If we could be reunited, it would mean everything. The city on course

:00:15.:00:46.

to become the first in the country to offer free Wi`Fi to all. It has

:00:47.:00:51.

been another unsettled day but there is good news on the horizon.

:00:52.:01:03.

Good evening and welcome to the programme.

:01:04.:01:10.

For five years there has been precious hope for the family of

:01:11.:01:17.

Claudia Lawrence. For the first time, 59`year`old man has been

:01:18.:01:26.

arrested for her murder. He has been named as Michael shelling.

:01:27.:01:37.

He is Michael Snelling who is 59`years`old and from York.

:01:38.:01:40.

Let me just describe to you where we are tonight.

:01:41.:01:42.

Claudia's house is in the Heworth area of York.

:01:43.:01:45.

We're at a house half a mile away in the Burnholme area of the city where

:01:46.:01:49.

forensic officers have been carrying out searches all afternoon.

:01:50.:01:51.

And that's close to York University, where Claudia worked as a chef.

:01:52.:01:57.

The headlines became increasingly grim.

:01:58.:02:08.

The day when the attention of the media fell on a semidetached house

:02:09.:02:16.

in York at the home of the 59`year`old man arrested by the

:02:17.:02:21.

Claudia Lawrence investigation team. One of a series of searches being

:02:22.:02:26.

carried out across York but still Claudia has not been found. At the

:02:27.:02:33.

local pub a feud doors away, rumours spread today that it is thought the

:02:34.:02:38.

man arrested may also have been a regular hair but not for some time.

:02:39.:02:50.

We used to go after golf. We always had a normal conversation. The man

:02:51.:03:02.

arrested is thought to have worked at York university. There has been

:03:03.:03:08.

reaction from family and friends. I always said when they started again,

:03:09.:03:13.

the only way forward was to go back, write to the beginning and

:03:14.:03:17.

they have taken it on board what I have said and they are doing that.

:03:18.:03:27.

Does it remain a total mystery? Hopefully this is one step closer

:03:28.:03:32.

and the beginning of the end but who knows. It is in the hands of the

:03:33.:03:39.

police and I am grateful that despite what people have said that

:03:40.:03:42.

they are not doing enough, they clearly are doing a lot behind the

:03:43.:03:47.

scenes that we don't see. This afternoon, the search scenes spread

:03:48.:03:52.

to a house where Northumbria police said there was a link with the

:03:53.:03:56.

Lawrence investigation. Back in York, further arrests may follow but

:03:57.:04:00.

there is still quite some way to go in the case.

:04:01.:04:05.

Well Martin Dales is a close friend of the Lawrence family and I spoke

:04:06.:04:09.

to him earlier to get his reaction. The work that the police have been

:04:10.:04:31.

doing has brought things to light that they need to know and need to

:04:32.:04:36.

investigate. The way the public have engaged with the revitalisation of

:04:37.:04:45.

the Claudia case in the autumn has been terrific and there is no doubt

:04:46.:04:49.

the information that people put in means a huge amount, both to the

:04:50.:04:55.

family and to the police in trying to work out where Claudia is. The

:04:56.:05:01.

investigation seemed to stall but the fresh impetus before Christmas

:05:02.:05:06.

clearly must have helped. We wish them well in trying to find what has

:05:07.:05:13.

happened. This is one part of it. We need to see how this transpired,

:05:14.:05:20.

this particular incident. At the end of the day, there is a process of

:05:21.:05:24.

law that has to be followed and it is important that it happens. The

:05:25.:05:30.

one thing the family needs to do is to find Claudia. That is uppermost

:05:31.:05:37.

in the minds of the family. It has always been a twin process. The

:05:38.:05:41.

police have always taken the suspected murder route. The family,

:05:42.:05:47.

in the absence of any body of Claudia Com have taken a more

:05:48.:05:49.

hopeful liners in the absence of that, there is still hope. How is

:05:50.:06:04.

Peter today? It is a tough time. It raised it in 2009 when it became a

:06:05.:06:10.

case for the police. Not an easy day at all and I am sure everybody will

:06:11.:06:15.

be thinking of the family at this time as matters move on. Most people

:06:16.:06:22.

in York can tell you the chronology of the disappearance of Claudia. She

:06:23.:06:26.

was last seen on March five years ago 2009. The last day was March 18

:06:27.:06:31.

and she was seen walking towards her house. The next day, she failed to

:06:32.:06:36.

turn up to work and also missed an appointment with one of her friends.

:06:37.:06:39.

The day after that, her father phoned the police.

:06:40.:06:46.

My name is Peter Lawrence, I am concerned about my daughter.

:06:47.:06:56.

Father's phone call starts the beginning of a mystery that has

:06:57.:06:59.

baffled police for the last five years. On 19th of March 2009 Claudia

:07:00.:07:06.

Lawrence else to arrive at her work as a chef. It is unusual. She is a

:07:07.:07:12.

reliable employee and was at work the day before just as normal. For a

:07:13.:07:18.

month, the police make detailed searches and the surrounding area ``

:07:19.:07:27.

in the surrounding area. Five weeks after her disappearance, police

:07:28.:07:30.

revealed they think she has been murdered. Any murder investigation

:07:31.:07:34.

has to approve a death. At the moment, we have no proof of

:07:35.:07:41.

Claudia's death, however, five weeks on since her disappearance, we also

:07:42.:07:47.

have no proof of her life so I am investigating this disappearance as

:07:48.:07:52.

one of suspected murder. The case features several times on Crimewatch

:07:53.:07:56.

as the theories come and go. A couple were seen are going on the

:07:57.:08:00.

morning she disappeared and with a relevant? Nothing needs to Claudia.

:08:01.:08:09.

There is something missing. A very important thing missing and that is

:08:10.:08:15.

Claudia. Five years on and with a trail seemingly cold coming North

:08:16.:08:18.

Yorkshire police launch a review of the case and search her house again

:08:19.:08:22.

and this time find new fingerprints will stop in March, it is revealed

:08:23.:08:28.

DNA has been found in a cigarette butt in Claudia's car. Footage is

:08:29.:08:34.

found of two more vehicles that interest the police and witnesses

:08:35.:08:36.

describe two more men seen separately, won his 30s and the

:08:37.:08:42.

other in his 50s. Today, news of an arrest. The first on suspicion of

:08:43.:08:48.

murder. The most extensive enquiry ever seen in the city of York.

:08:49.:08:55.

With me now is a former policeman who has some up`to`date policing

:08:56.:09:10.

techniques. Five years ago, I said at some point the police are going

:09:11.:09:15.

to go knocking on somebody's door matters what has appeared to have

:09:16.:09:20.

happened now. From 2009, right through to this present day, there

:09:21.:09:27.

is two key things. One is the tenacity of Peter Lawrence and his

:09:28.:09:32.

family for the campaign which has been relentless in keeping that in

:09:33.:09:35.

the public attention. Also the tenacity of the police. It is never

:09:36.:09:40.

easy and you never know what is going on behind the investigation

:09:41.:09:46.

team. It can be a frustrating process. The advances like in the

:09:47.:09:51.

Stephen Lawrence case, to potentially now, you have to keep

:09:52.:09:55.

things and always be prepared that with the advance of technology and

:09:56.:10:01.

DNA and forensic evidence moving forward and the profiling, this can

:10:02.:10:07.

lead to looking at what might have happened and bring some closure. A

:10:08.:10:12.

fresh look clearly helped because it became a cold case. How much did

:10:13.:10:19.

that provide a new impetus? The original investigating team will

:10:20.:10:25.

have... It would be a fault of what they have done. It is down to the

:10:26.:10:28.

forensics. When you step back from the case, it can and you hear of

:10:29.:10:36.

these cold cases going on. This could well have been the case of a

:10:37.:10:41.

fresh pair of eyes we looking through things. It sometimes works

:10:42.:10:47.

and I am hopeful, not only for the people who have followed this case

:10:48.:10:52.

because it has been such a high`profile case. We are still

:10:53.:10:58.

searching for Claude. We are. Let's not forget, potentially she may be

:10:59.:11:04.

alive. You have to keep that hope alive. At the very least, what I

:11:05.:11:09.

want for the Lawrence family and people who have shown such interest

:11:10.:11:15.

in this case, that there is some closure for everybody. That is the

:11:16.:11:19.

next question can stop what happens next? The family may be cautious

:11:20.:11:25.

about this news. I believe there is a long way to go in this case. The

:11:26.:11:34.

questioning will go on for up to 72 hours. The police have made it clear

:11:35.:11:40.

that further arrests could follow and it may well be that he could be

:11:41.:11:44.

released on police bail. I don't think we are very near to the end

:11:45.:11:50.

but clearly this is the biggest breakthrough by a long way in the

:11:51.:11:56.

whole five`year saga. Just to round off, the admiration you have for the

:11:57.:12:00.

whole family keeping this in the news. It has been a momentous drive

:12:01.:12:08.

by Peter Lawrence to keep this absolutely at the forefront of

:12:09.:12:13.

everybody's mind. There has been new pic `` newspaper campaigns, train

:12:14.:12:16.

station campaigns. At the time they didn't know who the offender was.

:12:17.:12:24.

Recently there has been updates on Crimewatch UK. Thank you very much

:12:25.:12:29.

indeed. Let us return to Amy for the rest of the news.

:12:30.:12:35.

Let's turn to the rest of the day's news.

:12:36.:12:38.

An inquest into the death of Leeds schoolteacher Ann Maguire has heard

:12:39.:12:41.

the fatal blow she suffered was a stab wound to the neck.

:12:42.:12:44.

Mrs Maguire died in her classroom at the Corpus Christi College

:12:45.:12:47.

A 15`year`old boy has been charged with her murder.

:12:48.:12:51.

The inquest was adjourned until legal proceedings have been

:12:52.:12:54.

A specialist heart ward for women at the Leeds General Infirmary is to

:12:55.:13:00.

be temporarily closed because of a shortage of nurses.

:13:01.:13:02.

The 22 bed unit will shut to new admissions on Thursday with all

:13:03.:13:06.

patients being looked after in other parts of the hospital.

:13:07.:13:08.

The Trust says they will review the decision once enough qualified

:13:09.:13:11.

Five sheep were killed and five others injured in a vicious dog

:13:12.:13:19.

We should warn you, you may find some of these pictures distressing.

:13:20.:13:24.

It happened at a farm in Blaxton near Doncaster.

:13:25.:13:27.

The ten sheep were grazing close to a house when they were

:13:28.:13:30.

It is thought two large dogs were responsible, but it's unclear

:13:31.:13:34.

Thankfully five sheep have survived, though only after receiving

:13:35.:13:38.

Please know where your dog is and look after it. At this time of year

:13:39.:13:55.

when people are starting to go out after a wet winter into the

:13:56.:14:00.

countryside meeting lots of newborn lambs, it is very relevant that they

:14:01.:14:05.

are careful about keeping their dog in close control.

:14:06.:14:08.

Work begins in York today on the start of scheme

:14:09.:14:11.

which will deliver free wi`fi to all, right across the city.

:14:12.:14:14.

The scale is unprecedented in the UK and it should make a city famous

:14:15.:14:18.

for its heritage just as well known for its technology.

:14:19.:14:20.

Here's our business correspondent Danni Hewson.

:14:21.:14:31.

People come for the history but use the cutting edge to enjoy

:14:32.:14:36.

it, from posting holiday snaps to booking the next attraction,

:14:37.:14:38.

millions of Internet connections are made every second.

:14:39.:14:42.

Now York is about to make it easier, offering free unlimited Wi`Fi to

:14:43.:14:45.

all right across the city. Following a successful trial,

:14:46.:14:48.

the kit is being rolled out starting in the city centre in time

:14:49.:14:50.

for the Grand Depart so you can keep up with the news.

:14:51.:14:56.

The kit they are using is designed with the likes of stadiums

:14:57.:15:00.

and other areas in mind. The equipment is ` capable

:15:01.:15:04.

of handling thousands of users. The scale is unprecedented and will

:15:05.:15:07.

make York the most connected city in the UK if not in Europe.

:15:08.:15:11.

If you are a York resident, you might be asking who is paying

:15:12.:15:16.

the bill. This is a private sector investment

:15:17.:15:19.

with some funding coming from our super connected city programme

:15:20.:15:22.

which is coming from European funding and central government.

:15:23.:15:25.

There is no money being put in from the City of York Council

:15:26.:15:28.

and residents. Some of the biggest attractions

:15:29.:15:32.

in the world now list their connectivity

:15:33.:15:35.

as a unique selling point. You can pick up where to go,

:15:36.:15:38.

what to do. I am not

:15:39.:15:41.

at a loose end today because I am at work but I am picking up e`mails

:15:42.:15:45.

and answering stuff as I go along. A lot

:15:46.:15:47.

of people use their smart phones for finding their way and if you

:15:48.:15:51.

have Wi`Fi, you have no problems. You can access your map.

:15:52.:15:55.

Wi`Fi is a great enabler and we can change people's habits by

:15:56.:15:59.

taking them down the streets of York that don't get a lot of foot fall.

:16:00.:16:05.

The first phase will start appearing from today.

:16:06.:16:09.

Unobtrusive in the real world, they will pack a massive punch

:16:10.:16:10.

in the virtual one. Labour leader Ed Miliband has told

:16:11.:16:17.

Look North that he's got the right policies to do well at the local

:16:18.:16:21.

and European elections next week. His party is preparing to do battle

:16:22.:16:25.

in both campaigns a week But because it's

:16:26.:16:28.

the only time outside of a general election when all voters can take

:16:29.:16:32.

part, it's seen as a test of how James Vincent has been on the

:16:33.:16:36.

West Yorkshire campaign trail with Is that for me?

:16:37.:16:50.

Thank you so much. They are not voters just yet but

:16:51.:16:53.

their mums and dads are listening. I'm looking for some red.

:16:54.:16:57.

As much as they want votes now, Ed Miliband and labour know it is

:16:58.:17:00.

all about getting the biggest share at the general election next year.

:17:01.:17:05.

We can make a difference to the mums here because we're going to

:17:06.:17:08.

have 25 hours free childcare for all three and four`year`olds

:17:09.:17:11.

with working parents. That is up from 15 hours

:17:12.:17:14.

at the moment. We have got it costed and paid

:17:15.:17:19.

for by increasing the bank levy and it is part of Labour's campaign

:17:20.:17:23.

to tackle the cost of living crisis that so many people are facing

:17:24.:17:26.

in childcare, energy, housing. Those are the bread

:17:27.:17:28.

and butter issues of this local election campaign.

:17:29.:17:31.

Ed Miliband has been making the most of his Yorkshire connections.

:17:32.:17:34.

He spent four years in Horsforth in Leeds growing up.

:17:35.:17:36.

Do you know the school called Featherbank Mount?

:17:37.:17:41.

I went there just down the road. Yorkshire is where

:17:42.:17:44.

the labour movement started and he needs that local support now.

:17:45.:17:47.

There are worries that this election may show it isn't strong

:17:48.:17:51.

enough to challenge next year. It is your stomping ground.

:17:52.:17:54.

It is. It is where I grew up.

:17:55.:17:59.

What happens if you don't do well in this election?

:18:00.:18:02.

We are fighting for every vote and I will let them decide who they will

:18:03.:18:06.

want to vote for. I hope they will vote Labour

:18:07.:18:10.

because we have the right answers. I think we're answering the things

:18:11.:18:13.

people are worried about which is the future of this country and

:18:14.:18:17.

whether it works for them and that is Labour's picture this election.

:18:18.:18:19.

Let's tackle the cost of living crisis

:18:20.:18:22.

and make the country work for you. You did badly in the last European

:18:23.:18:24.

elections. We want to do as well

:18:25.:18:27.

as possible but I feel confident they have the right message and we

:18:28.:18:31.

are talking about how we can make a difference to people's lives.

:18:32.:18:34.

A lot has been made about your image.

:18:35.:18:38.

Does it wind you up when people have a go at you?

:18:39.:18:42.

I have got used to it and it comes with the territory.

:18:43.:18:45.

The thing for me is talk about the issues that matter to people.

:18:46.:18:48.

There is lots of Westminster nonsense that talk about the things

:18:49.:18:52.

that really matter, whether it is energy bills or wages, or housing.

:18:53.:18:54.

People want a politics and the Labour Party on their side.

:18:55.:19:03.

Sounds like you would rather be in the sweet shop than down

:19:04.:19:05.

in Westminster. You learn much more

:19:06.:19:08.

a day outside Westminster than a week in Westminster.

:19:09.:19:11.

Talking to people about their lives, their experiences,

:19:12.:19:13.

that is how we make the best policy and the best politics.

:19:14.:19:16.

This is what it is all about, meeting the voters to make sure

:19:17.:19:19.

they are voting for him. It is a dress rehearsal for 2015.

:19:20.:19:23.

His future may depend on how his party gets on later this month.

:19:24.:19:30.

And there's more information on the parties and candidates can be found

:19:31.:19:33.

In football, York City will have to come from behind to keep

:19:34.:19:41.

Michael Coulson cut inside and shot just wide for the Minstermen

:19:42.:19:45.

But a goal from their former player Matty Blair

:19:46.:19:49.

was enough to give Fleetwood a 1`0 lead go into Friday's second leg.

:19:50.:20:03.

We weren't ourselves. We had a real go and we created chances. We have

:20:04.:20:14.

to be more ruthless when the time comes.

:20:15.:20:16.

In cricket, Yorkshire have blitzed to their second County Championship

:20:17.:20:19.

They polished off Warwickshire's first innings for 200 before lunch

:20:20.:20:25.

Apologies now for getting our dates mixed up last night.

:20:26.:20:39.

The second leg of Leeds Carnegie's play`off semi`final at London Welsh

:20:40.:20:42.

is this Sunday and not Saturday as we reported.

:20:43.:20:47.

We plan to preview that game and Rotherham Titans semi against

:20:48.:20:51.

And let's end on a high note with congratulations

:20:52.:20:57.

to Mr Barnsley, Norman Rimmington, who's won a special award

:20:58.:21:00.

Norman still works in the laundry at Barnsley

:21:01.:21:05.

after doing almost every job at the club since joining in 1946.

:21:06.:21:08.

His loyalty and hard work has been recognised by

:21:09.:21:14.

It must be a pain getting those grass stains out of those whites.

:21:15.:21:27.

Don't you think Paul? There is this talk about a keep

:21:28.:21:40.

we've `` heatwave that is going on for ever more. There is some nice

:21:41.:21:46.

weather on the way. First of all, two lovely pictures and this one is

:21:47.:21:52.

beautiful. It is St Peter's Church with a stormy sky there. There has

:21:53.:22:01.

been some heavy downpours today. A dramatic sunrise here in

:22:02.:22:04.

Scarborough. You can pick the pictures coming in.

:22:05.:22:18.

Let's have a look at the skyline outside Leeds now. It has cleared up

:22:19.:22:26.

very nicely. Those heavy showers have pushed away to the east. There

:22:27.:22:31.

is one or two isolated showers still left. There should be some pleasant

:22:32.:22:39.

sunshine around and tomorrow looks mostly fine with sunny periods and

:22:40.:22:44.

it should feel warmer. This ridge of high pressure pushes in from the

:22:45.:22:48.

south`west. You can see on the satellite picture we had some big

:22:49.:22:53.

clouds today that brought a lot of rain. We had some localised flooding

:22:54.:22:58.

in places. It looks like those showers are already beginning to

:22:59.:23:03.

diminish in intensity. There is one or two showers to the north but they

:23:04.:23:08.

will be dying a death through the night. It is a chilly night for mid

:23:09.:23:20.

May. Temperatures could get down to five seconds `` five Celsius but in

:23:21.:23:23.

the towns and cities, it could be more around seven Celsius.

:23:24.:23:38.

A glorious start with clear blue skies across the whole of Yorkshire.

:23:39.:23:46.

Plenty of sunshine first thing in the morning. As temperatures rise,
