European election results. That's all from the BBC News at Six - so | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello, welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: Bringing back the | :00:00. | :00:10.
50s. A major expansion of Beamish Museum is planned, thanks to | :00:11. | :00:13.
millions of pounds of Lottery funding. | :00:14. | :00:16.
But this market is deemed to be too old`fashioned. After 40 years, | :00:17. | :00:18.
traders have packed away their stalls for the last time. The market | :00:19. | :00:23.
has been here for a long time. It is our livelihood. It provides a good | :00:24. | :00:27.
service for the public and obviously they are taking that away. | :00:28. | :00:30.
The Army recruitment drive that has failed to take`off. Thousands of | :00:31. | :00:34.
part`time soldiers are needed. So far, fewer than 200 have signed`up. | :00:35. | :00:40.
And there is only one direction to head in for fans of the world's | :00:41. | :00:46.
biggest boy band. We have a report on preparations for the arrival of | :00:47. | :00:50.
One Direction ` and 50,000 of their fans, at Sunderland's Stadium of | :00:51. | :00:56.
Light. The Tour de France is not the only show in town this summer. We | :00:57. | :01:01.
are live with some of the world's top cyclist. `` cyclists. | :01:02. | :01:17.
Beamish, the Durham open`air museum which looks back in history, is | :01:18. | :01:20.
tonight looking forward to an exciting new future. It has won | :01:21. | :01:23.
initial funding which should lead to a massive ?11 million grant from | :01:24. | :01:26.
Heritage Lottery. That could create 100 jobs in an area which still has | :01:27. | :01:30.
some of the highest unemployment in our region. Beamish, which attracts | :01:31. | :01:35.
580,000 visitors a year, plans to use the grant to build a brand new | :01:36. | :01:38.
1950's town. Here's our correspondent, Mark Denton. | :01:39. | :01:48.
It is the 1950s. We are going a long way back. Believe it or not, I do | :01:49. | :01:57.
not remember the 1950s. But a project at Beamish will take us | :01:58. | :02:07.
back. She is housewife magazine. Beamish has been awarded a grant | :02:08. | :02:13.
from Heritage Lottery to put together a 1950s town. A second, | :02:14. | :02:21.
larger grant will then come from the same fund. Along with the Victorian | :02:22. | :02:33.
and Edwardian exhibits, visitors will soon be able to experience the | :02:34. | :02:39.
1950s. We want to go back into living memory. We are not telling | :02:40. | :02:45.
our visitors the way that it was. He died themselves around the | :02:46. | :02:50.
exhibits. They may remember some of these things. In the 1950s, it was | :02:51. | :02:58.
coming out of the war and rationing. There were huge changes | :02:59. | :03:05.
in the region. The NHS, social housing, holidays, American culture | :03:06. | :03:14.
for the first time. It was a huge change. We want to help people | :03:15. | :03:19.
remember it. One reason for the project is that Beamish have a shed | :03:20. | :03:27.
load of items. They would like to put some more of them on display. It | :03:28. | :03:37.
could also be able to `` it could also boost the local economy. Our | :03:38. | :03:44.
young people have struggled to find jobs so this will be a much`needed | :03:45. | :03:49.
boost. It may be five years before it is fully open. Let us just wait | :03:50. | :03:56.
for the telly to warm up and we can see what is on. Our correspondent is | :03:57. | :04:15.
with us now. Well, of course one of the things | :04:16. | :04:18.
about the 1950s that younger viewers might not realise is that for most | :04:19. | :04:22.
of the decade there was only one TV channel and that was us ` BBC One. | :04:23. | :04:27.
That is right, and with the help of this piece of genuine 1950's TV | :04:28. | :04:30.
technology, and a little 2014 technology, we can get a reminder of | :04:31. | :04:33.
some of the most popular shows back then. You must remember this ` Dixon | :04:34. | :04:37.
of Dock Green, with Jack Warner in the lead role. The first ever police | :04:38. | :04:41.
drama on British television. It was also the decade that brought us This | :04:42. | :04:45.
Is Your Life with the famous red book. There was also Oliver | :04:46. | :04:47.
Postgate's masterpiece ` Ivor the Engine, about a Welsh steam engine. | :04:48. | :04:51.
And one of the biggest selling points of TV sets in the 1950s came | :04:52. | :04:54.
in 1953, when the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II was televised. It | :04:55. | :04:58.
really was quite a different world. So Mark, let us be clear, Beamish | :04:59. | :05:02.
does not have all the money for this project yet. How long before it | :05:03. | :05:04.
becomes a reality? It has the initial grant. The larger | :05:05. | :05:10.
grant will come after planning permission has been granted. The | :05:11. | :05:18.
total project will cost 17 million pounds. One important thing to note | :05:19. | :05:29.
is that when they have done the 1950s Beamish plan to do the 1980s. | :05:30. | :05:44.
Well, while Beamish is preparing to recreate the 1950s, Newton Aycliffe | :05:45. | :05:46.
today said goodbye to a forty`year`old tradition. Traders in | :05:47. | :05:49.
the County Durham town held their last`ever market today. They were | :05:50. | :05:53.
given notice to quit by the owner of the shopping centre, which was home | :05:54. | :05:56.
to their pitches. It is thought the Tuesday market's image was at odds | :05:57. | :05:59.
with the newly`refurbished centre. Here is our business correspondent, | :06:00. | :06:03.
Ian Reeve. They have done this for forty years | :06:04. | :06:07.
in Newton Aycliffe. But this is the last`ever market. The owner of the | :06:08. | :06:11.
shopping centre in which it is held has told stallholders to leave. It | :06:12. | :06:15.
is thought the stalls are perceived as being too down`market for the | :06:16. | :06:17.
newly`refurbished centre. It leaves people like Neil counting the cost. | :06:18. | :06:39.
Mandy too has to find somewhere else for her busy plant stall. She has | :06:40. | :06:43.
had her pitch here for thirty`two years, but even a promise to the | :06:44. | :06:46.
centre's owner of refreshing it has not saved her pitch. Stalls. Anne | :06:47. | :07:08.
Harland, who worked in shops in the centre for twenty`five years, thinks | :07:09. | :07:11.
the end of the market will not do much for Newton Aycliffe's economy. | :07:12. | :07:28.
Whether they continue to do so will be seen over the coming weeks and | :07:29. | :07:49.
months. Cumbria is the worst area in England | :07:50. | :07:53.
for the number of young people being injured in car crashes. According to | :07:54. | :07:56.
figures from the RAC Foundation, drivers between the age of seventeen | :07:57. | :08:00.
and nineteen make up 1.5% of all motorists. But in Cumbria, the | :08:01. | :08:03.
number of drivers in that age group injured on the roads is just under | :08:04. | :08:09.
16%. I don't think that it is a losing battle. While 16% is a high | :08:10. | :08:12.
number in proportion, the overall number of people killed, or | :08:13. | :08:15.
seriously injured, on the roads in Cumbria has fallen dramatically over | :08:16. | :08:20.
the last few years. We have targeted 17`21 year olds for quite a long | :08:21. | :08:24.
time now for road safety measures ` providing advice and education ` to | :08:25. | :08:28.
try and drive down the number of incidents involving young people. | :08:29. | :08:36.
The people of Yarm are voting on whether to remain with Stockton | :08:37. | :08:39.
Council or join Hambleton in North Yorkshire. The Yarm For Yorkshire | :08:40. | :08:42.
campaign accused Stockton Council of ignoring local people on issues such | :08:43. | :08:47.
as new housing and parking. Opponents say the referendum, which | :08:48. | :08:50.
has been called by the town council, is not legally binding and is a | :08:51. | :08:53.
waste of taxpayers' money. The polls close at 9PM tonight. | :08:54. | :08:59.
Cumbria County Council wants the Department for Transport to | :09:00. | :09:01.
reinstate a Sunday train service on the west coast line. The Council | :09:02. | :09:05.
says a Sunday service would be a big help to the county's economy. It has | :09:06. | :09:08.
asked the Department for Transport for ?315,000 to run trains from | :09:09. | :09:12.
Carlisle to Barrow on a six`month trial. It says that would increase | :09:13. | :09:16.
the number of tourists and make life easier for Sellafield staff on | :09:17. | :09:20.
weekend shifts. An Army recruitment drive to sign up | :09:21. | :09:24.
thousands of new part`time soldiers is falling short of ambitious | :09:25. | :09:27.
targets. The need is for 11,000 more trained reserves, formerly called | :09:28. | :09:33.
the Territorial Army, by 2018. But the latest figures show an increase | :09:34. | :09:37.
of just 170. Olivia Richwald was given exclusive access to see | :09:38. | :09:40.
Yorkshire's reservists training out in Germany. | :09:41. | :09:47.
This is the future of the British Army. Among them nurses, teachers, | :09:48. | :09:52.
business leaders, and bin men. Spare`time soldiers who train in | :09:53. | :09:56.
warfare at the weekend. Now an increasingly important part of our | :09:57. | :10:00.
Armed Forces. Among the youngest, bank worker Rob Allen from Stockton. | :10:01. | :10:05.
I think your civilian job has to be your priority, especially when you | :10:06. | :10:09.
have bills to pay. For me personally, the TA feels like a | :10:10. | :10:13.
top`up or an add`on. The experience is the reason why I am in there ` to | :10:14. | :10:18.
be honest. About 8000 regular, full`time soldiers have been made | :10:19. | :10:22.
redundant in the past few years. In their place, and by 2018, the Army | :10:23. | :10:26.
wants to recruit 11,000 more reserves, with a further 8000 in | :10:27. | :10:32.
training. But so far, the figure has only increased by 170. I have been | :10:33. | :10:37.
with Yorkshire Regiment Reserves for three days now here in Germany. In | :10:38. | :10:41.
truth, the battalion here is one`third empty. There is space for | :10:42. | :10:47.
another hundred recruits at least. I think that we need to make sure that | :10:48. | :10:51.
we give ourselves enough time to achieve the targets. There is always | :10:52. | :10:55.
a desire to do it right now. We have to keep concentrating on the fact | :10:56. | :10:58.
that we have given ourselves a target of six years to achieve this | :10:59. | :11:03.
and we need to get on with it, get our heads down, and make it work. | :11:04. | :11:06.
Incentives to sign up have been improved. You can get ?2,300 in your | :11:07. | :11:10.
first year of training alone. Some of the guys here earn up to ?7000 a | :11:11. | :11:15.
year. Major Allan, a music teacher, runs the recruitment programme in | :11:16. | :11:21.
Middlesbrough. We have managed to get seven new people fully through | :11:22. | :11:28.
the enlistment process this year. That is surely good. We are getting | :11:29. | :11:32.
people from a variety of sources ` local colleges, young students, and | :11:33. | :11:35.
some of the ex`regulars that left us over the transition period. In the | :11:36. | :11:39.
past, being a reserve has been seen as a hobby more than a real job. In | :11:40. | :11:43.
the future, the Army hopes that the improved pay and training will make | :11:44. | :11:48.
it attractive as a part`time career. Only when that public attitude to | :11:49. | :11:51.
reserves is transformed can mass recruitment be truly successful. BBC | :11:52. | :12:05.
Look North, Germany. Northumbria Police officers are | :12:06. | :12:08.
among the fittest in the country. Northumbria was one of only two | :12:09. | :12:11.
forces in England and Wales where all the officers passed a new | :12:12. | :12:14.
fitness test ` the other one was Humberside. Data is still not yet | :12:15. | :12:17.
available for four forces, including Cumbria. Nationally, almost 900 | :12:18. | :12:20.
officers failed the bleep fitness test, which will become compulsory | :12:21. | :12:29.
in September. Would`be boxing champions are to be | :12:30. | :12:33.
offered a new way towards their dream in County Durham, with the | :12:34. | :12:37.
help of a local world champion. Stuart Hall, who holds the IBF | :12:38. | :12:40.
Bantamweight title, is launching a Boxing Academy in his home town of | :12:41. | :12:44.
Darlington. It will offer a BTec Sports Course in Boxing. It is as | :12:45. | :12:48.
good as three A`levels, and, for the successful candidates, it could open | :12:49. | :12:51.
up a whole new world. Damian O'Neil reports. | :12:52. | :13:06.
What many boxers lack is a structured path. A new academy in | :13:07. | :13:11.
Darlington aims to provide this for students. For Stuart Hall, who in | :13:12. | :13:18.
his own words often went off the rails when he was younger, said the | :13:19. | :13:22.
opportunity would have been good for him. It could have changed my life. | :13:23. | :13:30.
I love boxing but I was not too fussed about getting stuck in. The | :13:31. | :13:35.
course will involve the elite training and a broader curriculum. | :13:36. | :13:41.
Boxing is the icing on the cake. They will be doing the same as other | :13:42. | :13:48.
students, including English, maths, sports science, and anything that | :13:49. | :13:52.
could open up their opportunities in the sport industry. It is hoped that | :13:53. | :13:58.
the Academy can measure the success of others, such as this football | :13:59. | :14:06.
academy where students have gone on to careers and further education. | :14:07. | :14:11.
People need discipline and education. Hopefully we can pass our | :14:12. | :14:22.
experience and our tough times to the heads and give them an | :14:23. | :14:26.
opportunity to find a career. Everyone thinks that boxers are | :14:27. | :14:33.
tough. Sometimes they are just crying for some help. This is a | :14:34. | :14:41.
perfect opportunity to do so. The story of a man saved by boxing is an | :14:42. | :14:46.
old one. But this academy could be a realistic path to a world | :14:47. | :14:51.
championship will stop it also means an education for people who | :14:52. | :14:54.
otherwise may not have considered it. | :14:55. | :15:00.
Coming up next, we report from Sunderland as One Direction fever | :15:01. | :15:04.
hits the city. And we are live from Durham, as the city prepares for | :15:05. | :15:10.
more cycling action like this. The weather will continue up and | :15:11. | :15:16.
down. There will be wet weather followed by dry and bright | :15:17. | :15:20.
conditions at the end of the week. More soon. | :15:21. | :15:29.
They are the world's biggest boy`band and they are returning to | :15:30. | :15:32.
the North East. More than 50,000 fans will be at the Stadium of Light | :15:33. | :15:36.
in Sunderland tomorrow to see One Direction. It is one of only four UK | :15:37. | :15:42.
venues to host their Where We Are world tour. And those fans will no | :15:43. | :15:46.
doubt be relieved to hear a Metro strike, which would have disrupted | :15:47. | :15:49.
their travel plans, has been called off. So now, it is all systems go, | :15:50. | :15:58.
as Stephanie Cleasby reports. One Direction are the richest young | :15:59. | :16:09.
men in British history. They are under way to Sunderland. Are you to | :16:10. | :16:18.
One Direction fans? Yes. Do you have a favourite? Yes. Nile. This will be | :16:19. | :16:38.
the highest profile events so far. They are opening in Sunderland and | :16:39. | :16:43.
it is amazing. By the end of the year, they will have done 17 | :16:44. | :16:49.
concerts. It will bring economic benefits to the region. It is | :16:50. | :16:52.
important that we deliver these events for the club and the city. | :16:53. | :16:58.
Excitement is building. Fans are hoping to catch a glimpse of One | :16:59. | :17:04.
Direction. What do you like about One Direction? The personality. They | :17:05. | :17:12.
are very funny. They messed about all the time. They are not like | :17:13. | :17:17.
stereotypical bands. Are you excited? Yes. Many will be aged | :17:18. | :17:34.
12`16. We have split the entry system into four sections. People | :17:35. | :17:40.
will get scanned in and wrist bandage. They will stay there for | :17:41. | :17:45.
the whole concert. We have to hydrate everyone. There is water | :17:46. | :17:57.
available. In 24`hour words, over 50,000 fans will come here to see | :17:58. | :18:04.
One Direction. Work is under way to build the stage and it is top | :18:05. | :18:11.
secret. Fans are being told to plan their journey to the stadium | :18:12. | :18:15.
carefully. They may also need waterproof clothing. Sunderland will | :18:16. | :18:27.
be rocking tomorrow night. And in tomorrow night's programme we will | :18:28. | :18:30.
be reporting live from Sunderland as the One Direction invasion of the | :18:31. | :18:39.
city reaches its climax. Time for sport now, and it is just | :18:40. | :18:43.
over a month until cycling's greatest race, the Tour de France, | :18:44. | :18:46.
sets off from our region. North Yorkshire will play host to the | :18:47. | :18:50.
Grand Depart on the 5th of July and as the preparations continue, | :18:51. | :18:53.
tension builds. And there is more for cycling fans to get excited | :18:54. | :18:56.
about tonight in Durham. Dawn is there for us now ` tell us more | :18:57. | :19:00.
Dawn! The atmosphere is hot here as you | :19:01. | :19:17.
can tell. We are live in Durham. People are competing to find out who | :19:18. | :19:23.
will compete in the Tour de France. The competition is back in the city | :19:24. | :19:30.
for the fifth year. One of the copywriters me now. We must be doing | :19:31. | :19:37.
something right in Durham for the race to come back. We are | :19:38. | :19:42.
delighted. It brings people onto the streets. There have been fantastic | :19:43. | :19:49.
crowds. Hopefully there will be several thousand people here | :19:50. | :19:52.
tonight. There are events and festivals. There were 12,000 | :19:53. | :19:59.
spectators last year. Is there a greater interest in cycling in | :20:00. | :20:07.
Durham nine? I think so. The Tour de France is coming in a few weeks. | :20:08. | :20:13.
Christian, I know that you won here last year. What is so difficult | :20:14. | :20:24.
about it? The course is difficult. Not everyone can write well on it. | :20:25. | :20:31.
It is very challenging. How nerve racking is it? If the weather is OK | :20:32. | :20:41.
then it will be OK. But if it rains, it will be slippy. We are just | :20:42. | :20:51.
starting to feel some rain. If it rains, it will be quite difficult on | :20:52. | :21:07.
the route. It should be fun. From two wheels to four now and the | :21:08. | :21:10.
50th anniversary of the Croft motor circuit, on the outskirts of | :21:11. | :21:13.
Darlington. It actually began life back in 1940, when it was built as | :21:14. | :21:17.
an airfield to be used by Bomber Command in the Second World War. But | :21:18. | :21:21.
the cars moved in during the 1960s and, among the vintage models | :21:22. | :21:24.
celebrating the track's half century, a face you'd normally see | :21:25. | :21:26.
in the kitchen. Faster and slicker the new models | :21:27. | :21:40.
may be, but cars of a certain age just have that touch of class. Past | :21:41. | :21:43.
and present were on show here at Croft to mark a milestone in the | :21:44. | :21:46.
circuit's chequered history. From just down the road in Malton, a fan | :21:47. | :21:50.
who is used to getting his hands dirty. Welcome to the show. Here in | :21:51. | :22:02.
the studio today are two of the country's most exciting chefs. I | :22:03. | :22:05.
never really got into racing until about two years ago. A friend of | :22:06. | :22:10.
mine said, why do you not give it a go? I did my race licence, got in my | :22:11. | :22:14.
first race car, and qualified and finished in the top ten. Ever since | :22:15. | :22:24.
then, I have the bug now. This is the latest one in the collection ` | :22:25. | :22:28.
it is the blue mini that I raced last year. And I won in that one. | :22:29. | :22:32.
Yes, it is good fun. What was your first trip like to Croft? I have | :22:33. | :22:36.
done Croft for two years running. Last year, they put me at the back | :22:37. | :22:40.
of the grid because of a certain BBC show that I do on a Saturday | :22:41. | :22:46.
morning. I was twelfth by the first corner and managed to get it down to | :22:47. | :22:50.
seventh. I had a good race. But I have only raced here twice. So I'm | :22:51. | :22:54.
looking forward to the historic meet this year. The British Touring Car | :22:55. | :22:57.
Championships are back at Croft next month. But that weekend in early | :22:58. | :23:00.
August is a key date on the calendar. How has Croft survived | :23:01. | :23:04.
when a lot of others have fallen by the wayside? Sensible management and | :23:05. | :23:07.
enthusiasm from the owners and the organising clubs. I think historic | :23:08. | :23:10.
racing is going through a good time just now because the grids are big, | :23:11. | :23:14.
the racing is good, the cars are exceptional, and the marshals like | :23:15. | :23:17.
it because they like a lot of activity and we give them that. | :23:18. | :23:32.
Staying with motor racing ` congratulations to Graeme Lowden, | :23:33. | :23:35.
boss and founder of the Formula One Marussia team. You might remember we | :23:36. | :23:39.
caught up with Graeme a few months ago on a trip home to Corbridge in | :23:40. | :23:43.
Northumberland, ahead of the new F1 season. Well, on Sunday at the | :23:44. | :23:46.
Monaco Grand Prix, Frenchman Jules Bianchi scored Marussia's very first | :23:47. | :23:49.
championship point, after a wait of four and a half seasons. Bianchi | :23:50. | :23:52.
came in ninth. Graeme said it was worth the wait! Some good and bad | :23:53. | :23:57.
news on the athletics front ` Teesside sprinter Richard Kilty was | :23:58. | :24:00.
part of the Great Britain's men's four X 100m relay team that won | :24:01. | :24:04.
bronze at the IAAF World Relay Championships in the Bahamas. But | :24:05. | :24:06.
there is disappointment for Teesside long`jumper Chris Tomlinson who's | :24:07. | :24:09.
lost his British record to Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford. | :24:10. | :24:12.
British Athletics has ratified Rutherford's jump of 8.51 metres | :24:13. | :24:15.
that he produced in California last month. Tomlinson complained the | :24:16. | :24:24.
jump, captured on video, was "a huge foul". But the committee said it | :24:25. | :24:27.
wasn't an official video and not taken in line with the board. The | :24:28. | :24:30.
jump beat Tomlinson's record by 16cm. On to cricket, and the Roses | :24:31. | :24:35.
match at Headingley, Yorkshire skipper Andrew Gale was left | :24:36. | :24:38.
stranded on 95 not out, as the county were bowled out by Lancashire | :24:39. | :24:48.
for 243. Lancs have now stretched their lead. Time for the weather. | :24:49. | :25:05.
The weather will be variable over the next few days. Tomorrow and | :25:06. | :25:11.
tomorrow night there will be wet weather. There is a weather front | :25:12. | :25:28.
that is coming close to us. That is what is bringing us the rain. There | :25:29. | :25:38.
is some rain already. It will become more heavy and prolonged later in | :25:39. | :25:48.
the night. Temperatures tonight, 10 Celsius. Tomorrow, it does not look | :25:49. | :26:00.
great. A Met office warning for Yorkshire because of the ongoing | :26:01. | :26:05.
rain tomorrow. There will be some dry periods. But in the afternoon | :26:06. | :26:10.
there will be rain almost everywhere. Temperatures, 15 | :26:11. | :26:25.
Celsius. That is tomorrow. Here is the weather front bringing us the | :26:26. | :26:30.
rain. On Thursday and Friday, high pressure should bring drier weather. | :26:31. | :26:38.
It is not going to be very warm at the end of the week, but it will be | :26:39. | :26:48.
drier on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures in the high teens. If | :26:49. | :27:04.
you are going to a concert in Sunderland tonight, bring the | :27:05. | :27:10.
waterproof clothing. Thank you. The Prime Minister has | :27:11. | :27:21.
arrived in Brussels to discuss the implications of the weekend's | :27:22. | :27:28.
sweeping gains by anti`EU parties. And Beamish Museum has been given a | :27:29. | :27:32.
lottery grant to help create a 1950s town. After today's initial grant | :27:33. | :27:35.
it's likely another eleven million pounds will follow at the end of | :27:36. | :27:39.
next year. We will see you tomorrow. Goodbye. | :27:40. | :27:45. |
