That is all from the BBC's news at six, so it is goodbye from | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening and welcome to Wednesday's Look North On the | :00:00. | :00:00.
programme tonight ` murdered on the last delivery of his last shift. The | :00:07. | :00:10.
25`year`old student stabbed to death in Sheffield during his final pizza | :00:11. | :00:18.
delivery. I could only imagine the pain his | :00:19. | :00:23.
family are feeling hearing this news. He was very close to his | :00:24. | :00:26.
family. Also tonight: Develop or demolish ` the two options facing | :00:27. | :00:29.
Bradford's iconic Odeon theatre. Campaigners say it can be saved, but | :00:30. | :00:36.
at what cost? We like to be first with the news. | :00:37. | :00:42.
Things are already here underway for Halloween. We have a spell of wet | :00:43. | :00:50.
and Web `` windy weather through the course of this evening. I will be | :00:51. | :00:54.
back later in the programme with the details. | :00:55. | :01:01.
First tonight to the hunt for the killer of a 25`year`old Sri Lankan | :01:02. | :01:06.
student who was stabbed to death on his final shift as a pizza delivery | :01:07. | :01:10.
driver. Police say the attack was brutal and shocking. | :01:11. | :01:13.
Tavisha Lakindu Peiris was found dead in his car on Sunday night. | :01:14. | :01:17.
He'd studied at Sheffield Hallam University and was about to begin | :01:18. | :01:21.
his dream job as an IT consultant. Phil Bodmer is in Sheffield for us | :01:22. | :01:30.
now, Phil. As you say, Tavisha Lakindu Peiris | :01:31. | :01:37.
was described as kind and caring. He was aiming to be a professional IT | :01:38. | :01:42.
consultant. Like many young people, he was working part`time as a pizza | :01:43. | :01:50.
delivery driver. Sadly, those aspirations and ambitions were cut | :01:51. | :01:53.
short on Sunday night in a submerged `` suburban street in Sheffield in a | :01:54. | :02:00.
motiveless Lee `` motiveless stabbing attack. From shrill anchor, | :02:01. | :02:08.
his life ended in the most brutal way. `` from shrill anchor. He was a | :02:09. | :02:18.
part`time delivery boy. Colleagues became concerned after he failed to | :02:19. | :02:22.
deliver his last order. He was found unconscious at the core of his | :02:23. | :02:28.
Toyota in the parking bay. He had been stabbed a number of times. I | :02:29. | :02:35.
could only imagine the pain his family are feeling hearing this | :02:36. | :02:39.
news. He was very close to his family and spoke to his mother every | :02:40. | :02:46.
single day. I am appealing to the mothers out there. Was it your son | :02:47. | :02:54.
Matt came home dishevelled with bloodstained clothing? I am asking | :02:55. | :02:58.
anybody out there to think about that. With any crime, there is | :02:59. | :03:07.
always somebody, no matter how close to that person, knows what they have | :03:08. | :03:10.
gone and done. I don't know whether I am looking for one person or two | :03:11. | :03:16.
or three people. The more people that are involved, the more people | :03:17. | :03:18.
that know about it. Somebody knows something. Sheffield Hallam | :03:19. | :03:24.
University said it was saddened to hear of the death. Today one of his | :03:25. | :03:33.
friends spoke about a young man described as hard`working, | :03:34. | :03:38.
intelligent and caring. He was a very smart guy, generous guy. Why | :03:39. | :03:45.
would somebody hurt him? Same`macro that is the thing. He has never done | :03:46. | :03:50.
anything wrong. I don't know who could have done this kind of thing | :03:51. | :03:58.
in cold blood. Police Sebi and so may lie within | :03:59. | :04:07.
the local community. `` police say. Nobody was available to talk to us | :04:08. | :04:12.
from this pizza Company. They did say they were shocked by the death | :04:13. | :04:16.
and that player `` prayers go out to colleagues and family. They say the | :04:17. | :04:20.
matter is under investigation by police and we are helping with | :04:21. | :04:24.
enquiries but can't comment further. Tonight, 50 police officers are | :04:25. | :04:28.
working on this case and are urging anyone who may make `` you may have | :04:29. | :04:33.
any suspicions, to contact them in a matter of urgency. | :04:34. | :04:37.
House prices across Yorkshire have remained pretty static over the past | :04:38. | :04:41.
year, according to the latest figures from the Land Registry. | :04:42. | :04:43.
Some areas like Barnsley, Kirklees and Leeds have seen the average | :04:44. | :04:48.
price of a house drop by up to 3.7%. But in Doncaster, they're really | :04:49. | :04:51.
bucking the trend and the price increase there is higher than any | :04:52. | :04:54.
other metropolitan district in England. Here's Joe Inwood. | :04:55. | :05:04.
Could it be cheaper prices that has caused the big rise? The average | :05:05. | :05:12.
price in got Doncaster still goes for ?100,000. A figure across south | :05:13. | :05:17.
Yorkshire is a feud thousand more. Compare that to North Yorkshire | :05:18. | :05:22.
where you would pay almost 169,000. West Yorkshire, where the average | :05:23. | :05:28.
house costs 107,000. Nationally, the figure is just under ?170,000. Those | :05:29. | :05:35.
are the prices you would pay but in terms of how fast they are going up, | :05:36. | :05:40.
Doncaster beats the lots. It is the English metropolitan district with | :05:41. | :05:44.
the biggest rise. 4.1% in the past year. If things keep going the way | :05:45. | :05:53.
they have been, showing people around is something that Sandra, who | :05:54. | :05:57.
is desperate to sell, will have to be doing a whole lot more. It is on | :05:58. | :06:02.
the up. It is fantastic because it means we may get more viewers, more | :06:03. | :06:07.
people who are interested in buying, which will relieve a lot of | :06:08. | :06:12.
tension and it gives us a chance to go and buy what we want to buy. That | :06:13. | :06:20.
sellers optimism is not always found in the region. In rather rum, prices | :06:21. | :06:26.
are down. In Barnsley, they are down 2.5%. `` in rather run, prices are | :06:27. | :06:33.
down. Why does Doncaster but the trend? It is a combination of a low | :06:34. | :06:40.
starting point and high levels of investment. It doesn't take much to | :06:41. | :06:49.
get 4.1% increase in market value. With a regeneration scheme around, | :06:50. | :06:56.
that brings in people and employment and there is money being brought | :06:57. | :07:00.
into this market. For Sandra and her family, they hope that money will | :07:01. | :07:05.
soon be coming their way. We have found the perfect place to move to. | :07:06. | :07:12.
Without having autism, he is going to have the top floor of his whole | :07:13. | :07:16.
flat. It will make him independent living at home so we are there at | :07:17. | :07:21.
the time `` all the time. It will make life easier for us all. If the | :07:22. | :07:26.
next 12 months are anything like the last, that for sale sign shouldn't | :07:27. | :07:36.
be there for too much longer. Joining us from our studio in | :07:37. | :07:41.
Nottingham is Miles Shipside from Rightmove. Why is Doncaster Bucking | :07:42. | :07:50.
the trend like this? There is increased employment and it creates | :07:51. | :07:54.
demand for housing and affordability is good in Doncaster because house | :07:55. | :08:00.
prices are lower. Industry has some distribution centres, good transport | :08:01. | :08:05.
links, good investment in the area. It is creating demand plus investors | :08:06. | :08:08.
are saying goodbye to let returns as well. You don't think this is a | :08:09. | :08:16.
blip? House prices are continuing to fall in places like Kirklees, | :08:17. | :08:21.
Calderdale, Leeds. Doncaster started sooner because of those factors. I | :08:22. | :08:27.
was speaking to an estate agent in Leeds today and they said their | :08:28. | :08:30.
starter Home Office on the south side has had the best two months | :08:31. | :08:35.
since 2008. Leeds and some other areas are going to start catching | :08:36. | :08:42.
Doncaster up. I presume you were able to measure it. Is it down to | :08:43. | :08:48.
investors or first`time buyers? Who are we talking about? With the | :08:49. | :08:54.
mortgage market boring and more mortgages becoming available and the | :08:55. | :09:00.
start of the help to buy scheme, Merle `` more first`time buyers are | :09:01. | :09:06.
coming into the market. There is some good demand there. You are | :09:07. | :09:11.
sounding very optimistic. Does this look like a recovery in the housing | :09:12. | :09:17.
market? It is nothing like the South and in London that it has been a | :09:18. | :09:21.
long time coming and that pent up demand for housing and the cost of | :09:22. | :09:25.
renting is high. Buying a property if you can get together that 5% | :09:26. | :09:30.
deposit will help more people get onto the housing ladder. Thank you | :09:31. | :09:34.
very much. Later on Look North: Scaling new | :09:35. | :09:37.
heights ` North Yorkshire mountaineer Alan Hinkes adds writing | :09:38. | :09:38.
a book to his list of conquests. Police investigating an incident of | :09:39. | :09:48.
a large`scale disorder in Sheffield have released CCTV images of six | :09:49. | :09:54.
people they want to speak to. A number of men and teenagers were | :09:55. | :09:57.
involved in the altercation which happened outside a pub in Leopold | :09:58. | :10:01.
Street at about 7pm on Saturday the 24th August. Several people were | :10:02. | :10:06.
assaulted and furniture at the pub was damaged. Anyone who recognises | :10:07. | :10:11.
any of the people is asked to call South Yorkshire Police. | :10:12. | :10:14.
A scheme to deter bicycle thefts in York has led to a 39% drop in the | :10:15. | :10:18.
crime over the past five years, according to the council. As part of | :10:19. | :10:22.
Operation Spoke, an ultra`violet security code is added to the bike. | :10:23. | :10:28.
It's then registered on a national database so, if stolen, it can be | :10:29. | :10:33.
identified. Thousands of bikes have now been registered and the council | :10:34. | :10:41.
plans to extend the scheme. 15,000 bikes with security codes is | :10:42. | :10:49.
a great deal for us. We want to push on to make sure every bike has this | :10:50. | :10:55.
code. You can see it has been marked and the chance of you getting done | :10:56. | :10:58.
for it would be greater. Campaigners hoping to transform the | :10:59. | :11:01.
Bradford Odeon site have had their first look inside. The historic | :11:02. | :11:04.
building has been empty and unused for 13 years. Revamping it could | :11:05. | :11:08.
cost up to ?20 million. Emma Glasbey reports. | :11:09. | :11:15.
18 years of changing faces for one of Yorkshire's most historic | :11:16. | :11:24.
buildings. The Bradford Odeon has not been used since 2000. For more | :11:25. | :11:32.
than a decade, it has been lefty `` it has been left empty and it has | :11:33. | :11:37.
taken its toll. Builders can see what they could be taking on. There | :11:38. | :11:41.
is the group wanted to make it a live concert venue. You have to see | :11:42. | :11:49.
beyond the mess and the rubbish. Bradford needs an attraction to | :11:50. | :11:53.
bring people into the city centre and this building would do so. And | :11:54. | :11:57.
then there is the group wanting it to be a music and arts venue owned | :11:58. | :12:02.
by the community. It is like going into the Titanic where it is all | :12:03. | :12:08.
laying there. There is moss and fungus everywhere. It didn't feel as | :12:09. | :12:15.
bad as we expected. Bradford Council will look at the different bids once | :12:16. | :12:19.
they are in and make a decision but the future of this building is not | :12:20. | :12:24.
yet secure. Hopefully, someone will come forward and bring forward | :12:25. | :12:32.
something that is deliverable. We don't want to go back to a blank | :12:33. | :12:38.
sheet of paper which may include demolition. I am optimistic. With so | :12:39. | :12:45.
much history, there are plenty of people hoping for a bright future | :12:46. | :12:50.
for the building but bringing it back to life could cost between 15 | :12:51. | :12:55.
and ?20 million. This building has been wasted for the past 13 years | :12:56. | :13:01.
but back in the 1930s, it opened as a ballroom. In their 60s, it played | :13:02. | :13:07.
host to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It is hoped that some of | :13:08. | :13:10.
that former glory could be restored in the next few years. | :13:11. | :13:18.
Fascinating to see inside it after so long. Before seven o'clock: | :13:19. | :13:25.
Spooky goings on in North Yorkshire. We are getting ready for Halloween | :13:26. | :13:29.
here but if you are of a nervous disposition, you may want to look | :13:30. | :13:32.
away now. Look at this! Onto sport and the Winter Olympics | :13:33. | :13:42.
at Socchi in Russia are now just 100 days away. With high hopes of a | :13:43. | :13:48.
medal is James Woods from Sheffield. The man they call Woodsy, is ranked | :13:49. | :13:51.
as Great Britain's top slopestyle skier. He's bagged two World Cup | :13:52. | :13:57.
titles in the last 12 months. Slopestyle will be making its | :13:58. | :14:00.
Olympic debut, when the Winter Games come around in February. | :14:01. | :14:11.
Whichever one overwhelms you the most, pick that one. There is not | :14:12. | :14:18.
one person monopolising. There is a whole bank of guys ready to take it. | :14:19. | :14:24.
You really just take a stab in the dark and pick your favourite and aim | :14:25. | :14:27.
for him. Still in York and in sport York City | :14:28. | :14:30.
had a valuable win against Scunthorpe which lifted them five | :14:31. | :14:34.
points clear of the relegation zone. Danny Carpenter reports. | :14:35. | :14:42.
Sometimes, all you need to change your fortunes is a slice of luck and | :14:43. | :14:47.
look for York City came via a large slice. Josh Carson's shot ballooned | :14:48. | :14:55.
off a defender after three minutes. No such persistence was needed for | :14:56. | :15:03.
Wes Fletcher. City, who had lost four of their previous five games | :15:04. | :15:08.
were in a comfortable position. Goals here, like London buses, all | :15:09. | :15:16.
at once. You just have to stick out an arm. Nothing dodgy about the | :15:17. | :15:23.
finish. The same player made it four with a uncontested volley. City were | :15:24. | :15:32.
home dried by half`time. The night and the points belonged to York. | :15:33. | :15:37.
Now to a Yorkshireman who's no stranger to danger and is in fact | :15:38. | :15:41.
the only Briton to have scaled all 14 of the world's 8,000 metre peaks | :15:42. | :15:46.
which includes Everest and K2. Alan Hinkes first took up rock climbing | :15:47. | :15:49.
at Northallerton Grammar School but his mountaineering career has taken | :15:50. | :15:54.
him much, much higher. And now he can add author to his remarkable | :15:55. | :15:58.
list of achievements. He joins us now. I want to get straight on to | :15:59. | :16:12.
the crooks of this because these mountains are the tallest in the | :16:13. | :16:17.
world and there is a point when you climb them, when you enter the death | :16:18. | :16:23.
zone. Beyond that point, the body begins to deteriorate and you are | :16:24. | :16:28.
beginning to die. Yes and there is no chance of rescue from helicopter. | :16:29. | :16:38.
The highest dash they can't get up to the top. No matter how good the | :16:39. | :16:44.
stove you have to melt snow and ice, there is no water. You started rock | :16:45. | :16:55.
climbing at Northallerton Grammar School. I started rock climbing on | :16:56. | :17:06.
the sandstone and limestone of Yorkshire. We have some fantastic | :17:07. | :17:11.
pictures from the book. Do you know where that is? That is from the top | :17:12. | :17:21.
of K2. That is an avalanche down K2. That is a 10,000 foot drop down | :17:22. | :17:30.
below the climber. That is 26,000 feet and K2 is another 2000 feet | :17:31. | :17:36.
above that. So many people have died attempting to claim these | :17:37. | :17:42.
mountains. You have climbed all 14. It is astounding. What drives you on | :17:43. | :17:48.
to do that? I get asked that a lot. I have come to terms with it and I | :17:49. | :17:54.
should be dead! People don't do it because the reason is that they | :17:55. | :18:01.
could be killed. Has there ever been any occasion when you felt you were | :18:02. | :18:06.
desperately close to dying? There has been a few but the very last | :18:07. | :18:11.
one, the third highest mountain in the world, I did have a near death | :18:12. | :18:17.
experience. I got to the top of my own in the dark and a blizzard | :18:18. | :18:21.
started and I couldn't see a thing, not even with a head torch. I | :18:22. | :18:30.
started having a panic attack and thought I was going to die. Somehow, | :18:31. | :18:37.
I pulled myself together and pushed the fear into a little compartment | :18:38. | :18:42.
in my head. You mentioned your grandma and your daughter, Fiona, in | :18:43. | :18:47.
the book. They have had quite a lot to put up with for many years. | :18:48. | :18:53.
Micron always thought, "when are you going to pack up this climbing? " `` | :18:54. | :18:58.
my ground. `` my grandma. What are you doing next? I might | :18:59. | :19:16.
write another book. That was a joke. I would like to go down the deepest | :19:17. | :19:23.
hole in the world. A bit of pot holing. The photographs you have | :19:24. | :19:27.
taken are stunning. It is a great read. | :19:28. | :19:29.
Now it's nearly Halloween and one of our stately homes is tonight | :19:30. | :19:32.
transforming itself for its first ever spooky event. | :19:33. | :19:35.
Castle Howard in North Yorkshire is perhaps best known for its costume | :19:36. | :19:38.
dramas, but tonight it's a drama of a different kind. Ian White can tell | :19:39. | :19:40.
us more. Talk about a drama. I am soaking | :19:41. | :19:54.
wet, it is blowing a gale, my puppy has blown off. Thousands of people | :19:55. | :19:57.
have turned up in Halloween costumes. Castle Howard is all lit | :19:58. | :20:05.
up. We have flame`throwers and jugglers. Look at these guys here. | :20:06. | :20:09.
One of the highlights will be the Halloween horse show which starts | :20:10. | :20:15.
shortly. I have taken a look behind the scenes. It is not everyday you | :20:16. | :20:19.
see something like this going on at Castle Howard. A group of stuntmen | :20:20. | :20:23.
and actors have spent the day putting the finishing touches to a | :20:24. | :20:29.
show for Halloween. It is all fancy, it is all for kids and | :20:30. | :20:35.
grown`ups. We have all sorts of magical creatures. The horses are | :20:36. | :20:38.
the stars of the show, cleverly trained to act alongside the humours | :20:39. | :20:47.
`` humans. It is so much fun. When I was a kid, this was what I always | :20:48. | :20:54.
wanted to do. Dress up and entertain people. This show, we get to do a | :20:55. | :21:00.
lot and we have put a lot of things in which we think will be good for | :21:01. | :21:08.
the kids. In the story, these are the nice guys. I don't do scary very | :21:09. | :21:17.
well. I am the one who is scared instead. I am a nice boy. I have a | :21:18. | :21:29.
lot of body armour and have a scary mask. There is a lot of injuries. | :21:30. | :21:36.
The highs massively outweigh the logos. It is amazing. While the | :21:37. | :21:41.
horses spend the afternoon relaxing in the sunshine, it was time for a | :21:42. | :21:48.
bit of male grooming and time to get into character. If you want to see | :21:49. | :21:54.
what they look like, here they are. Ricky is looking a lot better than | :21:55. | :21:59.
he was earlier. You have something spectacular for us? Yes. Here we go | :22:00. | :22:07.
and stop they are light in the flames. We will see a horse jump. He | :22:08. | :22:22.
has failed. He is scared. Look at this. It has done it. Simon, you | :22:23. | :22:33.
must love this. It is brilliant, not that I have always appreciated | :22:34. | :22:39.
Halloween. All I can say is it is wonderful this evening. Lots of | :22:40. | :22:43.
people here, house looking wonderful and everyone will enjoy themselves. | :22:44. | :22:48.
We'll be able to get to tonight? Hopefully. The idea is to get people | :22:49. | :22:56.
through the doors. It has been a real success tonight. It is the | :22:57. | :23:04.
first time we have done it. We have a few problems but we are getting | :23:05. | :23:10.
there. The weather doesn't help. It adds to the fun. I'll blame the | :23:11. | :23:14.
weather presenters back in the studio. Have a great time if you are | :23:15. | :23:21.
coming down here tonight. That poor horse! | :23:22. | :23:28.
We would love your Halloween pictures, pumpkins included. Send | :23:29. | :23:30.
them to this `` us. Now, you are going to carve a | :23:31. | :23:54.
pumpkin and put a cat inside it, aren't you? | :23:55. | :24:04.
We have some pictures of the weather. The clouds are starting to | :24:05. | :24:13.
break up there. We have an autumnal scene near Halifax. This is a cat | :24:14. | :24:33.
enjoying the weather in the garden. It is rather wet out there but it | :24:34. | :24:38.
has been forecast so you can't blame us. Tomorrow, there would be some | :24:39. | :24:43.
sunshine around but a few showers being blown in on a brisk breeze. | :24:44. | :24:50.
The weather stays fairly unsettled and we have low pressure for the | :24:51. | :24:54.
weekend. There will be some heavy rain at times and some strong winds | :24:55. | :25:00.
also. At the moment, it is wet and windy. This weather front is | :25:01. | :25:06.
trekking south eastwards. Wet and windy weather is creeping south | :25:07. | :25:11.
eastwards. It is an improvement later on in the night to dry | :25:12. | :25:16.
conditions with some clear spells. Temperatures down to five Celsius. | :25:17. | :25:25.
The sun will rise just after 78 `` just after 7am. Tomorrow morning, | :25:26. | :25:34.
another fine start to the day and there will be some fine weather | :25:35. | :25:39.
about. There will always be the risk of showers, particularly for Western | :25:40. | :25:44.
and central parts. Those showers will be blown through on a brisk | :25:45. | :25:53.
West /Southwest breeze. Temperatures around 11 Celsius. A lot of | :25:54. | :26:04.
uncertainty about Friday at `` Friday and the weekend. Typical | :26:05. | :26:06.
autumn storms. That is as far as we go. I will be | :26:07. | :26:11.
back at 10:25pm. Goodbye. Everyday normal things that everybody | :26:12. | :26:40.
does is where I use my energy. I haven't got an extravagant | :26:41. | :26:43.
lifestyle, I've not got a hot tub outside or | :26:44. | :26:45.
something like that. In essence, it is | :26:46. | :26:48.
a choice between heating or eating. We will still eat | :26:49. | :26:52.
and we will still have heating | :26:53. | :26:57. |
