missing. That's all from the BBC News at Six - so it's goodbye from | :00:00. | :00:07.
Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight... | :00:08. | :00:09.
An inquest opens into the three men who died. | :00:10. | :00:20.
The mother of Claudia runs speaks of her shock five years after her | :00:21. | :00:27.
disappearance. The strain is so difficult. | :00:28. | :00:30.
On`street parking charges are given the green light in Cumbria. | :00:31. | :00:34.
Traders fear it'll hit their businesses hard. | :00:35. | :00:36.
And two top national tourism awards | :00:37. | :00:38.
for Seahouses on the Northumberland coast. | :00:39. | :00:40.
But what's given the former fishing village the golden touch? | :00:41. | :00:42.
In sport, it's a family affair for Harper and Son | :00:43. | :00:45.
Durham Jets prepare to blast off in cricket's T20. | :00:46. | :01:07.
The inquest into the death of three men, who were trying to kayak | :01:08. | :01:10.
down the River Tyne, was opened and adjourned this morning and was | :01:11. | :01:14.
told all three were "relatively inexperienced" at the sport. | :01:15. | :01:16.
Two brothers and their cousin died as they tried to paddle through | :01:17. | :01:19.
Their bodies were recovered the next day. | :01:20. | :01:24.
Our Chief Reporter Chris Stewart has the story. | :01:25. | :01:29.
Three days after the emergency services | :01:30. | :01:31.
pulled the bodies of the men from the water, | :01:32. | :01:33.
and now the formal enquiry into their deaths begins. | :01:34. | :01:36.
Brothers Darren and Mark Thorpe were aged 41 and 39 | :01:37. | :01:39.
and were from South Shields. They had gone on the kayaking trip | :01:40. | :01:42.
with their cousin, Gavin Bradley, 36, also from South Shields. | :01:43. | :01:47.
He is pictured here with his wife Louise and daughters Molly | :01:48. | :01:50.
and Gracie. The police say the men had planned to paddle | :01:51. | :01:54.
from Hexham to Wylam along waters swollen by heavy rain. | :01:55. | :01:58.
They were found on a stretch of the River Tyne | :01:59. | :02:01.
between Corbridge and Riding Mill. | :02:02. | :02:04.
The Coroners Court, here in North Shields, this | :02:05. | :02:06.
afternoon heard all three men had only recently taken up the sport. | :02:07. | :02:11.
The British Canoe Union says more than a million people take to | :02:12. | :02:16.
the water in canoes and kayaks in this country every year. | :02:17. | :02:19.
And while it might seem inevitable that this hearing will eventually | :02:20. | :02:22.
find that the men died as a result of an accident, that is not | :02:23. | :02:26.
The coroner will want to examine al the evidence to see | :02:27. | :02:32.
if there is something there which might just prevent similar | :02:33. | :02:35.
The full hearing is scheduled for July. | :02:36. | :02:47.
Joan Lawrence, the mother of missing York chef Claudia Lawrence, | :02:48. | :02:49.
has spoken of the emotional turmoil she's been thrown into | :02:50. | :02:52.
Police investigating the case have been continuing | :02:53. | :02:57.
their forensic examinations at two houses in York and North Shields. | :02:58. | :03:00.
Both properties are linked to 59`year`old Michael Snelling, | :03:01. | :03:03.
who was arrested on Tuesday and released on police bail last night. | :03:04. | :03:06.
Mrs Lawrence says the arrest came out of the blue | :03:07. | :03:09.
after five years of seemingly fruitless investigation. | :03:10. | :03:12.
The house remains the focus of police activity and searches today | :03:13. | :03:27.
three days after the arrest of a 59`year`old man on the suspicion of | :03:28. | :03:31.
murder. He has been released on conditional bail as enquiries | :03:32. | :03:36.
continue. The houses have a mile from Claudia Lawrence's home. She | :03:37. | :03:40.
disappeared without trace in March 2009. Her family have campaigned | :03:41. | :03:46.
tirelessly for the last five years to keep her disappearance in the | :03:47. | :03:50.
public eye. And hoping for a breakthrough in a case that seem to | :03:51. | :03:54.
have stalled. This morning, her mother said it has taken an | :03:55. | :04:00.
emotional toll. This is the first time there has been an arrest in | :04:01. | :04:04.
five years. This has come totally out of the blow. I had absolutely no | :04:05. | :04:10.
warning, not even an inkling, that this was going to happen. It was | :04:11. | :04:17.
like shell shock. And Tuesday morning, when the police walked in | :04:18. | :04:22.
and informed me quite early in the morning that this was going to take | :04:23. | :04:28.
place. I am glad they did in for me before it went out on the media. And | :04:29. | :04:35.
I could not believe it. While the arrest on Tuesday might feel like a | :04:36. | :04:39.
breakthrough, it is worth stressing no one has been charged and Mrs | :04:40. | :04:43.
Lawrence is wary of people jumping to conclusions. I just need to sit | :04:44. | :04:48.
and think about it, say my prayers and get through the rest of the | :04:49. | :04:54.
days. But at the bottom of all this, I am concerned about this person, | :04:55. | :05:02.
because this person might be totally innocent and I am concerned, both my | :05:03. | :05:09.
daughter and I are concerned that all this publicity, what Hammett | :05:10. | :05:13.
could do to another family. Meanwhile, North Yorkshire Police a | :05:14. | :05:18.
further arrest could be made as their enquiries progress. | :05:19. | :05:26.
The search for 19`year`old Luke Pearce is now entering | :05:27. | :05:29.
Luke went missing at the weekend after a night out in Durham. | :05:30. | :05:33.
He hasn't been seen since the early hours of Sunday morning, when he | :05:34. | :05:36.
left his friends after visiting the Jimmy Allen's nightclub. | :05:37. | :05:39.
He was last seen heading in the direction of Maiden Castle. | :05:40. | :05:45.
Depending on where you live, and on whether you drive, you either | :05:46. | :05:53.
Northumberland recently dropped its car park | :05:54. | :05:56.
But Cumbria County Council has just approved the introduction of charges | :05:57. | :06:00.
The council's cabinet has agreed to charges in the city of Carlisle, | :06:01. | :06:06.
and towns including Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven, Maryport, | :06:07. | :06:08.
It says the scheme should mean "a greater turnover of vehicles in | :06:09. | :06:12.
But traders are worried it'll drive shoppers away. | :06:13. | :06:16.
Spuds have been on the menu on this street corner in Penrith | :06:17. | :06:23.
But Tim is worried about plans to charge for parking on the road | :06:24. | :06:27.
Especially when half of his customers drive in from out | :06:28. | :06:32.
Those guys won't want to come into town and have to pay for | :06:33. | :06:38.
on street parking when they want to quickly nip in, get a potato | :06:39. | :06:42.
I think it will be a detrimental effect to my business and it will be | :06:43. | :06:48.
Finding a parking space in this busy market town can be | :06:49. | :06:56.
But at the moment, when you do, you simply stick your disc | :06:57. | :07:04.
What businesses are worried about is if people have to start to | :07:05. | :07:09.
pay to park to pop to the shops for a bite to eat or paper, they | :07:10. | :07:13.
The county council has decided to introduce parking charges to | :07:14. | :07:23.
cover cost of traffic wardens and painting yellow lines. | :07:24. | :07:25.
But district councils will be asked to help shape how it works. | :07:26. | :07:28.
It is important that we still retain some elements of free | :07:29. | :07:32.
Even if it is a shorter amount of time. | :07:33. | :07:35.
The ability to stop in a market town, pick something up | :07:36. | :07:38.
from the corner shop , newsagents, whatever, it is vital. | :07:39. | :07:41.
If we lose that altogether, then you are playing | :07:42. | :07:44.
into the hands of the bigger stores and supermarkets which all | :07:45. | :07:47.
You won't be able to take that choice away from people. | :07:48. | :07:51.
Not everything can be got in a supermarket. | :07:52. | :07:54.
You can't buy ranges of clothes or do business with | :07:55. | :07:56.
So I think this is not going to be a detrimental effect on business | :07:57. | :08:02.
I'd probably just go somewhere like Morrison's where I wouldn't | :08:03. | :08:06.
There's too many small shops going to the wall anyway. | :08:07. | :08:10.
But it would just cause a bit of an inconvenience. | :08:11. | :08:18.
The parking charges should be in place before Christmas. | :08:19. | :08:31.
Cumbria County Council's also approved plans | :08:32. | :08:33.
to spend more than ?7.5 million on LED lights, | :08:34. | :08:35.
which will reduce the council's energy bills. | :08:36. | :08:37.
For a trial period lights will be dimmed, or switched off, | :08:38. | :08:40.
Where ever we consider this, it will be first through public consultation | :08:41. | :08:52.
with residents, secondly impact assessments done, quality impact | :08:53. | :08:56.
assessments and rules safety assessments done. And we're it is | :08:57. | :09:02.
not advisable and not safe to do so, these measures will not be | :09:03. | :09:05.
introduced. Where are those are introduced, it will be a 12 month | :09:06. | :09:09.
period, with consultation with residents and would users on going. | :09:10. | :09:13.
`` and road users. They're regularly described | :09:14. | :09:16.
as tourism's Oscars and the small Northumberland village | :09:17. | :09:18.
of Seahouses has won two of them. The tourist body, Visit England, | :09:19. | :09:21.
judged a B and a holiday village there to be | :09:22. | :09:23.
the best of their kind in England. Our Business Correspondent, | :09:24. | :09:27.
Ian Reeve, is in Seahouses now. Those boards really reflect the | :09:28. | :09:39.
importance of tourism here. It has variously been things like tourism | :09:40. | :09:43.
and fishing port, but the pound helps keep things afloat. A tiny | :09:44. | :09:50.
village on the Northumberland coast. Boats, handmade, on the spot. This | :09:51. | :10:02.
is what used to happen on Seahouses, boat building, and tourism has taken | :10:03. | :10:07.
its place rather successfully. This B has been judged the best in | :10:08. | :10:11.
England and its high profile could strengthen yet more the local | :10:12. | :10:17.
tourist industry. There is a lot of seasonal part`time employment and we | :10:18. | :10:21.
are trying to grow that visitor economy so that visitors have | :10:22. | :10:24.
something to come and celebrate the whole year round. Incredibly, in the | :10:25. | :10:30.
same small village, this caravan park has also been called best in | :10:31. | :10:35.
its class, and this is a real economic driver. Various surveys | :10:36. | :10:40.
have been done suggesting there is in excess of ?3.5 million going into | :10:41. | :10:46.
the local economy as a result of tourism. As far as numbers that we | :10:47. | :10:53.
employ, it is in excess of 50 people in the height of season, nearly all | :10:54. | :10:58.
of those local people. Michael first worked on the holiday village site | :10:59. | :11:05.
as a 60 new gold. 26 years on, the transformation, with gymnasium and | :11:06. | :11:10.
swimming pool, she was how many more people are coming to Seahouses. `` | :11:11. | :11:15.
first worked on the site as a 16`year`old. The day`trippers you | :11:16. | :11:21.
would associate with the west of the country normally. The nature of | :11:22. | :11:26.
Seahouses tourism might be changing, bringing more affluent visitors, | :11:27. | :11:31.
chipping in more of the ?7.5 million that the wider county sees spent by | :11:32. | :11:35.
tourists every year. So tourism is big business, worth | :11:36. | :11:41.
?700 million, but could be worth more? It could, Northumberland | :11:42. | :11:48.
county council has a plan of that 700 million and wants to see 15% | :11:49. | :11:53.
more spent within the next five years, particularly targeting | :11:54. | :11:56.
Scandinavian and Baltic States tourists, but that is it from | :11:57. | :12:02.
Seahouses, I will now make my particular contribution to the | :12:03. | :12:05.
Northumberland economy, so back to you. Yes, we did spot that! Thank | :12:06. | :12:14.

worth ?1 million a year to the club. But can the town of Gateshead | :13:09. | :13:14.

here's Andrew Hartley. Town in transition, destroying the | :13:19. | :13:28.
past and rebuilding. If that club returns to the football league, it | :13:29. | :13:32.

Gateshead. I think it will help the area immensely. | :13:42. | :13:46.
One company is this shirt company, based here but trading around the | :13:47. | :13:53.
world. It is important that we as a local company in Gateshead sponsor | :13:54. | :13:59.
the football team and put something back into the community and it gives | :14:00. | :14:03.
a feel`good factor not only to us as a company but the area. The company | :14:04. | :14:08.
do not expect increased sales because their name is on the shop, | :14:09. | :14:14.
but the owner of this local pub says Gateshead's pub is making a | :14:15. | :14:19.
difference. When they play at home, as they have the last couple of | :14:20. | :14:25.
games, it attracts 8500 people and made a phenomenal difference to us. | :14:26. | :14:30.
There is an opportunity for the people of Gateshead to grab this and | :14:31. | :14:34.
bring new people to the town and see how great it is. Swansea made ?50 | :14:35. | :14:40.
million as a city out of it coming up into the Premier League. It will | :14:41. | :14:45.
not be that for a Gateshead, but could be ?50,000, half a million, so | :14:46. | :14:50.
it is what Gateshead and the Northeast make of it. But if the | :14:51. | :14:57.
town is to turn more cash, the club needs more fans, but there is a | :14:58. | :15:02.
problem. And you get a sense appear what that problem is. Right on the | :15:03. | :15:07.
doorstep of the stadium are two massive Premier League sides. To the | :15:08. | :15:13.
east, Sunderland, about seven miles away the Stadium of Light. And | :15:14. | :15:17.
across the river, three miles away, Saint James is Park, home of | :15:18. | :15:22.
Newcastle United. Newcastle attracted an average of more than | :15:23. | :15:31.
50,000 to each league `` Matt, just under 42,004 Sunderland. And with | :15:32. | :15:37.
some league matches, watched by and 604 Gateshead. We would like to | :15:38. | :15:42.
double it. That is definitely possible. If we can attract 1500 ` | :15:43. | :15:52.
2000 bands, that could make a difference. It could be an | :15:53. | :15:56.
alternative to Newcastle and Sunderland fans. There is an | :15:57. | :16:01.
opportunity to say to Newcastle and some Berlin `` Sunderland fans map | :16:02. | :16:07.
look at us. But they need to be smart with ticket pricing and in a | :16:08. | :16:12.
position where they can play at the different time to either or both of | :16:13. | :16:18.
those clubs. If the tone is going to score financially, it's football | :16:19. | :16:22.
club will have to demolish some old allegiances along the way. | :16:23. | :16:30.
And in tomorrow night's programme, we look back at the history of | :16:31. | :16:34.
Gateshead Football Club ahead of this big game at the weekend. And | :16:35. | :16:38.
the attendance figures. We have heard they have sold 7000 tickets | :16:39. | :16:42.
for Wembley. I thought it might be more. Possibly, but you can get more | :16:43. | :16:48.
tickets tomorrow and on Saturday, so they could have more than that. | :16:49. | :16:53.
Newcastle and Sunderland fans fancying a weekend away? Especially | :16:54. | :16:59.
Newcastle fans not having been to Wembley this season. | :17:00. | :17:03.
It's 15 years since Steve Harper played in goal for Newcastle in the | :17:04. | :17:12.
FA Cup final defeat by Manchester United at the old Wembley. | :17:13. | :17:15.
He's hoping to feature at the new stadium for current club | :17:16. | :17:18.
Hull City on Saturday when they take on favourites Arsenal. | :17:19. | :17:21.
But this isn't the only cup final playing on | :17:22. | :17:23.
Family and football are pretty closely entwined for Steve Harper. | :17:24. | :17:34.
You will find out in the next day or so whether he will be in goal for | :17:35. | :17:40.
Hull City or sitting on the bench at Wembley. But he has another big | :17:41. | :17:44.
game, the junior team he coaches at Newcastle School for boys, which | :17:45. | :17:48.
includes his older son James, has reached a final for ten to | :17:49. | :17:52.
12`year`olds, taking place at the training ground for Aston Villa, but | :17:53. | :17:57.
will there be a clash of dates? Fortunately, they are one week | :17:58. | :18:01.
apart. He is coming to watch our game. They will have to wait and see | :18:02. | :18:08.
selections, as would I. A double would be nice, but the important | :18:09. | :18:13.
thing for the lads is to go down and enjoy testing themselves on a | :18:14. | :18:16.
national level against similar schools. The family who cheered | :18:17. | :18:21.
Steve on at the Wembley semifinal will hope he does not lose his place | :18:22. | :18:27.
to Allan McGregor. Really nervous. I do not think I will be able to watch | :18:28. | :18:32.
the whole match without closing my eyes. And if it goes to penalties, I | :18:33. | :18:38.
might not watch. I did not see James playing in goal? He is a centre | :18:39. | :18:43.
forward, he has more sense, I told him there was no future in | :18:44. | :18:47.
goalkeeping. I am struggling to get my message through to my | :18:48. | :18:51.
three`year`old as well. Steve is not surprised his old boss held onto his | :18:52. | :18:56.
job, but there is work to be done. The football club know they need to | :18:57. | :19:00.
become active in the transfer market sooner rather than later. That will | :19:01. | :19:06.
go full to getting the fans back on board who are not happy. | :19:07. | :19:20.
And Dan Gosling is expected to leave Newcastle after four years on | :19:21. | :19:23.
Tyneside. He has been linked to a move to Bournemouth. | :19:24. | :19:29.
It's the start of cricket's T20 season tomorrow night. | :19:30. | :19:31.
The big hitting form of the game has a new sponsor, a new | :19:32. | :19:34.
Forget the Dynamos ` from now on it's the Jets and | :19:35. | :19:39.
they're hoping for a perfect take off against Worcestershire Rapids. | :19:40. | :19:59.
What do you think of the new name? It is all about entertainment, | :20:00. | :20:09.
ditching the dynamos, in favour of the Jets, linked to their sponsor | :20:10. | :20:14.
Emirates airlines, and embracing the new name. We used to call ourselves | :20:15. | :20:21.
the dominoes, to be honest, but we are the Jets now and hopefully that | :20:22. | :20:26.
sticks well. Fully, their new name might bring more success in a format | :20:27. | :20:31.
