pretty soggy. Thank you. That is all from the BBC. We | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Tuesday's Look North. Tonight: What a dump! Who'd want to | :00:00. | :00:11.
live near a rubbish heap like this? Fly`tippers blight a South Yorkshire | :00:12. | :00:14.
village. We hear from horrified local residents. | :00:15. | :00:19.
Also tonight: The death of a miner at Kellingley Colliery two years ago | :00:20. | :00:27.
leads to a ?300,000 fine. It will never be a laugh for a | :00:28. | :00:38.
life, will it? But it is a fine that has been imposed, that is their | :00:39. | :00:42.
punishment for Wildlife wonder ` the award`winning shot which means a | :00:43. | :00:44.
Scarborough photographer's now one of the best in the world. | :00:45. | :00:50.
What has gone on. And eventually the sunshine did come out here in | :00:51. | :00:54.
Harrogate this afternoon. I will be back later with your full forecast. | :00:55. | :01:02.
Tonight ` the fly`tipping branded a health hazard, as well as blight on | :01:03. | :01:07.
the landscape. Rotting food, household waste and soiled nappies | :01:08. | :01:11.
have been dumped alongside old settees in the former mining village | :01:12. | :01:16.
of Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire. Residents on Railway View say the | :01:17. | :01:20.
stench from fly`tipped waste is anti`social and is attracting vermin | :01:21. | :01:24.
to the area. Barnsley Council estimates it could take weeks to | :01:25. | :01:32.
clear and cost up to ?90,000. A filthy pile of rotting fly | :01:33. | :01:38.
infested household waste. This could the atypical council controlled | :01:39. | :01:43.
rubbish dump, but it's not. In fact, this stinking embankment is just a | :01:44. | :01:48.
few metres away from family homes and a school in a former Yorkshire | :01:49. | :01:55.
mining village. Despite the threat or five years in prison and | :01:56. | :02:00.
unlimited fines, that doesn't seem to have put people off using this | :02:01. | :02:07.
old railway cutting as an unofficial dumping ground for their household | :02:08. | :02:11.
waste. The problem, according to people living nearby, comes from fly | :02:12. | :02:16.
tipping. That is dumping waste illegally. People we spoke to were | :02:17. | :02:23.
nervous to appear on camera for fear of being targeted by fly tippers. | :02:24. | :02:29.
They believe it has become so bad, it now poses a risk to public | :02:30. | :02:35.
health. I get that in my garden. My cats bring rats in. People come | :02:36. | :02:40.
during the day and night and just throw it. If you complain, what is | :02:41. | :02:43.
the reaction? Name`calling. I blame the council and people. Black sacks, | :02:44. | :02:48.
dirty nappies, mattresses, anything. Barnsley council says it | :02:49. | :02:56.
is working to find a permanent solution to the problem. We are | :02:57. | :03:02.
looking at ?95,000 to clear this up. It is something we really are | :03:03. | :03:08.
relying on the public to tell us who is doing it, when it is happening, | :03:09. | :03:15.
see if we can get hold of who is responsible for this. | :03:16. | :03:20.
We have found dirty nappies, broken bottles, and even pieces of | :03:21. | :03:27.
household furniture. There is quite a strong smell, and there are lots | :03:28. | :03:34.
of flies everywhere. Not to mention the problem of rats. | :03:35. | :03:39.
Residents are calling for the cutting to be cleared and properly | :03:40. | :03:44.
fenced off. Their theory is that there is an increasing risk to | :03:45. | :03:46.
public health. In this case, the council's said it | :03:47. | :03:51.
will clear up the mess. In other cases it is not so clear cut. Tom | :03:52. | :03:55.
Pickering runs a waste disposal and specialist clearance company in | :03:56. | :03:59.
Sheffield. He joins us now. How familiar are scenes like this to | :04:00. | :04:04.
you? It is definitely the worst we have seen. ?95,000 is the estimate. | :04:05. | :04:10.
It has grown over a period of time. It could be months, it could be | :04:11. | :04:18.
longer. What about the risk to public health? Local residents say | :04:19. | :04:22.
there is a risk because their children in the area. Definitely, | :04:23. | :04:28.
there is a risk. Once starts rotting, it becomes biohazard waste, | :04:29. | :04:35.
which is a hazard and attracts rats and foxes. Of course there is broken | :04:36. | :04:40.
glass as well. For children playing in the area, that is a problem. | :04:41. | :04:46.
Definitely. Is this a problem that is increasing? Definitely, but not | :04:47. | :04:52.
on that scale. It should have been cleared up before it got to that | :04:53. | :04:57.
scale. Smaller fly tips are definitely more common. What sort of | :04:58. | :05:03.
scenes do you come across typically? You say this is exceptional, but it | :05:04. | :05:10.
is clearly on the increase. What can be done? The typical ones tend to be | :05:11. | :05:16.
broken furniture. A lot of it is people wanting to get rid of waste | :05:17. | :05:21.
cheaply. A paper trail is always needed, which covers the customer | :05:22. | :05:24.
and puts responsibility with the person taking the waste. Thank you | :05:25. | :05:30.
for coming in. We've had lots of comments of our | :05:31. | :05:33.
Facebook page. Amanda Turner makes the point: | :05:34. | :06:03.
Keep your comments coming. You can post a comment on our Facebook page | :06:04. | :06:10.
at BBC Look North Yorkshire or you can send us an email. | :06:11. | :06:19.
Also tonight, the family of a miner who died after a roof collapse at | :06:20. | :06:22.
Kellingley Colliery, say justice has been done. Gerry Gibson from | :06:23. | :06:26.
Sherburn in Elmet died in the accident two years ago. The UK Coal | :06:27. | :06:31.
Mining Company ` which is now in administration ` was today fined | :06:32. | :06:34.
?200,000, after admitting a number of serious safety failings. Emma | :06:35. | :06:41.
Glasbey was in court. Gerry Gibson was working underground | :06:42. | :06:44.
on the afternoon shift here at Kellingley in September 2011. The | :06:45. | :06:49.
roof suddenly collapsed and he was buried under 15 tonnes of rubble. | :06:50. | :06:55.
His death was described today as tragic and preventable. The widow | :06:56. | :07:07.
and son of Gerry Gibson. They came to court today to see the format UK | :07:08. | :07:14.
Coal Mining Company find for the safety failings that led to his | :07:15. | :07:20.
death. He was a week away from his 50th birthday. The roof at | :07:21. | :07:25.
Kellingley Colliery collapsed on him 800 metres underground, killing him | :07:26. | :07:30.
instantly. Miners used their bare hands to get to him with no thoughts | :07:31. | :07:35.
for their own safety. Just days before the accident, there had been | :07:36. | :07:40.
another roof collapse. It was in the same location. Today, administrators | :07:41. | :07:47.
for UK Coal were fined ?200,000. It will never be enough for a life, | :07:48. | :07:53.
will it, but it is a fine that has been imposed. It is this sentence, | :07:54. | :08:00.
that is their punishment. We heard about the effort that Jerry's | :08:01. | :08:06.
colleagues went through to get to him. That must have been emotional | :08:07. | :08:11.
to listen to. Yes, it is difficult to listen to, how the men struggled | :08:12. | :08:17.
with their bare hands to free him. But in that situation, you would not | :08:18. | :08:22.
do much else. There was another fine of ?50,000 for an explosion at | :08:23. | :08:28.
Headingley in November 2010. No one was injured, but the judge at Leeds | :08:29. | :08:35.
Crown Court said UK Coal had a poor record. Gerry Gibson's death was the | :08:36. | :08:39.
seventh fatal accident in five years that had led to UK Coal appearing in | :08:40. | :08:47.
court, and he was the third man to die as a result of a collapse. | :08:48. | :08:52.
Mining is a hazardous industry. But if the right proportions are taken, | :08:53. | :09:00.
risks are assessed wobbly, there is no reason why people should get | :09:01. | :09:05.
injured in mining. Gerry Gibson was an experienced and careful minor. | :09:06. | :09:09.
The court was told that if he had known the full details of the roof | :09:10. | :09:13.
collapse in Kellingley days earlier, he would never have been working in | :09:14. | :09:17.
that area, and his death could have been prevented. | :09:18. | :09:20.
The court heard today that because UK Coal is in administration the | :09:21. | :09:23.
fine could have an impact on fuel allowances for retired miners. This | :09:24. | :09:27.
is what the National Union of Miners had to say to me outside Leeds Crown | :09:28. | :09:30.
Court earlier. Concessionary fuel allowances have | :09:31. | :09:35.
been suspended for retired and we don't employees of UK Coal, so | :09:36. | :09:41.
ironically, the amount of money left to share out amongst creditors will | :09:42. | :09:49.
be reduced if this find is taken out of it. In effect, it is a sad | :09:50. | :09:54.
indictment that Brenda will be paying a fine that has been imposed | :09:55. | :09:58.
on the company that killed her husband. | :09:59. | :10:00.
Well, the National Union of Miners is fighting for the Government to | :10:01. | :10:04.
pay for the fuel allowances. Later on Look North: One to watch! | :10:05. | :10:07.
The Sheffield student taking the world by storm as a top | :10:08. | :10:13.
international trampolinist. More news from around Yorkshire now | :10:14. | :10:17.
and the 32`year`old woman, who was murdered in York on Sunday evening, | :10:18. | :10:20.
has now been formally identified as Nicole Waterhouse. Police inquiries | :10:21. | :10:23.
are continuing tonight. Ms Waterhouse worked for her father's | :10:24. | :10:26.
estate agent business in the city. Her body was discovered in an | :10:27. | :10:32.
apartment in Phoenix Boulevard. A second woman, 23`year`old Karen | :10:33. | :10:36.
Browne was also found injured. She's still critically ill in hospital. A | :10:37. | :10:40.
25`year`old man, arrested at a flat in the centre of York, is still | :10:41. | :10:46.
being questioned. The department store John Lewis has | :10:47. | :10:49.
announced it will be recruiting 300 new staff in York. Building work on | :10:50. | :10:54.
the new store at the Monks Cross development is already underway. | :10:55. | :10:57.
It's expected to open next Spring. The first 100 vacancies are being | :10:58. | :11:01.
recruited at the moment, with another 200 due to be advertised | :11:02. | :11:03.
next month. Cannabis plants worth ?89,000 have | :11:04. | :11:07.
been seized by police in South Yorkshire after "scratch and sniff" | :11:08. | :11:11.
cards replicating the smell of the drug were distributed to households | :11:12. | :11:15.
in the county. 15 arrests were made as a result of tip offs to the | :11:16. | :11:19.
charity Crimestoppers after the cards were handed out. The cards | :11:20. | :11:22.
contain a chemical which smells the same as cannabis plants when they | :11:23. | :11:26.
are growing, helping people to identify any farms near them. | :11:27. | :11:35.
A man in his 60s has been killed in a crash on the M1 in Leeds. The | :11:36. | :11:39.
accident involving a van and Chevrolet car happened this | :11:40. | :11:42.
lunchtime on the northbound carriageway at junction 42. A female | :11:43. | :11:46.
passenger in the car also suffered serious injuries. Police are | :11:47. | :11:58.
appealing for witnesses. Now, we hear a lot about the legacy | :11:59. | :12:03.
of the 2012 London Olympics. Well, for one man who now lives in | :12:04. | :12:07.
Sheffield, the games have given him a whole new life. Serge Ambomo came | :12:08. | :12:11.
to Britain as part of the Cameroon boxing team but refused to go home | :12:12. | :12:16.
as he feared he would not be safe. His attack has been relentless. A | :12:17. | :12:21.
good right hand. Serge Ambomo would go on to you lose his opening bout, | :12:22. | :12:30.
but his efforts in the UK went outside the UK boxing ring. Along | :12:31. | :12:37.
with four other members of the UK boxing team, he left the athletes | :12:38. | :12:43.
village and disappeared into London. More than a year later, he is in | :12:44. | :12:51.
Sheffield will stop his plea for asylum was accepted as officials | :12:52. | :12:54.
were persuaded he was at risk of persecution if he went home. He says | :12:55. | :12:58.
the Cameron government and Olympic coaches made threats against him and | :12:59. | :13:04.
the other boxers. He was sent to South Yorkshire while his asylum | :13:05. | :13:10.
case was considered, and was later introduced to the Sheffield boxing | :13:11. | :13:15.
centre. The code says the gym has taken him to his heart. Got to know | :13:16. | :13:21.
him, watched him train. He looks intimidating but he is one of the | :13:22. | :13:27.
funniest guys I have ever met. He is in the gym every day, training very | :13:28. | :13:29.
hard. Fellow boxers had a whip round so he | :13:30. | :13:46.
could apply for a British boxing license. If approved, he will have | :13:47. | :13:51.
his first professional fight in Sheffield next month. A chance to | :13:52. | :13:54.
start his career again, having already started a new life. | :13:55. | :13:59.
What a turnaround for him. I would not want to take him on! | :14:00. | :14:04.
It's a big day tomorrow for the Tour de France. They'll be announcing the | :14:05. | :14:08.
final details of the route, including exactly where the Grand | :14:09. | :14:12.
Depart will go in Yorkshire. The world's media is already gathering | :14:13. | :14:16.
in Paris to hear the news and Look North will be there too. In the | :14:17. | :14:20.
meantime, businesses are preparing for a bonanza. Cathy Killick reports | :14:21. | :14:23.
from Harrogate, a town all set to celebrate the arrival of the yellow | :14:24. | :14:32.
jersey in its own blooming style. The grey skies and autumnal tints of | :14:33. | :14:40.
October may dominate these gardens at the moment, but the garden has | :14:41. | :14:47.
already got next July in its size. They are planning yellow planting in | :14:48. | :14:53.
honour of the yellow jersey, and they want us all to join in and turn | :14:54. | :15:00.
Yorkshire yellow. Now is the time to plan. You need to plan ahead in a | :15:01. | :15:06.
garden. Look at your containers for next year. Perhaps window boxes and | :15:07. | :15:12.
planters around the house. We are actually doing some annual planting | :15:13. | :15:17.
said there will be met a planting instead of lawns. Here is some | :15:18. | :15:23.
inspiration for you. There are plenty of gold and choices in the | :15:24. | :15:31.
plant world. They are nicely at this hotel. Like all hotels in | :15:32. | :15:38.
Harrogate, they are gearing up for peak occupancy. Looking at all | :15:39. | :15:43.
hotels are already at 90%, despite top rate rises. But hoteliers they | :15:44. | :15:48.
want to put people off. It is about striking a balance. We're not making | :15:49. | :15:53.
a killing. Yes, make a while the sunshine is, but we are certainly | :15:54. | :16:00.
not hiking prices above what we normally do. So, what has Rugby got | :16:01. | :16:07.
to do with the tour? Not much, but the pitch has. In July, this will be | :16:08. | :16:13.
a campsite as the club takes advantage of relaxed planning laws | :16:14. | :16:18.
that will allow land along the route to take intense, caravans and | :16:19. | :16:22.
motorhomes. If we get the numbers we are expecting, it will be worth it. | :16:23. | :16:30.
We have got a lot of green areas around Harrogate. You can't use | :16:31. | :16:35.
those areas for camping. Our ground will be the closest one to the | :16:36. | :16:40.
centre of town. The tour is an extraordinary event. The French | :16:41. | :16:44.
aren't the only ones who can put on a show. Eight months to go, | :16:45. | :16:47.
Harrogate is getting ready to paint the town yellow. | :16:48. | :16:50.
Well, tomorrow we'll be live from Paris, and one of the villages on | :16:51. | :16:54.
the route which is already gearing up for the tour. | :16:55. | :17:00.
Before seven o'clock: Ticking away ` a celebration of Leeds' clockmaking | :17:01. | :17:03.
heritage as the Potts company timepieces go on display. And, one | :17:04. | :17:08.
of Yorkshire's best wildlife photographers is named as one of the | :17:09. | :17:10.
best in the world. A student from Sheffield is taking | :17:11. | :17:26.
the world by storm, making a name for herself as a top international | :17:27. | :17:30.
trampolinist. Bryony Page has just taken Gold at the World Cup in | :17:31. | :17:34.
Denmark beating off tough competition from Olympic gymnasts. | :17:35. | :17:38.
Her success came as a bit of a surprise as she wasn't expecting to | :17:39. | :17:43.
do so well. She's now training every day and hopes to make it into Team | :17:44. | :17:47.
GB for the next Olympics. Ian White's been to meet her. | :17:48. | :17:57.
Meet Bryony Page. 22 years old, a student at Sheffield University, and | :17:58. | :18:04.
now a gold medal winning trampoline is. She has just beaten the Olympic | :18:05. | :18:11.
champion at the World Cup competition in Denmark. I didn't | :18:12. | :18:19.
expect to win in Denmark. I finished my routine, I was pleased with how | :18:20. | :18:29.
it had gone, and I just sat down and watch the other competitors. I | :18:30. | :18:35.
didn't even think to look at the scoreboard until my friend finished, | :18:36. | :18:42.
and she said look at the scoreboard, you have overtaken the | :18:43. | :18:47.
Olympic champion. What is going on? It was a big deal for me. It has | :18:48. | :18:52.
been a remarkable achievement for Bryony, fitting in her training | :18:53. | :18:56.
around her biology studies. Her work here is complete contrast to what | :18:57. | :19:01.
she does in the gym. I chose biology as it is completely different to | :19:02. | :19:05.
trampolining. So I would have different aspects of my life. She | :19:06. | :19:11.
trains most days with coach Paul Greaves, and he knows she is | :19:12. | :19:15.
special. She can do a triple twisting double back somersault, and | :19:16. | :19:21.
is the first woman last year he was able to do it. She compete in an | :19:22. | :19:24.
international circuit where there are only five people in the `` five | :19:25. | :19:30.
women in the world who can do that skill. She hopes to compete in the | :19:31. | :19:35.
Olympics in Rio in 2016. Doesn't time fly when you're having | :19:36. | :19:40.
fun? The clock is ticking, and we only have a few minutes left to tell | :19:41. | :19:47.
you about our next story. Leeds was at the forefront of clock making in | :19:48. | :19:51.
the 19th century, and now a new exhibition has brought many of those | :19:52. | :19:55.
ancient timepieces back to the city. The elegant and intricate inner | :19:56. | :20:00.
workings of eight pots clock. Engineered more than a century ago, | :20:01. | :20:07.
and still keeping time. Now, 24 that were in a private collection of | :20:08. | :20:13.
backing Leeds. All they need is winding once a day. They are all | :20:14. | :20:19.
about quality. Look at the woodwork around the clock faces, the way the | :20:20. | :20:25.
panels are painted, the way the hands are made. Everything is about | :20:26. | :20:31.
quality. They are all on the civic buildings, on the churches. You | :20:32. | :20:36.
taken for granted, the chiming. I didn't this company made all the | :20:37. | :20:41.
clocks. Potts soon became the North's eminent clockmaker. The vast | :20:42. | :20:46.
majority of clocks in Yorkshire were made by the firm, and in West | :20:47. | :20:52.
Yorks, nearly every outside clock is a Potts. In Otley the marketplace | :20:53. | :20:56.
clock is a Potts. The giant hands tell the time for generations. You'd | :20:57. | :21:04.
realise just how big these clocks are when you get back down to ground | :21:05. | :21:14.
level. You can tell this is a Potts one because of the club on the end | :21:15. | :21:19.
of the hour hand. That was the company's trademark. Which makes | :21:20. | :21:22.
clock spotting a bit easier. This one ended up in South America. So, | :21:23. | :21:28.
Potts clocks ended up all over the world, but in Leeds they are | :21:29. | :21:33.
everywhere. Yes, even in schools. You can see it says Leeds. So this | :21:34. | :21:45.
was in a school? Yes, this came from the Royal Park School in Hyde Park. | :21:46. | :21:50.
It is about turn`of`the`century. It would have been in the main hall or | :21:51. | :22:00.
one of the main corridors. Potts put Leeds at the centre of British clock | :22:01. | :22:07.
making, but the firm closed in the 1960s. The clocks, though, keep | :22:08. | :22:12.
ticking, a daily reminder of one of Yorkshire's forgotten trades. | :22:13. | :22:20.
He's already known as one of Yorkshire's best wildlife | :22:21. | :22:23.
photographers but now Steve Race from Scarborough has been named as | :22:24. | :22:28.
one of the best in the world. At an awards ceremony, described as the | :22:29. | :22:31.
profession's equivalent to the Oscars, an image captured by Steve | :22:32. | :22:35.
was selected out of 46,000 entries from all over the world. Phil | :22:36. | :22:39.
Connell has been to meet him on the North York Moors. | :22:40. | :22:49.
For any wildlife photographer, it is the early bird who catches the one. | :22:50. | :22:57.
Steve Race often starts work at 5am, the best time of day to capture | :22:58. | :23:00.
his award`winning pictures. It is the hours of being outdoors in | :23:01. | :23:15.
a wild space and sitting for a while, quietly, and just seeing what | :23:16. | :23:20.
comes across your path. It is this unusual image of two gannets that | :23:21. | :23:26.
has brought his talent to the attention of the world. At an awards | :23:27. | :23:31.
night in London, the industry's equivalent of the Oscars, the | :23:32. | :23:37.
photograph was chosen out of 46,000 worldwide entries, with Steve Race | :23:38. | :23:42.
just one of six Britons to be commended. To get this true special | :23:43. | :23:48.
moment of them offering the flowers to each other, and for the necklace | :23:49. | :23:56.
to actually go around the neck of the bird, for me was exceptional. I | :23:57. | :24:00.
have had sheer silence because people look at it and think that is | :24:01. | :24:07.
truly special. To see these birds interacting through that image is | :24:08. | :24:11.
fantastic. Steve's interest in wildlife began at the age of ten. 36 | :24:12. | :24:18.
years later, hundreds of special moments have now been captured on | :24:19. | :24:24.
his camera. It could be instant, or it could be spending a lot of time. | :24:25. | :24:30.
But when you capture that special image, you just know. You look at it | :24:31. | :24:35.
and think, that is the one. Steve's image is now part of a | :24:36. | :24:40.
touring expedition. He is already looking for that next magic moment. | :24:41. | :24:43.
They are really quite extraordinary. We've got some more intriguing | :24:44. | :24:48.
pictures next. A pair of unlikely friends trying to escape the | :24:49. | :24:52.
confines of their owner's kitchen, which has been watched more than | :24:53. | :24:55.
400,000 times on the internet. Dexter the cat, and his dog friend | :24:56. | :24:59.
Gizmo, were shut in the kitchen at owner Matt Hurst's home in Sheffield | :25:00. | :25:04.
every morning when he left for work. After finding them in the rest of | :25:05. | :25:08.
the house for three days running, he set up a camera to find out how they | :25:09. | :25:12.
were making their escape. Hey presto! How clever are they? | :25:13. | :25:28.
My grandma's cat used to be able to open the door handles by jumping up, | :25:29. | :25:36.
so they turned them all upside down. The weather has been a bit grotty, | :25:37. | :25:51.
but there are some beautiful autumnal colours out there. This is | :25:52. | :25:58.
autumn at Chatsworth house. These were all taken this afternoon. | :25:59. | :26:06.
It has been a particularly mild day today. Temperatures reached 17 | :26:07. | :26:11.
degrees in places. Another mild night as well. Tomorrow, the rain | :26:12. | :26:16.
will turn more showery through the course of the day. Very unsettled | :26:17. | :26:31.
weather over the next few days. We had some decent spells of whether | :26:32. | :26:37.
through this afternoon, but there are still some showers out there. | :26:38. | :26:42.
Really quite wet night. Those showers will merge into a longer | :26:43. | :26:46.
spell of rain which will spread eastwards. Some very heavy, possibly | :26:47. | :26:50.
thundery downpours. But a mild night with temperatures staying in double | :26:51. | :26:52.
figures. The sun will rise at 7:48am. There | :26:53. | :27:02.
will be a fair amount of spray on the roads if you are out in the rush | :27:03. | :27:08.
hour tomorrow, and further spells of rainfall a time. We will see an | :27:09. | :27:15.
improvement to the day. Still the risk of a few showers to the | :27:16. | :27:20.
afternoon, but some pleasant spells of sunshine in between. Not as mild | :27:21. | :27:25.
as today but still a little above average at 14 or 15 degrees. As | :27:26. | :27:30.
promised, Thursday looks to be a decent day. Chilly overnight into | :27:31. | :27:35.
Thursday, and a decent day. Unsettled again overnight and into | :27:36. | :27:38.
Friday. At the moment, Saturday doesn't look too bad. One to watch. | :27:39. | :27:47.
That is all from us. Goodbye. | :27:48. | :27:50. |
