We did not want to hear that. That is

bring this once famous outdoor pool back to life.

:00:00.:00:07.

Hello and welcome to Monday's Look North.

:00:08.:00:08.

In the headlines tonight: Battling Bradley Lowery

:00:09.:00:10.

could be a record breaker - 200,000 Christmas cards have been

:00:11.:00:14.

And a song for Bradley is storming up the download charts.

:00:15.:00:21.

Could it be the Christmas Number One?

:00:22.:00:23.

Silent Night at York Minster as the unholy ding dong

:00:24.:00:25.

with the ringers means no Christmas bells.

:00:26.:00:30.

And pooling their resources - The community paying to transform

:00:31.:00:35.

In tonight's Team Talk, it's been a winning weekend for most

:00:36.:00:40.

So plenty of Christmas cheer for Boro's elves

:00:41.:00:44.

and Sunderland's Santas - as well as their managers!!

:00:45.:00:58.

Last week he was a star on the pitch when Sunderland took on Chelsea.

:00:59.:01:01.

Last night he was a guest of honour at the BBC's

:01:02.:01:04.

Sports Personality of the Year event.

:01:05.:01:10.

Bradley Lowery is the County Durham youngster with a rare form of cancer

:01:11.:01:13.

who's received lorry-loads of Christmas cards from well-wishers

:01:14.:01:15.

and is on track to receive 200,000 cards and parcels!

:01:16.:01:20.

The five-year-old from Blackhall was diagnosed with neuroblastoma

:01:21.:01:23.

in 2013, and has undergone years of intensive cancer treatment.

:01:24.:01:26.

Bradley Lowery's story has seen an outpouring of affection. The

:01:27.:01:41.

five-year-old with a rare cancer, a guest at last week's Sunderland

:01:42.:01:46.

match and today more evidence of how people have been touched. Tens of

:01:47.:01:50.

thousands of cards and parcels passing through Hartlepool's sorting

:01:51.:01:55.

office. A wave of warmth destined for Bradley -- Bradley. Bradley has

:01:56.:02:04.

200,000 and it has added to the Christmas spirit. It has been really

:02:05.:02:09.

good and he has reached everybody's hard. The atmosphere and the office

:02:10.:02:16.

and everybody here, the staff have been wonderful. Lynn has encouraged

:02:17.:02:24.

this tending -- the sending of cards but is overwhelmed. We didn't expect

:02:25.:02:30.

it to be this big. The response has been fantastic. We have had them

:02:31.:02:34.

from all over the world, from China, Belgium. They have the huge

:02:35.:02:44.

campaign. Australia, USA. On top of the cards, ?850,000 has been raised.

:02:45.:02:50.

Its original aim was to send Bradley to America for treatment. That may

:02:51.:02:55.

yet happen but the New Year will see him start a new course of treatment

:02:56.:02:59.

here in the UK and if his tumour shrinks, he could yet be America

:03:00.:03:03.

bound. For now, it is a Christmas like any other for Bradley. Born up

:03:04.:03:09.

on a compassion that transcends the region. A message willing him to be

:03:10.:03:11.

in festive good health and beyond. And two sisters from Hartlepool

:03:12.:03:19.

are hoping to raise as much money as they can for Bradley this

:03:20.:03:21.

Christmas with a song they've "Our Superhero - A Christmas Wish"

:03:22.:03:24.

is proving to be a big hit for sisters Olivia and Georgia

:03:25.:03:28.

in the download charts. But they'd appreciate a final surge

:03:29.:03:36.

of support to raise even Phil Chapman went to see them

:03:37.:03:39.

at their home studio. Thank you everybody for the cards

:03:40.:03:52.

and presents and money. Merry Christmas. Bolivia and Georgia have

:03:53.:03:59.

written countless songs together in recent years but Bradley's story has

:04:00.:04:03.

inspired them to write an extra special tune released just in time

:04:04.:04:13.

for Christmas. # Christmas Eve, standing next to

:04:14.:04:17.

the fireplace, children playing with the same smile on their face. Week

:04:18.:04:25.

came in and started writing and it all came together in half an hour

:04:26.:04:31.

and it all felt right. It was all about Bradley, super heroes. He

:04:32.:04:35.

inspires us. He is so brave and we thought that was the best subject to

:04:36.:04:41.

make him the superhero. The sisters will be performing best song here at

:04:42.:04:48.

the Middleton Grange shopping centre on Thursday between 12 and one.

:04:49.:04:56.

# DuBois the definition of a superhero. -- you are the

:04:57.:05:03.

definition. We were so excited that it had reached the charts and when

:05:04.:05:06.

it dropped to 14 in the afternoon, we realised it was possible and the

:05:07.:05:11.

girls, they've worked hard and we've all worked hard trying to get it out

:05:12.:05:18.

there. The formation is behind Bradley and we could get him to

:05:19.:05:21.

number one if everybody was to download it.

:05:22.:05:39.

Newcastle University says it will investigate the death

:05:40.:05:40.

of a 20-year-old student who died after drinking too much alcohol.

:05:41.:05:44.

Ed Farmer was in his first term at the university.

:05:45.:05:47.

He passed away in the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Wednesday.

:05:48.:05:50.

Police say he arrived at the hospital in a life-threatening

:05:51.:05:56.

condition after drinking an excessive amount of alcohol.

:05:57.:05:58.

The University says it's saddened by the news and says once

:05:59.:06:01.

the Coroner establishes the facts, it'll take any appropriate action.

:06:02.:06:06.

Four people are being held by police investigating the murder

:06:07.:06:08.

He's been named as 29-year-old Mark Shaw.

:06:09.:06:11.

His body was discovered in a house in Grange Villa

:06:12.:06:15.

near Chester-le-Street on Saturday night.

:06:16.:06:19.

Four people in their late teens and early 20's were arrested

:06:20.:06:24.

in connection with his murder, all of whom knew the victim.

:06:25.:06:27.

The cause of death is as a result of a single stab wound but I can't

:06:28.:06:31.

say that this was a prolonged and vicious attack and that he has

:06:32.:06:34.

It is important that anybody who has any information comes forward

:06:35.:06:40.

so that we can get these people off the streets.

:06:41.:06:43.

It's the last day of consultation on drastic changes to health

:06:44.:06:46.

services in Cumbria and people are still being urged

:06:47.:06:48.

More than 3,000 people have had their say on the controversial

:06:49.:06:52.

proposals which could see a downgrading of services

:06:53.:06:55.

at the West Cumberland Hospital and a change to the running

:06:56.:06:58.

The consultation ends at midnight tonight after months

:06:59.:07:02.

It's been a year of firey meetings, public protests and fear

:07:03.:07:12.

about the future of health care in Cumbria.

:07:13.:07:20.

This has to be everybody's number one priority in fighting those

:07:21.:07:25.

changes because it is going to cost lives.

:07:26.:07:29.

This document is at the centre of the debate.

:07:30.:07:30.

With a focus on making services safer, most of the preferred options

:07:31.:07:32.

would see a downgrading of services at the West Cumberland hospital.

:07:33.:07:35.

Services like childrens and maternity, meaning some mums

:07:36.:07:37.

could have to travel 40 plus miles in labour.

:07:45.:07:55.

babies may die. If they suffer foetal servers -- foetal distress,

they could be brain damaged. with the loss of inpatient beds

:08:14.:08:14.

London. Those in charge say they've listened

:08:15.:08:17.

to the views expressed they insist decisions haven't been

made and the changes discussed Instead we're told this

a referendum, is -- it isn't voting on the favourite and is. There are

:08:36.:08:38.

some underlying problems with the services. The inability to recruit

:08:39.:08:43.

specialist staff. That problem is not going to go away. It is a

:08:44.:08:48.

national problem affecting lots of parts of the country and we have to

:08:49.:08:52.

look at the long-term safety of the services as well as the immediate

opinion of the public. online with postal submissions

BBC Look North, South Shields. The bells at York Minster

:10:51.:10:57.

will remain silent this Christmas, despite last ditch attempts

:10:58.:10:59.

by the church authorities to recruit The 30 bell ringers

:11:00.:11:03.

at the Minster were sacked in October and told they had

:11:04.:11:08.

to re-apply for their jobs over The bells have been heard since

:11:09.:11:26.

1361. In October, the Dean stopped its 30 volunteer workers from

:11:27.:11:31.

working over concerns about safeguarding and vetting procedures.

:11:32.:11:35.

The BBC understands bell-ringing from -- bell-ringers from elsewhere

:11:36.:11:40.

were asked to stand and that finding trained volunteers is not easy. It

:11:41.:11:45.

depends on the willingness of other ringers to come forward when they

:11:46.:11:48.

have their own responsibilities to fulfil at that own churches and how

:11:49.:11:54.

the Minister approaches it and whether they are willing to get some

:11:55.:12:00.

of their own ringers back in as part of the Christmas team. One

:12:01.:12:04.

experienced bell-ringer told look North it is likely anybody would

:12:05.:12:08.

take up what he described as a poisoned chalice and ring at the

:12:09.:12:14.

Minster. They are not commenting about the latest developments in

:12:15.:12:18.

this increasingly bitter dispute and stop a source close to them that

:12:19.:12:22.

they would be prepared to come in and ring the bells if the Minster

:12:23.:12:27.

has a change of heart. Locals and tourists in York expressed

:12:28.:12:31.

disappointment than bells are likely to remain silent on Christmas Day.

:12:32.:12:36.

It will be sad for everybody. A lot of visitors come here and they will

:12:37.:12:40.

be expecting to hear the bells the Christmas. It will be sad if they

:12:41.:12:46.

don't ring any more. It is important. Tradition, nice

:12:47.:12:52.

Christmas. You would like to hear the bells? Yes, it is beautiful.

:12:53.:12:58.

Love to hear them. You always and stop -- you always stop and listen

:12:59.:13:01.

for the bells. Especially at Christmas time.

:13:02.:13:25.

Unless there is a quick resolution to the dispute, it seems the

:13:26.:13:31.

Minster's famous appeal will not be heard over the city for the first

:13:32.:13:36.

time in years this Christmas. Jeff has team talk coming up and

:13:37.:13:45.

pooling their resources, community shareholders plan to revive a

:13:46.:13:50.

seaside outdoor swimming pool. It is looking less like a white Christmas

:13:51.:13:54.

and more like a wet and windy one. I will have the full forecast late in

:13:55.:13:56.

the programme. Now, for 70 years it

:13:57.:14:00.

brought tourists flocking to Tynemouth and was well loved

:14:01.:14:01.

by local people too. Tynemouth's outdoor sea water pool

:14:02.:14:04.

had magnificent views of Longsands Beach,

:14:05.:14:07.

even if the water was But for the last 20

:14:08.:14:09.

years it's been closed. Now though, there are plans

:14:10.:14:18.

for a new pool costing Here's our News

:14:19.:14:20.

Correspondent Mark Denten. From the mid 1920's onwards it often

:14:21.:14:26.

happened at the town's outdoor Up to the early 90's the place

:14:27.:14:36.

was a top local attraction. It looks rather sad today. More I

:14:37.:14:47.

saw them tourist attraction. The Al bought -- outdoor pool has been

:14:48.:14:51.

closed for 20 years. It was hit by more people deciding they wanted to

:14:52.:14:56.

take holidays in places like the Mediterranean rather than in the UK.

:14:57.:15:00.

Could this place be heading for a new start?

:15:01.:15:03.

And could that new start look like this?

:15:04.:15:05.

Campaigners want to bring the pool back 21st century style.

:15:06.:15:10.

It'll be a vibrant space, somewhere where you can look down and think it

:15:11.:15:17.

looks amazing. It'll be somewhere that people will want to visit.

:15:18.:15:20.

A grant application to the coastal communities fund's planned.

:15:21.:15:23.

A community share offer will let people put money in too.

:15:24.:15:25.

Over ?300,000 has already been promised.

:15:26.:15:33.

There is no maximum and minimum limit for investing. You can put

:15:34.:15:40.

whatever you want in. We have had some large pledges and small

:15:41.:15:43.

prejudice. The average amount is around ?400.

:15:44.:15:45.

The plans were welcomed by beach walkers today, some

:15:46.:15:47.

When you went to the beach, you went into the poor rather than you'd pay

:15:48.:16:00.

your couple of pence to get in. Confess now, everybody knows! What

:16:01.:16:04.

are your memories of the pool? Freezing cold.

:16:05.:16:06.

This time we're assured it'll be heated.

:16:07.:16:08.

If all goes to plan the pool could reopen in three years' time.

:16:09.:16:11.

Mark Denten, BBC Look North, Tynemouth.

:16:12.:16:16.

I would love to have the first swim in that. I have said it. Now it is

:16:17.:16:23.

time for a round-up of the sport action.

:16:24.:16:27.

Plenty of festive football cheer at the weekend -

:16:28.:16:30.

one of those rare occasions when most of our teams

:16:31.:16:32.

The fans love Christmas because the games come thick and fast -

:16:33.:16:37.

how is it for the players, Steve?

:16:38.:16:44.

It is part of the job and hectic park of the year.

:16:45.:16:49.

In the Premier League, Sunderland can enjoy Christmas week,

:16:50.:16:51.

And Middlesbrough are up to 14th after a Christmas Karanka

:16:52.:16:54.

They are so much more positive. Good play here from Ramirez. He bides a

:16:55.:17:11.

bit of time and beads and intelligent ball in. Com and

:17:12.:17:18.

components. Superb. He doubled it with a nicely taken penalty. It is

:17:19.:17:24.

important that they make the most of the home games. You mentioned his

:17:25.:17:29.

confidence there. A big plus for Middlesbrough. Back in form. It was

:17:30.:17:37.

the best win of the season. We said they needed to take the shackles off

:17:38.:17:42.

and they look to be doing this. They looked more positive. Wonderful ball

:17:43.:17:47.

here in. Middlesbrough need to keep this going. They have quite an

:17:48.:17:49.

inviting run of fixtures now. I am really happy and doubled my

:17:50.:18:01.

goal is the last few years. I am really happy and more happy that I

:18:02.:18:07.

could contribute to the team win. It has been our biggest one. Some days

:18:08.:18:16.

it is football and we play really well. Sometimes we have lost those

:18:17.:18:22.

other games and today, we were playing in a good way and we won

:18:23.:18:28.

3-0. I am really pleased because we had good game today.

:18:29.:18:33.

So, a big win for Middlesbrough, and an equally important one

:18:34.:18:36.

for Sunderland, at home to Watford - who beat Boro at the Rriverside

:18:37.:18:38.

Plenty of Christmas cheer at the Stadium of Light -

:18:39.:18:42.

skipper Jermain Defoe giving a warm welcome back to defender

:18:43.:18:44.

Younis Kaboul - who mysteriously left the club early in the season.

:18:45.:18:47.

And even a smile from the assistant when he was taken out

:18:48.:18:49.

Not so happy - Watford boss Walter Mazzarri.

:18:50.:18:55.

So important to score. Don't know how he missed that! The left back is

:18:56.:19:12.

turning out to be one of the best attackers. He is unlucky not to

:19:13.:19:21.

score there. What is he doing playing centre forward? He realises

:19:22.:19:28.

Jermain Defoe isn't going to score there. Jordan Pickford starring yet

:19:29.:19:33.

again. Recovers well and makes a good blog. The issue is can

:19:34.:19:42.

Sunderland keep hold of him? Clean sheet, very important.

:19:43.:19:47.

As soon as I scored the goal, we didn't want to get a goal behind. We

:19:48.:20:01.

kept a clean sheet. It was a must win today. Especially over the

:20:02.:20:04.

Christmas period, we have some tough games. The player has done great

:20:05.:20:10.

today. A bit ugly at times. Three points were the big things that we

:20:11.:20:11.

needed. So this is how the table

:20:12.:20:13.

looks - Sunderland off Boro four points

:20:14.:20:14.

above the drop zone. Nearly at the midway point, Steve -

:20:15.:20:17.

what do you think? West Ham and Leicester are in false

:20:18.:20:28.

positions. Sunderland have the big experience to get out of it. Burnley

:20:29.:20:31.

will struggle but have got themselves back in the mix.

:20:32.:20:33.

In the Championship, Newcastle couldn't be doing better

:20:34.:20:35.

than they are at the moment - they're in the number

:20:36.:20:38.

one spot for Christmas, guaranteed by a hard-earned

:20:39.:20:39.

Dwight Gayle getting them off the mark!

:20:40.:20:48.

Rafer Benitez, his first visit. So important to them. He is really

:20:49.:21:00.

positive and some days it doesn't come off. Richie does well and waits

:21:01.:21:08.

for music. Is that an own goal? One for the dubious goals committee,

:21:09.:21:12.

definitely. Burton straight back into wet. Newcastle, mentally and

:21:13.:21:18.

physically, they look very strong. We see an example of this. It is a

:21:19.:21:24.

fine finish. Shaping it ran the goalkeeper. Took a battering in the

:21:25.:21:28.

second half. Showing that resilience. They are a strong side.

:21:29.:21:34.

You mentioned that resilience there that you need. Two games in the

:21:35.:21:39.

week. Didn't play well in both. Two big winds to keep on top of the

:21:40.:21:45.

league. It is looking like a two horse race. Newcastle at the top.

:21:46.:21:52.

Brian, is that to you fancy? Yes, I think they'll go up. If they were to

:21:53.:21:55.

go up, I would be very happy. In League Two, Hartlepool upset

:21:56.:22:01.

the odds - and a few punters, I would imagine -

:22:02.:22:03.

by picking up a point at Portsmouth. Keith Curle will enjoy

:22:04.:22:05.

watching this one again, even if it wasn't Christmas,

:22:06.:22:08.

we'd still call this goal a real cracker

:22:09.:22:11.

from defender Shaun Brisley - It completely deceived the

:22:12.:22:23.

goalkeeper. Time and time again, we see quality delivers from Carlisle.

:22:24.:22:33.

Sitting pretty. Showed resilience because they conceded in the second

:22:34.:22:38.

half. This is how the table locks and they are looking good. Seven

:22:39.:22:43.

points clear. Good opportunity for them. What a great point. Worst

:22:44.:22:54.

defensive record in the league. A long ride herd made better on the

:22:55.:23:00.

back of a clean sheet. Six teams sharing two points between them. To

:23:01.:23:06.

close the comfort. Hopefully they can be steered clear of trouble but
