Welcome to Monday's Look North. On the programme tonight: Could Leeds | :00:00. | :00:11.
Bradford Airport be moved? Claims that the Leeds region could | :00:12. | :00:14.
have a booming economy if the airport was close to motorway | :00:15. | :00:22.
networks and a high`speed rail link. Is it good enough for Yorkshire to | :00:23. | :00:26.
have a small airport, when there is clearly going to We'll hear from an | :00:27. | :00:30.
expert who says it's a crazy idea. Be growth? | :00:31. | :00:33.
Also tonight: Police search for a missing girl. Megan Robert hasn't | :00:34. | :00:36.
been seen since a night out in York five days ago. | :00:37. | :00:40.
The professional rugby players using sport to turn young people away from | :00:41. | :00:48.
crime. And, the Huddersfield girl whose | :00:49. | :00:51.
performance on The Voice had the judges in a spin. | :00:52. | :01:02.
This was the result of an apparent tornado on Saturday afternoon. Join | :01:03. | :01:05.
me for the details coming up shortly. | :01:06. | :01:11.
First tonight, claims that Leeds would get a massive boost to its | :01:12. | :01:16.
economy if the airport had better links to motorways and the rail | :01:17. | :01:21.
network. It coincides with a report out today which looks at job | :01:22. | :01:23.
creation, and reveals a vast difference in the economic | :01:24. | :01:26.
performance of two of our biggest cities. The Centre For Cities | :01:27. | :01:33.
Research suggests Leeds is outperforming Sheffield when it | :01:34. | :01:35.
comes to creating jobs in the private sector. More than 4,000 jobs | :01:36. | :01:41.
were created between 2010 and 2012. In Sheffield, there was actually a | :01:42. | :01:44.
fall in private sector jobs. In the same time period, 7,500 jobs were | :01:45. | :01:51.
lost. In terms of the rest of the country, Leeds is placed ninth in a | :01:52. | :01:54.
list of cities ranked according to private sector job growth. Sheffield | :01:55. | :01:57.
is ranked 61st, with only two cities losing more private sector jobs. | :01:58. | :02:00.
Here's our business correspondent Danni Hewson. | :02:01. | :02:12.
When it comes to making money, Leeds is flying high. The combined forces | :02:13. | :02:19.
of West Yorkshire and York have created an economy forfend that of | :02:20. | :02:24.
the Manchester region. When it comes to status, this side is losing out. | :02:25. | :02:30.
Some say it is because we lack a Premier league football team, others | :02:31. | :02:34.
point to the sky and asked if it is the size and location of the | :02:35. | :02:38.
airport. Would we be better served if it was moved closer to motorways | :02:39. | :02:45.
and rail? Is it good enough for Yorkshire to have a small airport | :02:46. | :02:55.
when there is clearly going to be growth? We have to be extremely | :02:56. | :02:58.
ambitious and start looking at the potential of high`speed rail to | :02:59. | :03:00.
unlock the aviation growth. This airport attracted record passengers | :03:01. | :03:02.
last year but the figures are nowhere near those seen by | :03:03. | :03:05.
Manchester. Is it in the wrong place, or is the | :03:06. | :03:11.
arts are more straightforward? As part of our plan, we have indicated | :03:12. | :03:16.
a rail link is the most important element of allowing passengers to | :03:17. | :03:21.
connect more easily and faster and in larger numbers. | :03:22. | :03:28.
At the heart of the flourishing economy is the burgeoning private | :03:29. | :03:32.
sector, seeing projects like this and a new shopping centre bring new | :03:33. | :03:38.
jobs. A city like Leeds had a lot of potential. You can see by the | :03:39. | :03:43.
opening of Trinity Leeds, what impact it has had, bringing a real | :03:44. | :03:49.
buzz to the place. Sheffield doesn't fare as well. According to one South | :03:50. | :03:58.
Yorkshire businessmen, this doesn't tell the whole story. The economy is | :03:59. | :04:02.
based heavily on manufacturing which take longer to come to the wicket. | :04:03. | :04:07.
We would like to think Sheffield is more manufacturing based. | :04:08. | :04:10.
Those jobs take longer to create because of training. Jobs are easier | :04:11. | :04:15.
to create in the service sector but easier to lose. As they tell of two | :04:16. | :04:20.
cities, it is far from straightforward. | :04:21. | :04:25.
`` a tale of. Joining us from Sheffield now is | :04:26. | :04:28.
Gordon Dabinett, a professor for Regional Studies at Sheffield | :04:29. | :04:31.
University. Is moving an airport a good idea? | :04:32. | :04:35.
I do not believe that is a solution to the problem really. It needs to | :04:36. | :04:41.
be put into context. First, the National aviation policy. You see a | :04:42. | :04:45.
restructuring around hobs rather than regional airports. `` hubs. Any | :04:46. | :04:55.
decision to invest heavily has to be put in that context. Over the last | :04:56. | :05:01.
few years, large sums of investment are being made to connect existing | :05:02. | :05:05.
airports which serve the region very well into the road and rail network. | :05:06. | :05:12.
Road investment, and into the rail network to connect Manchester. Do | :05:13. | :05:17.
those league tables say something about the difference between | :05:18. | :05:21.
Sheffield and Leeds? Or do they send us down a road which is not true? | :05:22. | :05:27.
The tables aren't useful, they are a static picture. It is not surprising | :05:28. | :05:33.
Leeds and Sheffield have a performance which is different. | :05:34. | :05:38.
Leeds has a long`standing record around commercial and financial | :05:39. | :05:43.
services. When you have a global and national economy beginning to grow | :05:44. | :05:48.
on the back of industry is well represented in Leeds, you might see | :05:49. | :05:53.
this picture. The comment on manufacturing jobs is very real. I | :05:54. | :05:59.
am not concerned with that snapshot. But we cannot be complacent. Those | :06:00. | :06:05.
tables fail to hide true comparisons between two areas, looking at | :06:06. | :06:11.
Bristol, Aberdeen, high`growth areas, comparing against those, that | :06:12. | :06:15.
might tell us more about what is happening. | :06:16. | :06:21.
How can cities improve economically in the current climate? They have | :06:22. | :06:27.
got to invest in infrastructure. They have got to invest in training | :06:28. | :06:32.
to get the skill ballots right. And making city 's vibrant, keeping | :06:33. | :06:38.
cultural activities and that sense of why we choose to live in cities | :06:39. | :06:41.
still being an attractive offer. Concern is growing in York for the | :06:42. | :06:48.
welfare of a 20`year`old student who hasn't been seen for the past four | :06:49. | :06:52.
days. Megan Roberts was last seen in the early hours of Thursday morning, | :06:53. | :06:55.
at a city centre pub where she'd gone with friends for a night out. | :06:56. | :06:59.
Our crime correspondent John Cundy is outside York Police Station with | :07:00. | :07:00.
the latest. Megan Roberts was originally from | :07:01. | :07:13.
Wetherby but has been living in the Clifton area of York, a student at | :07:14. | :07:19.
the York St John University. She was with a group of university friends | :07:20. | :07:26.
on a night out, dressed in a cream knee`length dress with large | :07:27. | :07:32.
flowers, wearing black shoes. She is five, with long, dark brown hair. | :07:33. | :07:37.
She hasn't been seen since she left her friends at 2am in that pub, in | :07:38. | :07:45.
George Hudson Street in the city centre. Nothing has been heard from | :07:46. | :07:49.
her. Police say it is out of character. The club have given | :07:50. | :07:56.
police CCTV footage of the scenes at the pub last Wednesday night and | :07:57. | :07:59.
early Thursday morning. A short time ago, North Yorkshire Police | :08:00. | :08:05.
explained how Megan's mother raised the alarm at 8:30am today. | :08:06. | :08:13.
Reinhardt Hamman raised the alarm after one of her friends contacted | :08:14. | :08:19.
her to seek she hadn't seemed Megan since early Thursday morning. That | :08:20. | :08:23.
is when her mum raised the alarm with North Yorkshire Police. We are | :08:24. | :08:27.
speaking with friends to see what went on in the early hours of | :08:28. | :08:30.
Thursday morning and over the weekend. | :08:31. | :08:36.
The university has issued a statement saying, our thoughts are | :08:37. | :08:40.
with the family and friends at this distressing time. We are doing all | :08:41. | :08:44.
we can to help the police and to try to support Megan's students. Police | :08:45. | :08:51.
say they don't suspect any criminal activity at this stage but they are | :08:52. | :08:55.
clearly very concerned for the welfare of Megan Roberts. That is | :08:56. | :08:57.
situation York tonight. Later on Look North: On Holocaust | :08:58. | :09:04.
memorial day, we hear from the York woman who fled from the Nazis as a | :09:05. | :09:06.
child. I was picking up vibes of terrible | :09:07. | :09:11.
nerves. They tried to smuggle out money on me, I found out later. | :09:12. | :09:15.
A new facility where police can take people who've been detained under | :09:16. | :09:21.
the Mental Health Act has opened in North Yorkshire today. The so`called | :09:22. | :09:24.
"place of safety" is based at Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough, and | :09:25. | :09:27.
means vulnerable patients will no longer be held in police cells. | :09:28. | :09:32.
Sheffield Labour MP Meg Munn has announced she's stepping down at the | :09:33. | :09:37.
next election. She'll have been the MP for Heeley for 14 years by the | :09:38. | :09:43.
time of the election next year. Meg Munn was the Minister For Women And | :09:44. | :09:46.
Equality, and introduced Civil Partnerships in December 2005. She's | :09:47. | :09:49.
told the BBC that she believes the time will be right to use her | :09:50. | :09:53.
experience and energy to take on new challenges. | :09:54. | :09:54.
People living near Settle are being asked to look out for a missing | :09:55. | :09:59.
eagle. Nikita is a Steller's Sea Eagle, and has an eight`foot | :10:00. | :10:02.
wingspan. She disappeared from Settle on Saturday while being | :10:03. | :10:05.
exercised. She's not believed to be a danger to the public, but anyone | :10:06. | :10:09.
who spots her is asked to call North Yorkshire Police. | :10:10. | :10:11.
Eric Clapton is going to perform in Leeds, it was announced today. He'll | :10:12. | :10:18.
be at the city's new First Direct Arena on 22nd June. It's one of only | :10:19. | :10:23.
two UK dates, the other is in Glasgow. Tickets will go on sale on | :10:24. | :10:24.
Friday. Victims of the Holocaust are being | :10:25. | :10:33.
remembered across Yorkshire today, with a series of events around the | :10:34. | :10:37.
theme of a journey of remembrance. The day is held on the date of the | :10:38. | :10:41.
liberation of the Auschwitz Birkenau concentration camp, which was 69 | :10:42. | :10:44.
years ago. Edith Kurcz, who lives in York, fled Austria with her family | :10:45. | :10:48.
in 1938. But many of the relatives she left behind perished. This | :10:49. | :10:51.
report contains some images you may find distressing. | :10:52. | :11:10.
We lost both the flat and his job. There was no question of dithering | :11:11. | :11:18.
whether it was safe to stay, because there was nothing to stay for. We | :11:19. | :11:20.
had no income and no place to live. I found it a terrible upheaval. I | :11:21. | :11:37.
started bedwetting, crying. I didn't understand what was going on and | :11:38. | :11:40.
nobody explained it to me. I don't think a two`year`old could | :11:41. | :11:44.
understand, but nobody tried either. I was picking up vibes of terrible | :11:45. | :11:50.
nerves. They tried to smuggle out money on me, I found out later. | :11:51. | :11:56.
Going on the border was not much fun. They were nervous that the | :11:57. | :12:05.
guards would find this. So, I think I picked up on all that. | :12:06. | :12:17.
My father had a big family in Hungary. They all got killed. | :12:18. | :12:25.
Actually in Auschwitz, in 1944, which somehow seems, because it was | :12:26. | :12:28.
so close to the end of the war, it seems to me even more tragic. | :12:29. | :12:39.
It is really quite easy to drum up hatred, and start something that | :12:40. | :12:49.
then escalates terribly. Democracy and peace and freedom is a very | :12:50. | :12:53.
precious thing, and it is very easy to not remember that. And, to stand | :12:54. | :13:00.
up to hatred when you see it. Because, in Germany, there were lots | :13:01. | :13:04.
of people who did not approve of Hitler but did not say so early. By | :13:05. | :13:07.
the time they would have been ready to say so, it was too late. | :13:08. | :13:16.
Before seven o'clock: For the first time in years, both Sheffield clubs | :13:17. | :13:23.
are in the last round of the FA Cup. And we're joined by the Huddersfield | :13:24. | :13:26.
singer who's got approval from none other than Sir Tom Jones. | :13:27. | :13:35.
A project in Keighley which uses sport to keep young people away from | :13:36. | :13:41.
crime has been hailed a big success. 37 youngsters in the town are now | :13:42. | :13:44.
being trained and mentored by professional rugby players, and | :13:45. | :13:47.
those who take part have returned to school and stayed out of trouble. | :13:48. | :13:49.
Olivia Richwald reports. It is a freezing cold day, but there | :13:50. | :14:02.
is no escaping training here. Professional players Buster and | :14:03. | :14:04.
Brendan keep these teenagers in line. One of them is 15`year`old | :14:05. | :14:11.
Callum Sloan. I wasn't in school that much. They have got me back in | :14:12. | :14:15.
school. I used to be a bad kid at the start. Now, I am not. Why do you | :14:16. | :14:21.
think that is? They took me off the streets, and talked to me. The | :14:22. | :14:24.
players`turned`youth workers pass on more than sports skills. | :14:25. | :14:30.
We teach them to respect their parents, teachers. Everyday life as | :14:31. | :14:34.
well, going out to work and earn money. A lot of these lads have hard | :14:35. | :14:40.
backgrounds, broken homes. We try to give them a different way of life. | :14:41. | :14:45.
The youngsters also go fishing, metal detecting and kite flying. | :14:46. | :14:49.
Simple and peaceful hobbies to help them concentrate, and think about | :14:50. | :14:54.
others. We have seen a greater sense of | :14:55. | :14:58.
responsibility from them, a lot more empathy, so they now understand how | :14:59. | :15:01.
their behaviour, good or bad, impacts on other people. | :15:02. | :15:06.
The project isn't cheap. ?125,000 a year in Keighley alone, ?3,500 per | :15:07. | :15:13.
person. But the organisers say it is good value for money. Each time a | :15:14. | :15:20.
person enters the criminal justice system, it costs ?8,000, and the | :15:21. | :15:23.
cost for just one year is ?65,000 for a young person. The Police | :15:24. | :15:31.
Commissioner is setting up a fund, and says it should be used to fund | :15:32. | :15:34.
projects like this. I am always looking at ways where we | :15:35. | :15:38.
can work together to put on youth `based initiatives that help divert | :15:39. | :15:41.
them away from crime and issues around criminality. | :15:42. | :15:44.
These teenagers entered the scheme 18 months ago and, since then, not | :15:45. | :15:48.
one has been back in trouble with the police. | :15:49. | :15:57.
Football, and then there were two! Both from Sheffield: Wednesday and | :15:58. | :16:05.
United carry our FA Cup banner into round five. Huddersfield blew their | :16:06. | :16:09.
chance, losing at home to Charlton. But we start with Sheffield | :16:10. | :16:12.
Wednesday, our form team. They confirmed Stuart Gray, as their | :16:13. | :16:15.
permanent manager and how richly he deserved it. | :16:16. | :16:23.
A big influence on this game in every way. The first goal for him in | :16:24. | :16:30.
the club gave Wednesday the lead. The second true chance of USA from | :16:31. | :16:35.
the fans after their new signing scored. Rochdale scored a stunner. | :16:36. | :16:45.
Rose, 25 yards out, will never hit a better goal. But, as so often | :16:46. | :16:50.
happens in football, delight turned to despair. A sending off for this | :16:51. | :16:55.
tickled rather than a tackle for a second bookable offence. No doubt, | :16:56. | :17:00.
after the Wednesday team spirit, then went on to win. New belief | :17:01. | :17:07.
under Nigel Clough. A goal on 30 minutes. A cross by | :17:08. | :17:12.
Maguire, Porter with a superb finish. Nigel Clough felt this | :17:13. | :17:18.
incident was a crucial moment. Doyle kicked out on David. The referee got | :17:19. | :17:24.
a clear view and his opinion, a red card. United with ten men thought | :17:25. | :17:30.
they had a penalty here. Ryan Flynn with superb skills, Hughes clearly | :17:31. | :17:35.
brought him down. No penalty. That seemed harsh. The fourth official | :17:36. | :17:40.
got an ear from Nigel Clough. Andrei Marriner had to calm him down. | :17:41. | :17:47.
Andrei, says Nigel Clough, but the penalty was long gone. You know what | :17:48. | :17:51.
happened next. An equaliser by Fulham. And then the miss of the | :17:52. | :18:01.
season. What did Harry Matt Kola Shroot `` oh, dear. We were | :18:02. | :18:10.
disappointed at half`time. I didn't think we were good enough on the | :18:11. | :18:14.
ball with our passing. The second half, even with ten men, that | :18:15. | :18:18.
improved dramatically. We were at least worthy of a draw. Huddersfield | :18:19. | :18:22.
had enough chances to see of Charlton. After this mess, there | :18:23. | :18:29.
were are the chances in the second. Charlton had virtually one chance in | :18:30. | :18:35.
the match. This was scored by Church. Huddersfield were | :18:36. | :18:36.
disappointing. Here's the draw for the fifth round | :18:37. | :18:41.
of the FA Cup. With the FA Cup taking centre stage, | :18:42. | :18:51.
there weren't many League games taking place. Four of our teams were | :18:52. | :18:55.
in action, though. And it was a happy return for a Doncaster | :18:56. | :19:01.
favourite. Here's Tanya. Billy Sharp said he came back to | :19:02. | :19:05.
play and score goals. Against Blackpool, he did just that, with | :19:06. | :19:12.
the faintest of touches. Earning his side a point. For the room twice | :19:13. | :19:18.
came from behind to get a draw. And one goal from the spot. It finished | :19:19. | :19:26.
2`2. Chesterfield are back in the | :19:27. | :19:30.
automatic promotion places after a win at Northampton. The conditions | :19:31. | :19:37.
were hardly conducive to playing the beautiful game but despite the mud, | :19:38. | :19:44.
this chip was delightful. They move up to second in league two. York | :19:45. | :19:49.
city didn't have too far to travel but it wasn't a happy trip to | :19:50. | :19:52.
Hartlepool. The Football Association says it'll | :19:53. | :19:57.
read the referee's report before taking any action against a former | :19:58. | :20:00.
Sheffield United player who confronted fans after being sent | :20:01. | :20:03.
off. Karl Colley, who's from Sheffield, has been sacked as | :20:04. | :20:05.
captain of non`league Goole, after storming into a stand and appearing | :20:06. | :20:09.
to throw a punch at a supporter on Saturday, in a home game against | :20:10. | :20:12.
Coalville Town. Manager David Holdsworth has also left the club. | :20:13. | :20:17.
Ice hockey now. It's been a good weekend for Sheffield Steelers. | :20:18. | :20:22.
Steven Gertzen led the charge for the Steelers on Saturday night, with | :20:23. | :20:25.
an inspired performance against the Nottingham Panthers. He scored | :20:26. | :20:28.
twice, as the Steelers came from behind to beat their arch enemy | :20:29. | :20:31.
Nottingham 5`2 on Saturday. Then they beat Coventry 6`4 on Sunday, to | :20:32. | :20:33.
move to second place in the league. A rower from Northallerton has won a | :20:34. | :20:40.
3,000`mile race across the Atlantic Ocean. Dan Howie and his rowing | :20:41. | :20:46.
partner Will North set off from the Canary Islands for Antigua in | :20:47. | :20:49.
December. They completed the row in 53 days, nine hours and 30 minutes. | :20:50. | :20:54.
If you're a fan of the BBC's singing talent competition The Voice, you | :20:55. | :21:00.
may already have heard of our next guest. Georgia Harrup from | :21:01. | :21:02.
Huddersfield feared the worst when she sang her heart out on Saturday | :21:03. | :21:09.
night. She very nearly got to the end of her song, Ray Charles' | :21:10. | :21:12.
Hallelujah I Love Him So, when, in the last second, Tom Jones hit his | :21:13. | :21:17.
button. We'll find out more about Georgia in a moment. But, first, | :21:18. | :21:20.
here's how she got through her audition. | :21:21. | :21:28.
I really want to be known for me, my voice and my sound. I am ready to | :21:29. | :21:32.
show the world who I am and what I am made of. | :21:33. | :21:49.
# Let me tell you about a boy I know. He is my baby. | :21:50. | :22:04.
# Every morning he brings me coffee. # I just love him so. | :22:05. | :22:16.
The tension, I was watching that, it was really at the last moment. What | :22:17. | :22:26.
was going through your head? I didn't think anyone was going to | :22:27. | :22:30.
turn. I was enjoying the performance, singing it to the | :22:31. | :22:36.
audience. In the moment. I looked up and realised his light was on and he | :22:37. | :22:41.
was looking at me. He turned! Really unexpected. Were you happy? | :22:42. | :22:50.
Definitely. He is a legend. Music runs in your family. My dad was in a | :22:51. | :22:55.
band, they supported Jimi Hendrix and Manfred Mann. | :22:56. | :23:02.
And a cousin? Yes! I am related to Adele. The Grammy award winning | :23:03. | :23:10.
Adele. She is your cousin. That is amazing. But you are not really in | :23:11. | :23:15.
touch with each other. No, I didn't really want to pursue that, just | :23:16. | :23:24.
because I am a singer. You might end up doing a sing off together! | :23:25. | :23:32.
Why do you go for this kind of music? I love this music, I can't | :23:33. | :23:37.
help but dance to this music. I have played it since I was young. You | :23:38. | :23:46.
like Etta James. I love old school, anything vintage. You have had an | :23:47. | :23:51.
unconventional upbringing, you were home`schooled, married at 18, | :23:52. | :23:57.
divorced at 21. You have lost a huge amount of weight. I have done a lot | :23:58. | :24:03.
in a short amount of time but it has made me who I am today. Has music | :24:04. | :24:09.
helps you to change your life? I can relate to a lot of the old stories | :24:10. | :24:14.
in the music. What is Tom Jones like? He is lovely, amazing, so | :24:15. | :24:20.
friendly, really nice. Does he give you a hug? It gives you a warm fuzzy | :24:21. | :24:32.
feeling inside. Do you think you can go all the way with this? My fingers | :24:33. | :24:37.
are crossed, yes. I think you can. You have tried to be professional | :24:38. | :24:44.
before? I had some success with a dance music label. But my heart | :24:45. | :24:50.
really wasn't in it. I love this style of music. This is where I | :24:51. | :24:56.
wanted to be. How nerve racking is the experience? A little nerve | :24:57. | :25:01.
wracking, but you go into autopilot and get on with it. The battle is | :25:02. | :25:05.
next, you can't tell us what happens. I have a feeling you get | :25:06. | :25:07.
through. We had some active weather over the | :25:08. | :25:20.
weekend, this was apparently a tornado on Saturday afternoon. Quite | :25:21. | :25:25.
a bit of damage. We tried hard to find some snow. Here, over 1000 feet | :25:26. | :25:33.
up. And on top of the North York Moors. A temporary cold snap to come | :25:34. | :25:42.
on Wednesday night into Friday. The Atlantic winds are at once more. The | :25:43. | :25:50.
headline for the next 24 hours is very unsettled. Heavy showers, | :25:51. | :25:56.
frequent at times. Some winching us over the Pennines. Mainly rain and | :25:57. | :26:06.
hail `` wintriness. A few wintry showers possible | :26:07. | :26:12.
especially in the east. This cult of cloud will move south east in the | :26:13. | :26:17.
next few days. After the respite this afternoon, those showers are | :26:18. | :26:28.
coming back in, some heavy. Icy patches are possible on untreated | :26:29. | :26:32.
surfaces, three Celsius. The sun will rise at 8am. | :26:33. | :26:42.
Very unsettled, often breezy, cloudy with showers, some heavy and | :26:43. | :26:48.
frequent. Some hell and thunder. The worst confined to the top of the | :26:49. | :26:53.
hills. Hopefully there will be some bright or sunny intervals around. | :26:54. | :26:56.
Feeling quite chilly although the average for the end of January is | :26:57. | :27:02.
six degrees. It will feel fairly chilly. Some rain on Wednesday, | :27:03. | :27:12.
petering out. Thursday is colder with wintry showers. Friday, rain | :27:13. | :27:18.
possibly preceded by snow over high ground. That is the forecast. You | :27:19. | :27:25.
were a bit starstruck when you heard Georgia was coming in. What is | :27:26. | :27:29.
Will.I.am like? He is great. | :27:30. | :27:31. |
