Hello, good evening. time for the | :00:10. | :00:11.
Hello, good evening. Hundreds of English Defence League | :00:12. | :00:14.
supporters have marched through the centre of Newcastle. They were met | :00:15. | :00:17.
by a rival demonstration ` with the two groups kept apart by a massive | :00:18. | :00:20.
police presence. Peter Harris reports. | :00:21. | :00:27.
They'd come from far and wide. Several hundred English Defence | :00:28. | :00:29.
League supporters, marching through the city centre. The police say the | :00:30. | :00:34.
English Defence League had initially wanted to march through the | :00:35. | :00:37.
ethnically`mixed west end of the city. They were told they couldn't | :00:38. | :00:40.
do that, and a compromise was eventually reached last night. | :00:41. | :00:44.
Instead they made their way to the city's Leazes Park, where they were | :00:45. | :00:51.
met by a noisy counter demo. We want to give a clear message to the | :00:52. | :00:54.
English Defence League that they're not welcome. We won't confront them. | :00:55. | :00:57.
Police will be there. But we want them to hear our voice. The diverse | :00:58. | :01:01.
voice of Newcastle, that the EDL is fascism. Racism is not welcome in | :01:02. | :01:06.
our city. Inside the park the EDL group heard speeches, still angry at | :01:07. | :01:09.
being stopped from marching their preferred route to the west end. I | :01:10. | :01:23.
live in the west end... We're more than welcome. We're wanted there! | :01:24. | :01:27.
Speakers also made reference to the ongoing Northumbria Police | :01:28. | :01:29.
investigation Operation Sanctuary, into the alleged abuse of young | :01:30. | :01:32.
women. The police stress it involves people from a range of communities. | :01:33. | :01:36.
The force says the demos passed off peacefully. There's been minimal | :01:37. | :01:40.
disruption. No arrests or incidents of note. I'd like to take the | :01:41. | :01:45.
opportunity to thank the public for their patience and co`operation. The | :01:46. | :01:50.
marchers dispersed and the police say they'll have their usual patrols | :01:51. | :01:59.
in the city centre tonight. A week since the disappearance of | :02:00. | :02:02.
19`year`old Durham University student Luke Pearce, police say | :02:03. | :02:04.
they'll hand out leaflets tonight, hoping to jog people's memories. | :02:05. | :02:08.
Luke was last seen walking along the river bank in the early hours of | :02:09. | :02:11.
last Sunday morning after a night out. Officers will focus on the | :02:12. | :02:15.
Jimmy Allen's and Baths Bridge area of the city this evening. | :02:16. | :02:21.
Campaigners took to the streets of Newcastle today calling for | :02:22. | :02:23.
dedicated lanes for cyclists. The event was part of a national | :02:24. | :02:26.
campaign called Space for Cycling. And around 100 cyclists, including | :02:27. | :02:29.
young children, demonstrated their support by cycling through the city | :02:30. | :02:37.
centre. The message is give us space for | :02:38. | :02:38.
cycling. It's setting aside more space. Cycling, walking, taking the | :02:39. | :02:49.
bus... The active forms of transport can take prime position in the city. | :02:50. | :02:53.
Cars have to start to take the back seat. | :02:54. | :03:01.
Around 300 rowing crews from across the country have been taking to the | :03:02. | :03:04.
River Tees at Stockton today, as part of the annual Tees Regatta. | :03:05. | :03:08.
It's the only buoyed course in the North of England and this year's | :03:09. | :03:11.
event marks the 150th anniversary of the Tees Rowing Club, who run the | :03:12. | :03:15.
event. More than 750 rowers in all have been competing since nine | :03:16. | :03:17.
o'clock this morning. Some have travelled from as far afield as | :03:18. | :03:21.
Sussex to take part. This year's regatta has seen a large number of | :03:22. | :03:24.
school teams signing up, in preparation for the National Schools | :03:25. | :03:26.
Championships, next week. The north east is very big on rowing | :03:27. | :03:31.
at the moment. We've got some really good potential coming through. We've | :03:32. | :03:38.
got all the other GB sections covered by crews and competitors | :03:39. | :03:46.
from Tees and the Tyne. Football ` and York City just failed | :03:47. | :03:50.
to reach the League Two promotion play`off final. They needed to beat | :03:51. | :03:53.
Fleetwood in their semi final second leg last night, but it ended | :03:54. | :03:56.
scoreless. So the Lancashire club go through. | :03:57. | :04:00.
But of course hopes are high for Gateshead at Wembley tomorrow, in | :04:01. | :04:02.
their Conference playoff final against Cambridge. Full radio | :04:03. | :04:05.
commentary on BBC Newcastle. And we'll have the goals and reaction | :04:06. | :04:08.
from Wembley here on Look North tomorrow evening. | :04:09. | :04:14.
For many, the weather has been glorious today. How about tomorrow? | :04:15. | :04:15.
Jen Bartram can tell us. It looks like it will be dry and | :04:16. | :04:35.
fine. The wind will pick up slightly. 11 or 12 degrees. Sunday | :04:36. | :04:52.
has a bright start. Feeling warm once again. | :04:53. | :04:56.
That's it for now. Sunday Politics looks ahead to next week's local | :04:57. | :04:59.
elections. That's at 11am tomorrow morning, and we'll be back with the | :05:00. | :05:02.
action from Wembley tomorrow evening. Bye for now. | :05:03. | :05:09.
Good evening. Who needs an expensive holiday? Today at 24 degrees, | :05:10. | :05:18.
Suffolk was warmer than Ibiza and Crete. There was lots of warm | :05:19. | :05:21.
sunshine to | :05:22. | :05:22. |
