It's been a beautiful day. How long will the fine weather last? Join me

Sheffield. You know who is It has been a day of police activity

:01:23.:01:32.

here at Michael Snelling's semi`detached suburban home in York.

:01:33.:01:35.

He's continuing to be questioned at a police station all day today by

:01:36.:01:39.

detectives and the police stance has not altered from the statement of

:01:40.:01:43.

yesterday morning when they said that they've arrested a 59`year`old

:01:44.:01:46.

man on suspicion of the murder of Claudia Lawrence and further arrests

:01:47.:01:51.

could not be ruled out. This afternoon they sent the dogs in, the

:01:52.:01:56.

police dogs in to search Michael Snelling's back garden. Earlier a

:01:57.:02:00.

tent had been erected for forensic investigations to begin.

:02:01.:02:04.

The questioning of the 59`year`old former university lab technician

:02:05.:02:08.

went into its second day. In North Shields, there were further police

:02:09.:02:12.

searches today at the home of Michael Snelling's mother, where he

:02:13.:02:17.

was arrested yesterday. One of Claudia's best friends told today of

:02:18.:02:21.

receiving the news that there have been an arrest in the case. I can

:02:22.:02:25.

always say that I've never totally given up hope. I've always wanted a

:02:26.:02:32.

resolution. That's not changed. As time's gone on, you have to get on

:02:33.:02:38.

with life to a certain extent, but Claudia's disappearance has been

:02:39.:02:41.

part of my life for more than five years now. It will be probably

:02:42.:02:49.

forever. Yesterday's developments followed the relaunch last autumn by

:02:50.:02:53.

a new police team of the investigation into Claudia's

:02:54.:02:56.

disappearance, after five years with no apparent results. It included a

:02:57.:03:02.

new two`month search of Claudia's house. For the first time, new

:03:03.:03:07.

fingerprints had been found inside. Six months later, the progress of

:03:08.:03:12.

the new investigation led to yesterday's arrest of Michael

:03:13.:03:19.

Snelling. John what happens next? Mr Snelling has now been in police

:03:20.:03:25.

custody for 36 hours. He could be held for up to 48, 72 or even 96

:03:26.:03:29.

hours. There's a feeling tonight that it may be getting to a

:03:30.:03:33.

situation now where he could be given bail, pending further

:03:34.:03:36.

inquiries. We're awaiting possible news on that later this evening.

:03:37.:03:43.

Thank you. Later, captured on CCTV. The moments

:03:44.:03:51.

members of a group claim they spread the Christian message confront a man

:03:52.:04:01.

at a Bradford mosque. Next tonight, five days ago Jasmyn

:04:02.:04:07.

Chan was killed in a hit`and`run. Police are following new leads as

:04:08.:04:10.

they try to find the driver. Today her parents appealed to the public

:04:11.:04:14.

for their help. Clasping a grey hoodie top, a

:04:15.:04:20.

favourite of her daughter's, Jasmyn Chan's mother joined her husband to

:04:21.:04:23.

carry out a task no parent would ever ask for. Someone knows

:04:24.:04:27.

something. I'm appealing to all mothers and fathers, please, if you

:04:28.:04:31.

know who is responsible, do the right thing. Contact the police.

:04:32.:04:39.

Please just think if this was your daughter, our family are desperate

:04:40.:04:45.

for answers. Try to understand `` we try to understand how this has

:04:46.:04:51.

happened to our precious Jas. We have new identities, new vehicles

:04:52.:04:55.

being put forward on a daily basis. What I would say was that we have

:04:56.:04:59.

had some people who said they don't believe action is taken. Every lead

:05:00.:05:04.

that has been put forward will be followed through. The extent

:05:05.:05:08.

happened at 9. 20 on Friday night. There are reports that Jasmine,

:05:09.:05:12.

known as Jazzy to her friends, was able to push a younger girl out of

:05:13.:05:15.

the way of the car before this hit her. In the days since Jasmine died,

:05:16.:05:20.

the pile of flowers and toys placed at the scene of the accident has

:05:21.:05:24.

continued to grow. The messages on the cards reveal a portrait of a

:05:25.:05:27.

young woman held in great affection by so many. Now people who live

:05:28.:05:32.

around the sight of the road crossing, want to see a safety

:05:33.:05:37.

improvement. Put your comments as well please. 5,000 signatures will

:05:38.:05:41.

be needed on this petition to secure a council debate on the matter. Most

:05:42.:05:46.

vehicles speed down here. Nobody adheres to the 30mph limit. So what

:05:47.:05:52.

do you do? Obviously, I'm not an expert, but it warrants either speed

:05:53.:06:01.

bumps, some form of warning. As a family, we are all heartbroken. I

:06:02.:06:09.

don't know how we will ever get over losing our precious Jasmyn. Please

:06:10.:06:13.

if you know something, come forward now. She was a loving, friendly

:06:14.:06:19.

girl, who was just so giving. Their difficult appeal made, Jasmine's

:06:20.:06:23.

family now have to wait for answers. How long will depend on the driver

:06:24.:06:26.

or their family doing the right thing.

:06:27.:06:34.

In other news, a drugs trafficker from Sheffield has been sentenced to

:06:35.:06:41.

20 years in prison for running an international

:06:42.:06:43.

heroin and cocaine ring. 50`year`old Craig Allen, who lived in Thailand,

:06:44.:06:49.

was described as a "major league supplier" who distributed drugs

:06:50.:06:52.

across the UK. Allen was tracked down in Amsterdam, after a four`year

:06:53.:06:55.

investigation. Four other people who worked with him were sentenced to

:06:56.:06:59.

between six and 18 years in jail. The judge said the sentences took

:07:00.:07:02.

into account the vast quantities of drugs involved.

:07:03.:07:04.

We're delighted with the sentences passed today. They really do reflect

:07:05.:07:10.

the seriousness of the criminality that Craig Allen and his organised

:07:11.:07:14.

crime group were involved in, perpetrating the movement of

:07:15.:07:16.

controlled drugs into the communities of South Yorkshire, from

:07:17.:07:19.

the other side of the world. That shows and demonstrates the level of

:07:20.:07:23.

sophistication and determination that Craig Allen had and his 20`year

:07:24.:07:28.

sentence is indicative of his criminality.

:07:29.:07:33.

drugs involved. There's been a big drop in the

:07:34.:07:37.

numbers of unemployed in Yorkshire . Figures for the period between

:07:38.:07:40.

January and March show there were 230,000 people without a job. That's

:07:41.:07:42.

10,000 fewer than the previous quarter. The regional

:07:43.:07:45.

unemployment rate is now 8.3% the second highest in Britain.

:07:46.:07:51.

A 21`year`old man has admitted posting a grossly offensive message

:07:52.:07:53.

on Facebook after the fatal stabbing of a teacher in Leeds.

:07:54.:07:56.

Jake Newsome from Harehills wrote the message on the social networking

:07:57.:08:01.

site a few days after Ann Maguire was killed. He's been warned he

:08:02.:08:05.

could face jail when he's sentenced next month.

:08:06.:08:08.

Meanwhile it's been confirmed the funeral of Ann Maguire will be held

:08:09.:08:12.

in Leeds on Friday. The 61`year`old died, after being stabbed in front

:08:13.:08:15.

of pupils in a classroom at Corpus Christi Catholic College last month.

:08:16.:08:18.

A private service for family and friends will take place at her local

:08:19.:08:25.

church in Moortown. People living near the Yorkshire

:08:26.:08:27.

cricket ground at Headingley have told Look North they're concerned

:08:28.:08:30.

about plans for new floodlights. The club says the lights are needed

:08:31.:08:34.

to secure the ground's future as a venue for Test match cricket.

:08:35.:08:38.

Residents want the new lights to be retractable, but the club says that

:08:39.:08:40.

would be too expensive. We don't oppose that kind of

:08:41.:08:48.

development in principle, we realise that it is difficult for them to

:08:49.:08:53.

operate, but they have to make the extra effort and find the extra

:08:54.:08:57.

money in order to be able to create masts which will be tolerable for

:08:58.:09:02.

the residents. Telescopic lights cost in the region of 1. ?1.5

:09:03.:09:08.

million. We haven't got the extra 1. ?1.5 million to do the retractible

:09:09.:09:13.

ones. Those would be ideal but the money is not there. A formal process

:09:14.:09:16.

of redundancies has begun at Leeds United football club. The club is

:09:17.:09:21.

losing more than ?1 million a movement it's not clear how many

:09:22.:09:24.

staff at Elland Road are losing their jobs. We understand they

:09:25.:09:27.

include the head of media and communications, as well as other

:09:28.:09:30.

commercial personnel. A public meeting will be held

:09:31.:09:34.

tonight about the future of urgent care services in Scarborough and

:09:35.:09:38.

Ryedale. Protests took place two years ago against plans to cut the

:09:39.:09:43.

opening hours at the minor injuries unit at Malton Hospital. The local

:09:44.:09:47.

clinical commissioning group says it wants to close the unit and a

:09:48.:09:51.

walk`in centre in Scarborough and replace them with two urgent care

:09:52.:09:55.

centres. 700 people have taken part in a consultation and the outcomes

:09:56.:09:59.

will be revealed tonight. Now, CCTV images of a group of

:10:00.:10:03.

uniformed men entering a Bradford mosque is part of a campaign to

:10:04.:10:08.

spread a Christian message, have been released to the BBC. The group

:10:09.:10:11.

called Britain First walked into the mosque last weekend, where they

:10:12.:10:15.

confronted the Imam, who was alone in the building. A delegation from

:10:16.:10:18.

the mosque will travel to London tomorrow to discuss what happened

:10:19.:10:24.

with a Government minister. Is this the moment when a small

:10:25.:10:29.

political group's protest overstepped the mark? CCTV footage

:10:30.:10:34.

released to the BBC, shows a group of uniformed men and one woman going

:10:35.:10:39.

into Bradford's Westgate mosque. They walk around, leave a Bible,

:10:40.:10:44.

then enter the main hall without removing their shoes. They're

:10:45.:10:48.

members of Britain First and they also made their own video of the

:10:49.:10:53.

unannounced visit. Their actions have offended worshippers in the

:10:54.:10:56.

city. One of this mosque's trustees told me how the Imam is upset about

:10:57.:11:02.

what happened. He now feels that this was almost like a military

:11:03.:11:07.

operation, they were very aggressive. He even uses the kind

:11:08.:11:15.

of, like they were from the armed forces that came and violated his

:11:16.:11:21.

space. Prayers have continued since the weekend, but some fear the

:11:22.:11:26.

uninvited group could return. Around a quarter of Bradford's population

:11:27.:11:31.

are Muslim. Tens of thousands attend mosques like this one. What happened

:11:32.:11:37.

at the weekend has left many feeling very concerned, not just here, but

:11:38.:11:42.

across the city. Britain First are a far`right political group, who broke

:11:43.:11:46.

away from the British National Party. Their own video of the visit

:11:47.:11:50.

to Bradford last Saturday, includes this confrontation with the Imam.

:11:51.:11:56.

Jesus Christ our Lord wants to save Frau hell. West Yorkshire Police are

:11:57.:11:59.

investigating what happened and say: Worshippers have been left unnerved

:12:00.:12:15.

by the invasion of the mosque. Leaving the Bible was clearly

:12:16.:12:20.

designed to provoke. I've been reading through this over the last

:12:21.:12:26.

few days. Nowhere do I find that the Bible is teaching them to go about

:12:27.:12:35.

invadeing other people's property or disrespecting others' religion.

:12:36.:12:40.

Tomorrow he will meet with the Government's cohesion minister to

:12:41.:12:44.

discuss the incident. The far`right group have said they plan to return

:12:45.:12:52.

to Yorkshire. We're joined now by Right Reverend

:12:53.:12:56.

Nick Baines. He was previous live the bishop of Bradford. Britain

:12:57.:13:04.

First call this a Christian crusade, is it? No, it isn't. Actually, if

:13:05.:13:09.

you took the Christian Gospel seriously, you wouldn't behave in

:13:10.:13:12.

this way. You certainly don't enter other people's places of worship and

:13:13.:13:16.

intimidate them in that way. Had it been the `` been the other way round

:13:17.:13:20.

and a group of Muslims had gone into a church with the Koran would there

:13:21.:13:24.

have been more public outcry? I don't know if there would have been

:13:25.:13:28.

a public outcry, but people wouldn't have been happy with that. It might

:13:29.:13:31.

have had a different sort of response. You just don't behave like

:13:32.:13:36.

that. It's just extremely unhelpful. Especially in a place where the

:13:37.:13:40.

relationships are very good between Christians and Muslims. Clearly,

:13:41.:13:44.

it's a fairly inflammatory thing to do. Some in the Muslim community

:13:45.:13:49.

have said, you know Bradford should remain calm. Can you understand that

:13:50.:13:54.

tensions may be ` have risen through this? I don't think tensions have

:13:55.:13:59.

risen but you can understand why people in the Muslim community would

:14:00.:14:04.

feel vulnerable because of this. But I think their response has been `

:14:05.:14:09.

don't rise to it. That's what happens to bullies. You give them

:14:10.:14:12.

what they want. The best thing to do is keep it calm, keep it down and

:14:13.:14:17.

don't rise to the How do bait. You get together to really reassure each

:14:18.:14:21.

other that things are OK? I think that is happening already. Over the

:14:22.:14:30.

weekend, I was in touch with a friend of mine and the Imam, and the

:14:31.:14:34.

acting bishop has been in touch as well. We have made statements of

:14:35.:14:38.

support. We are in it together, to quote George Osborne. I think that's

:14:39.:14:42.

OK. The relationships in Bradford are strong because we work on them

:14:43.:14:46.

when times are good. You don't wait until they're bad and then try to

:14:47.:14:50.

bring it all together. We support one another and we encourage one

:14:51.:14:53.

another. I don't think that will change. Talking about vulnerability

:14:54.:14:58.

there. There is talk of stepping up security in the mosques, maybe

:14:59.:15:01.

security guards there or opening just for prayer times. Do you not

:15:02.:15:04.

think that may segregate the community? I don't know about

:15:05.:15:09.

segregating the community. If people feel under threat, they feel

:15:10.:15:13.

vulnerable, then they can retreat. I think if we can avoid that, it would

:15:14.:15:21.

be very helpful. Of course, you understand if they say, we would

:15:22.:15:24.

like a couple of guys on the door to ensure this doesn't happen. Nick

:15:25.:15:27.

Baines, thank you very much for joining us. Before 7pm: She found

:15:28.:15:33.

fame on the BBC's great British Sewing Bee. We talk to Julie

:15:34.:15:39.

Grommett to find out what happened once the cameras went away. When

:15:40.:15:45.

you've got to go, you've got to go. This toilet really can go. These

:15:46.:15:48.

gentlemen here won't settle for being number two, they want to be

:15:49.:15:51.

number one. They're going for a world record attempt on the fastest

:15:52.:15:52.

loo. Only on Look North! Was he plumb

:15:53.:16:05.

being new depths there? Oh, Phil, let's move on. How's your sowing? I

:16:06.:16:13.

spend most nights darning my socks. I do struggle to sew even a button,

:16:14.:16:18.

but another Yorkshire lass hasn't got the issues I have. Julie

:16:19.:16:22.

Grommett's northern charm won hearts when she appeared on the Great

:16:23.:16:25.

British Sewing Bee this year. Now she's launching her own clothing

:16:26.:16:30.

line. She's joined forces with the tailor from Castleford, who's

:16:31.:16:38.

dressed Royals and TV stars. It's a new take on flatcaps and tweed waist

:16:39.:16:44.

coats, which I rather fancy. Julie's skills were borne out of

:16:45.:16:47.

necessity when her daughter took up ballroom dancing. The the diamonte

:16:48.:16:54.

has stayed but the fabric has changed. Tweed is something I've

:16:55.:16:58.

loved. For the last few years I've made my own growths. When I came off

:16:59.:17:02.

the Sewing Bee, everybody mentioned the clothes I were wearing in a

:17:03.:17:05.

positive way. I thought, well, maybe we could do something about it.

:17:06.:17:08.

Maybe there's a market for the kind of clothes that I wear. I like it. I

:17:09.:17:16.

don't like it. I think the colours are horrible. My colours are boring.

:17:17.:17:21.

Straight talking also won her fans and she decide today was new or

:17:22.:17:24.

never. In just five weeks she's managed to pull together her own

:17:25.:17:28.

line of tweeds, much of it aimed at the under ones. Too much for one

:17:29.:17:34.

person, she's teamed up with a local tailor, who's had his own share of

:17:35.:17:37.

fame and had been thinking of retiring. Yeah, we've done for the

:17:38.:17:40.

Royals as well. We've done for Savile Row. She's a Castler, so

:17:41.:17:48.

we've got to lock after her. For a couple of weeks, the traditional

:17:49.:17:51.

men's trousers have given way to rather smaller garments. It's been a

:17:52.:17:56.

challenge, but the real issue is what happens if the line takes off?

:17:57.:18:00.

We can do it. We've got here, we're lucky, we have a waiting list of

:18:01.:18:04.

girls wanting to come because nobody ever leaves. I've got one girl down

:18:05.:18:08.

stairs, she's been here since she were 15 and she's 50 now. We're like

:18:09.:18:15.

a family. So, we can take more people on, if we have to. For Julie,

:18:16.:18:19.

whose day job is as a housing officer, it's been a whirlwind that

:18:20.:18:23.

could one day become a fulltime career. You know, all these big

:18:24.:18:30.

companies, the Barbers of the world, they all start somewhere. There's

:18:31.:18:33.

nothing to say it couldn't happen to us. We could be ape household name.

:18:34.:18:42.

One up heard here first. Baby tweed, I love it.

:18:43.:18:45.

I've been predicting a comeback for tweed for a long time. Can you

:18:46.:18:49.

imagine me in tweed? Would you need a deer stalker? Very middle class.

:18:50.:18:54.

Not you. Strictly working class, me. I feel we should apologise in

:18:55.:18:57.

advance for the toilet talk coming up. A man from Brighouse is hoping

:18:58.:19:04.

he can beat a world land speed record on a motorised toilet.

:19:05.:19:10.

Trevor Duckworth has held 50 national and world records and hopes

:19:11.:19:15.

he will be flushed with success this weekend, when his converted go`cart

:19:16.:19:21.

loo takes to a track. Who else could we send other than our bog standard

:19:22.:19:25.

reporter Ian White to meet him. Stop it! Meet Shawn and Trevor, they're

:19:26.:19:31.

men on ape mission. They just love speed. They're at this work shop in

:19:32.:19:35.

Brighouse to put the finishing touches to the latest vehicle that's

:19:36.:19:40.

hopefully going to be a world record breaker, a toilet on a go`kart.

:19:41.:19:47.

This is their inspiration, a speed attempt by a Canadian and a world

:19:48.:19:52.

record of 55mph achieved in Australia. I know what you're

:19:53.:19:57.

thinking, I bet this is not a real toilet. You're wrong, because it

:19:58.:20:01.

does actually flush. Whoa, look at this. But it's not connected up.

:20:02.:20:07.

Nearly caught my pants down there. The motorised toilet is an idea we

:20:08.:20:12.

had in the local pub on the back of a beer mat. We decided we could

build something of entertainment value so we could have a laugh.

:20:18.:20:24.

Trevor's no stranger to danger. We featured him on Look North in 1986,

:20:25.:20:29.

going for a record on this three`wheeler. His work shop is full

:20:30.:20:33.

of trophies and certificates, 21 world records and 28 national ones.

:20:34.:20:38.

It's his friend Shawn who has a big job on his hands this weekend. We

:20:39.:20:42.

have a toilet brush here, which hopefully I won't need to use and

:20:43.:20:46.

toilet paper here, which again, I'm hoping it stays on the What's it

:20:47.:20:50.

roll. Like when it's on the track and going? Scary? I wouldn't say

:20:51.:20:55.

scary, it's not great, though. Because you're sat high up and

:20:56.:20:59.

you're on top of the toilet, it's quite skittish. It tends to one to

:21:00.:21:04.

throw you off. You're clinging on, appropriately I'll keep the lid up,

:21:05.:21:09.

I think. Don't get caught short, the world record attempt takes place

:21:10.:21:13.

this weekend. Come on Shawn. Be a gentleman and

:21:14.:21:23.

put the seat down. Like my mother. I find myself putting the lid down

:21:24.:21:27.

at my house. That's handy, from one item about toilets, here's a man

:21:28.:21:35.

used to talking out of his backside. Will there be a skid chicane one?

:21:36.:21:40.

He's lowered the tone. He's lower class. Let's show you tlie pictures

:21:41.:21:45.

that came in the last 24 hours. That's beautiful.

:21:46.:22:15.

Keep the pictures coming in. The fine weather will last. Tomorrow

:22:16.:22:24.

more in the way of cloud pushing in from the west. So variable cloud.

:22:25.:22:28.

There will be warm, sunny spells. High pressure in charge. Friday

:22:29.:22:32.

looks a cracking day with a lot of sunshine and highs of 21 Celsius. On

:22:33.:22:38.

the satellite picture, can you see the cloud held off to the west. 17

:22:39.:22:44.

degrees Celsius. This cloud is associated with a weak warm front.

:22:45.:22:48.

It will push eastwards overnight. It is a fine and sunny evening across

:22:49.:22:53.

Yorkshire. That cloud will continue to thicken overnight. Just perhaps

:22:54.:22:57.

bringing a few spots of drizzle a little bit of mistiness and low

:22:58.:23:01.

cloud to the Yorkshire Dales. Further east it's going to be dry.

:23:02.:23:04.

Lowest temperatures coming in at seven or eight Celsius. So, the sun

:23:05.:23:16.

will rise in the morning at 5. 05, setting at just after 9pm. At the

:23:17.:23:19.

coast tomorrow a lovely day. The odd spot of drizzle and light

:23:20.:23:31.

shower is possible in the morning. Most of us will be dry. Mistiness

:23:32.:23:35.

over the Pennines. Generally a lot more cloud. Through the day this

:23:36.:23:38.

cloud will thin and break. The afternoon should brighten up nicely

:23:39.:23:42.

with sunshine. The sunshine might be hazy, quite a bit of medium and

:23:43.:23:48.

high`level cloud tomorrow. The warm front coming through tonight help

:23:49.:23:53.

with temperatures. Highs of 17 degrees in Scarborough. That's a big

:23:54.:23:59.

improvement. 18, possibly 19, possible west or south York. ``

:24:00.:24:07.

Yorkshire. Friday, less cloud again, more in the way of sunshine. A

:24:08.:24:10.

beautiful day, 21 Celsius the high. All parts will be dry. Temperatures

:24:11.:24:14.

holding on through Friday evening. Saturday a lovely day. Chance of a

:24:15.:24:17.

shower Saturday afternoon. Still a lot of uncertainty. The break down

:24:18.:24:21.

comes some time on Sunday. At the moment, it might be later rather

:24:22.:24:24.

than sooner. A nice spell of weather.

:24:25.:24:28.

Before we go, we return to our main story, the late eon the Claudia

:24:29.:24:32.

Lawrence investigation in York. John, I gather there's been some

:24:33.:24:35.

developments within the last few minutes? That's right. Since we've

:24:36.:24:40.

been on the air, North Yorkshire Police have announced that the

:24:41.:24:45.

59`year`old man they arrested at 8am yesterday morning on suspicion of

:24:46.:24:48.

the murder of Claudia Lawrence has this evening been released from

:24:49.:24:53.

police custody on conditional bail. He had been in custody for 36 hours,

:24:54.:24:58.

but tonight, he's been released on conditional bail and that was the

:24:59.:25:02.

statement we got within the last few minutes from North Yorkshire Police.

:25:03.:25:06.

John, live in York, thank you very much.

:25:07.:25:09.

Of course, we'll have further updates on that developing story

:25:10.:25:13.

through the course of the evening. A man who's been questioned by the

:25:14.:25:18.

police in connection with the disappearance of Claudia Lawrence

:25:19.:25:22.

has been released on bail. If you need, can you get more on BBC Radio

:25:23.:25:26.

York as well. They are on air live now. Our Facebook page is up and

running. There's e`mail as well. That's the way that you can get in

:25:47.:25:50.

anything you've seen on the programme. Twitter is@BBClooknorth.

We will be back at 10. 25pm. Good night.
