Good evening.Wakefield Council has become the first council in the

north of England to formally oppose the government's plan to build the

new High Speed two railway. Councillors voted on the

controversial scheme this afternoon. The railway would pass through 11

miles of the district, but with no station. Here's Spencer Stokes.

It is the ?40 billion railway that the government says will revitalise

Yorkshire and help the county 's economy grew by a predicted ?2

billion a year. HS2 says councils in the North are behind the scheme but

today, Wakefield quoted `` voted against. There would be no district

there. Instead, the council wants a better regional rail work and a new

airport for Yorkshire. When the council calls for an airport, that

is ambitious. We believe the package we have put forward is realistic and

deliverable and one that in the long run will make a huge difference to

the North. Other Yorkshire councils are broadly in favour but have their

own ideas on how the line can be improved. Leeds City Council once

building work to start in the North. Sheffield council want the station

to be moved to is Sheffield city centre. City of York Council told

the government it supports the idea because trains from York would

connect to the new line but Bradford is more sceptical. The council

leader would like to see better regional services and wait ``

Wakefield is now at odds with Labour 's transport spokesman. I respect

her views and the views of those MPs who take a different view. We will

work together because we want to make a different and we want our

economy to grow. We want to start to compete with London. On Friday, the

consultation ends and later this year, the government will make a

final decision on where exactly the railway and its planned stations

will go. Police searching for missing York

student Megan Roberts say its most likely she fell in the river after

drinking with friends. The 20`year`old was last seen on CCTV on

Lendal Bridge in the early hours of Thursday morning. Divers have been

in the river today, but officers say the chances of finding Megan safe

and well are becoming increasingly remote. Our reporter, Ian White, is

in York for us now. Harry, it is incredibly sad to think

that this time last week Megan Roberts was out with friends in York

enjoying a drink but tonight she is feared dead. Police think she was

drunk and fell into the River Ouse so it is part of a major police

search. The strongest and most probable line of enquiry being

pursued by the police is that Megan, affected by alcohol, has entered the

river. Clearly we will not be in a position to definitely confirmed

this until Megan is found. Well, the police emphasise this

seems to be a terrible tragedy rather than foul play. They urge

anyone who may have information to get in touch. There is still a very

small chance that Megan may still be alive and her family, of course, are

clinging on to that hope. A nursery worker has re`lived the

horror of finding a toddler she'd been looking after strangled in an

accident on a playground slide in York. Sophie Redhead, who's 25,

spent several hours in the witness box. She's on trial following the

death of three`year`old Lydia Bishop at a nursery in 2012 and denies

manslaughter by gross negligence. David Cameron today refused to

apologise over the conduct of Margaret Thatcher's administration

during the miners' strike. Recently`released papers suggested

the Conservatives wanted to shut 75 pits even though they publicly said

they only wanted to close 20. The Prime Minister said Union leader

Arthur Scargill was the one who should say "sorry".

A flash mob of singers, artists and performers helped launch the

programme for the Yorkshire Festival which will herald the Tour De France

in July. Events will include plays, concerts and new works of art. Cathy

Killick's been finding out more. It is noisy, colourful and wacky and

that is just the launch. Performs came to Leeds to publicise the

festival. There is a 100`day festival will be

for everyone and everybody. It is inclusive and not just high`brow

arts stuff. What can we expect? 47 events have been commissioned and it

will run for 100 days. Highlights will include the ghost Palatine,

dancers will do a cycle dance through Leeds at dusk. Leeds born

sculptor will make two new sculptures for Yorkshire and one

arts group will stage a pedal powered fantastical parade in April.

But that's not all. This lot are called Hope and Social and this is

the official festival song. They're created something called a band

anyone can join and it will play 12 concerts. The idea is to take part.

They will come in their droves and come to our free events and find

pieces of fun and activity in places they have never been before. It is

Yorkshire 's ?2 million party so be there or miss out.

Hello. The next dose of wet and windy weather is due to arrive on

Friday from the Atlantic. Today we have had an easterly wind bringing

the chill as the threat of icy patches comes to the north where the

cloud breaks. More cloud further south. Maybe some sleet and snow in

parts of East Wales as we engage the cold air. Temperatures in the

south-east are not changing much because the rain keeps going. It

will be colder further north, though. Icy patches are possible.
