cooler through the weekend, but the weather is looking pretty | :00:00. | :00:17.
Plans for a spectacular opening ceremony as the Great North Run | :00:18. | :00:31.
prepares for its millionth runner this year. And we catch up with | :00:32. | :00:34.
the Antiques Roadshow team as hundreds of hopefuls dust down | :00:35. | :00:37.
In sport, Hartlepool's Graele Storm flies the flag for the north east | :00:38. | :00:42.
And Yorkshire's Joe Root top scores for England to help rescue | :00:43. | :00:47.
the first day of the first test against Sri Lanka. | :00:48. | :01:02.
There's been a dramatic escalation in thd | :01:03. | :01:04.
investigation into the explosives alert at Newcastle University. | :01:05. | :01:07.
The North East Counter Terrorism Unit has now taken over | :01:08. | :01:14.
the operation, after a second alert on the campus. | :01:15. | :01:16.
Early this morning, police evacuated a housing block | :01:17. | :01:19.
after finding another suspicious substance, 48 hours on from a | :01:20. | :01:22.
The bomb squad spent much of the day at the University, and withhn the | :01:23. | :01:27.
last hour Northumbria policd have been giving us more information | :01:28. | :01:30.
Peter Harris is live at their Ponteland HQ now. | :01:31. | :01:33.
If there was any doubt about the potential seriousness of thhs | :01:34. | :01:45.
investigation, it has been removed in the last half`hour, without | :01:46. | :01:50.
confirmation that police have handed this over to the north`east | :01:51. | :01:54.
counterterrorism unit. How did this begin? We have discovered this | :01:55. | :01:58.
evening that it started with suspicions about an individtal | :01:59. | :02:04.
student, about concerns of changes in his behaviour. It turns out a | :02:05. | :02:09.
neighbourhood police officer went to his room, but a look around, find | :02:10. | :02:13.
items they were not happy whth and from there, this whole thing took | :02:14. | :02:19.
off. There was an evacuation, the discovery of suspicious substances | :02:20. | :02:23.
and later on, that student was tracked down and arrested in central | :02:24. | :02:27.
London. The police have been telling us what happened when they went that | :02:28. | :02:34.
student's room. A number of items were seen in the bedroom whhch gave | :02:35. | :02:41.
cause for concern and we lalented a well`established response plan, | :02:42. | :02:45.
which included evacuation of the building and pigmentation of | :02:46. | :02:51.
cordons. In line with nationally agreed protocols, counterterrorism | :02:52. | :02:54.
officers attended the scene and as a result of their initial assdssment, | :02:55. | :03:00.
a military explosive unit attended the scene. Following a detahled | :03:01. | :03:04.
assessment, the items were identified as being exposes. They | :03:05. | :03:09.
were removed by the militarx in a controlled explosion, carridd out at | :03:10. | :03:18.
exposition Park. With all of this upheaval today, what our sttdents | :03:19. | :03:20.
and staff saying? There is an alarm, if anythhng, it's | :03:21. | :03:26.
curiosity. Many students have gone home. We have been speaking to both | :03:27. | :03:33.
students and to staff. It is fortunate that the exam perhod has | :03:34. | :03:39.
just finished and there are few students left in most of thd | :03:40. | :03:42.
University. Yes, just a bit of disruption for us. | :03:43. | :03:53.
We still have two Russian students under arrest. They have not been | :03:54. | :03:58.
charged. One is being held `t a police station in central London. | :03:59. | :04:04.
Another is being held at a police station in the Northumbria police | :04:05. | :04:09.
dash area. The student being held in London is being held under the | :04:10. | :04:12.
counterterrorism act. The other student is being held on suspicion | :04:13. | :04:17.
of conspiracy to commit gridvous bodily harm. Also, under | :04:18. | :04:22.
investigation for explosive devices. This is a fast`moving | :04:23. | :04:28.
investigation. It is now with the north`east counterterrorism unit. We | :04:29. | :04:31.
will follow it through the dvening and will have more at 10:25pm. What | :04:32. | :04:45.
do we know about where this investigation started? | :04:46. | :04:50.
It is a shiny new bit of Newcastle University. It opened in September | :04:51. | :04:55.
2012. It is basically descrhbed as the campus language centre. The | :04:56. | :05:01.
university is keen to show ht off. It plays a key role for | :05:02. | :05:11.
international students. Applications are made to it by a direct | :05:12. | :05:17.
admissions centre. We also know that 533 students actually live hn that | :05:18. | :05:23.
part of the university as wdll. How many international studdnts are | :05:24. | :05:28.
there as Newcastle University? There are about 4000 intern`tional | :05:29. | :05:30.
students at university. Thex come from 110 different nationalhties, | :05:31. | :05:35.
across the world. Russian students in particular are very welcome. They | :05:36. | :05:42.
have a good reputation. There is even a special Russian scholarship | :05:43. | :05:46.
for those particular students. These students are important | :05:47. | :05:49.
financially as well, aren't there? They are, because of the gap between | :05:50. | :05:55.
EU students and the amount international students pay. A | :05:56. | :05:59.
chemistry student, a three`xear course, a UK student would pay | :06:00. | :06:04.
?27,000 over three years. An international student would pay | :06:05. | :06:10.
?46,470. The gap gets even bigger longer the longer the coursd. | :06:11. | :06:15.
Looking at Madison, a five`xear course costs ?36,000 for a TK | :06:16. | :06:22.
student. The International student will pay ?116,990 for the fhve`year | :06:23. | :06:25.
course. We heard about suspicions bding | :06:26. | :06:29.
raised. Does the University security that the students? | :06:30. | :06:34.
It doesn't. What it says is that basically, it follows the home | :06:35. | :06:39.
office these procedures. Thdy are vetted effectively at that stage. | :06:40. | :06:45.
University is keen to that ht is business as usual, academic`lly | :06:46. | :06:46.
Academic life goes on. Thousands of jobs and hundrdds | :06:47. | :07:02.
of millions of pounds pumped It's claimed that could be the | :07:03. | :07:07.
outcome of an ?80 million The scheme has been proposed | :07:08. | :07:23.
by Darlington council and Tdesside and Darlington's Local Enterprise | :07:24. | :07:27.
Partnership, the body that brings togethdr | :07:28. | :07:28.
businesses and local authorhties. Our Business Correspondent Han Reeve | :07:29. | :07:30.
reports. It is estimated that passengers | :07:31. | :07:39.
alighting at this station spend ?5 million in the local economx. But | :07:40. | :07:46.
this man, the boss of Teeside enterprise agency, along with | :07:47. | :07:49.
Darlington Council, thinks xet more potential exists. Spend mondy | :07:50. | :07:54.
upgrading the station and the benefits would be enormous. There | :07:55. | :07:57.
will be a significant incre`se to the local economy. That would be in | :07:58. | :08:01.
terms of hundreds of millions of pounds over the period. If xou think | :08:02. | :08:05.
about 25,000 new jobs, the hncomes they would have, so you can see it | :08:06. | :08:09.
is a significant boost which would come. Unsurprisingly, busindsses | :08:10. | :08:16.
like the idea. This engineering company is in favour. But whth a | :08:17. | :08:21.
caveat. There is no point stepping of the station to be met with a wall | :08:22. | :08:25.
of traffic or inadequate infrastructure to get away xou need | :08:26. | :08:29.
to be. We are two or three liles from the train station but ht can | :08:30. | :08:33.
take 20 minutes on a bad dax. There is a hedge. The station is owned by | :08:34. | :08:39.
network rail. It is spending cash if spending has been allocated until | :08:40. | :08:45.
2019 and Darlington is not hn its plans. The regeneration could be a | :08:46. | :08:46.
long time coming. A man arrested on suspicion | :08:47. | :08:51.
of murdering the York chef Claudia Lawrence has been rd`bailed | :08:52. | :08:53.
by police. Claudia has been missing | :08:54. | :08:55.
for more than five years. A 59`year`old man was arrested | :08:56. | :08:58.
last month then released on bail. North Yorkshire Police say | :08:59. | :09:01.
further enquiries are being made. The Fire Brigades' Union is out | :09:02. | :09:05.
on strike across the region today, after starting a 24`hour walkout | :09:06. | :09:08.
at 9am. Contingency plans are in pl`ce | :09:09. | :09:12.
to provide emergency cover. The strike is part | :09:13. | :09:15.
of a national dispute over proposed Carlisle's Conservative MP John | :09:16. | :09:18.
Stevenson is writing to North West Ambulance Service to object to cuts | :09:19. | :09:23.
to the service in Cumbria. It is reducing Carlisle's nhght`time | :09:24. | :09:34.
cover and removing Penrith's Meanwhile the | :09:35. | :09:41.
North East Ambulance Servicd has Yvonne Ormston has worked | :09:42. | :09:44.
for the NHS locally for mord than 30 years, most recently as | :09:45. | :09:48.

first event of its kind in the world To mark the countdown to thhs year's | :09:54. | :10:01.
event, a spectacular opening ceremony is being held on | :10:02. | :10:07.
the Newcastle Gateshead quaxside. And the organisers are lookhng | :10:08. | :10:13.
for 1,500 volunteers to It's the world biggest half | :10:14. | :10:15.
marathon and it's about to This year, the Great North Run will | :10:16. | :10:21.
reach its one millionth runner. And to celebrate this milestone | :10:22. | :10:28.
an opening ceremony like no other. They will be a stage in the middle, | :10:29. | :10:41.
there will be music, there will be lighting on the Sage. They will be | :10:42. | :10:44.
camaraderie and a fantastic atmosphere. Just like the great | :10:45. | :10:49.
North run, it is not made bx the organisers but by the peopld who | :10:50. | :10:53.
take part. This event will be manufactured by us but it whll be | :10:54. | :10:55.
celebrated by the people of the region who come and supporthve, just | :10:56. | :10:56.
like they do with the event. The epic one | :10:57. | :11:02.
off event will be inspired by the sporting and industrial heritage | :11:03. | :11:05.
of the region and masterminded by the man behind London 2002 | :11:06. | :11:08.
Paralympic Opening ceremony. What I wanted to do with thhs | :11:09. | :11:14.
ceremony was celebrate the spirit of running for everyone. 1 million is | :11:15. | :11:20.
much more than just a statistic It is a movement, a sporting movement | :11:21. | :11:24.
that comes out of the north`east's amazing traditions of | :11:25. | :11:29.
participation, endeavour, industry and ingenuity. | :11:30. | :11:31.
Organiser have enlisted the very best people to create a spectacle | :11:32. | :11:34.
But they don't have long to do it in. | :11:35. | :11:40.
It is less than three months to go before the opening ceremony and the | :11:41. | :11:46.
creative team have a mind boggling amounts to do before then, not least | :11:47. | :11:50.
to find 1500 volunteer performers. They are looking for people over the | :11:51. | :11:55.
age of 16, of all abilities, to take part in the biggest event the | :11:56. | :11:56.
quayside has ever seen. Sharuna, the organisers say | :11:57. | :12:00.
they need 1,500 volunteers. Where are they going | :12:01. | :12:05.
to find them all? They've been | :12:06. | :12:07.
in touch with dance groups, But they want everyone to gdt | :12:08. | :12:14.
involved, even you Jeff you have be over 16 but other that you don't | :12:15. | :12:20.
actually need to have any abilities. Just like with | :12:21. | :12:25.
the London 2012 opening and closing ceremonies and there were streams of | :12:26. | :12:27.
people involved in the performance. To find out how you can voltnteer | :12:28. | :12:30.
just go the website, gnrmillion org, You might know this already, | :12:31. | :12:37.

a pub to avoid for the next month Landlord Norman Scott has covered | :12:52. | :12:54.
the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow with giant flags representing all 32 | :12:55. | :12:58.
competing nations. He's probably hoping for lots | :12:59. | :13:01.
of extra time, too. Yes, in little more than a couple | :13:02. | :13:06.
of hours from now the And a group of 50 supporters | :13:07. | :13:09.
from the region will soon bd But these are England fans with | :13:10. | :13:13.
a heart. They're not just going | :13:14. | :13:16.
for the football, they'll spend the next few weeks as volunteers | :13:17. | :13:19.
on a building project in a deprived This is where 300 volunteers | :13:20. | :13:22.

Four years ago BBC Look North followed volunteers to South Africa | :13:56. | :14:09.

They've raised more than 3/4 million to build these changing rools | :14:13. | :14:19.
for Cleveland Juniors Footb`ll Club in Middlesbrough. | :14:20. | :14:21.
It is important to reach out at home as well as abroad. There have been | :14:22. | :14:35.
more protests in Brazil tod`y. The charity says it is sympathetic to | :14:36. | :14:39.
the opposition. We don't like the way that world cups are run. We | :14:40. | :14:46.
don't know... We stand with the poor. We help the poor. We don't | :14:47. | :14:50.
take from a country, we givd to a country. We are doing more hn South | :14:51. | :14:53.
Africa now, four year on, than during the World Cup. If it cannot | :14:54. | :14:58.
say that. We stand with people possibly stand with their | :14:59. | :15:01.
frustrations that there are no jobs, while there are gleamhng | :15:02. | :15:07.
stadiums that no one will ever use. We go along to make a difference. | :15:08. | :15:38.
Capturing Cumbria's history on camera. Items from across the ages | :15:39. | :15:47.
took centre stage at this c`stle, as the antiques road show film part of | :15:48. | :15:53.
its 37th series. I go to thd reception where everyone has two | :15:54. | :15:56.

stories, looking for things forth to film. That is what I spend ly day | :16:01. | :16:01.
doing. Tins from Carrs Biscuit factory | :16:02. | :16:09.

in September. If you've ever found | :17:05. | :17:10.

a way to make the train journey from Kings Cross to Darlington | :17:26. | :17:30.
a lot better for passengers. He's managed to get his own | :17:31. | :17:36.

a great idea. I thought it was great. A different journey. I wasn't | :18:40. | :18:41.
expecting it. After three hours of stand tp | :18:42. | :18:45.
comedy, it's time to stop. It's hoped this idea could become | :18:46. | :18:48.
a regular thing. We've made it to Darlington I hope | :18:49. | :18:56.

right here. This Sunderland plant turns out to new cars every minute. | :21:57. | :22:00.
Last year alone, over 500,000 cars rolled off the production lhne. And | :22:01. | :22:05.
these are some of the peopld who keep the plant operating smoothly. I | :22:06. | :22:11.
am a maintenance team leader. I ve worked here for 27 years. I was one | :22:12. | :22:16.
of the original trainees. They keep the engine ticking over. I have a | :22:17. | :22:22.
maintenance instalment. I'vd been with the company for 25 years. My | :22:23. | :22:29.
name is insane. I mean the maintenance technician. I work in a | :22:30. | :22:33.
plastic workshop. I been here for 19 years. They keep the press hs | :22:34. | :22:42.
pressing. My name is James. I'm a fifth year trainee. I work within | :22:43. | :22:45.
the press shop and I am qualified in September. Will they be abld to | :22:46. | :22:54.
handle the pressure of choosing our winning weather picture? Yotr | :22:55. | :23:00.
selection brought us some interesting clouds, some interesting | :23:01. | :23:02.
wildlife and of course, somd great bluebells. But what was it that | :23:03. | :23:10.
caught the eye of our judges? The first runner up is Dan Myers. It's a | :23:11. | :23:14.
very atmospheric picture with the sun peeping through. | :23:15. | :23:23.
The second runner up... It hs a set of beautifully by the seasonal | :23:24. | :23:40.
bluebells in the foreground. This was by David Stevenson. | :23:41. | :23:47.
There can only be one winner and it is back to the Co Durham co`stline | :23:48. | :23:54.
for that. The winner was Jalie McElderry from Washington. His photo | :23:55. | :23:57.
was a First World War metal sculpture. We thought the phcture | :23:58. | :24:03.
instantly stands out. It is a good step fashion sense of depth. It is a | :24:04. | :24:09.
difficult decision to pick ` winner but congratulations to Jamid. I am | :24:10. | :24:15.
sure the picture will look great in next year's calendar. | :24:16. | :24:22.
Keep your June weather picttres coming in. Check out the website. | :24:23. | :24:28.
Your something a little unusual This time of year, parent bhrds are | :24:29. | :24:33.
in a frenzy, feeding their xoung, but this blackbird spotted `n | :24:34. | :24:37.
opportunity it was not going to miss. Nothing ventured, nothing | :24:38. | :24:46.
gained. It was quite a surprise when the bird made off with the whole | :24:47. | :24:57.
thing. It will be a different sort of day tomorrow. It will be pretty | :24:58. | :25:05.
warm if you're out and about. Tonight, that I've starts to thicken | :25:06. | :25:10.
from the north. It will bring patchy rain through the night. Further | :25:11. | :25:15.
south, it will stay dry but I will keep temperatures in double | :25:16. | :25:18.
figures. The winds will stax fairly light as well. Tomorrow, generally | :25:19. | :25:25.
speaking, cloudier. It will be thick enough for some patchy rain first | :25:26. | :25:29.
thing. Then maybe one or two brighter spells breaking out before | :25:30. | :25:31.
the rain returns, more especially to northern areas. It will not rain | :25:32. | :25:39.
everywhere but bright spells will be short lived after... With more | :25:40. | :25:48.
cloud, we could still see temperatures in North Yorkshire | :25:49. | :25:52.
reaching 21 Celsius through the afternoon. It is this littld weather | :25:53. | :25:57.
system that brings us cloudher skies tomorrow and that patchy rahn. That | :25:58. | :26:01.
front slowly edges away south and that patchy rain. That front slowly | :26:02. | :26:05.
edges away second a while to clear up on Saturday. Then, high`pressure | :26:06. | :26:12.
starts to dominate again. Notice the winds are coming from a northerly | :26:13. | :26:16.
direction by the end of the weekend so things will turn a bit cooler. If | :26:17. | :26:21.
you are out and about over the next few days, tomorrow, cloudy skies | :26:22. | :26:23.
with outbreaks of rain. On Saturday, becoming drier from the North. It | :26:24. | :26:34.
will be a slow brightening tp as we had through Saturday. Sundax looks | :26:35. | :26:38.
mostly dry and reasonably bright as well. Where the sun does cole out, | :26:39. | :26:42.
we could hit 20 Celsius but where we keep a bit of cloud in the dast | :26:43. | :26:45.
temperatures more like the mid`teens. It's a similar phcture | :26:46. | :26:55.
for Monday as well. That is the way weather is looking. We will keep you | :26:56. | :26:59.
up`to`date on your BBC local radio station or you can check out the BBC | :27:00. | :27:03.
weather app and get a forec`st wherever you are on the movd. | :27:04. | :27:09.
Tomorrow, we will be reporthng on the progress of the Commonwdalth | :27:10. | :27:14.
Games bat on. The Baton, seen here with Gold medal | :27:15. | :27:18.
winning boxer Nicola Adams, will be spending its last day in England | :27:19. | :27:21.
before heading North of the Border. All the highlights of the d`y on | :27:22. | :27:24.
Look North, and on BBC Newc`stle, and Tyne and Wear online will have | :27:25. | :27:27.
coverage from 7am onwards. | :27:28. | :27:38. |
