and on our website, but that is all for now. It is | :00:00. | :00:10.
two people arrested as the nationwide search for this reason | :00:11. | :00:14.
brothers missing from their foster home continues. | :00:15. | :00:19.
Thousands of our A`level students get the results which could decide | :00:20. | :00:27.
their future. That's... There are no words, are they? | :00:28. | :00:32.
Also, the motorcyclist's widow joining the campaign to prevent | :00:33. | :00:37.

This business is inside a prison and is helping its inmates to go | :00:42. | :00:44.
straight. We look ahead to the new Premier | :00:45. | :00:48.
league season with the help of two very different men. A 99`year`old | :00:49. | :00:53.
season ticket holder and the sports writer coming to the end of an era. | :00:54. | :01:02.
First tonight, police searching for three missing boys have arrested | :01:03. | :01:06.
two people in connection with their disappearance. | :01:07. | :01:09.
15`year`old Remus Matloch, and his two younger brothers, | :01:10. | :01:22.
vanished from their foster home in Sunderland on Monday. | :01:23. | :01:24.
Our correspondent, Peter Harris, is here with the latest. | :01:25. | :01:26.
This has all happened in the last hour, hasn?t it? | :01:27. | :01:31.
The boys have family in the Birmingham area and the two held a | :01:32. | :01:40.
34 and 39, a man and a woman and they are being questioned in | :01:41. | :01:43.
connection with the disappearances. Officers are on their way down to | :01:44. | :01:49.
timing. However, there is still no sign of the boys and to that end, | :01:50. | :01:54.
the police released more CCTV pictures of the boy `` boys at the | :01:55. | :02:03.
Metro where their journey began at around 530 on Monday but we don't | :02:04. | :02:07.
know where the journey ended. Police are still searching across the | :02:08. | :02:13.
country. Yes and they are trying to jog memories here so they released | :02:14. | :02:17.
the video today and handed out leaflets at Newcastle station and | :02:18. | :02:21.
that the coach station because they are convinced somebody must have | :02:22. | :02:27.
seen these boys at half past five or six o'clock on Sunday. They still | :02:28. | :02:31.
want help on that and they are still the king in the Edmonton area in | :02:32. | :02:37.
North London. The upshot is `` they are still looking. They have got two | :02:38. | :02:44.
arrests but this is still moving apace. | :02:45. | :02:47.
It can be the best of days. It can be the worst of days. | :02:48. | :02:50.
Whatever the outcome, today was the day the waiting ended for thousands | :02:51. | :02:53.
This year has seen some significant changes to the pattern of results. | :02:54. | :02:57.
There's been an increase in the number of A`star grades, | :02:58. | :03:00.
but a FALL in the overall pass rate ` the first in 32 years. | :03:01. | :03:03.
However, there is a record number of university places up for grabs. | :03:04. | :03:06.
One place celebrating success is Stockton 6th Form College. | :03:07. | :03:08.
Two years ago, Ofsted ruled it needed to make improvements. | :03:09. | :03:10.
Since then, the college has appointed a new principal, | :03:11. | :03:13.
and this year it's one of the best performing in the area. | :03:14. | :03:15.
Phil Connell was with some of the students as they opened | :03:16. | :03:18.
I've been stressed but I've got into university. To see grades a D grade | :03:19. | :03:45.
and an E grade. Nervous. I got one A* and three B grades. I'm pleased. | :03:46. | :03:52.
The grades could determine their future and possibly change their | :03:53. | :03:56.
lives. At Stockton sixth form college this morning A`level results | :03:57. | :04:00.
they had the usual mix of emotions. I was predict to D and E grades were | :04:01. | :04:09.
everything and I got an A. I am going travelling this year so it is | :04:10. | :04:12.
not too hectic. I'm still not very happy `` happy. It's... There are no | :04:13. | :04:24.
words, are they? It is just amazing. For students going on to further | :04:25. | :04:28.
education, this year there are a record number of university places | :04:29. | :04:32.
available. It is effectively a wires market so students with grades lower | :04:33. | :04:37.
than expected could still be offered a place of their choice. One girl | :04:38. | :04:42.
was holding an offer to read biology at Newcastle and she needed the a | :04:43. | :04:48.
grades. She got there were grades but they are still taking her. `` | :04:49. | :04:56.
Agrades. Stockton sixth form colleges now one of the best | :04:57. | :05:00.
performing in the region. Last year, 99% of A`level students passed | :05:01. | :05:05.
and this year is similar grades are expected. It follows an Ofsted | :05:06. | :05:10.
report two years ago which said the college needed improving so what is | :05:11. | :05:17.
their secret to their success? Hard work, dedication and a real concern | :05:18. | :05:22.
for our students and real individual support because they are what it is | :05:23. | :05:27.
all about. There was a double celebration at the college this | :05:28. | :05:29.
morning for identical twins who collected between them one A* and | :05:30. | :05:39.
three C grades. In Cumbria, more than 2000 students | :05:40. | :05:43.
have been taking up their results. Alison Freeman spent the morning at | :05:44. | :05:49.
Ullswater immunity college with the guest catchment area in the country. | :05:50. | :05:55.
What a way to find out your A`level results live on national television. | :05:56. | :06:05.
To A* grades. Darling! Sally got even better results than expected | :06:06. | :06:09.
and will be studying nursing in London after a difficult few years. | :06:10. | :06:15.
My grandparents were ill and my mum was caring for them. I failed to and | :06:16. | :06:22.
my others were low grades so I took the decision to reset the year and | :06:23. | :06:26.
then most debt father was diagnosed with cancer. So it has been quite | :06:27. | :06:36.
difficult. For Flora it was an emotional new `` moment as she found | :06:37. | :06:39.
out she had exceeded expect nations with the support of her boyfriend. | :06:40. | :06:46.
It's brilliant because we helped each other through it. It's great to | :06:47. | :06:50.
know all the hard work paid off for me and both of us. For schools `` | :06:51. | :06:58.
this goal is hailing today's results as a success with only three out of | :06:59. | :07:05.
100 students not being offered their first choice place at university. | :07:06. | :07:11.
Footer community college the largest catchment area in the country with | :07:12. | :07:16.
600 square miles of mainly rural, small villages, agricultural and | :07:17. | :07:23.
tourist industries. So many youngsters start their working day | :07:24. | :07:29.
on a farm or working in some capacity in the family business. | :07:30. | :07:32.
When they finish school at night they go back and they carry on doing | :07:33. | :07:38.
their duties. For Joe it was another successful day getting into Oxford | :07:39. | :07:48.
to study physics. I needed three, no two eight grades and one A*. That is | :07:49. | :07:58.
pretty good. I think I'm in. Ford twin brother Jack it was more | :07:59. | :08:01.
uncertain with one grade lower than he had hoped for but the University | :08:02. | :08:06.
of his choice still offered him a place. I'm relieved. Happy, yeah. | :08:07. | :08:15.
Surprised! Most of the students here got the results they wanted and said | :08:16. | :08:19.
they would head home for a well earned rest before the celebrations | :08:20. | :08:20.
begin. As we said, it can be the best | :08:21. | :08:23.
of days or the worst. Miss your grades | :08:24. | :08:26.
and your plans can be in tatters. Thousands of students in that | :08:27. | :08:29.
situation have spent their day ringing around universities, trying | :08:30. | :08:31.
to find themselves a new offer. Our political editor, Richard Moss, | :08:32. | :08:33.
is at one of the places handling This is Northumbria's call centre | :08:34. | :08:51.
and they have been on the go since seven o'clock this morning. They | :08:52. | :08:57.
have taken 3500 calls in that time and that is up around 65% on last | :08:58. | :09:03.
year. Some of that may be down to the fact that grades are down this | :09:04. | :09:07.
year but what do you put the surge in interest down to? We have had a | :09:08. | :09:13.
great year with great students coming through. There are limited | :09:14. | :09:17.
have been licking at excellent have been licking at excellent | :09:18. | :09:23.
candidates today. We see that as a measure of popularity. You have two | :09:24. | :09:30.
handle this with skill and tact because some can be upset but you | :09:31. | :09:34.
can offer hope? Yes, some plans haven't gone the way students have | :09:35. | :09:40.
hope that we can offer some brat `` advice and support and, if possible, | :09:41. | :09:47.
a place. We have had anecdotal is evidence that some universities are | :09:48. | :09:52.
offering a place even with lower grades. We really feel we should | :09:53. | :09:57.
focus on quality and we want to make sure we have an outstanding | :09:58. | :10:03.
experience for our students said there are fewer places in clearing | :10:04. | :10:07.
them in the past. Tuition fees doesn't seem to be a factor putting | :10:08. | :10:13.
people off? A couple of years ago it was something that people talked | :10:14. | :10:18.
about but students really see education as an investment and a lot | :10:19. | :10:21.
of students are willing to make that investment. If you want some | :10:22. | :10:29.
inspiration, one student was in this position two years ago and very | :10:30. | :10:34.
upset. She called Northumbria and hasn't looked back. It is still | :10:35. | :10:39.
horrible to think about because it was a horrible day. But I am so | :10:40. | :10:46.
grateful I am here. I've had same any more opportunities I wouldn't | :10:47. | :10:49.
have had if I had gone to my original first choice. The proposed | :10:50. | :10:55.
`` placement is in the Institute of neurology across the road and there | :10:56. | :10:59.
are semi`opportunities here I didn't know about before. | :11:00. | :11:06.
Alan is still with me. You are winding down now but is it worth | :11:07. | :11:09.
people calling you tomorrow? Absolutely. We will be open at half | :11:10. | :11:14.
past eight tomorrow. Give us a call and we would love to hear from you. | :11:15. | :11:19.
There is still hope if you slipped those grades today. | :11:20. | :11:28.
The RNLI had to rescue two cars in less than two hours at Redcar | :11:29. | :11:31.
after their owners were caught out by a fast`rising tide. | :11:32. | :11:34.
They received a number of 999 calls yesterday afternoon, | :11:35. | :11:36.
reporting a car stuck in the sea with two people on its roof. | :11:37. | :11:39.
The driver and passenger made it to safety and an RNLI tractor pulled | :11:40. | :11:42.
Then the lifeboat was called to another | :11:43. | :11:45.

It's thought the drivers were caught out by yesterday's tides which were | :11:49. | :11:53.
Motorcyclist Neil Hamilton from Sunderland was killed | :11:54. | :12:01.
when a reckless 4x4 driver pulled across the road into his path | :12:02. | :12:04.
The 60`year`old biker didn't stand a chance. | :12:05. | :12:07.
The car driver was jailed for 16 months after admitting | :12:08. | :12:09.
Now, Neil's widow is supporting the Think Bike safety campaign to | :12:10. | :12:13.
help prevent similar tragedies. Stephanie Cleasby reports. | :12:14. | :12:26.
Schoolteacher and motorbike infuse yes Neil Hamilton was killed in a | :12:27. | :12:38.

the agony of returning to the stretch of road where her husband | :12:46. | :12:50.
lost his life. It would've been my 37th wedding anniversary and I can't | :12:51. | :12:54.
put into words what it means that I have to go on with the rest of my | :12:55. | :13:00.
life without him. Neal was an experienced motorcyclist who passed | :13:01. | :13:05.
his skills on to others. Now, his loved ones are helping to promote | :13:06. | :13:10.
road safety. My husband wasn't the only one to be killed that year. 313 | :13:11. | :13:17.
other bikers were killed or serious `` seriously injured that year. That | :13:18. | :13:22.
is why I have asked for these bikes signs to be erected. If it prevent | :13:23. | :13:27.
another tragedy happening to another family it has been worthwhile. This | :13:28. | :13:31.
is the junction where Neill was killed. Since 2011 in the Durham and | :13:32. | :13:38.
Cleveland police areas, 209 motorcyclists have been killed or | :13:39. | :13:42.

This Message... Will help prevent more deaths. My sons knew I would be | :14:25. | :14:30.
worried about them on the roads because it doesn't matter how safe | :14:31. | :14:34.
you are as a white rider, it is about other people on the roads. | :14:35. | :14:39.
The director of a threatened West Cumbria factory says he hopes | :14:40. | :14:42.
A consultation is to be carried out surrounding the future of | :14:43. | :14:46.
64 people work at the factory on the Glasson industrial estate | :14:47. | :14:50.
The company has lost around ?4 million in three years, | :14:51. | :14:52.
and faces the possibility of closure. | :14:53. | :14:59.
Newcastle United and Sunderland football fans joined | :15:00. | :15:04.
a national protest in London today over the cost of | :15:05. | :15:07.
attending Premier League matches. The Football Supporters Federation | :15:08. | :15:09.
says nine out of ten fans think ticket prices are too expensive. | :15:10. | :15:13.
It organised a march to the Premier League headquarters and | :15:14. | :15:15.
the Football League calling for the game to be made more affordable. | :15:16. | :15:21.
We see a lot of normal people struggling to make ends meet and | :15:22. | :15:28.
stretching themselves at times to pay for tickets and that is a | :15:29. | :15:32.
problem in itself full. Maybe parents can't afford to take their | :15:33. | :15:37.
kids. Also, it is a very captive market. If you go to a supermarket, | :15:38. | :15:43.
there is always another supermarket down the road but if you are a food | :15:44. | :15:49.

It's hoped the Tall Ships Race could come to Sunderland in 2018. | :15:53. | :15:55.
The event has been hosted by Hartlepool and Tyneside in the past, | :15:56. | :15:58.
bringing in thousands of spectators and providing a significant boost to | :15:59. | :16:01.
But it's never been held in Sunderland. | :16:02. | :16:03.
Now a bid is being put together to bring the race to Wearside. | :16:04. | :16:06.

A prison on Teeside has revealed an unusual method of trying to guide | :16:38. | :16:43.
prisoners into work after they have completed their sentence. | :16:44. | :16:54.
Kirklevington Grange provides qualifications for prisoners meaning | :16:55. | :16:57.
that three out of four find employment. | :16:58. | :17:05.
A hive of industry on Teeside but not where you might expect. This | :17:06. | :17:10.
Kirklevington Grange is, a resettlement prison for those coming | :17:11. | :17:14.
to the end of their sentences. You can get your car washed here or eat | :17:15. | :17:22.
in the cafe. Ten businesses all services are here within the prison | :17:23. | :17:26.
gang `` ground and giving work to the inmates. The aim is to get the | :17:27. | :17:31.
qualifications which would show potential employers they can do a | :17:32. | :17:37.
job on release. We are creating a work ethos and the idea that | :17:38. | :17:42.
prisoners can do paid employment and be trusted to do it. We are building | :17:43. | :17:47.
confidence and delivering employability skills. It is the | :17:48. | :17:53.
biggest collection of businesses in a prison in the country. For Peter, | :17:54. | :17:59.
working in the cafe should help him into a full`time job on the outside | :18:00. | :18:03.
nine to five job. I have gained food nine to five job. I have gained food | :18:04. | :18:11.
and hygiene qualification so it increases my chances of getting a | :18:12. | :18:17.
job in the community. Danny's job is car washing and valeting but it | :18:18. | :18:21.
gives him more than that. I've been out of work for quite a long time so | :18:22. | :18:27.
working with the public, because I haven't well `` dealt with them for | :18:28. | :18:33.
so long, it is a way of integrating myself back into the community and | :18:34. | :18:38.
learning new skills for working outside. Eventually, getting on | :18:39. | :18:41.
parole and being released and getting a job. And that is pretty | :18:42. | :18:48.
much what all the prisoners want. A job and a chance of normality, a | :18:49. | :18:50.
working life beyond the fence. A great idea and good luck to them. | :18:51. | :19:03.
Time for sport and almost time for the return of the big boys. Team | :19:04. | :19:14.
Talk is back on Monday. The wait is almost over for the | :19:15. | :19:18.
region 's Premier league fans and Newcastle kick off their campaign on | :19:19. | :19:24.
Sunday. We went to meet one rather special supporter who, at 99, is as | :19:25. | :19:28.
if using a stick as ever about his beloved team. | :19:29. | :19:36.
James Errington is Newcastle United mad. He is the club 's oldest | :19:37. | :19:43.
season`ticket holder and he has been going to Saint James 's Park since | :19:44. | :19:48.
the late 1920s. Back then, a goal celebration looked a little | :19:49. | :19:54.
different. Oh, the men all wore hats will stop you didn't get the same | :19:55. | :20:05.
hat rack when they scored a goal. Over the decades, he has seen many | :20:06. | :20:10.
Newcastle United greats but his favourite remains Hughie Gallacher | :20:11. | :20:14.
who has the club 's best ever strike rate of 82%. He was just a star. You | :20:15. | :20:26.
would say, Hughie Gallaher and we Scots lad the best player you ever | :20:27. | :20:31.
had because of the dozens glory goal you put on the dole and sent back to | :20:32. | :20:39.
Scotland in the morning? `` if he doesn't score a goal. What does | :20:40. | :20:45.
James think the coming season will bring? With the foreign players and | :20:46. | :20:56.
One football writer can't claimed to you know, | :20:57. | :21:30.
have followed Sunderland'sfortunes for quite so long. But the Black | :21:31. | :21:45.
Cats visit on Sunday we'll be... The chance to spend more time with | :21:46. | :21:50.
his family was a major factor in his decision to leave Sunderland Echo | :21:51. | :21:56.
after almost 20 years. When he was appointed, he was the paper 's | :21:57. | :22:02.
fourth sports writer in a century. It has been a privilege. I've had a | :22:03. | :22:08.
really exciting time for top some of the characters I've covered have | :22:09. | :22:15.
been fantastic. The managers like Steve Bruce... I had a great | :22:16. | :22:16.
relationship with. Roy Keane and relationship with. Roy Keane and | :22:17. | :22:22.
others weren't so easy but when I first started reporting, this was a | :22:23. | :22:30.
derelict colliery. The new manager was a promising young manager called | :22:31. | :22:36.
Peter Reid. There has been a lot of water under the bridge. When I | :22:37. | :22:42.
started I was a kid and now I am older than the manager and the | :22:43. | :22:46.
chairman, which is not great! The biggest changes the stadium. While | :22:47. | :22:53.
Graham is impressed by the summer signings he is more impressed by the | :22:54. | :23:00.
manager himself. I think that he is an excellent manager. If it wasn't | :23:01. | :23:05.
for him Sunderland would be playing championship for this season. If he | :23:06. | :23:09.
can do something like that with the resources he had, it relies to team, | :23:10. | :23:19.
they will do so much better with the new signings. He is working to a | :23:20. | :23:22.
plan and there is no reason why they can't have a good season. He will | :23:23. | :23:28.
still covered home games but his new`found freedom will give him the | :23:29. | :23:31.
chance to reflect on a career that has never been down. It is a great | :23:32. | :23:40.
pleasure to cover the club every season month in month out and I will | :23:41. | :23:42.
miss it. Sunderland have confirmed the | :23:43. | :23:47.
signing of the Brighton winger tonight. Sunderland and new `` | :23:48. | :24:00.
Newcastle both have away ties. In cricket, Durham beat Surrey in | :24:01. | :24:06.
the one`day cup so they are still in with the chance of reaching the | :24:07. | :24:09.
quarterfinal and joining wrought `` Yorkshire. | :24:10. | :24:14.
Time for the weather. A bit hit and miss? | :24:15. | :24:18.
Yes, we had half a dozen lightning strikes income rear and it has been | :24:19. | :24:26.
unsettled across the region `` in Cumbria. | :24:27. | :24:32.
A few days ahead of the peak, this shooting star was snapped streaking | :24:33. | :24:40.
across the skies. Thank you for that. Tomorrow's headline though is | :24:41. | :24:45.
that it isn't great for spotting meteors. Stein cloudy. This evening, | :24:46. | :24:55.
more thunderstorms around in places and heavy showers are indicated by | :24:56. | :25:00.
bright yellows and greens. Drier weather as well though full top by | :25:01. | :25:05.
dawn, many parts are clear. Mostly light winds by Friday | :25:06. | :25:17.
morning. First thing tomorrow, quite a different day as we are in for | :25:18. | :25:22.
more sunshine and fewer showers. Where they do fall they are likely | :25:23. | :25:27.
to be lighter and shorter so nowhere near as unsettled as today. Still if | :25:28. | :25:33.
you showers spilling from the North in the afternoon. Some sunshine, | :25:34. | :25:39.
especially further east. Cool northerly breezes and north`easterly | :25:40. | :25:44.
breeze is so temperatures will be disappointing. Temperatures possibly | :25:45. | :25:55.
attach higher in Cumbria in sheltered inland areas. Most places | :25:56. | :26:01.
will not be that mild tomorrow. It may even feel autumnal. On Friday | :26:02. | :26:07.
evening, a high`pressure to the South and West tries to hang on and | :26:08. | :26:13.
it is that reach that makes things less showery tomorrow. But still the | :26:14. | :26:20.
dominant area of low pressure to the North pushes its way across the UK | :26:21. | :26:25.
again through Saturday, Sunday and into Monday full. The tight white | :26:26. | :26:32.
lines indicate strong winds on Saturday and Sunday. Lighter for a | :26:33. | :26:42.
time on Monday possibly. Unsettled, especially in the West. Showers over | :26:43. | :26:49.
Cumbria in the West. Sunday will sleep right spells but it is likely | :26:50. | :26:57.
to be breezy and feeling cool. In the north`east, a better chance of | :26:58. | :27:02.
paying drive through the day on Saturday. Sunday will be sunny in | :27:03. | :27:04.
places but also some showers. A last look at the headlines: Sir | :27:05. | :27:14.
Cliff Richard has dismissed as completely false and allegation that | :27:15. | :27:19.
he sexually assaulted a young boy in the 1980s. He issued a statement | :27:20. | :27:22.
this afternoon as release searched home in Berkshire. The alleged | :27:23. | :27:27.
incident is said to have taken place in South Yorkshire. | :27:28. | :27:32.
Two people have been arrested as a nationwide search continues for | :27:33. | :27:35.
three boys missing from their Sunderland foster home. | :27:36. | :27:41.
More on that at 10:25pm I hope you can join me for that. | :27:42. | :27:45. |
