things turning cooler and more blustery. Thank you very much. That | :00:00. | 3:59:59
is all from us. Hello. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Tuesday's Look North Thousands turn out to challdnge | :00:00. | :00:07.
health bosses over the future And on Teesside, a campaign's | :00:08. | :00:11.
underway after managers say they're closing a blood cancer unit because | :00:12. | :00:17.
they can't recruit consultants. Revised plans for a massive | :00:18. | :00:22.
potash mine in a National P`rk. Four`year`old Liam is commended | :00:23. | :00:26.
for saving his school from fire ` Paul Mooney will be here to announce | :00:27. | :00:34.
the winner of our September weather And in sport, what next | :00:35. | :00:40.
for Newcastle United and thdir Defeat at Stoke leaves the Lagpies | :00:41. | :00:44.
sharing bottom spot in the But despite the calls to go, | :00:45. | :00:48.
Pardew isn't about to walk. It leaves me in charge of the team | :00:49. | :01:06.
until I am told I am not. I know there is a lot of pressure on need, | :01:07. | :01:07.
but I need to be strong. It was a public meeting | :01:08. | :01:19.
so huge, a rugby ground Well, | :01:20. | :01:22.
protesters say health services are being secretly transferred from West | :01:23. | :01:28.
Cumbria to Carlisle and thex are demanding all services be rdtained | :01:29. | :01:31.
at the West Cumberland Hosphtal Health bosses, though, | :01:32. | :01:35.
say the new hospital being built in Whitehaven will treat thd vast | :01:36. | :01:38.
majority of patients locallx. Mark McAlindon joins us livd from | :01:39. | :01:41.
outside West Cumberland hospital. Mark, | :01:42. | :01:43.
it was an extraordinary turn out. Indeed. This was a public mdeting, | :01:44. | :01:58.
make no mistake, like no other. This was no community Hall with ` few | :01:59. | :02:03.
diehards passionate about a single interest. This was a rugby ground | :02:04. | :02:06.
with estimates that there m`y have been more than 4000 people `t that | :02:07. | :02:10.
meeting last night. They were expressing concerns and wanting to | :02:11. | :02:14.
hear from health managers what plans are. It shows how fond people are at | :02:15. | :02:18.
this place and the concerns they have in their view for its future. | :02:19. | :02:21.
There can be few better exalples of people power ` 3500 Cumbrians, many | :02:22. | :02:24.
with stories to tell, all ddeply attached to their local hospital. | :02:25. | :02:29.
Never, ever had a bad experhence with the West Cumberland Hospital. | :02:30. | :02:32.
It is a long the trail to C`rlisle and the road is a disgrace. | :02:33. | :02:38.
I had a little grandson born last November by emergency C`section | :02:39. | :02:43.
and we are just worried that these things aren't going to be hdre, | :02:44. | :02:47.
and that babies are going to die. Basically, we need health c`re | :02:48. | :02:51.
I hope this meeting will achieve that they get the message | :02:52. | :02:57.
and understand that we're not going have anything else move frol | :02:58. | :02:59.
West Cumberland Hospital to the east of the county. | :03:00. | :03:02.
And this event was organised by a local woman who says she's | :03:03. | :03:05.
My fears are they are going to drive it down so far, | :03:06. | :03:10.
they are going to say, we h`ve nothing here now, let's close. | :03:11. | :03:13.
What we want as a campaign altogether is to keep the | :03:14. | :03:16.
Copeland MP Jamie Reed drew prolonged applause for | :03:17. | :03:20.
his insistence that consult`nt led maternity services remain, `nd that | :03:21. | :03:25.
The reality is, services are being taken aw`y | :03:26. | :03:32.
by stealth, behind closed doors and it is a process which c`n't be | :03:33. | :03:35.
People have had enough of that and they see it with their own eyes | :03:36. | :03:41.
With the new bill, we have a once`in`a`lifetimd | :03:42. | :03:45.
opportunity to do something really special and significant to | :03:46. | :03:47.
Health bosses did address the crowd and admit services are under review. | :03:48. | :03:53.
But they say the new hospit`l will treat the vast majority of patients. | :03:54. | :03:58.
All the options that we are currently looking at are thdre, | :03:59. | :04:01.
but they all include A behng open, intensive care being open | :04:02. | :04:08.
and we are fully committed to running a maternity service at | :04:09. | :04:12.
The new hospital being built to replace the old facility | :04:13. | :04:18.
in Whitehaven will open to patients from April next year. | :04:19. | :04:26.
I'm enjoying this evening 24 hours on by one of the organisers of the | :04:27. | :04:33.
meeting last night. First of all, were you surprised that the numbers | :04:34. | :04:38.
that showed up? I was. It w`s quite overwhelming. I know said they would | :04:39. | :04:41.
come, but I wasn't expecting as many. There was over 4000. Do you | :04:42. | :04:48.
think the trust got the message that people here feel very deeplx and | :04:49. | :04:53.
concerned about their hospital? They did get the hospital. They know we | :04:54. | :04:58.
are serious and we will not stop until the fight is over. Whx the | :04:59. | :05:03.
concern? The trust said thex are building a new hospital, it will | :05:04. | :05:06.
have all the facilities you have here, people will be treated | :05:07. | :05:10.
locally. Why are you concerned? I feel they are bending the truth | :05:11. | :05:15.
slightly. The statistics thdy are using are based on a big City | :05:16. | :05:20.
Hospital. We are not a big city we are a small town, 40 miles `way from | :05:21. | :05:26.
the biggest hospital. I you commence you can win this battle? Ushng the | :05:27. | :05:31.
people will to campaign? No`mac I'm convinced. We are not going to stop | :05:32. | :05:38.
until the fight is over. Th`t's 4000 will turn into a thousand and we | :05:39. | :05:40.
will keep going until we have to stop. What is next? We are handing | :05:41. | :05:49.
in a petition that has many signatures at Downing Street. | :05:50. | :05:55.
Clearly, this campaign is going to run and run. We will keep you | :05:56. | :05:59.
up`to`date with the developlents. Thank you. | :06:00. | :06:02.
In the east of our region, meanwhile, | :06:03. | :06:04.
the planned closure of a unht treating blood cancer patients has | :06:05. | :06:06.
The North Tees hospital in Stockton says it can't recruit enough | :06:07. | :06:11.
specialists to keep its Haelatology Centre going, but the Trust insists | :06:12. | :06:14.
Campaigners don't accept th`t, and have begun a petition | :06:15. | :06:20.
When you've been fighting ldukaemia for four years, holding | :06:21. | :06:28.
a six`week`old granddaughter is not something you take for granted. | :06:29. | :06:37.
These are tears of happiness. But her emotions are fragile for a | :06:38. | :06:45.
number reason. The hospital unit she credits with keeping her alhve is | :06:46. | :06:50.
earmarked for closure. You don't know whether you're going to live or | :06:51. | :06:54.
die and you have got back in the back of your mind all the thme. | :06:55. | :06:57.
Every day, every night, and even when you go to sleep, you don't know | :06:58. | :07:02.
whether you're going to wakd up in the morning. This is weird June is a | :07:03. | :07:07.
regular inpatient, a unit that could close within weeks. `` this is where | :07:08. | :07:16.
June is a patient. To sustahn the unit, the trust says it needs five | :07:17. | :07:20.
full`time consultants. At the moment, it has three, and two of | :07:21. | :07:24.
those are temporary. There hs a wider story here. It is not just | :07:25. | :07:29.
about finding qualified staff, it is persuading them to work herd. A lot | :07:30. | :07:35.
of our trainees have trained in Newcastle, they have been to medical | :07:36. | :07:38.
school there, have done trahning jobs there and set down roots there | :07:39. | :07:42.
and want to stay in and arotnd there. Are the outcomes for patients | :07:43. | :07:51.
better in Newcastle? Absolutely not. Nevertheless, Junior faces longer | :07:52. | :07:58.
journeys. When you feel as sick as a dog and unwell, and you are fearing | :07:59. | :08:03.
the worst, you can't travel that way because it knocks the life out of | :08:04. | :08:09.
you. The trust insists only around 50 patients a year or in her | :08:10. | :08:17.
situation. But June is counting on an online petition to force a change | :08:18. | :08:23.
of heart. The doctors and ntrses are the best in the country and I want | :08:24. | :08:31.
the people who come after md to get the same care I did. | :08:32. | :08:40.
North East Labour MPs have condemned Conservative plans to freezd | :08:41. | :08:42.
benefits for two years after the next election. | :08:43. | :08:44.
They've criticised it as an attack on the "working poor", | :08:45. | :08:47.
as tens of thousands of people in the region in work will see | :08:48. | :08:50.
But the Conservatives say the plans are fair. | :08:51. | :08:55.
Our political editor Richard Moss is at the Conservative conference | :08:56. | :08:57.
Yes, thank you. George Osborne's speech said he would freeze working | :08:58. | :09:13.
that if he got back into office in 2015, but is not just peopld on the | :09:14. | :09:18.
dole. It would affect tax credits, so three out of four people it would | :09:19. | :09:25.
affect our people. A conservative member is with me now. You `re | :09:26. | :09:29.
accused of picking on the poorest. Element of course it is going down | :09:30. | :09:34.
badly here, they think we should continue spending more and lore | :09:35. | :09:39.
money that we don't have. Wd are pouring more money every ye`r to run | :09:40. | :09:44.
things as they are. We have got to put right the mess later put behind | :09:45. | :09:50.
them. Our economy is growing, on a claimant is falling, so that means | :09:51. | :09:54.
we have to take tough decishons The people paying the price are the | :09:55. | :09:58.
poorest. It is the people trying to make ends meet. We're not cttting | :09:59. | :10:03.
the amount of money. This is about ensuring it doesn't co`op bx so much | :10:04. | :10:10.
that it becomes unaffordabld. Whoever is in Government will make | :10:11. | :10:15.
difficult decisions. You either have to get more money or reduce the | :10:16. | :10:19.
amount that we spend. His is a sensible and reasonable way of | :10:20. | :10:23.
finding those savings it so we can continue to invest in things like | :10:24. | :10:28.
the NHS. The budget of the NHS has gone up every year under thhs | :10:29. | :10:32.
Government. But you need voters to be convinced by that. It also people | :10:33. | :10:36.
on tax credits decide not to vote for you, you are people will be | :10:37. | :10:49.
looking at what they can get. It is about which Government you can trust | :10:50. | :10:55.
to get the economy back on track. What is very clear and what is clear | :10:56. | :11:03.
from this conference, it is serious weapon `` it is a serious conference | :11:04. | :11:08.
with a long`term plan. The Prime Minister has a speech tomorrow, what | :11:09. | :11:13.
can he say? No`mac I want hhm to stay on course. The last Government | :11:14. | :11:17.
left behind a disaster. We have things to do to put that right. That | :11:18. | :11:24.
is what we are here for. Th`t is the view from the Conservative Party | :11:25. | :11:28.
conference here. There will be more discussion about this. Tomorrow | :11:29. | :11:32.
David Cameron's exceed. We will see what he has to say to convince | :11:33. | :11:34.
voters to give him another turn It'll be one | :11:35. | :11:36.
of the most important industrial schemes ever seen in the region if | :11:37. | :11:38.
it gets the go`ahead from planners. Details of a massive new potash mine | :11:39. | :11:41.
in North Yorkshire were sublitted The mine will be based near Sneaton | :11:42. | :11:44.
village, The potash will then be takdn 2 | :11:45. | :11:46.
miles underground to Wilton on Teesside, and then on to | :11:47. | :11:52.
a new harbour at nearby Bran Sands. 1000 jobs would be created, | :11:53. | :11:57.
as well as thousands more Our business correspondent Han Reeve | :11:58. | :11:59.
reports. A field in North Yorkshire that | :12:00. | :12:06.
could become the site After three years of consulting | :12:07. | :12:08.
and persuading, a planning application for the mine was handed | :12:09. | :12:14.
in today, with a reminder of As full production, we will be | :12:15. | :12:28.
employing directly over 1000 people when we are irking. At a local | :12:29. | :12:33.
level, we could boost the economy here by about 10%. It would make a | :12:34. | :12:38.
big contribution into the local economy by paying rates of taxes and | :12:39. | :12:40.
royalties as well. And 18`year`old Josh from Tdesside, | :12:41. | :12:41.
but looking for a job at thd mine, I would want to apply. It would give | :12:42. | :12:53.
me a chance in life. The project is quite cool because there is the fact | :12:54. | :12:57.
that they are making little rocks to fertilize plants. | :12:58. | :12:58.
There's been scant opposition to the mine, even though its hdad will | :12:59. | :13:01.
be sited in North Yorkshire's National Park, probably bec`use | :13:02. | :13:03.
It will expire. They have ghven it a life of 50 years. At the end of | :13:04. | :13:19.
that, you might be left with more unemployment than you had in the | :13:20. | :13:23.
first place. I think it is tp to the present generation to make sure that | :13:24. | :13:27.
there is always beautiful countryside, because people will | :13:28. | :13:31.
always want to visit beautiful countryside and it is our t`sk to | :13:32. | :13:32.
make sure some of it survivds. And National Park Authority | :13:33. | :13:35.
planners say there have to be exceptional circumstances of public | :13:36. | :13:38.
interest to allow such a scheme The company | :13:39. | :13:40.
behind it says using the potash as a fertilizer allows food to bd grown | :13:41. | :13:43.
efficiently and with certainty is There has been industry herd before, | :13:44. | :13:57.
albeit in the 1800s, when thousands of people work here mining hron | :13:58. | :14:05.
stone. It was North Yorkshire's Klondike. | :14:06. | :14:06.
The National Park Authority now has 16 weeks to decide | :14:07. | :14:09.
whether there'll be another mining boom in the county. | :14:10. | :14:16.
Some breaking news now ` and part of North Shields h`s been | :14:17. | :14:19.
sealed off while armed police deal with an incident inside a house | :14:20. | :14:24.
The police say they were called to the house in Howard Street | :14:25. | :14:28.
after reports that a man appeared to be in a distressed state. | :14:29. | :14:31.
There are reports that he's barricaded himself in. | :14:32. | :14:33.
A cordon has been put in pl`ce as a precaution. | :14:34. | :14:36.
There are no further details at the moment, but we'll bring you more | :14:37. | :14:39.
Plenty more to come in tonight's programme: | :14:40. | :14:42.
Why there's a push to persu`de more people to become | :14:43. | :14:45.
And how a cool`headed four`xear`old saved the day at his new school | :14:46. | :14:56.
And as we leave the driest September behind, find out what is up in store | :14:57. | :15:03.
in October and took our winning weather picture. | :15:04. | :15:08.
The number of self`employed people in some parts of the North remains | :15:09. | :15:11.
So now the Prince?s Trust is launching | :15:12. | :15:14.
a campaign to back young people who want to create their own job. | :15:15. | :15:17.
Philip Woodhead from Middlesbrough has used the Trust's support to run | :15:18. | :15:23.
his own successful fashion and bridal wear company. | :15:24. | :15:25.
Buckley is a bespoke evening and bridal wear company. | :15:26. | :15:35.
All outfits here are designdd and made by Philip Woodhead. | :15:36. | :16:18.
a mentor who was an ex`bank manager accountant, so he is fantastic with | :16:19. | :16:22.
are paying a second visit to White Mere Primary in Wardldy. | :16:23. | :17:45.
They're here to visit Liam Lansell, aged four. | :17:46. | :17:48.
He's being held up as a hero after he spotted a small fire in ` kitchen | :17:49. | :17:52.
during his very first week `t school and calmly reported it to staff | :17:53. | :17:57.
I was coming out of there, and I got there, | :17:58. | :17:59.
I think there's a fire, because I can see smoke. | :18:00. | :18:14.
So Liam's a pretty cool customer when faced | :18:15. | :18:16.
with danger, and he's getting some glowing reports from his te`chers. | :18:17. | :18:22.
Liam is a perfect example of exactly how observant we want | :18:23. | :18:24.
our children to be in school, to know how to act at the proper | :18:25. | :18:28.
time and take proper actions to ensure everyone is safe in school. | :18:29. | :18:37.
As well as getting A's for awareness, | :18:38. | :18:38.
Liam's become the youngest person ever to receive a bravery award | :18:39. | :18:41.
Liam's actions not only savdd damage to the school, | :18:42. | :18:47.
but also ensured all your lhves were safe on that afternoon. | :18:48. | :18:50.
What's your favourite thing about today? | :18:51. | :19:01.
So a lesson for everyone from little Liam, our hero of the moment, | :19:02. | :19:09.
That's better than a gold star in your first week, isn't it? Football | :19:10. | :19:28.
news, now. Talk about keeping calm. | :19:29. | :19:30.
Alan Pardew is still manager of Newcastle United, despite owner Mike | :19:31. | :19:32.
Ashley's comments he'd be s`cked if the Magpies lost to Stokd City. | :19:33. | :19:35.
The 1`0 defeat leaves them above bottom club Burnley, | :19:36. | :19:37.
only on goals scored ` and it's their worst start to a | :19:38. | :19:40.
But while some fans continud to call for the manager's head, it seems the | :19:41. | :19:45.
owner is in no mood to give them what they want ` for now at least! | :19:46. | :19:49.
As Alan Pardew walked away from this latest disappointlent all | :19:50. | :19:53.
They say many a true word is spoken in jest, which is what Mike Ashley | :19:54. | :19:59.
claimed his comments were, after apparently telling a reporter | :20:00. | :20:01.
at the weekend that Pardew would be sacked if Newcastle lost to Stoke. | :20:02. | :20:05.
But it was a joke that fell flat and even he seemed to be fed up with | :20:06. | :20:09.
So where does that leave the Newcastle boss? | :20:10. | :20:12.
It leaves me in charge of the team until I am told I'l not. | :20:13. | :20:15.
I know there is obviously a lot of pressure on me and that is probably | :20:16. | :20:19.
Certainly, the players lookdd panicky at times and sadly | :20:20. | :20:29.
for Pardew, his defence wasn't strong enough to cope with the | :20:30. | :20:32.
A 15th minute goal was enough to separate the sides. | :20:33. | :20:39.
Newcastle were fortunate not to concede a penalty when Victor Moses | :20:40. | :20:45.
was brought down in the box and although they had their chances | :20:46. | :20:48.
there was just one shot on target all night. | :20:49. | :20:50.
Daryl Janmaat's efforts supdrbly saved by Asmir Begovic. | :20:51. | :20:52.
But the best chance of all fell to Jack Colback, | :20:53. | :20:54.
who should've equalised but could only smack a shot against | :20:55. | :20:57.
Some thought and some hoped that it might be game over for Parddw, | :20:58. | :21:03.
but the manager is expected to be in charge for the Swansea g`me, the | :21:04. | :21:06.
They are scheduled to hold talks this week. | :21:07. | :21:14.
Probably tomorrow or the next day, because this club needs to win games | :21:15. | :21:17.
Football managers have alwaxs had to be thick skinned, | :21:18. | :21:21.
but it takes a particular strength of character to endure the kind | :21:22. | :21:24.
of personal animosity that Alan Pardew has been subject to | :21:25. | :21:32.
Always in football, there is criticism and mocking of sole | :21:33. | :21:34.
description or whatever, yot've just got to be strong and get on with it. | :21:35. | :21:37.
It is impossible to second`guess Mike Ashley, but he can't h`ve | :21:38. | :21:40.
failed to notice the pressure and protests building from the fans | :21:41. | :21:45.
But as we all know, he doesn't usually take any notice of that | :21:46. | :21:55.
In the Championship, Middlesbrough could climb as high as second, | :21:56. | :21:58.
They're at home to bottom of the table Blackpool, | :21:59. | :22:01.
who've only picked up two points from their opening nine gamds. | :22:02. | :22:04.
By contrast, Aitor Karanka's team are unbeaten in four, with skipper | :22:05. | :22:08.
and top`scorer Grant Leadbitter set to return this evening, | :22:09. | :22:11.
after sitting out Saturday's goalless stalemate at Charlton. | :22:12. | :22:16.
As usual, there'll be full match commdntary | :22:17. | :22:17.
on BBC Tees with Alastair Brownlee, Neil Maddison and Mark Drurx. | :22:18. | :22:20.
And well done to Yorkshire's opening batsman, who won an award from the | :22:21. | :22:43.
Crit pick cotton that writer's club. We have a winner, don't we? | :22:44. | :23:04.
Yes, this is a fantastic pitcher. This is where someone felt puite at | :23:05. | :23:07.
home. My name is Emily and I am a Marine | :23:08. | :23:29.
conservation officer. My job involves inspiring people about the | :23:30. | :23:32.
amazing green life around us, as well as influencing holiday`makers | :23:33. | :23:38.
to secure protection for thd Cumbrian coast. It is a really | :23:39. | :23:43.
special place. We have some amazing marine life. We have living reefs. | :23:44. | :23:55.
There are honey, `like structures. This place provides an amazhng | :23:56. | :24:05.
habitat for lots of creaturds. She got to work looking through your | :24:06. | :24:07.
September selections. One of the runners`up is Emhly | :24:08. | :24:29.
Murdock, who gave this a lovely picture of some sheep at sunrise. | :24:30. | :24:35.
The colours were really nicd and the rays of sunshine and gave it a | :24:36. | :24:39.
lovely warm feel. The other runner`up is Lee Jennings, who took | :24:40. | :24:46.
a picture of a castle at night and I love the magical feel of thd | :24:47. | :24:53.
picture. Has always, there hs only one winner. This picture from | :24:54. | :25:01.
Stephen is fantastic. This really sums up September. Well dond, | :25:02. | :25:07.
Stephen, for a great shot and I m sure the picture will look great in | :25:08. | :25:08.
the calendar. Emily couldn't resist going for a | :25:09. | :25:12.
paddle in that sunshine. We are watching the weather front, | :25:13. | :25:29.
in from the west. It is pushing rain into the western part of our region. | :25:30. | :25:35.
It signals a change for the night. The clouds will increase generally, | :25:36. | :25:41.
and the rain will be patchy. It will pass through the night, perhaps | :25:42. | :25:47.
drier spells through the night. Temperatures will remain in double | :25:48. | :25:52.
figures, with a south westerly breeze bringing it to a high of 14 | :25:53. | :26:00.
Celsius. The next band of cloud and rain comes in from the now West `` | :26:01. | :26:10.
Northwest, burning some patchy rain. `` bringing some patchy rain. That | :26:11. | :26:13.
south`westerly breeze will turn your westerly. Temperatures will not be | :26:14. | :26:23.
as high as today. Tomorrow, 17 is the hide. That is 16 Fahrenheit We | :26:24. | :26:34.
have clearer skies tomorrow, but the tail end of the week will sde a | :26:35. | :26:37.
nether waterfront coming in, and it will bring in some heavier rain | :26:38. | :26:43.
There will be some fresher conditions. At the time you get to | :26:44. | :26:46.
the weekend, it will feel at that more right autumn in September did. | :26:47. | :26:53.
There will be a few gaps in the clouds. There will be some patchy | :26:54. | :26:56.
rain. Dry and bright for most of us on Thursday. Look at a | :26:57. | :27:00.
temperatures, cooler again. Mid`teens at best. By the thme you | :27:01. | :27:05.
get to Friday and Saturday, that weather front will bring in some | :27:06. | :27:08.
rain from the Northwest. Temperatures are not too bad, but it | :27:09. | :27:14.
cools down again as we head into the weekend. As I say, a distinctly on | :27:15. | :27:20.
them feel two things by the weekend. We will keep you up`to`date with the | :27:21. | :27:25.
forecast on your local BBC radio station and on the BBC weather app. | :27:26. | :27:34.
We were good to look at somd headlines, but we don't havd time. | :27:35. | :27:40.
