Hello. Ireland. And that is | :00:00. | :00:08.
Hello. Good evening. A postmortem | :00:09. | :00:11.
examination is due to be carried out on the body of a man found dead at a | :00:12. | :00:15.
property in Newcastle at just after six o'clock this morning. A cordon | :00:16. | :00:19.
is in place at Leazes Court on Barrack Road, and extra officers are | :00:20. | :00:24.
fifties has been arrested on fifties has been arrested on | :00:25. | :00:26.
suspicion of murder. Detectives are asking who may have information | :00:27. | :00:30.
contact them. It's being claimed that people's | :00:31. | :00:33.
safety could be compromised by plans to close three major police stations | :00:34. | :00:38.
overnight. Cleveland Police will shut the three stations at | :00:39. | :00:41.
Hartlepool, Stockton and Kirkleatham from ten o'clock at night until | :00:42. | :00:46.
eight in the morning. The move's part of cost`cutting measures as the | :00:47. | :00:49.
force looks to save ?26 million from its budget over the next five years. | :00:50. | :00:56.
Stuart Whincup reports. Front line policing on the streets | :00:57. | :01:00.
and on patrol. This is what Cleveland's crime commissioner | :01:01. | :01:03.
claims he's trying to protect in the budget cuts. So to save money, he's | :01:04. | :01:08.
supporting plans to close three of its main police headquarters | :01:09. | :01:10.
overnight, in Hartlepool, Stockton and Kirkleatham. It's about making | :01:11. | :01:18.
the best use of the limited resources we have. We need to make | :01:19. | :01:21.
sure the police are efficient and effective and the public have been | :01:22. | :01:24.
best served. Those stations were only receiving one or two inquiries | :01:25. | :01:28.
per night, so what we were doing was staffing a front desk for the night | :01:29. | :01:35.
and getting one or two inquiries. Most people, he says, report | :01:36. | :01:38.
incidents over the phone and rarely walk into a station. But some claim | :01:39. | :01:44.
that would lead to an increase in crime and anti`social behaviour in | :01:45. | :01:48.
those areas. I think what we're seeing is the beginning of a serious | :01:49. | :01:52.
salami slicing, which will be at the detriment of Hartlepool. To actually | :01:53. | :01:55.
close the police station to the public whilst not having a manned | :01:56. | :01:59.
station there through the night is a very dangerous step. A lot of people | :02:00. | :02:06.
go to police stations as a place of safety. Cleveland Police says it's | :02:07. | :02:10.
not unusual for stations to be closed overnight. It says many | :02:11. | :02:13.
neighbouring forces already do the same. It's promised to fit a video | :02:14. | :02:18.
phone out the front so people can contact the main office in | :02:19. | :02:21.
Middlesbrough. But opponents say that is not good enough, and it is | :02:22. | :02:25.
wrong that the doors are closed when people come here needing help. | :02:26. | :02:32.
UKIP will be hoping to follow up its local election success by winning a | :02:33. | :02:37.
North East seat in the European Parliament tonight. The votes were | :02:38. | :02:41.
cast on Thursday, and the results will be announced later this | :02:42. | :02:43.
evening, with Sunderland the location for the North East count. | :02:44. | :02:47.
There are three North East seats up for election ` eight in the North | :02:48. | :02:51.
West, which includes Cumbria, and six in Yorkshire. We'll have all the | :02:52. | :02:55.
latest from Sunderland on our late bulletin. And the results programme | :02:56. | :02:58.
starts on BBC One from 11.00 tonight. There's also coverage | :02:59. | :03:02.
online. Conservationists in County Durham | :03:03. | :03:05.
who are trying to breed a rare type of butterfly say thieves may have | :03:06. | :03:08.
inadvertently set back three years of work. A large quantity of moss | :03:09. | :03:14.
has been taken from Burnhill Nature Reserve, and as Phil Connell | :03:15. | :03:17.
reports, the moss contains a plant crucial to the butterfly's survival. | :03:18. | :03:23.
It's the kind of moss that is highly prized by gardeners. On the Burnhill | :03:24. | :03:29.
Nature Reserve, though, sphagnum moss is being used to attract a rare | :03:30. | :03:35.
type of butterfly. The caterpillars that eventually turn into these | :03:36. | :03:37.
butterflies feed on these marsh violets that grow here inside the | :03:38. | :03:43.
moss. In the last few weeks, though, it's estimated around 50 large bags | :03:44. | :03:47.
of the moss have been stolen, possibly by a professional gang | :03:48. | :03:50.
selling it to gardeners for hanging baskets. Conservationists say the | :03:51. | :03:55.
endangered butterfly, the pearl`bordered fritillary, has seen | :03:56. | :04:02.
its numbers fall by 95%. And the removal of moss from the reserve | :04:03. | :04:05.
near Consett is the last thing they need. It's extremely annoying, | :04:06. | :04:09.
because there are that many people who put that much time and effort | :04:10. | :04:13.
into creating these places to try to save this butterfly, which 15 years | :04:14. | :04:17.
ago, all we find was maybe a dozen of these butterflies. To counter the | :04:18. | :04:22.
damage, volunteers have been planting new marsh violets in areas | :04:23. | :04:25.
of moss nearby, providing a crucial food source for caterpillars that | :04:26. | :04:33.
may have survived. After almost a year as caterpillars, butterflies | :04:34. | :04:36.
will be hatching in the next few weeks. Only then will Rangers know | :04:37. | :04:40.
exactly how much damage has been caused. | :04:41. | :04:49.
So, what about the region's weather prospects for our Bank Holiday | :04:50. | :04:52.
Monday? With the outlook, here's Jennifer Bartram. | :04:53. | :04:55.
Good evening. It's certainly been a wet day across parts of the North | :04:56. | :05:01.
East and Cumbria. The showers will continue as we head through this | :05:02. | :05:04.
evening and overnight. Again, they will be heavy at times, but they | :05:05. | :05:07.
will eventually die away in the early hours of Monday morning. | :05:08. | :05:10.
Things will be dry. Temperatures overnight will fall back to ten | :05:11. | :05:13.
degrees Celsius. We could have some patches of mist and fog across parts | :05:14. | :05:17.
of Cumbria initially, but many parts will have a dry and bright start to | :05:18. | :05:21.
the bank holiday Monday. Dry through much of the day, but showers will | :05:22. | :05:25.
start to get going later on in the afternoon, mainly across parts of | :05:26. | :05:27.
the Pennines. Temperatures tomorrow doing well with highs of around 18 | :05:28. | :05:31.
degrees Celsius. As we go through the rest of the week, Tuesday is | :05:32. | :05:35.
looking like a decent day. It will be dry and cloudy for most of us, | :05:36. | :05:39.
but an area of rain is going to move in from the south`east, leading to | :05:40. | :05:42.
heavy downpours as we get into Wednesday. | :05:43. | :05:45.
And that's our summary. We're back at the later`than`usual time of | :05:46. | :05:50.
10.50 tonight, as the results are being counted in the European | :05:51. | :05:53.
Elections. Join us then if you can, and have a good evening. | :05:54. | :06:09.
Good evening. Some of us had a pretty good soaking. It downpours | :06:10. | :06:17.
around with thunder and lightning. It wasn't so bad everywhere. The | :06:18. | :06:22.
satellite picture across the Midlands, East Anglia and the south | :06:23. | :06:26.
coast, the Isle of Wight. A beautiful end to the day. You can | :06:27. | :06:33.
see further west and north and that is where the storm clouds will | :06:34. | :06:34. |
