Nearly 80 years on from the original Jarrow Crusade,

a group of protestors have set off to march to London to deliver

This time, the marchers are protesting

against what they see as the impending privatisation of the NHS.

An NHS spokesman said its budget had been increased by ?12.7 billion

and that it was committed to providing a free service.

It might be summer but it didn't feel like it at

South Tyneside at nine o'clock this morning as hundreds gathered for

this contemporary Jarrow Crusade. The brainchild of two women

from Darlington, news of the event has been spread by the most modern

phenomena, the social network. In the four months that We tweeted

the idea of the People's March for the NHS, over 4,000 people

registered so we hope people will join us en route.

We have a number of our 300 milers here today and more people will join

us as we move down the country. Three weeks of walking lie a head

for those who go the whole distance and there are plenty of others who

just want to show their support. We have to take this to London,

the government, and the Tory shires through the country

saying, the NHS is not for sale. It is making an impression

on the Labour Party and it will make a difference to their policy

if they win the next election. I'm not hopeful that it will make

an impression on the current Coalition really.

A long time ago a man called Alan Plater wrote

a play called Close the Coal House Door and he said the conscience

of the nation was stirred. Perhaps we might stir the conscience

of the nation a bit more and some action might come out of it.

At 10.45 they set off with some planning to stay with

it until the first staging point at Berkely, around nine miles away, and

some planned to go a lot farther. The marchers who go all the way will

have walked 285 miles following the same route as 78 years ago.

They hope to be there on September 6th.

Two people have died after a car hit a tree early this morning.

It happened around 3am at Whorlton in County Durham.

The police believe the Audi A4 was travelling from Barnard Castle.

Around 4,000 supermarket staff across the region have turned up to

work today in football shirts in memory of their colleague.

Staff at Morrisons stores have raised money in remembrance of

Liam Sweeney, who died on the Malaysia Airways Flight MH17.

Liam worked at the Killingworth store.
