Hello and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. | :00:11. | :00:12.
Two Russian students arrestdd after a city centre drama | :00:13. | :00:15.
which saw bomb disposal expdrts carry out a controlled explosion. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Unemployment in the North E`st goes up again ` but manufacturers say | :00:19. | :00:21.
they're at their most optimhstic for more than 40 years. | :00:22. | :00:23.
Firefighters get ready to hold their first 24 hour strike over pdnsions. | :00:24. | :00:26.
And the three England fans who've walked | :00:27. | :00:27.
more than a thousand miles `cross South America for charity fhnally | :00:28. | :00:30.
On the same subject ` we'll give you a guide on | :00:31. | :00:35.
the players from OUR region to watch out for over the next few wdeks | :00:36. | :00:38.
And we'll meet the real`lifd Rocky ` a political refugee, carving out a | :00:39. | :00:42.
It was a night of high drala in Newcastle ` | :00:43. | :01:02.
and now police are holding two Russian teenagers, after closing | :01:03. | :01:05.
off city centre roads and evacuating a building at Newcastle University. | :01:06. | :01:08.
Bomb disposal officers later carried out a controlled explosion | :01:09. | :01:12.
in the early hours, heard across a wide area of the chty. | :01:13. | :01:15.
Today, Northumbria Police revealed the two | :01:16. | :01:17.
Russians, both students at the University, are being questhoned. | :01:18. | :01:20.
Gerry Jackson joins us from outside the building | :01:21. | :01:22.
Take us through what happendd, Gerry. | :01:23. | :01:34.
Circumstances are still not clear. But bomb disposal officers were | :01:35. | :01:44.
called here. We understand this is a mixture of teaching rooms and | :01:45. | :01:48.
student accommodation. They came across what they called potdntially | :01:49. | :01:53.
suspicious items. Roads werd cordoned off. The bus station was | :01:54. | :02:00.
closed. The university building was closed. Last night an 18`ye`r`old | :02:01. | :02:11.
man was arrested in London. Two day we learned that two men are being | :02:12. | :02:16.
held. They are both Russian students, both 18, and both studying | :02:17. | :02:25.
here at the University. We do know that something w`s blown | :02:26. | :02:30.
up by Army bomb disposal officers? We do. Just after midnight ` | :02:31. | :02:37.
controlled explosion took place one mile away from here. Twitter was | :02:38. | :02:49.
rife with speculation. But the police have never referred to a | :02:50. | :02:56.
bomber. They say the exploshon was a precaution and there is no further | :02:57. | :03:05.
cause for concern for the ptblic. The police and the teachers told us | :03:06. | :03:11.
to come outside. What was the atmosphere like? We were very | :03:12. | :03:22.
alarmed. We were very frightened. We have been keen to talk to the | :03:23. | :03:25.
police and the University authorities, but this enquiry is so | :03:26. | :03:32.
sensitive that the university was advised not to talk on camera. We | :03:33. | :03:42.
talked to a bar manager who found himself behind the police cordoned. | :03:43. | :03:49.
I was a bit nervous. I am a student as well. There is concern for | :03:50. | :04:01.
everyone when that happens. They cordoned off a large area bdcause it | :04:02. | :04:11.
was attracting people at th`t point. Two students in custody tonhght At | :04:12. | :04:16.
least one item found here that was blown up. Many more questions to be | :04:17. | :04:20.
answered. The police say thhs could all take some time. | :04:21. | :04:28.
Unemployment in the North East has gone up `gain. | :04:29. | :04:30.
Figures released today show there were 131,000 jobless people | :04:31. | :04:40.
in the period from February to April ` that's a rise of 6,000, | :04:41. | :04:43.
In Cumbria the number of people claiming Jobseekers' | :04:44. | :04:47.
But in spite of that rise in North East unemployment, thdre is | :04:48. | :04:51.
Manufacturers have said thex are at their most optimistic | :04:52. | :04:56.
Our Business Correspondent Han Reeve reports. | :04:57. | :05:06.
And Mud told us everything was dynamite. | :05:07. | :05:24.
The Conservative government cut taxes, increased spending. | :05:25. | :05:28.
But now, according to the elployers? organisation the CBI, manuf`cturers | :05:29. | :05:37.
are at their most optimistic about creating jobs since that 973 | :05:38. | :05:42.
boom, and reversing today's rise in North East unemployment. | :05:43. | :05:48.
This car parts company near Redcar illustrates the point. | :05:49. | :05:52.
It supplies all the big car makers and employs 85 | :05:53. | :05:56.
We have just opened a new extension to the factory. We are incrdasing | :05:57. | :06:12.
our capacity by 50%. That is a reflection of where we are going. It | :06:13. | :06:16.
is giving us the opportunitx to grow even further. | :06:17. | :06:19.
Stuart has already benefited from the rise in company optimism, | :06:20. | :06:21.
plucked from nine months of unemployment to | :06:22. | :06:23.
I felt like I had won the lottery. It looks well for everybody. | :06:24. | :06:40.
So this is the kind of employer a manufacturer, | :06:41. | :06:42.
Buoyed along on that wave of optimism not seen since 0973 | :06:43. | :06:46.
Strikes, a winter of discontent and some hard times lay ahe`d. | :06:47. | :07:03.
Well Ian is in our Tees newsroom now. | :07:04. | :07:06.
So there was bad news on North East unemployment, but more bad news | :07:07. | :07:09.
Yes there was. Wages grew bx only 0.7%. Wages are not keeping place | :07:10. | :07:26.
with the price of everything that we buy. `` keeping pace. But more | :07:27. | :07:36.
people are getting into work. It seems odd that you can have a rise | :07:37. | :07:41.
in employment and also a rise in unemployment. But 15,000 more people | :07:42. | :07:52.
have got a job in this area in the last three months compared to the | :07:53. | :07:56.
A man has been charged with manslaughter following the deaths of | :07:57. | :08:02.
a mother and daughter from carbon monoxide poisoning on board a cabin | :08:03. | :08:05.
Kelly Webster, who was 36, `nd her 10`year`old daughter Lauren Thornton | :08:06. | :08:08.
were killed by the fumes from an ill`fitted petrol generator. | :08:09. | :08:11.
Her partner, Matthew Eteson, who was also on board the boat, | :08:12. | :08:14.
has been charged with mansl`ughter by gross negligence. | :08:15. | :08:20.
The public are being warned of a reduced level | :08:21. | :08:23.
of emergency fire cover tomorrow, as the Fire Brigades Union holds its | :08:24. | :08:26.
The stoppage coincides with the start of the World Cup, which it's | :08:27. | :08:32.
feared could put extra demand on replacement crews being brotght in. | :08:33. | :08:35.
The Fire Brigades Union dispute over pensions reform is now | :08:36. | :08:40.
In response to criticism ovdr the timing of the strike, the union | :08:41. | :08:51.
If it is in the winter we are accused of bad timing. Likewise if | :08:52. | :09:14.
it is in the summer. If the public have an emergency incident, dial | :09:15. | :09:28.
999. It will be prioritised on life risk. | :09:29. | :09:33.
The union claims public support for the stoppage. | :09:34. | :09:35.
None of the people we asked were even aware the strike was h`ppening, | :09:36. | :09:38.
but the sympathies of almost all lay in the same place. | :09:39. | :09:41.
With the firemen. Why should they have to retire without a pension or | :09:42. | :10:00.
work until 60? Unless the Government and the union can come up whth an | :10:01. | :10:05.
agreement they will be a further strike on Saturday the 21st of June. | :10:06. | :10:15.
There's been a big rise in the number of serious incidents | :10:16. | :10:17.
reported at hospitals in Carlisle and Whitehaven. | :10:18. | :10:19.
One patient even had the wrong part of their body operated on. | :10:20. | :10:24.
Figures released by the North Cumbria University Hospitals | :10:25. | :10:26.
Trust show that there were 000 serious incidents in the last year. | :10:27. | :10:29.
Mark McAlindon is in our Culbria newsroom now. | :10:30. | :10:35.
The kind of things we are t`lking about could include staff or patient | :10:36. | :10:50.
abuse, or the expected death of the patient. Officials at the trust say | :10:51. | :11:01.
this. In the past few inciddnts where reported. Here is the medical | :11:02. | :11:15.
director of the trust. It is absolutely a good thing that there | :11:16. | :11:21.
is a lot of evidence that staff only report a proportion of incidents. | :11:22. | :11:26.
The more that they report the more opportunity we have to look for | :11:27. | :11:30.
patterns, underlying root c`uses of what is going on. | :11:31. | :11:36.
And, Mark, what of these so`called never incidents? | :11:37. | :11:40.
There were four of these evdnts But the spokesperson says every hospital | :11:41. | :11:52.
in the country has this typd of incidents. | :11:53. | :11:58.
But what have staff representatives had to say? | :11:59. | :12:00.
Are they persuaded by the Trust s argument that openness is good | :12:01. | :12:03.
Broadly they agree that there is greater openness. They do still have | :12:04. | :12:20.
some concerns. The Care Quality Commission has raised concerns about | :12:21. | :12:25.
Accident and Emergency servhces Concerns have been raised about | :12:26. | :12:31.
You're watching Wednesday's Look North. | :12:32. | :12:40.
Still to come ` Jeff with tonight's sports news | :12:41. | :12:42.
Three England football fans arrive in Brazil for the World Cup | :12:43. | :12:47.
after a 1,200 mile trek across South America. | :12:48. | :12:59.
And high`pressure dominates the weather over the next few d`ys. All | :13:00. | :13:07.
Now, have you ever done work experience, or perhaps | :13:08. | :13:12.
Possibly nothing as exotic as working with extinct species | :13:13. | :13:18.
encouraging flamingos to look in the mirror, or getting pdople to | :13:19. | :13:21.
These projects are what a small team of lucky interns will | :13:22. | :13:26.
get to do, if they make the grade at Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire. | :13:27. | :13:30.
But might not look like the kind of place for postgraduate studx. But | :13:31. | :13:47.
life is more than just a roller`coaster year. It is the | :13:48. | :13:54.
season for serious conservation work. A small group is about to | :13:55. | :14:01.
start work. This person has been looking into | :14:02. | :14:07.
Penguin behaviour. They are a social animal. We have one of the largest | :14:08. | :14:14.
colonies in the country. Thdy socialise here. We are lookhng at | :14:15. | :14:26.
the way that the public use the space. How can we improve that? This | :14:27. | :14:39.
person is reflecting on how the flamingos behave. The research that | :14:40. | :14:57.
we do will impact upon the new exhibit. | :14:58. | :15:04.
This team is working with the Government on developing a | :15:05. | :15:13.
biodiversity policy. This is about a broader conservation communhty. This | :15:14. | :15:25.
And next year 's intake could be reintroducing animals that were | :15:26. | :15:45.
extinct in the wild. Some animals have been released into semh`captive | :15:46. | :16:01.
environments. The next challenge could begin on the doorstep in North | :16:02. | :16:07.
They've walked for 100 days, passed through Argentina and Uruguay | :16:08. | :16:14.
and have now arrived in Brazil for the World Cup. | :16:15. | :16:16.
The three England fans from the North East and Cumbria who | :16:17. | :16:19.
we've been following have w`lked 1,966 kilometres and raised more | :16:20. | :16:27.
than ?10,000 to buy a well for a drought`hit area of Brazil. | :16:28. | :16:30.
And there was a remarkable end to the story after | :16:31. | :16:33.
the stray dog that had followed the lads for 500 miles was reunited | :16:34. | :16:36.
They've walked through three countries. | :16:37. | :16:43.
And finally received an apology for Diego Maradona's hand of God ` | :16:44. | :16:56.
which knocked England out of the World Cup. | :16:57. | :17:02.
A lifetime of memories ` combined with the odd nightlare | :17:03. | :17:09.
We were charged by boules. We had to walk along at train track. | :17:10. | :17:19.
Then there was the stray Urguayan dog who followed them, | :17:20. | :17:22.
became part of the team, and who they made a film about. | :17:23. | :17:32.
And amazingly the owner of the dog saw news coverage in Uruguax and | :17:33. | :17:38.
travelled to Brazil to be rdunited with the dog. There were lots of | :17:39. | :17:56.
But after 100 days and 1,966 killometres they `rrived | :17:57. | :18:02.
From a drunken idea, we havd done it. It feels amazing. | :18:03. | :18:19.
The highlight, they said, was the people they'd met | :18:20. | :18:21.
along the way, who'd shared their food, wine and homes with | :18:22. | :18:26.
So, the World Cup starts tolorrow, I'm told! | :18:27. | :18:34.
You have got to look at Brazil. Belgium. | :18:35. | :18:52.
South Korea are 250`1. Engl`nd are 25`1. | :18:53. | :18:59.
As well as following England ` you can also keep an eye out | :19:00. | :19:02.
for the players from our region who'll be in action | :19:03. | :19:05.
Here's a quick rundown on the ten to watch out for. | :19:06. | :19:09.
Newcastle provide the largest contingent. | :19:10. | :19:10.
Half a dozen Magpies receivdd a World Cup call`up. | :19:11. | :19:14.
Goalkeeper Tim Krul is in the Dutch squad. | :19:15. | :19:16.
Cheick Tiote's there for Ivory Coast. | :19:17. | :19:21.
France have two stars in Mathieu Debuchy and Moussa Sissoko ` | :19:22. | :19:26.
and reserve defender Curtis Good is there for the Aussies. | :19:27. | :19:29.
He hasn't scored many goals for Sunderland, | :19:30. | :19:35.
but Jozy Altidore is a regular up front for the United States. | :19:36. | :19:38.
And just a few years after playing for Barnet in | :19:39. | :19:40.
League Two, Middlesbrough's Ghanian winger Albert Adomah has thd chance | :19:41. | :19:43.
The local lads to watch out for ` well, | :19:44. | :19:49.
having been released by Newcastle, Shola Ameobi can put himself | :19:50. | :19:53.
And if you're an England fan, you'll be cheering | :19:54. | :19:58.
on Sunderland`born Jordan Hdnderson ` now with Liverpool, of cotrse ` | :19:59. | :20:00.
and Celtic's former Newcastle goalkeeper Fraser Forster, | :20:01. | :20:03.
It's almost time for the salba to stop and the football to st`rt. | :20:04. | :20:12.
Now, alongside the World Ctp, the Olympic Games ranks as the biggest | :20:13. | :20:15.
And when they came to London, two years ago, | :20:16. | :20:18.
it marked a turning point in the life of a young African boxer. | :20:19. | :20:21.
He walked out of the Cameroon camp, along with six of his team`lates, | :20:22. | :20:24.
One man who has made Wearside is home. In 2012 he started a new life. | :20:25. | :21:00.
He ended up in Sunderland. He trained in the gym. He was | :21:01. | :21:15.
fantastic. He has been an inspiration. I have a probldm with | :21:16. | :21:33.
my Government. I cannot livd again in Cameroon. | :21:34. | :21:44.
He will make his profession`l debut on July 13. He is aiming for the | :21:45. | :22:06.
top. I want to win my fight. He says to me that he wants to be world | :22:07. | :22:21.
champion. Hopefully he will do well. He is a smashing lad. Hopeftlly he | :22:22. | :22:33.
The Great North Swim weekend is fast approaching. | :22:34. | :22:51.
Many remarkable people will take the plunge in a chilly Winddrmere ` | :22:52. | :22:55.
including a teenager Daniel Murray from Northumberland. | :22:56. | :22:57.
He's been beaten many odds to be there. | :22:58. | :22:59.
He's swimming the mile for the Children's Heart Unht | :23:00. | :23:01.
in Newcastle's Freeman Hosphtal ` and alongside him in the water will | :23:02. | :23:04.
I caught up with them on a training swim at the QEII lake in Ashington. | :23:05. | :23:12.
A scar on his chest is the only clue that Daniel Murray has been a heart | :23:13. | :23:22.
patient. Born with a whole `nd his heart he has been resuscitated | :23:23. | :23:28.
several times. Swimming has become his passion. My heart had to work | :23:29. | :23:42.
harder than everyone else's. Hopefully I will give some people a | :23:43. | :23:48.
run for their money. His last major surgery was in December. Here she | :23:49. | :23:52.
is, at the age of 16, in thd middle of his GCSEs, taking part in the | :23:53. | :24:03.
great North swim. And he is taking part with his heart surgeon. He | :24:04. | :24:17.
mentioned that he swims. My eyes lit up. He had two major operathons I | :24:18. | :24:34.
did not know where they would be able to swim. It is great to see him | :24:35. | :24:48.
now sitting here. He will almost certainly beat me by a mile. With a | :24:49. | :24:54.
trained instructor to hand they were off. | :24:55. | :25:08.
And now they are focused on this weekend's swim. | :25:09. | :25:32.
A bit of sunshine tonight. Tomorrow most places will be fine, dry and | :25:33. | :25:41.
warm. Today the exceptions were parts of the Cambrian Coast. | :25:42. | :25:51.
Temperatures in the big towns and cities staying in double figures. | :25:52. | :26:03.
Tomorrow it will be mostly drive. More cloud along the coast of | :26:04. | :26:11.
Cumbria during the morning. The winds will be light from thd | :26:12. | :26:27.
Southwest. High`pressure tolorrow. By Friday things begin to change. | :26:28. | :26:40.
Cloud and rain comes in. Ovdr the next few days there will be some | :26:41. | :26:46.
clouds. There will be some rain on Friday. Things will brighten up | :26:47. | :26:58.
through the weekend. The best of the greatest tomorrow will be of the | :26:59. | :27:07.
Pennines. Things eventually brightening up through the weekend. | :27:08. | :27:27.
And the antiques road show will be at Penrith tomorrow. So do go along | :27:28. | :27:40.
if you can. That is all for now. Goodbyd. | :27:41. | :27:45. |
