Following the money trail. it's goodbye are from me, on BBC One | :00:00. | :00:07.
Convicted fraudster John Darwin is forced to pay up ` | :00:08. | :00:10.
but the authorities aren't finished with him yet. | :00:11. | :00:19.
He is yet to fully satisfy his conviction order. We will seek to | :00:20. | :00:25.
revisit him again so the money is repaid. | :00:26. | :00:27.

''Criminals should be warned ` their crimes will come back to | :01:12. | :01:14.
That was the message for John Darwin the canoe fraudster ` | :01:15. | :01:19.
who was today ordered to pay back ?40,000 after he conned insurance | :01:20. | :01:23.
The 63`year`old was forced to hand back the money after a Proceeds | :01:24. | :01:28.
of Crime Act hearing ` at Teesside Crown Court ` | :01:29. | :01:31.
heard he'd received a lump sum after two of his pensions matured. | :01:32. | :01:34.
His former wife ` Anne Darwin ` has already paid back ?500,000 that | :01:35. | :01:38.
she made from the crime which made headlines around the world. | :01:39. | :01:41.
Back in front of the cameras and still it seems with no regrets. | :01:42. | :01:49.
It all started with that huge search operation back in 2002 ` | :01:50. | :02:04.
when John Darwin went missing in his canoe in the North Sea. | :02:05. | :02:07.
His wife Anne collected more than ?500,000 in life insurance payouts, | :02:08. | :02:14.
while he hid at home in Seaton Carew. | :02:15. | :02:16.
Then that famous photograph emerged, showing the couple together | :02:17. | :02:21.
in Panama, when he was supposed to be dead. | :02:22. | :02:23.
They were both sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to pay | :02:24. | :02:27.
back the money they'd conned out of the insurance companies. | :02:28. | :02:30.
Before today's hearing, John Darling had been claiming | :02:31. | :02:33.
benefits and he has only paid back ?121 of the ?679,000 he owed. | :02:34. | :02:43.
In recent months, he had received lump`sum payments | :02:44. | :02:50.
through to pensions he had received during his time as a teacher | :02:51. | :02:53.
That is where this ?40,000 has come from. | :02:54. | :02:56.
The police claimed this wasn't the end and Darwin still owed ?639,000 | :02:57. | :02:59.
from the money he made when he lied to the life insurance companies. | :03:00. | :03:03.
And detectives said they were still seeking that money. | :03:04. | :03:14.
Mr Darwin is still yet to fully satisfy | :03:15. | :03:17.
If he comes into assets in the future we will seek to speak | :03:18. | :03:21.
to him again until of money is paid in full. | :03:22. | :03:24.
People think he has got off quite easily. | :03:25. | :03:26.
We have identified ?40,000 on this occasion and if we identify | :03:27. | :03:31.
further assets in the future, we will ask the court to revisit the | :03:32. | :03:34.
The court heard Darwin's ex`wife Anne has already repaid more than | :03:35. | :03:39.
?500,000 from the money she made and the authorities are still | :03:40. | :03:42.
Detectives said criminals like the Darwins should be warned that the | :03:43. | :03:46.
money they made will be recovered and the crimes they committed will | :03:47. | :03:49.
Why has and had to pay back, but John has not paid back all of it. It | :03:50. | :04:09.
has been easier to get the money back from there because he was | :04:10. | :04:13.
supposed to be dead. All the money went into her name. The properties | :04:14. | :04:17.
and insurance all went to hear so it was easier for that. The ?700,000 | :04:18. | :04:27.
that he made, detectives say they believe you got that over the course | :04:28. | :04:33.
of four years but they don't believe he has the money today. They were | :04:34. | :04:40.
saying that when that money comes, if he does get it, they will look to | :04:41. | :04:44.
claw some of that back. The reality is that unless something dramatic | :04:45. | :04:48.
happens they won't get anything like this ?600,000 he still owes. | :04:49. | :04:57.
The Japanese train builder, Hitachi has given contracts to 35 regional | :04:58. | :05:00.
companies involved in building its new factory at Newton Aycliffe. | :05:01. | :05:03.
The company says its part of a pledge to keep its supply chain | :05:04. | :05:07.
"as local as possible," and comes on the day when it | :05:08. | :05:10.
revealed the progress being made in building the County Durham plant. | :05:11. | :05:13.
Here's our Business Correspondent, Ian Reeve. | :05:14. | :05:16.
Hitachi let us film its new train`building factory | :05:17. | :05:22.
for no other reason than to say "it's finally here." | :05:23. | :05:25.
A ten year`long plan being made flesh. | :05:26. | :05:27.
It's already won two contracts to replace aging rolling stock, | :05:28. | :05:29.
We are looking at all of the electrification projects that | :05:30. | :05:35.
The massive investment of the government has put an end in | :05:36. | :05:41.
We are looking at all of those projects and all of those contracts. | :05:42. | :05:46.
But the owner of the site wants it to become even bigger. | :05:47. | :05:49.
A centre for train building, with suppliers all | :05:50. | :05:52.
around the plant, creating more than the 700 already promised jobs. | :05:53. | :05:55.
For a number of years people have talked about it. | :05:56. | :05:59.
The contracts were signed but what we are now seeing is a reality. | :06:00. | :06:03.
Work has gone ahead on site and we see that as a catalyst | :06:04. | :06:07.
for the development of the rest of the site as well. | :06:08. | :06:10.
The Hitachi project has already seen some spin`offs. | :06:11. | :06:12.
Neil's fabrication company in tiny Middleton in Teesdale has | :06:13. | :06:16.
seen just one of 35 regional contracts placed by Hitachi. | :06:17. | :06:21.
His business has supplied the fencing around the site, | :06:22. | :06:24.
It kind of gives us a bit of interest in the site | :06:25. | :06:38.
We're not just their doing another job. | :06:39. | :06:42.
It is a job there to be recognised for years down the line. | :06:43. | :06:46.
And not too many years down the line. | :06:47. | :06:48.
2016, in fact, should see the first trains coming | :06:49. | :06:51.
New research claims In Vitro Fertilisation services in the | :06:52. | :07:01.
The fertility campaign group ` IVF Yes ` says couples in our region are | :07:02. | :07:07.
six times more likely to conceive through IVF than in the South East. | :07:08. | :07:11.
They claim there's a postcode lottery when it comes to accessing | :07:12. | :07:14.
Sunderland is recovering from One Direction mania. | :07:15. | :07:21.
The world's biggest boyband performed at the Stadium of Light | :07:22. | :07:23.
More than 50,000 fans attended, making it the highest`profile event | :07:24. | :07:27.
It's hoped the success of the gig will help attract more | :07:28. | :07:32.
The creation of a community centre which won ?500,000 of lottery | :07:33. | :07:39.
funding ` may not go ahead, because of an electricity cable. | :07:40. | :07:43.
It was hoped preparatory work would begin soon on the site in | :07:44. | :07:46.
But the local group behind the scheme says it's being held back | :07:47. | :07:50.
by ongoing negotiations about the cost of moving the overhead cable. | :07:51. | :07:56.
Electricity North West ` which will be responsible for taking | :07:57. | :07:59.
it down ` say it's doing all it can to move the project forward. | :08:00. | :08:02.
But the future of this power cable appears to be putting | :08:03. | :08:10.
the creation of a community centre and shop in Ennerdale at risk. | :08:11. | :08:13.
It has to be removed and re`routed before | :08:14. | :08:16.
But the Ennerdale Centre team says Electricity North West has failed to | :08:17. | :08:22.
offer them an affordable and acceptable solution. | :08:23. | :08:26.
They are limiting our ability to deliver our project. | :08:27. | :08:30.
If that is not David and Goliath I don't know what is. | :08:31. | :08:34.
They are a barrier to this community making | :08:35. | :08:36.
Somebody from the Cabinet office visited a couple weeks back. | :08:37. | :08:43.
He was collecting evidence of those sorts of barriers where | :08:44. | :08:46.
local communities were coming up against bureaucracies, and as | :08:47. | :08:50.
When making their bid for ?500,000 of lottery funding, they were told | :08:51. | :09:00.
But the community group asked for another apparently easier | :09:01. | :09:06.
solution to be considered, which would run through a trench provided | :09:07. | :09:11.
by the centre, rather than over the poles in neighbours' gardens. | :09:12. | :09:14.
Now we have the proposition of not enough money and certainly | :09:15. | :09:23.
not within the timescale that the Lottery want us to meet. | :09:24. | :09:28.
We are caught in a difficult situation. | :09:29. | :09:31.
We have an electricity cable and absurd bills. | :09:32. | :09:36.
If the work can't be done for the original price quoted and the | :09:37. | :09:41.
electricity company can't get their site to do it before September, then | :09:42. | :09:46.
it looks like the community centre, with years of planning and hard | :09:47. | :09:50.
A spokesman for the company said the company would not be interviewed | :09:51. | :09:57.
on the project as it felt had no case to answer. | :09:58. | :10:00.
He explained the quotes have been provided at the request of | :10:01. | :10:03.
the community and the prices reflect the cost of the work involved. | :10:04. | :10:08.
The company says it will continue to work with the community to find | :10:09. | :10:12.
Now, how well`up are you on children's TV programmes? | :10:13. | :10:22.
If not, then Newsround and Blue Peter must, surely? | :10:23. | :10:26.
Well, they're all broadcasting live from Tyneside. | :10:27. | :10:33.
Because the BBC's children's channel CBBC ` has launched three days | :10:34. | :10:36.
of programmes and events on Gateshead Quayside. | :10:37. | :10:38.
Our correspondent, Peter Harris ` who doesn't have a Blue Peter badge | :10:39. | :10:41.
One of the highlights was a speaking dog. He was one of the highlights | :10:42. | :10:51.
because a speaking dog. He was one of the highlights because the kids | :10:52. | :10:58.
we also had a live Blue Peter on the main stage. We'll be speaking more | :10:59. | :11:03.
about that but first, here is one I made earlier. This is one way to | :11:04. | :11:08.
make kids like vegetables. Why it up and turn it to a musical instrument. | :11:09. | :11:14.
This is the road show, a bit like a carnival but were some of the bigger | :11:15. | :11:18.
names in modern children's TV thrown in. The kids have the new proud? | :11:19. | :11:26.
They have. The Geordie families in general. It has been a great place. | :11:27. | :11:32.
Once the weather `ese, the crowds came in and a chance to take part in | :11:33. | :11:38.
a live television. This is a rehearsal denied's Blue Peter. It is | :11:39. | :11:43.
a number of shows which will go out live. I can't recognise the | :11:44. | :11:51.
presenters. Star of the show today was this dog. He talks and he has | :11:52. | :11:56.
attitude. It was funny when he was trying to get people to make weird | :11:57. | :12:04.
noises. He came up with a lot of funny names and do strange things. | :12:05. | :12:12.
He dresses in strange costumes. Children's TV has a close | :12:13. | :12:15.
relationship with this region. Many of its dramas are made here and the | :12:16. | :12:19.
road show gives a chance for the stars to come here on a stage near | :12:20. | :12:27.
you. I mentioned Blue Peter. The current presenters are joining us | :12:28. | :12:31.
now. Hello there. You have your badges on there. Performing live in | :12:32. | :12:37.
a place like there's compared to the studio, how much of a buzz was that? | :12:38. | :12:43.
We have so many kids here who are of red. We have come to Newcastle, a | :12:44. | :12:49.
city which doesn't get that much attention in the UK and give the | :12:50. | :12:53.
kids an opportunity to make us a tangible thing they can touch. We | :12:54. | :12:58.
felt the energy which was amazing. We were jumping up and down. This | :12:59. | :13:06.
road show a year ago when it was in Leeds, some big opportunity came to | :13:07. | :13:13.
you. It was. I entered a competition to become the next Blue Peter | :13:14. | :13:17.
presenter. I won it last in Leeds and I was selected and I was so | :13:18. | :13:22.
happy. It is quite emotional to be back here, to be the other side of | :13:23. | :13:29.
the camera. Can you get them to produce me with a Blue Peter barge. | :13:30. | :13:37.
You have to own your badge. You have to write into the show `` Blue Peter | :13:38. | :13:48.
barge. It gives people the chance to become a presenter as well as having | :13:49. | :14:03.
a cool badge. Who was a Blue Peter presenter from the 1970s? John | :14:04. | :14:13.
Noakes. Named the dog in the 1980s. Shared a name of a pop star. You are | :14:14. | :14:27.
testing me. Name the famous Blue Peter Gardner from the 70s and | :14:28. | :14:38.
1980s. This is testing me. You got it right. We will be back here | :14:39. | :14:41.
shortly. Whether it's best`selling books, | :14:42. | :14:46.
or the top TV dramas, crime`fiction is something we just | :14:47. | :14:48.
can't get enough of. And many avid readers and viewers, | :14:49. | :14:51.
it seems, want to be crime writers. Well, this weekend sees | :14:52. | :14:54.
the first crime`writing festival in the North East ` at Northumbria | :14:55. | :14:58.
University in Newcastle ` where would`be authors and scriptwriters | :14:59. | :15:01.
will mingle for inspiration ` And as Gerry Jackson explains | :15:02. | :15:04.
for tonight's Look North Report, it's the little details that can | :15:05. | :15:08.
make all the difference. Few of us like to think about our | :15:09. | :15:13.
own mortality or that of our loved ones, but let's face it, we're quite | :15:14. | :15:18.
happy to be entertained ` by death. And the startling number of people | :15:19. | :15:29.
killed off on our TV and cinema screens, not to mention in novels, | :15:30. | :15:33.
makes dying a thriving business. Just look at the number of recent | :15:34. | :15:38.
crime successes on television. Whether American epics, Nordic noir, | :15:39. | :15:43.
or home`grown homicide. Of course, not all crime fiction | :15:44. | :15:51.
needs a body count, but if you pardon the expression, | :15:52. | :15:55.
it won't do you any harm. So crime is | :15:56. | :15:58.
a competitive business and not just People watch so many crime dramas, | :15:59. | :16:12.
one kind or the other. They are very quick at picking up clues and also | :16:13. | :16:22.
seen when something is not right. In something in accurate was in the | :16:23. | :16:28.
middle of the plot in the region is `` readers stumbled over it, you | :16:29. | :16:30.
would lose their belief. Experts like these will be | :16:31. | :16:39.
at this weekend's conference What do we have here. They died if | :16:40. | :16:59.
you hours ago. When it comes a film and television these days every | :17:00. | :17:06.
little detail can be vital. Things like the diameter of the blood | :17:07. | :17:14.
next`day body. It is important in relation to crime fiction when | :17:15. | :17:20.
writing it. People go to great lengths to betray the right details | :17:21. | :17:26.
for the right location. Ultimately that is what we do. We look for | :17:27. | :17:33.
that. Even a make believe we need to get this right? Yes. This is why you | :17:34. | :17:42.
need the experts. You will find the most high`profile crime writers | :17:43. | :17:49.
collaborating with us. There's a system of the major crime writers | :17:50. | :17:54.
and it keeps them on their toes. It also gives them many more devices to | :17:55. | :18:00.
explore. These people could be ex`detectives, real`life lawyers and | :18:01. | :18:04.
expert trial witnesses, just a sort of help on hand at this conference | :18:05. | :18:13.
at Northumbria University. You have been giving a hardware device and | :18:14. | :18:25.
not accessed it. Will be fine the next crime fiction writer? We do | :18:26. | :18:31.
like them to be a bit of a maverick. We like them to be flawed characters | :18:32. | :18:34.
because we are flawed and we identify with them. The reason we | :18:35. | :18:38.
like them is because they impose order on chaos and that is what we | :18:39. | :18:40.
would all like to do. Now, while fans of the Boy Band, | :18:41. | :18:53.
One Direction, were getting ready for the first of the support acts | :18:54. | :18:56.
at the Stadium of Light last night, Sunderland were announcing a | :18:57. | :19:00.
two`year`deal for the man who guided them to Premier League | :19:01. | :19:03.
safety against all the odds. So Gus Poyet won't be moving back to | :19:04. | :19:05.
the South Coast with Southampton He's been described as a miracle | :19:06. | :19:09.
worker ` and after masterminding Sunderland's great escape ` there's | :19:10. | :19:32.
renewed joy on Wearside as head coach Gus Poyet's signed a two`year | :19:33. | :19:37.
deal to stay at the Stadium of Light I was over the moon. I thought he | :19:38. | :19:52.
might go to Southampton. Luckily he has signed. It is great. Good news | :19:53. | :19:58.
for the city. And for the club and bands. It has given everybody hope | :19:59. | :20:03.
because when are now looking forward. We are not looking | :20:04. | :20:08.
backwards or stagnating. Any manager who gets us to a cup final and stays | :20:09. | :20:11.
in the premiership is fantastic. Sunderland won just under a third | :20:12. | :20:13.
of their league games under Poyet ` but despite this, | :20:14. | :20:17.
what the Uruguyan achieved with the Black Cats last season may not | :20:18. | :20:19.
be repeated anytime soon. Looking destined for relegation, he | :20:20. | :20:22.
led them to Premier League survival with an impressive four wins in a | :20:23. | :20:25.
row towards the end of the season. He also notched up two derby | :20:26. | :20:29.
victories, led them to the League Cup final | :20:30. | :20:31.
and the FA Cup quarter finals too. It is good. We have changed managers | :20:32. | :20:44.
far too often we just got us in a bad situation. It was a panic | :20:45. | :20:52.
sacking of Martin O'Neill. Then we were miles behind, bottom of the | :20:53. | :20:57.
league. It has taken quite a long time to get back on track. It is | :20:58. | :21:03.
just reward that he should be allowed another couple of seasons to | :21:04. | :21:09.
see what he can do. The crew were packing up to leave the stage. Gus | :21:10. | :21:14.
Poyet is now settling into the long term. The challenge is now to bring | :21:15. | :21:17.
Premier league stability to Sunderland. | :21:18. | :21:21.
Meanwhile former Sunderland striker Ryan Noble is one of eleven players | :21:22. | :21:24.
released by defeated Conference play`off finalists Gateshead. | :21:25. | :21:29.
Multi gold medal`winning Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey has been confirmed | :21:30. | :21:34.
as one of the big names to be racing in the Curlew Cup in Northumberland | :21:35. | :21:38.
next month as part of the Virgin Money Cyclone Festival of Cycling. | :21:39. | :21:45.
Finally, tonight's regional speedway derby between Redcar | :21:46. | :21:47.
and Berwick has been postponed as has Workington's Premier League | :21:48. | :21:50.
fixture at Sheffield, which has also fallen foul of the weather. | :21:51. | :21:54.
Latest news of Durham v Lancashire in the T20 cricket, though, | :21:55. | :21:57.
Time to head back to Gateshead now and rejoin Peter Harris for more | :21:58. | :22:09.
Peter, plenty more to come to entertain | :22:10. | :22:12.
There is. It is nice and bright now. It was chaotic before. Let's hear | :22:13. | :22:30.
from Joel, the director. You have quite a relationship with this | :22:31. | :22:35.
region. Lots of dramas here. What is the attraction? There has always | :22:36. | :22:46.
been a heritage year. Lots of people remember Byker Grove. For the past | :22:47. | :22:51.
four years we have made a lot of children's shows here. We come here | :22:52. | :23:02.
because it is a great place to make shows. We have great crews and | :23:03. | :23:08.
actors and locations. Tell us about this event. We have another few days | :23:09. | :23:15.
to go. So much going on? Pandemonium earlier. It is brilliant. The thing | :23:16. | :23:23.
about see BBC is it is the one you can get involved in. You can be on | :23:24. | :23:27.
our programmes and writing and with events like best you can come and be | :23:28. | :23:31.
on the television. We have had thousands of kids here and I'm | :23:32. | :23:35.
hoping that if the weather is nice tomorrow we will have even more | :23:36. | :23:41.
tomorrow. It is so important to provide quality children's TV. It is | :23:42. | :23:51.
the most important thing. It is also important. We are based on the other | :23:52. | :23:56.
side of England in Salford but right here to make programmes that involve | :23:57. | :23:59.
kids from all over the UK, so we think it is important to get out on | :24:00. | :24:03.
the road and me children where they live. Thank you for joining us. Two | :24:04. | :24:09.
days to go. It has been a good day today, but the weather may have kept | :24:10. | :24:13.
some people away. Let's find out if it will be better for the next | :24:14. | :24:19.
couple of days. The weather wasn't brilliant today. But I saw so many | :24:20. | :24:31.
smiling faces today. Let us take a look at the satellite pictures. The | :24:32. | :24:35.
cloud was reluctant to break today. A few glimpses there, but generally | :24:36. | :24:40.
things stay cloudy. It is still cloudy as we head into this evening. | :24:41. | :24:45.
Overnight back cloud still figuring out the odd spot of rain through the | :24:46. | :24:49.
early part of the night, but it will become more broken allowing a few Ms | :24:50. | :24:57.
patches the form. It will be cooler than most days, temperatures down to | :24:58. | :25:06.
seven Celsius `` mist patches. Tomorrow is bright and dry. Good | :25:07. | :25:14.
news for the kids coming here. Glimpses of blue sky and sunshine | :25:15. | :25:19.
from time to time. Very light winds tomorrow so it should feel warmer as | :25:20. | :25:24.
well. We will see high of 17 Celsius. Take a look at the | :25:25. | :25:30.
preciously grinned as we head into the weekend. You will see the high | :25:31. | :25:35.
pressure is in charge through Friday and Saturday, but by Sunday we have | :25:36. | :25:41.
a low weather system turning things more changeable as we head for the | :25:42. | :25:45.
second half of the weekend. The weekend outlook if you're out and | :25:46. | :25:50.
about see Saturday dry and bright. Temperatures making 18 Celsius so it | :25:51. | :25:54.
should feel warm when the sun does come out. Sunday sees the cloud | :25:55. | :25:58.
figuring out in the west, eventually some patchy rain into Cumbria but | :25:59. | :26:04.
not before temperatures in Gateshead will hit 18 degrees. All in all it | :26:05. | :26:10.
is not looking too bad over the next few days. A fairly quiet spell of | :26:11. | :26:14.
weather and good news for the crowds here. That is how it is looking here | :26:15. | :26:23.
in Gateshead this evening. Hundreds of smiling faces on their way home | :26:24. | :26:27.
this evening. Peter and I are a little bit disappointed there was no | :26:28. | :26:35.
sign of Valerie Singleton. We are showing our age. Back to you too | :26:36. | :26:44.
young things in the studio. Young things? Well, why not. We knew | :26:45. | :26:50.
Valerie Singleton. I am back for the late news update at 10:25pm. By then | :26:51. | :27:02.
I'll. `` bye for now. | :27:03. | :27:08. |
