The heart`breaking video messages recorded by the father from Barnsley | :00:15. | :00:26.
who won't live to see his daughter grow up. | :00:27. | :00:29.
It's something I wanted to do for George, | :00:30. | :00:31.
just so that she's got some memories of who I was and just have some of | :00:32. | :00:34.
those conversations that a normal dad would have with their d`ughter. | :00:35. | :00:37.
A new exhibition in Leeds features photos | :00:38. | :00:41.
You can see the rain clouds building across Yorkshire. What is it looking | :00:42. | :00:56.
like for tomorrow? Join me later in the programme. | :00:57. | :01:03.
Good evening and welcome to Friday's Look North. | :01:04. | :01:05.
Young Muslims in Yorkshire `re being urged by their religious le`ders not | :01:06. | :01:08.
The holy month of Ramadan begins this weekdnd, and | :01:09. | :01:15.
there are fears that it could spark an increase in young men tr`velling | :01:16. | :01:18.
The BBC Asian Network's Shabnam Mahmood has more. | :01:19. | :01:33.
It is a message that is being put out in mosques are crossed | :01:34. | :01:38.
Yorkshire: Don't be tempted to join the fighting in Syria. What we are | :01:39. | :01:46.
saying, is that if you want to help please do not go out there. Don t | :01:47. | :01:52.
expose yourself. Don't put xour lives at risk. This is the reason | :01:53. | :01:57.
why they are so worried. So`called recruitment videos on the Internet | :01:58. | :02:02.
and TV channels, in which British Muslims are allegedly fighthng in | :02:03. | :02:05.
Syria and urging others to join them. It comes at a particularly | :02:06. | :02:12.
sensitive time. This weekend sees the start of Ramadan, the holiest | :02:13. | :02:18.
month of the Muslim calendar when leaders observe fasting. Many fear | :02:19. | :02:29.
it could spark people listening to these videos. Just what do they | :02:30. | :02:38.
think about British fighting in Syria? I think instead of going out | :02:39. | :02:46.
to fight, it is better for ts to celebrate peace instead of fighting | :02:47. | :02:51.
violence with violence. I al a mother of a teenage son mysdlf, and | :02:52. | :02:56.
it is not a worry for me whdn he is going to be poached as one of the | :02:57. | :03:01.
candidates, my worry is mord about his education or whether he will be | :03:02. | :03:07.
joining groups. There is a lot that Muslims could do here in England to | :03:08. | :03:10.
help the people in Syria and there are so many other ways of doing it | :03:11. | :03:16.
than going over there and fhghting. Muslims who want to help people in | :03:17. | :03:20.
Syria are being encouraged to donate agencies working in the reghon. | :03:21. | :03:26.
Security experts say that 500 Britons may be fighting in Syria. | :03:27. | :03:30.
Police say those who do risk being arrested when they return. | :03:31. | :03:34.
Well, Carry Asim is from thd Leeds Makkah Mosque and he joins ts now. | :03:35. | :03:41.
We know about the issues th`t are happening in Cardiff at the moment | :03:42. | :03:47.
with young men going out to Syria. How concerned are you that xoung men | :03:48. | :03:52.
from Yorkshire are going to join the conflict? I think there is generally | :03:53. | :03:57.
be concerned that in the month of Ramadan, the month of sympathy and | :03:58. | :04:03.
empathy of suffering. As a result, some might be thinking about going | :04:04. | :04:06.
to Syria to take part in thd fight. Our message is very simple. Please | :04:07. | :04:13.
do not do it. Don't expose xourself, don't put your lives at risk. Do you | :04:14. | :04:19.
know of any young men who h`ve gone out from Yorkshire? I don't. We find | :04:20. | :04:23.
mostly that radicalisation takes place underground. It's rard that a | :04:24. | :04:28.
message club like that comes from a mosque. Can you what can yot say to | :04:29. | :04:40.
parents whose sons might be thinking about going out? Obviously this is a | :04:41. | :04:48.
very hard thing to discern. We are not saying that there should be a | :04:49. | :04:53.
suspect in culture amongst parents and children, it's more abott making | :04:54. | :04:58.
sure that no one puts his or her life at risk. Is there a message | :04:59. | :05:05.
there to be careful what yot are actually giving to as well, like you | :05:06. | :05:11.
might be giving to a charitx or a cause in Syria? We are saying | :05:12. | :05:17.
humanitarian aid is very important and fun rating should carry on but | :05:18. | :05:23.
please use established charhties `` fund raising. Would it be wrong for | :05:24. | :05:30.
parents to sit down with thdir children now and have that | :05:31. | :05:34.
conversation with them? No, absolutely. I think that | :05:35. | :05:38.
conversation should take pl`ce. On breakfast tables, on dinner tables, | :05:39. | :05:42.
we should be open about it. How can we reach a in amicable political | :05:43. | :05:48.
solution to this crisis. Th`nk you for joining us. | :05:49. | :05:51.
Every parent dreads the thotght of not seeing their child grow up | :05:52. | :05:54.
and for one father from Barnsley this could be a reality. | :05:55. | :05:57.
Ian Pratt is dying from Motor Neurone disease. | :05:58. | :05:59.
He's begun recording videos of advice for his three year old | :06:00. | :06:02.
Ian was diagnosed in September 2012 and already life | :06:03. | :06:07.
He finds everyday jobs, more difficult to do. | :06:08. | :06:11.
Despite this, he says it is important to remain | :06:12. | :06:15.
positive and campaign for awareness and research into the disease. | :06:16. | :06:17.
For any parent time spent whth their child is precious. | :06:18. | :06:26.
But when time is in short supply it really has to count. | :06:27. | :06:29.
Ian Pratt is slowly dying from Motor Neuron Disease. | :06:30. | :06:32.
So his young daughter can one day remember him he has started | :06:33. | :06:35.
It was something I just wanted to do for George so she had | :06:36. | :06:41.
Just some of those conversations that a normal | :06:42. | :06:46.
What sorts of things have you chosen to include in those messages? | :06:47. | :06:51.
We had a talk about boys, about what she needs to do | :06:52. | :06:54.
I want her to be able to cole and talk to her mum if she dver | :06:55. | :07:00.
wants to and not feel that we are here to judge her, that we `re here | :07:01. | :07:04.
I guess if she ever wanted to one day she could put the play button | :07:05. | :07:11.
It's not the same but it's the best I can offdr. | :07:12. | :07:20.
Ian was only diagnosed in Sdptember 2012 and has been told his disease | :07:21. | :07:23.
is progressing slowly, but `lready he can't walk a great distance and | :07:24. | :07:26.
They claim it to be rare, there are about 5000 people in the UK with it. | :07:27. | :07:37.
I guess on a population bashs it is rare, but when you look at the | :07:38. | :07:41.
number of people who die evdry day, five people die from this dhsease | :07:42. | :07:46.
You are looking at one out of 275 people. | :07:47. | :07:50.
When I'm slurring I'm not drunk or when I fall I'm not drunk, it's | :07:51. | :07:57.
Yes they are making lots of inroads and yes they havd found | :07:58. | :08:03.
lots of things, but we are still no closer to having | :08:04. | :08:05.
a drug that slows it or stops it or even reverses the condition. | :08:06. | :08:14.
Ian knows that his reliance on others will gradually increase, | :08:15. | :08:18.
until the day even those closest to him can do no more. | :08:19. | :08:22.
While he can it's time to m`ke and leave memories. | :08:23. | :08:26.
It's not going anywhere so H've always been positive. | :08:27. | :08:28.
As I said, I need to make stre I've got two options, I can sit | :08:29. | :08:32.
in the corner and cry about it or I can do something positive about it. | :08:33. | :08:38.
Paying their final respects to a Normandy veteran from York. | :08:39. | :08:53.
Three weeks ago 93`year`old Roy Rowbotham paid | :08:54. | :08:56.
his respects to fallen soldhers at the D`Day landings beachds. | :08:57. | :08:59.
Today it was the turn of his family and veteran colleagues | :09:00. | :09:02.
In other news now, and four men have been given life | :09:03. | :09:10.
sentences for the murder of a Bradford man who was shot in the leg | :09:11. | :09:13.
and doused in acid in front of his wife at their home in East Bowling. | :09:14. | :09:19.
Barry Selby was attacked in his own bedroom in a feud | :09:20. | :09:24.
Lee Calvert was sentenced to at least thirty`six years. | :09:25. | :09:30.
Joseph Lowther and Robert Woodhead have minimum sentences of 32 years, | :09:31. | :09:33.
while getaway driver Andrew Feather must serve 26 years. | :09:34. | :09:38.
Some ambulance workers in Yorkshire have voted to go on strike over | :09:39. | :09:41.
Members of the Unite union, who make up about 10% | :09:42. | :09:45.
of the emergency workforce, will take part in the walkott. | :09:46. | :09:48.
It's part of a long`running dispute over shifts. | :09:49. | :09:52.
The ambulance service says ht's disappointed, | :09:53. | :09:53.
Meanwhile the NHS has urged people who fall | :09:54. | :09:58.
ill or get injured next weekend to call 111 for advice before heading | :09:59. | :10:04.
to hospital, as accident and emergency departments will be busy. | :10:05. | :10:08.
Support staff from a school for children with learning | :10:09. | :10:12.
difficulties have postponed further strike action after talks whth | :10:13. | :10:15.
the education authority which their union described as "positivd". | :10:16. | :10:19.
The GMB union says its membdrs are reporting up to ten incidents | :10:20. | :10:23.
of poor behaviour a day by students at Abbey School near Rotherham. | :10:24. | :10:27.
Staff held a demonstration outside the Rotherham counchl | :10:28. | :10:30.
A further day of strike action scheduled | :10:31. | :10:34.
for next week has been postponed while further talks take pl`ce. | :10:35. | :10:38.
Former Tesco delivery drivers from Doncaster, | :10:39. | :10:40.
who were made redundant in 2012 when the haulage firm Eddie Stob`rt took | :10:41. | :10:45.
over their employment, have been protesting outside Tesco's `nnual | :10:46. | :10:48.
184 drivers lost their jobs in September 2012. | :10:49. | :10:53.
Some of them travelled to London to take part in today's protest | :10:54. | :10:56.
They say they were unfairly dismissed. | :10:57. | :10:58.
Their case is being heard at an employment tribunal. | :10:59. | :11:03.
We've always been one of thd top performing depots, we have networked | :11:04. | :11:07.
out to Stobarts in Newark, we have done shift changes, time | :11:08. | :11:11.
changes, different shift periods, seven days, 364 days a year. | :11:12. | :11:18.
So I think that goes to show Stobarts how flexible we ard | :11:19. | :11:22.
and we will continue to demonstrate outsides stores and Tescos from now | :11:23. | :11:25.
Last night Look North won two awards at the o2 Media awards in Ldeds | :11:26. | :11:38.
Reporter Kate Bradbrook was named TV Broadcast Journalist of the Year | :11:39. | :11:41.
and the Tandem Tour won the award for Community Journalism | :11:42. | :11:44.
after raising one hundred and forty thousand pounds for Sport Rdlief. | :11:45. | :11:51.
We should have had the award in the studio! Only three weeks ago we | :11:52. | :12:12.
followed Roy Rowbotham as hd returned to France. He was there to | :12:13. | :12:16.
pay his respects to comrade 's who lost their lives in June 1944. Today | :12:17. | :12:21.
some of those same veterans paid their last respects to him. A | :12:22. | :12:30.
fitting tribute to an old soldier. A guard of honour for Roy Rowbotham at | :12:31. | :12:36.
his funeral today. Just thrde weeks ago, despite being in ill hdalth, he | :12:37. | :12:42.
took his place at the D`Day commemorations in northern France. | :12:43. | :12:51.
What else can you do? I lost some really good friends. We werd all | :12:52. | :12:59.
civilians soldiers, territorial soldiers, Saturday night soldiers, | :13:00. | :13:08.
they used to call us. Born hn 1 21, he served in the Royal artillery. | :13:09. | :13:16.
His part in the D`Day landings was a source of immense pride for his | :13:17. | :13:22.
family. I'm incredibly proud. It's not just him, it's everyone that has | :13:23. | :13:26.
fought for us over the years. The Normandy veterans here todax, | :13:27. | :13:31.
standing still a straight at 90 five years old. It's incredible. It makes | :13:32. | :13:38.
me so proud. Today friends `nd veterans turned out to celebrate the | :13:39. | :13:44.
life as a man who's also served in North Africa. Followed by c`mpaigns | :13:45. | :13:48.
in Japan and Northern Ireland. Returning to Normandy was an | :13:49. | :13:52.
opportunity not to be passed up They said to me, even if yot chop my | :13:53. | :13:57.
legs off I'm going to go. Hhs son said you are not going, he said I am | :13:58. | :14:05.
going. He definitely went. He made his mind up heat that he was going | :14:06. | :14:08.
to go, and he enjoyed himself while he was over there. Comrades | :14:09. | :14:19.
celebrated 70 years ago by bombs and bullets in France now reunited in | :14:20. | :14:20.
spirit. He gave his own special memorial by | :14:21. | :14:27.
going there. Tremendous sendoff today. | :14:28. | :14:31.
He's the former Premier League footballer turned professional | :14:32. | :14:34.
He's already proved his doubters wrong. | :14:35. | :14:35.
Now Sheffield's Curtis Woodhouse steps back into the ring | :14:36. | :14:37.
And with eight days to go bdfore the start of the Grand Depart, we are in | :14:38. | :14:51.
Paris to find out who the Khng of the look North sport team rdally is. | :14:52. | :14:58.
Nothing like a bit of healthy competition. | :14:59. | :15:02.
He's the former Premier League football player turned profdssional | :15:03. | :15:04.
Sheffield's Curtis Woodhousd proved his doubters wrong | :15:05. | :15:06.
when he was crowned British Champion in February. | :15:07. | :15:08.
But tonight he will put his title back on the line | :15:09. | :15:11.
as he steps into the ring whth Scotland's Willie Limond. | :15:12. | :15:13.
At the age of 34 there are not many sports men who can boast of success | :15:14. | :15:19.
But Curtis Woodhouse is an exception. | :15:20. | :15:24.
He is the current British lhght welterweight boxing champion, | :15:25. | :15:28.
but was also a top professional footballdr. | :15:29. | :15:31.
In 2001 he was sold by Sheffield United for ?1 million | :15:32. | :15:37.
I don't think there will be any professional footballers pl`ying | :15:38. | :15:40.
in the premiership, the championship, League 1, | :15:41. | :15:44.
League 2, representing their country at under 16, 18 and 21 levels, | :15:45. | :15:47.
I don't think anyone is going to go on to win the British title. | :15:48. | :15:51.
His main inspiration has bedn his late father, who passed awax before | :15:52. | :15:54.
he could achieve his dream of becoming a British boxing champion. | :15:55. | :15:58.
Finally I have achieved what I set out to achieve, which is fantastic. | :15:59. | :16:01.
Now I can go on and enjoy the rest of my career | :16:02. | :16:04.
This is about me enjoying it and seeing how far I can go. | :16:05. | :16:07.
Woodhouse is being trained for tonight's contest against | :16:08. | :16:09.
Scottish opponent Willie Lilond by good friend and former British | :16:10. | :16:12.
Me and Ryan are really good friends, but for the last 12 weeks I've | :16:13. | :16:18.
Defending his British title, fighting | :16:19. | :16:24.
for the Commonwealth title `gainst Willie Limond up in Glasgow in front | :16:25. | :16:31.
of about 9,000 screaming Scots, Curtis is going to thrive on that. | :16:32. | :16:37.
He loves that pressure and I think it will bring the best | :16:38. | :16:40.
Woodhouse and his team hope their gameplan will see him | :16:41. | :16:44.
Best of luck to him. Hull JR are up thanks to this neat bit of footwork. | :16:45. | :17:14.
Two tries from Patrick in the second half saw them pull away. | :17:15. | :17:18.
In the cricket the news is that there has been no cricket. Rain has | :17:19. | :17:25.
delayed the start of the eagerly anticipated match between Yorkshire | :17:26. | :17:32.
and Lancashire. Now, it's bden announced that the superstars of the | :17:33. | :17:36.
Tour de France will lie ridd through Leeds city centre tomorrow night as | :17:37. | :17:39.
they make their way to the official opening ceremony. All of thd riders | :17:40. | :17:47.
will ride from the University of Leeds to the start. The par`de will | :17:48. | :17:51.
give cycle fans the chance to see all of the riders two days before | :17:52. | :17:57.
the race begins for real. Staying with cycling, in just over ` week | :17:58. | :18:01.
the elite riders will be setting off on the opening stage of the Tour de | :18:02. | :18:06.
France. Tonight cyclists from West Yorkshire, including our own elite | :18:07. | :18:10.
riders, I getting into the lood by taking part in the Paris hill climb. | :18:11. | :18:17.
It involves climbing up a vdry steep hill, but the weather has not been | :18:18. | :18:19.
kind. However you got on? The weather like this was ndver in | :18:20. | :18:33.
Paris when I went there. Maxbe, this is a good way of getting thd elite | :18:34. | :18:37.
riders ready for what is gohng to hit them next week. This relinds me | :18:38. | :18:46.
of the famous joke about thd Japanese golfer, who said they loved | :18:47. | :18:52.
the course, why don't we hold it in summer? We will find out today who | :18:53. | :19:00.
is the king of Sprint in thd look North and cycling department. Let's | :19:01. | :19:06.
see how we got on. Paul, yot told me we were going to be racing hn Paris. | :19:07. | :19:14.
That's true, I did. But use a pair around here. I will we go, xou are | :19:15. | :19:26.
free. I'm Bradley Wiggins, xou are Chris Froome. Here we go. You could | :19:27. | :19:36.
have sorted out the weather. This is authentic Yorkshire weather. Let's | :19:37. | :19:45.
get the race faces on. I've had mine on all day. | :19:46. | :20:05.
With 200 metres to go is thd beginning to struggle? Look at those | :20:06. | :20:17.
thighs, surging away at this point. It's the yellow jersey form`t. `` | :20:18. | :20:30.
for Matthew. Can you see how difficult it is for me to h`ve to | :20:31. | :20:33.
talk to Matthew Slater after the caning he gave me. A begrudging | :20:34. | :20:40.
congratulations. That was a warm up, wasn't it? Let's go again. H was | :20:41. | :20:49.
dignified in defeat. Well done. How excited are you about next week | :20:50. | :20:57.
Unbelievably excited. I'm a bit sick of seeing him, let's get hil out the | :20:58. | :21:03.
way. This man has Uni cycled his way here. How was that? It was hard It | :21:04. | :21:10.
was enjoyable even in this weather. It's great to see so many pdople out | :21:11. | :21:18.
cycling. Even people on tandems and weird contraptions. It's bedn really | :21:19. | :21:25.
fun. Congratulations, you dhd it quicker on a unicycle than H did on | :21:26. | :21:30.
my proper bike. How successful has this been? It has been absolutely | :21:31. | :21:36.
fantastic, despite the weather. Thank you to everybody who helped | :21:37. | :21:41.
put this together. Congratulations, and well done to you and yotr club | :21:42. | :21:47.
mates for organising this even in this weather. It certainly set the | :21:48. | :21:49.
tone for next week. I'm glad Matt Slater won because he | :21:50. | :22:03.
is serious about his cycling. Let's keep on with bikes because we have | :22:04. | :22:07.
been talking about it. You can probably remember learning to write | :22:08. | :22:10.
up ride your first bike or perhaps teaching your child to learn. I | :22:11. | :22:16.
remember stabilisers. A new exhibition in Leeds taps into those | :22:17. | :22:17.
experiences. So what?s | :22:18. | :22:30.
your favourite cycling memory? These wonderful moments havd come | :22:31. | :22:33.
from the Yorkshire Film Archive and mine a rich seam | :22:34. | :22:37.
of nostalgic moments. It is territory that is also | :22:38. | :22:40.
explored at the Leeds City Luseum's Anyone from the city was asked to | :22:41. | :22:43.
send in photos from their cycling past and a selection | :22:44. | :22:51.
was made by photographer Casey Orr. So this was taken in the 1940s and | :22:52. | :22:56.
this is a Yorkshire cycling club. I feel a real responsibilitx to | :22:57. | :23:02.
the people of Leeds. You know, | :23:03. | :23:04.
through the old photographs, Casey also embarked on a series | :23:05. | :23:08.
of modern portraits The result is diverse | :23:09. | :23:16.
but also joyously unifying. The exhibition is enhanced | :23:17. | :23:26.
by a soundtrack and films. The bicycle is this wonderftlly | :23:27. | :23:37.
democratic, perfect machine. It's just this lovely cheap thing | :23:38. | :23:43.
that everyone can use and it has While the tour is about the cycling | :23:44. | :23:51.

Yorkshire as different commtnion tees `` communities experience the | :24:48. | :24:54.

us pictures of your street, your town and your village getting ready | :24:57. | :25:03.
for those bikes. It might h`ve a French theme, the more imaghnative | :25:04. | :25:11.
the better. My bike is great. Oh really? Yes, it's fantastic. I've | :25:12. | :25:17.
already had a few pictures sent in. I love this one. A yellow tdlephone | :25:18. | :25:33.
box. This one, a yellow jersey. I loved that. But as much as H loved | :25:34. | :25:39.
this one though. This one from Sheffield. We will be their live on | :25:40. | :25:46.
Monday with the programme. Please can continue to send in your photos | :25:47. | :25:51.
to this address. As we go through tomorrow, today has | :25:52. | :26:12.
been miserable, but tomorrow does look like it is going to brhghten | :26:13. | :26:21.
up. Things are on the improved. Most of us will see a dry and fine day. | :26:22. | :26:29.
Temperatures will recover a degree or two. The rain will sadly | :26:30. | :26:32.
continues for the cricket through this evening. The rain conthnuing | :26:33. | :26:36.
here, but as we had over ten night to night `` overnight tonight we | :26:37. | :26:46.
will hold onto the cloud and temperatures down to ten or 11 | :26:47. | :26:51.
degrees. Just a chilly start to the day. Tomorrow morning the stn will | :26:52. | :26:58.
rise at 4:38am. Those are the high water tides. Tomorrow morning, it is | :26:59. | :27:10.
going to be fairly cloudy start Some outbreaks of rain but sky | :27:11. | :27:15.
brightened up from the north. Some bright and sunny skulls devdloping, | :27:16. | :27:19.
the risk of a few showers ftlly West Yorkshire. There are likely to be a | :27:20. | :27:23.
few isolated showers, but inland good spells of sunshine and | :27:24. | :27:26.
temperatures rising to around 1 degrees. Like we said, keep those | :27:27. | :27:31.
pictures coming in. Let's hope the weather will be | :27:32. | :27:45.
better for next week. Have ` good weekend. | :27:46. | :27:51. |
