Hello and welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:07.:00:08.

Is your tanning salon giving you a dangerously high dose of TV?

:00:09.:00:12.

Three`quarters of North East sun beds are breaching the legal limit.

:00:13.:00:14.

The women who spearheaded the NHS protest march to London.

:00:15.:00:19.

We travel coast to coast as our Scottish neighbours prepare

:00:20.:00:24.

And, were you one in a millhon, streaming across the Tyne Bridge

:00:25.:00:31.

Tracey was the one millionth finisher.

:00:32.:00:33.

And she's live in the Look North studio tonight.

:00:34.:00:39.

Elsewhere, in sport, we look back at a good weekdnd

:00:40.:00:41.

Ben Stokes helps Durham book their place in the One`Day Cup final!

:00:42.:01:05.

The BBC has learned that up to three`quarters of sun beds

:01:06.:01:08.

in shops across the North East could be illdgal

:01:09.:01:10.

Figures, revealed on tonight's Inside Out, show that, in some

:01:11.:01:12.

In Newcastle, 80% of salon beds were emitting dangerous levels

:01:13.:01:18.

There's been a crackdown by the North East Trading Standards

:01:19.:01:22.

They're trying to make all shops use safe tubes,

:01:23.:01:26.

For the first time ever, Tr`ding Standards are on a special operation

:01:27.:01:37.

We have got 33 premises that we are aware of.

:01:38.:01:50.

0.3 is the safe level of radiation. At this shop, the most powerful

:01:51.:01:57.

bulbs here are totally illegal. We have been finding levels

:01:58.:02:07.

as high as one, 1.2. We are talking three times

:02:08.:02:10.

the limit. We approached the shop for comments,

:02:11.:02:11.

but were told the owner declined. And it is not just here where

:02:12.:02:14.

the law is being broken. When they tested in Durham,

:02:15.:02:17.

there was a 62% chance 80% of shops were breaking

:02:18.:02:20.

the law in North Tyneside, and in Newcastle, 84% of beds failed

:02:21.:02:28.

the original testing. Three`quarters of all suntan beds

:02:29.:02:32.

being used by customers in the North East

:02:33.:02:34.

were found to be illegal. I am at the dermatology

addict. We had a sunbed at home and I was on

:03:18.:03:21.

it constantly. We cannot say that sunbeds caused

:03:22.:03:25.

your skin cancer. Not at all. But I was advisdd that

:03:26.:03:31.

it was highly likely that mx cancer would return, should I go b`ck near

a sunbed. The Middlesbrough salon gets a

:03:36.:03:40.

warning for now. Trading St`ndards have more powerful deterrents like

:03:41.:03:42.

suspending dangerous sunbed from use. An effective weapon in the war

:03:43.:03:47.

on illegal equipment. And you can see more

they are not independent whdn I go to them with a problem, and

:05:02.:05:04.

it's invested 12 billion in the NHS since the coalition came to power,

:05:05.:05:12.

and the use of the private sector in the NHS represents just 6%

:05:13.:05:16.

of the NHS budget. But, back at home, the organisers

:05:17.:05:20.

insist it's being sold off. 70% of contracts have gone

:05:21.:05:28.

to private healthcare providers That is increasing exponenthally,

:05:29.:05:31.

that is the problem. Their protest has seen huge support

on Look North, our political correspondent Mark Denten is on

a border trail, from west to east. And he joins us from

:08:49.:08:51.

a lovely spot overlooking Scotland. This bit of Cumbria is the closest

:08:52.:09:04.

you can get to Scotland without getting your feet wet. Therd is the

:09:05.:09:10.

sole way. Experts say there is an invisible line in the water that

:09:11.:09:15.

divides the English bit frol the Scottish bit. Either way, in a

:09:16.:09:19.

couple of weeks, on that side, there is a lot of political heat `nd

:09:20.:09:24.

argument. What do people thhnk on this side of the border? I `m on a

:09:25.:09:29.

border Trail, this is the fhrst story.

:09:30.:09:33.

a couple of cormorants drying their wings on the edge of the marsh.

:09:34.:10:12.

We don't really see the border at all, the same as the birds,

:10:13.:10:15.

They come here as it is a huge estuary full of food.

:10:16.:10:20.

My main concern would be if, whatever the result might bd,

:10:21.:10:23.

Tomorrow, we go to Cumbria for our report.

:10:24.:12:02.

We relive the Great North Rtn, and meet the one millionth finisher

:12:03.:12:16.

And a fairly quiet weather forecast, and some great pictures.

:12:17.:12:23.

Now, were you pounding the route from Newcastle to

:12:24.:12:26.

The 34th Great North Run took place in blazing sunshine, with a record

:12:27.:12:32.

number of entrants, including that one millionth finisher.

:12:33.:12:34.

Yes, we'll be meeting Tracex Cramond in a moment.

:12:35.:12:36.

But here's a reminder of a memorable day on Tyneshde.

:12:37.:12:43.

# I jumped so high I touched the clouds. #

:12:44.:13:04.

It is quite unique, the way the city absorbs thd race.

:13:05.:13:11.

# This is going to be the best day of my life...

:13:12.:13:25.

I heard a bang behind me. Then I was

:13:26.:14:11.

A lovely lady, a credit to the event, the region.

:14:12.:14:16.

# This is going to be the best day of my life... #

:14:17.:14:28.

Well, we saw Tracey Cramond's big moment there.

:14:29.:14:31.

And here she is in the studio with us now.

:14:32.:14:35.

It was a pretty tough run for everyone.

:14:36.:14:50.

Not least because it was so hot Every mile felt like ten. The last

:14:51.:14:55.

few miles felt longer. That moment when you found xou were

:14:56.:15:00.

the 1,000,000th finisher. I nearly fell into his arms. An

:15:01.:15:05.

unbelievable shock that I al still recovering from.

:15:06.:15:09.

In some ways, some things are meant to be. You actually stopped to have

:15:10.:15:13.

someone near the finishing line and if you hadn't, it wouldn't have

:15:14.:15:17.

happened. I had slowed down, too sharp for

:15:18.:15:22.

someone to assist a physically challenged entrant who had fallen

:15:23.:15:29.

right at the finish line. Ddstiny is what destiny is.

:15:30.:15:30.

Amazing. I know you have been at the

:15:31.:15:35.

Butterwick Hospice for us, xou were running The Den yesterday, to raise

:15:36.:15:39.

money. I chose Butterwick because H have

:15:40.:15:43.

always supported the northern charities, this is where I `m from.

:15:44.:15:49.

I chose this hospice becausd my late mum loved the children's services

:15:50.:15:56.

offered to our region. They do a fantastic job. It is a nice, lovely,

:15:57.:16:04.

northern charity. The inspiration for the Gre`t North

:16:05.:16:07.

Run was the fun run that Brdndan Foster saw around New Zealand.

:16:08.:16:20.

Someone has suggested a neat idea. Wouldn't it be nice to send back be

:16:21.:16:26.

1,000,000th run across the line to the race in New Zealand which

:16:27.:16:31.

inspired Brendan to create the whole concept in the first place? I am

:16:32.:16:34.

glad I am not in charge of the budget here!

:16:35.:16:41.

Brendan has been on to us and next March he will be flying you to New

:16:42.:16:45.

Zealand for the run. How do you feel?

:16:46.:16:51.

As bad as I thought yesterd`y. It is much shorter. It is only five

:16:52.:16:56.

miles. A trip to New Zealand. It is a

:16:57.:17:02.

beautiful place, lovely people. Will you take your special trainers?

:17:03.:17:07.

I don't think so. I will get some new ones.

:17:08.:17:10.

How have you enjoyed the whole experience? It has been surreal

:17:11.:17:16.

Yesterday was a blur of talking to people, meeting the press. H gave

:17:17.:17:21.

one young man a signature and I thought, this is crazy! Completely

:17:22.:17:28.

insane, bless him. This morning, I managed to catch my

:17:29.:17:35.

breath a little. Midday, it peaked. Thank you for joining us.

:17:36.:17:38.

Of course, finishing well before me and Tracey

:17:39.:17:40.

He lost out in a sprint finhsh last year, and he wasn't going to make

:17:41.:17:50.

It came down to a straight race between Mo `nd

:17:51.:17:53.

And the double Olympic and Duropean champ became the first Brithsh

:17:54.:17:57.

The women's race was a pretty good one, too, with Mary Keitany breaking

:17:58.:18:03.

Paula Radcliffe's course record by the smallest of margins.

:18:04.:18:05.

Britain's Gemma Steel crosshng the line in second with a personal best.

:18:06.:18:08.

In the wheelchair race, Carlisle's Simon Lawson came second in

:18:09.:18:13.

the men's competition, and there was a second place, too, for Tedssider

:18:14.:18:16.

Jade Jones who was beaten bx Shelley Woods in the women's race.

:18:17.:18:20.

And there was a local victory to cheer in the Great North City Games

:18:21.:18:26.

on the Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside on Saturday.

:18:27.:18:29.

Stockton's Richard Kilty winning the 150m sprint,

:18:30.:18:34.

just edging out America's Mhchael Rodgers in a photo finish.

:18:35.:18:43.

And that wasn't the only top`class sport in the region at the weekend.

:18:44.:18:46.

We also had some superb cricket at Chester`le`Street.

:18:47.:18:52.

And Durham fans are planning a trip to Lord's in a coupld

:18:53.:18:56.

of weeks' time, because the county are through to only the second

:18:57.:18:59.

And they're heading there on the back of a record`bre`king

:19:00.:19:05.

When Ben Stokes is in the mood, he can demolish

:19:06.:19:07.

Some felt the 23`year`old, born in New Zealand but raised in Ctmbria,

:19:08.:19:13.

A broken wrist, suffered when he punched a dressing room

:19:14.:19:19.

locker in frustration at behng out for a duck, certainly didn't help.

:19:20.:19:22.

But, sometimes, things just go your way and, when Notts wicket keeper

:19:23.:19:25.

Chris Read missed this chance, you just felt it was going to Bdn's day.

:19:26.:19:36.

Definitely, especially getthng dropped, and through the legs,

:19:37.:19:42.

In all, Stokes smashed 24 boundaries, 18 fours and six sixes,

:19:43.:19:50.

It was a record for the county, and helped them to their best

:19:51.:19:55.

A century from captain James Taylor kept Notts in the Royal London Cup

:19:56.:20:00.

semi`final, until the closing stages.

:20:01.:20:02.

But it was Stokes, who else, who took

:20:03.:20:04.

the visiting skipper's wickdt, to send Durham through to a final with

:20:05.:20:07.

Watching last year, before that.

:20:08.:20:20.

We found it difficult at tiles through the season, injuries.

:20:21.:20:34.

We have something wonderful to look forward to in three wedks'

:20:35.:20:37.

And one team who've already lifted a trophy at Lord's this season are

:20:38.:20:40.

the chaps from the Woodhousd Grange Club, just outside York.

:20:41.:20:43.

They beat the wonderfully`named Great

:20:44.:20:44.

and Little Tew, from Oxfordshire, by 10 wickets, at the home of cricket

:20:45.:20:47.

yesterday, to win the National Village Cup for the third thme.

:20:48.:20:50.

With the international break, Sunderland, Newcastle

:20:51.:20:53.

and Middlesbrough were without games this weekend, but our lower

:20:54.:20:55.

league sides were in action, and they all managed to avoid ddfeat.

:20:56.:20:58.

Caretakers captain Paul Thirlwell and goalkeeping coach Tony Caig were

:20:59.:21:05.

at the helm for a second tile, as Carlisle went looking

:21:06.:21:08.

for their first League win of the season against Wimblddon

:21:09.:21:12.

Also in the stands were a rdported four possible permanent replacements

:21:13.:21:15.

for sacked manager Graham K`vannagh, including former Cumbrians boss and

:21:16.:21:17.

It was a distastrous start for the home side.

:21:18.:21:26.

Dave Symmington will probably have nightmares about gifting this

:21:27.:21:28.

But Carlisle were level within ten minutes, through Kyle Dempsdy.

:21:29.:21:37.

The visitors went on to retake the lead.

:21:38.:21:39.

But it was 2`2 just before half time.

:21:40.:21:43.

Dempsey, with his second of the game, and third of the season.

:21:44.:21:46.

The second half saw the Cumbrians seemingly en route to victory.

:21:47.:21:50.

Josh Gillies' strike put thdm team ahead on 52 minutes,

:21:51.:21:54.

But, with just 10 minutes to play, Gary Dicker was judged to h`ve

:21:55.:22:00.

Wimbledon scored the resulthng penalty, and piled the pressure on.

:22:01.:22:06.

The result was 90th`minute heartache for Carlisle,

:22:07.:22:09.

Hartlepool put an end to Shrewsbury Town's unbeaten start

:22:10.:22:17.

Loan striker Charlie Wyke from Middlesbrough opened

:22:18.:22:21.

Then, 11 minutes from time, a swift counter`attack and a cool fhnish

:22:22.:22:27.

After five straight draws, York finally got their first League

:22:28.:22:32.

Michael Coulson put the vishtors ahead just three minutes in.

:22:33.:22:39.

12 minutes later, star of the show Wes Fletcher put York two up.

:22:40.:22:44.

Despite having a man sent off, Stevenage managed to get level, Tom

:22:45.:22:47.

But Fletcher kept his cool from the spot for the winner,

:22:48.:22:55.

as York picked up their first three points of the season.

:22:56.:23:01.

Falcons boss Dean Richards was less than impressed with the refdree

:23:02.:23:05.

as his side lost the first game of Rugby Union's new Premiership

:23:06.:23:08.

The boot of Freddie Burn gave Tigers a 12`3 half`time lead, but ht was

:23:09.:23:13.

the Falcons who scored the first try of the game, a superb break

:23:14.:23:17.

by 21`year`old full`back Silon Hammersley, on his Premiership

:23:18.:23:19.

debut, put Richard Mayhew through, who had an unopposed run to

:23:20.:23:22.

But a quick`fire hat`trick from last season's top try scorer

:23:23.:23:28.

Although an apparent offsidd from the Tigers went unnoticed

:23:29.:23:34.

on this occasion, as he intercepted the ball to run

:23:35.:23:36.

Andy Saull's try from a rolling maul at least ended

:23:37.:23:41.

But the Falcons will be looking for vital points from Sunday's first

:23:42.:23:49.

And in Rugby League, it went down to the wire.

:23:50.:23:55.

But Whitehaven narrowly avohded relegation from the Championship

:23:56.:23:57.

They beat Swinton 44`18, but had to rely on Featherstone

:23:58.:24:01.

Workington, already in the playoffs, beat Dewsbury 23`4.

:24:02.:24:10.

And it's been announced tod`y that more than ?1 million was brought

:24:11.:24:13.

into West Cumbria's economy by the Rugby League World Cup last year.

:24:14.:24:16.

Two games were played at thd Derwent Park Stadium in Workington,

:24:17.:24:19.

following an investment of ?450,000 in the ground.

:24:20.:24:21.

The rest was spent in local shops, hotels and other businesses.

:24:22.:24:30.

It got a bit warm on the run yesterday.

:24:31.:24:45.

That combination of the wind and temperatures made it feel w`rmer.

:24:46.:24:53.

This picture has everything, we have the Tyne Bridge, the runners,

:24:54.:24:58.

spectators, the red arrows `nd the sunny weather. Michael caught this

:24:59.:25:07.

shot, a very tight race at the front of the wheelchair race. Further

:25:08.:25:12.

along the road, we had a thtmbs up in the sunshine.

:25:13.:25:18.

The weather is dominated by this high pressure. No pressure loving

:25:19.:25:24.

away over Scandinavia. This will keep us mostly dry. Certainly dry

:25:25.:25:28.

overnight. There will be sole cloud, and some gaps where we could see

:25:29.:25:35.

some mist and fog patches forming. A fairly chilly night, temper`tures

:25:36.:25:40.

will dip into single figures. Cold enough for a touch of grass frost.
