Thousands of workers are secure in their jobs tonight,

with the announcement from Nissan that it's to invest

The carbuilder is to keep production of its Qashqai model

on Wearside and bring anothdr model, the X-trail SUV,

It comes after the company warned that the Brexit vote might

jeopardise future investment at the Sunderland plant.

It's very difficult to make decisions in terms of investments

or envision the future if you don't know how the relationship

is going to be between the TK and the main partner,

the main trade partner of the UK, which is the rest of Europe.

Gerry Jackson joins us live from Nissan's Sunderland plant.

In fact, Gerry, workers leaving the plant today smiling.

A lot of politicians were sliling as well, because less than two weeks

ago, the MP was in Downing Street demanding promises of compensation

if Nissan were to be hit by extra trade tariffs by the EU post Brexit.

Around 80% of cars go for export mainly to Europe. So relief all

round today when the 7000 workers here and 40,000 in the supply chain

were told their jobs could be secured for years to come.

We've seen the shift changes and the mood changes at Nissan

I've been here 25 year and I hope it's going to be

Great news for myself personally and for the region as a whole.

It brings job security again, plan for the future,

because if Nissan went down, that would be it, the North East

This is the five-seater Qashqai that we're so familiar with,

one of the first successful crossover vehicles in the UK.

But it will be the updated version of this, the X-trail that whll also

Seven seats aimed squarely `t active families, and they're hoping to sell

Today's news came amid intense speculation about the futurd

Less than a fortnight ago, Nissan had been locked in t`lks

It had demanded compensation for any punitive tariffs imposed

So what was offered by the Government?

The Nissan man was choosing his words carefully.

We are in a constant dialogte with the Government, as we have been

We've been here a long time, the Government made support

and assurances to Nissan to bring us here, and we've faced a lot

of adversity between the Government and Nissan.

This is just another one of those adversities in the process of making

But in terms of something that can satisfy you in terms of hard cash?

Because tariffs would have been hard cash.

Nissan's not interested in hard cash as a solution to a problem.

Today's announcement potenthally assures carmaking here

until the mid-2020s, well after Brexit.

But there was one note of caution from the local MP.

Those conversations obviously need to continue with the rest

of the car industry, with the rest of the manufacturing

sector across the North East and the whole of the UK.

But health officials in the North say not enough women are taking

up their invitations for routine mammograms.

Newcastle Hospitals Trust says only 77% of women

who are given appointments are actually attending them.

It's a similar picture across our region.

Steph Cleasby's been talking to two cancer survivors who say thdre's

Tina and Elaine are breast cancer survivors.

Elaine was diagnosed with aggressive stage-three breast cancer

after a routine mammogram, having had no symptoms.

My mum, two sisters and a cousin have all had breast cancer

When I was 53, my first mammogram had no lumps,

bumps, nothing, discharge, absolutely nothing,

That was on February 14th and I was in hospital March 9th

Newcastle's NHS Trust, which also manages the scredning

for North Cumbria, says onlx 77 of women who are given appohntments

It's a similar picture across the region.

South Tyneside is 73%, and Sunderland is 75%.

They're above the minimum standard of 70%, but doctors say these

figures need to be much higher, around 80-85%.

You may not have found a lulp, you may not have noticed anx changes

We are trying to pick up cancers that you haven't found yet.

Breast cancers picked up tend to do better, women live longer, treatment

tends to be less aggressive, and more than 90% of women `re alive

Now cancer-free, Tina nine xears clear, and Elaine five years,

the ladies are featuring in a new NHS campaign

to get more women to go for life-saving breast scredning.

Life's just wonderful for me now, yeah.

Had I not gone for my mammogram I wouldn't have seen four of them.

So definitely, definitely, please go for mammograms.
