He killed a man with one punch: Protest outside court as a man is | :00:12. | :00:17.
jailed for 16 years for murder. I will be live at the Leeds Festival | :00:17. | :00:22.
chatting with some of the thousands of music fans arriving for one of | :00:22. | :00:27.
the biggest events of the summer. And a festival of a different kind: | :00:27. | :00:31.
The church that has flowers everywhere. | :00:31. | :00:36.
This was the view over the fine weather over Bradford today. I will | :00:36. | :00:46.
:00:46. | :00:52. | ||
be back with tomorrow's forecast A 20 year-old Sheffield man is | :00:52. | :00:56.
being sent to jail for at least 16 years after killing a father of two | :00:56. | :01:01.
outside a city centre marked -- nightclub with one punch. Bradley | :01:01. | :01:06.
Hinkler, a boxer, claimed he was acting in self defence. His victim | :01:06. | :01:09.
Thomas Gower died in hospital for eight days later. Hinkler's family | :01:09. | :01:12.
have mounted a campaign against the conviction, saying the charge | :01:12. | :01:18.
should have been one of manslaughter, not murder. | :01:18. | :01:22.
Supporters of Bradley Hinkler were out in force at Sheffield Crown | :01:22. | :01:29.
Court this morning as they had been at a demonstration last week. | :01:29. | :01:34.
But that didn't stop Hinkler receiving a 16 year sentence. The | :01:34. | :01:37.
high feelings surrounding this murder case about to this: | :01:37. | :01:41.
Supporters of the killer Bradley Hinkler say he was merely acting in | :01:41. | :01:45.
self- defence in the fight outside his nightclub last December. Police | :01:46. | :01:51.
say Hinkler, a trained boxer, had hit two other men if before he hit | :01:51. | :01:58.
and fatally punched Thomas Gower. The media is misleading but it is a | :01:58. | :02:05.
fight with people sat out there. People know the truth and haven't | :02:05. | :02:13.
come forward. If they do, the appeal will going anyway. Thomas | :02:13. | :02:23.
:02:23. | :02:32. | ||
Gower's parents said in a If you are trained boxer and you | :02:32. | :02:39.
are hitting people, the jury in this case decided he had that | :02:39. | :02:42.
intent so he is entitled to be convicted of murder. The lesson we | :02:42. | :02:48.
have to learn from this is that young men who are skilled in combat | :02:48. | :02:52.
sports need to keep those skills inside the gym and not practise | :02:52. | :02:59.
them on the streets. Or else, tragedies like this occur. Bradley | :02:59. | :03:02.
Hinkler's support has dwindled away after hearing of his life sentence. | :03:02. | :03:07.
The judge's message was clear. Thomas Gower's killing could not be | :03:07. | :03:17.
:03:17. | :03:19. | ||
John joins us now live. Will Hinkler's family take this any | :03:19. | :03:24.
further? They say they will appeal, but then again most people do when | :03:24. | :03:28.
there is a conviction they feel is wrong. They can only appeal on the | :03:29. | :03:33.
grounds of the conviction if they can get appreciable new evidence. | :03:33. | :03:37.
Police say there were a number of eyewitnesses who never came forward | :03:37. | :03:42.
to give their opinion on what had happened. As regards sentencing, | :03:42. | :03:47.
they may feel it was manifestly unfair. Judges have a strict | :03:47. | :03:53.
sliding scale of sentencing for murder, and in this case, assault | :03:53. | :04:00.
was 13 years and grievous bodily harm added, half that and you get | :04:00. | :04:05.
to 16 year sentence. You reported recently on the case of Ray Eden | :04:05. | :04:08.
who died after trying to stop a fight in Doncaster. He too was also | :04:08. | :04:13.
punched once, smashing his head on the ground and died three days | :04:13. | :04:17.
later. His attacker, Luke Jolly, another boxer, was sentenced to | :04:17. | :04:20.
four years nine months for manslaughter. What other | :04:20. | :04:25.
differences between that case and that of Hinckley? -- are the | :04:25. | :04:30.
differences. The main one is that Jolly was prepared to plead guilty | :04:30. | :04:34.
of manslaughter to spare the Eden family a trial. It was agreed by | :04:34. | :04:38.
the CPS, the victim's family and the police that that would be a | :04:38. | :04:42.
case. That really was a single punch. In this case, Bradley | :04:42. | :04:46.
Hinkler would not admit to anything and put the victim's family through | :04:46. | :04:51.
the trauma of a trial and would admit nothing. Because of that and | :04:51. | :04:55.
the seriousness of the sentence he eventually got, that was the huge | :04:55. | :04:59.
difference. In one case, the man admitted manslaughter and another | :04:59. | :05:04.
he denied murder but was convicted of it. That is a very different | :05:04. | :05:12.
Thank you. Later on look north: The sun, it says, shines on the | :05:12. | :05:15.
righteous. Why Bradford has become the first cathedral in the country | :05:16. | :05:23.
to have solar panels on its roof. It is arguably Yorkshire's biggest | :05:23. | :05:28.
gathering of people, up to 75,000 music-lovers will gather at Bramham | :05:28. | :05:31.
Park every day for the annual Leeds Festival. | :05:31. | :05:35.
Fans from all over the world will come to York should watch bands | :05:35. | :05:40.
such as Pulp, Elbow and The Strokes over the next three days. The night | :05:40. | :05:44.
before the event, thousands have arrived and the air is thick with | :05:44. | :05:52.
anticipation, I am told. Is that so, Amy? It is. There are many people | :05:52. | :05:56.
here. This is the calm before the storm. We have beautiful whether | :05:56. | :06:00.
this evening. You can see clearly behind me through the trees we have | :06:00. | :06:04.
one of the camp sites, one of many. Thankfully the bad weather we had | :06:04. | :06:08.
earlier today certainly hasn't put any festival fans off. In fact | :06:08. | :06:11.
thousands of them have been arriving in droves since yesterday | :06:11. | :06:16.
morning. Earlier I went behind the scenes to find out what happens | :06:16. | :06:26.
:06:26. | :06:34. | ||
The music starts in 18 hours and on the main stage there are almost | :06:34. | :06:38.
ready to rock. Some of the artists are already there, and you wouldn't | :06:38. | :06:42.
believe the size of these. Bus doesn't quite do it. This is | :06:42. | :06:46.
something you don't often get to see, beautiful green grass that in | :06:46. | :06:51.
less than 24 hours will be swarming with tens of thousands of fans, and | :06:51. | :06:55.
this crash barrier is used to control them. Thousands of people | :06:55. | :06:59.
have been arriving since yesterday, and they are ready to party. It is | :06:59. | :07:07.
time to let your hair down, like a holiday. It is fun! We are having | :07:08. | :07:15.
the best time we can possibly have. The toilets are usually a stinky | :07:15. | :07:25.
:07:25. | :07:42. | ||
area you cannot wait to get away It is a young Festival. A dynamic | :07:42. | :07:47.
kraut and we make good money. was recommended to us as one of the | :07:47. | :07:54.
biggest and best festivals. We have been told by other traders that we | :07:54. | :07:58.
should be really busy and it should be our best one. This is our first | :07:58. | :08:02.
time at Leeds so we are looking forward to it. Everyone is ready | :08:02. | :08:12.
:08:12. | :08:12. | ||
and waiting, just bring on the Indeed, everyone is ready to rock. | :08:12. | :08:16.
I can already hear the DJs playing in the background for the thousands | :08:16. | :08:20.
of campers who have already arrived. If you are thinking of coming down | :08:20. | :08:24.
here this weekend and you haven't yet bought a ticket, or if you are | :08:24. | :08:27.
going to any concert over the summer months, be aware of ticket | :08:27. | :08:31.
touts. They are not illegal but they cause problems, not only to | :08:31. | :08:36.
the police but also the music industry and yourselves, the | :08:36. | :08:39.
punters paying over inflated prices to get into these concerts and | :08:39. | :08:43.
festivals. At this festival, they have come up with a unique idea. | :08:43. | :08:48.
They have a busload of enforcement agents taking to the roads. Danny | :08:48. | :08:53.
Carpenter has been on board. battle against ticket touts has | :08:53. | :09:03.
The practice is illegal at football matches but not festivals. Trading | :09:03. | :09:07.
without a licence or on a public highway or in counterfeit goods are | :09:08. | :09:11.
against the law, so council officials and trading standards | :09:11. | :09:15.
officials are leading this fight. Within minutes, they are in | :09:15. | :09:22.
business. They find no tickets, but he was here last year. We have run | :09:22. | :09:26.
him through the computer and got his details and he has had a | :09:26. | :09:31.
warning. If we find him with any ticket, he will be dealt with as he | :09:31. | :09:36.
is committing a criminal offence. These men produce a licence | :09:36. | :09:40.
claiming its covers them. After consultation they discover it | :09:41. | :09:44.
doesn't and agree to leave. Even on the festival site itself, a ticket | :09:44. | :09:48.
tout is spotted trying to buy tickets from fans as they arrive. | :09:48. | :09:57.
Have you got tickets on you? Have you got IED? You have no authority. | :09:57. | :10:01.
-- identification. A he argues he is trading legally but the festival | :10:01. | :10:09.
say he is trespassing. As I said, leave the site. Eventually, he goes, | :10:09. | :10:13.
one of nine ticket touts whose trade was disrupted. It is a | :10:13. | :10:18.
victory for the team but it is not easy. We try to tackle it with | :10:18. | :10:21.
street trading legislation which prohibits people trading on the | :10:21. | :10:25.
highway, but also, there are restrictions in place as to what | :10:26. | :10:30.
people can do on site. If they are on site we can do with them that | :10:30. | :10:36.
way. They want the law changed so that music events are included and | :10:36. | :10:46.
:10:46. | :10:48. | ||
The advice is that if you want to sell or buy tickets, go to the | :10:48. | :10:53.
industry experts Exchange website, which is Viagogo, or go to your | :10:53. | :10:58.
supplier for a refund, or go to the box office. We heard from the | :10:58. | :11:01.
festival organiser earlier this week that they have now olds sold | :11:01. | :11:06.
75,000 weekend tickets. If you are planning on coming this way, be | :11:06. | :11:13.
careful on the roads because it will be busy. He is a travel update. | :11:13. | :11:16.
A huge influx of people coming to the festival site over the next | :11:16. | :11:20.
three days. Many more will arrive tomorrow and they will be bringing | :11:20. | :11:28.
cars. The advice if you are driving is to head towards the A1M, then | :11:28. | :11:32.
follow the signs to the festival site, which is a short distance | :11:32. | :11:37.
away. Interestingly police are saying turn off your sat enough | :11:37. | :11:43.
because it could take you to the wrong entrance. -- satellite | :11:43. | :11:48.
navigation. Local people will be affected by it traffic disruptions | :11:48. | :11:54.
and road closures. The main closure is the A64 eastbound from the Fox | :11:54. | :11:59.
and Grapes pub to the A1M. Traffic will be turned back from there. | :11:59. | :12:03.
That situation is expected to remain in place until around this | :12:03. | :12:08.
time tomorrow. We have good news on public transport this evening. In | :12:08. | :12:13.
the last couple of hours we have heard that the second day of the | :12:13. | :12:19.
first Transpennine Express strike has been cancelled. They will | :12:19. | :12:22.
endeavour to keep to a normal timetable tomorrow and customers | :12:22. | :12:26.
should be able to travel as they planned to do so earlier in the | :12:26. | :12:31.
week. We have also heard from the union Aslef that they will go into | :12:31. | :12:38.
talks tomorrow. The final pay offer is now no longer final offer, and | :12:38. | :12:45.
it has been described by Aslef as the start of the next stage. | :12:45. | :12:49.
Tomorrow it -- this weekend is the last bank holiday weekend of the | :12:49. | :12:54.
year. 25,000 passengers are expected to pass through Leeds- | :12:54. | :13:01.
Bradford airport, so delays may be possible. If you are driving | :13:01. | :13:05.
tomorrow, head towards the A1M and follow the signs. If you are taking | :13:05. | :13:09.
the train remember the strike is now off. First Trans Pennine trains | :13:09. | :13:19.
:13:19. | :13:27. | ||
are operating as normal. Good news They look like a real rock'n'roll | :13:27. | :13:32.
couple. We will be going back to find out | :13:32. | :13:42.
:13:42. | :14:08. | ||
what the weather is like for the People gathering in Leeds this | :14:08. | :14:11.
afternoon to show their support for rebel forces in Libya. Gun battles | :14:11. | :14:16.
have erupted again in the centre of Tripoli. Today's gathering in Leeds | :14:16. | :14:19.
also acknowledged the support of the other countries who have helped | :14:19. | :14:22.
the anti-Gadaffi movement. Police have arrested a teenager in | :14:22. | :14:24.
connection with a suspected arson attack at a pensioner's home in | :14:24. | :14:27.
Huddersfield. Sheila Handy was asleep when wheelie bins were set | :14:27. | :14:30.
alight outside her kitchen window in the early hours of Monday. A 15- | :14:30. | :14:33.
year-old boy has been questioned by police and is on bail while | :14:33. | :14:35.
inquiries continue. Bradford Cathedral has become the | :14:35. | :14:39.
first in the UK to install solar panels on its roof. It's hoped it | :14:39. | :14:42.
will save the Church of England thousands of pounds in future years. | :14:42. | :14:50.
Heidi Tomlinson reports. From a distance you would never | :14:50. | :14:54.
know anything had changed. You have to make a real effort to find | :14:54. | :14:58.
Bradford Cathedral's latest Green Initiative. | :14:58. | :15:03.
I have had to climb up a very high ladder to see these panels being | :15:03. | :15:08.
installed. Short of climbing up and looking down, this is the only way | :15:08. | :15:13.
you can see the panel's from the outside. There is no chance of them | :15:13. | :15:17.
spoiling the view. This south-facing side Ruth dates | :15:17. | :15:23.
from the 15th century. It is a blast place you would expect to see | :15:23. | :15:26.
solar panels but this is an ecological cathedral. Alongside the | :15:26. | :15:31.
Christian ethos there is and economically friendly one. | :15:31. | :15:34.
We were aware that it was controversial from the beginning. | :15:34. | :15:39.
It is a Grade 1 listed building, the oldest building in Bradford | :15:40. | :15:45.
that has had continual use. We held a public meeting in August last | :15:45. | :15:49.
year and invited neighbours to have a look and ask questions. We have | :15:49. | :15:53.
had a lot of interest, not opposition. | :15:53. | :15:58.
As you would expect, a massive building uses a lot of power. The | :15:58. | :16:03.
organ, lights and hot water create hefty bills. But now the payments | :16:03. | :16:09.
will be cut by 3,000 to 4,000 a year. Bradford is the first UK | :16:09. | :16:13.
Cathedral to install solar panels. Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul | :16:13. | :16:23.
:16:23. | :16:25. | ||
There will no doubt be more wanting to do the same. | :16:25. | :16:30.
I still think there will be some controversy about it. Before 7 | :16:30. | :16:34.
o'clock... A bad night for Sheffield. | :16:34. | :16:38.
Wednesday and United were both dumped out of the Carling Cup by | :16:38. | :16:45.
Premier League opposition. And by special arrangement - the | :16:45. | :16:53.
volunteers turning her historic surged into a floral treat. -- | :16:53. | :16:57.
historic church. Final preparations are being made | :16:57. | :17:00.
for the 44th Leeds West Indian Carnival. 100,000 people are | :17:00. | :17:03.
expected to line the streets of Chapeltown and Harehills on Bank | :17:03. | :17:06.
Holiday Monday for the parade. There had been concerns it might be | :17:06. | :17:08.
cancelled because of recent disorder, but the organisers insist | :17:08. | :17:17.
the show will go one. Emma Glasbey reports. | :17:17. | :17:22.
The oldest and, some would argue, the best Wednesday Indian carnival | :17:22. | :17:31.
in Europe. -- West Indian. Since 1967 it has been bringing the | :17:31. | :17:37.
people of Leeds together. And it is a chance to show the very best of | :17:37. | :17:42.
communities like Chapeltown and Harehills. Fast-forward to 2011 and, | :17:42. | :17:48.
with days to go until the 44th carnival, volunteers are working | :17:48. | :17:51.
flat-out putting the finishing touches to the extreme it -- | :17:51. | :17:55.
extravagant costumes. It is hectic because we have the | :17:56. | :18:02.
Queen's show on Friday, so it is all hands on deck. A bit crazy but | :18:02. | :18:06.
it is all in the spirit of the carnival. It is hard work but | :18:06. | :18:08.
everybody is really enjoying themselves. | :18:09. | :18:14.
This year the event had been at risk. The cuttable centre had been | :18:14. | :18:18.
attacked. Just over two weeks ago bricks were thrown through the | :18:18. | :18:23.
windows and a building set on fire. Old photos of the carnival were | :18:23. | :18:27.
destroyed but the costumes survived. Haroon Jahan, Shazad Ali and Abdul | :18:28. | :18:37.
:18:38. | :18:41. | ||
There had been rude -- rumours that the carnival had been -- would be | :18:41. | :18:46.
called off. We have built up to 45 this -- 45 | :18:46. | :18:55.
years and it is difficult to stop us going forward. | :18:55. | :19:01.
Carnival means a lot to us and do not have carnival means the same as | :19:01. | :19:04.
McDonald's not having cheeseburgers! | :19:04. | :19:09.
Each year the security increases, because so does the size. The | :19:09. | :19:16.
people making this happened are promising another spectacular bay. | :19:16. | :19:25.
-- day. I love the carnival, best food in | :19:25. | :19:28.
town. The top story in sport tonight is | :19:28. | :19:31.
that, less than three weeks into the new season, manager Peter | :19:31. | :19:35.
Jackson has left Bradford City. The Bantams are near the bottom of | :19:35. | :19:39.
League Two after picking up just one point from four matches. In a | :19:39. | :19:42.
statement, Bradford City said that Jackson wanted to leave now to give | :19:42. | :19:45.
the club the best possible chance for the rest of the season and the | :19:45. | :19:55.
board accepted his resignation. I still just want to ask him why. | :19:55. | :20:00.
It is mysterious, isn't it? You would think it was his dream | :20:00. | :20:05.
job. We will try to get the -- to the bottom of it. | :20:05. | :20:09.
Well, there was drama on the field last night as both Sheffield clubs | :20:09. | :20:11.
lost 3-1 in the Carling Cup to Premier League opposition. Ian | :20:11. | :20:18.
Bucknell reports. Wednesday had been many people's | :20:18. | :20:25.
fancy to cause an upset at black -- Blackburn but the Owls' optimism | :20:25. | :20:32.
lasted less than 10 minutes. Wednesday worked the ball back in | :20:32. | :20:36.
the kick-off, lost control of it and watch did fly into the bottom | :20:36. | :20:44.
corner of the goal. Blackburn made it 3-0 soon after but, to the Owls' | :20:44. | :20:52.
credit, they deserve to their consolation goal. -- deserved. | :20:52. | :20:58.
Cresswell gave Sheffield United believe at Everton with a smart | :20:58. | :21:02.
finish. Giant-killing looked credible but Everton had different | :21:02. | :21:08.
ideas. The ball cruelly deflected in for an unwanted double for | :21:08. | :21:14.
Cresswell. Everton scored two more and the game was over. It will be | :21:15. | :21:19.
no consolation to either team that Leeds United are our only team left | :21:19. | :21:29.
:21:29. | :21:31. | ||
in the club. -- in the competition. In cricket, Yorkshire's chances of | :21:31. | :21:33.
avoiding County Championship relegation took a huge blow this | :21:33. | :21:35.
afternoon. Wickets tumbled at Headingley as Warwickshire tore | :21:35. | :21:38.
through the Yorkshire batsmen. The last wicket to fall was Steve | :21:38. | :21:41.
Patterson for 11, but the damage had already been done. Earlier in | :21:41. | :21:45.
the day Warwickshire were all out for 482, a lead of 185. Yorkshire | :21:45. | :21:48.
could only manage 127 in reply and they now have two matches left to | :21:48. | :21:58.
:21:58. | :21:59. | ||
cling to their place in Division One. Things are getting tighter and | :21:59. | :22:02.
tighter. Artists are always trying to tell a | :22:02. | :22:05.
story with their designs, but now a group in North Yorkshire have | :22:05. | :22:07.
decided to recreate an entire classic novel. | :22:07. | :22:10.
They have built an icy forest, recreated a tea party with the | :22:10. | :22:13.
beavers, made a kind-hearted lion and a wicked witch, all from plants | :22:13. | :22:16.
and flowers. Do you really need more clues? We sent Olivia Richwald | :22:16. | :22:26.
:22:26. | :22:31. | ||
behind the wardrobe door to find 50 volunteers, seven months of | :22:31. | :22:37.
planning, thousands of flowers and just one story. This is Pickering | :22:37. | :22:45.
parish church in the wardrobe - the Lion the Witch And the wardrobe. | :22:45. | :22:49.
It is a marvellous children's book, something I loved reading as a | :22:49. | :22:54.
child and I love reading as an adult. It captures everybody's | :22:54. | :23:00.
imagination and it has a Christian theme to it, tied up with Jesus' | :23:00. | :23:06.
death and resurrection. From the wardrobe door you are straight into | :23:06. | :23:10.
the icy forest. They are going to chill this with some fans. From | :23:10. | :23:19.
there, you really get into the story. First you meet Mr Thomas. | :23:19. | :23:29.
:23:29. | :23:30. | ||
Then it is tea at the Bebos' house. -- Beavers'. The story would not be | :23:30. | :23:37.
complete without as land lion and the white witch. | :23:37. | :23:44.
We have taken a modern approach. We had some very different ideas. | :23:44. | :23:49.
It is the first time that Pickering parish church has hosted a flower | :23:49. | :23:55.
festival and it has invested 5,000 to buy the flowers. Entry is free | :23:55. | :24:00.
but organisers are hoping that donations will help to pay for | :24:00. | :24:09.
Newchurch lighting. It is on until September 4th. | :24:09. | :24:17.
At our age, we like the flowers. Let go straight back to Amy. What | :24:17. | :24:23.
is the atmosphere like? It is really building up. All of | :24:23. | :24:27.
the DJs are playing ahead of tomorrow so I think that means that | :24:27. | :24:31.
most of the campers are on site, ready and waiting for the live | :24:31. | :24:37.
music tomorrow. Stephen Dunn has tweeted about the festival. He says, | :24:38. | :24:41.
I was going to get some late tickets but looking at the weather | :24:41. | :24:47.
I have concluded that I am getting old so I am not going to come. | :24:47. | :24:52.
Nothing but a raincoat would have sorted out! Kirsty tweets, I will | :24:52. | :24:57.
hear some of my favourite bands to make me feel better in bad times. | :24:57. | :25:02.
Another tweets says, I look forward to eating a lot and having lots of | :25:02. | :25:09.
cups of tea. I can't wait because I will be interviewing Elbow tomorrow | :25:09. | :25:15.
so if you have any questions for them please do tweet me. The music | :25:15. | :25:20.
starts in less than 24 hours, the live music, that is. We will be | :25:20. | :25:24.
here all day with BBC Look North. Make sure you bring your wellies | :25:24. | :25:34.
:25:34. | :25:36. | ||
and you're wet wipes. I had seen our weather girl in her | :25:36. | :25:46.
A bit of a mixed bag for the festival. Tomorrow does not look | :25:46. | :25:51.
great, there will be some rain around. Tomorrow, sunny spells and | :25:51. | :25:56.
scattered showers. Mostly dry conditions on Sunday. There were | :25:56. | :26:06.
will be quite a breeze as we go through it Sunday. We have one or | :26:06. | :26:09.
two showers creeping in from the West at the moment. They will | :26:09. | :26:13.
continue to do that through the course of this evening before dying | :26:13. | :26:18.
away. Some fine weather on the cards but cloud will increase | :26:18. | :26:23.
overnight. It should stay dry until after dawn. One or two rural spots | :26:23. | :26:27.
could drop back until about nine degrees but for most areas we | :26:27. | :26:33.
should stay in double figures. The sun will rise at four minutes past | :26:33. | :26:37.
six tomorrow morning. A bit of a tricky forecast in terms of the | :26:37. | :26:42.
West would extent of the rain. It edges into East would counties, | :26:42. | :26:52.
:26:52. | :26:53. | ||
pushing westwards through the day. Patchy and rain in the West -- | :26:53. | :26:58.
patchy rain in the West but more persistent in the east. | :26:58. | :27:01.
Temperatures really suppressed under the rain. It should be around | :27:01. | :27:10.
22 degrees but will be more like 17, the high. On Saturday, sunny spells | :27:10. | :27:18.
and scattered showers, more rain in the West. A few light showers to | :27:18. | :27:28.
:27:28. | :27:33. |
