In tonight's headlines - so it's goodbye from me. | :00:00. | :00:16.
a mother and grandmother died after a botched heart operation. | :00:17. | :00:18.
I couldn't believe that they were just keeping so many things from us | :00:19. | :00:23.
and lying to us and being so deceitful. | :00:24. | :00:25.
A life sentence for a man who murdered his former partner | :00:26. | :00:27.
In sport, tonight - Newcastle United could set a club | :00:28. | :00:51.
record for the number of away wins in a single season. | :00:52. | :00:54.
the Magpies' manager has already picked up a trophy. | :00:55. | :01:04.
Her family said she was the picture of health. | :01:05. | :01:07.
Sheila Hynes was 71 - a mother, grandmother | :01:08. | :01:10.
In 2015, she went into Newcastle's Freeman Hospital | :01:11. | :01:15.
But she died after a valve in her heart was inserted the wrong way. | :01:16. | :01:21.
Her family say her human rights were breached and they're | :01:22. | :01:29.
Our News Correspondent Mark Denten has Sheila's story. | :01:30. | :01:34.
Laughing and joking with her friends. | :01:35. | :01:37.
This is Sheila Hynes, the very picture of health. | :01:38. | :01:40.
She was a lovely woman, wonderful mother, wonderful grandmother. | :01:41. | :01:44.
But Sheila, who was 71, began to feel breathless, she was admitted | :01:45. | :01:56.
to the Freeman Hospital for an operation | :01:57. | :01:57.
A routine procedure, regarded as having just a 6% risk. | :01:58. | :02:05.
The response I got from the nurse when I phoned, | :02:06. | :02:09.
She started to say, "where'd you live?" | :02:10. | :02:16.
And she said, there's been complications in the surgery. | :02:17. | :02:22.
Sheila Hynes had her operation on March 26 2015 | :02:23. | :02:25.
It emerged that during her surgery, a valve in her heart had been | :02:26. | :02:31.
When they checked her, her heart ballooned up on one side. | :02:32. | :02:40.
When they removed the valve, it forced a piece of equipment | :02:41. | :02:44.
The next time her heart ballooned up, it basically | :02:45. | :02:52.
The family say, while Sheila was fighting for her life, | :02:53. | :02:57.
they were treated with gross insensitivity. | :02:58. | :03:10.
We were told, it wasn't our choice to turn my | :03:11. | :03:12.
We said... We were told we had no say in that. | :03:13. | :03:16.
In the same meeting, the secretary who was taking notes | :03:17. | :03:19.
announced that she already had the coroner booked. | :03:20. | :03:21.
This is while your mother is still alive? | :03:22. | :03:23.
We applied to the coroner to have it look that as an Article II ninquest | :03:24. | :03:40.
and what that means is it a human rights consideration that Mrs Hynes | :03:41. | :03:43.
lost her right to life as a result of this. | :03:44. | :03:46.
This tragic event should never have occurred. | :03:47. | :03:49.
Newcastle Hospital Trust has admitted the error | :03:50. | :03:51.
and says its thoughts are with the family. | :03:52. | :03:53.
They say a full independent investigation has taken place. | :03:54. | :03:58.
An inquest into Sheila Hynes' death will take place in June. | :03:59. | :04:02.
Mark Denten, BBC look North, outside the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. | :04:03. | :04:07.
It was "a murder of quite unusual savagery and brutality." | :04:08. | :04:11.
That's how the judge sentencing a man to life in jail described | :04:12. | :04:17.
the attack which led to the death of a mum of two | :04:18. | :04:20.
Miklos Verebes will serve a minimum of 28 years after using used a sharp | :04:21. | :04:26.
stone to stab his former partner Melinda Korosi almost 30 times. | :04:27. | :04:30.
During sentencing the judge also raised concern about the contact | :04:31. | :04:36.
Cumbria Police had with Ms Korosi before her death. | :04:37. | :04:38.
Megan Paterson was in court, Megan this was an horrific attack. | :04:39. | :04:48.
Last September Miklos Verebes broke into the home of Melinda Korosi, | :04:49. | :04:58.
Neighbours called the police when the heard her screaming, | :04:59. | :05:01.
but when officers arrived just four minutes later she was already | :05:02. | :05:04.
dead with Miklos Verebes beside her covered in blood. | :05:05. | :05:06.
At the time he admitted killing her, but later in court tried to claim | :05:07. | :05:09.
In sentencing today the judge said that excuse was 'absurd'. | :05:10. | :05:16.
The police today welcomed the sentence given and also read | :05:17. | :05:18.
a statement from Melinda Korosi's father: | :05:19. | :05:26.
When detectives came to tell me the news, I thought the earth had been | :05:27. | :05:34.
removed from under my feet and everything became empty and | :05:35. | :05:39.
meaningless. I couldn't believe in something this terrible. If I see a | :05:40. | :05:43.
mother walking with their child down a street, I have tears in my eyes. I | :05:44. | :05:45.
have a very deep pain in my heart. Melinda Korosi died in September | :05:46. | :05:51.
but the relationship had been That's right, the couple originally | :05:52. | :05:53.
from Hungary moved to Carlisle in 2012 between then and 2016 | :05:54. | :05:59.
Miklos Verebes raped Just two days before | :06:00. | :06:01.
he murdered her he was released from prison on license | :06:02. | :06:11.
for attacking her in July. The judge described Verebes | :06:12. | :06:17.
as 'a domineering and controlling' who expected 'unquestionable | :06:18. | :06:21.
obedience from his partner' and when that didn't | :06:22. | :06:24.
happen he was violent. There was criticism from the judge | :06:25. | :06:26.
about how the rape allegations Yes, while Verebes was in prison | :06:27. | :06:31.
Melinda Korosi came forward to police and told them she'd been | :06:32. | :06:37.
raped, and just hours after his release in September | :06:38. | :06:40.
he was arrested in relation to those allegations but he wasn't charged | :06:41. | :06:43.
and today in court the judge said he could not 'begin to understand | :06:44. | :06:46.
whey he was released'. That matter is now being | :06:47. | :06:48.
investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission | :06:49. | :06:51.
and we're told Cumbria Constabulary is fully | :06:52. | :06:53.
cooperating with that matter. Detectives are still hunting two men | :06:54. | :07:00.
who abducted a woman and a toddler from a busy street | :07:01. | :07:04.
in broad daylight, before subjecting The attack happened on a popular | :07:05. | :07:09.
seafront in Redcar on Friday lunchtime, prompting | :07:10. | :07:16.
a huge police investigation. Earlier today, officers made | :07:17. | :07:18.
an arrest - but that man's been Our reporter Jim Knight | :07:19. | :07:21.
is at the scene now. As you say, I'm sure the police were | :07:22. | :07:33.
hoping that when they made that arrest today it was going to | :07:34. | :07:37.
actually begin to bring some fruition to the long investigation | :07:38. | :07:41.
they've mounted ever since that violent attack on Friday night. At | :07:42. | :07:46.
lunchtime when they released a statement saying that a local man | :07:47. | :07:52.
had been arrested on suspicion of rape, hopes were raised. That man | :07:53. | :07:57.
was still being questioned. We found out a short time ago that he has | :07:58. | :08:01.
been released without charge so it could be back to square one. To | :08:02. | :08:06.
remind you about the attack. It happened in broad daylight on the | :08:07. | :08:15.
Redcar seafront here. The woman who was with a toddler was dragged, | :08:16. | :08:20.
screaming, into a dark coloured saloon car by two men and driven to | :08:21. | :08:27.
a secluded area in a nearby village. There she was raped and subjected to | :08:28. | :08:34.
a six-hour ordeal. Then the men dumped the woman and the toddler on | :08:35. | :08:42.
the outskirts of Reading. Police say that the toddler was unharmed. You | :08:43. | :08:49.
may have seen the crime reported on TV last night. It's not clear | :08:50. | :08:52.
whether information from the programme last night has led to this | :08:53. | :08:58.
arrest. Because this abduction happened in broad daylight in the | :08:59. | :09:01.
middle of the day, police are hopeful that more people will come | :09:02. | :09:02.
forward. Two people who were jailed | :09:03. | :09:06.
for their part in the murder of a Newcastle man with learning | :09:07. | :09:09.
difficulties have had James Wheatley was jailed for life | :09:10. | :09:11.
in December last year But prosecutors argued | :09:12. | :09:15.
that the sentences handed to Wheatley's girlfriend, | :09:16. | :09:20.
his mother - and another man - This afternoon the Court of Appeal | :09:21. | :09:23.
agreed on two counts. Julie Mills, James Wheatley's | :09:24. | :09:31.
mother, had her sentence for causing or allowing the death of Lee Irving, | :09:32. | :09:34.
increased from 8 years to 10 years and Nicole Lawrence, his girlfriend, | :09:35. | :09:40.
had her sentence increased from Barry Imray's sentence | :09:41. | :09:42.
of three years was unchanged. A short time ago I spoke | :09:43. | :09:49.
to the Solicitor General Robert Buckland and asked him if he felt | :09:50. | :09:52.
the sentences now reflect Well, no sentence can | :09:53. | :09:55.
bring back the life lost but the Court of Appeal, | :09:56. | :10:00.
I think, have considered the cases very carefully and have decided | :10:01. | :10:07.
to increase them because they, like me, view offences like this | :10:08. | :10:10.
with great seriousness and I'm satisfied that as a result of this | :10:11. | :10:15.
hearing today, a higher degree There was an awful lot of local | :10:16. | :10:29.
feeling about this crime. I'm aware that the local Newcastle, | :10:30. | :10:34.
indeed the whole north-east by what happened and I think | :10:35. | :10:44.
it was right that I looked carefully at this case and then decided | :10:45. | :10:48.
to bring it forward to the judges who today have independently decided | :10:49. | :10:51.
that the sentences should go up. A 19 year old man's been charged | :10:52. | :11:01.
with a murder in York. The dead man has been named | :11:02. | :11:05.
as Shaun Skelton who was 53 and lived in Holgate Road | :11:06. | :11:08.
in the city. Daniel Thomas Reed, who's 19 | :11:09. | :11:09.
and of no fixed abode, appeared before the city magistrates | :11:10. | :11:12.
and was remaned in custody Plans to build a school, | :11:13. | :11:14.
a retail park and hundreds of homes on the site of the current | :11:15. | :11:18.
Northumberland County Council Protestors outside County Hall | :11:19. | :11:21.

redeveloping the 37 acres of land, and moving the headquarters | :11:26. | :11:28.

has raised concerns Inspectors say it's "unacceptable" | :11:31. | :11:34.
that most inmates at the city centre jail had to eat their meals | :11:35. | :11:40.
in their cells by an They also found that 60% | :11:41. | :11:43.
of prisoners felt unsafe. The city's MP today raised those | :11:44. | :11:50.
concerns in parliament and said matters were made worse | :11:51. | :11:53.
by a reduction in the Does the Secretary of State agree | :11:54. | :11:55.

to improve prisoner safety now? The honourable lady | :12:08. | :12:10.
is absolutely right about the concerning report about | :12:11. | :12:17.
HMP Durham and we are addressing issues about recruitment in that | :12:18. | :12:21.
prison, along with prisons What we have done is created | :12:22. | :12:23.
2000 new positions at a more senior grade for experienced | :12:24. | :12:28.
officers with mental health training, with other types of | :12:29. | :12:31.
training and those positions will be available in Durham which will help | :12:32. | :12:34.
us retain some of our experienced Few hospitals in England have been | :12:35. | :12:37.
plagued with as many troubles as the West Cumberland Hospital | :12:38. | :12:50.
in Whitehaven. And after months of protest, worry | :12:51. | :12:52.
and consultation, tomorrow is D-Day. Health bosses are to | :12:53. | :12:55.
announce radical proposals They include the possibility | :12:56. | :12:56.
of moving consultant-led maternity care to Carlisle, | :12:57. | :12:59.
along with urgent children's care, It was the first hospital | :13:00. | :13:01.
built in England But the West Cumberland Hospital | :13:02. | :13:10.
in Whitehaven, has been plagued with problems for decades, | :13:11. | :13:18.
Initially major financial woes, and then increasing | :13:19. | :13:19.
problems around recruitment After a report revealing | :13:20. | :13:28.
worryingly high high death rates in 2013 saw North | :13:29. | :13:31.
Cumbria University Hospitals Trust - Infirmary in Carlisle put | :13:32. | :13:34.
into special measures. Inspection teams went into hospitals | :13:35. | :13:43.
with worrying death rates... That same year, | :13:44. | :13:48.
patients suffering trauma, needing emergency or complex high | :13:49. | :13:50.
risk surgery, alongwith cardiac care would be transferred | :13:51. | :13:53.
from Whitehaven to Carlisle's In 2014 thousands protested | :13:54. | :13:55.
against losing services, and over fears the hospital | :13:56. | :14:03.
could more - including We want to keep the services we have | :14:04. | :14:05.
here. In 2105, | :14:06. | :14:18.
the Care Quality Commission announced the trust would have | :14:19. | :14:20.
to remain in special measures. A specialist government team, | :14:21. | :14:26.
the Success Regime was brought Well, controversially it | :14:27. | :14:32.
includes changes to: maternity services - | :14:33. | :14:41.
and the possibility of moving Consultant-led maternity | :14:42. | :14:43.
From Whitehaven to Carlisle Potentially also moving emergency | :14:44. | :14:47.
children's care across to Carlisle And possibly centralising | :14:48. | :14:54.
stroke care at Carlisle The decision on what happens will be | :14:55. | :15:15.
announced tomorrow. The decision will be made tomorrow by health | :15:16. | :15:21.
bosses and that is rubber-stamped by the council, we understand, on the | :15:22. | :15:27.
27th March. They'll so have the option of referring it back to the | :15:28. | :15:31.
government. It was a big issue in the Copeland by-election. Didn't all | :15:32. | :15:38.
the candidates promised to fight to maintain services? It was really | :15:39. | :15:43.
essential. As you said, all the candidates made a commitment to | :15:44. | :15:46.
fight for services, to fight for accident and emergency, consultant | :15:47. | :15:53.
led maternity, when we talk about consultant led maternity, we're | :15:54. | :15:57.
talking about a senior doctor on hand should there be convocations | :15:58. | :16:03.
during delivery. The Conservative's winning Caribbean -- candidate won | :16:04. | :16:10.
support from Theresa May when she promised a review of recruitment | :16:11. | :16:17.
before decisions were made. She spoke to Sunday politics before the | :16:18. | :16:22.
by-election. I've been speaking with the health minister and we have | :16:23. | :16:26.
agreed in writing that there will be a professionally, government backed | :16:27. | :16:34.
review, before any decision is made. Trudy Harrison has now told the BBC | :16:35. | :16:42.
that she made a promise for a review before any decision was made but | :16:43. | :16:46.
she's been told that the community don't want a halt to the process and | :16:47. | :16:52.
now she is saying that she will have a review of the situation after the | :16:53. | :16:58.
decision has been implemented. She will look at retention of staff as | :16:59. | :17:02.
well. There are no details about that review. This time tomorrow, we | :17:03. | :17:06.
will have the decision. Thank you. A new 19 million pound | :17:07. | :17:10.
hospital will, it's claimed, be the first phase of a major health | :17:11. | :17:12.
village planned for Teesside. It's being built at Acklam Hall | :17:13. | :17:15.
in Middlesbrough, and will be run by a private health company | :17:16. | :17:18.
which is expanding Taking shape, a new ?19 million | :17:19. | :17:31.
hospital. This is what it will look like. It will have 90 beds, three | :17:32. | :17:38.
operating theatres and will treat private and NHS patients. Over the | :17:39. | :17:44.
past ten years, we've led up to delivering health care to about | :17:45. | :17:50.
27,000 patients per year, outpatients and day case procedures. | :17:51. | :17:55.
In the new facility, will be increasing that by another 30%. | :17:56. | :18:01.
Middlesbrough Council had been criticised for selling off the land | :18:02. | :18:05.
and above all too cheaply but the owners say they have spent ?4 | :18:06. | :18:10.
million repairing the grade one listed building and has invested | :18:11. | :18:15.
heavily in the building which will create new jobs. It's a massive new | :18:16. | :18:23.
scheme. It's pretty daunting and significant. We've always planned to | :18:24. | :18:29.
have a health village of some sort. This is the first stage of this. The | :18:30. | :18:34.
hospital is expected to be completed and opened by the end of this year. | :18:35. | :18:49.
Fifty years ago this week, the North Yorkshire city of Ripon | :18:50. | :18:52.
lost what many regarded as a vital service. | :18:53. | :18:54.
Its railway closed, leaving it the only city in Yorkshire | :18:55. | :18:56.
to have no direct link to Britain's rail network. | :18:57. | :18:59.
It's a loss which campaigners continue to challenge and still hope | :19:00. | :19:02.
It's an historic city where many still mourn the loss | :19:03. | :19:09.
Until 1967, the people of Ripon had this. | :19:10. | :19:14.
It's exactly 50 years since trains were last seen in Ripon | :19:15. | :19:23.
and for 30 of those years, the present mayor has been | :19:24. | :19:26.
A rail link really would make all the difference. | :19:27. | :19:33.
Over a million visitors come to Ripon annually, | :19:34. | :19:35.
And we know that 200,000 people a year would come to Ripon by rail. | :19:36. | :19:41.
All the proposals are directed towards making the railways do those | :19:42. | :19:43.
Richard Beeching's controversial recommendations in the 1960s that | :19:44. | :19:50.
With the line to Ripon one of many closed on his advice. | :19:51. | :20:00.
Today, the rail lines to Ripon have gone and the station here has been | :20:01. | :20:03.
After 50 years without trains, though, would the residents of Ripon | :20:04. | :20:13.
Yes. It would be ideal to have it back. | :20:14. | :20:21.
I personally think the money could be spent more wisely in other areas. | :20:22. | :20:24.
We've got a good bus service but it would be nice to have the option | :20:25. | :20:28.
A new feasibility study into reopening the line to Ripon has | :20:29. | :20:32.
With the quoting journey times between Ripon and leads of 36 | :20:33. | :20:43.
It claims demand for the service would be high. | :20:44. | :20:48.
When the line closed, the population of Ripon was 8000. | :20:49. | :20:50.
By 2025, the population of Ripon will be 20 5000. | :20:51. | :20:53.
And 65% of those, we know, will commute out of Ripon each day. | :20:54. | :20:56.
The latest feasibility study will be conflict by September | :20:57. | :21:06.
with campaigners confident this bygone era can be | :21:07. | :21:10.
My mum and dad lived in Ripon at the time. I bet they missed the train | :21:11. | :21:23.
link. Great old pictures. Now the sport. | :21:24. | :21:25.
It's almost a year since Rafa Benitez first arrived on Tyneside, | :21:26. | :21:28.
taking Steve McClaren's place as manager of Newcastle United. | :21:29. | :21:30.
The Spaniard couldn't prevent the Magpies from dropping out | :21:31. | :21:33.
But he looks almost certain to take them straight back up, | :21:34. | :21:36.
And - ahead of tonight's trip to Reading - he's already | :21:37. | :21:40.
collected his first trophy of the season. | :21:41. | :21:42.
He couldn't be at last night's black tie dinner | :21:43. | :21:48.
at Newcastle Civic Centre - the small matter of another | :21:49. | :21:51.
And, if all goes well, another step on the road to promotion. | :21:52. | :21:55.
So the Sport Newcastle organisation arranged their own | :21:56. | :21:59.
pre-match presentation, naming Rafa Benitez their | :22:00. | :22:01.
It gives me tremendous honour to give you this because you have | :22:02. | :22:12.
brought back pride to the club, to the city, and the area and we | :22:13. | :22:17.
appreciate it so much because it's been a rough time. I know you're | :22:18. | :22:24.
going to succeed. Thank you very much. It's a great honour for me to | :22:25. | :22:29.
receive this award. On behalf of myself and my staff, the players, | :22:30. | :22:35.
everyone. When the manager receives this kind of award it means that a | :22:36. | :22:41.
lot of people have been helping him to achieve. | :22:42. | :22:44.
The rest of the Championship has spent much of the season | :22:45. | :22:47.
With an 11-point cushion between the leaders and third-placed | :22:48. | :22:50.
Huddersfield, who they beat at the weekend, it's hard | :22:51. | :22:52.
But Benitez is taking nothing for granted. | :22:53. | :22:59.
In one week, everything changed for us. In one week, it can change. We | :23:00. | :23:08.
have to be sure that every single player, every single member of the | :23:09. | :23:11.
staff and every single fan has the same feeling that nothing is won or | :23:12. | :23:16.
done and we have to carry on. The odds are, though, | :23:17. | :23:19.
this won't be the last trophy the Newcastle boss will be | :23:20. | :23:22.
holding this season. And there'll be radio commentary, | :23:23. | :23:24.
as ever, on BBC Newcastle, with the match kicking off | :23:25. | :23:27.
at eight o'clock. Elsewhere this evening, | :23:28. | :23:29.
in Scottish League Two, Berwick Rangers could close the gap | :23:30. | :23:33.
on sixth-placed Stirling Albion if The Cumbernauld side are just | :23:34. | :23:36.
one point and one place below them. Staying with football, | :23:37. | :23:40.
England's women could win A line-up peppered with | :23:41. | :23:42.
North East players stunned World Champions USA on Saturday - | :23:43. | :23:47.
with a late winner, set up Her shot ricocheted off | :23:48. | :23:50.
the bar, before being put England - captained | :23:51. | :23:55.
by Wearside's Steph Houghton - have to beat Germany in Washington | :23:56. | :24:01.
DC tonight, and hope the USA and France draw their game - | :24:02. | :24:04.
which takes place three hours later. Winning the invitational tournament | :24:05. | :24:07.
would be the perfect preparation They are obviously ranked | :24:08. | :24:09.
number one, the world champions, So it's a big result for us | :24:10. | :24:24.
and our lot of confidence going into the Euros this year | :24:25. | :24:29.
and going to compete We love playing against | :24:30. | :24:31.
the Germans and, hopefully, we can get a win there and see | :24:32. | :24:41.
how the second result pans out. We want to beat them | :24:42. | :24:44.
and it puts us in a really good position | :24:45. | :24:46.
to win the tournament. You can follow the match online and | :24:47. | :24:59.
on the BBC the bottom. -- on the red button. Doesn't that she believes | :25:00. | :25:04.
cup sound nice. Some blue skies on the north-east | :25:05. | :25:24.
coast there. Also, in York. The daffodils just about coming into | :25:25. | :25:29.
bloom. Tomorrow looks like a decent day, bright and breezy for most of | :25:30. | :25:33.
us. But there's some weather to in between. Rain spreading in from the | :25:34. | :25:39.
West as we had through the night. That rain does spread through the | :25:40. | :25:46.
region. A little bit of snow on the tops of the hills. By morning, many | :25:47. | :25:51.
places try again. Temperatures dipped down to four or five Celsius. | :25:52. | :25:56.
The winds turning more westerly by the end of the night. Tomorrow | :25:57. | :26:06.
morning, a fine dry day. 20 of blue sky and sunshine. A bit warmer than | :26:07. | :26:11.
it's been. Temperatures in many places into double figures. | :26:12. | :26:20.
Somewhere like Redcar 12 Celsius. It will be quite brisk and gusty in the | :26:21. | :26:28.
east. Tomorrow, low pressure up to the north. Keeping relatively clear | :26:29. | :26:32.
of the weather fronts for the next couple of days at least. Come the | :26:33. | :26:36.
tail end, this weather system comes in. The cold front follows an | :26:37. | :26:44.
Saturday bringing more rain with it. Breezy as we head into the weekend. | :26:45. | :26:50.
Wednesday and Thursday not a lot to choose between them. Dry days, | :26:51. | :26:57.
bright days. Some showers on Wednesday night. Daylight hours are | :26:58. | :27:00.
essentially set fair. Into the weekend, a lot more cloud around. | :27:01. | :27:05.
Friday and Saturday likely to see some rain. Patchy rain moving | :27:06. | :27:14.
further east. Maybe a bit cooler. 11 Celsius at best. We'll keep you | :27:15. | :27:22.
up-to-date on your local radio station and on the BBC weather app. | :27:23. | :27:27.
Very soon, a full update on the winner of the February weather | :27:28. | :27:28.
picture competition. More rain to come. That's a bit | :27:29. | :27:41.
worrying. The ground is absolutely sodden. At least it'll be through | :27:42. | :27:45.
the night, though. That said from ours. | :27:46. | :27:46. |
