50 people managed to escape ` after a fire swept through an historic

hotel in Cumbria last night. Around 60 firefighters from across Cumbria

fought the blaze ` which was still smouldering this morning. The fire

has extensively damaged the The Queen's Head Hotel at Troutbeck ` a

Grade 2 listed property. All 50 people staying and working `t the

17th Century Inn ` managed to escape to safety. The owners say they are

A woman is in hospital with serious injuries following a sexual assault

in Teesside. She suffered a broken arm and serious facial injuries in

the attack early this morning on Borough Road in North Ormesby, in

Middlesbrough. A member of the public came to the victim's aid and

chased the suspect, who it's believed escaped on foot. The police

Action against forced marri`ge ` has been stepped up today ahead of a

tough new law to end the pr`ctice comes. The Police and Crime

Commissioner, Vera Baird, vhsited the Newcastle community radho

doing all it can to stop codrced marriage and other forms of abuse.

Forced marriage is unlawful. It is a criminal offence and is backed by

seven years imprisonment and the police will take action. Thdre are

somebody is being co`etched into being married, against their will,

does not matter. It is an abuse of people and is a criminal offence.

It's said to be the largest multi`cultural event in the North

East's calendar ` and today the 24th Middlesbrough Mela kicked off with a

parade for the first time.The wet weather failed to dampen thd

carnival atmosphere for thotsands of visitors. Phil Chapman reports.

Apart from leading supplier of waterproofs, it was business as

usual for the hundreds of pdople taking part in what has become one

of the country's biggest multicultural celebrations. The main

music event takes place tomorrow, but the debut parade featurdd

dancers and artists from colmunity groups across Teesside. The

colourful parade, and the food, of course, soon make people forget

A World Record attempt is underway on Tyneside for the longest folk

music session. Musicians ard taking it in turns to play non`stop for 24

hours. The fund`raising event which ends at 10 tomorrow morning has been

as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

This is fantastic for us. It is the first time we have done this, 2

hours of nonstop folk music. It will enable us to expand what we can do
