A special Look North debate on the Scottish referendum hears | :00:15. | :00:24.
claims that independence cotld be a wake`up call for the North or | :00:25. | :00:27.
A special report on the North's Reservists training to take | :00:28. | :00:31.
the place of Army Regulars in a landscape from an | :00:32. | :00:33.
And she thought she'd never walk again. | :00:34. | :00:37.
But now she's doing the Great North Run. | :00:38. | :00:40.
In sport, Yorkshire and Durham do each other | :00:41. | :00:42.
a big favour at the top and bottom of the county championship table | :00:43. | :00:51.
You sack your manager and then the goals start gohng in | :00:52. | :00:55.
A speeding driver who allowdd his grandson to kneel on thd front | :00:56. | :01:07.
seat of his car, without a seatbelt, has been banned from driving. | :01:08. | :01:11.
66`year`old John Naisbitt, from Hetton`le`Hole in County | :01:12. | :01:14.
Durham, was caught by a mobhle speed camera in North Yorkshire. | :01:15. | :01:18.
Police could not believe what they were seeing. | :01:19. | :01:25.
A child appears to be kneelhng on the passenger seat, | :01:26. | :01:29.
The driver is lighting a cigarette and speeding at 70 miles | :01:30. | :01:35.
The car was being driven by 66`year`old John Naisbitt. | :01:36. | :01:41.
Today, he was disqualified for six months and fined ?140. | :01:42. | :01:47.
But in court, he argued his grandson was in a booster seat and claimed | :01:48. | :01:51.
This is the stretch of road he was driving along, | :01:52. | :01:59.
the A59, and this junction has become known as dangerous corner. | :02:00. | :02:05.
But as John Naisbitt approached he was speeding, he was lighting up | :02:06. | :02:09.
a cigarette and kneeling right next to him on the passenger seat was | :02:10. | :02:12.
North Yorkshire Police say this case should serve | :02:13. | :02:18.
as a warning to motorists to keep children safe in the car. | :02:19. | :02:24.
I've got children myself and I can understand that they want | :02:25. | :02:26.
to move about, but it is your duty as the driver | :02:27. | :02:29.
of that vehicle to be responsible for the care of that child. | :02:30. | :02:33.
If they are not restrained properly, you will be liable. | :02:34. | :02:36.
John Naisbitt told the magistrates he has lung cancer | :02:37. | :02:39.
He said his wife is severely disabldd. | :02:40. | :02:45.
But this was the fourth timd he had been caught speeding in thrde years. | :02:46. | :02:49.
Now he is banned from the roads for six months. | :02:50. | :02:53.
Police hope this will be a wake`up call. | :02:54. | :03:06.
An independent Scotland would be a wake`up call for the North East | :03:07. | :03:09.
and Cumbria, according to a leading SNP politician. | :03:10. | :03:12.
Christine Grahame made the claim in a special Look North deb`te | :03:13. | :03:15.
in Berwick that'll be broadcast later tonight. | :03:16. | :03:18.
But critics say a Yes vote in Scotland's referendum, | :03:19. | :03:20.
later this month, will harm our region's economy. | :03:21. | :03:23.
Here's our Political Correspondent, Mark Denten. | :03:24. | :03:29.
The clock is ticking and the polls are narrowing. | :03:30. | :03:31.
Scotland is about to make its most important constitutional | :03:32. | :03:33.
Here in the north`east and Cumbria, the only part | :03:34. | :03:40.
of Britain bordering Scotland, no one gets a vote, but in a special | :03:41. | :03:47.
Look North debate in Berwick, people across our region do have a say | :03:48. | :03:51.
Yes, if we are successful in boosting our | :03:52. | :03:56.
economy instead of just recdiving cuts all over the place which are | :03:57. | :04:01.
promised by Conservative and Labour, then we will stimulate the dconomy. | :04:02. | :04:06.
It would stimulate the North of England and give it | :04:07. | :04:08.
For those opposed to in inddpendent Scotland, they are concerned about | :04:09. | :04:14.
There is a real danger that economic`lly | :04:15. | :04:18.
We will be in competition with England. | :04:19. | :04:23.
On the border particularly, there are investment on both sides, | :04:24. | :04:28.
and there is a real danger that businesses will not invest | :04:29. | :04:30.
But it is not only independence focusing minds. | :04:31. | :04:37.
There are a raft of powers `lready in Scotland, free Universitx | :04:38. | :04:40.
tuition, free prescriptions, things we simply don't get. | :04:41. | :04:45.
Those of us here who live in England, do you feel aggrieved | :04:46. | :04:48.
or disadvantaged compared to Scottish neighbours? | :04:49. | :04:50.
Can you show your hands if you feel that way? | :04:51. | :04:55.
I should be going to university next year | :04:56. | :04:58.
and I will have to pay ?9000 more than those that live 2 miles away. | :04:59. | :05:04.
The Scottish referendum is a fortnight tomorrow, a fortnight | :05:05. | :05:07.
of fierce campaigning and ddbate about Scotland's future which will | :05:08. | :05:09.
As you saw, our Political Editor Richard Moss was chairing the debate | :05:10. | :05:22.
Which issues were the main concerns of the audience? | :05:23. | :05:36.
There are local concerns, slall businesses in particular. | :05:37. | :05:42.
They are worried about the currency, some of them have workers from | :05:43. | :05:49.
Scotland, what will be paid them in? Can they take Scottish banknotes? | :05:50. | :05:55.
And there are concerns about the imbalances that we heard about. Free | :05:56. | :05:58.
personal care, free prescriptions, tuition. Nationalists want to cut | :05:59. | :06:10.
business taxes, could be in your businesses from north of thd | :06:11. | :06:16.
border. Others might not want to be in an independent Scotland. But | :06:17. | :06:23.
there was some sympathy, in the audience, that Scotland is of long | :06:24. | :06:25.
way from Westminster. Just like them. There will be changes | :06:26. | :06:35.
affecting our region? If thdre is a no vote, more powers will come to | :06:36. | :06:39.
Scotland. There was a feeling that something needs to be done for the | :06:40. | :06:44.
North of England. Some people wanted the idea of our own referendum | :06:45. | :06:45.
revived. And you can see the debate | :06:46. | :06:53.

the plan, saying it leaves Is the new Army Reserve a m`tch | :08:08. | :08:10.
for the regular soldier? Damian O'Neil sent us this dxclusive | :08:11. | :08:15.
report from Croatia, where the 5th Fusiliers havd been in | :08:16. | :08:17.
training for a new theatre of war. The town of Slunj sits in | :08:18. | :08:28.
the mountains of central Croatia, surrounded by 300 square kilometres | :08:29. | :08:32.
of dense, impenetrable forest. It's on the main north`south route | :08:33. | :08:37.
through the country Britain needs thousands mord | :08:38. | :09:18.
part`time soldiers, and the 5th Fusilers have responded by offering | :09:19. | :09:21.
specialist roles within its ranks. to be better, stronger, thex have | :09:22. | :10:36.
got to be better than the rdst. This visit to Croatia has bden | :10:37. | :10:45.
long`planned, but in a world which can sometimes feel more | :10:46. | :10:48.
uncertain than ever, it's h`rd not to wonder if joint exercises between | :10:49. | :10:52.
Britain and European allies might Do you get a sense of the hhstory | :10:53. | :10:56.
of this place just being here? The area we are in at the moment, | :10:57. | :11:02.
just to our back here, In that direction, there was a | :11:03. | :11:06.
defensive position that was occupied And just to illustrate the shifting | :11:07. | :11:13.
alliances in Europe, considdr that while the Croats are training with | :11:14. | :11:20.
the British Army, they're also doing so with the people who until quite | :11:21. | :11:23.
recently were their sworn enemies. Yes, we had an exercise called | :11:24. | :11:29.
immediate response two years ago. Serbs were included. Not an entire | :11:30. | :11:42.
troop, but a section. It is a new experience, | :11:43. | :11:45.
but it is developing, Modern British army rations are a | :11:46. | :11:50.
long way from what British soldiers used to have to eat and are now | :11:51. | :11:55.
widely regarded as being very good. In a similar way, the Army reserve | :11:56. | :11:59.
bears little resemblance to Regiments like the fifth Fusiliers | :12:00. | :12:01.
are now turning out high`qu`lity The big challenge | :12:02. | :12:05.
for the ministry of defence and the country is whether or not we | :12:06. | :12:09.
can recruit enough of them. And on Friday, | :12:10. | :12:17.
you can see the second of D`mian's reports from Croatia when hd'll be | :12:18. | :12:20.
looking at how the North`East is faring in the quest to recrtit | :12:21. | :12:23.
thousands of part`time soldhers in Now, from the present day | :12:24. | :12:25.
to memories of another war. The Royal Canadian Airforce | :12:26. | :12:32.
Lancaster that was grounded here last week has finally left | :12:33. | :12:34.
the region. The World War Two plane took part | :12:35. | :12:37.
in a fly`past over the formdr bomber base of Middleton St George, | :12:38. | :12:40.
but developed engine troubld. It had to have one | :12:41. | :12:43.
of its four engines replaced. The work was done in a formdr | :12:44. | :12:46.
wartime bomber hangar at wh`t is Last week, Vera, one of onlx two | :12:47. | :12:49.

for the former Royal Canadi`n Air An engine malfunctioned | :13:08. | :13:11.
and she has been here ever since. A long repair job for the crew | :13:12. | :13:18.
of this bomber, but they have been Especially at the airport hdre, we | :13:19. | :13:22.
have had the help of so manx people. Just lay people that work | :13:23. | :13:26.
here that want to help. We have had volunteers come in from | :13:27. | :13:30.
all different areas on the `irport. They have been very helpful | :13:31. | :13:34.
to get us going again. David is just one person who has | :13:35. | :13:37.
provided expertise It is just a question of fittings, | :13:38. | :13:42.
piperwork. All the little fiddly bits | :13:43. | :13:49.
really that take the time. That has allowed the Lancaster to | :13:50. | :14:02.
finally leave, back to Canada. But taking with her more | :14:03. | :14:05.
than she came with. A small but significant itel | :14:06. | :14:07.
of Royal Canadian Air Force history She just wondered if you wotld | :14:08. | :14:10.
like to take it back with you. It will have a place of honour | :14:11. | :14:21.
in our museum. The knife was found in Middlesbrough | :14:22. | :14:28.
and belonged to an airman who was His fate is unknown, but solething | :14:29. | :14:31.
of him is returning home. Coming up shortly, Mark Tulhp | :14:32. | :14:45.
has the latest sports round`up. And we hear from Tim Healy | :14:46. | :14:51.
as he rehearses his key rold in tomorrow's Great North Rtn One | :14:52. | :14:55.
Million opening ceremony. And tomorrow's weather looks fairly | :14:56. | :15:09.
quiet. Join me later for thd forecast. | :15:10. | :15:13.
Great North runners will nedd no reminding that there are just four | :15:14. | :15:16.
Among those taking part is Carolyn Forster from Newcastle. | :15:17. | :15:21.
She suffered a freak back injury, and had been a wheelchair user | :15:22. | :15:24.
But, after two operations, she can walk again | :15:25. | :15:29.
and she'll be speedwalking the 3.1 mile Great North Run course | :15:30. | :15:32.
It's something Carolyn Forster never thought she would do, | :15:33. | :15:39.
train for the world's biggest half marathon on her feet | :15:40. | :15:43.
because she has spent the l`st 1 years on crutches or in a wheelchair | :15:44. | :15:47.
When my daughter was little, and I was lifting her out | :15:48. | :15:53.
of her car seat from the car, it was just as I lifted her and twhsted to | :15:54. | :15:57.
step out of the car, I felt three of my discs explode in my b`ck. | :15:58. | :16:03.
She had two operations on the NHS and there was some improvemdnt. | :16:04. | :16:08.
But in 2004, things took a turn for the worse and Carolyn h`d to use | :16:09. | :16:11.
a wheelchair full`time and was in unbearable pain. | :16:12. | :16:18.
Even medication would not t`ke the pain away completely. | :16:19. | :16:22.
I couldn't stand for any length of time without my legs collapsing | :16:23. | :16:26.
under me because the pain would suddenly become very severe. | :16:27. | :16:35.
She had given up all hope of being painfree but learnt to cope | :16:36. | :16:38.
with her disability using special devices to help her. | :16:39. | :16:42.
She contacted a specialist backpain surgeon. | :16:43. | :17:04.
Two operations and ?48,000 later, she could walk again. | :17:05. | :17:06.
I wasn't really walking unaided until Christmas timd. | :17:07. | :17:08.
To be facing the prospect of walking 13 miles is | :17:09. | :17:10.
It has been a slow and long recovery, but on Stnday, | :17:11. | :17:21.
Carolyn will put her best foot forward alongside tens | :17:22. | :17:23.
Many will be hoping to beat a personal best time, Carolxn will | :17:24. | :17:29.
And the very best of luck to Carolyn and everyone else taking part | :17:30. | :17:41.
Before that, of course, we've the excitement of tomorrow's one | :17:42. | :17:47.
Fireworks, music, celebritids, it's all going to be happenhng | :17:48. | :17:51.
Preparations are well underway, and Sharuna Sagar's live | :17:52. | :17:55.
Well, it's all happening here. The stages have been built, the cameras | :17:56. | :18:12.
have been rigged. The lighthng is set up. And look at this lot. These | :18:13. | :18:16.
are volunteer performers. They have been hoisted up and they wotld do | :18:17. | :18:23.
some sort of acrobatic performance. It looks a bit dangerous to me. And | :18:24. | :18:28.
quite a lot of men here with high visibility jackets on. You just know | :18:29. | :18:35.
something big is going to h`ppen. And by big, I mean aspect h`ck ever | :18:36. | :18:41.
Jordy opening ceremony. Bashcally, the story of the north`east is going | :18:42. | :18:47.
to be told on and around thd time through music, Art, perform`nce | :18:48. | :18:58.
narrated by two performers, Jill Halfpenny and Tim Healy. Elha, he | :18:59. | :19:10.
spoke to me about his involvement. I'm narrating the whole thing | :19:11. | :19:18.
with the lovely Jill Halfpenny. We are basically the voices of the | :19:19. | :19:22.
Tyne behind this fantastic score. It is a celebration | :19:23. | :19:25.
of the history of the Tyne. It will be great and | :19:26. | :19:28.
the music is haunting, beautiful. There'll not be a dry eye | :19:29. | :19:31.
on the Quayside, hopefully. his guitar about. And an deck will | :19:32. | :19:58.
also be here. I don't think they are going to do let's ready to rumble, | :19:59. | :20:04.
but you never know. If you have not got your ticket already, I'l sorry, | :20:05. | :20:08.
they've all gone. All 30,000 tickets have gone. Thank you. A busx night | :20:09. | :20:17.
tomorrow. We will be there `s well tomorrow. It should be good. | :20:18. | :20:20.
I haven't got my ticket! It's | :20:21. | :20:24.
a competition with fond memories for Carlisle United who most | :20:25. | :20:25.
recently won it at Wembley hn 2 11. So perhaps we shouldn't be too | :20:26. | :20:28.
surprised that the Cumbrians at last got back to winning ways | :20:29. | :20:31.
with victory in the Mind you they had just sackdd | :20:32. | :20:33.
their manager. Captain Paul Thirlwell | :20:34. | :20:36.
and goalkeeping coach Tony Caig took charge of Carlisle for | :20:37. | :20:41.
their tie with Accrington Stanley. The Cumbrians were looking to pick | :20:42. | :20:45.
themselves up after Graham Kavannagh's sacking | :20:46. | :20:48.
and a 5`0 loss to Cambridge. But they seemed to be heading | :20:49. | :20:51.
for defeat again after the home side took thd lead | :20:52. | :20:54.
though Marcus Carver's clevdr lob. But within three minutes, | :20:55. | :20:57.
the visitors were level through Antony Sweeney with | :20:58. | :20:59.
his second goal of the season. Carlisle then took | :21:00. | :21:01.
the lead through Kyle Dempsdy. The third goal came | :21:02. | :21:03.
in slightly strange circumstances. Several players, | :21:04. | :21:07.
including Billy Paynter, thought he was offside when he headed hn, but | :21:08. | :21:12.
it was given and Carlilse sdaled `` Carlisle their first win of this | :21:13. | :21:27.
campaign. York meanwhile are still se`rching | :21:28. | :21:29.
for their first victory. Keith Lowe possibly should have put | :21:30. | :21:31.
them in front, But League One side Barnslex | :21:32. | :21:34.
were simply too strong. Devante Cole scored their fhrst | :21:35. | :21:37.
in the 63rd minute, and Kane Hemmings stunning strike | :21:38. | :21:39.
made it 2`0 ten minutes frol time. York have managed plenty of draws, | :21:40. | :21:42.
but that first win is still proving In cricket today, | :21:43. | :21:45.
mutually benefical victories at either end of the Division One | :21:46. | :21:53.
table for Yorkshire and Durham. Five wickets | :21:54. | :21:56.
from Adil Rashid helped Yorkshire beat Lancashire at Old Trafford to | :21:57. | :21:57.
move a step closer to winning The home side's final wicket was | :21:58. | :22:00.
taken fittingly by Adam Lyth, who shared that county record | :22:01. | :22:04.
sixth`wicket stand of 296 with Rashid on Day Three | :22:05. | :22:09.
of the Roses match. The Tykes eventually won by an | :22:10. | :22:12.
innings despite Khawaja's cdntury. But captain Andrew Dall has been | :22:13. | :22:21.
banned after an altercation. And their victory did releg`tion | :22:22. | :22:28.
threatened Durham a big favour. The reigning champions now climb | :22:29. | :22:30.
above Lancashire after winnhng themselves today by 54 runs against | :22:31. | :22:32.
title hopefuls Nottinghamshhre. The two sides meet again in | :22:33. | :22:35.
Saturday's one`day cup semi`final. While our leading rugby league clubs | :22:36. | :22:38.
still have plenty to play for in terms of promotion play`offs | :22:39. | :22:40.
and relegation battles, it's only just beginning for Newcastld Falcons | :22:41. | :22:46.
with another rugby union se`son Saturday's opening game is ` tough | :22:47. | :22:48.
one ` a trip to mighty Leicdster. But are they better | :22:49. | :22:53.
prepared this time? On his return to the Premiership | :22:54. | :22:58.
with the Falcons last season, director of rugby Dean Rich`rds | :22:59. | :23:01.
and his squad were constantly looking over their shoulders, | :23:02. | :23:03.
only narrowly keeping ahead With a full pre`season this time | :23:04. | :23:05.
and ten new signings, the latest squad does at le`st on | :23:06. | :23:08.
paper, and plastic, look stronger. If you look at the signings and | :23:09. | :23:15.
the change in coaching personnel, and also the pitch as well, | :23:16. | :23:18.
being a 3G pitch as well, and look at the quality of the signings as | :23:19. | :23:21.
well I think you'll appreci`te that actually there will be a se` change | :23:22. | :23:25.
in terms of how we will plax. It was difficult to play rugby last | :23:26. | :23:29.
year on the pitch, but this year, The quality of the players will | :23:30. | :23:32.
dictate that, the quality of the pitch will dictate that and the | :23:33. | :23:39.
quality of the coaching that it out. So how confident is the skipper | :23:40. | :23:47.
that things will only get bdtter? Probably a completely different | :23:48. | :23:53.
place from where we were It was always going to be h`rd | :23:54. | :23:55.
coming up from the championship in terms of the recruitment side | :23:56. | :23:59.
of things and how late we fhnished But this year, Dean has signed some | :24:00. | :24:02.
quality players, there's a lot of them coming in and are going to | :24:03. | :24:06.
add a lot of quality to the squad. As long as we make big strides | :24:07. | :24:10.
from where we were last year, And as long as we go into the game | :24:11. | :24:13.
with confidence and belief that we The owners of Newcastle Racdcourse | :24:14. | :24:18.
say they're still confident a new ?10 million all`weather floodlit | :24:19. | :24:22.
circuit will be able to host races. The British Horseracing Authority is | :24:23. | :24:24.
blocking the move because rules state that each day's | :24:25. | :24:26.
racing programme must include two races over | :24:27. | :24:29.
a distance longer than the proposed track could accommodate, and the BHA | :24:30. | :24:31.
has refused to grant an exelption. But the racecourse's owners say they | :24:32. | :24:34.
are committed and confident that the We shall see. Thank you verx much. | :24:35. | :24:53.
Time for the weather. Tomorrow's begin bent? | :24:54. | :24:58.
Thanks for the photographs. He is a sign of things to come over the next | :24:59. | :25:28.
few days, the leaves are beginning to turn off tunnel `` autumnal. | :25:29. | :25:36.
Today, some cloud around. Btt it did break and give us some sunnx spells. | :25:37. | :25:43.
Temperatures peaked at 21 Cdlsius in Carlisle this afternoon. Thhs | :25:44. | :25:46.
evening, we will keep a fair amount of cloud overnight. But it should be | :25:47. | :25:51.
largely drive. Some misty conditions and fog patches here and thdre. | :25:52. | :25:56.
Temperatures for most places in double figures. Tomorrow, a bit of a | :25:57. | :26:09.
grey and misty start. Just like this morning. A lot of low cloud and | :26:10. | :26:12.
missed and poor visibility. But it should lift and clear during the | :26:13. | :26:19.
day. Some sunshine for most of us and staying pretty warm. It would | :26:20. | :26:23.
not surprise me if somewherd in Cumbria again hit 21 or 22 Celsius. | :26:24. | :26:30.
It'll be a shade cooler on the north`east coast. High pressure has | :26:31. | :26:36.
been keeping the weather fahrly settled over the last few d`ys. It | :26:37. | :26:42.
hangs on for a while, but things become more complicated tow`rds the | :26:43. | :26:45.
end of the week as that weather front comes in from the North. That | :26:46. | :26:53.
law develops to the north of the UK. Next few days, most places dry, some | :26:54. | :27:01.
broken cloud, had small clotd on Friday, especially later in the day. | :27:02. | :27:08.
We will see that brain the size words on Saturday. Most places will | :27:09. | :27:12.
dry up again on Saturday. `` that brain. | :27:13. | :27:18.
Feeling fresher for the weekend again. Keep your pictures | :27:19. | :27:27.
Thank you very much. That is it for now. We will be back at 1024. | :27:28. | :27:42.
Barbican join us. Goodbye. | :27:43. | :27:48. |
