?9 million is to be spent on improving security | :00:12. | :00:15.
at a Stockton Prison to try to stop any drugs getting in. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Body scanners, extra staff and improved security | :00:19. | :00:21.
are being installed at Holme House Prison. | :00:22. | :00:24.
Many jails have a serious problem with drugs being smuggled in, | :00:25. | :00:27.
including those formerly known as legal highs. | :00:28. | :00:30.
Extra money will also be spent treating inmates | :00:31. | :00:32.
with addictions, as Lee Johnson reports. | :00:33. | :00:37.
Drugs have always been rife inside our prisons. | :00:38. | :00:40.
These CCTV pictures show visitors bringing them to inmates. | :00:41. | :00:43.
In recent years, new psychoactive substances, formerly | :00:44. | :00:47.
known as legal highs, have become more popular | :00:48. | :00:49.
I've seen a lot of people flopping about, in the three years. | :00:50. | :00:55.
It happens on a day-to-day basis sometimes. | :00:56. | :01:01.
Jails have been here a lot of years, and they've never stopped | :01:02. | :01:04.
them in all them years, so how are they going to do it now? | :01:05. | :01:07.
Staff at Holme House have described one drug, Spice - | :01:08. | :01:10.
a synthetic cannabis - as the biggest threat | :01:11. | :01:12.
It's a massive problem, and it's dangerous, | :01:13. | :01:15.
because people under the influence of it are unpredictable. | :01:16. | :01:19.
They seem to get superhuman strength as well. | :01:20. | :01:22.
There's been a number of times staff of had to go off duty | :01:23. | :01:25.
because they've inhaled the toxins that Spice has given off. | :01:26. | :01:30.
The most common way drugs get into our prisons | :01:31. | :01:32.
is through prisoners or visitors smuggling them in. | :01:33. | :01:35.
Anyone coming here to Holme House has to go through a security system. | :01:36. | :01:39.
But the prison's been given millions of pounds to invest in new, | :01:40. | :01:42.
full-body scanners and other security measures to try and crack | :01:43. | :01:45.
It's in the hope of making Holme House completely drug free. | :01:46. | :01:51.
Earlier this year, the Government handed some prison governors | :01:52. | :01:54.
Holme House is among the first in the scheme. | :01:55. | :01:58.
The man running the jail has extra resources to try | :01:59. | :02:01.
Over the course of three years, it'll be approaching | :02:02. | :02:05.
That's going to be significant in terms of doing the best | :02:06. | :02:09.
that we can to prevent drugs coming into the prison and help them get | :02:10. | :02:13.
off drugs and lead drug-free lives when they leave prison. | :02:14. | :02:16.
Do you think it's possible to make Holme House 100% drug-free? | :02:17. | :02:19.
We're going to talk about people leading drug-free lives, | :02:20. | :02:21.
and we're going to do whatever we possibly can to make | :02:22. | :02:24.
that possible while they're in the prison. | :02:25. | :02:26.
And we're going to do whatever we can tosupport them | :02:27. | :02:28.
when they get out of prison at the end. | :02:29. | :02:32.
We're going to make sure we use that public money as smartly and wisely | :02:33. | :02:35.
The POA has welcomed this news, this extra funding means there'll be | :02:36. | :02:40.
an extra 50 members of staff coming to work here at Holme House | :02:41. | :02:43.
They'll be a mixture of officers and drug workers. | :02:44. | :02:47.
There's going to be an emphasis on drug treatment here, | :02:48. | :02:49.
for prisoners both inside and outside the jail. | :02:50. | :02:51.
The POA says that's positive step, and says in the last three years | :02:52. | :02:55.
it's lost a third of its workforce here, | :02:56. | :02:57.
so any extra members of staff coming into the system, | :02:58. | :02:59.
at a time when there's unrest in prisons across the country, | :03:00. | :03:02.
Meanwhile, management say the new security should | :03:03. | :03:06.
be here and in place by spring next year. | :03:07. | :03:08.

Quiet at times, apart from his music, but used to tell him | :04:15. | :04:22.
about it and he was very apologetic and everything. | :04:23. | :04:26.
As you can see, the investigation is still ongoing. | :04:27. | :04:33.
The specialist search team are out here looking for evidence. | :04:34. | :04:37.
There has been a huge amount of activity at the other end | :04:38. | :04:40.
A search was happening on this land next to a golf course. | :04:41. | :04:44.
Members of the public weren't allowed in. | :04:45. | :04:46.

from hospital in time for the festivities. | :07:28. | :07:29.

he arrested, and the life just drained from his body. | :08:10. | :08:12.

What's it like having him back for Christmas for you? | :09:17. | :09:18.
Is well now, a few days ago, we were still wondering about a white | :09:19. | :09:36.
Christmas, now we're wandering about storms? | :09:37. | :09:43.
Yes, the jet stream is driving Atlantic flows into our area. Some | :09:44. | :09:48.
rain around just now, some heavy outbreaks of rain, briefly clearing | :09:49. | :09:52.
through early hours of the morning. The winds ease, temperatures cold | :09:53. | :09:56.
enough for a touch of ground frost at the tail end of the night. A dry, | :09:57. | :10:02.
chilly started tomorrow, not for too long, a band of rain coming in from | :10:03. | :10:08.
the less. Heavy at times, still missing through, many places drier | :10:09. | :10:11.
by the afternoon. Temperatures peaking around eight Celsius. The | :10:12. | :10:16.
wind brisk at times tomorrow. Keeping an eye on the pressure | :10:17. | :10:20.
charts, lots of isobars, staying fairly windy throughout the week. | :10:21. | :10:24.
You're looking up at this next deep Atlantic alone. The second named | :10:25. | :10:29.
storm of the season, Storm Barbra set to bring wet and windy weather | :10:30. | :10:37.
into Friday and Christmas Eve. Thursday a windy day, many eastern | :10:38. | :10:42.
areas fairly dry and bright. Temperatures up to 8 degrees. | :10:43. | :10:45.
Blustery in many areas. By Friday, the winds get their act together, | :10:46. | :10:52.
dusting of 60mph in places. Heavy rain for a time, passing through | :10:53. | :10:57.
very quickly. There is a yellow warning from the Met Office, we'll | :10:58. | :11:00.
keep you updated on your making a journey elsewhere in the | :11:01. | :11:03.
country it's worth knowing the national forecast. Over now to | :11:04. | :11:10.
Tomasz. So, the weather's going to blow a | :11:11. | :11:14.
few cobwebs away in the coming days and maybe a few other things, as | :11:15. | :11:19.
well. How stormy is it going to get? For most of us probably not too | :11:20. | :11:23.
terrible. It is, however, going to be very nasty across parts of | :11:24. | :11:30.
Scotland on Friday. The clouds are racing across the Atlantic and we | :11:31. | :11:36.
will see a storm by the time we get to around about Friday and then | :11:37. | :11:38.
Friday night. At the moment we have a weather | :11:39. | :11:41.
front crossing the country, we have had dreadful weather in the | :11:42. | :11:44.
north-west, it was cold and raining in Northern Ireland and western | :11:45. | :11:47.
Scotland. This band of rain will be somewhere here by the end of the | :11:48. | :11:53.
night. Behind it a shot of cooler air, colder air and frequent | :11:54. | :11:57.
showers. This is what Wednesday looks like. Lots of showers around | :11:58. | :12:00.
across northern parts of the country, some of | :12:01. | :12:02. |
