Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme tonight. Drugs, the | :00:00. | :00:10.
Co`op Bank and a former Bradford councillor. Methodist Minister Paul | :00:11. | :00:13.
Flowers facing claims he bought and used illegal drugs is suspended from | :00:14. | :00:18.
the Labour Party. We'll also hear from a friend who says she stands by | :00:19. | :00:20.
him. Also tonight. Has Yorkshire's jobs | :00:21. | :00:25.
market turned a corner? 200 new jobs in York and thousands more promised, | :00:26. | :00:28.
but the latest figures show unemployment still on the rise And | :00:29. | :00:31.
we talk to one of Sheffield's coolest musical exports, the Arctic | :00:32. | :00:34.
Monkeys, ahead of tonight's hometown gig. | :00:35. | :00:41.
And in sport, he's already a champion, but he needs cash to keep | :00:42. | :00:45.
him racing. We go track`side with Doncaster teenager Alex Gill. | :00:46. | :00:53.
A cold night to come with a widespread frost. The very latest | :00:54. | :01:04.
coming up shortly. But first tonight to the | :01:05. | :01:06.
investigation into former Bradford Labour councillor and Methodist | :01:07. | :01:09.
Minister Paul Flowers, over claims he bought and used illegal drugs. | :01:10. | :01:15.
There are now calls for a probe into his appointment as chairman of the | :01:16. | :01:18.
Co`op Bank. A national newspaper posted a video online apparently | :01:19. | :01:21.
showing Mr Flowers handing over ?300 to buy drugs. This afternoon he was | :01:22. | :01:26.
suspended by the Labour party. Our crime correspondent John Cundy | :01:27. | :01:29.
reports. Next tonight, has Yorkshire's jobs market turned a | :01:30. | :01:34.
corner? Not at home in Bradford today as | :01:35. | :01:39.
look North sought the whereabouts of Paul Flowers. He is believed to be | :01:40. | :01:43.
staying with friends somewhere outside Yorkshire. Keeping a low | :01:44. | :01:50.
profile after revelations in newspapers of his alleged buying of | :01:51. | :01:56.
drugs in the. That just days after Mr Flowers was questioned by the | :01:57. | :01:59.
Treasury select committee over his three`year chairmanship of the | :02:00. | :02:05.
co`operative bank. He left in May with Anna 1.5 pounds found `` gap in | :02:06. | :02:18.
its finances. In 2001 he became a Labour councillor in Bradford. In | :02:19. | :02:22.
2010 he became chair of the co`operative bank. He stood down the | :02:23. | :02:26.
following year as a counsellor. In June of this year he resigned from | :02:27. | :02:31.
the co`operative. There have in question as to whether he should | :02:32. | :02:34.
ever have been a councillor and chair of the Co`op bank at the same | :02:35. | :02:41.
time. You would have had to get permission to serve and to take on | :02:42. | :02:49.
the role within the Co`op bank. I think the people who granted him | :02:50. | :02:52.
permission gave him bad advice. This afternoon Paul Flowers was suspended | :02:53. | :02:57.
from the Labour Party. He was involved in the cup bank and that is | :02:58. | :03:02.
no longer the case. The police are looking at the issue. But Paul | :03:03. | :03:06.
Flowers has received some support in Bradford. He is very much loved and | :03:07. | :03:13.
add times as a counsellor we could have not got through situations | :03:14. | :03:21.
without him. In Leeds any investigations are at a very early | :03:22. | :03:26.
stage. I understand there will be no definite developments for several | :03:27. | :03:30.
days. Tonight Paul Flowers remains suspended by his church as well as | :03:31. | :03:36.
by the Labour Party. Next, has the jobs market in | :03:37. | :03:44.
Yorkshire turned a corner? In York, 200 posts have been advertised at | :03:45. | :03:48.
the new John Lewis store today. Meanwhile, ?10 million is to be | :03:49. | :03:51.
spent on derelict land behind York Railway station, in a development | :03:52. | :03:54.
which the council says will create thousands of jobs. But it follows a | :03:55. | :03:57.
rise in unemployment in the region last month. Here's Dave Edwards. | :03:58. | :04:03.
On the outskirts of York, construction is well under way. In | :04:04. | :04:06.
the spring one of the biggest names in British retail John Lewis, will | :04:07. | :04:11.
move in. 100 posts have already been filled and 200 more were advertised | :04:12. | :04:17.
this morning. The interest in the job when we advertised the 100 rolls | :04:18. | :04:23.
was fantastic. We had 500 people from the local area wanting to join | :04:24. | :04:28.
John Lewis and we hope we will have a similar number four the job | :04:29. | :04:34.
advertised today. Meanwhile in the centre of York major announcement. | :04:35. | :04:39.
This land has been derelict for years. Part of it used to be the | :04:40. | :04:45.
famous carriage works. A major employer back in its day. Plans to | :04:46. | :04:49.
develop ear and build thousands of homes and offices have been put on | :04:50. | :04:57.
hold at the height of the recession. But today the council said it would | :04:58. | :05:02.
spend ?10 million on a new bridge over the railway lines for easier | :05:03. | :05:10.
access to the site. That is expected to create thousands of jobs. We're | :05:11. | :05:15.
putting in ?10 million towards this bridge to get access to the site. So | :05:16. | :05:24.
building can now start. And those jobs will be much needed here in | :05:25. | :05:28.
Yorkshire where last week's official figures showed unemployment rose by | :05:29. | :05:35.
4000. There are now 248 thousand people in the region without a job. | :05:36. | :05:39.
It is hoped the announcements today will help that figure start to fall. | :05:40. | :05:44.
Later on Look North. We're talking driving and distractions. | :05:45. | :05:52.
A massive 42,000 drivers in Yorkshire have points on their | :05:53. | :05:56.
licence for being distracted at the wheel. I find out what happened in a | :05:57. | :06:01.
car simulator when you take your eyes off the road. | :06:02. | :06:04.
Former Rotherham MP Denis MacShane has admitted to making false expense | :06:05. | :06:10.
claims of nearly ?13,000. MacShane, who's also the former Europe | :06:11. | :06:13.
Minister, pleaded guilty to one charge of false accounting at the | :06:14. | :06:16.
Old Bailey in London. Our political reporter James Vincent joins us now | :06:17. | :06:20.
from Sheffield. James, what exactly did he do? Well Denis Macshane is | :06:21. | :06:28.
the hype profile former MP caught up in the expenses scandal. He was | :06:29. | :06:35.
rather MP. And he was Europe Minister for three years under Tony | :06:36. | :06:41.
Blair. It is his work in Europe that got him into trouble. 19 fake | :06:42. | :06:47.
invoices submitted asking for money for research and translation. They | :06:48. | :06:54.
were from a company controlled by Denis Macshane. The signatures of | :06:55. | :06:58.
the managers on those receipts were not genuine. A total of ?13,000 was | :06:59. | :07:06.
claimed. Denis Macshane 20 did not personally profit from any of that | :07:07. | :07:10.
but today he pleaded guilty to the one charge of false accounting. What | :07:11. | :07:17.
is the timeline from here? Well he will not be speaking to the media | :07:18. | :07:21.
about his plea this morning but he has been quite high profile in the | :07:22. | :07:25.
last four years. In the Guardian he broke in 2009 that the expenses | :07:26. | :07:30.
scandal would be seen as a wonderful moment of British fiddling. I guess | :07:31. | :07:34.
today his moment finally came and he will be back in court on the 19th of | :07:35. | :07:39.
December when he and his former constituents will find out his | :07:40. | :07:45.
sentence. The Independent Police Complaints | :07:46. | :07:47.
Commission is considering launching a formal investigation into the role | :07:48. | :07:50.
the Metropolitan Police Commissioner played on the day of the | :07:51. | :07:53.
Hillsborough disaster. Sir Bernard Hogan`Howe was then working for | :07:54. | :07:56.
South Yorkshire Police and on duty at Sheffield Boys' Club where | :07:57. | :07:59.
relatives and friends of those missing were waiting for news. It's | :08:00. | :08:03.
thought the investigation relates to the family of a 14`year`old boy | :08:04. | :08:07.
being given false hope when his name was on a list of survivors read out | :08:08. | :08:11.
by a police officer. The boy had in fact died. | :08:12. | :08:15.
A West Yorkshire town has today become the first place in the north | :08:16. | :08:18.
of England where retailers have agreed to stop selling | :08:19. | :08:20.
super`strength alcohol. Shop owners in Normanton near Wakefield have | :08:21. | :08:23.
signed up to the Reducing the Strength campaign, to try to combat | :08:24. | :08:27.
anti`social behaviour. Lager, beers and ciders that contain more than | :08:28. | :08:33.
6.5% alcohol will no longer be sold. If it's successful, the scheme could | :08:34. | :08:38.
be extended to other areas. Drivers who want to park in Leeds | :08:39. | :08:41.
city centre on evenings and Sundays will have to pay from today. A two | :08:42. | :08:45.
pound flat rate for evenings has been brought in. On Sundays it'll | :08:46. | :08:49.
cost four pounds for the day, or a pound for up to four hours. The | :08:50. | :08:53.
council says it knows the changes won't be popular, but it needs to | :08:54. | :08:56.
keep traffic moving and encourage people to make the most of public | :08:57. | :09:00.
transport. Schoolchildren in Sheffield have | :09:01. | :09:02.
taken part in a protest over possible library closures. Pupils at | :09:03. | :09:09.
Lydgit Junior School campaigned outside Broomhill library this | :09:10. | :09:14.
morning. It's one of the libraries which is threatened with closure, as | :09:15. | :09:18.
Sheffield City Council aims to save ?1.6 million. The council has urged | :09:19. | :09:21.
people to take part in the ongoing consultation into the future of | :09:22. | :09:26.
libraries. Those at the school say they're at risk of losing a valuable | :09:27. | :09:34.
resource. It is something that we use and | :09:35. | :09:41.
love. It may discourage some of us from reading because it is difficult | :09:42. | :09:45.
to get books. We constantly talk about the value of reading for | :09:46. | :09:49.
children and the libraries in terms of resources. To have it here is | :09:50. | :09:56.
crucial and once it has gone it is something we probably will boost for | :09:57. | :10:02.
ever. `` lose for ever. Road safety charity Brake have today | :10:03. | :10:05.
called for drivers to resist the temptation to use their phones while | :10:06. | :10:08.
driving. The charity, based in Huddersfield, has found that 42,000 | :10:09. | :10:11.
people in Yorkshire have got points on their licences for using their | :10:12. | :10:14.
mobiles at the wheel or being otherwise distracted, for example | :10:15. | :10:17.
eating, drinking or tuning the radio. By far the greatest number of | :10:18. | :10:20.
offenders in our region are in Sheffield, where 10,500 drivers have | :10:21. | :10:23.
been given points after getting caught not giving their full | :10:24. | :10:26.
attention to the road. In second place is Leeds with more than 6,500 | :10:27. | :10:29.
drivers being penalised for distracted driving. And Bradford | :10:30. | :10:32.
isn't far behind with just over 6,000. Ian White has the story. | :10:33. | :10:42.
Fire crews work to free a motorist trapped inside a car after a | :10:43. | :10:48.
collision. Fortunately it is just a training exercise but is something | :10:49. | :10:52.
that they do for real far too often. Motorists distracted but we will as | :10:53. | :10:57.
a major cause of crashes and mobile phones are often to blame. Using the | :10:58. | :11:02.
mobile phone distracts you for just a few minutes. The modern car will | :11:03. | :11:06.
have gone a very long way in that time. It ends in devastation for the | :11:07. | :11:13.
family and the individual concerned. 42,000 motorists in Yorkshire alone | :11:14. | :11:17.
have points on their licences for being distracted at the wheel. Now | :11:18. | :11:26.
the charity Brake is calling for a total ban on mobile phones while | :11:27. | :11:29.
driving. We would prefer people to turn their mobile phone off. To see | :11:30. | :11:35.
how dangerous using a mobile phone at the wheel is I would to the car | :11:36. | :11:40.
simulator at Leeds University to see how my driving changed. You are | :11:41. | :11:46.
being careful to look at the road every so often. So you're switching | :11:47. | :11:50.
your glands from the phone back to the road. `` your glands. That is | :11:51. | :11:57.
being safety conscious, more so than someone might do in real life. But | :11:58. | :12:04.
you are going quite fast. Now you're into lanes. There is no doubt | :12:05. | :12:08.
driving like could lead to serious collision. So would drivers in the | :12:09. | :12:15.
lock their mobile phone in their blood? You're having a laugh. | :12:16. | :12:19.
Really? Locked in the boot of the card? No. I think it is a good idea | :12:20. | :12:24.
because I put my bag on the back seat with my phone in it and then I | :12:25. | :12:30.
cannot reach it. You need it in case of emergency. But I do not answer | :12:31. | :12:35.
when driving. Many drivers still need to be convinced. But using your | :12:36. | :12:39.
phone while driving is illegal and could end in tragedy. | :12:40. | :12:47.
Before seven o'clock, we'll have your weekend sport. And he's left | :12:48. | :12:59.
his Funky Moped in the Midlands and he's headed North! Comedian Jasper | :13:00. | :13:02.
Carrott will be in our studio ahead of a brand new tour. | :13:03. | :13:10.
And we get a rare chat with the Arctic Monkeys ahead of their | :13:11. | :13:23.
hometown gig in Sheffield tonight. Now for the sport, here's Tanya. | :13:24. | :13:31.
There is a suggestion that the former hero down at Elland Road | :13:32. | :13:38.
could be involved? Well the United have described it as a derisory | :13:39. | :13:47.
offer. Lucas might be was meant to be heading some kind of consortium | :13:48. | :13:53.
to buy them. He is a legend at Elland Road. We have heard nothing | :13:54. | :14:01.
from Lucas. The club said he did not mention anything when he was over a | :14:02. | :14:11.
couple of weeks ago. Adam Pearson, who knows him well, has distanced | :14:12. | :14:18.
himself from the matter. I spoke to the leader of Leeds council today | :14:19. | :14:24.
and like any lead United fan he once to know more. Anything headed up by | :14:25. | :14:32.
Lucas, who is a legend, anyone who talks about working with the | :14:33. | :14:38.
supporters trust, you have to be interested in that. We all want more | :14:39. | :14:44.
detail. So ( for all international duties meant that just the League | :14:45. | :14:49.
one Ansley two sides were in action at the weekend. Hansen and Wells, a | :14:50. | :14:59.
vintage strike partnership. Yesterday they got together against | :15:00. | :15:12.
Coventry. For the hat`trick, this penalty came after the bantams fell | :15:13. | :15:20.
behind again. Wells finished from the spot. They bounced just above | :15:21. | :15:27.
rather, who beat Stevenage. In the second half quart Davis outmuscled | :15:28. | :15:32.
the keeper to make it two points. Michael O'Connor saved the best to | :15:33. | :15:40.
last. Colour as the defending from Sheffield United gifted the lead. No | :15:41. | :15:53.
such problems for Chesterfield who are joint top of league one. Oliver | :15:54. | :16:01.
Banks put them ahead at Torquay. And Ryan Bowman got on the end of Luke | :16:02. | :16:04.
O'Neill's cross to put your in front against Plymouth. But they threw | :16:05. | :16:10.
away the lead later with some tentative defending and finished | :16:11. | :16:24.
with the scores equal. He's not old enough to drive a car | :16:25. | :16:28.
on the roads, but he is driving them at around 160 miles per hour on the | :16:29. | :16:32.
race track! 16`year`old Alex Gill from Womersley fits in race driving | :16:33. | :16:35.
around his A`levels. But while his talent and dedication can't be | :16:36. | :16:37.
questioned, there's another ingredient Alex needs if he's to | :16:38. | :16:41.
reach the top of his sport. Ian Bucknell reports. | :16:42. | :16:47.
The sun comes up over Rockingham Raceway in Northampton and the most | :16:48. | :16:52.
important day of Alex Gill's driving career. He is a reigning British | :16:53. | :16:57.
karting champion but this is just the second time that he has raced | :16:58. | :17:03.
cars. I'm quite nervous. I just have to make sure that the car is ready. | :17:04. | :17:09.
Whilst Alex gets ready for the race, his dad Steve fears it could be his | :17:10. | :17:15.
last. It costs ?150,000 to support a driver through a season. Those | :17:16. | :17:21.
sponsors are vital. He knows if I do not managed to get him, shall | :17:22. | :17:25.
partners before March is probably where it ends. It is not a nice | :17:26. | :17:32.
situation but it is a fact of life. Alex is taking part in the formula | :17:33. | :17:40.
Renault Autumn cup. His mother cannot bear to match `` to watch. If | :17:41. | :17:46.
I sit in a certain spot and he does not do well, I sit somewhere else. | :17:47. | :17:53.
We do have superstitions. Alex steadily improved his time is in | :17:54. | :17:57.
spite of gearbox problems. But at the start of the race he lost second | :17:58. | :18:02.
place in the grid. That is inexperienced. But he soon starts to | :18:03. | :18:07.
pick off cars in front of him and that is talent. Alex finishes | :18:08. | :18:13.
second. His dad is pleased but also frustrated knowing that his son may | :18:14. | :18:16.
not get the chance to fulfil his potential. He has 10% of the budget | :18:17. | :18:25.
of the people he is racing against and so what he has got, I have to | :18:26. | :18:31.
back it to the last bit that I can. Alex has achieved a lot in his short | :18:32. | :18:36.
career. Whether his progress continues may depend more on money | :18:37. | :18:49.
than motor racing ability. I am slightly in all of the next | :18:50. | :19:13.
guess! `` in awe of the next guest. He is one of the's best`known | :19:14. | :19:19.
comedians. He is now going back on the road. It is good to see you. We | :19:20. | :19:27.
are going to go back in time a little bit. Remember that white | :19:28. | :19:37.
suit. You rose to fame in 1975 with the single Funky Moped. Let's have a | :19:38. | :19:41.
look at you in action on Top of the Pops. | :19:42. | :19:58.
Sorry to make you cringe! You rose to fame with that single. It was the | :19:59. | :20:07.
B`side. What can you tell us about that? It was banned by the BBC. I'm | :20:08. | :20:14.
the only person that I know in Britain who had a record banned by | :20:15. | :20:22.
the BBC, and an OBEs! But it was the comedy that made your name. I sent | :20:23. | :20:29.
myself up doing Top of the Pops because I should never have been | :20:30. | :20:34.
there, really. I was in the folk scene and they thought it was | :20:35. | :20:40.
hysterical. But things have moved on a bit since then. I remember you in | :20:41. | :20:52.
the 1980s very well, shows like Carrott's Lib and Carrott's | :20:53. | :21:05.
Commercial Breakdown. Saturday nights in the 1980s, that meant you. | :21:06. | :21:12.
It was like then. It was real pressure. I was doing 40 minute | :21:13. | :21:17.
shows and all the material was written in the week. It is not as if | :21:18. | :21:22.
you had rehearsed it anywhere and you had to go straight to air. It | :21:23. | :21:30.
really was pressure but a fantastic experience. What about your new | :21:31. | :21:38.
material? There are so many comics around now. None of them are old | :21:39. | :21:42.
enough to do material about grandchildren getting old, looking | :21:43. | :21:50.
forward to death! Let us have a look. | :21:51. | :21:57.
I cannot get rid of them. I am cleaning up after them, my arm up | :21:58. | :22:03.
the EU banned because Buzz Lightyear has gone swimming! Three hours solid | :22:04. | :22:15.
playing piggyback. I fell off! What you think about new comics? | :22:16. | :22:19.
They are very good. The good thing about comedy now is that whatever | :22:20. | :22:25.
you like, you can get it. Stand`up comedy used to be ten minutes on the | :22:26. | :22:33.
Cilla Black show. I tend to do what I have always done, no bad language, | :22:34. | :22:42.
keep it clean. And when I do the show in Wakefield in February, that | :22:43. | :23:00.
the theatre Royal! Wonderful people. I am coming with a show called | :23:01. | :23:17.
stand`up and rock. We could talk to you for hours, but you for hours, | :23:18. | :23:22.
but your band! Now they're one of the biggest bands | :23:23. | :23:26.
in the world, and can you believe it's been over ten years since they | :23:27. | :23:29.
formed in their native High Green on the outskirts of Sheffield? Well, | :23:30. | :23:32.
five number one albums later, they're back in their hometown to | :23:33. | :23:35.
play Sheffield Arena. The original date had to be cancelled because of | :23:36. | :23:39.
illness. But our man Shamir Masri has been given exclusive access to | :23:40. | :23:43.
catch up with a couple of the band. Having yet again reached the number | :23:44. | :23:51.
one spot with their latest album, the Arctic Monkeys are undoubtedly | :23:52. | :23:55.
one of the most successful bands in the world. | :23:56. | :24:05.
It is amazing that people still like us. We never expected all of our | :24:06. | :24:13.
albums to be successful. You pretend it is not bothered `` you're not | :24:14. | :24:19.
bothered whether it gets to number one. But when it does, it is | :24:20. | :24:26.
exciting. There are back with a homecoming gig that had to be | :24:27. | :24:30.
cancelled when the lead singer picked up a virus. We had to wait | :24:31. | :24:46.
until Disney on ice was over! The family have all got ice skate! | :24:47. | :24:53.
Tonight fans of their music will be packed into the venue for their | :24:54. | :24:57.
first Sheffield gig in over two years. I think we have killed up a | :24:58. | :25:06.
different fan base. `` D. `` built up. I think half of the arena will | :25:07. | :25:17.
be related to us! It has been ten years since their first ever gig. It | :25:18. | :25:24.
was a massive day for us. The biggest night of our lives. We went | :25:25. | :25:30.
on at about six o'clock! I remember it well. Do not be surprised if they | :25:31. | :25:35.
are still going strong in another decade. | :25:36. | :25:53.
Great to get them on the show. We do start with an ice warning for | :25:54. | :26:01.
tonight. There will be a widespread frost as well. Other than that | :26:02. | :26:09.
tomorrow will be wrapped up warm day with lots of sunshine. This system | :26:10. | :26:16.
will bring rain tomorrow night. Perhaps preceded by some sleet and | :26:17. | :26:22.
snow over the Pennines. Then it is brighter on Wednesday afternoon. | :26:23. | :26:27.
Much colder air is coming from the North. But many of the showers will | :26:28. | :26:38.
miss this region. But there's still a lot dampness around. The blisters | :26:39. | :26:47.
will be out. Just the odd chance of an isolated flurry of snow. The sun | :26:48. | :26:59.
will rise in the morning at 7:40am. So watch out first thing for frost | :27:00. | :27:06.
and ice on the roads. Otherwise it is clear blue skies for many. You | :27:07. | :27:10.
just might see some wintry showers on the coastal strip. Cold for most | :27:11. | :27:24.
of us but a lovely bright sunny day. Around four or five degrees. Rain at | :27:25. | :27:36.
first on Wednesday, brighter later. Then scattered showers on Thursday. | :27:37. | :27:42.
Thank you to everyone who helped the region raised over 1.8 million | :27:43. | :27:46.
pounds. 'We wanna do | :27:47. | :28:02.
