On the programme tonight, wd're with the Yorkshire veterans remelbering | :00:00. | :00:09.
We'll be live in Normandy, where 70th anniversary commemorathons have | :00:10. | :00:14.
It has been emotional but, what else can you do but think about ht? | :00:15. | :00:17.
I lost some good friends, I really did. | :00:18. | :00:20.
Hundreds turn out in Sheffidld for the funeral | :00:21. | :00:28.
Heavy thundery downpours tolorrow. I will see you later. | :00:29. | :01:00.
Seven Yorkshire D`Day veter`ns have returned to the Normandy | :01:01. | :01:02.
The men were teenagers or vdry young men when they went to Francd | :01:03. | :01:08.
They've spent the last two days revisiting the places they fought | :01:09. | :01:14.
Olivia Richwald has been tr`velling with them and has been in the town | :01:15. | :01:19.
of Arromanches this evening, the focus of the D`Day commeror`tions. | :01:20. | :01:24.
What an amazing few days it has been in Normandy. | :01:25. | :01:27.
Looking at the beach now it is hard to believe this was ever | :01:28. | :01:31.
And it has been an absolute privilege to follow | :01:32. | :01:35.
the veterans from North Yorkshire on their journey back here. | :01:36. | :01:38.
What has been the best thing is the response they have had | :01:39. | :01:41.
Their coach has been clapped as it was driven through villages | :01:42. | :01:46.
and they have had their picture taken hundreds of times. | :01:47. | :01:48.
Douglas, Roy, Ken Cook, Ken Smith, Frank, George and Burt. | :01:49. | :02:13.
Seven decades ago, these sdven men landed on the Normandy | :02:14. | :02:16.
For most of these North Yorkshire D`Day veter`ns, | :02:17. | :02:32.
He laid a flag in memory of the mates he lost. | :02:33. | :02:40.
A bit emotional but what else can you do but think about ht? | :02:41. | :02:44.
And I lost some good friends, I really did. | :02:45. | :02:49.
We were all 'Saturday night soldiers', as they used to call us! | :02:50. | :02:59.
Ken Cook was taken back to the exact spot he landed 70 years | :03:00. | :03:04.
All hell broke loose, rockets going everywhere, warships belting away. | :03:05. | :03:11.
This is his battalion's Memorial in Crepon, just in land. | :03:12. | :03:23.
Because there were not many of us left now. | :03:24. | :03:29.
This is a chance to say goodbye then? | :03:30. | :03:33.
But after a while, you tend to not become scared, but resigned to | :03:34. | :03:57.
the fact that you are not going to make it through the day. | :03:58. | :04:01.
I'm not ashamed to say that I do shed a tear. | :04:02. | :04:04.
Not because I am an old chap, but because of the memories that keep | :04:05. | :04:08.
In a small cemetery, where 600 British soldiers `nd | :04:09. | :04:18.
sailors are buried, the vetdrans gathered to say private praxers | :04:19. | :04:34.
When I see all these lying down in front of me I feel lucky to be | :04:35. | :04:39.
I have always believed and still believe that I'm hn God's | :04:40. | :04:48.
hands and I walked off that beach because of that. | :04:49. | :04:57.
For North Yorkshire's veter`ns, a pilgrimage to Normandy has not | :04:58. | :04:59.
It has also been about celebrating the sacrifices made here and how | :05:00. | :05:06.
they led to 70 years of freddom for seven brave and very grateftl men. | :05:07. | :05:15.
Well, that is where our veterans are right now. | :05:16. | :05:18.
They are in the big square hn the centre of Arromanches and have | :05:19. | :05:21.
Earlier today they were at the cemetery where some | :05:22. | :05:25.
of them met David Cameron, while others were chatting to | :05:26. | :05:28.
Prince Charles and some of them were interviewed by Dan Snow. | :05:29. | :05:32.
So over the past two days there has been a mixture of celebration | :05:33. | :05:36.
and sadness and what they told me is their greatest wish is that | :05:37. | :05:40.
the sacrifice their generathon made, is never forgotten. | :05:41. | :05:48.
Hundreds of people, including many school children, | :05:49. | :05:50.
gathered in Sheffield today for the funeral of 14`year`old Jasmxn Chan. | :05:51. | :05:54.
The teenager was killed in a hit`and`run accident | :05:55. | :05:56.
Today, tributes were paid to the young woman, who was described | :05:57. | :06:01.
A glorious, sunlit morning in Sheffield's City Road Celetery. | :06:02. | :06:10.
This silence is broken by the approach of a horse`drawn c`rriage | :06:11. | :06:13.
Her friends, young, old, entire families, all wait qtietly. | :06:14. | :06:21.
A patchwork of vibrant colotrs against a sombre occasion. | :06:22. | :06:25.
A day to remember, reflect `nd give thanks for a life lived selflessly. | :06:26. | :06:31.
Today's important for all of us because it is about thanking and | :06:32. | :06:35.
looking back and taking the good things Jasmyn has given to dach of | :06:36. | :06:39.
us and building them into hdr living legacy so that we can all move on, | :06:40. | :06:44.
taking that legacy and building it into our lives so that we, hn some | :06:45. | :06:48.
measure, take what she has given to others and help it continue to grow. | :06:49. | :06:53.
It is a month since the teenager was killdd. | :06:54. | :06:56.
She was crossing Normanton Hill in Sheffield where she was struck | :06:57. | :06:59.
She was able to push another girl clear | :07:00. | :07:02.
The driver did not stop and the police investigation continues. | :07:03. | :07:07.
Against so many emotions, today's words from teachers, | :07:08. | :07:11.
friends and family celebratdd a life taken too soon. | :07:12. | :07:15.
She was kind and thoughtful ` and she was cheeky. | :07:16. | :07:23.
Her long hair was beautiful, but she could not wait to cut it off. | :07:24. | :07:27.
And when she did, her confidence just blossomdd. | :07:28. | :07:31.
She was truly beautiful, inside and out. | :07:32. | :07:36.
This was described as a hero's send off, no less than Jasmyn deserves. | :07:37. | :07:40.
Her family would never have wished for today, but that it should be | :07:41. | :07:43.
wrapped in such love, affection and esteem, can only be a comfort. | :07:44. | :07:55.
Louis Tomlinson's made millhons as part of pop group One Direction | :07:56. | :08:02.
` now he's putting cash back into his home town's football club. | :08:03. | :08:09.
There's a blow for the organisers of the Tour de France here | :08:10. | :08:14.
in Yorkshire, with the annotncement that Sir Bradley Wiggins will not be | :08:15. | :08:17.
The cyclist, who won the prestigious race in 2012, | :08:18. | :08:22.
admitted that he was "gutted" not to be picked to ride for Te`m Sky. | :08:23. | :08:25.
And it's disappointing for Welcome to Yorkshire who won | :08:26. | :08:28.
the bid to stage the Tour, following the British cyclist's | :08:29. | :08:31.
Our Tour Correspondent, Matt Slater, joins us from Langsett, which is | :08:32. | :08:35.
I am right here on the routd and we know now we will not be seen Bradley | :08:36. | :08:46.
Wiggins here. It is a big blow, it is a big blow for him and for the | :08:47. | :08:50.
race. It is a big blow for lillions of cycling fans in the UK. But | :08:51. | :08:55.
history tells us that if yotr team going for the yellow jersey, in the | :08:56. | :08:59.
overall competition you can only have one leader. The had bedn | :09:00. | :09:03.
exceptions, but those races have tended to be dramatic. Team Sky does | :09:04. | :09:09.
not like drama. It was Wigghns and now it is somebody else. Thhs is how | :09:10. | :09:18.
Wiggins broke the news. I h`ve worked hard for this. Up to | :09:19. | :09:23.
California and winning that. I feel I'm in the form I was two ydars ago | :09:24. | :09:28.
at the 2012 Tour de France. I also understand that cycling is ` team | :09:29. | :09:32.
sport and that at the end of the day, it is about the team whnning | :09:33. | :09:42.
and that team is Team Sky. What is welcome to Yorkshire had to say | :09:43. | :09:47.
They are disappointed. Wigghns is the most famous British cyclist we | :09:48. | :09:51.
have. He's the first Brit to win this race, too. He opened the | :09:52. | :09:55.
Olympic games in 2012 and as a knighthood. But what the organisers | :09:56. | :09:58.
want to stress is that they have lost the star, but this is `n epic | :09:59. | :10:05.
with a cast of thousands. From a selfish point of view, I | :10:06. | :10:08.
disappointed that Bradley whll not be at the start in Leeds on the 5th | :10:09. | :10:12.
of July. In winning in 2012 was one of the reasons the Tour de France is | :10:13. | :10:17.
going back to the UK. And Bradley will always be the first Brhtish | :10:18. | :10:20.
winner and he will have othdr opportunities to write the Tour de | :10:21. | :10:24.
France in the future. But there will be other people disappointed that he | :10:25. | :10:27.
is not starting, but once wd get over that, we will be excitdd about | :10:28. | :10:33.
the fractal that room is a defending champion and we will be rooting for | :10:34. | :10:40.
him. That was very much the view from the top. I'm now joined by some | :10:41. | :10:45.
cycling fans. Alistair, how much of a disappointment is this th`t | :10:46. | :10:50.
Wiggins will not be here. It is a great disappointment person`lly | :10:51. | :10:54.
He's a great personality. It is great for the tour to being | :10:55. | :10:56.
Yorkshire and one of the re`sons it is here is down to the interest | :10:57. | :11:00.
generated by the success people like Bradley Wiggins. So yes, a huge | :11:01. | :11:06.
disappointment. Are you a bhg fan of Wiggins? I was looking forw`rd to | :11:07. | :11:16.
seeing him here. So, yes, it is a disappointment. I will try to raise | :11:17. | :11:21.
the mood later in the progr`mme with some fine dining. | :11:22. | :11:26.
And if you want more inform`tion about the Tour, there's lots online. | :11:27. | :11:29.
Just go to the Tour de France section of your local BBC wdbsite. | :11:30. | :11:41.
The family of a Yorkshire b`ckpacker have to wait another few daxs for | :11:42. | :11:44.
the identification of a bodx which was found in the Malaysian jungle. | :11:45. | :11:48.
DNA samples have been given by Gareth Huntley's mother | :11:49. | :11:50.
so doctors can say for sure if it is the 34`year`old from Leeds. | :11:51. | :11:54.
Tests from a post`mortem ex`mination didn't find a cause of death. | :11:55. | :11:57.
The Environment Agency says it's working with the fire service to | :11:58. | :11:59.
tackle an ongoing fire at a wood recycling plant near Barnsldy. | :12:00. | :12:03.
The fire, close to Crow Edgd village near Penistone, | :12:04. | :12:05.
The fire service says they'll be at the site for several days yet. | :12:06. | :12:10.
Residents are being advised to keep their doors and windows closed. | :12:11. | :12:14.
The Environment Agency is working to prevent a nearby watercoursd | :12:15. | :12:17.
from being affected by polltted water drained from the site. | :12:18. | :12:22.
Barnsley Hospital has been told to take urgent action to plug ` ?7 5 | :12:23. | :12:26.
The hospital regulator Monitor has also asked the Trust to bring | :12:27. | :12:31.
in external help to resolve the situation. | :12:32. | :12:33.
Our Health Correspondent Jalie Coulson has the story. | :12:34. | :12:42.
Barnsley Hospital has been tnder investigation is the end of March, | :12:43. | :12:48.
when the trust declared a sdrious incident into financial | :12:49. | :12:50.
irregularities and a failurd to meet Government targets on A w`iting | :12:51. | :12:58.
times. The Trust as a budget of more than ?153 million and until | :12:59. | :13:01.
February, was expected to end the year in surplus. But on the 31st of | :13:02. | :13:05.
March, it became apparent they were heading for a ?2.3 million deficit | :13:06. | :13:09.
and today, it was confirmed that overspend was even worse th`n | :13:10. | :13:15.
originally thought and 7.5 lillion. The Trust also failed to medt the | :13:16. | :13:21.
Government's waiting times on five occasions in 18 months. This | :13:22. | :13:25.
prompted further investigathon. Today, the hospital regulator can | :13:26. | :13:29.
macro monitor told the trust it needs to take urgent action on | :13:30. | :13:33.
bringing external help to rdsolve the problems of its finances and | :13:34. | :13:38.
with AMD. Hospital managers will also have to develop a two`xear | :13:39. | :13:42.
recovery plan, something ond local MP believes is vital to restore | :13:43. | :13:48.
trust. It is worrying, people expect a degree of management to oversee | :13:49. | :13:53.
these important issues. That is why it is important now that thhs | :13:54. | :13:56.
hospital restores confidencd and makes sure people can have trust in | :13:57. | :14:00.
the leadership and organisation of them. I think they will do that | :14:01. | :14:05.
Barnsley Hospital set the t`king the findings seriously and have already | :14:06. | :14:09.
taken action to tackle some of the issues. They are keen to stress | :14:10. | :14:12.
their financial problems do not impact on patient care. | :14:13. | :14:19.
A hundred years of the Womens' Institute | :14:20. | :14:21.
and the organisation's moving on from its Jam Jerusalem image. | :14:22. | :14:24.
We meet the next generation of WI`ers who are shaking it all up. | :14:25. | :14:34.
Join me later to find out how many calories a pro cyclist needs every | :14:35. | :14:38.
day. Football now, and earlier | :14:39. | :14:43.
in the week we heard about the possibility of One Direction | :14:44. | :14:46.
pop star Louis Tomlinson taking over We were expecting that deal to | :14:47. | :14:48.
complete today ` but it looks We thought there would be a big | :14:49. | :15:06.
press conference but it has not happened. There was a slight hiccup | :15:07. | :15:12.
over image rights. Over Louhs's image rights. This is a novdl for a | :15:13. | :15:16.
pub or club takeover. The ddal has been agreed with the actual | :15:17. | :15:19.
takeover, those kind of things being ironed out and he will becole | :15:20. | :15:23.
co`chairman with the former owner John Ryan if everything goes | :15:24. | :15:26.
through. This should happen about mid week next week. He obviously | :15:27. | :15:34.
wants to take this, because he is a fan of the club. He also pl`yed as a | :15:35. | :15:40.
sub in a charity match and hs actually registered there. So it is | :15:41. | :15:43.
a dream for him to take over. Hopefully he will. | :15:44. | :15:46.
In the search for a new coach, Leeds United are understood to be | :15:47. | :15:50.
interviewing former player `nd manager Gary McAllister tomorrow. | :15:51. | :15:52.
McAllister won the 1992 Chalpionship title with Leeds as a player | :15:53. | :15:55.
and took the club to the Le`gue One Play`Off final as manager in 20 8. | :15:56. | :15:59.
Owner Massimo Cellino says he wants a British coach in charge | :16:00. | :16:02.
Last night, Keighley lost ott to Widnes and on Sunday, Bradford take | :16:03. | :16:18.
on Warrington. Tomorrow, Castleford are looking to knock out thd | :16:19. | :16:25.
reigning champions, Wigan. Ht is important we go and do oursdlves | :16:26. | :16:33.
justice. Wigan are a superb team and club and we are looking forward to | :16:34. | :16:37.
the challenge. These are thd challenges that you really `re in | :16:38. | :16:42.
rugby league for. They get the best out of you. By game is live on BBC | :16:43. | :16:52.
One at 2pm. Right now, Lanc`shire batting first and have made an | :16:53. | :16:56.
impressive start with some big hitting earlier on Yorkshird have | :16:57. | :17:06.
paid them back in the 12 off. I would love to see all the sports | :17:07. | :17:09.
journalist mixing with one direction fans today! | :17:10. | :17:14.
This weekend, Leeds plays host to the Annual General Meeting | :17:15. | :17:17.
The organisation is nearly a hundred years old and has more | :17:18. | :17:21.
In Yorkshire, The Calendar Girls are its most famous members. | :17:22. | :17:24.
They put the WI back in the headlines and may have | :17:25. | :17:27.
If you expected blue rinse hs, think again. This is the modern look of | :17:28. | :17:46.
the Women's Institute in Huddersfield. It looks pretty | :17:47. | :17:49.
alternative. But when the mdeting comes to order... The reasstring | :17:50. | :17:58.
tradition is preserved. The group call themselves be and tarts. They | :17:59. | :18:03.
might mean to the tackle salary for a typical meeting. The WIA hn | :18:04. | :18:08.
Yorkshire is growing, so wh`t is the appeal? why not? Is found that the | :18:09. | :18:14.
sort of thing I would like to do. We were very small before, there was | :18:15. | :18:21.
only about 20 of us. I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are peopld of all | :18:22. | :18:27.
ages and all walks of life. Deceiving's task is to decorate a | :18:28. | :18:30.
WIA logo and photographed the browsers for the group's website. | :18:31. | :18:38.
The idea is to get creative. When I walk in the door, I know I'l good to | :18:39. | :18:42.
learn something new. I know I'm going to join in with something new | :18:43. | :18:47.
and meet new people. That is joyous! The two whole hours, it is | :18:48. | :18:53.
jolly. A lot more joyous th`n the first habitation of the past. But | :18:54. | :18:58.
Brad that old Jam And Jerus`lem obscured what the WIA reallx is I | :18:59. | :19:04.
found French, support, wit `nd collective wisdom. They madd me feel | :19:05. | :19:10.
welcome. It is for women and inspiring women. It inspires you to | :19:11. | :19:14.
do different things and find your potential and try things out. It | :19:15. | :19:17.
also brings women together. There is such a good thing in doing that | :19:18. | :19:22.
real power in it. I find it powerful anyway. By the end of evening, | :19:23. | :19:27.
collective endeavour and a lot of chats produced a finished logo. In | :19:28. | :19:29.
my humble opinion, it says ht all. Well, joining us now are Rebecca | :19:30. | :19:35.
Cobb`Kilner, the founder of the Huddersfield group Tea Tarts, and | :19:36. | :19:38.
Marylyn Haines Evans, a WI trustee. Tell us what you found that the | :19:39. | :19:54.
orders feel good? Because I didn't know anybody and now I know too many | :19:55. | :20:03.
people! So what did you do? I approached the Berlin tearooms. The | :20:04. | :20:06.
woman on the video I sidled up to her and asked only would john. Tell | :20:07. | :20:14.
me how it has changed Western Mark it has changed incredibly. Ht is | :20:15. | :20:23.
changed in many ways, even recently. The outlook is changed. There are | :20:24. | :20:25.
similar more opportunities now for new members, even if it is learning | :20:26. | :20:32.
or, like Rebecca has said, just going out and having fun. There are | :20:33. | :20:37.
14,000 members who joined this year, since January. So it hs not | :20:38. | :20:45.
just jam and Jerusalem. You have done a nice flowing, car | :20:46. | :20:48.
maintenance, whitewater rafting and welding! It is a very different | :20:49. | :20:53.
image. yes, we like to be active. We do not centre speaker that often | :20:54. | :20:58.
just more traditional. We h`ve activities. We like to do, `nd we | :20:59. | :21:07.
like to throw knives! One credit you do educational things? We do things | :21:08. | :21:11.
different every month. Later this year we have similar to comd and | :21:12. | :21:17.
tell us about highway men. Like Dick Turpin. We are doing women `t war | :21:18. | :21:21.
and even having a Ghostbustdrs nights. In a way, you have not lost | :21:22. | :21:29.
the tradition have you? You still have some of the older things? | :21:30. | :21:35.
Absolutely. I'm from a very small institute in West Wales. We have | :21:36. | :21:40.
about 50 people. But the very formed, as I always say! We have a | :21:41. | :21:45.
whole load of fun at being lembers. Our youngest is 21, our elddst is | :21:46. | :21:52.
90. We all have a member th`t fits into each decade in between I can | :21:53. | :22:03.
join, and you can't! Let us talk about food now. | :22:04. | :22:06.
Now, when it comes to calorhes, imagine being told you had to eat | :22:07. | :22:09.
That's an awful lot of Yorkshire puddings and cream teas. | :22:10. | :22:13.
Well, that's what the elite riders who are cycling | :22:14. | :22:16.
So how do you manage to do that and still cycle up all thosd hills? | :22:17. | :22:22.
Well, we can go back to our Tour de France Correspondent who's | :22:23. | :22:25.
in Langsett, where the Tour goes through on July the 6th, | :22:26. | :22:28.
For this evening's appetiser we have 4000 calories Yorkshire style and | :22:29. | :22:38.
4000 colours on the Team Skx cookbook. I threw myself into the | :22:39. | :22:47.
challenge with gusto! The breakfast of champions! This is a bikdr's | :22:48. | :22:56.
bistro. It is often said arlies march on their stomachs and pros | :22:57. | :22:59.
such as this are no different. This is team Skype's Minister for energy. | :23:00. | :23:07.
So what are we looking at hdre up off a terrible stomachache? What we | :23:08. | :23:14.
have here is actually the Yorkshire version of the Tour de France meal | :23:15. | :23:21.
plan. And here we have a me`l plan that we use in Team Sky. Whx macro | :23:22. | :23:27.
for starters, I am having a dry up, and Chris is having the porridge. | :23:28. | :23:31.
Fish and chips is my post rhght meal, and 40, steak pie and | :23:32. | :23:40.
Yorkshire pudding. You cannot ride 2000 miles in a few weeks whthout a | :23:41. | :23:44.
future eats, or mood food, `s Nigel calls it. It is the thing that makes | :23:45. | :23:52.
people feel happier. If you're just eating healthy food day in day out, | :23:53. | :23:56.
it can get monotonous. Our chef is brilliant and makes it hard to make | :23:57. | :24:01.
it interesting. One thing hd makes is his fill it steak. It is to die | :24:02. | :24:07.
for. He makes home`made burgers too. Even cakes. I'm dying to try | :24:08. | :24:14.
that. So is this just powdered vegetables? We do a lot of vegetable | :24:15. | :24:19.
Jews in. This is a way that they can drink the vegetables. Why m`cro | :24:20. | :24:26.
editor punishment? actually, it tastes very good. I'm giving you a | :24:27. | :24:30.
massive glass of it. It is very good for your stomach. The secret is not | :24:31. | :24:42.
to smell it. Why macro cheers! Changing! So what was in thd Green | :24:43. | :24:58.
stuff? It is a secret. OK, ht is powdered vegetables. It helps the | :24:59. | :25:05.
health of the stomach. How hs Bradley? He is fine. He's a | :25:06. | :25:16.
professional and will have success in the future. | :25:17. | :25:33.
Some very heavy rain coming tomorrow. First, some pictures from | :25:34. | :25:47.
today. This one is of Margaret Lake. This is Leeds city centre. Keep your | :25:48. | :26:00.
pictures coming in. Tomorrow, looks like a dreadful day. Some vdry | :26:01. | :26:04.
heavy, thundery downpours. @ll because we have a plume of very | :26:05. | :26:08.
warm, humid air pushing up from the south. That will really givd the | :26:09. | :26:12.
thunderstorms of energy and kick. The satellite picture from darlier | :26:13. | :26:16.
does not show the higher, mddium level cloud. But it has been a | :26:17. | :26:22.
pleasant day and we got up to 2 and 22 degrees down the Vale of York. It | :26:23. | :26:28.
will be a finite, too. Tempdratures are dropping back to around 12 or 13 | :26:29. | :26:34.
degrees. That's 55 Fahrenheht. The symbol rise in the morning `t | :26:35. | :26:41.
4:38am. High water in Filey will be just after midnight this evdning. | :26:42. | :26:44.
Tomorrow we start the day whth one or two showers creeping up from the | :26:45. | :26:48.
south and they could be heavy early on. But quite quickly, the scattered | :26:49. | :26:52.
showers will merge into a more organised rain which will bd very | :26:53. | :26:56.
heavy and thundery. There whll be some torrential downpours whth | :26:57. | :26:58.
thunder and lightning throughout the day. It should improve towards the | :26:59. | :27:03.
evening and it may well be that towards the end of Saturday will, we | :27:04. | :27:08.
do see an improvement. But ` very warm comic humid and sticky day to | :27:09. | :27:11.
come. Temperatures Coolidge in the rain, but in between, we cotld get | :27:12. | :27:19.
up to around 20 degrees. On Sunday, sunshine and showers. There could be | :27:20. | :27:23.
the odd heavy one, but therd will be far more scattered than thex have | :27:24. | :27:27.
been or will be on Saturday. They could settle down through the second | :27:28. | :27:35.
half of next week. We will be back at 10:25pm. Good night. | :27:36. | :27:56.
The average person moves home eight times during their life. | :27:57. | :28:02.
So that's eight times we have to move the sofa. | :28:03. | :28:06. |
