested a man on suspicion of murder. | :01:09. | :01:12.
He's a 59`year`old York man and tonight he was named as | :01:13. | :01:15.
And then this afternoon, another development as it's confirmed | :01:16. | :01:23.
that the hunt for evidence has been extended to a house in North | :01:24. | :01:26.
Indeed, it's been reported that Michael Snelling was arrested | :01:27. | :01:31.
We have live reports from both locations tonight. | :01:32. | :01:35.
And that is the home of the man under arrest? | :01:36. | :01:45.
This is where the focus of that police enquiry lies tonight. This | :01:46. | :01:54.
semidetached house in York. Just half a mile from where Claudia | :01:55. | :02:00.
lived. It is believed to be owned by Michael Snelling, the man arrested | :02:01. | :02:08.
this morning. The property has been boarded up throughout the day. | :02:09. | :02:13.
Forensic teams are searching inside and outside the house. North | :02:14. | :02:19.
Yorkshire police have said this is being seen as a significant leak | :02:20. | :02:21.
through. I am concerned about my daughter. | :02:22. | :02:39.
Her name is Claudia. The 19th of March 2009 was the | :02:40. | :02:46.
beginning of history. Claudia Lawrence failed to arrive at her | :02:47. | :02:53.
work as a chef at York University. It is unusual. For a month, the | :02:54. | :03:00.
police make detailed searches of Claudia's home and the surrounding | :03:01. | :03:06.
area. Her family made heartfelt appeals for her return. But five | :03:07. | :03:10.
weeks after her disappearance, police revealed the think she has | :03:11. | :03:16.
been murdered. Any murder investigation has to prove a day. At | :03:17. | :03:22.
the moment, there is no proof of her death, but we have no proof of her | :03:23. | :03:30.
life. I am investigating this disappearance is one of suspected | :03:31. | :03:34.
murder. The case features several times on Crimewatch. There was a | :03:35. | :03:43.
couple seen arguing on the morning she disappeared, was it relevant? | :03:44. | :03:50.
With the trio seemingly cold, North Yorkshire police launch a review of | :03:51. | :03:57.
the case. Research Claudia's house again. It is revealed that DNA has | :03:58. | :04:03.
been found on a cigarette but in Claudia's car. Then use of an | :04:04. | :04:06.
arrest. Phil, the investigation has clearly | :04:07. | :04:16.
gathered pace since the 5th anniversary | :04:17. | :04:18.
of Claudia's disappearance. Yes, the police enquiry has moved on | :04:19. | :04:32.
since the police reopened the case at the end of last year. New | :04:33. | :04:36.
fingerprints have been discovered in Claudia's house, new DNA has been | :04:37. | :04:45.
found. For Claudia's family, this has been an incredibly difficult | :04:46. | :04:49.
five years. They say that this morning's arrest has come as a total | :04:50. | :04:56.
shock for them. They hope that these developments will move closer to | :04:57. | :05:07.
some sort of closure. The police are clearly doing a lot | :05:08. | :05:09.
behind`the`scenes that we do not see going on. | :05:10. | :05:16.
Tonight, police are still very keen to stress that despite this arrest, | :05:17. | :05:20.
Claudia has not been found and that more arrests could follow. But it is | :05:21. | :05:26.
being seen as a significant development in this five`year | :05:27. | :05:26.
investigation. Well, | :05:27. | :05:30.
while detectives were searching that house in York, some of their | :05:31. | :05:33.
colleagues were searching another Our Chief Reporter Chris Stewart | :05:34. | :05:36.
is outside the house now. The announcement of an arrest came | :05:37. | :06:02.
this morning. The house here was quickly sealed off. Scenes of crime | :06:03. | :06:07.
officers have been in and out all day. They are just leaving now. They | :06:08. | :06:12.
suggested to neighbours that they will be here for a further two days. | :06:13. | :06:17.
We have spoken to neighbours and this is what they said. | :06:18. | :06:22.
I'm pretty sure that it is something to do with Claudia Lawrence | :06:23. | :06:25.
They came about a year ago and went right through the house and garden. | :06:26. | :06:31.
And we haven't seen them since and now they have come back again today. | :06:32. | :06:35.
About five cars and two or three vans came this | :06:36. | :06:37.
I've known him for years, I've seen him grow up. | :06:38. | :06:43.
Sorry about that, we have lost our signal from North Shields. Moving on | :06:44. | :07:02.
tonight. The names of three men whose bodies | :07:03. | :07:06.
were recovered from the River Tyne after they went missing | :07:07. | :07:09.
on a kayaking trip downriver Brothers Darren Thorpe, who was 41, | :07:10. | :07:12.
and Mark Thorpe, who was 39, Their cousin Gavin Bradley, | :07:13. | :07:16.
who was 36, came from Jarrow. Two of | :07:17. | :07:20.
the bodies were recovered from the river at Riding Mill and the other | :07:21. | :07:22.
was found in the Corbridge area. It looks benign and yet | :07:23. | :07:26.
from this spot, two brothers and their cousin began | :07:27. | :07:30.
what was to be a final journey. Today, they were named, | :07:31. | :07:34.
Darren and Mark Thorpe These are | :07:35. | :07:36.
the kayaks they are believed to have Even with this flat water, it is | :07:37. | :07:42.
amazing how much it does flow. The biggest problem is it is not | :07:43. | :07:51.
always what people see that changes the condition | :07:52. | :07:59.
of the river they are on. You can start the journey | :08:00. | :08:01.
when it is raining up the valley and that water passes | :08:02. | :08:04.
down the valley during the day and Not just where you are, | :08:05. | :08:07.
but upstream as well. The environmental | :08:08. | :08:15.
agency are amazing. Some of the sites they have, | :08:16. | :08:20.
and there are webcams where you can see the marks on the river | :08:21. | :08:23.
and judge how high the water is. Kayaking is a booming activity, | :08:24. | :08:27.
it costs hundreds of pounds. Anything like this happens, | :08:28. | :08:32.
it gets around very quickly. We try to give as much information | :08:33. | :08:34.
and try to push people towards going to a club, to get as much training | :08:35. | :08:44.
on safety and doublecheck How the three men got themselves | :08:45. | :08:47.
into trouble is now the subject Police say they will hand a file | :08:48. | :08:53.
to the coroner in due course. It's a story that's becoming | :08:54. | :09:05.
depressingly familiar. A 19`year`old student, | :09:06. | :09:07.
out for a Saturday night with friends in a club, sets off home | :09:08. | :09:10.
in the early hours of the morning. Today, as police stepped up | :09:11. | :09:14.
their hunt for Luke Pearce from London, they brought in extra help | :09:15. | :09:20.
from Durham's student population. no trace of Luke Pearce. | :09:21. | :09:23.
The first year engineering student left a city centre night spot with | :09:24. | :09:36.
friends early on Sunday morning, but at some point on this unlit path | :09:37. | :09:43.
back to his college, he disappeared. There have been extensive searches | :09:44. | :09:45.
of this stretch of the River Wear. Today the focus was on land with | :09:46. | :09:48.
Luke's fellow students here to look For any possible clue. He is a | :09:49. | :10:14.
lovely guy. Our fresh set of eyes, you never know. Do you still have | :10:15. | :10:21.
hope? Yes. You have got to. But it has been awhile now. You think the | :10:22. | :10:26.
worst, but have to hope for the best. | :10:27. | :10:44.
for any possible clue. Police had been looking for any | :10:45. | :10:46.
electronic footprint that Luke might have left since Sunday night with no | :10:47. | :10:50.
success. Luke's disappearance comes less than | :10:51. | :10:51.
7 months after the loss in similar circumstances of Durham economics | :10:52. | :10:54.
student Shopwe Peters. A coroner called for action to keep drinkers | :10:55. | :10:57.
safer in these riverside environments. | :10:58. | :10:59.
We do a lot of work with our students about how to be safe. Dylan | :11:00. | :11:06.
is a safe city. But nonetheless, when there is a large number of | :11:07. | :11:11.
individuals, there will be incidents from time to time. | :11:12. | :11:21.
are spending ?20,000 a week on agency workers to fill the gaps left | :11:22. | :11:27.
by staff shortages. At one point, patients were turned away from a | :11:28. | :11:31.
clinic because the hospital couldn't cope and a newly recruited | :11:32. | :11:35.
consultant had to be drafted in to work weekends to clear the backlog. | :11:36. | :11:38.
The issues have come to light in an official NHS Risk Register which has | :11:39. | :11:42.
been shown to the BBC. Alison Freeman joins us from our Carlisle | :11:43. | :11:45.
This comes against a background of problems? | :11:46. | :11:58.
It was in June last year that the hospitals in Carlisle and Whitehaven | :11:59. | :12:02.
The document we have seen shows many areas | :12:03. | :12:05.
which affect patients care are still causing a high level of concern. | :12:06. | :12:08.
Among those considered high risk were staffing, patient medical | :12:09. | :12:11.
It's no secret that both hospitals have recruitment problems.Under | :12:12. | :12:15.
staffing has led to care which doesn't meet patients' needs. | :12:16. | :12:21.
But the register revealed covering sickness and rota gaps costs it | :12:22. | :12:24.
And in one case, a respiratory clinic had to stop | :12:25. | :12:28.
taking appointments as there weren't enough staff to cover it. | :12:29. | :12:31.
The register also showed that patient medical records were often | :12:32. | :12:34.
not available for appointments, meaning there could be delays | :12:35. | :12:37.
in diagnosis leading to harm to patients. | :12:38. | :12:39.
When it came to equipment, the register said kidney dialysis | :12:40. | :12:42.
units at both sites were old and broke down frequently. | :12:43. | :12:46.
And heart monitoring equipment in Whitehaven was broken, so temporary | :12:47. | :12:49.
Earlier I spoke to Dr Jeremy Rushmer, the trust's | :12:50. | :13:09.
medical director, and he told me that the risk register showed they | :13:10. | :13:12.
were properly monitoring problems but there was no quick fix. | :13:13. | :13:18.
The problems are systematic and long`standing. They involve the | :13:19. | :13:23.
structure of the organisation and the way it works. It takes some time | :13:24. | :13:29.
to turn that around. I agree that we need to move at peace, and we are | :13:30. | :13:35.
trying to do that. I hope that when the CQC gives its final verdict, | :13:36. | :13:41.
they will show there has been an improvement. There has been | :13:42. | :13:45.
improvement in terms of mortality, in terms of our acknowledgement of | :13:46. | :13:54.
understanding of our risks. And there is an action plan. | :13:55. | :13:55.
Thank you. Jeff has news from the football | :13:56. | :14:00.

the money raised goes to the Sammy Johnson Memorial Fund which | :14:30. | :14:32.
provides grants for young artists to Lee Armstrong, who's currently | :14:33. | :14:35.
playing the lead role in War Horse at the Sunderland Empire Theatre, | :14:36. | :14:39.
is one of the young performers He received a grant of ?1,700 | :14:40. | :14:42.
when he was still at school. I did drama in school | :14:43. | :14:54.
and things like that. I was enjoying it | :14:55. | :14:57.
and the teacher said, have you thought about going and applying to | :14:58. | :15:00.
the National Youth Theatre? At 16, going and living in London | :15:01. | :15:03.
and being surrounded by such great people in the industry who had such | :15:04. | :15:08.
great experience as well as people the same age, it made me | :15:09. | :15:11.
realise it's what I wanted to do. And it gave me confidence to go | :15:12. | :15:15.
and achieve everything I want to. Newcastle United are launching new | :15:16. | :15:20.

are a football fan or not. I've been doing a lot of research | :16:40. | :16:43.
into the development of Tyneside and Newcastle especially, so the | :16:44. | :16:46.
tour can vary between information about the football club, the club's | :16:47. | :16:49.
development, but also the Tickets cost ?20 per adult | :16:50. | :16:51.

Bootham Crescent. They'd won on each of their three | :17:55. | :17:57.
previous trips across the Pennines And it was the same old story, | :17:58. | :18:00.
as the Minstermen only briefly threatened to carve out | :18:01. | :18:06.
a first leg lead. Fleetwood's winner came early | :18:07. | :18:08.
in the second half. A decent build`up, finished off, | :18:09. | :18:11.
almost apologetically by He'd been | :18:12. | :18:13.
a York player up to last summer, First, goalkeeper Nick | :18:14. | :18:18.
Pope came to the rescue. Then with time running out, | :18:19. | :18:26.
Canadian international Iain Hume found himself in the clear but | :18:27. | :18:28.
dragged his shot wide of the post. So they'll go to Fleetwood on Friday | :18:29. | :18:32.
just the one goal behind, We were second best. But in the | :18:33. | :18:53.
second half, but it was more like the old York. It's not the end of | :18:54. | :19:01.
the world. They were stronger at the last 20 minutes. Always a better | :19:02. | :19:05.
team. The Newcastle defender has had his | :19:06. | :19:25.
red card rescinded. His claim against wrongful dismissal was | :19:26. | :19:31.
upheld and he will not start next season with a three match ban. | :19:32. | :19:36.
Cricket now, and Durham's Ben Stokes could play a part | :19:37. | :19:38.
in England's first test matches of the summer against Sri Lanka despite | :19:39. | :19:42.
He famously punched a locker in frustration during a game | :19:43. | :19:46.
in Barbados and feared he might miss the first half of the season. | :19:47. | :19:49.
But a scan yesterday shows he's recovering well and could soon be | :19:50. | :19:53.
in contention for his county and his country. | :19:54. | :19:55.
Ben Stokes may not have held a bat in anger this season | :19:56. | :19:58.
so to speak but the good news is at least he can hold one. | :19:59. | :20:02.
The 22`year`old all rounder's been promoting this summer's new one day | :20:03. | :20:05.
50 over cup competition and is finding it tough being out | :20:06. | :20:08.
The most frustrating thing is being injured and watching the cricket go | :20:09. | :20:19.
on. I would be playing for Durham at the moment if it wasn't for this | :20:20. | :20:21.
injury. While his wrist injury was | :20:22. | :20:24.
entirely self inflicted, reports he's been having anger management | :20:25. | :20:27.
therapy are wide of the mark. We've got other sports | :20:28. | :20:36.
psychologist. I don't think I'm losing the plot. Just making sure | :20:37. | :20:41.
that if it ever gets to that stage again, making sure you do not punch | :20:42. | :20:46.
a locker. There are certain ways you can do it, screaming into a towel | :20:47. | :20:49.
and not hurting yourself. But this highly driven | :20:50. | :20:54.
and passionate young cricketer was the one highlight | :20:55. | :20:56.
in an otherwise dismal winter Ashes tour and his never say die spirit is | :20:57. | :20:59.
vital for Durham and England. Hopefully, I never get told... It is | :21:00. | :21:09.
part of me. It makes me what I am. Always wanting to be on the winning | :21:10. | :21:16.
side. It makes me perform. To see the new guys coming in, hopefully | :21:17. | :21:24.
going forward, I can be part of that. | :21:25. | :21:31.
Well, in the County Championship, Ben's teammates have been on | :21:32. | :21:33.
and off the pitch on a rain affected third day at Hove. | :21:34. | :21:37.
After losing two early wickets, Scott Borthwick and | :21:38. | :21:39.
Kumar Sangakkara mounted a comeback for Durham who were 137`2 at close | :21:40. | :21:42.
of play in reply to Sussex first innings total of 505`9 declared. | :21:43. | :21:47.
And on a rain affected day in Leeds, Yorkshire look set for victory. | :21:48. | :21:50.
Despite a captain's innings from Ian Bell, Warwickshire couldn't | :21:51. | :21:53.
avoid the follow on and they're now 84`7 in the second | :21:54. | :21:56.
It has been a beautiful day today. It hasn't been beautiful river. It | :21:57. | :22:16.
is never straight forward. Some bright pictures to start as of | :22:17. | :22:24.
today. Lovely to meet you all yesterday. Another bright picture | :22:25. | :22:27.
from this afternoon. Very colourful. It is not all good going over the | :22:28. | :22:43.
next few days, but generally speaking, high pressure takes charge | :22:44. | :22:47.
of the weather and settles things down. A lot of dry weather to have | :22:48. | :22:56.
later in the week. But today, some heavy, thundery showers of `` across | :22:57. | :23:05.
parts of Yorkshire. Some lightning and he'll is well. It would take a | :23:06. | :23:13.
while for those showers to disappear, then overnight, it will | :23:14. | :23:17.
be driver most of us with a few mist patches forming. I chilly night as | :23:18. | :23:27.
well. Temperatures 5`7 degrees. Stop possibly cold enough for some grass | :23:28. | :23:34.
frost in places. Tomorrow morning, some brightness and sunshine from | :23:35. | :23:40.
time to time. But the cloud will thicken up from the Northwest, | :23:41. | :23:47.
bringing patchy rain into western parts of Cumbria and the Scottish | :23:48. | :23:52.
Borders. Temperatures peaking at 16 Celsius and the wind was to light. | :23:53. | :23:56.
That is a picture for tomorrow, that little weather front. But then | :23:57. | :24:03.
high`pressure starts to dominate. That should bring a lot of dry | :24:04. | :24:09.
weather. A few complications as these are weather fronts try to | :24:10. | :24:12.
squeeze their way in from the North West. A largely dry picture with the | :24:13. | :24:19.
wind predominately in the West. But temperatures in the high teens. For | :24:20. | :24:27.
the north`east, the cloud will be more broken at times. Temperatures | :24:28. | :24:35.
improving. By Friday afternoon, the north`east coast could be looking at | :24:36. | :24:41.
temperatures up to 21 Celsius. That is the way the weather is looking | :24:42. | :24:50.
for the next few days. Send us your weather pictures. | :24:51. | :24:57.
And just before we go, congratulations to | :24:58. | :24:59.
our colleagues at BBC Tees who won a gold award at the Radio Academy | :25:00. | :25:03.
They won the prize for Best Station with under one million listeners. | :25:04. | :25:08.
The judges said, "BBC Tees is a station where proud of where we live | :25:09. | :25:12.
is not just a strap line but a daily inspiration to great local radio. | :25:13. | :25:25.
That is it from us tonight. Join me again at half past ten. Good night. | :25:26. | :25:32. |
