Yorkshire. We'll be live at the scene with the latest on the | :00:12. | :00:14.
investigation into the accident. Also tonight: | :00:15. | :00:21.

There is some brightness but we are heading into an unsettled period of | :00:41. | :00:45.
weather. Join me for all the details. | :00:46. | :00:51.
First tonight, investigations are underway after a pensioner died when | :00:52. | :00:56.
his car was hit by a train on a level crossing in North Yorkshire. | :00:57. | :01:01.
The accident happened early this morning on the gated level crossing | :01:02. | :01:05.
in Scampston near Malton. Passengers on the Scarborough to Liverpool | :01:06. | :01:09.
train said they heard a loud bang before the train juddered to a halt. | :01:10. | :01:14.
The crash left wreckage strewn across the line. It's the first | :01:15. | :01:16.
incident on this particular crossing. But since 2110 there have | :01:17. | :01:19.
been eight fatal accidents, including today's. Network Rail have | :01:20. | :01:22.
been gradually closing many level crossings and in the past five years | :01:23. | :01:27.
230 have shut. But today there are still almost 2,200 of these on the | :01:28. | :01:32.
East Coast and Midland Main lines. Phil Bodmer's at the scene for us | :01:33. | :01:45.
tonight. This line has now reopened. Trains are running. The focus of the | :01:46. | :01:50.
investigation is here. People say the victim who was a local farm | :01:51. | :01:54.
worker would have been familiar with this and used this crossing hundreds | :01:55. | :02:00.
of times before. The wreckage of a Suzuki car in which a 77`year`old | :02:01. | :02:04.
man was killed. The driver died after a trans`Pennine express train | :02:05. | :02:11.
struck the vehicle slicing it into. On a remote level crossing just | :02:12. | :02:20.
after 9am. Police were called to the scene as was the Fire Brigade. They | :02:21. | :02:27.
are working together now to find out exactly what happened. Our thoughts | :02:28. | :02:36.
and prayers are with his family. The level crossing requires users to | :02:37. | :02:39.
telephone for permission to cross. It is not known whether the phone | :02:40. | :02:44.
was used on this occasion. This is the unmanned level crossing where | :02:45. | :02:48.
the collision took place. The force of the impact weather train struck | :02:49. | :02:52.
the car has split the body of the car into. The train has travelled a | :02:53. | :02:56.
further 300 yards before coming to rest further down the track. No one | :02:57. | :03:03.
on board the train which was travelling at up to 70 mph was | :03:04. | :03:06.
injured although the train driver was treated for shock at the scene. | :03:07. | :03:10.
People were alerted to the incident and ran to help. There was a lot of | :03:11. | :03:17.
ambulances, police, fire engine, helicopters. It wasn't chaotic. It | :03:18. | :03:28.
was clear what has happened. It was traumatic, if nothing else. The line | :03:29. | :03:34.
was reopened at 2pm this afternoon as the car was taken away on a | :03:35. | :03:38.
recovery vehicle for further analysis. Police have not yet named | :03:39. | :03:43.
the victim and say joint investigations into because of the | :03:44. | :03:46.
crash are continuing with the help from the rail investigation Branch. | :03:47. | :03:52.
Network Rail says it is investing millions of pounds to make crossings | :03:53. | :03:57.
like this safer with footbridges, underpasses and even electronically | :03:58. | :04:00.
powered gates which operate when trains are not running. That all | :04:01. | :04:05.
costs millions of pounds. Who is going to pay for it? Local people | :04:06. | :04:10.
say this crossing is a lifeline to them. The closure of this crossing | :04:11. | :04:15.
was discussed by Network Rail a couple of years ago but didn't come | :04:16. | :04:21.
to pass. There will be more on this story on BBC Radio Devon York's | :04:22. | :04:26.
breakfast show tomorrow morning. Next tonight, the former chairman of | :04:27. | :04:29.
the Cooperative Bank, Paul Flowers, has been fined after admitting | :04:30. | :04:32.
possessing drugs, including cocaine. Flowers, who was also a Methodist | :04:33. | :04:36.
minister in Bradford, left the bank last June. There were chaotic scenes | :04:37. | :04:39.
as he arrived outside Leeds Crown Court this morning, and our report | :04:40. | :04:41.
does contain flash photography. Please don't ask me any questions. | :04:42. | :04:59.
You won't get any answers. Paul Flowers found himself locked out of | :05:00. | :05:04.
court surrounded by the media as he arrived for his hearing this | :05:05. | :05:08.
morning. He once headed a national bank earning a six`figure salary. He | :05:09. | :05:13.
was a Methodist minister in Bradford for 40 years before resigning last | :05:14. | :05:17.
year amidst his drug scandal. Today he finally admitted his shame. It | :05:18. | :05:24.
was last November when the sting by the Mail on Sunday newspaper exposed | :05:25. | :05:32.
him buying drugs in Leeds. There is a phrase for some people. It is | :05:33. | :05:37.
vultures. I really do hope somebody quotes me on that. After months of | :05:38. | :05:43.
interviews come he admitted his offences in court at the first | :05:44. | :05:47.
opportunity. The hearing before a district judge in Leeds lasted nine | :05:48. | :05:53.
minutes. Paul Flowers admitted possessing class A drugs, cocaine | :05:54. | :05:54.
and crystal maths and catamenia. `` `` meth. He had been taking cocaine | :05:55. | :06:13.
for 18 months before his arrest and appearance in court today. At first, | :06:14. | :06:21.
he had promised a fourth statement but it never happened. Anything to | :06:22. | :06:33.
say? A barrage of questions but no replies from Paul Flowers. | :06:34. | :06:36.
Later on Look North: The developers had high hopes their penthouse pods | :06:37. | :06:39.
would attract high`rollers to Bradford's textile quarter. But five | :06:40. | :06:44.
years on, why is no`one living in the Velvet Mill rooftop pods? | :06:45. | :06:51.
Protestors campaigning against the loss of free rail travel for | :06:52. | :06:55.
pensioners and disabled people in South Yorkshire have been stopped | :06:56. | :07:00.
from boarding a train in Barnsley. The county's transport authority has | :07:01. | :07:03.
limited the use of free passes on many buses and all trains, blaming | :07:04. | :07:08.
government funding cuts. Today train operator Northern Rail | :07:09. | :07:11.
got tough and used security officers to stop protestors getting inside | :07:12. | :07:15.
Barnsley's Transport Interchange. Ian White was there. | :07:16. | :07:21.
Back for a sixth time. Men and women angry their free rail travel is | :07:22. | :07:29.
being taken away from them. Over 100 protesters have turned out here at | :07:30. | :07:33.
Barnsley Interchange. Their plan was to get on a train and travel to | :07:34. | :07:37.
Meadowhall but they are going nowhere. There are security men on | :07:38. | :07:40.
the doors and police inside the station. The protesters made up of | :07:41. | :07:44.
pensioners and people with disabilities had planned to board | :07:45. | :07:47.
the train without buying a ticket but security officers even refused | :07:48. | :07:50.
to let anyone into the station who had not paid to travel. I thought | :07:51. | :07:56.
that was a public right of way. I thought you could get into the bus | :07:57. | :08:02.
station. They are working out that we are the awkward squad. Police | :08:03. | :08:06.
were keen not to have a repeat of the scenes from a few days ago when | :08:07. | :08:10.
the protesters got on a train without buying a ticket. We are | :08:11. | :08:13.
rather bemused that we have had five freedom rides and we don't | :08:14. | :08:16.
understand why Northern Rail are taking this obstructive attitude | :08:17. | :08:19.
today when the protests we are making would benefit Northern Rail | :08:20. | :08:24.
as well. They are losing a third of a million pound subsidy with the | :08:25. | :08:29.
ending of the rail concessions. We'd have thought they would want to side | :08:30. | :08:33.
with us. No one from Northern Rail was available for interview but the | :08:34. | :08:36.
company did emphasise that fair dodging is illegal. South Yorkshire | :08:37. | :08:38.
Transport Passenger Executive says removing the concessions brings the | :08:39. | :08:42.
area in line with the rest of the country and there are no plans to | :08:43. | :08:45.
reverse the decision. You can't blame them. It is this demolition | :08:46. | :08:48.
government, not coalition government. That is who is to blame. | :08:49. | :08:55.
I am very angry. What ever it takes, we are not giving up. Transport | :08:56. | :09:00.
bosses say they will meet with protesters tomorrow. Another demo is | :09:01. | :09:03.
planned for next week. They were the designer apartments | :09:04. | :09:18.
that were supposed to attract executive buyers but five years | :09:19. | :09:21.
after zinc and aluminium pods were built on the roof of a Victorian | :09:22. | :09:24.
mill in Bradford Look North has learned there's still no one living | :09:25. | :09:26.
in them. The penthouse flats on top of | :09:27. | :09:30.
Lister's Mill in Manningham have some of the best views in the city | :09:31. | :09:34.
but, as yet, there are no plans to encourage people to move in. Spencer | :09:35. | :09:44.
Stokes reports. The crowning glory at one of Yorkshire's most ambitious | :09:45. | :09:46.
regeneration schemes. Space age structures grafted onto the roof of | :09:47. | :09:50.
a grade two listed mill. Back in 2009, developers Urban Splash | :09:51. | :09:53.
predicted buyers would pay a little bit extra to live here. I'm | :09:54. | :09:56.
confident they will command a premium to the market and will | :09:57. | :09:59.
attract a good level of interest. Five years on, they are unoccupied | :10:00. | :10:02.
and Urban Splash say they have nothing new to report. One local | :10:03. | :10:05.
Councillor thinks they should never have been built. They are rather | :10:06. | :10:09.
like a wasp's nests. With all wasps you get a sting in the tail. You | :10:10. | :10:12.
shouldn't have monstrosities like that on top of a beautifully formed | :10:13. | :10:18.
stone Bradford mill. There are more conventional flats in the mill and | :10:19. | :10:21.
Molly was one of the first residents. She doesn't think she | :10:22. | :10:27.
will have neighbours in the pods. I can't see anything really happening | :10:28. | :10:31.
in the next few years. I think we have to regard them as being an | :10:32. | :10:35.
artefact or an art installation. For decades, developers shunned this | :10:36. | :10:38.
mill, feeling it was beyond rescue. Back in 2004, Urban Splash stepped | :10:39. | :10:42.
in with their own 20 year regeneration plan. Since then, the | :10:43. | :10:49.
property market has slumped. Take for example one flat that sold for | :10:50. | :10:58.
?140,000 in 2006. It is currently on sale for just ?65,000. A mill expert | :10:59. | :11:02.
says search tips have to be expected in long`running projects. When the | :11:03. | :11:07.
Victorians were building Bradford, I'm sure it didn't happen overnight. | :11:08. | :11:11.
Someone might come to us and say there has been a slump in the | :11:12. | :11:14.
textile industry, we have got to stop building. There were slumps and | :11:15. | :11:19.
then they started again. I am sure this is one hiccup that Bradford | :11:20. | :11:22.
will get over. Urban Splash have had success in Manchester but we are a | :11:23. | :11:26.
long way from Manchester physically and financially. It is going to be | :11:27. | :11:30.
some considerable time before people seriously look at occupying the | :11:31. | :11:35.
pods. With around nine acres of land still waiting to be developed, it | :11:36. | :11:38.
lends itself to all sorts of ambitious ideas but it might be a | :11:39. | :11:42.
while before any more zinc pods appear on Bradford's skyline. | :11:43. | :11:49.
Before seven o'clock: How prepared are we for the fast`approaching Tour | :11:50. | :11:53.
de France? A fortnight tomorrow we will be | :11:54. | :12:19.
going to the poll in the local and European elections. | :12:20. | :12:25.
The Liberal Democrats want one European seat animated `` face a | :12:26. | :12:55.
tough time keeping it. Nick Clegg is heavily branding his party as the | :12:56. | :12:59.
only one that is for Europe. Campaigning has its problems. At | :13:00. | :13:03.
this time of year, the knuckles get a bit sore from the doorknocking. | :13:04. | :13:07.
Not only the knuckles but as you put the leaflets through the double | :13:08. | :13:10.
flap... What sort of reception are you getting? Good. I think in this | :13:11. | :13:14.
part of Sheffield there is a sense of optimism about the economy. That | :13:15. | :13:18.
is the most important thing for people. That message is encouraged | :13:19. | :13:21.
by the performance of people like the Bradfield Brewery in Sheffield. | :13:22. | :13:24.
Small farm turned thriving beer bottler. If this campaign has taught | :13:25. | :13:28.
us nothing else, it is that there was time for a pint. This is the | :13:29. | :13:32.
Nigel Farage moment where he is having a pint. It is the Nick Clegg | :13:33. | :13:37.
moment. That is very good. Are you worried about UKIP? You have got to | :13:38. | :13:40.
know Nigel Farage over the last few weeks. I am not worried about UKIP. | :13:41. | :13:44.
I am worried about the UK leaving the European Union. That is clearly | :13:45. | :13:48.
what UKIP is advocating. The Conservative Party is split down the | :13:49. | :13:51.
middle. David Cameron's position is totally incomprehensible and Ed | :13:52. | :13:54.
Miliband won't lift a finger to say what he believes in. I am the only | :13:55. | :14:02.
leader who is prepared to get up, even when it is unpopular, and I | :14:03. | :14:06.
know it is, hang on a minute, we can't drift to the exit sign. | :14:07. | :14:15.
Europe won't be the first thing people think of if their Lib Dem | :14:16. | :14:22.
knocks on the door. The decisions the party has made as part of the | :14:23. | :14:26.
coalition will be. The number of Lib Dems has been cut in Sheffield since | :14:27. | :14:30.
2010 and it could get worse. You might be one of the only Lib Dems | :14:31. | :14:35.
standing in Sheffield. I am not going to put numbers on it. We have | :14:36. | :14:39.
to fight for every vote, get on every doorstep, make our case. I | :14:40. | :14:42.
acknowledge that doing that is harder than it was in the days of | :14:43. | :14:46.
opposition when people didn't really bother too much about what we had | :14:47. | :14:51.
done in government. We now have a record we have to stand on. The most | :14:52. | :14:57.
important thing is do you look back on what you have done as a party and | :14:58. | :15:02.
say to yourself, you have done the right thing for the country as a | :15:03. | :15:05.
whole and delivering fairer taxes, a fairer society and I believe what we | :15:06. | :15:09.
have done in government shows we have done all of those things. Nick | :15:10. | :15:12.
Clegg has been meeting constituents face`to`face and the key to this | :15:13. | :15:15.
election might be trying to get them to listen. When we get out there we | :15:16. | :15:21.
tell our side of the story and explain that without the Lib Dems | :15:22. | :15:24.
there wouldn't be a recovery, we wouldn't be creating a stronger | :15:25. | :15:27.
economy, we wouldn't be finishing the job of economic recovery. When | :15:28. | :15:32.
we get the chance to do that, people do respond positively to us. Lib Dem | :15:33. | :15:38.
revival in 2015? We will fight for every vote and knock on every door | :15:39. | :15:41.
and I enjoy campaigning and we have a record to be proud of. That claim | :15:42. | :15:46.
will be tested in the next few weeks. You can find out more | :15:47. | :15:51.
information about all the parties and candidates on the BBC's Election | :15:52. | :15:55.
2014 website. And tomorrow the lead candidates for | :15:56. | :15:58.
the European elections from the main parties will be taking part in a | :15:59. | :16:04.
special debate. That's The Yorkshire and Humber Debate with Tim Iredale | :16:05. | :16:07.
from our Sunday Politics programme at 12 noon on Radio Leeds, Radio | :16:08. | :16:12.
Sheffield and Radio York. Now we saw the Deputy Prime Minister | :16:13. | :16:15.
there enjoying a pint of Yorkshire's finest beer from the Bradfield | :16:16. | :16:18.
Brewery in Sheffield. Well Tom Ingall's there for us tonight ` no | :16:19. | :16:28.
doubt also enjoying a pint! Yes he's in High Bradfield as we | :16:29. | :16:31.
continue our trip round Yorkshire to see how prepared we are for the | :16:32. | :16:35.
Summer's major event ` the Tour de France. Tom. | :16:36. | :16:44.
I wish I was drinking tonight but it is whiskey because it is cold. If it | :16:45. | :16:49.
wasn't raining, this would be a fantastic view. A very famous view | :16:50. | :16:56.
and hard to believe we are seven miles from Sheffield city centre. Is | :16:57. | :17:01.
this `` it is this image that Yorkshire would like to promote. | :17:02. | :17:05.
This pub has plenty going on but first, before we talk to the | :17:06. | :17:09.
landlord, let us look at what is happening down the road. The wheel | :17:10. | :17:15.
is already rolling. In the park, the flower beds are being planted up in | :17:16. | :17:19.
the colours of the French flag. This will be one of the official | :17:20. | :17:24.
spectator hubs to the delight of the parish council. It is a tremendous | :17:25. | :17:28.
opportunity for Sheffield and the Paris. `` parish. Some will be | :17:29. | :17:34.
concerned about the road closures and things like that but on the | :17:35. | :17:40.
whole, it is good for Sheffield and the village. The bike ride, I love | :17:41. | :17:49.
it. Like so many miles of Yorkshire road, it supports fresh tarmac stop | :17:50. | :17:55.
other roadworks still need to be finished. There is for villages on | :17:56. | :17:59.
this stretch of Tour de France route expecting thousands of visitors. | :18:00. | :18:05.
John White joins me. How will you squeeze a whole weekend of business | :18:06. | :18:15.
going `` into two hours of cycling? We hope it will go on for a week | :18:16. | :18:19.
with the tourists and enthusiasts and we will get everybody fed. Are | :18:20. | :18:28.
we spreading ourselves to Finley? Don't underestimate the power of the | :18:29. | :18:34.
torch and to get it is a huge achievement. It is going to be big. | :18:35. | :18:39.
You think you will dine out of this for five years? We will. All your | :18:40. | :18:52.
event is licensed and ready to go? We are and we are ready to go. Let | :18:53. | :18:59.
us hope the weather will improve. In sport, Leeds United have been issued | :19:00. | :19:03.
with a winding`up petition by a company linked to the club's former | :19:04. | :19:05.
Managing Director. David Haigh led a takeover at Elland | :19:06. | :19:09.
Road in 2012 and earlier this year, tried to buy the club again with | :19:10. | :19:12.
another group. Sport Capital loaned Leeds almost ?1 million and the | :19:13. | :19:16.
deadline for repayment has passed. The petition will be considered at a | :19:17. | :19:19.
hearing in London on June ninth. Cricket now. And on the final day of | :19:20. | :19:24.
their County Championship match at Durham, the hosts have dug in to | :19:25. | :19:28.
frustrate Yorkshire, I'm afraid. Yorkshire have been bowling all day | :19:29. | :19:32.
to try and force a positive result. First they pegged Durham down to a | :19:33. | :19:37.
first innings 388 all out. And even more wickets fell in the second, as | :19:38. | :19:40.
Durham followed on. But it wasn't enough. Durham's second innings | :19:41. | :19:44.
stood at 100 ` four at the end of their overs. And the match has, | :19:45. | :19:50.
after all, finished in a draw. Seven swimmers from Yorkshire have | :19:51. | :19:52.
been picked to represent England at this summer's Commonwealth Games in | :19:53. | :19:56.
Glasgow. They include Ellie Faulkner from Sheffield who swam freestyle | :19:57. | :19:59.
for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics. Joe Roebuck from Rotherham | :20:00. | :20:03.
will be one of the most experienced members of the squad. He's | :20:04. | :20:08.
determined to make up for under performing at the London Games. When | :20:09. | :20:15.
it comes to the Olympics, I had an upset and was in hospital. I | :20:16. | :20:20.
couldn't deliver my best performances which really bugged me | :20:21. | :20:24.
because I was going in with a shot at a medal. I am really looking at | :20:25. | :20:31.
that. I have been focused on the Commonwealth Games. | :20:32. | :20:33.
He was the official artist at the 2012 Olympics and he's painted the | :20:34. | :20:37.
Queen ` how do you top that? Well Darren Baker's latest project | :20:38. | :20:40.
is aiming at giving something back. The Huddersfield artist has | :20:41. | :20:43.
illustrated a children's book which was written by his wife, all profits | :20:44. | :20:48.
going to the Princes Trust. Darren and Abigail are with us now | :20:49. | :20:51.
along with another special guest, Albert. You are very noisy. Tell us | :20:52. | :21:05.
about Albert and the book, Albert the Handy Dog. It was inspired by | :21:06. | :21:10.
Albert and his capers when we were building our first home. We have | :21:11. | :21:18.
this idea to write a book. Abigail Brent Tate and I illustrated and now | :21:19. | :21:24.
we are set up with a book to help the Princes trust. Why did you write | :21:25. | :21:32.
the book? It came to our daughter's birthday and we decided we would | :21:33. | :21:39.
make something. I wrote it. One of the great things is you are trying | :21:40. | :21:43.
to give something back because Bradford College means a great deal | :21:44. | :21:48.
to you. Tell us about that side of your life. 15 years ago I left | :21:49. | :21:53.
Bradford College and had a great experience there. I wanted to put | :21:54. | :22:02.
something back. Through Albert, I am hoping to do something. I'm a | :22:03. | :22:05.
crudely painted the Queen. I am so blown away. It is unbelievable. What | :22:06. | :22:16.
was she like? Wonderful. It was a week after the royal wedding. | :22:17. | :22:22.
Abigail was there and it was remarkable. Was Albert there? You | :22:23. | :22:37.
were chatting about dogs, won't you? What has been the most difficult | :22:38. | :22:42.
challenge? Alberts. Lots of dog estates. `` biscuits. How long would | :22:43. | :22:53.
it take you to create something like this? This talk 200 hours. From | :22:54. | :23:02.
beginning to end, there was a lot of time creating it. What is incredible | :23:03. | :23:07.
is they look like photographs. It is hard to distinguish the two. It is | :23:08. | :23:12.
something I have been detailing for years. I was going to ask you to | :23:13. | :23:20.
pate Harry and myself and then I looked at your price tag. 90 grand? | :23:21. | :23:26.
I have my Yorkshire rates. Thanks very much. | :23:27. | :23:34.
Can you remember when we went to lunch with the Queen at Haywood | :23:35. | :23:36.
house. She took your breath away. Let me show you three pictures that | :23:37. | :23:44.
came in. Some ominous looking skies there. | :23:45. | :24:05.
The conditions are turning very unsettled. We will have some patchy | :24:06. | :24:12.
outbreaks of rain. The weekend is looking pretty poor. Tomorrow, | :24:13. | :24:19.
rather cloudy with some patchy rain. It will be difficult to get the | :24:20. | :24:30.
details right. We have a number of showers across parts of the | :24:31. | :24:33.
Pennines. They will continue for some time pushing eastwards. | :24:34. | :24:39.
Eventually, they should become few and far between. Temperatures down | :24:40. | :24:47.
to nine Celsius. The sun will rise in the morning at 5:17am. A mixed | :24:48. | :24:57.
bag tomorrow. Some drier and brighter weather towards the coast. | :24:58. | :25:02.
Showers for Western South Yorkshire and it is later in the day when we | :25:03. | :25:06.
will see the showers becoming more organised. The best of the dry and | :25:07. | :25:13.
bright weather will be towards that East Coast. The top temperatures | :25:14. | :25:26.
now. Highs of 13 Celsius. A little bit further ahead, some rain to come | :25:27. | :25:31.
for Thursday night. Friday is a brighter day. Shower clouds will | :25:32. | :25:34.
develop on Friday afternoon. There is the risk of some thunder and some | :25:35. | :25:38.
very wet weather developing through Saturday and further outbreaks of | :25:39. | :25:42.
rain to come on Sunday. That is the forecast. | :25:43. | :25:49.
That is as far as we go. I will be back for our late news at 1020 5p. | :25:50. | :25:55.
Goodbye. `` 10:25pm. 'This is the story of Nick Clegg - | :25:56. | :26:21.
a man entrusted by a nation 'to act upon the policies | :26:22. | :26:26.
he proposed. | :26:27. | :26:30. |
