Good evening. some big decisions to make.

Police have been carrying ott door`to`door enquiries todax, as

part of their investigation into a serious sexual assault in

Middlesbrough. The 52`year`old victim is still in James Cook

University Hospital receiving treatment for facial injurids and a

broken arm. She's in a stable condition after her ordeal.

This brutal attack happened in a very public place ` on a flxover

near the busy A66 and above the residential area of Lytton Street,

not far from the centre of Middlesbrough.

When they've come together `t this point here, at the flyover steps, he

has violently assaulted her by punching and kicking her. And he has

dragged her down onto the steps here. There,

he has committed a violent sexual assault.

At that point, a passerby chased the attacker away in the directhon of

North Ormesby. Now, the polhce want any other witnesses to come forward

to help catch the man they `re looking for.

He is described as 20 to 30, slim build, wearing a white top, mousy

coloured hair, pale blue je`ns. It's quite a busy area. Although it was

six o'clock in the morning, as you can see it as a busy area whth

passing cars. I'd like to appeal to any motorists who were in this area

yesterday around 6am, or just prior, who may have seen this happdn.

the police are trying to re`ssure people in the area.

We have a dedicated enquiry team looking into this. We are exhausting

all lines of enquiry to hopdfully arrest and charge this offender

We've also got increased patrols in the area.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of another

man on Tyne and Wear. Policd were called to Usworth Hall in the

Stephenson area of Washington this morning. A critically`injurdd man

was airlifted to hospital btt has since died.

A 36`year`old man remains in custody.

He was a witness to history. 70 years ago, Fred Jewett from

Northumberland played a key role in the D`Day invasion on the bdaches of

Normandy. And today for the first time, Fred has been telling his

extraordinary story. Andrew Hartley reports.

He was close enough to see, hear, and smell the battle. And ydt, what

he remembers above all, is the silence.

The countdown came, ten seconds to go, then five, four, three, two ..

And there was silence and then all of a sudden, all hell let loose

It was the biggest combined land, sea and air operation of all time.

Leading Seaman Fred Jewett, now 91, was on board the destroyer HMS

Vigilant, built by Swan Hunter on the time just a year earlier. Fred

watched through a rangefinddr as history was made before his eyes `

his role to guide the guns ` 20 British warships bombarding the

respect for my comrades in `rms in the Army.

That was when you felt terrhbly sorry and why I have such great

His feet never touched the shore that day but Fred, from

Heddon on the Wall, had plaxed a vital role in ensuring the success

of the Normandy invasion. I feel asense of pride in so far as

my countrymen were so brave, not me. My countrymen, and what I s`w was

enough to make anyone say... ..it's good to be British!

The operatic boy band Collabro, which includes two local lads ` have

won this year's final ` of the ITV show, Britain's Got Talent. Jamie

Lambert from South Tyneside and Matthew Pagan from Carlisle are

among the five members of the group. Collabro won ?250,000 and the

opportunity of appearing at The Royal Variety Performance.

Hello there, good evening. Well Saturday was awful. Today h`s been

much better, and tomorrow there will be a mixture of the two. Sunshine

and showers. One or two of those showers could be on the heavy side.

Any remaining showers will tend to die out this evening. Gener`lly

overnight, dry with some cldar spells and a little bit of list and

fog. Not a cold night, tempdratures down to 11 or 12 degrees. 10 is 52

Fahrenheit. So, tomorrow, there will be a scattering of showers, pushing

up from the West and the Sotth West. Variable cloud with some brhght or

sunny spells and feeling pldasant in that sunshine. Temperatures will not

be too bad ` 18 degrees up the East Coast, 19 degrees for the Wdst,

which is 66 degrees Fahrenhdit. Watch out, one or two of those

showers could be very heavy in nature. The same can be said for

Tuesday. A low pressure still dominates as we work our wax into

Wednesday and Thursday. High pressure will push in, so things

should settle down. On Mond`y, a mixture of sunshine and showers The

same can be said for Tuesdax, with some of those showers on thd heavy

side. On Wednesday and Thursday variable amounts of cloud.

Feeling warm in the sunshind, 19 or 20 degrees.
