Detectives continue to question a man over the murder of | :00:00. | :00:08.

the aspiring clothing designers hoping to make it to the top. | :00:22. | :00:24.
In sport, we look at Gateshead?s bid to end a 54`year | :00:25. | :00:27.
And, Newcastle United answer the question ` will Alan Pardew be | :00:28. | :00:33.
First tonight, detectives are still questioning | :00:34. | :00:54.
a man on suspicion of killing the York chef Claudia Lawrence. | :00:55. | :00:57.
Michael Snelling, who's 59, was arrested yesterday at | :00:58. | :00:59.
Today, forensics officers continued their search of that property, | :01:00. | :01:05.
along with the house he lived in, in York itself. | :01:06. | :01:07.
We'll be live there with Phil Connell in a few moments. | :01:08. | :01:11.
First, Gerry Jackson has been following the activity on | :01:12. | :01:14.
North Tyneside, a place where Mr Snelling has longstanding links. | :01:15. | :01:25.
Yes, and quite a few people here know him. It is five years and two | :01:26. | :01:30.
months since Roger Lawrence disappeared on her way to work. | :01:31. | :01:36.
Weeks after the police announced a renewed investigation into her | :01:37. | :01:41.
supposed murder, enquiries have turned to this ordinary looking | :01:42. | :01:46.
semidetached home close to North Tyneside's coast road. Here, | :01:47. | :01:50.
officers have spent a second day in a meticulous search for evidence. | :01:51. | :01:56.
Day two, and, while their suspect was being held at 90 miles away, his | :01:57. | :02:00.
former home was once again being examined. Neighbours say Michael | :02:01. | :02:07.
Snelling grew up in this area, and in recent years has frequently | :02:08. | :02:10.
returned from his York workplace to visit his mother here. Forensics | :02:11. | :02:15.
officers with specialist search equipment has spent much of today | :02:16. | :02:20.
inside the property. A search dog has also formed part of the | :02:21. | :02:23.
investigation. We understand this is a device to scan for fingerprints. | :02:24. | :02:29.
One neighbour who has lived for many years that she has known the 59 your | :02:30. | :02:34.
old since he was 13. She paints a picture of a caring son who died on | :02:35. | :02:40.
his mother, a keen Newcastle United fan, and in her view, in every | :02:41. | :02:46.
respect, a respectable man. Unlike Vista Snelling's home in York, this | :02:47. | :02:52.
house so far bears no signs of close inspection of the garden, but it is | :02:53. | :02:56.
another indication to Claudia's family and friends that this | :02:57. | :02:59.
investigation is moving more quickly and extensively than it has for much | :03:00. | :03:05.
of the last five years. In absence of any body of Claudia, the family | :03:06. | :03:11.
have taken a more hopeful line, and I think that continues until it is | :03:12. | :03:17.
disproved. For most of today, the uniformed police presence has | :03:18. | :03:20.
consisted of one officer in this quiet Tyneside neighbourhood. For | :03:21. | :03:24.
now, the main focus of this murder hunt remains elsewhere. | :03:25. | :03:30.
We have regarded this street in North Shields as a brand`new | :03:31. | :03:35.
location in the inquiry, but we have since learned there was a brief | :03:36. | :03:40.
forensic search of this property little over a year ago. Something | :03:41. | :03:45.
has prompted the police not just to reawaken their interest in this | :03:46. | :03:48.
house, but to spend two more days inside it. | :03:49. | :03:53.
Forensic searches have been continuing at the York home | :03:54. | :03:55.
Phil Connell has spent the day there for us and joins us live now. | :03:56. | :04:01.
Well the second day of this investigation, and here in York this | :04:02. | :04:14.
semidetached house remains the focus of the police inquiry. This morning, | :04:15. | :04:19.
forensic teams arrived to carry on with their investigation, searching | :04:20. | :04:23.
inside the house, and also in the back garden. The area behind the | :04:24. | :04:27.
garage here this morning, a blue tent was erected, and throughout the | :04:28. | :04:32.
day, that seems to have been the focus of the investigation. This | :04:33. | :04:35.
afternoon, a sniffer dog arrived from the South Yorkshire force to | :04:36. | :04:40.
help with the investigation. The man who lives here, 59`year`old Michael | :04:41. | :04:44.
Snelling armour is still being questioned by detectives in York | :04:45. | :04:49.
tonight. Earlier today, it emerged he had worked as a lab technician at | :04:50. | :04:54.
York University, the same place where Claudia had worked as a chef. | :04:55. | :04:59.
Has there been any more reaction from family and friends in York? | :05:00. | :05:06.
For family and friends it remains an incredibly difficult time. We hope | :05:07. | :05:10.
that this arrest came as a complete surprise to them. Earlier, we spoke | :05:11. | :05:14.
to one close friend of Claudia who told us how they have been coping. I | :05:15. | :05:21.
have never totally given up hope, and I have always wanted a | :05:22. | :05:25.
resolution. That has not changed. As time has gone on, you have to get on | :05:26. | :05:32.
with life to a certain extent, but Claudia's disappearance has been | :05:33. | :05:36.
part of my life over the last five years, and it will be for ever. | :05:37. | :05:42.
Police are still stressing tonight that Claudia has not been found, and | :05:43. | :05:46.
that more arrests could follow in this investigation. | :05:47. | :05:52.
A man who denies murdering his wife has told Manchester Crown | :05:53. | :05:55.
Court he first started hearing voices in his head and seeing | :05:56. | :05:58.
Ahmed Al`Khatib admits killing Rania Alayed, | :05:59. | :06:02.
who's originally from Stockton, but denies murder on grounds | :06:03. | :06:05.
The court has also been hearing about extensive social media | :06:06. | :06:10.
exchanges in the weeks before Rania's death. | :06:11. | :06:18.
The family of the three men who died in a kayaking tragedy on the | :06:19. | :06:22.
River Tyne on Sunday have released photos of their loved ones. | :06:23. | :06:25.
Brothers Darren Thorpe, who was 41, and Mark Thorpe, who was 39, | :06:26. | :06:28.
Their cousin Gavin Bradley, who was 36, came from Jarrow. | :06:29. | :06:32.
The men had intended to kayak down the river to Wylam, but, | :06:33. | :06:35.
when they failed to return home to South Tyneside on Sunday night, the | :06:36. | :06:39.
The search for 19`year`old Luke Pearce, is now into its fourth day. | :06:40. | :06:48.
The student went missing after a night out with friends | :06:49. | :06:50.
Luke hasn't been seen since the early hours of Sunday | :06:51. | :06:55.
morning when he left his friends after a night out at Jimmy Allen's. | :06:56. | :06:58.
Unemployment has gone up in the North East ` the only part | :06:59. | :07:11.
The number of people without a job increased by 5,000 to 135,000 | :07:12. | :07:16.
In Cumbria, the number claiming benefit is down to just under 6,300. | :07:17. | :07:22.
So, given that surprise rise in North East unemployment, what can we | :07:23. | :07:25.
Many experts foresee yet more people choosing to become self`employed. | :07:26. | :07:30.
This will sleep five people, it has got its own shower, toilet and | :07:31. | :07:46.
self`contained kitchen unit. Out here will be the fire pit and a | :07:47. | :07:56.
fantastic view. Tom is one of a 4.5 million countrywide army. He is self | :07:57. | :08:01.
employed, a sector that has grown by 650,000 people since the recession | :08:02. | :08:08.
started in 2008. For Tom, starting his campaign business in North | :08:09. | :08:11.
Yorkshire was an alternative to unemployment. I was working as a | :08:12. | :08:17.
chartered surveyor. When the downturn hit, it appeared to be an | :08:18. | :08:24.
ideal opportunity. But there are downsides. More than a quarter of | :08:25. | :08:28.
newly self`employed people said they would rather be working for an | :08:29. | :08:32.
employer. A typical self`employed worker earns less than the typical | :08:33. | :08:36.
employee, and nearly 30% of self`employed people pay into a | :08:37. | :08:41.
pension, compared to 51% of employees. The reason for prizes in | :08:42. | :08:47.
self`employment are complex. There is an older workforce putting off | :08:48. | :08:51.
retirement, a growing desire to be our own boss, and a weak jobs market | :08:52. | :08:56.
has meant there are fewer options. In the north`east there are 124,000 | :08:57. | :09:01.
self`employed people. That figure could rise, given today's surprise | :09:02. | :09:07.
hike in unemployment. Peter's agency is here to give them loans. The cash | :09:08. | :09:12.
going to the self`employed affected by changes in the steel industry, | :09:13. | :09:17.
said various areas in the region. We have dealt with in number of | :09:18. | :09:22.
businesses that have started off with self`employment, maybe two | :09:23. | :09:25.
people in a room in a back office, and they have blossomed. And the | :09:26. | :09:30.
rise of the self`employed looks set to continue. 5 million is the | :09:31. | :09:38.
It's just over a week until polling begins | :09:39. | :09:44.
In the North East, three seats are up for grabs. | :09:45. | :09:50.
So, to help you decide who should fill them, | :09:51. | :09:52.
our Political Editor Richard Moss has taken Look North's hot seats to | :09:53. | :09:55.
Gateshead to bring candidates face to face with the voters. | :09:56. | :10:00.
All we now need are some European election candidates so the voters | :10:01. | :10:08.
can put them through their paces. First up with a question, it is | :10:09. | :10:11.
ironic, who is worried about immigration. Our people coming in, | :10:12. | :10:17.
contributing to the country, they pay their taxes, that there are a | :10:18. | :10:23.
hell of a lot here for a free ride. The majority of people come into the | :10:24. | :10:28.
UK to work. One in seven businesses that are started in the UK are | :10:29. | :10:32.
started up by immigrants, so they are creating jobs. I think there is | :10:33. | :10:35.
a lot of misunderstanding about immigration. I don't think there is | :10:36. | :10:41.
any misunderstanding. How can this country survive much longer when it | :10:42. | :10:47.
is being squeezed so tight. But the reality is that is not the | :10:48. | :10:52.
responsibility of immigrants in the north`east. 40% of the NHS, the vast | :10:53. | :10:58.
majority in the north`east is dependent on migrant workers | :10:59. | :11:00.
bringing in their skills and looking after people across the region. The | :11:01. | :11:07.
important thing is to make sure that anyone who comes to the country | :11:08. | :11:13.
comes here to work and not just a claim in a fit. The covenant has put | :11:14. | :11:17.
steps in place to ensure that. There has to be six months before you can | :11:18. | :11:21.
claim any benefits, and then if you don't get a job you have to go back | :11:22. | :11:25.
to your own country. At the moment, there are 27 other countries who | :11:26. | :11:30.
have a complete open door. UKIP is saying we should have a fair points | :11:31. | :11:34.
`based system so those who are coming into the country are those | :11:35. | :11:36.
who are going to work hard, make a difference. A great start for UKIP, | :11:37. | :11:42.
but I have a feeling their candidate won't get on quite so well with | :11:43. | :11:47.
Craig. Nissan is one of the biggest employers in the north`east. 8% of | :11:48. | :11:52.
the cast made there are sold back to Europe. If we come out of Europe, | :11:53. | :11:57.
those trade links that we have will dissolve. Where will that leave us? | :11:58. | :12:04.
People will say that those jobs are not necessarily at risk if we pull | :12:05. | :12:07.
out, but it calls into question the investment decisions of the | :12:08. | :12:11.
companies in investing in the north`east. At the moment, we have | :12:12. | :12:14.
the highest unemployment in the country. We should focus all of our | :12:15. | :12:21.
attention on bringing in more in basement `` investment into the | :12:22. | :12:25.
north`east to create good jobs for local people, rather than putting | :12:26. | :12:29.
them at risk. Labour accused UKIP of scaremongering. Outside of the EU, | :12:30. | :12:34.
we would still continue to trade with the EU. | :12:35. | :12:44.
Not on the scale that it is at the moment. It would not be in any | :12:45. | :12:51.
one's interests to impose tariffs on the UK. I am how that Nissan was | :12:52. | :12:57.
brought to the UK by Margaret Thatcher's government. We work hard | :12:58. | :13:02.
to ensure they continue to have access to the single market. I find | :13:03. | :13:08.
it funny that you take credit for bringing Nissan to the north`east. | :13:09. | :13:13.
It is a fact, you can see it. It was during her government that happen. | :13:14. | :13:17.
You might not like it as a Labour supporter, but it happen. I am not a | :13:18. | :13:22.
Labour supporter. To have strong representatives in Brussels means | :13:23. | :13:27.
they can actually help with legislation that affects businesses | :13:28. | :13:34.
here. Eurosceptic Karina seems like a | :13:35. | :13:37.
better bet for UKIP, but she has an awkward question for their | :13:38. | :13:42.
candidates. If you view the European Union as undemocratic, is it | :13:43. | :13:48.
hypocritical to take away from the European Parliament? You have to | :13:49. | :13:52.
take up the seeds are otherwise you can't use that platform to campaign | :13:53. | :13:55.
for what you are going to achieve, and you can find out what is going | :13:56. | :14:00.
to happen, and let people know what it happening. It is important we | :14:01. | :14:04.
have someone strong in the European Parliament. There is no more | :14:05. | :14:11.
bureaucracy then there is in local council. It is in the | :14:12. | :14:18.
administration. As long as the EU is developing policies, it is my role | :14:19. | :14:22.
to get in there, work on the legislation, represent the | :14:23. | :14:26.
north`east and make it better. Glenda is worried about jobs. I feel | :14:27. | :14:31.
like the young people of today have been thrown on the scrap heap. What | :14:32. | :14:35.
is your opinion and how will you help? We have been pushing in the | :14:36. | :14:41.
European Parliament for a youth guarantee, focusing on regions like | :14:42. | :14:44.
the north`east where we have high unemployment in the youth areas. | :14:45. | :14:50.
Fans need to be channelled into create jobs, and good | :14:51. | :14:54.
apprenticeships, and also training opportunities. Almost a million | :14:55. | :14:59.
young people are unemployed in this country at a time when have I | :15:00. | :15:07.
uncontrolled immigration. We need to do better, we accept that. We have | :15:08. | :15:12.
to do encourage more industry, expand the single market, get more | :15:13. | :15:15.
people to come and invest in the region. So, our European candidates | :15:16. | :15:23.
have just over a week before they find out which one will head for the | :15:24. | :15:24.
hot seat in Brussels. There are eight parties | :15:25. | :15:29.
in total standing in the European You can see a full list | :15:30. | :15:31.
of candidates for all the regions North Yorkshire police have released | :15:32. | :15:45.
59`year`old Michael Snelling on conditional bail following the | :15:46. | :15:49.
arrest yesterday related to the disappearance of chef Claudia | :15:50. | :15:53.
Lawrence. We will bring you more at 10:25pm. | :15:54. | :15:59.
Some of the biggest names in the fashion industry keep a sharp | :16:00. | :16:03.
eye on graduates from Northumbria University for up and coming talent. | :16:04. | :16:05.
That's why hundreds of aspiring designers apply to study | :16:06. | :16:08.
But only 20% of them make it onto the course. | :16:09. | :16:15.
As part of this year's Newcastle Fashion Week, | :16:16. | :16:17.
the students show their final year collections to buyers. | :16:18. | :16:20.
But, do they have what it takes to make it to the top? | :16:21. | :16:23.
Their creations do the talking, the models do the walking. A year of | :16:24. | :16:33.
work and into a matter of minutes. The final year fashion students show | :16:34. | :16:40.
their collections. The collection is based on Margaret Thatcher, this | :16:41. | :16:43.
idea of a woman in a man's world. As a young fashion student from | :16:44. | :16:49.
Bedlington, choosing Margaret Thatcher as they style icon is | :16:50. | :16:54.
controversial, isn't it? It is, or the connotations that go with it, | :16:55. | :17:02.
but it seemed relevant, when we started researching it was the time | :17:03. | :17:06.
when she passed away. That was the key inspiration for the collection. | :17:07. | :17:12.
I have been trying to challenge conventions of fabric using silicon | :17:13. | :17:17.
rubber. You have made all of these yourself? Yes, I have made moulds. | :17:18. | :17:23.
It is all done by hand. It has been a painstaking process. The course | :17:24. | :17:28.
was set up 60 years ago to provide skilled labour for garment | :17:29. | :17:31.
manufacturing in the region. Over the years, factories have closed, | :17:32. | :17:36.
workforces disbanded, but here in the faculty of Art and design, that | :17:37. | :17:42.
skills live on. I have spent 20 years in the industry, and being one | :17:43. | :17:46.
of the last seamstresses out of the industry I feel it is important for | :17:47. | :17:52.
me to work in an environment like this so I can pass on my skills of | :17:53. | :17:58.
what has become a dying trade in the UK. And that is despite being highly | :17:59. | :18:02.
sought`after in the global fashion industry. On average, 350 students | :18:03. | :18:09.
apply here every year but only 70 are taken on a half of whom are from | :18:10. | :18:15.
the north`east. Once they graduate, more than 80% get full`time jobs. | :18:16. | :18:19.
That's largely thanks to former students, who are now holding top | :18:20. | :18:22.
jobs for high end and high`street labels,. We have a huge body of al | :18:23. | :18:39.
night around the world. Dash`macro alumni. They have a huge amount of | :18:40. | :18:45.
industry experience. A lot of them won't go to recruitment agencies, | :18:46. | :18:48.
they will come to us because they know the knowledge and experience | :18:49. | :18:49.
that our students have. Northumbria University for fashion | :18:50. | :19:10.
is regarded as the creme de la creme of fashion colleges. We produce | :19:11. | :19:14.
fantastic fashion designers who go on to work for fabulous brands. | :19:15. | :19:39.
On to sport, and we now know the answer to the question every | :19:40. | :19:43.
Newcastle United fan's been asking for the past few days ` will | :19:44. | :19:46.
Within the last couple of hours, Newcastle United has confirmed that | :19:47. | :20:02.
Alan Pardew will remain as the Magpies' manager. | :20:03. | :20:06.
He's been under pressure from some supporters, after a slump which | :20:07. | :20:09.
saw the team lose seven of their last eight Premier League games. | :20:10. | :20:12.
But, at a meeting of the Fans' Forum, the minutes of which have | :20:13. | :20:16.
just been released, the board said Pardew would keep his job, that | :20:17. | :20:19.
owner Mike Ashley isn?t actively trying to sell the club, and that | :20:20. | :20:22.
the priority next season would be the Premier League above any Cup | :20:23. | :20:26.
This Sunday they go to Wembley, trying to win back their place | :20:27. | :20:33.
in the Football League after more than half a century. | :20:34. | :20:36.
Last night, Gateshead's Gary Mills was honoured | :20:37. | :20:38.
for his incredible work in turning the football club around, when he | :20:39. | :20:41.

We scored a goal right at the end in the last minute to wind at Wembley, | :21:13. | :21:26.
it was unbelievable. To get there for Gateshead is a massive | :21:27. | :21:27.
achievement. He has a winning mentality, and that | :21:28. | :21:53.
proves, finishing third. Hopefully we can go on and get to the football | :21:54. | :21:59.
league on Sunday. He played in an FA Cup semifinal, but that wasn't at | :22:00. | :22:05.
Wembley, was it? No, it was at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, we lost the | :22:06. | :22:08.
game. Not good memories of that game. But it is another game which | :22:09. | :22:13.
is high profile, but this time it is that the new Wembley and everyone is | :22:14. | :22:19.
looking forward to it. The manager is the man who, as a teen aged, | :22:20. | :22:22.
guided them back via a Wembley final. I was involved in 1980, I | :22:23. | :22:32.
played in the European cup at 16. I have one at Wembley, I have scored | :22:33. | :22:36.
at Wembley. I have had a lovely career. I look back on it with fond | :22:37. | :22:39.
memories, but this would be the greatest achievement for me. You | :22:40. | :22:44.
cannot put into words what 90 minutes of football means to | :22:45. | :22:52.
Gateshead football club. You can apply the same tag to this man, Gary | :22:53. | :22:54.
Mills, the Gateshead boss. We will have more on Gateshead | :22:55. | :23:02.
tomorrow. In cricket, Sri Lankan batsman Kumar | :23:03. | :23:07.

Sangakkar hit 159 as Durham reached With the game badly affected | :23:17. | :23:19.
by rain, it finished in a draw. Time for the weather forecast now. | :23:20. | :23:36.
It is unusual to follow cricket with a mention of sunshine! This was the | :23:37. | :23:45.
view earlier on today. Tomorrow the sun will come out again, but it will | :23:46. | :23:49.
be a slow start. A damp start in some places, but it will become | :23:50. | :23:55.
warmer in the afternoon. Through this evening and into the night, | :23:56. | :23:59.
cloud spills from the West, thick enough give some light rain and | :24:00. | :24:04.
drizzle through the first part of the night. That moves eastwards. A | :24:05. | :24:10.
mucky and to the night. Nothing colder than eight or nine Celsius | :24:11. | :24:18.
under those clouds. A great start for many, with some misty conditions | :24:19. | :24:23.
and the odd spot of rain. Why the afternoon, the cloud will lift and | :24:24. | :24:27.
break, giving a much lighter feel to the second half of the day. A | :24:28. | :24:32.
weather front passing through tonight will introduce warmer air | :24:33. | :24:39.
and temperatures will be up on today. Through the next few days, | :24:40. | :24:50.
high pressure is in charge. Sunday looks like a bit of a change with a | :24:51. | :24:54.
weather front coming from the north`west, which will eventually | :24:55. | :24:58.
bring some cloud and rain. In the meantime, there is a lot of dry | :24:59. | :25:02.
weather to be had. For tomorrow and Friday, most places dry. Assemble, | :25:03. | :25:07.
for most of us. Friday looks to be a nice day with temperatures on the | :25:08. | :25:16.
up. Another fine day for most of us on Saturday. Things will start to | :25:17. | :25:26.
change on Sunday with thickening cloud. We will keep you posted. | :25:27. | :25:32.
Remember, if you have got a picture that you think should feature in | :25:33. | :25:38.
next year's weather calendar for May, do let us have it. | :25:39. | :25:49.
That led from the team this evening. Join us again at 10:25pm. Goodbye. | :25:50. | :26:22.
